Was Moshe's Cloud Made of Smoke or Something Else?

Was Moshe's Cloud Made of Smoke or Something Else?

Part of Shemot · 37:03

A close Rashi reading on the cloud Moshe entered to receive the Torah, why the Torah repeats his entry into it, and how smoke density mirrors the coarseness of what's burned.

Parking anecdote and arrival delay

What would you say? You also waited for me. So you didn't say the same thing that he said to us? No, I I called up. They told me it was okay to park in this said to the guy that they're just finishing services. So he said okay, let them come. When you came in you said, \"You made a delivery.\" Could be both true. Delivery for Hashem. Yeah, that's it. Okay. Okay, I'll stop for you now. Just

Reading Mishpatim and the start of Matan Torah

wait for that. Let's just look at the Chumash. The last part from before we started. Okay, look at look at the end of the parashah. It says end of Parashat Mishpatim actually talks about Matan Torah. So the last parashah piece, it says there, Hashem said to Moshe, \"Come up to the mountain, and be there and I'll give you the לוחות.\" Moshe and Yehoshua came and the זקנים, he said stay here. Then, it says, ויעל משה אל ההר. Look, pasuk, start from pasuk ט\"ו. ויעל משה אל ההר, משה went up to the mountain, ויכס הענן את ההר, and the ענן, the cloud covered the mountain. Then it says, וישכן כבוד השם על הר סיני, and the honor of Hashem rested on הר סיני. ויכסהו הענן, and the ענן covered it, ששת ימים, for six days. ויקרא אל משה, and he called to Moshe, ביום השביעי, on the seventh day he called him מתוך הענן, השם called Moshe in from through the cloud. Then it says, ומראה כבוד השם כאש אוכלת בראש ההר, the כבוד of Hashem looked like fire, eating, consuming, on top of the mountain. לעיני כל עיני בני ישראל, the Yidden saw it. Then it says, ויבא משה בתוך הענן, משה went into the cloud, ויעל אל ההר, and went up to the mountain. ויהי משה בהר ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה, משה was there for 40 days and 40 nights. Okay, so let's learn the sichah now. בסיום הסדרה, at the end of the סדרה, on the last words of this, the the end of the last by the end by the last pasuk, where it says Moshe came into בתוך הענן, into the cloud, zogt Rashi, now you can see what Rashi says,

Distinguishing cloud and smoke in Rashi

ענן זה כמין עשן הוא, this cloud was like smoke. וכולי, and then he says more, but the רבי doesn't bring the end of the Rashi yet. We could look at the Rashi. Rashi says the second half of Rashi is, ועשה לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה שביל בתוכו, and Hashem made for Moshe a path in the middle of this cloud, middle of the smoke. It was left over from Matan Torah? This is from Matan Torah, we'll see. ענן, the word ענן means a cloud. Smoke and a cloud, that's two different things. ענן ווערט געשאפן פון מים, a cloud comes from water, און עשן, and smoke comes from Eish, from fire. היינט, therefore the kashya is like number one, וואו נעמט רש\"י טייטשן ענן אנדערש ווי איבעראל? What makes Rashi change that here the cloud means smoke? און צווייטנס, פשוט איז דאך בכלל שווער אין פשוטו של מקרא וואס רש\"י דארף דאס צו פארענטפערן. What does Rashi want? Rashi only explains a pasuk if it's something not clear. What's not clear? It says very clearly, Moshe went into the cloud, finish. Why does Rashi even look for any pshat? Okay, that's the first part of Rashi. Hashem made for Moshe a path. דער מקור פון דעם ענין איז אין גמרא, the source of such a thing is in Gemara. אבער דארט קומט עס אלס א תירץ אויף דער סתירה צווישן צוויי פסוקים. In

Gemara's contradiction and the path in the cloud

Gemara, it comes as an answer to a contradiction between two pesukim. The Gemara says like this, כתיב, it says one pasuk, not here, some place else it says, פרשת פקודי, ולא יכול משה לבוא אל אהל מועד כי שכן עליו הענן, Moshe couldn't enter the אהל מועד because the cloud was there. So, obviously Moshe could not go into the cloud. כתיב, another pasuk says, and that's this פסוק, ויבא משה בתוך הענן, Moshe came into the cloud, so he could go into the cloud. So so the בית דבי רבי ישמעאל תנא, in the ישיבה דבי רבי ישמעאל they answered like this, נאמר כאן בתוך ונאמר להלן בתוך, and it says here he went בתוך, we learned out the word בתוך from a different place. By קריעת ים סוף it says, ויבואו בני ישראל בתוך הים, same word, they went, what does what happened there? מעלה ההוא שביל, just like there Hashem made a path, דכתיב, it says, והמים להם חומה, the water was like a like a wall on both sides, so like a path, אף כאן שביל, also here a path. So the reason the Gemara brings this idea that Moshe had a path, pashut because there's a contradiction to another pasuk. So, we have to answer into the couldn't go, but when you make a path he could, that's why he could, that's the peshat. אבער אין פירוש Rashi דאך קען מען נישט לערנען אז ער איז אויסן צו פארענטפערן די סתירה, you can't learn that Rashi says this because this will answer the contradiction. Why? ווייל די סתירה ווערט ערשט שפעטער, this contradiction only comes up later in פסוק ולא יכול משה, the other pasuk where it says that Moshe couldn't come in, דאס איז Parashat Pekudei. When does Rashi answer a contradiction between pesukim? When the first pasuk comes, there's no contradiction yet. When you come to the second pasuk and that contradicts the previous, so Rashi answers it later. So Rashi here is not interested in answering a contradiction later. Moshe, he can't get in in the ענן, so we have to say that this that Rashi has to tell us how was Moshe possible to go into the cloud and Rashi has to answer it by עשה לו הקדוש ברוך הוא, עשה לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה שביל, He made him a path, is It's not because there's a later pasuk which says Moshe couldn't come into the Obviously here this pasuk itself has a problem, how did Moshe come into the ענן? We have to answer that he was able, he went through, with the, Hashem made a path. But that's the problem, it's תמוה, to say that it's hard to understand how Moshe went into the ענן is not, not understood, why not? Right here before we said Moshe entered the ערפל, yeah. So this is not, is the end of Yitro. Moshe went into the ערפל. What's ערפל? ערפל is an area within three areas, there are three areas: חושך, ענן, וערפל. There is darkness, and then there is worse than that, a cloud, and then there is worse than that, ערפל, which is a very thick cloud. דאס הייסט אז משה איז דורכגעגאנגען נישט בלויז דעם חושך וענן, משה passed, Rashi says there, not only the darkness, not only the cloud, נאר אויך דורך הערפל, he also went through the ערפל, וואס איז, רש״י טייטשט, עב הענן, ערפל is the thickness of the cloud. Rashi vi azoy, there's a, the pages are mixed up in this sicha, it's upside down, okay whatever. But Rashi doesn't say how ווי אזוי ער האט דארט געקענט דורכגיין, how was he, Rashi doesn't answer. Is a puleh muchach, Rashi should, if anything he should have, if Rashi feels that al pi peshat he can't go through a cloud, so how did he go through there? So he should have answered that he made a path, should have said it over there. A puleh muchach, since Rashi doesn't say it there, I assume that in peshat it's not a question how you could go through a cloud. You can go through a cloud. You could go through a cloud, אפילו אז ס'איז נישטא קיין שביל, even if you don't have a path. So therefore over there he didn't tell us, so why is it important here? Mimela, if you say it's a contradiction, you can see it, there it says he couldn't, but here Rashi doesn't answer the contradiction, just explaining why how he went through the ענן. What's the problem? Why do you need to tell me that he went through a path? So the Rebbe says that the answer is like this: די קשיא באשטייט נישט אין פשוטו של מקרא, one of the things that the Rebbe asks, what is the problem of this פסוק, that Rashi has to say anything? The problem is like this. באלד דער פסוק זאגט פריער ויכס הענן את ההר, that's why I said look at the Chumash. The פסוק says before, ויעל, the פסוק says before, ויעל משה אל ההר, משה went up to the mountain, ויכס הענן את ההר, and the cloud covered the mountain. So it says there like that. אז דער הר איז געווען באדעקט מיט'ן ענן, the mountain was covered with the cloud, איז דאך מובן מאליו, so we understand, אז ווען ויעל משה אל ההר, so when the pasuk says here Moshe went up to the mountain, איז ער אריין אין ענן, he went into the ענן, for sure he went into the cloud. So then וואס דארף נאכדעם זיין מפורש זיין ויבא משה בתוך הענן, why does the Torah have to say that Moshe went into the cloud, that's how he went up? Obviously if it tells you he went up to the mountain and we know from the pasuk before that there was a cloud there, so it's obvious, why does the pasuk have to repeat he went into the cloud? Okay, so let's skip the, like I said, the brackets, that gets complicated, different שיטות, so we'll not, so let's go to the next column. איז דאך פון דעם משמע, so that we understand, אז בתוך הענן מיינט דער פסוק זאגן, that when the Torah adds that he went into the cloud, the Torah adds אז דער ענן באשטייט דא, איז נישט דער זעלבער ענן וואס ווערט דערמאנט אין די פריערדיקע פסוקים. It must be a different cloud. The previous cloud that the pasuk says that it was a cloud, that for sure he went through, the Torah is trying to tell you there's another cloud he went, not the same one as we had before. We'll see. ווערט דאך די שאלה, so the question is, וואס איז געווען אט דער ענן? So what is this, it's a new cloud? It says the Torah, Torah says that a cloud covered it, but now it says he went through another cloud, that's what it seems like. זאגט Rashi יא, it's a different cloud, ענן זה, this one, פון דעם קומט ארויס עשן, or that's smoke. What is the פשט? And he explains, דעם ענן וואס ווערט דערמאנט אין די פריערדיקע פסוקים און פרשיות, the clouds that the pasuk before speaks about that there was a cloud on top of the mountain or the previous פרשה יתרו it says, דאס Rashi נישט מפרש זיין. Rashi doesn't have to explain what's a cloud. Everyone knows what a cloud is. It's totally clear. ס'איז געווען אן ענן כפשוטו, there was a simple cloud in which is געווען אנגעטאן כבוד Hashem. Hashem's glory was put into a cloud. Or we see געווען דער עמוד הענן, we know constantly there was this pillar of cloud that guided them their way, אז השם הלך לפניהם יומם בעמוד ענן, Hashem guided them, how did he guide them? Through the cloud. ולילה בעמוד אש להאיר להם, at night it was the fire. So we know a cloud is a cloud, ענן כפשוטו, there's no problem. So the previous times it's mentioned it was a cloud, fine, simple. מה שאין כן דער ענן שוואס דער פסוק זאגט, וואס מיר מוזן זאגן אז דאס איז געווען אן אנדער מין ענן, now the cloud that it says here Moshe went into the cloud, and we said before it can't be the same cloud because the pasuk wouldn't repeat it, it must be a different cloud, דארף Rashi מפרש זיין אז ענן זה כמין עשן. So this is a different type of cloud. This cloud is smoke. Why would he say smoke? Where did the smoke come from? What forced Rashi to say that this cloud was smoke? From the pesukim. What's the pesukim? So let's look at the pesukim again. The pasuk says here like this. The kavod of Hashem was on Har Sinai, the ענן covered it ששת ימים, six days. So Hashem called Moshe on the seventh day through the ענן. Then the pasuk says: ומראה כבוד ה׳ כאש אוכלת, Hashem's kavod looked like fire eating on top of the mountain. Then it says Moshe came into the cloud and went up to the Har. So he says like this: צווישן ויקרא אל משה, between the pasuk where it says Hashem called Moshe, און ויבא משה, the fact that Moshe came, Hashem called him so he came. In the pasuk middle there's a new pasuk which doesn't belong there. It should have said, Hashem called Moshe, and what's right next after that? Moshe came in. In middle it says a פסוק ומראה כבוד ה׳ כאש אוכלת בראש ההר, that Hashem's kavod what was on the, looked like, was like a fire eating. It's נישט פארשטאנדיק, we don't understand. This pasuk that there was a fire on the mountain should have been written before the pasuk said Hashem called Moshe. It says the kavod of Hashem was on the mountain. So he's describing what happened to the mountain, he should have continued with the description that there was a fire on the mountain, then he should say Hashem called him and he came. אפטייטשן, he should have explained at the ומראה כבוד ה׳ איז געווען כאש אוכלת. When he says Hashem was on the mountain, he should have right away said, and it looked like a fire. פאר וואס שטייט ערשט נאָך ויקרא אל משה ביום השביעי מתוך הענן, why after it says he called, Hashem called Moshe, before it says Moshe came, in middle he puts in the pasuk that the kavod of Hashem looked like a fire that was eating? So let's skip the brackets again because it's all connected to the previous bracket. That's what he's going to say. So the brackets finish page 278 and there's third column third that's it. דער רבי לערנט רש״י, so Rashi says, אז דער פסוק ומראה, this pasuk where it says the sight of the kavod of Hashem was like a fire, is a הקדמה צו פסוק ויבא משה בתוך הענן. That's an introduction to the pasuk that Moshe Rabbeinu came into the cloud. By saying that, we just said that Rashi says the pasuk

Why the Torah repeats Moshe entering a cloud

tells us that this cloud was a different cloud than before. What's the difference, how is it different? That's why right before it says Moshe went into the cloud, the pasuk says there was a fire there. So this is introduction. But the fire that the פסוק מפרש ויבא משה בתוך הענן, first he gives an introduction, then we'll understand why the Torah then continues that he went into the cloud, because this is a different cloud. This is a cloud that came from the fire. This is a different cloud, it's not the same cloud that came on the mountain. Also because there was another thing, there was a fire there, and fire makes a cloud, makes the smoke I mean. Er is כמין עשן, this is a cloud like smoke, וואס איז געקומען פון דעם אש אוכלת וואס שטייט פריער אין פסוק, which came from the fire that was eating, that was consuming. That's why the, Hashem called him and then right after that the Torah wants to tell you that he came in, but he went through the cloud, a special cloud, so right before it says he came through the cloud, pasuk says that there was a fire here, and through that cloud he came. This is fire, Rashi says must be smoke. Damit wird אויך מובן דער דיוק הפסוק אש אוכלת, this why it's important to to write it was like a fire that was consuming. לכאורה נישט פארשטאנדיק, we don't understand, צו מתאר זיין די מראה פון כבוד ה׳, to describe the kavod, what the kavod of Hashem looked like, is לכאורה גענוג צו זאגן אז עס איז געווען ווי פייער. All important just say, it looked like fire, so it should have said Hashem looked like fire. Why does it have to say it's a fire that consumed? What's the difference? We're trying to describe Hashem's look, so to speak. What's it? Why it didn't consume the bush? There's smoke there. But back it didn't, but here it did consume. Now we're understanding what pshat is, now we understand why. היות אז די כוונה אין דעם פסוק דא, since the reason why the פסוק בכלל is written here, is צו מרמז זיין א פירוש פון דעם פסוק שלאחריו ויבא משה בתוך הענן, is to explain the next pasuk, what does it mean that he went into the cloud? The pasuk tells us before that there was a fire, and therefore, from that we understand that the cloud in the next pasuk was smoke. אז דער ענן איז געווען אן עשן וואס האט זיך געשאפן פון דעם וואס מראה כבוד ה' איז געווען כאש, אז דער ענן, the cloud was not really a cloud, it was smoke. So it has to say it was fire that consumed, פאר אן עשן ווערט נישט פון אן אש אליין, fire doesn't make smoke, נאר פון אן אש וואס איז אוכלת, מכלה, פארברענט די זאכן וואס עס איז נאחז. How does the smoke come? Because it's burning something up. If it would be a fire without consuming, there would be no smoke, and the, the whole purpose of the pasuk, the Rebbe explains, is to tell us there was smoke. You don't have fire that is consuming. No, this is a ruchniyut fire, we would have thought it wouldn't consume, could be it was a רוחניות'דיקע fire that was just there as a fire. Like the סנה. Yeah, there it was fire on the bush, but the bush didn't burn. Or the fire that they... And he says, the Rebbe says, יש להוסיף, the Rebbe adds, בכלל איז דער אש שלמעלה נישט קיין אש אוכלת, בכלל it says a fire that comes מן השמים, from heaven, doesn't burn up, doesn't consume, ווי מיר האבן פריער גערעדט ביים סנה, it says by the bush, וירא בלבת אש מתוך הסנה והנה הסנה איננו אוכל, because it didn't burn. דערפאר דארף דער פסוק מודיע זיין, that's another reason he says, the pasuk has to add אז דא איז יא געווען אן אש אוכלת, here this was a fire, וואס פאר דאס איז דערפון געשאפן אן ענן שכולו עשן. On the mizbeach, a fire came from heaven. Yeah, that's special. That's special to consume the korbanot. Yeah, but here, it's a fire that the Aibershter made as a description, as a as a as an expression of Himself, doesn't burn. But here the pasuk, it had to burn, because if it wouldn't burn, there wouldn't be smoke, and the Torah is trying to tell you that there was a smoke there, and after that the next pasuk he went into the smoke. Okay, so we understand the first part of Rashi, why Rashi says and where he gets this point, very שמאק... Oh, that's what he's going to say now the second half. אויב אזוי, אבער נאך דעם וואס ס'איז פארענטפערט, איז דאך נישט פארשטאנדיק פאר וואס רש״י דארף פארענטפערן, and now we have to explain why Rashi has to add ועשה לו הקב״ה למשה שביל בתוכו, that the Aibershter made for him a path, דאס איז אין אונזער פסוק, בהמשך צו זיין פירוש ענן זה כמין עשן הוא. Earlier when it says Moshe went in the cloud, Rashi doesn't say he made a path, and the reason is because you don't need a path, you could go through the cloud. Here, and in the same Rashi with the same thing, first he says it was smoke and then he says a path, why? You don't have to tell you how he came into the cloud. ואדרבה, ווי געלערנט פריער איז משה ניגש אפילו אל הערפל, and we said before Moshe entered in the depth, in the deep cloud, no problem. דאס וואס Rashi זאגט ענן זה כמין עשן הוא, since we said this is a smoke, וואס רויך האט זיך בטבע אז מיט דעם פיח אין אים, פון דעם דאזיקן... ס'פאררייכערן... smoke has a טבע of making you black, שווארץ מאכן דעם וואס געפינט זיך אין אים און זיינע לבושים. You get black, your face gets black and your clothes. Oh, smoking, what did they teach you, not to, not to smoke. ועל דרך זה, so now after Rashi says that he went into this cloud which was smoke, דא קומט אויף, איי, ס'איז דאך נישט שיין אזוי זאל געשען ביי Moshe Rabbeinu? This is how Moshe, Moshe had to get all black and everything? This is

Moshe's appearance after entering the smoky cloud

how he looked like when he went up the mountain to Hashem, איידער ער באקומט די לוחות, to get the Luchot? Can you imagine, he was standing by Hashem, all black and dirty? דערפאר איז Rashi ממשיך, Rashi continues, ועשה לו הקב״ה שביל בתוכו, השם made a path, און Moshe איז געגאנגען אין דעם שביל, he went through the path, ממילא האט דער רויך אים נישט בארירט, it didn't affect him, he didn't get black. לכאורה דער Rashi איז perfect, both sides. No, not enough. Rashi says like an עשן, like a cloud, like a smoke, Rashi should've said ענן זה עשן הוא! לכאורה, as we said before, it came from the fire and it burned, and it was a real smoke. So why טאקע, if it was smoke, the פסוק should have said smoke, why does the פסוק say cloud and we have to figure out that it meant smoke? הפסוק should have said he came into the smoke. והביאור, the answer is like this: דער הר סיני אין מדבר סיני, די פראגע דארף מען פרעגן, this Har Sinai which was in the מדבר, was in the desert, and the top of the mountain, וואו עס איז געווען דער מראה כבוד ה' כאש אוכלת, the top of the mountain where the fire was, איז דאך נישט קיין ארט וואס וואקסט אילנות, שטרוי, עשבים. Things don't grow there, trees don't grow there, grass doesn't grow there. Smoke comes if it burns up something that's getting consumed. Like wood and... אילנות, like trees, ah? Why did Hashem put the סנה there? Because nothing grows. Yeah, that's what we went into, yeah. בטבע, ביי דומם, you can't consume דומם, which is stones, אבנים, עפר, or sand. And he brings up

Unnatural Smoke: ‘Like Smoke’

It's like smoke, which means It's burning the the stones, normally doesn't get smoke, but since it did burn something there, it came out smoke in a not natural way. This looked like a smoke that came from something that was consumed, even though really really didn't consume it, it consumed it, but not in a natural way. Mai ta'ama? It was not a natural smoke. You need a עשן. Huh? So you don't need... No, but it was עשן. It was an עשן. Like... No, it was it was a real עשן. It was a real smoke, and made you black, but he calls it an ענן because it wasn't natural. But it was from the rock, but it didn't really consume it. It didn't really consume it, it was like it consumed. This is the פשט in Rashi. ביי Yina shel Torah in פירוש Rashi, how does this fit in חסידות of Rashi? The fact that there was smoke on Har Sinai, it says clearly. Here, the פסוק doesn't say clearly. Rashi just explains. There's a פסוק that says והר סיני עשן כולו. Har Sinai was full of smoke, מפני אשר ירד עליו ה׳ באש, cuz ה׳ came down with fire. Here, it says also smoke, but it doesn't use the word smoke. It doesn't say עשן, it says ענן. Why? The explanation of the Rebbe, the explanation is like this: א עשן פשוט נעמט זיך פון א דבר הנשרף. We said before smoke comes from פשטות from something that's consumed, that's burnt. Why does it come? מצד דעם וואס דער דבר הנשרף איז א חומר גשמי, since what you're burning is a tangible object, און דער אש איז מכלה דעם גשם, in the גשם, and the fire consumes the the matter, איז א כליון, that burning גורם causes, זיינע תוצאות זענען עשן, causes a smoke. So the smoke comes because of the object being burned, being consumed. That's why

Smoke Density Mirrors Material Coarseness

there are all kinds of smokes. There's thicker smoke, and not so thick, it depends on what is burning. אויב דער דבר הנשרף איז א חומר דק, if what you're burning is a more refined matter, ווערט ער פארברענט שנעלער, so it burns faster, און דאן איז אויך דער עשן עדלער און שיטערער, then the smoke is also more refined and much less thick, thin. שיטער, שיטער means thin, thin, yeah, but not what thin is, is דין. Fine? שיטער is no, the opposite of being very condensed, very, is scattered is... Opposite of dense is what? Whatever it is. Several? Scattered, yeah. But when the דבר הנשרף איז א חומר עב וגס, if it's גראב, it's a very thick, thick matter, איז דאן דער עשן געדיכטער און גראבער, thicker and... Denser. And גראבער. Coarser. Coarser. When you see smoke, smoke describes how, what level the thing that you burnt is, how thick it is or is it a thick thing, is it a refined thing. דאס קומט לידי גילוי בשעת מען פארברענט דאס זאך, when the thing is burned, that's when you could tell what kind of thing it was. אזוי ווי דאס איז בגשמיות, just like physically like that, אזוי איז דאס אויך ברוחניות. Ruchniyus the same way. אין דעם ביטול וכליון פון דברים דלתתא לאלקות, when something down here gets consumed to Hashem, gets batel to Hashem, there's a difference: דורך דעם גילוי אש שלמעלה ווערט נאכל ונכלה די ישות פון וועלט, when there's a גילוי, a revelation of from above, what it does is it consumes the coarseness of this world. און עס ווערט אין איר אויפגעטאן דער ביטול וכליון לאלקות, it gets consumed and becomes batel to Elokus. Just like fire burns it up, makes it shouldn't be a יש, it shouldn't be a מציאות, so b'ruchniyus they have it. און דאס איז ברוחניות דער ענין פון עשן, so b'ruchniyus that concept of smoke, וואס ווייזט אויפן כליון פון די ישות און ביטול פון וועלט. When there's something that you cause in the world, the world to become batel, so the level of how much bitul is done, or what kind of thing is becomes batel, that's the level of the רוחניות'דיקע smoke. ...if it's denser... It depends on how coarse... Yes, it's the same. So how you see it b'ruchniyus. B'ruchniyus, here's the רוחניות'דיקע smoke. You've got to be a meivin. און דאס איז דער חילוק צווישן די צוויי פסוקים, and that now we understand the difference between the two pesukim. ...right? We said that before, the Pasuk in Parashat Yitro says clearly there was smoke. The Pasuk here says there was a cloud, which means smoke. So that's the difference. That Pasuk earlier spoke of the time of Matan Torah. און אזוי ווי דער גילוי אלקות במתן תורה איז געווען בדרך מלמעלה למטה, אלקות that came at מתן תורה came from above, איז דער פסוק איז ממשיך, the פסוק says why... Why was there smoke? דער גילוי איז געקומען מצד למעלה, it happened because of Hashem. The world itself was not purified yet. Hashem came down through the smoke to purify it. The smoke was the purification of the world. So what did he purify? A very coarse thing, a world which is very גראב. That's why when the Torah describes what Hashem came down on Har Sinai and it was מברר him and was מבטל him, there was a real עשן there, because what was it מבטל? The גראבקייט פון דער וועלט, the world was very גראב. The fact there's a lot of smoke shows אז די חומריות פון דער וועלט איז נישט געווען זך, because it wasn't refined. א שייכות צו פרשת שמיני, in our פרשה ווו עס רעדט זיך וועגן דעם זמן פון נאך מתן תורה, our פסוק is talking after the Torah was given, then this there was a a fire on it, smoke. נאך דעם ביטול די זאך וואס די מתן תורה האט געפועלט אין דער וועלט, after מתן תורה had caused this refinement in the world, איז שוין דאן די מציאות פון דער וועלט נישט אזוי פיל גראב, so the world is not so גראב, not so coarse. And now, already since it wasn't causing a refinement in like a real גראב, so now it's not עשן ממש, נאר בלויז א כוסה לכן נקרא בתורה נישט בשם עשן כי אם בשם ענן, because it was more refined it was called ענן. The ענן doesn't show how much it went up. The ענן is something that's refined, so it was already refined before we started. So this is peshat in the reason why the two pesukim are different. אויף דעם איז רש\"י ביינה של תורה מגלה, so Rashi now comes in and adds something else, אז ענן זה כמין עשן הוא. Even though it says ענן, so Rashi says this ענן is like smoke. היות אז ענינו איז נישט דער גילוי אלקות מלמעלה, ווי דער ענן וואס ווערט געמאלדן אין די פסוקים פריער, since this cloud, this smoke is not like before where it came from above, נאר דאס קומט פון דער מראה כבוד השם כאש אכלת, בבחינת ביטול במציאות העולם, since after all it's causing the bitul in the world, איז כמין עשן הוא, so it is like smoke. Why? אייכנט דאן איז דא אן ענין פון עשן. Even when it was now after מתן תורה, there was some kind of concept of smoke. עפרא דלית, עפרא דנורא וואס קומט פון דעם כליון החומר. But smoke, smoke is soot, black, that comes from the destruction of the the the bitul of the welt. פון וויבאלד אז די כוונה פון די נתינת התורה איז כדי צו מאכן פון דער וועלט א דירה לו יתברך בתחתונים, since the whole purpose of the Torah is to make a dwelling place for Hashem in this low world, איז על פאר ענן זה, so on this cloud, דער ענן אין וועלכן משה האט געדארפט אריינגיין צו מקבל זיין די לוחות התורה צו אראפברענגען עס למטה, where Moshe went through the ענן to bring down the Torah down here, and the whole purpose of bringing the Torah down here is to be mevarer to purify the גשמיות, איז כמין עשן הוא, so this is also like an עשן. עס איז א גילוי מלמעלה וואס פועלט כליון און ביטול החומר פון די נבראים. It's coming from למעלה, but it causes that there should be an עשן, should be a smoke because it does cause the bitul of the welt. ס'איז נאר וואס איינציק נאך דעם גילוי פון מתן תורה, but since it was after מתן תורה, וואס ס'איז געטאן א זאך אז דער ביטול כללות חומר העולם, that the world generally already became refined, דעפאר איז נישט געווען עשן כולו, ווי בשעת דאס כללות גילוי פון מתן תורה, it wasn't a complete smoke, like I said before which was the world was completely גראב, דאס בלייבט כמין עשן, it was like עשן. אבער אן עשן מוז זיין, it has to be this concept of an עשן, of smoke, because the whole idea is to be mevarer the welt and when you mevarer a welt, it spits smoke, רוחניותדיקע smoke. But when Moshe went up the first time there was the thickest that was the real smoke? No, no, that when he went, he didn't go into the smoke, he went into the ענן. But the whole place was covered with with smoke, no? No, it's white smoke, but it's a place where there's smoke. He went into the ענן doesn't say he went into the אש. He went into the ענן, and the ענן was, the אש was separate. He didn't go into the אש. Originally it was it was covered altogether with with smoke, no? Yeah, but that obviously Moshe did not go to that, so it says ויבא משה בתוך הענן. It says, so obviously he didn't go there, he didn't. That smoke was the the refinement The birur of the welt, the birur of a גראבע welt. Right. And now we have to be mevarer a welt which already is a certain degree refined because of מתן תורה. So how come השכינה came on the הר סיני at this particular point, it flew off, nothing remained from it. No more, who's that Yeah. Because בכללות it is from למעלה למטה. burned up completely Yeah, but that's that's the לגבי the welt. We're not talking about the mountain itself, that is a representation of the גאנצע welt. So, being here represents the גאנצע welt became more more purified, yeah, but still not enough! Still not enough, it still was so many דרגות and then you made the משכן and then you made the בית המקדש, it's a whole thing, and we're still not finished. The הוראה from all of this, the הוראה of all this in our עבודה, is on a פרט אזעלכע וואס טענה'ן: וואס פארא ענין האב איך מיט דברים התחתונים? Some people claim, what do we have to do with low things? אויב שוין יא, דארף עס, plus, if I'm gonna lower myself, איז גענוג די ירידה אין אזעלכע ענינים, וואס זאל איך זיין אין א בחינה פון חי, אדער אפילו נידעריקער צו צומח. Lower yourself not so low! Like, just like in world we have דומם, צומח, חי, מדבר, you blow it to חי, animal life, plant life. אבער נישט האבן צו טון גלייך מיט די זאכן אין וועלט וואס זיינען אין א סוג פון דומם. But דומם, a מציאות חומריות ביותר, very low, coarse מציאות, אין וועלכעס זעט זיך נישט קיין שום חיות, you see no life. ווידער, אפילו ווען ס'איז מאיר אש הוי'ה, even when the fire of Hashem is there, איז דאך פאראן נישט קיין כלי צו דעם. A דומם is no כלי, און ס'איז אים נישט נאחז דער אש. The fire of Hashem can't grab onto him. עס דארף זיין פריער דער ענין פון וואס, ברעכן עס? Have to break it down, I mean you have something very iron, if you break it up, it'll grow it'll fire, but normally these things can't even a דומם can't have fire. So a guy says, why should I lower myself, it means in רוחניות, why should I go to the lowest level? זאגט מען זיי, we tell him, א מען מוז פועל'ן עשן והעלאה אויך אין די נידעריקע סוג פון דומם אין דער וועלט. We have to bring smoke, which means we have to elevate even the lowest part of the world, ווארום דאמיט איז פארבונדן דער תכלית פון מתן תורה. That's the whole goal of מתן תורה. אז דער ענין העשן, דער כליון ועלי' פון חומר העולם, זאל אויפגעטאן ווערן נישט נאר אין דעם צומח, נייערט אין בארג, אין דומם. The whole purpose is to elevate the lowest parts of the world, that's why to elevate the mountain, which is made of stones. קען עס, יא, מ'קומט מיט נאך א טענה. So then you come with another טענה. ער זאגט, אבער כמבואר לשם וגם כן, it says in Tanya, that if a person fights with a dirty person, you might win the fight, but you get dirty. So the רבי says, פועל זיין אן עשן אין דברים התחתונים, if you tell me that I should get involved in the low things to cause an עלי', וועט דאך גיין און זאל זיך איינריכטן? איינריכטן means to get dirty. איז דאך גלייכער אז מען זאל זיך נישט פארנעמען מיט זיי? So better don't get don't start up with them. דער ענטפער, the answer is, the answer answer is: number one, עשה לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה שביל בתוכו. Hashem made a path for Moshe. די בחינה פון משה, which is though in the neshama of every Yid, every Yid has a little bit of Moshe in him. So that level, זי וועט זיך וועט זיך נישט איינריכטן. That won't get dirty. זי וועט בלייבן ריין, it'll always stay clean. וואס זי גייט דורך דער שביל, זי איז על ידי מחיצת השביל, because there is a certain path, and the path means there's like a protection. The neshama has a protection, and the neshama is always connected to Hashem, the neshama don't worry. That's number one. נאך מער, further, בפנימיות הענינים, if you go deeper, ווערן אויך די כחות הגלוים נישט פארשמיצט פון דער עשן. Even not only the עצם הנשמה, the essence of the neshama, even the out- the other outward levels of the neshama also don't get dirty from the smoke, ווייל באמת איז גארנישט קיין עשן, cause in truth it's not really smoke. ס'איז בלויז כעין עשן, it's like smoke. ס'איז אן ענן וואס זעט זיך, זעט נאר אויס ווי עשן, it's a cloud that looks like a smoke. זאת אומרת, what does that mean? דאס וואס די וועלט איז מעלים ומסתיר על אלקות, this is the world covers up on Godliness, איז דאס נאר כעין פונעם מציאות, כדי צו געבן צו לעבן, צו געבן דעם ענין פון בחירה. It's only not a real thing. Hashem made it that it should look like there's a problem in order for us to have free choice. אויב מיר וואלטן געזען דעם אמת, had we seen the truth, וואלט דאך נישט געווען קיין ארט צו בחירה, there wouldn't be choice. So Hashem made we shouldn't see the truth and we should think that there's some opposition to Elokus. נאך מער, oh even further, כיוון דא דער העלם קומט לתכלית פון קדושה, since that's a pretty good shot, since the whole helem, the whole concealment is because of a purpose of kedushah in order for us to overcome it, איז דאס באמת גאר אן ענן, אן ענן. This darkness, this smoke is really a cloud, which is kedushah. Why? If it's for the purpose of kedushah, anything so so down the line, it's that's what its metziut is. Smokescreen. ער קומט טאקע אויס, עס קוקט טאקע אויס ווי עשן, it looks like smoke, דער דבר חומרי, looks like a coarse thing. ס'אפילו נאך זיין נאך זיין כליון ועלי' בלייבט איבער א רושם. Smoke means that even after you burn something, there is still left some some blackness, some things like that. אבער דאס איז בלויז וואס נראה לעיני בשר, it looks like that. בפנימיות איז אן ענן של קדושה. Really, this is a cloud of קדושה, און דער גאנצער תכלית זיין איז כדי צוצוקומען צו קדושה. Why is it the darkness? Why is there smoke? Why is there coarseness of the world? To come to a higher level of kedushah. און דאס איז די הוראה. In English, it's a smokescreen. What does a smokescreen mean? Looks like it's something, but it's smoke, right? Yeah, cover it up. Cover? Yeah, covered. Yeah, right. Okay. און דאס איז די הוראה. This is the lesson: א מען מוז אריינגיין און דורכגיין דעם עשן. We have to get into and pass this cloud, the smoke. דורך דעם איז מען מקבל די תורה. That's how you get the Torah. משה רבינו, וכל אחד ואחד בבחינת משה שבנפשו, משה רבינו himself, and everyone who has a משה in him, האט מקבל געווען די תורה נאָך דער, נאָך דער הקדמה פון ויבוא משה בתוך הענן. And when did he really get the Torah? After he went through the smoke, וואס ענן איז כעין עשן, which is cloud, which is smoke, ווען ער מוז אָנקומען צו דער שביל בתוכו, and he got through the smoke, and he had a path, and משה did that and we all have to do that. כאטש דאס איז לשעה בחיצוניות אן ענין פון העלם, even though time, temporarily superficially it's a concealment, אבער דורך דעם קומט מען צו צו ויהי בהר ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה, this makes to reach the next level, which is the end of the פסוק, that משה was in the mountain 40 days and 40 nights, און ער האט תורה בשלימותה, you get the whole Torah completely. און דערנאך, דאס יעדער ממשיך in גופו וחלקו בעולם, and everyone brings in his himself, his own body, in his share, part of this world. ודאס איז דער המשך פון נאך פרשת משפטים, פרשת תרומה. What do we get after this פסוק? It comes to פרשת תרומה. What is in פרשת תרומה? The משכן, ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכם, make a מקדש and I'll dwell there. פון די דברים גשמיים, כזה זהב וכסף וגו', from all the physical things, gold, silver, etc., מאכט מען א מקדש לה' יתברך, make a בית המקדש for השם, ודורך דעם פירט זיך אויס די כוונה פון נתאוה הקדוש ברוך הוא להיות לו יתברך דירה בתחתונים, and the כוונה of Hashem to make a dwelling place in this lower world is fulfilled. What what's So to make our We'll have to enter before we You said we have to enter It's enter the cloud, the smoke. That means גשמיות. You get involved in the in the in the in the in in the גשמי The blackness of the גשמיות. It's excitement. But we have to know that we have a protection, we have the שביל, and we're going to come, and we have to do it, otherwise there won't be מתן תורה. Even a stone, lowest thing is burning, right? Yes, a דומם. The rocks seemingly burning. Yeah, yeah. Is there another רמז when we talk about 40? I know we never usually come out to this topic about 40 days and 40 nights. What's the what's the מעלה? Yeah, yeah. 40 So, it's supposed to be it's like fire, but it wasn't really fire. By us it really has to be fire. Thanks a lot. How can we not wait for you? You're the whole מסדר. You're the whole Whole חיות.
