One of the things that the commanded to bring to the Terumat HaMishkan, like the pasuk says וזאת התרומה אשר תקחו מאתם, this is the terumah, so one of the things was עורות תחשים, the skins of the תחש. What's תחש? פירש Rashi, תחש מין חיה, a kind of חיה. והנה ברז״ל מצינו פלוגתא בדבר, in חז״ל we find an argument. Basically an argument if the תחש was a חיה or a בהמה, the two different types of animals. In Bavli, מסכת שבת in Gemara, הובא דברי רבי שמעון בן לקיש בשם רבי מאיר, says like this: תחש שהיה בימי משה בריה בפני עצמה היה, says there that this was a kind of animal by itself, ולא הכריעו בה חכמים אם מין חיה או מין בהמה הוא, the חכמים could not decide, although the חכמים don't have any proof whether it was a חיה or a בהמה, there's separate דינים. Which are the separate דינים on a חיה and a בהמה? Kisum are the main דינים. חלב of a בהמה is אסור, חלב of a חיה is מותר. And the other, a חיה is חייב בכיסוי הדם, and a בהמה is פטור from כיסוי הדם. But the חלב חיה is not. You can't bring a קרבן of a חיה. But they didn't know whether it's a חיה or a בהמה. So here we have a safek. אבל
בירושלמי, it's there, Yerushalmi it says, רבנן אמרי מין חיה טהורה. It's clear the רבנן say it was a חיה, a כשר חיה. וכן איתא Tanchuma, it says in תנחומא, רבי יהודה אומר, יהודה says: חיה טהורה גדולה היתה במדבר, it was a big חיה, כשר חיה in the מדבר, ובעורה ששה גוונין, and the skin had six colors, ונטלו הימנה ויריעות, and they took it also and they made the יריעות. So it comes out that there is a whole safek, machloket, a safek whether it's a חיה or a בהמה. ועל פי זה הרבה מהמפרשים קבעו רש״י דבירושלמי, so according to this, when Rashi says מין חיה, Rashi is trying to tell us like the Yerushalmi, or the Rashi thinks that it's a חיה, not a בהמה. Why they Why didn't they do What? Why they don't make the comparison with the זרזיר? they didn't know if this is kosher or not. So they left it with the עורב. So he went to the עורב it was not kosher. Yeah, it's in a Gemara Megillah, but So the same thing, so they should do the same thing, see with whom he's going, he's going friendly Who should see? Who should see? The rabbis. The rabbis did in time, they didn't have any more. At the time it only exist in time of the Mishkan. In time of the Mishkan they knew. But the Chachamim later on didn't know. Ah then the Chachamim should see. They could see that was he was not there anymore. Going with the friendly with the חיה? There was no חיה at all There was no תחש anymore. We'll see. People at the time of the Mishkan maybe didn't know. Maybe. Maybe yeah. I mean Okay. Maybe they did, I don't know. Tzarich iyun, so the Rebbe says, we have to understand: מנא ליה לרש״י בפשוטו של מקרא להכריע בין דעות אלו שהוא מין חיה? Where does Rashi take in simple peshat in פסוק? So whatever Rashi says has to have its הכרח. You have to prove it from the peshat. Where in the Chumash is any indication that was a חיה and not a בהמה? That's one thing. It was only a temporary thing. והרבה גוונין היו לה, it had a lot of colors, לכך מתרגם ססגונא. The Targum translates תחש as ססגונא. The word ססגונא is made up of the words שש גוון, ששש ומתפאר בגוונין שלו. It's an animal that's proud, happy, and proud of its colors. That's a kind of animal. Now, והנה הטעם שהוצרך רש״י לומר דלא היתה אלא לשעה, לכאורה, רש״י again, Rashi only explains, one klal is that Rashi does not bring מאמרי חז״ל. Rashi only explains pshat in pasuk. If the pasuk is understood and everything is clear, Rashi has nothing to say. Best proof is you have tens of pesukim that there are so many מאמרי חז״ל on it that Rashi doesn't say a word. Because in pshat there's nothing to, no problem. So here, why does Rashi tell us it's only לפי שעה, that it was only existed then? So, דיש לומר בפשטות, דכיון שלא ידוע ללומד המקרא בחוש מקרא שיש מין חיה ששמו תחש, a person who learns it, even a child, you know, all the different animals, and there's no such animal as תחש. So how How do we say there was an animal תחש? So that's why מפרש רש״י, רש״י has to explain things that should make sense: שאכן אינה חיה ידועה, indeed people don't know it, כי לא היה היתה אלא לשעה. So Rashi has to explain because there is a simple question that arises when we learn the pasuk. And by the way, the Rebbe says: ועל פי זה מובן גם הטעם שנקט רש״י דלא היתה אלא לשעה. This could also explain why Rashi says this is only for a temporary time. כי רש״י doesn't say that the Aibishter made a miracle it should be there. That's like a miracle. Rashi just says the fact it was only for the time. שזהו על דרך לשון הבבלי, similar to the Bavli, where it says a לשון, ולפי שעה נזדמנה לו למשה, משה got it just temporarily, ועשה ממנה משכן, נעשה המשכן ונגנזה, then it was hidden. ולא כהירושלמי, not like the Yerushalmi where it says כמין חיה הייתה, ברא הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה במדבר. Yerushalmi says the Eibishter created a special animal then. כיוון שעשה בו מלאכתו, מלאכת המשכן, ונגנזה, and then it was hidden. Rashi doesn't say that the Eibishter made a special creation. So according to Rashi, it was there be'etzem. So, does that mean that it's life is still They're still around? Could be, yeah. Could be. But according to Yerushalmi, it was a special creation, special nes. Rashi doesn't say it. Nechemiah baTanchuma, Rashi doesn't say like in נחמיה, מעשה ניסים הייתה, was a miracle, ולשעה שנבראת בו בשעה נגנזה, it was created and then it was hidden. Why doesn't Rashi say it? For a simple reason. Rashi does only says things which is muchrach from the peshat of the pasuk. See, the fact that Chazal say there was a nes, that doesn't is not enough proof for Rashi. You see, even whatever it's talking about The animal, תחש. Everybody says They don't exist anymore? Yeah, תחש, they're still around, could be, yeah. What do they look like? There could have been a couple of them, not only one. Yeah. No, there was definitely more than one. And if few was killed and a few was still Yeah, yeah. So, in the if Rashi only takes things from the pasuk, only what's muchrach from the pasuk, in the pasuk there's no hechreach that there was a nes. So Rashi doesn't even bring that the תחש was hidden. All Rashi says, it was לפי שעה. It was only there at that time, for some reason, it's not there anymore. There was no nes, and the Eibishter didn't make a nes to hide it. Now, Chazal explains that, but Rashi is not limited to the way Chazal explain. What Rashi does is, he only explains So al kol panim, we know the first part of Rashi where he says it was only there temporarily, we know what the purpose of that Rashi is. We also understand why Rashi had to add had a lot of colors. כיוון שאינה חיה ידועה, כי לא הייתה אלא לשעה, it was only temporary, so we don't know anything about it. Rashi has to say why was this special, Hashem picked, the תחש must have been something special. It doesn't say that you have to paint the skin of this animal So Rashi says you had to paint it red. So Rashi explains, like the others, what was how was the תחש רש״י it doesn't say in the פסוק what you did with it. So al pi peshat, we have to understand not what you did, why why did the Eibershter pick תחש, what's so special? Like that, maybe because it was red, maybe it was smooth, maybe because it's so thick. Right, right! But we need some reason for it. In other words, the Torah should indicate somehow what is with this animal, that this animal was chosen. לכן פירש רש״י שהרבה גוונין היו לו, וואס עס קוקט, it had a lot of colors. וממילא you didn't have to paint it, and it was a special, nice nice skin, nice leather. So there, that's what it is. So all these things which are noge'a when you learn the peshat in פסוק. Pashut a guy learns peshat pashut without anything else, needs certain explanations, so Rashi says it. אבל דא עקא, אבל צריך עיון, מהו האריכות לשון רש״י, but we have to understand why does Rashi go into this אריכות, ולכך מתרגם ססגונא. Therefore the Targum calls it ססגונא. ששש ומתפאר בגוונין שלו, that it's proud and happy with its colors. Rashi could have said, like he does sometimes, כתרגומו. And you see in parenthesis, it says ססגונא, because sometimes Rashi says כתרגומו and that's it. Sometimes he says what the Targum says. Okay, whatever it is. So he could have said תרגומו or both. This would explain everything! If Rashi would say Targum says ססגונא, and the word ססגונא means גוונין, that explains everything. First he says it's לפי שעה, and then he says: You know why they needed it? Why the Aibershter said to do it? Because it had a lot of colors. מהי ההדגשה של רש״י, why does Rashi have to say number one, ולכך מתרגם? So Rashi, after he says it had a lot of colors, therefore the Targum says it. What, Rashi is a פירוש on the Targum? You explain why the Targum explanations in Targum? And also we understand, why do we need the סיומא? The פירוש in the Targum? לכך, therefore he says, and he explains what the Targum says, why is it called ססגונא, ששש ומתפאר בגוונין שלו. It's happy and it's proud of its colors. Yeah, yeah, but does Rashi The Targum says, yeah, that's the peshat in the Targum. So the kashya is, why is that Why does Rashi bring the Targum and explain? Why he brings the actual word ססגונא, we need to know, because that's the place where we see it had colors, because the word ססגונא or ססגונו, גוונין is a color. It was extra. That yeah, that's special. But when Rashi every the Rebbe's שיטה in the whole דרך הלימוד in Rashi is a complete, you know, נו, דרך. Every word is exact. Not one extra word, not one less word. And not only that, every word is exact in דרך הפשט! You can't say there's a remez here, it's exact because there's a remez in קבלה, רמז in חסידות, that's there too. Or a remez, or an extra, it's Rashi, or Rashi quotes a מאמר חז״ל. Rashi doesn't quote a מאמר חז״ל. If Rashi, wherever Rashi quotes a מאמר חז״ל, it's all part of pshat. Like Rashi gave the הקדמה in בראשית, אני לא באתי אלא לפרש פשוטו של מקרא, and that's all. דרך הפשט, it's pure pshat. Lichorah, did you know רש״י פירש התרגום, it came from the Gemara? Lichorah, when Rashi brings pshat in Targum, it comes from the Gemara. What do we see in the Gemara? The גמרא מפרש דברי רבי נחמיה, the Gemara explains the words of רבי נחמיה that מכסה אחד של עורות אילים מאדמים ועורות תחשים היה, there was one cover made up of a skin of the אילים מאדמים and of the תחשים. And the Gemara says ודמי כמין תלא אילן, it looked like a תלא אילן, it's the name of an animal, Rashi says. I guess there's an animal in the time of the Gemara, I don't know what animal, a תלא אילן which had a lot of colors. ולית תלא אילן, it was like תלא אילן, but it wasn't. Maybe this was תלא אילן? Why? דאילו התם טמא והכא טהור, the Gemara says, because here תלא אילן is a treifah animal, this a kasher. How do you know it's a kasher animal? Cuz you could only use for the Mishkan kasher animals. מן המותר בפיך, it says anything that you do for Shamayim has to be mutar. אמר רב יוסף מור in ketoret was the only exception. תלא is not a patch? תלא, a patch? תלא, no, that's a טלאי. No, that's a טלאי. טלאי is something else. Rav Yosef says, it's all part of the And the Gemara says that's why the Targum says ססגונא, because it's happy with its colors. וזהו כלשון רש״י, it's exactly like Rashi. לכך מתרגם ססגונא, that's what Rav Yosef says: אי הכי. So Rashi uses the same לשון. Instead of אי הכי he says לכך, that's why the Targum says ססגונא ששש ומתפאר בגוונין שלו. So Rashi basically seems to be quoting the Gemara. אבל כבר נתבאר כמה פעמים, I said many times, אין דרכו של רש״י בפירושו על התורה, it's not the derech of Rashi in his pshat in תורה להעתיק לשונות חז״ל, just to bring לשונות, כי אם רק הנוגע לפירוש הפשוטו של מקרא, only what's נוגע to pshat. The Gemara has even different כללים, but why did Rashi bring that לשון הגמרא when to pshat it has nothing to do? The taytsh, the Targum, ססגונא. ומה גם, especially בנדון דידן שכוונת רב יוסף במה שכתב אי הכי, when Rav Yosef says אי הכי, therefore the Targum says ססגונא, דא שהתרגום מסייעתו, he's not saying therefore, he's saying I have a ראיה, אינה רק להוכיח שלתחש יש בהרבה גוונין, it wasn't just to prove it has a lot of colors, אלא בעיקר לפרש שהוא טהור, דלכן תלא אילן הוא טמא. The main thing that he was saying is the whole sugya in Gemara there is whether it's, that sugya, can you use טרפה things for the Mishkan or can you not? So that's what he says: it's like this, but it's not like it, why? Because this is tamei. The main thing he wants to say is it's not like it. Since it was kasher, he says that's why the Targum says ססגונא, because ססגונא means אינה דומה לתלא אילן, דיש בו גוונין הרבה. תלא אילן has one color or a few colors, this has a lot of colors. So basically what Rav Yosef is trying to say, not what the way it seems from Rashi. Rashi is trying to say it had a lot of colors and using the lashon. You can't say he's quoting the Gemara, cuz the Gemara's kavanah is a different kavanah, to say that it's tahor. But anyway, that's in brackets, but the main kushya is Rashi would not just bring a Gemara because the Gemara says so. Like I said, Rashi could bring in every pasuk 50 Gemara's. The best re'iyah is there's the Sefer Torah Shleimah, which is he brings every Chazal that's there in Midrash or in Gemara or whatever on Chumash, and it has 30 volumes. If Rashi would do that, it would be pretty big. So Rashi doesn't. Rashi chooses עמל ועמל to bring a Chazal because that's the only time it's noge'a to peshat. Some say like Rashi comes to explain the Targum, and the peshat like this: כיון דכתב רש״י ולא היתה אלא לשעה, since Rashi says that it was only temporary, איך נאמר בתרגום בבבל שגם לחיה זו שלא היתה ידועה להם לפני זה ואחרי זה, how could the Targum, how could could you taytsh, could you give a name to an animal what Rashi says לפי שעה? And what did they name the animal? The Targum says ססגונא, it's his name. How did the Targum know the name? There's no such animal around. An animal that's around, you could say this is the name, that's the name. It's only לפי שעה, so what does the Targum... So Rashi is going to explain the Targum, and he's going to explain this. The תרגום ססגונא, what he means to say is the Targum is not giving a name, he's giving a description. שאין כוונת התרגום שזוהי שם תחש בארמית, that this is the name of תחש in Aramaic is ססגונא, אלא זהו תיאור מראהו של תחש, that's the description of what it looked like, ששש בגוונין שלו. ססגונא means that it's a kind of animal that's happy with its colors. But it's not the name, and that's what Rashi explains. So what is Rashi doing according to this שיטה of the מפרשים? Who are the מפרשים? Chanukat HaTorah and the Chiddushei Chatam Sofer. Chanukat HaTorah fun Rav Reb' Heshel. Anyway, so they taytsh that this is Rashi is going to explain because the Targum is not understood. So Rashi is going to explain the Targum. But the Rebbe says, Rashi is not a פירוש on Targum. Whenever Rashi brings the Targum it's to explain פשט in פסוק. Like over here, why does Rashi bring the Targum? Because you learn the pasuk, you have a problem. Why did the Aibershter say תחש? You have to understand. So he says the Targum says, ססגונא, so many colors, we understand. But he's not going to explain pshat in Targum, and that's not the inyan of Rashi. יש לומר אבל הביאור בזה בפשטות, if we say very pashut, going back to the first part of Rashi where he said a מין חיה, and the question was where does Rashi get from Chumash, from pshat, from פירוש פשוטו של מקרא that it's a חיה and not a בהמה? Says the Rabbi like this: רש\"י בפירושו מין חיה לא בא לשלול הפרוש שתחש הוא מין בהמה. It didn't mean to say it's a חיה and not a בהמה, אלא לשלול כסלקא דעתך שתחש הוא שם צבע. It's an animal! How else could you learn? עורות תחשים you could taytsh skins that was dyed, colored with the color of תחש. עורות אילים are skin of אילים, of rams, and מאדמים means painted red. וכשם שעורות אילים מאדמים פירושו עורות אילים שצבועים היו אחרי בעיבודן, עורות אילים מאדמים they were עורות אילים, מאדמים is not a name of an animal, מאדמים means that after it was made into leather, it was painted, כן יש מקום לפרש ועורות תחשים שצבעו עורות בצבע הנקרא תחש. Maybe there's a it's a color that's called תחש. ועל דרך הדעה שמצינו בירושלמי, we takeh find an opinion in the ירושלמי, דרבי יהודה אומר תיינין לשם צבעו נקרא, עורות אילים he taytshes what this means is, עורות אילים צבועים היו עורות תחשים, ונקראים תחשים על שם צבעו שהוא דומה לתחשים. So that make, they takeh mean that they were painted with a color which is similar to תחשים, whatever color it is. רבי נחמיה אומר לקטינין, which means צבע, it's a different type of color. But the bottom line is that in Yerushalmi we see that he taytshes תחש, one pshat, that תחש is a name of a color, it's a name of a paint. So mimela when you learn the pasuk here, עורות תחשים, you could learn the same peshat. לכן כתב Rashi תחשים, תחשים מין חיה, וכוונתו בפשטות, what does he mean? שלקחו עור של מין חיה ששמה תחש, they took skin from an animal called תחש, ולא שלקחו עורות אילים, they took עורות of a different animal, of אילים, וצבעו אותו בצבע תחש. Now, how does טאקע Rashi know that? Everything has to be muchrach in peshat. Maybe taake, maybe תחש like the Yerushalmi, maybe תחש means tzava? וההכרח של Rashi בפשטות, so the hechreach of... and again the hechreach can't be from a Gemara, from a midrash, it has to be from peshat. כי אם הכוונה שצבעו את עורות אילים בצבע של תחש, if you're going to learn that it means that it was skin of אילים dyed, painted תחש, haveh lei lemeimar, it should have said עורות אילים מאדמים ותחשים. עורות אילים which is red and תחש. You can't repeat... Why repeat ועורות תחשים? Make the word עורות again? מזה שהכתוב מוסיף ועורות תחשים, it repeats the word עורות, מובן שאין אלו העורות אלים המדובר לפניהם, that it's a different עורות! First it says עורות אילים, and then it says again, אלא שהם עורות של תחש, and תחש is a מין חיה. It couldn't be together? It could mean that they were painted together? In one one color, it was painted... Why would you Why would you think so? Why would you think... Is that a דרך העולם? I mean, the Torah doesn't say something and it means two things. ו is mafsik. Should have said עורות אילים, אילים מאדמים, מאדמים ותחשים. ובפשטות it wouldn't be like that. So now we know why Rashi, what Rashi says, and why he says it, and what he means with the words מין חיה. וזהו גם ההמשך בדברי רש\"י על כך מתרגמינן ססגונא, that's why Rashi adds the second part, it's called ססגונא, ששש ומתפאר בגווניו שלו, that it's happy and proud with its colors. ובזה בא רש\"י להביא ראיה מהתרגום, he wants to bring a re'aya from תרגום שאינו סתם שם צבע שצבעו בעורות, that it's not a paint that they painted the עורות, אלא שהוא מין חיה. The re'aya is that Since the תרגום טייטשes ססגונא, שהחיה שש ומתפאר בגווניו שלו, that it's happy with its colors, a siman that the colors are there from
before. The fact that you say that it's an animal that's happy with its colors, it can't be it's a name, it's a name of a dye! So from the תרגום that explains, Rashi says, I have a re'aya to my pshat. ולכן לא כתב רש\"י בקיצור כתרגומו ססגונא, like they ask, Rashi should have said if you just want to say what it was, ססגונא would have been enough to teach you that it had colors, כי אז היה מקום לפרש שכוונת התרגום היא שתחש היא צבע המורכב מציורים הרבה גוונין. ססגונא, and this, if not he טייטש'ס, it could mean it's a name of dye, a dye that's mixed up of a lot of colors. כי ססגונא פירושו שישה גוונין, סס could be even שישה. The word ש... סמ״ך סמ״ך sometimes is six. על דרך הדעה בתנחומא שבעור התחש שישה גוונין. In Tanchuma there is such a דעה, takke, that it had six. אלא מדגיש ששש ומתפאר בגווניו שלו. על ידי זה מובן שכוונת התרגום מן החי. Because even in the תרגום itself, in the תרגום, ססגונא, how do you know it doesn't mean a color? Maybe ססגונא means, yeah, six colors, so it's still a dye, a dye mixed up with a lot of colors, it's very nice. But if the תרגום, if the pshat in the תרגום is that it's happy with its colors, oh, that means it's an animal which is happy. אבל עדיין צריך עיון קצת בזה, לשון רש״י ששש ומתפאר בגווניו שלו. How does Rashi know that's the pshat in תרגום? Huh? How does Rashi know the תרגום is does this, six colors? The word ססגונא. He should explain this. No, that it's not that, it could mean six colors. That's, look, pshat in in תרגום is one thing, is that Rashi is מחבר פשט אין פסוק. Now, if you if you learn that pshat in Targum, then it fits the way he is saying, but the הכרח in פסוק is from the הכרח that he said before. The הכרח is not from the Targum. But it didn't say it twice, so mimela we know it. And the Targum fits to it, if you learn pshat in Targum like this. So, so Rashi says, \"Yes, it's this is that what you can learn pshat in Targum.\" But like I said before, every word in Rashi is meduyak, every word. So, why does Rashi say \"ומתפאר\"? ססגונא is שש בגוונין. And that would be enough to show that it's an animal, it's not a color, if it's happy. לכאורה, היה מספיק שש, כלשון הגמרא. מאי הוספה של, לא רק שש, אלא גם מתפאר בגווניו שלו? Why does Rashi add up to say he is also proud of the colors? Must be meduyak, too. יש לומר שבזה מרומז רש״י גם המעלה מיוחדת שבעורות תחשים. Now Rashi wants to say, be מרומז here, that this adds another maalah in taking the skin of תחשים. שאינו רק בגלל יופי הגוונין שביריעות אלו, not only because it had beautiful colors, and mimela that made it nice, אלא לפי שזה מדגיש את תכונת התחש, that shows the personality or the the characteristics of this animal. שעורות וגוונין אלו פעלו ב, פעלו בהתחש שיתפאר בו, what it made the תחש feel, feel proud. וזהו עניין עיקרי בעיקר בכך שזה חלק משמו בלשון התרגום. And it's not stam as a fact. If the if סס, we put it into the name of the animal, סס, and he taytshes the שש ומתפאר, that means that this is a characteristic that has to do with animal. And what's noge'a? So, big deal. וזהו גם המעלה והחשיבות בתרומת עורות תחשים. This is another maalah why the Eibershter wanted they should bring this skin. מובן ופשוט שתרומה ממין החי עולה בחשיבות על תרומה מן הצומח. שכל If you give a terumah from animals, which is chai, higher than tzomeach, is greater. על דרך שמצינו בקרבנות על המזבח. We find by the korbanot, you have korbanot of an animal, korbanot of flour, a קרבן מנחה. Which one is higher? The animals, because that's chai, and this is tzomeach. ובזה חשיבותן המיוחדת של עורות תחשים גם לגבי עורות אילים מאדמים. This shows how important this was, that's even greater than the עורות אילים מאדמים. לא רק לפי שבעורות תחשים היו הרבה גוונין, not only because they had a lot of colors, שלא כשאר הצבעים שרובן כל אחד בפני עצמו, not like the other colors where each were one color: תכלת, ארגמן, תולעת שני, each were one color. So, that's true, but besides that, אלא בעיקר משום שהגוונין הם חלק מעור התחש עצמו. What is he's mitpa'er means this is part of him, this is etzem of the of the of the of the תחש. שבנדבת עורות אילים מאדמים, שצבעו אותם לאחר שהופשט העור, by the other skin when they painted it, הרי הנדבה מן החי היא רק בנוגע לגוף העור עצמו, then the nedavah of a living thing was the skin. אבל לא בנוגע לצבע. The color was not chai. The color was an addition. What do you make the color from? K'veys, I don't know, from from תכלת you take from חלזון, but other things you take from herbs, from what grew. מה שאין כן בנדבת עור תחש, שהרי גם הצבע בכלל הנדבה דחי. Even the color is a living thing. מאחר שהצבעים הם חלק מעצם עור החי, because the color is part of the עור, ועד שזה נוגע לתכונת החי, it's part of the characteristic of the חי, ששש ומתפאר בגווניו שלו, because it's happy with it. So, this is why Rashi adds that words, to add in the pshat of understanding why the Aibershter told them to take תחש. ויש לומר שזהו הטעם נוסף לכך שיריעות אלו היו המכסה עליון ביותר של המשכן. This is another reason why this was the very, very top cover, because we had the the יריעות אהל and יריעות עיזים. This was the top. Why? כי נוסף על זה שיריעות אלו עלו ביופיים על שאר, besides that it was the nicest. So, on the outside, you want to see the nicest. So, the Aibershter made on the top, on the outside, you see the nicest. ועוד זאת, and besides that, אינו דומה יופיו של עור צבוע לגבי יופי ותפארת של עור שיש בו ריבוי גוונין בטבעו ובתולדתו. If you look at, so this is, now, it's natural. If you see something that's painted and something that's natural that color, it's much nicer. הנה בעורות תחשים הרי הגוונים חלק מתכונת חי. The colors were, I don't the Rebbe doesn't mean this, but I'm adding, the colors were alive. Like you see sometimes when someone paints something it it's the color shines, the color is different, and that's what Does it mean חיה? Maybe it means that it's a living animal, not דווקא חיה? No, what they put it up, it wasn't alive. I'm just saying the expression \"alive\". It was from a living animal. No, obviously, that's what he's trying to say, it's a living animal. In other words, a חיה versus a בהמה. Well, that's what the Rebbe says, that's not what he's trying to say. He's trying to say it's an animal versus paint. It's a living animal versus paint. Only the birds can see it on top. This was going through my mind, but I'll tell you: The Levi'im were how big according to one peshat in the Gemara? 10 10 אמות high. All of the Levi'im. Yeah, it was a little bit like Moshe, and it went over the משכן, so when they walked, they could see it. What do you see in the ceiling? Huh? What do you see in the ceiling? Outside. What do you see in the ceiling inside? Inside, inside you saw the bottom part. You see the bottom of it, yeah. It was always the You didn't see it. You didn't see it? No. But on the outside, you saw it. If you went over with a helicopter, you could see it. It was also on the side. No, no, it was just the top. The only the two יריעות, יריעות עזים came down to the sides. These were just on top. No, there were two levels to the משכן. Huh? The second floor to the משכן. No, it wasn't. No, so why did why did you see the ceiling and if when you are in the first You could inside you could see the ceiling, but that's not the colors. layers. There are other יריעות, יריעות אוהל. Then you had on top of that יריעות עזים, and on top of that you had this. So if someone looked at the outside, and I'm sure when the sun shined on it, like it reflected, and someone was beautiful. The sun didn't shine on it, you had the clouds. Huh? You had the clouds, so the sun couldn't shine on it. At night when the עמוד עמוד אש shined. Yes. The sun shined. ויש להוסיף ביאור בזה שמכסה עורות תחשים היה מכסה עליון על המשכן The Rebbe said, \"Now we
can add another point why the מכסה the עורות תחשים were the top.\" כי מעלה זו שבעורות תחשים שגם הצבע שבהם הוא חלק מהחי, this מעלה that in this skin, that even the color was part of the חי, יש בה ביטוי מיוחד של התוכן הפנימי דכללות המשכן, has a special expression of what the משכן was. This shows more of what the משכן was, that's why it was on the outside where you could see it. Why? חי רמז על הקדוש ברוך הוא. Chai is a remez to the אייבערשטער, שנקרא חי העולמים. The Eibershter lives forever. לפי שהוא יתברך מקור החיים של כל העולמים, because the Eibershter is the מקור of everything. That's חי, חי העולמים, the chiyut of all the olamot. ובלשון Rambam, the Rambam says, כל הנמצאים משמים וארץ ומה שביניהם לא נמצאו אלא מאמיתת המצאו, everything from heaven and earth, everything between, came from Him. ומסתבר שאין כוונת הרמב\"ם שמה שכתב שכל הנמצאים לא נמצאו אלא מאמיתת המצאו, מסתבר, it's pashut, it makes sense, that the Rambam when he says everything and comes only from His true being, doesn't mean רק על כל הנמצאים בכללות שלהם. Doesn't mean the כללות, everything comes from Him. Every detail. The fact that this is brown and this is this, this is comes from from the Eibershter. Every detail of every existence comes from Him. Everything in the world is divided into three parts. There is etzem, there's an existence of something. Now everything is the same. This is something, and this is something, and this is something. Everything is be'etzem something. Then you have the second thing, תכונתו המיוחדת של כל דבר, everything has its own characteristics, שבזה כל דבר חלוק מחבירו, everything is different, כמו אש ומים, fire or water, החלוקים בטבעם ותכונתם, which have different nature, different characteristics, ששריפתו של אש הוא היפך מטבע של מים, they're opposites. Then you have, besides that, שאר פרטי כל דבר, other details, שאינם חלק מעצם תכונתו ותוכנו. You have the עצם זאך, you have the the the teva of the zach, and then you have small side things, which are also pratim in it, but that's not the מהות of the thing. Not everything becomes the מהות of it. וכל עניני הנברא הנ\"ל, everything of all these three ענינים, לא נמצאו אלא מאמיתת המצאו, comes from Him. דהיינו נוסף על עצם מציאות הנברא, not only is the etzem existence of a creature, ועל תוכן וגדריו המיוחד של הנברא, and every special characteristic of a נברא, וגם הפרטים הטפלים נמצאו מאמיתת המצאו. Even the details which are side, secondary things, not important things, but they're there, also comes from Everything comes from Him. וזהו ענינם של יריעות מעורות תחשים שבמשכן. That's the inyan of these יריעות of תחשים. כי מכיון שענינו של המשכן הוא ושכנתי בתוכם, השראת השכינה באופן גלוי, since the Mishkan is to show the Shechinah comes down in a revealed way, הרי מובן, we understand, שבו היה באופן גלוי שזה שאמיתת המצאו של הקדוש ברוך הוא נמצא בכל הנמצאים ובכל
In other words, the Mishkan expressed the true מציאות of the Eibershter. So the Mishkan obviously expressed the fact that the Eibershter is the source of every detail, since that's the fact. Everything in the Mishkan was a דוגמא to the ציורים שלמעלה. All the עולמות עליונים, with all the the malachim and everything, were all it's higher. And came down the Mishkan, every detail was a דוגמא, a mirror of למעלה. שזהו לפי שהם השתלשלות מהם, because everything in the Mishkan was on the השתלשלות of למעלה. Since the Mishkan expressed the true metzius of the Oibershter, and the true metzius of the Oibershter is that every detail comes from Him, and the Mishkan is that expresses the truth. So they had to express somehow this idea that every detail comes from Him. Where do we see that in the Mishkan? וזה נרמז That's hinted בעורות חושך, שגם צבע העורות שאינו אלא דבר חיצוני, even the color The color is not the mahut of something, and even the color הוא ממין החי. Even the color connected with the chai. What's the chai? Chai we said is a remez of the Oibershter. להורות, to show, שגם הדברים הכי חיצוניים של הנבראים, even the most superficial things that the נבראים, עד לצבע שלהם, the color, לא נמצאו אלא מאמיתית מציאותו, only comes from Him, which is חיי העולמות, it's the Oibershter. ויש להוסיף בזה, the Rebbe adds even more: על פי ביאור Admor Hazaken Torah Or, the Alter Rebbe explains in Torah Or, על דרך ההפרש בין חומר הנברא לצורתו, this gives a little deeper, the difference between the chomer of the nivra, chomer which is the the matter, the matter, and the tzurah. The tzurah is the form, the shape. That's what he says in the Alter Rebbe says. When it says בדבר ה' שמים נעשו, came from the dibur of the Oibershter, that's the chomer. אך איכות וצורת הרקיע לדוגמא, what's with the tzurah, the shape and everything, נעשה בחפץ ה' שלא בא בכלל גילוי בדיבור ומאמר. That comes from a higher madreigah. That doesn't come from the dibur. That comes from the cheifetz, cheifetz which is the ratzon of the Oibershter. And he says why: שהטעם לזה הוא, לפי שדיבור ומאמר הוא פועל הישות שבכל הנבראים. Dibur is more יש than רצון. רצון is something more inside. דיבור is something that comes out to be an entity for itself. So, גשמיות, the חומר which is an entity of ישות, that came for from more of the Oibershter's דיבור, which is also a מציאות. ואם היו נבראים רק בחפץ ה' ורצונו בלבד, the Alter Rebbe, this is לשון of תורה אור, היו העולם בטל במציאות ממש. Since that's much eidel, so רוחניות and אלוקות it's a much refined מדריגה, the רצון. So if the חומר would come from the רצון, the חומר would be בטל, too. The חומר couldn't be a חומר. It can't be a יש if it comes from a מדריגה of אלוקות, which is very refined. שאין כן צורת הנבראים שנמשכה מחפץ ה' שלא בא בכלל גילוי בדיבור ומאמר, but the חפץ, the צורה of the נבראים comes from the חפץ, נמשך ענין הביטול בנבראים, so he says that comes from there because a צורה is not something that's tangible. When you touch this, you're not touching the צורה. Granted, you're feeling the צורה, but you're not touching the צורה is is an abstract thing. Then you see, what you're touching is the חומר. You're touching the חומר in a specific צורה. But the צורה is if this would be square and this would is round, it's the same חומר. So, the חומר that you're touching makes no difference. So, the חומר is more a רוחניות, a more an eidele zach. I mean, the צורה. So it comes from a איידעלע מדריגה. And because it's more an איידעלע זאך, that is the one that brings the bitul in the נבראים. We know, בעצם, all the נבראים are batel to the אויבערשטער. Why does it say does the sun rise in מזרח and goes down in מערב? They're bowing down. There is bitul in the נבראים, which we might not see, but it's there. The bitul of the נבראים comes from that higher מדריגה of רצון, which is more refined דרגא in אלוקות, which is not so יש, that brings that in the נבראים there should be a feeling of bitul, not יש. You think that Different חומרים, combination of the חומרים. That's what the Rambam says. There is ד' יסודות. No, it's not. The ד' is not a form, it's the combination of how much you have of עפר and how much of מים, how much of of אש, רוח. We're talking about down here. No, no. Talking about down here, the חומר down here. The חומר down here is ישות. And ישות is not batel. If you look at this, it's not batel to אלוקות. בטל באמת, but we don't see it. Because it's it's a גראבע זאך. This is a שטיק מציאות. A a shtark a big stone is a מציאות. It could געשפאלטן the קאפ of a goy. It could It's It's something it's a מציאות. But, but the tzurah is not something that's so tangible. So that shows on an איידעלערע מדרגה, which comes dibbur is a metziut, when you speak it's a metziut. Ratzon is something that sits with you, there is no separate entity. So lemalah by the Eibershter, kivayachol, is the same thing. So mimela that brings the bitul to the nivraim. See, the tzurah is a דבר חיצוני. There's nothing, no tochen in it. This tochen is a this is hard, this is a metziut. The tzurah seems not to be any metziut, it's just the shape of this. And whichever shape you make it, it makes no difference. Why like it says in Tanya, in Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah, what's the difference? How come by the olam if you say the Eibershter has to recreate the world every second, and why why does he, maybe he made the world and he left it? And the dugma they give is if you give a piece of silver to a craftsman, to a this, and he'll make a becher out of it, so he constantly have to he made it once and it's there. What did the Alter Rebbe say? Stupid example! Because what he's doing is יש מיש, not doing יש מאין. Ay, the tzurah is יש מאין, the tzurah wasn't there before, the tzurah is not a metziut. The יש, the chomer is כולל in itself all the צורות בכח. So you're not creating anything new. Mah she'ein ken the velt is a new thing, and something that's new, the moment the Eibershter will let go, it goes back to the way it was before. Kriat Yam Suf... Yeah, well that also there, so yeah. The chomer was the same like. Why takeh is there no substance to the tzurah? Substance in our world is yeshut. And the tzurah is an inyan of bitul, so it has no ישות. The tzurah itself is nothing. You can't even have a tzurah without a חומר. It's an abstract thing. Like the מציאות in the עצם מציאות הנברא there's not, what we have is not the עצם. We don't see the עצם, we see the way it's already in a in a in a in a certain way. כפי תכונת הנברא וגדריו doesn't have a מציאות like to have the מציאות of the חומר. Or the תוכן of a this is a תוכן, this is a cup and this this for that's called a מציאות. Now this
explains a deeper pshat why the top was made from תחשים. כי עניין הביטול שבנבראים שזהו התכלית והעיקר של המשכן השראת השכינה כדי לפעול ביטול גלוי לאלקות, the bitul is in נבראים, which is the purpose of the Mishkan, the purpose of the Mishkan is to bring the bitul to the נבראים. Where do you see more bitul? In the tzurah. שייך לצורת הנבראים יותר משאר חלקי הנברא, more than to other parts. And we said חי means the Eibershter, that shows that in the תחשים we see the bitul to the Eibershter so much that even the color is אדרבה, דבר חיצוני זה שייך לעצמותו של החי. Usually the דבר חיצוני is a דבר טפל. Here this became part of it, of what? Of the חי. What's the חי? The Eibershter. This is יותר מתכונות פרטיות, it's more than the other תכונות. ולכן שהתחש שש ומתפאר דווקא בגוונין שלו, it's happy with the גוונין because the גוון is its מציאות, and this is a דבר חיצוני, and the דבר חיצוני is the מציאות of the thing, which the דבר חיצוני is the צורה, and the צורה shows for bitul, so that means that here the bitul became the true being of that animal. And mimela this is the Mishkan, that's why in the Mishkan you had this animal. That's it, okay, so ועל פי הנ\"ל, let's try to finish this, ועל פי הנ\"ל, יש לבאר גם כן הטעם שדבר זה נפעל ביריעות של המשכן דווקא. Now we're saying that this expressed the bitul that's there that the Mishkan was supposed to accomplish. Why דווקא was it in the יריעות? We
have the three things, we have the כלים, the walls, and the יריעות. And these are the three things we said before. כלים, everyone was different. Every כלי had a different avoda, different things fitting to what it is. So that was in the Mishkan. That was supposed to show, see we said before there are three things: there's the עצם המציאות, then there's the פרטים which are the מהות of it, and then there are פרטים which are not. The כלים is not the עצם המציאות, because עצם המציאות are always equal. כלים, each one was different. So the כלים represents the second עניין, the פרטים. And since it was in the Mishkan used for the Eibershter, that's supposed to show that all the פרטים of things come from the Aibershter. אמיתית מציאותו כמו שהוא למעלה, that's it. אמיתת מציאות is the Oibershter. The קרשים was around. Everything inside was equal, made them a layer מקיף, all of them. But all of them The קרשים, like it says, a house. A house is something that shows that everyone is equal. A tall person, a short person, everyone walks into the house, it doesn't it's not like clothes which fit to your size. So the קרשים represents the נקודה כללית of everything. That's the first thing. And that's supposed to show, since it's part of the Mishkan, that the נקודה כללית of every מציאות in the world is אמיתת המציאות. החיוב האמיתי אמיתת המציאות, everything comes from the Oibershter. And the
The יריעות was even a bigger מקיף that surrounded even the קרשים. גם הם מורים על ענין המקיף, תכל'ס זה מקיף, אבל על מקיף נעלה יותר, a higher מדרגה, שבתוכם הוצרכו להיות צבועים, that's why they had to be colored. To show that even the superficial, the מקיף things, which are not even נוגע, because, see, the תחש especially, see like this, you can say the מקיף on the ceiling is נוגע, you need the מקיף so it shouldn't rain in, I mean, so that to have a ceiling. For the קרשים, you didn't need for that. The ceiling was there already. This is mamash a דבר טפל. And the color of it, the color of a טפל, and nevertheless it's all part of חיות. אין מקיף דקדושה, רצון וחפץ השם שלמעלה, it's a higher madreigah. So these three things we said, you have the עצם המציאות, the פרטים which are the מהות of the דבר, but the details of the difference of one another, and the פרטים which are side things. You have by every Yid, in every avodah.
Every mitzvah is three things. Number one: the מעשה המצוה, actual doing, שבזה שוים כל אחד ואחד מישראל, every Yid is the same, מגדול שבגדולים עד קטן שבקטנים. A Yid puts on tefillin, a פשוט'ער איד, same tefillin and the same way, and he does the same maaseh as Moshe Rabbeinu. When it comes to maaseh, everything is everyone is the same. That shows on the first מדרגה, the עצם המציאות, which is something that is שווה, equal by everybody. כוונת המצות, שבזה חילוקים מאחד לשני, here everyone is different, ותלוי בדרגת האדם בעבודה הפנימית שלו במוחא ולבא, it depends on what מדרגה you are, what your heart and your mind and how much you work on it. מידת הבנתו בגדולת בגדולת הבורא, it depends on how much you understand the greatness of the Oibershter, המביא, and that brings you to ahavat Hashem and yirat Hashem. Rambam, like the Rambam uses the לשון, דהיכי היא הדרך לאהבתו ויראתו, what brings a person to ahavah and yirah? בשעה שיתבונן, you think. So, obviously, if you have a better head, you'll think better, you'll have better ahavah. If you don't, you have less. והן הנסתרות לה' אלקינו, and this is what you call נסתרות לה' אלקינו. You see, maaseh is not נסתרות, as it says in חסידות, הנגלות לנו ולבנינו, that's the maaseh, everyone could see and that's something that's בגלוי. נסתרות, that's hidden, that's ahavah and yirah, this, and that is not שווה. It says on the on which pasuk does the Zohar say it? Then you have a third thing. This is the second thing, which is the details of everything, but the מהות. Kavanah is part of the mitzvah, it's not like it's a detail, but it's part of the mitzvah. Whether bediavad it's me'akev or not, depends, מצות צריכות כוונה, but it's not a side small, a side thing. But then you
have even in the mitzvah's a third level, a פרט which is not part of the mitzvah. And that is הידור מצוה, שאינו מעכב בקיום המצוה, it doesn't stop you, עד להידור בפרטים נוספים על גופו, sometimes even higher in the side things. ובפרט ענינים התלויים במנהג, certainly a you do a certain mitzvah in a certain מנהג'דיקע way, that minhag is certainly it's a פרט, but not a פרט of the מהות of the mitzvah. והנה יש מקום שיטעה אדם לחשוב, a person might make a mistake and think, שעיקר הדיוק בקיום המצות הוא רק בשני ענינים הראשונים הנ״ל. What do you have to be medayek is the first two things. Why? That you have to actually do it the way you're supposed to the ma'aseh, obviously. שכשאר אדה״ז אומר בתניא, the Alter Rebbe says this lashon in תניא, ״אם קרא קריאת שמע במחשבתו וליבו בלבד, if you said קריאת שמע in your heart, in your mind, בכל כח כוונתו, wow, with the greatest כוונה, לא יצא ידי חובתו, he didn't do he didn't do the מעשה המצוה. אבל אם הוציא בשפתיו ולא כיוון ליבו, on the other hand, if you said it, you did the ma'aseh, and you didn't have כוונה, יצא ידי חובתו בדיעבד, you're yotzei. So that for sure. וכן מובן הציור בכוונת המצוה, even kavanah people understand that's important. מצוה בלי כוונה כגוף בלי נשמה, in other words, mitzvah, it says in Zohar and the Alter Rebbe says in Tanya, a mitzvah without kavanah is like a guf without a neshamah. בשייכות וואס מ'לערנט בתניא, יש גודל ההכרח בקיום המצוות באהבת השם ויראת השם, you have to have the proper feeling, the proper kavanah, so people understand that that's also important. אבל בענינים הנוספים, ובפרט המנהגים, when it comes to
additional things, especially מנהגים, מה הוא הדיוק בהם, why do we have to be so careful with it? ובפרט מנהגים השייכים לחינוך ילדים קטנים, certainly when it comes to minhagim of children שאינם מבינים ואינם שייכים לשים על לבם מה שהם רואים ושומעים, they don't understand, they don't take to heart what they do, ומה גם טף, כילדי ערש, certainly small babies, why do we have to be so careful in these minhagim? It's not the עצם המצוה, it's not even the part, important, the מהות of the mitzvah. על זה בא ההוראה, comes the הוראה, שגם צבע, even the color, which is גדר חיצוני, it's like outside thing, it's a superficial thing, הוא חלק מן החי. The point here is it's part of the חי, שדברים בציור חיצוני צריכים לעשות עם די חיות, he even says the word חי means chayut, even the small, the the side things, as long as it's מנהג ישראל, has to be done with חיות, והחיות הבא מעצם הנשמה, just like here that the chayut of this, the צבע was part of the עצם of the בהמה. וכמה מנהגי ישראל שרשם למעלה יותר מכמה עניני דינים, some minhagim, in רוחניות their שורש is more than the halachot. ומנהג ישראל תורה היא, and then it says a lashon in ירושלמי מנהג מבטל הלכה, תשובת הרשב''א הידוע, the Rashba writes a famous teshuvah that they asked him a she'eilah and they had ראיות from the תשובות of the גאונים about a certain thing, but he said that there was a מנהג נשים זקנות to do differently, and the Rashba says you follow the מנהג נשים זקנות more than the teshuvah of the גאונים. א ברענג, yeah? Yeah. I think it brings the Aruch Hashulchan or something. I mean we've got to know not to take it too far, this Remember what he says? It's that No it's Said the same thing. Someone said when you borrow money, the halachah is you have to pay, the minhag is you don't pay. So the minhag The See, there's
certain minhagim they have One Kotzker writes that But, some minhagim are, it's not השם ישמור מנהגים that, ובפרט מנהגי ישראל, real, authentic minhagim made by גדולי ישראל or אנגענומען ביי אידן as, not you know stupid things. So, you have to be careful with this also. And Chassidus, the Rebbe brings here down here, ר' ליקוטי, הערה 45, ר' Likutei Torah, the ענין הקפות and ניסוך המים and ניסוך היין. And he explains, interesting, ניסוך היין is meforash in the תורה, ניסוך המים is only a remez in the Torah, and it's הלכה למשה מסיני, הקפות is only a minhag. Which one is Which one is more שמחה ביי אידן? He says why? Because a minhag has a higher שורש למעלה, it's so high that it can't even come down in the halachah, it can't be mitlabesh in the halacha. And that's, that's all Chassidus. That's what the Rebbe is masbir why in the מה נשתנה, which is the first, according to מנהג חב''ד, according to the Rambam, the Rif, the first she'eilah is on מטבילין. Why it's מטבילין? מטבילין is only a מנהג, חרוסת, because that's the first thing, that's the highest madreigah. But he says שכל אחד ואחד מוסיף בכל עניני תורה ומצוה, when a Yid adds to תורה ומצוה, הן בקיום התורה ומצוות בפועל ובהידור מצוה, he adds inside the mitzvah, inside the הידור מצוה הנקלט בנו ובבנינו, הן בהנסתרות לה' אלקינו, or in the hidden things, עבודת השם באהבת השם ויראת השם, והן בדיוק במנהגי ישראל, and when you're medayek in, על ידי זה נעשה ושכנתי בתוכם, the Eibershter rests in בתוכם means not only in the Mishkan, but בתוכו של כל אחד ואחד, זה מקרב ומזרז עוד יותר את בנין בית המקדש השלישי, this brings the בית המקדש, מכון לשבתך פעלת ה', this because the third בית המקדש the Eibershter will build, מקדש שלמטה מכוון כנגד מקדש שלמעלה, במהרה בימינו ממש. Amen. We
went through so fast, there's so much in this, if we stop at every piece we'd have could go for four hours. So fast. Beautiful. Did you learn this with the How everything fits, and the ruchniyut, and gashmiyut, and פשוטו של מקרא, and ruchniyut, and the mitzvot, and this, and, and, and the The עמקי, עמקי האמונה is hidden here, and עמקי, וכולו צועק every, and every, there's so much to it, and this is five pages.
