Does Rashi say this? No, Rashi says it, not here.

Rashiโ€™s Later Explanation About the Oath

Rashi says later on when Yaakov died and Yosef came to Paro and he said, could you please let me go. So Rashi, the pasuk says, so Paro said, you could go and do it like you swore. So Rashi says, why did he add like you swore? Cuz Paro first said, I'm not letting you, I don't care what you promised. So he said, but I swore. So he said, you swore? Be over on the shevuah. So Yosef said to him, azoy? I swore to you that I'm not going to tell anybody that you don't know lashon kodesh. If I'm able to be over on the shevuah, I'll be over on your shevuah, too. So Paro Oh, and Paro said, in that case, I can't I can't force you. So the reason So Rashi says it, but Rashi doesn't say it here. Rashi says it later, that Paro allowed it for that reason. So some meforshim want to bring that Rashi, bring it here too, that the same thing here, that the reason why he asked him to, what Yaakov asked him is for this reason. Is it there? Oh. So then it's ื›ืดื”, then it's ื›ืดื”, I'm sorry, then... Okay, so some meforshim say that. So the Rebbe says: ืก'ืื™ื– ืฉื•ื™ืŸ ืคื™ืœ ืžืืœ ื’ืขืจืขื“ื˜, I spoke many times, ืื– ืืœืข ืฉืืœื•ืช ื•ื•ืืก ื•ื•ืขืจืŸ ืžืขื•ืจืจ ื‘ื™ื™ื ืœื™ืžื•ื“ ืคืฉื•ื˜ื• ืฉืœ ืžืงืจื, that all the questions that come up in learning the simple pshat of the ืคืกื•ืง, ื•ื•ืขืจืŸ ืคืืจืขื ื˜ืคืขืจื˜ ืื™ืŸ ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ ืจืฉืดื™ ืขืœ ื”ืชื•ืจื”. Rashi answers every single question that's a question in simple pshat. And wherever Rashi doesn't answer a kushya that's simple, a ืกื™ืžืŸ ืจืฉืดื™ holds that it's very pashut, and you should think of it yourself. So besides the question itself, why doesn't Rashi ask this question and answer it? ื•ื•ืืก ืื™ื– ื ืฉืืœื” ืื™ืŸ ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜, it's a question in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. But the Rebbe brings a re'iyah, it's not here, how do you know Rashi answers every kushya in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜? Maybe some kushya he does, some kushiyot he doesn't. So the Rebbe says because we see there are a few places in Rashi where Rashi says, I don't have an answer to the question. Mashal, it says by ืจื‘ืงื” ืื ื™ืขืงื‘ ื•ืขืฉื•, ืื™ื ื™ ื™ื•ื“ืข ืžื” ืžืœืžื“ื ื•, I don't know. Now, if Rashi is not going to answer every kushya, so why does he have to say anything? There are more kushiyot he doesn't answer, so he doesn't answer this kushya! A siman of that except these few places, he answers every kushya. And wherever Rashi doesn't answer a kushya, so the Rebbe's klal is like this: one of the two, or Rashi holds it's so pashut that everyone could think of it himself, or based on what Rashi had already written before, we could understand it. So Rashi knows that you learned, or you're supposed to remember what you learned, you remember what he said, and based on everything that he said, you would figure it out. So one of the two. But the question here is a simple kushya in peshat: why did he make him swear? We learn pashut, we don't understand it. Peshat, and Rashi doesn't ask it. So that's a kashya, the ืขืฆื ืงืฉื™ื, and the kashya of why Rashi doesn't answer it. So when he says, "I don't know", means that there is an answer, he just doesn't know it. Well, obviously not. Who says that? What if what if the peshat is wrong? No, when the Rashi does it. Yeah, okay.

Rashiโ€™s Approach: Pure Peshat Explained

Rashi's ื“ืจืš is peshat. And this is the Rebbe's whole everyone knows that the Rebbe had a special special ื“ืจืš in in learning Rashi. The Rebbe was ืžื—ื“ืฉ a whole new ื“ืจืš in Rashi. Everything that Rashi says must be a reason in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. There's nothing that Rashi brings from the Gemara. Wherever Rashi brings something from the Gemara or from a ืžื“ืจืฉ, it's because in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜ we have to say it, and not and not that Rashi just decided to bring a ืžื“ืจืฉ. Because if Rashi would do that, every pasuk he could bring hundreds of ืžื“ืจืฉื™ื. Why did Rashi bring? So Rashi says like this: ืื ื™ ืœื ื‘ืืชื™ ืืœื ืœืคืจืฉ ืคืฉื•ื˜ื• ืฉืœ ืžืงืจื, and drash that fits to peshat, that's what Rashi says in Bereishit. So Rashi is ื“ืจืš, the Ramban is a different ื“ืจืš. The Ramban ื‘ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ writes in his ื”ืงื“ืžื”, it's not ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. It's ื“ืจืš ื“ืจืš ื“ืจืš ื”ืืžืช, ืขืœ ืคื™ ืงื‘ืœื”, and other ืžืคืจืฉื™ื. The Rashbam is closer to Rashi to peshat, but the Rashi makes this klal, so the Rebbe has there's nothing that Rashi says that's not ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. Another thing, there's nothing that Rashi says that you could say he relies because you learned the Gemara. Rashi was written for somebody who's learning just Chumash, and the Rebbe used to use the ืœืฉื•ืŸ for a ื‘ืŸ ื—ืžืฉ ืœืžืงืจื. A ื‘ืŸ ื—ืžืฉ ืœืžืงืจื, somebody who is just learning, doesn't know anything, never learned Gemara or anything, and has a good head, obviously, and learns ื“ืจืš ื”ื™ืฉืจ, ืฉื›ืœ ื”ื™ืฉืจ. Rashi is ืื•ืชื™ื•ืช ื™ื•ืฉืจ. Rashi and if you learn Rashi, you will automatically know every and everything in ื“ืจืš and only ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. This is the difference with the other ืžืคืจืฉื™ื which have pshat and drush mixed. Rashi is pure pshat, absolute pshat, nothing else. In Rashi, the Rebbe says, is also ืžืจื•ืžื– ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช ื”ืชื•ืจื”. The Rebbe that Rashi is pshat and ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช ื”ืชื•ืจื”. The other ื“ืจื›ื™ื, because pshat, remez, drush, sod, remez and ื“ืจื•ืฉ, ื ืžื•ืœ ื™ื, ื ืžื•ืœ ื ื™ืฉื˜. ืกื•ื“ื•ืช ื”ืชื•ืจื”, every Rashi is ืกื•ื“ื•ืช ื”ืชื•ืจื”. But that's not something that we see. The ื—ื™ืฆื•ื ื™ื•ืช is ืคืฉื•ื˜ื• ืฉืœ ืžืงืจื. ื‘ื ื’ื•ืข ืกื•ื“ื•ืช ื”ืชื•ืจื”, there is a famous story of a ืžืงื•ื‘ืœ who once wrote a wanted to write a ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ on Chumash. And the ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ on Chumash that he wrote, he wanted to write ืขืœ ืคื™ ืงื‘ืœื”, but he wanted to cover up, it shouldn't be ื‘ื’ืœื•ื™, ืงื‘ืœื” shouldn't be so obvious. So he wrote the whole ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ, and when he finished the ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ, and he reviewed it, he went through it, he saw that there is too much Kabbalah there. It's too open. So what did he do? He wrote it again, and this time he hid it even more. After he finished, he saw still too much. So he rewrote it a third time, to hide the it's ืขืœ ืคื™ ืงื‘ืœื”, but he hid the Kabbalah. When he finished, he gave a look, it's the words of Rashi. Because Rashi is Kabbalah, but Rashi in ื—ื™ืฆื•ื ื™ื•ืช, ื‘ืคื•ืขืœ Rashi wrote it ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. So everything has to be in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜. Nothing that Rashi says is used from ืžื“ืจืฉ. Wherever Rashi brings a Gemara is because the Gemara is ืžื•ื›ืจื— in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜, and the other places where Rashi doesn't bring the Gemara because it's not ืžื•ื›ืจื—, Rashi And also there's nothing extra in Rashi, and not nothing less in Rashi. If there's anything in pshat that has to be answered, Rashi answers it. And the Rebbe has all kinds of ื›ืœืœื™ื, when the ื“ื™ื‘ื•ืจ ื”ืžืชื—ื™ืœ of Rashi is ืžื“ื•ื™ืง exactly, it's ื ื•ื’ืข only these words Rashi is ืžืคืจืฉ, and nothing else. Some people think, oh ื“ื™ื‘ื•ืจ ื”ืžืชื—ื™ืœ, you know, he read a few words from the pasuk. So here, al kol panim what's ื ื•ื’ืข to this sicha is that the Rebbe says that it's a kashya in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜, why did he make him swear, and Rashi doesn't bring it. Noch mer, the kashya is deeper, the Rebbe says, ื“ืขืจ ืชื•ื›ืŸ ืคื•ืŸ ื“ืขื ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ, I know, ื•ื•ืขืจื˜ ื“ืืš ื’ืขื‘ืจืื›ื˜ ืื™ืŸ ืจืฉ"ื™. This nekudah that he said that it was that ืคืจืขื” let him go only because he swore, that Rashi says. ืื‘ืขืจ ืขืจืฉื˜ ืฉืคืขื˜ืขืจ, Rashi writes it later, ืื™ืŸ ื“ืขื ืกื™ืคื•ืจ ื•ื•ืขื’ืŸ ืงื‘ื•ืจืช ื™ืขืงื‘ ื‘ืคื•ืขืœ, when it tells us that Yaakov was buried, and there ื•ื•ืืก ืคืจืขื” ื”ืื˜ ื’ืขื–ืื’ื˜ ื™ื•ืกืฃ, when Pharaoh said to ื™ื•ืกืฃ, ืขึฒืœึตื” ื•ึผืงึฐื‘ึนืจ ืึถืช ืึธื‘ึดื™ืšึธ ื›ึทึผืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดืฉึฐืื‘ึดึผื™ืขึถืšึธ, go and bury your father as you swore, as he made you swear. So Rashi ืžืคืจืฉ, Rashi says why did he say ื›ืืฉืจ ื”ืฉื‘ื™ืขืš as he swore? ืฉืื ืœื ื‘ืฉื‘ื™ืœ ื”ืฉื‘ื•ืขื” ืœื ื”ื™ื™ืชื™ ืžื ื™ื—ืš, if not for the shevuah I wouldn't let you. So since Rashi brings it over there, ืื‘ืขืจ ื“ืขืจืคื•ืŸ ื’ื•ืคื ื•ื•ืืก ืจืฉ"ื™ ื–ืื’ื˜ ื“ืืก ื ื™ืฉื˜ ื‘ืขืช ืžืขืฉื” ืื™ืŸ ื™ืขื ืขื, since Rashi doesn't say it here, in the place where it says that he made him swear, ื ืืจ ืขืจืฉื˜ ืฉืคืขื˜ืขืจ ืœืื—ืจ ื”ื‘ืจื›ื•ืช, after the brachot, after every ื•ื›ื•ืœื™, ืื™ื– ืžื•ื›ื—, this proves, ืื– ื ื™ืฉื˜ ื“ืืก ืื™ื– ื“ืขืจ ื˜ืขื ื•ื”ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ ืจืฉ"ื™ ืคืืจ ื•ื•ืืก ื™ืขืงื‘ ื”ืื˜ ืžืฉื‘ื™ืข ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ. This is not the reason why he made him swear. ื“ืื™ ืœืื• ื›ืŸ, if not for that this would be the reason, ื•ื•ืืœื˜ ื“ืืก ืจืฉ"ื™ ื’ืขื–ืื’ื˜ ื’ืœื™ื™ืš ืื•ื™ืฃ ื“ื™ ื•ื•ืขืจื˜ืขืจ ื”ืฉื‘ืขื” ืœื™. ื”ืฉื‘ืขื” ืœื™, Rashi should have said it. Because that's where it belongs! Wherever there's something that needs to be answered, you don't wait for something later and say, oh, now we'll understand! On the spot you write it. ืžื•ื– ืžืขืŸ ื–ืื’ืŸ, he said before it cannot be a re'ayah from after, that's it. Right, had it been anything that Rashi said before, that could be, but you can't rely on later. That's, that's Even in the Rambam, we say, Rambam sometimes doesn't write this halachah because he relies on another halachah, but only on something that he wrote before, doesn't rely on something he's going to write later. Unless he'll tell you later. Huh? Unless something like ื•ื›ืžื• ืฉื™ืชื‘ืืจ ืœืงืžืŸ, alla that. ืžื•ื– ืžืขืŸ ื–ืื’ืŸ, we have to say, ืื– ืจืฉ"ื™ ื ืขืžื˜ ืืŸ ืื– ื“ืขืจ ื˜ืขื ืคืืจ ื•ื•ืืก ื™ืขืงื‘ ื”ืื˜ ืžืฉื‘ื™ืข ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ'ืŸ, that the reason, Rashi assumes, accepts, that the reason he made him swear is ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืฆื• ื‘ืื ื•ืฆืŸ ืขืก ืืœืก ื ืœื—ืฅ ืื•ื™ืฃ ืคืจืขื”. Maybe now it's fine, when a person promises, because he thinks he can do it, when it comes later, you never know what comes up. So what did Yaakov want? So you have to think before, make sure, to make sure that this won't happen, that won't happen, and that's what Yaakov wanted. So Yaakov- so we understand ื‘ืคืฉื˜ื•ืช, it's not something that you need Rashi to tell you, that's why Rashi didn't ask, and there's no need to to make- Because this makes sense, ืคืฉื•ื˜ that you wanted him to make sure that he should not allow any hardships, and he should always think about it. ืื™ื– ืื‘ืขืจ, ื”ืืœื˜ ืžืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ื’ืื ืฆืŸ ื’ืœืื˜ื™ืง? It's still not completely straight, smooth. ืื•ื™ื‘ Yosef Yosef ื”ืื˜ ื’ืขื•ื•ืื•ืกื˜ ืคื•ืŸ ื“ื™ ืฉื•ื•ืขืจื™ืงื™ื™ื˜ืŸ, ืื•ืŸ ืขืจ ื”ืื˜ ืคืืจืฉื˜ืื ืขืŸ ืื– ืžืขืŸ ื–ืืœ ื™ื•ืกืฃ himself also knew the hardships that could come up, ื“ืืš ืคืืจืฉื˜ืื ืขืŸ ืื– ืžืขืŸ ื–ืืœ ืžืœื›ืชื—ื™ืœื” ื‘ืื•ื•ืืจืขื ืขืŸ ืื–ื•ื™. He knew what hardships could come, so he knew what things you have to take care beforehand to make sure that you should be able to do it. ื•ื‘ืคืจื˜ ืื– ื™ืขืงื‘ ื”ืื˜ ืื™ื ื’ืœื™ื™ืš ื’ืขื‘ืขื˜ืŸ ืฉื™ื ื ื ื™ื“ืš ืชื—ืช ื™ืจื›ื™ ื•ื”ืฉื‘ืข, he said to him, "Put your hand on my ื™ืจืš and swear," ืื– ื“ืขืจ ืคืื˜ืขืจ ื–ื•ื›ื˜ ื ื—ื™ื–ื•ืง ืคื•ืŸ ื ืฉื‘ื•ืขื”. Yaakov told him that you have to swear, which meant ืžืœื›ืชื—ื™ืœื” we know there's hardships, so obviously Yosef knew these hardships. ื”ืื˜ ืœื›ืื•ืจื” ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ื”ื‘ื˜ื—ื” ืื ื›ื™, "ืื ื›ื™ ืืขืฉื” ื›ื“ื‘ืจื™ืš," so when he said, "I will do as you ask," ื›ื•ืœืœ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื•ื™ืš ื“ืขื ืขื ื™ืŸ, that itself included this idea, ืื– ืขืจ ื•ื•ืขื˜ ื˜ืืŸ ืื™ืŸ ื“ืขื ื‘ืื•ืคืŸ ืคื•ืœืฉื˜ืขื ื“ื™ืงืขืจื”ื™ื™ื˜. When he said, "I'll do it," knowing that there are hardships, so he probably meant, "I'm going to take care of the hardships." ืื•ื™ื‘ ืื–ื•ื™, ืคืืจ ื•ื•ืืก ื”ืื˜ ื™ืขืงื‘ ืื™ื ื•ื•ื™ื“ืขืจ ื’ืขื”ื™ื™ืกืŸ ื”ืฉื‘ืข ืœื™? So why did he tell him swear? See, swearing is not, see, the way we explained it, the inyan of swearing, it's not the shevuah that Yaakov needed, Yaakov didn't need the shevuah. He just needed him, needed Yosef to realize that he has to constantly do it, constantly worry about it. So the Rebbe says Yosef without a shevuah knew it. Yosef without a shevuah knew the hardships, and if he said, "I'll do it nevertheless," so Yosef knew to do it. So without a shevuah, Yosef would have done it, so we're back to the question, so why did he need a shevuah? Is the ื‘ื™ืื•ืจ ืคื ื™ืžื™ ื‘ื–ื”? Rabbi, am I allowed to ask a question? Yeah, go ahead. Is it possible that he felt guilty over the fact that he tricked his father and he wanted to be sure that his son wasn't going to trick him? No, why would he think he's going to trick him? Over there there's a reason, why would he think he's going to trick him? It might be hard to do it, he might not do it. That's what he was afraid of, but trick him? Right. So when Yosef... So Yosef promised, let's say Yosef would say to him without a shevuah, "You know, I'm telling you, I promise I'm going to do it no matter what hardships there are." So it should have been enough. If the whole... If you need a shevuah for whatever reason, then even if you say the greatest promise it doesn't help because you need a shevuah. Now we explained that it's not that you need the inyan of a shevuah, all you need is to make sure that he's constantly going to think about it and make sure to do it. Yosef told him that! Yosef told him, "I'm going to think about it, I'm going to constantly do it." So and so, then you don't need a shevuah, so we're back to the question, why did he need a shevuah? So in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคืฉื˜ maybe that's a kashya, but in ื“ืจืš ื”ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช, is the ื‘ื™ืื•ืจ ืคื ื™ืžื™ ื‘ื–ื”, there's a deeper pshat in here: ื“ืขืจ ืืจื•ื™ืกื˜ืจืื’ืŸ ื’ื•ืคื• ืฉืœ ื™ืขืงื‘ ืžืžืฆืจื™ื ื‘ืฉืขืช ืื™ื“ืŸ ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ืŸ ื ืืš ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, to take Yaakov's body out of Mitzrayim while the Yidden remain in Mitzrayim is ืœื›ืื•ืจื” ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืœื˜ื•ื‘ืชื ืฉืœ ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ. It's not for the benefit of the Yidden. ื•ื•ื™ื‘ืืœื“ ืื– ื“ืขืจ ืื™ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืขืจ ื”ืื˜ ื’ืขื–ืื’ื˜, "ืื ื›ื™ ืืจื“ ืขืžืš ืžืฆืจื™ืžื”," Hashem said to him, "I'm going down to Mitzrayim with you." ื•ื‘ืคืจื˜ ื“ื™ ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช... So in

Deeper Reason for Removing Jacob from Egypt

other words, the ืื™ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืขืจ, "I'm going with you." So if Yaakov is going out, it's almost like saying the ืื™ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืขืจ is going away. The ืื™ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืขืจ, "I'm going to be in Mitzrayim with you." If Yaakov is not there, so ื›ื‘ื™ื›ื•ืœ the ืื™ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืขืจ is not there. In ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช the way we learned that Yosef's inyan, it doesn't say here, but in different sichos the Rebbe explains ื‘ืืจื™ื›ื•ืช that the inyan of Yosef was to take, to be ืžื‘ืจืจ ืžืฆืจื™ื. So to be ืžื‘ืจืจ ืžืฆืจื™ื, to work with Mitzrayim, you have to have the koach of Yaakov Avinu, you have to have the, the Shechinah. Taking Yaakov's body out is defeating the purpose of what Yosef feels he wants to do, what he has to do. But even with all that, the ืขืฆื ื–ืืš is a ื—ืกืจื•ืŸ, there's something, imagine if you leave Yaakov in Mitzrayim. So you could feel... Remember the Rebbe, by the ืคืจื™ืขืจื“ื™ืงืขืจ ืจื‘ื™'ืก ื”ืกืชืœืงื•ืช, the Rebbe didn't... Some people have asked, "Why don't you bury him in Eretz Yisrael?" "We want him here, we want the Rebbe to be with us." Actually when they buried the ืคืจื™ืขืจื“ื™ืงืขืจ ืจื‘ื™, the ืจื‘ื™ ื‘ืฉืขืช ืžืขืฉื” made a ืชื ืื™, that if we move to Eretz Yisrael, we're going to take you along. Because wanted be, but they asked the Rebbe many times why

Rebbeโ€™s Varied Answers to the Question

doesn't he go to Eretz Yisrael, so he gave 100 different answers. Every person gave a different answer. We saw the video last week, you remember someone asked him on by by dollars, we saw it? Ah, ื’ืื˜, ืื™ื™ื ืขืจ ื ืฉื ื•ืง, ื™ื, ื ื’ืืจื ื™ืฉื˜, ื ื’ืื˜, ื ื™ื•ื ื’ืขืจ guy, ื•ื•ืืก ืžื™ืฉื˜ ื–ื™ืš ืืจื™ื™ืŸ anyway, so he asked the Rebbe, you know what the Rebbe answered him? "Because I don't have a ticket." And as he walked away, the Rebbe called him back, "But I don't mean you should buy me a ticket." But some people, the Rebbe answered all kinds of teshuvot to him. But to one person the Rebbe said, "I cannot leave a place where I cannot reach the Ohel of my father-in-law within a day, on that day. I can't leave." So the furthest he ever left was camp, and he was back the same day. But to leave a place that I shouldn't be able to come on that day to the Ohel, I'm not, I can't go. That's what he said to somebody. Because you can imagine, having the Ohel here, that's having the Rebbe here. So imagine Yaakov Avinu would be buried in Mitzrayim, how the Yidden would feel, would be able to go to the ืฆื™ื•ืŸ of Yaakov Avinu, would be the best thing. So taking out Yaakov from Mitzrayim is not benefit of the Yidden. Yosef already accomplished so much, and Yaakov was living outside of Mitzrayim. He accomplished, he's supposed to accomplish more! There's still, how many years were still left? Close to 200 years were still left of them being there. But he was sort of on the outskirts. Even but it's, but still in Mitzrayim. So since taking Yaakov out of Mitzrayim was not such a good thing, So he wanted to make him swear, and making him swear helped this ืขื ื™ืŸ. How did making him swear help? ื›ื“ื™ ื“ืืก ืฆื• ืคืืจืฉื˜ื™ื™ืŸ, ื‘ื”ืงื“ื ื”ื‘ื™ืื•ืจ, we'll explain this, first explaining, ืื– ืื™ืŸ ื“ืขื ืขื ื™ืŸ, ืฉืœื™ืœืช ื”ืงื‘ื•ืจื” ื‘ืืจืฅ ืžืฆืจื™ื, the reason concerning the ืขื ื™ืŸ why Yaakov did not want to be buried in ืžืฆืจื™ื, ื’ืขืคื™ื ื˜ ืžืขืŸ ื ื—ื™ืœื•ืง ืฆื•ื•ื™ืฉืŸ ื™ืขืงื‘ ืื•ืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ. We find a difference between Yaakov and Yosef. ื™ืขืงื‘ ื”ืื˜ ืื ื’ืขื–ืื’ื˜, "ืืœ ื ื ืชืงื‘ืจื ื™ ื‘ืžืฆืจื™ื," ื™ืขืงื‘

Yaakovโ€™s Demand Not to Be Buried in Egypt

said clearly, "don't bury me in ืžืฆืจื™ื," "ื•ื ืฉืืชื ื™ ืžืžืฆืจื™ื," "take me out of ืžืฆืจื™ื," ืžืขืŸ ื–ืืœ ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืœืื–ืŸ ืื– ืขืจ ื–ืืœ ื“ืืจื˜ ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, ืืคื™ืœื• ื‘ื™ื– ืžืขืŸ ื’ื™ื™ื˜ ืืจื•ื™ืก, until they went out, right? He didn't allow that he should stay there, maybe you could bury him and a while later you take him out. wanted as I die, take me out right away. ื“ืืงืขื’ืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื”ืื˜ ื‘ืœื•ื™ื– ืžืฉื‘ื™ืข ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ื“ื™ ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื•ื”ืขืœื™ืชื ืืช ืขืฆืžื•ืชื™ ืžื–ื”. He also told them, take my bones out. ืื‘ืขืจ ื‘ื™ื– ื“ืขื ื–ืžืŸ ืคื•ืŸ ืคืงื•ื“ ื™ืคืงื•ื“, ืื™ื– ืืจื•ื ื• ืฉืœ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, but until they went out, which was 200 years later almost, he stayed in Mitzrayim. What's the difference? Yaakov didn't want to stay. Yosef should have said the same thing, told his brothers, take me out of Mitzrayim. ื“ืขืจ ื˜ืขื ืคื ื™ืžื™ ืื•ื™ืฃ ื“ืขื ื—ื™ืœื•ืง ืื™ื–, the ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช'ื“ื™ืงืข reason, you see ื”ืขืจื” 13, the Rebbe says on the word ืคื ื™ืžื™. Al derech hapshat, you could see Rashi ื‘ืฉืœื—, that they threw him in the in the ื ื™ืœื•ืก, whatever Rashi says why they didn't take him or couldn't take him out. But what's the, everything that happens is not just simple, what's the ืคื ื™ืžื™ื•ืช'ื“ื™ืงืข, the deeper reason? So the ื˜ืขื ืคื ื™ืžื™ of the ื—ื™ืœื•ืง is like this: Yaakov is ื”ืขื›ืขืจ ืคื•ืŸ ื’ืœื•ืช ืžืฆืจื™ื. The ืžื“ืจื’ื” of Yaakov, he is beyond being affected having to do with the ื’ืœื•ืช. But the far ืืคื™ืœื• ื ืื›ื“ืขื ื•ื•ืืก ื™ืขืงื‘ ื”ืื˜ ื™ืจื™ื“ื” ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, that even though Yaakov came to ืžืฆืจื™ื, after that he became a ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืืจืฅ ื’ื•ืฉืŸ. Even in ืžืฆืจื™ื, he was in ื’ื•ืฉืŸ, ืืคื’ืขื–ื•ื ื“ืขืจื˜ ืคื•ืŸ ื“ื™ ืžืฆืจื™ื™ื, he was separate from the ืžืฆืจื™ื™ื. ืื•ืŸ ื“ืืจื˜ืŸ ื’ื•ืคื ืื™ื– ื ื™ืฉื˜ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืงื™ื™ืŸ ืžืฆื‘ ืคื•ืŸ ื’ืœื•ืช. It was ื˜ืืงืข in ืžืฆืจื™ื, it wasn't ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, but it wasn't a level of ื’ืœื•ืช. ื™ื™ื“ืŸ ื”ืื‘ืŸ ื’ืขื”ืื˜ ื˜ื•ื‘ ืืจืฅ ืžืฆืจื™ื, ื—ืœื‘ ื”ืืจืฅ, they had the best of ืžืฆืจื™ื, they had everything the best. ืื•ืŸ ื ืืš ืžืขืจ, ื•ื™ืื—ื–ื• ื‘ื” ืื™ืŸ ืืจืฅ ื’ื•ืฉืŸ, ืœืฉื•ืŸ ืื—ื•ื–ื”, they had an ืื—ื•ื–ื” in ื’ื•ืฉืŸ, they had an inheritance. ืžืฉืืดื› ื™ื•ืกืฃ, ื•ื•ืืก ื™ืจื™ื“ื” ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืื•ืŸ ืฆื•ื•ื™ืฉืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื ื’ื•ืคื. Yosef's ืขื ื™ืŸ was not to stay beyond the ืžืฆืจื™ื, he was part of ืžืฆืจื™ื. ืื—ื•ื–ื” there? ื’ื•ืฉืŸ. ื’ื•ืฉืŸ is called ืื—ื•ื–ื”. Why? Well, that's a whole ืฉื™ื—ื”. He probably brings it down here, yeah. See at length in Likkutei Sichot ื—ืœืง ื›ืดื”. What? Yeah yeah, it was ื’ืœื•ืช, not saying Yaakov... Before Yaakov came to ืžืฆืจื™ื, it wasn't in ื’ืœื•ืช. Here he was in ื’ืœื•ืช, but being in ื’ืœื•ืช, ืื™ื– ืขืจ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืืคื’ืขื–ื•ื ื“ืขืจื˜. In ื’ืœื•ืช ื’ื•ืคื, he was like a level beyond. He was in ื’ืœื•ืช. Not ื™ื™ื“ืŸ ื‘ื›ืœืœ. I'm saying but Yaakov specifically, being in galus was in a level of elevated, not really being part take partaking in the galus.

Yosefโ€™s Role Within the Galut

Yosef was part of the galus itself. Yeah, you said... Yaakov, Yaakov. No, darten by Yaakov was not a ืžืฆื‘ ืคื•ืŸ ื’ืœื•ืช, things were good. Yosef was not in Goshen. No no, by Yaakov. So there was no galus, it wasn't It was There was not only Yaakov there, it was the whole family. Right right right, right. But this was Yaakov was because of him. Yaakov was the top. And we're talking about Yaakov and Yosef, the other family, that's a different story. ืื•ืŸ ื“ืขืจ ื˜ืขื ื‘ื–ื”, because ืžื“ืจื’ื” of ื™ืขืงื‘ ืžืฆื“ ืขืฆืžื• is ืืฆื™ืœื•ืช. In Kabbalah it says that ื™ืขืงื‘'ืก ืžื“ืจื’ื” ืื™ื– ืขื•ืœื ื”ืืฆื™ืœื•ืช, ืขื•ืœื ื”ืื—ื“ื•ืช, which is a ื’ืื ืฆืŸ ื”ืขื›ืขืจ ืคื•ืŸ ืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ืจื™ืื”, that's higher than the lower ืขื•ืœืžื•ืช. He's a ืžื“ืจื’ื” that in him shines godliness, ืืœื•ืงื•ืช the way it's in the highest ืžื“ืจื’ื•ืช, which not connected to the lower ืžื“ืจื’ื•ืช, certainly to the darkness of Mitzrayim. It says in ืคืกื•ืง that the children of Yaakov is Yosef. What does that mean? Yaakov didn't Yosef, Yaakov didn't have any more children? So Chassidus says it means that ื™ื•ืกืฃ'ืก ืขื ื™ืŸ was to ืืจืืคื˜ืจืื’ืŸ ื“ืขื ืขื ื™ืŸ ืฉืœ ื™ืขืงื‘ ืื™ืŸ ืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ืจื™ืื”, ื‘ื™ื– ืื™ืŸ ืขื•ืœื ื”ื–ื” ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ. Yaakov's high ื”ืฉืคืขื•ืช came down to the world through Yosef. Why? Yaakov couldn't bring it down to the world because he was beyond. Yosef was very high ืžื“ืจื’ื” and was able to take that high madregah, but to bring it down. So in a prat in different sichot in Chassidus it says, so Yosef was higher than Yaakov. Even though his whole inyan was to bring Yaakov's inyanim, but to be able to bring down something that is very high, you've got to be even higher. Why couldn't Yaakov bring it down? Because he was very high, and low is ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืงื™ื™ืŸ ืคืืจื”ื™ื™ื–ืŸ, that it doesn't match. But if you're very high, then you have the koach to bring. A mashal always gives: if somebody is a big chacham, can't explain something to a simple person, his deep chochmah. Somebody who is even a greater chacham has the ื›ื— ืืจืืคืœืื–ืŸ, to bring down even the deepest things to a lower person. Anyway, so Yosef was able to bring down. But the bottom line is that Yosef's inyan is to be part of Mitzrayim, and whatever you have

Yaakovโ€™s Need to Remain Separate from Egypt

to be mashpia, part of Mitzrayim. Yaakov's inyan was to stay ืืคื’ืขื–ื•ื ื“ืขืจื˜ from Mitzrayim. ืื•ืŸ ื“ืขืจืคืืจ, ื”ืื˜ ื’ื•ืคื• ืฉืœ ื™ืขืงื‘ ื›ืœืœ ื ื™ืฉื˜ ื’ืขืงืขื ื˜ ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. The body couldn't stay in Mitzrayim at all. ืื•ืŸ ื ืืš ืžืขืจ, ื•ื ืฉืืชื ื™, pick me up, ื ืฉื™ืื•ืช, ืžืขื˜ ื•ื”ืขืœื™ืชื, ืฉื™ื•ืกืฃ uses a ืœืฉื•ืŸ ื•ื”ืขืœื™ืชื, when you take me out, take pick me up, which is aliyah. ื•ื ืฉืืชื ื™ is a higher level, ื ืฉื™ืื•ืช. It's mamash picking up. Get me out of Mitzrayim, pick me away from Mitzrayim, I don't want to be in Why? Because my inyan is not being in Mitzrayim. Yosef which had to accomplish within Mitzrayim, that's his shlichus, that's his job, ืคืืจืงืขืจื˜, he had to stay in Mitzrayim during the ื’ืœื•ืช ืžืฆืจื™ื, ื›ื“ื™ ื“ื™ ื–ื›ื•ืช ืฉืœ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื–ืืœ ื–ื™ืš ื’ืขืคื™ื ืขืŸ ืฆื•ื–ืืžืขืŸ ืžื™ื˜ ื™ื™ื“ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ื’ืœื•ืช ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. So Yosef, whose job is to be ืžืฉืคื™ืข ืžืฆืจื™ื, so he stayed in Mitzrayim even after he passed away. That means he was doing his job even after he passed away. His job while he was alive to be mashpia in ืžืฆืจื™ื, and that continued after he passed away by the fact that his body was in ืžืฆืจื™ื. Nar derbei, but ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื”ืฉื‘ื™ืข ืืช ืื—ื™ื•, even though ื™ื•ืกืฃ'ืก ืขื ื™ืŸ is to be in ืžืฆืจื™ื, but he made his brothers swear, ื•ื”ืขืœื™ืชื ืืช ืขืฆืžื•ืชื™ ืžื–ื”, eventually get me out of here. Even though he's supposed to be in ืžืฆืจื™ื, but what's the job in ืžืฆืจื™ื? Not to be in ืžืฆืจื™ื and stay there, to be in ืžืฆืจื™ื, work in ืžืฆืจื™ื, and have an ืขืœื™ื”. ื™ืจื™ื“ื” ืฆื•ืจืš ืขืœื™ื”, it's talking going down to ืขืœื™ื”. So what ืœืฉื•ืŸ did he say? The same ืœืฉื•ืŸ of ืขืœื™ื”, ื•ื”ืขืœื™ืชื, bring me up. ืื•ืŸ ื“ื•ืจืš ื“ืขื ื•ื•ืืก ืืจื•ืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ืื™ื– ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, since ื™ื•ืกืฃ was in ืžืฆืจื™ื and then his ืืจื•ืŸ was in ืžืฆืจื™ื, his body was there, hat dos oysgeton, that made that ื‘ืฉืขืช ืื™ื“ืŸ ื–ืขื ืขืŸ ืืจื•ื™ืก ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, when ืื™ื“ืŸ left ืžืฆืจื™ื, ืื•ืŸ ืžืขืŸ ื”ืื˜ ืžืขืœื” ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืขืฆืžื•ืช ื™ื•ืกืฃ ืขืžื”ื, and they brought out brought up the bones of ื™ื•ืกืฃ with them, ื”ืื˜ ืžืขืŸ ื“ื•ืจืš ื“ืขื ืžืขืœื” ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ื“ื™ ื ื™ืฆื•ืฆื•ืช ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉื” ื•ื•ืืก ื”ืื‘ืŸ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ื“ื™ ืขื ื™ื ื™ื ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. That helped to elevate ืžืฆืจื™ื. And the whole purpose bichlal of ืื™ื“ืŸ being in ืžืฆืจื™ื was to elevate the ื ื™ืฆื•ืฆื•ืช ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉื”, and they did. When they went out, it says bichlal there are 288 ื ื™ืฆื•ืฆื•ืช, ืจืค"ื— ื ื™ืฆื•ืฆื•ืช, and it says when they went out of ืžืฆืจื™ื, they took out 202. ื•ื’ื ืขืจื‘ ืจื‘ ืขืœื” ืืชื, so the ืืจื™ื–"ืœ says ืจื‘ is ืจ"ื‘, is 202. And that was in this ืจื›ื•ืฉ ื’ื“ื•ืœ, that was the whole job of ืื™ื“ืŸ taking up. Ha?? Yeah, but it's all from the ื›ืชื‘ื™ ืืจื™ื–"ืœ. So they took out the So they took them out of Mitzrayim. But what helped that they should accomplish their mission in Mitzrayim? Yosef. Yosef was there, when he worked with Mitzrayim, and then later he still stayed in Mitzrayim even after he passed away, his ืืจื•ืŸ was in Mitzrayim, that was maaleh it. ืื•ืŸ ื“ืืก ืื™ื– ื“ืขืจ ื˜ืขื ืคืืจ ื•ื•ืืก ื™ืขืงื‘ ื”ืื˜ ื’ืขืžืื ื˜ ืคื•ืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื ืฉื‘ื•ืขื” ืื– ื“ืขืจ ืขื ื™ืŸ ืคื•ืŸ taking him and ืžืกืคื™ื“ him ืื™ืŸ Mitzrayim. That's why Yaakov, when he spoke to Yosef, he made him swear to take him out of Mitzrayim. Why? ื”ื™ื•ืช ืื– ืžืฆื“ ื“ื™ ืขื ื™ื ื™ื ืฉืœ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื“ืืจืฃ ืื•ื™ืกืงื•ืžืขืŸ, looking from Yosef's perspective, it should have been ืื– ื™ืขืงื‘ ื–ืืœ ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ืŸ ื“ืืš ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. Just like since that's Yosef's ืขื ื™ืŸ, Yosef's ืขื ื™ืŸ is to be in Mitzrayim and to elevate Mitzrayim, so Yaakov is looking, Yosef, you're going to look at it to say adrabah, let's keep Yaakov in ืžืฆืจื™ื ื›ื“ื™ ื“ื™ ื™ืื’ ื–ื›ื•ืชื• ืขืœ ื‘ื ื™ื•. It's ืœืฉื•ืŸ HaZohar, that his zechut should protect on the children, on the Yidden, wie sie seynen in galut, as they are in ื’ืœื•ืช ืžืฆืจื™ื. So if Yaakov would stay in Mitzrayim, just like with Yosef stayed, when Yosef stayed, it ืื•ื™ืกื’ืขื˜ืืŸ, it acted in Mitzrayim, Yaakov staying, it would make even more. ื“ืขืจืคืืจ ื”ืื˜ ื™ืขืงื‘ ื’ืขื•ื•ืืœื˜ ืื– ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื–ืืœ ื“ืืก ืื•ื™ืฃ ื–ื™ืš ืื ื ืขืžืขืŸ ืžื™ื˜ ื ืฉื‘ื•ืขื” ืœืžืขืœื” ืžื˜ืขื ื•ื“ืขืช. That's why he made a shevuah. What's the ืขื ื™ืŸ of a shevuah? Shevuah is lemalah

Understanding the Purpose of a Shevuah

mitaam vadaat. Why does a person normally Why does a person swear? You swear that in case So if you understand something you have to do, we're talking about normal people. A person who is a smart person and he knows that this is He understands this is the right thing to do, he'll do it. We're not talking about bad people don't want to do the right thing. So what's a shevuah? A shevuah could be that you, when you swear, is no matter whether you understand it's right or not. Al derech like it says by a keritat brit. What's the inyan when two people make a treaty? Why do they make a To be friends! You want to be friends, be friends! Who the heck be friends? But why do you need a If you decided to be friends, what's the inyan of a So it says in Chassidus, the ืืœื˜ืข ืจื‘ื™ explains very pashut. A ื›ืจื™ืชืช ื‘ืจื™ืช is like we're making a treaty, a bris. Now we see reasons why we should be friends, but it might come a time when these reasons won't apply. So if we made a ื›ืจื™ืชืช ื‘ืจื™ืช, it's still valid, we have to be friends anyway. We have to like work together with a, it's a bris, no matter what. In other words, making a ื›ืจื™ืชืช ื‘ืจื™ืช is a, it's nogea to being ืœืžืขืœื” ืžื˜ืขื ื•ื“ืขืช. So does that mean that Yaakov was choshid that Yosef would think that he knows better than Yaakov? Yeah, m'tzad his madreigah, maybe. Maybe. Yeah. If you want to put it in simple words. You're putting it We're talking here ืขื ื™ื ื™ื ืคื ื™ืžื™ื™ื, but if you want to put Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and Yaakov knew ื™ื•ืกืฃ'ืก ืžื“ืจื’ื”, and Yaakov knew Yosef is higher. Yosef did not know He knew, but he felt We'll see, l'foal he didn't do it. L'foal he listened to his father. But his father, your children were greater than the fathers. He knew Atzilus, but Yosef's level was to bring Atzilus down. So he says, "I was supposed to take what Yaakov In other words, ื™ืขืงื‘'ืก ืขื ื™ืŸ is Atzilus. So ืžืฆื“ ืืฆื™ืœื•ืช, you stay away from Mitzrayim. But my inyan is to take that Atzilus and bring and to take Yaakov and leave him here. That's my inyan." Because it's hard to So they say the story that the Divrei Chaim once by ืฉืœืฉ ืกืขื•ื“ื•ืช started coughing very much. He couldn't stop coughing. So his son, the ืฉื™ื ืื•ื•ืขืจ, brought him a cup of tea. So he turns around to him, he says, "ื•ื•ื™ ืงื•ืžื˜ ื˜ื™ื™ ืื™ืŸ ืืฆื™ืœื•ืช?" How does tea get to, why? I mean he was mamash by ืฉืœืฉ ืกืขื•ื“ื•ืช, this is So he answers him So the Shinaver answers, "ื•ื•ื™ ืงื•ืžื˜ ื”ื•ืกื˜ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืืฆื™ืœื•ืช?" How do you cough in ื•ื•ื™ ืงื•ืžื˜ ื”ื•ืกื˜ืขืŸ? He asked him, "ื•ื•ื™ ืงื•ืžื˜ ื”ื•ืกื˜ืขืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืืฆื™ืœื•ืช?" So I think he said, "ืžื™ืœื, ืžื™ืœื ืžืŸ..." Besides this, this time he got me. And where does he say so? In the Divrei Chaim? The Divrei Chaim. So he says, so that's why he made him swear, Yosef would have kept him in Mitzrayim, that makes sense. And this is higher, ื›ื™ ื™ื“ื•ืข, says in Chassidus, a shevuah is a inyan of ื•ื•ืืก ืžืขืŸ ื“ืขืจืžื™ื˜ ื‘ื™ื ื“ื˜ ืขืจ ื–ื™ืš ืฆื• ื˜ืืŸ ื“ื™ ื–ืืš ืื•ืŸ ืื™ื™ื ืคืืจ ืœืžืขืœื” ืžื—ืฉื‘ื•ื ื•ืช. A shevuah means I'm going to do it even if there's no cheshbonos, higher than cheshbonos. Nothing should be something to hold him back from doing it. So that's why he made him swear. So now we understand, al pi peshat he made him swear pashut to make sure that he's going to do it and constantly do it. And al pi Chassidus the reason he made him swear because he wanted him to not care about his ื˜ืขื ื•ื“ืขืช why he would have a good sevara to leave him there, and do as Yaakov asked to take him out. Okay, let's, we don't, huh? We'll see, not not finished yet. ืขืก ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ื˜ ืื‘ืขืจ ื ืืš ืืœืฅ ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืžื•ืกื‘ืจ, it's still not clear. ืคืืจ ื•ื•ืืก ืื™ื– ื‘ื™ื™ ื™ืขืงื‘ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืื–ื•ื™ ืžื•ืคืจืš ืื– ืขืจ ืืœื™ื™ืŸ ื–ืืœ ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื? So why, what was it? We're saying the good sevara why he should stay in Mitzrayim, so why was it so ืืคื’ืขืคืจืขื’ื˜? Why was it so, how do you say in English ืืคื’ืขืคืจืขื’ื˜? In English, he hasn't stopped writing. Okay. Unacceptable. Okay, yeah, that's why. Why was it so unacceptable ืื– ืขืจ ืืœื™ื™ืŸ ื–ืืœ ื‘ืœื™ื™ื‘ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, that he is all right to stay in Mitzrayim? ืžื—ืžืช ื“ืืก ื”ืื˜ ื’ืขืงืขื ื˜ ืื•ื™ืคื˜ื•ืŸ ื ืขืœื™ื” ืื™ืŸ ืขื ื™ื ื™ื ืื™ืŸ ื ื™ืฆื•ืฆื•ืช ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. Since it takeh could have helped, so why takeh didn't Yaakov want it? In this ืฆื™ื™ื˜, but why didn't he want it? ื™ืฉ ืœื•ืžืจ ื”ื‘ื™ืื•ืจ ื‘ื–ื”, ืื– ื“ืขืจื™ืŸ ื“ืขื, the answer is like this: ืื™ืŸ ื—ื‘ื•ืฉ ืžืชื™ืจ ืขืฆืžื• ืžื‘ื™ืช ื”ืืกื•ืจื™ื. The din, the metziut is, a person, prisoners in jail cannot free himself. He have to have someone from outside who's free to free him. If you're in jail, whatever you're going to do is part of your problem. So you can't free yourself from jail. It's like a mashal they give: you can't pick yourself up by picking yourself up by your ears. Go like that! You have to pick yourself up by something outside of you. If you're going to pick yourself within yourself, you'll never get out of yourself. So you can't do that. That means, ืื•ืŸ ื“ืขืจื™ื‘ืขืจ ื›ื“ื™ ืื– ื™ื™ื“ืŸ ื–ื™ื™ืขื ื“ื™ื’ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, so therefore, in order for the Yidden while they're in ืžืฆืจื™ื, ื–ืืœืŸ ืงืขื ืขืŸ ืขื•ืœื” ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, that they should be able to get out of Mitzrayim, to go up beyond Mitzrayim, ืื•ืŸ ืื•ื™ืš ืžืขืœื” ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ื“ื™ ืขื ื™ื ื™ื ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, and to elevate the ืขื ื™ื ื™ื of Mitzrayim, ื“ืืจืคืŸ ื–ื™ื™ ื”ืื‘ืŸ ื ืงืฉืจ, they have to have a connection, u-vifrat bera kare'a d'avuha, a child is connected to his father, ื”ืขื›ืขืจ ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, ื”ืขื›ืขืจ ืคื•ืŸ ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืืกื•ืจื™ื. In other words, if everybody would be in Mitzrayim, there'd be a problem to get out. For as much as you work in Mitzrayim, but then you have to have a koach outside of Mitzrayim. So there has to be somebody who is outside. ืื•ืŸ ื“ืขืจืคืืจ ื™ืขืงื‘ ื’ืขื“ืืจืคื˜ ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ื”ืขื›ืขืจ ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. Yaakov had to be ื”ืขื›ืขืจ ืžืฆืจื™ื. ืื•ืŸ ื ืืš ืžืขืจ, ืขืจ ื”ืื˜ ืžืฉื‘ื™ืข ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ืขืจ ื–ืืœ ืืจื•ื™ืก ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื. He made Yosef swear to make sure that he's out of Mitzrayim. He connected Yosef, so Yosef was in Mitzrayim and tried to bring down, but Yosef in order for him accomplish, had to be connected to a level beyond. That's why he connected Yosef so that ืฆื• ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืฆื• ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื, to take him out. ืื•ืŸ ืื–ื•ื™ ื”ืื˜ ืขืจ ื’ืขืงืขื ื˜ ื ืืš ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ื‘ื ื•ื’ืข ืฆื• ืืœืข ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื“ื•ืื ื›ื™ ืืขืœืš ื’ื ืขืœื”, therefore all Yidden could come out, the aliyah from ื’ืœื•ืช ืžืฆืจื™ื, to go out. So we said before that why is there a good inyan for Yaakov to stay in Mitzrayim? To help the aliyah, by Yaakov being in Mitzrayim that will help the work in Mitzrayim and help the ื‘ื™ืจื•ืจ ื”ื ื™ืฆื•ืฆื•ืช, but it would be a problem. There would be nobody outside, so memeila, everyone is inside, you can't get out, you have to have somebody on the outside. And this is the reason why he told him to do it. So Yosef was right back to me one way, Yaakov was right the both, and what Yaakov did, he connected Yosef to him. So the she'eilah is what did Yosef, Yosef knew and Yosef wanted to do this, and Yaakov wanted that madreigah and he wanted that the madreigah of Yosef, which is being in Mitzrayim, should be connected to higher than Mitzrayim. Huh? He takeh wasn't didn't need him. He takeh wasn't at all, he stayed there, and his body stayed there. That's later, when everyone left. That's the whole point. While the Yidden are in Mitzrayim are working, you need somebody to be there to help them, their zechut to help them, and at the same time need somebody out. And then mimeila then everyone could get out, then Yaakov, then Yosef could get out, then everyone gets out, they get out, but you need both. And ืขื“ ื›ื“ื™ ื›ืš, even we wanted that Yosef's ืžื“ืจื™ื’ื” in Mitzrayim should be connected higher. So when he made Yosef swear, it's basically giving like Yosef koach. And I think in the ha'arot the Rebbe brings here, if I remember correctly, that the inyan of of a shevuah is not just stam a shevuah swearing. Shevuah is ืœืฉื•ืŸ ืฉื•ื‘ืข, ืžืฉื‘ื™ืข. You give, you me me me Satiate. What's the English word? Satiate. In ืชื ื™ื ืžืฉื‘ื™ืขื™ื ืื•ืชื•, ืชื”ื™ ืฆื“ื™ืง ื•ืืœ ืชื”ื™ ืจืฉืข, it doesn't just make a swear. ืžืฉื‘ื™ืขื™ื ืื•ืชื• the Tzemach Tzedek says, we give him koach. So

Yaakov Empowering Yosef Through a Shevuah

Yaakov gave koach to Yosef, Yosef should connect himself to that ืžื“ืจื™ื’ื” and go out. Huh? He is giving he's giving the shevuah to That shevuah, that shevuah is giving before you come down, yeah. So see, there's a question, how could you swear? Swear up there is Down here. Therefore, the answer is, it's, it's shevi'ah. Without this, could Yosef not be connected to his father through his Torah learning? Probably not in the same way. There's always more ื“ืจื’ื•ืช, and that this is deeper. With this shevuah, it makes a deeper connection. There's always a connection. He's a son, he learned with him. The fact that Yosef was at the bottom of the Nile, right? How would he still be alive? Yeah. There's a, look at ื”ืขืจื” 21: ื“ื”ื™ื™ื ื• ืฉืžื ื•ื—ืชื• ื›ื‘ื•ื“ ืฉืœ ื›"ืง ืžื•ืจื™ ื•ื—ืžื™ ืื“ืžื•"ืจ, at the Ohel of my father-in-law, ืฉืฉืžื• ื”ืจืืฉื•ืŸ ื™ื•ืกืฃ, his name is ื™ื•ืกืฃ, ื•ืขื‘ื•ื“ืชื• ื“ื•ืžื” ื‘ื›ืžื” ืคืจื˜ื™ื ืœืขื‘ื•ื“ืช ื™ื•ืกืฃ, and he was like Yosef because he also worked in bringing, bringing the vayter and being ืžืงืจื‘ ื™ื™ื“ืŸ, ื‘ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ, ื“ื•ื•ืงื, ื“ื•ื•ืงื in America. And he says, and ื“ื•ื•ืงื in ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ, see, the ื›ื“ื•ืจ is the world, and you could divide the ื›ื“ื•ืจ this way or this way. So you could divide the ื›ื“ื•ืจ from this way, so ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ Australia is in the bottom. If you divide it this way, then Europe and Israel, that side is one, it's ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืขืœื™ื•ืŸ, this is ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ. And he quotes from ืชืฉื›"ื—. ืชืฉื›"ื— there brings a maamar from the Alter Rebbe, that, and it's actually a letter, not a maamar, a letter from the Frierdiker Rebbe

Alter Rebbeโ€™s Claim of No Torah in America

to the Rebbe. And he quotes a maamar from the Alter Rebbe. The Rebbe asked him a she'eilah: ืฉืžืขืชื™, the Rebbe asked years before, in Europe: ืฉืžืขืชื™, I heard, that a vort that the Alter Rebbe said that in America is ื ื™ืฉื˜ ื’ืขื•ื•ืขืŸ ืงื™ื™ืŸ ืžืชืŸ ืชื•ืจื”. No ืžืชืŸ ืชื•ืจื” in America. Is that any truth? What does that mean? So he explains to him that the gilui of ืžืชืŸ ืชื•ืจื” was much less in ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ. Means ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ, this side of America, takeh much less. The gilui was there, and it's a harder avodah, and that's why before Mashiach, the birur... I mean, the, I heard, I guess, in a perek somewhere. It stopped now. I want, because I want to mention, I heard from ืจ' Reb Leibel Hafman a vort. So I said to, Hafman is an Alter chasid. So you thought his last name... Reb Leibel Hafman is, "If I was," he said, "I was sitting by that farbrengen that you're talking about." And it was once a farbrengen when a mekubal, he was a chasid and a mekubal, he says in Lubavitch it was once a farbrengen, and he said ืื– ืขืจ ื–ืขื˜ ืขืœ ืคื™ ืงื‘ืœื”, ืื– before ืžืฉื™ื—, ืื– ื“ื™ ืจื‘ื™ื™ื ืžื•ื–ืŸ ื–ื™ื™ืŸ ืื™ืŸ ืืžืขืจื™ืงืข. Yeah, Rabbi' Leibel Huffman. And he said, yeah, yeah, ืขืœ ืคื™ ืงื‘ืœื” you see that Moshiach, that the Rebbeim, the Rebbeim before the coming of Moshiach will have to be in America. Why? 'Cause in America ื“ืืจื˜ืŸ is the lowest ืžื“ืจื’ื”, and it has to be the dirah betachtonim. So as it gets closer to Moshiach, ืชื—ืชื•ื ื™ื have to be cleared, and that's why they came here. Because ื‘ืืžืช they wanted they they came to Rabbi' Shalom Belzer, they asked him, they asked him to come to America. That's how the story goes, I heard, that they asked him to come to America. A delegation came to him, and he said to them he wants three days to think about it. He wants three days to think about it. After three days, they came back to him, so he said, "A place where the Baal Shem Tov and his talmidim weren't there, can't come." The ืื•ื•ื™ืจ isn't... "Go to one of the ืžืชื ื’ื“ื™ืฉืข ื’ื“ื•ืœื™ื, they don't know these things! And you'll get them." So they

Ridbazโ€™s Brief Sojourn in America

went to the Ridbaz, there's on on Yerushalmi there's a ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ Ridbaz, they went to him, and he came to America. He didn't last here too long. He came here, stayed here for a year or two, then he went back. He couldn't take it, I mean, couldn't take it. But it's all because America is ื˜ืืงืข... I know, true, but there are ื“ืจื’ื•ืช. I'm sure there are ื“ืจื’ื•ืช. On Har Sinai was a bigger ื’ื™ืœื•ื™. ืžืฉื” ืžื—ื™ืฆื” ืœืขืฆืžื•, ืื”ืจืŸ ืžื—ื™ืฆื” ืœืขืฆืžื•, and everyone had different ื“ืจื’ื•ืช. As it went, this is different ื“ืจื’ื•ืช, there's different back and ื’ื™ืœื•ื™. So I'm saying, so why by Moshe more than by...? Yeah, fine, but there are there are still ื“ืจื’ื•ืช in the ื’ื™ืœื•ื™. And here was less ื’ื™ืœื•ื™. So there was less ื’ื™ืœื•ื™ here, and he had to work on it to bring. So when the Frierdiker Rebbe came to America, he came out with a whole campaign of chazering in the streets ืžืฉื ื™ื•ืช ื‘ืขืœ ืคื” for that reason. He says that America, the ืื•ื•ื™ืจ, the air is polluted. ื‘ืจื•ื—ื ื™ื•ืช, polluted. Why? ืžื™ืœื in Europe there you had thousands of years Torah was learned and mitzvot were done, so it's metaher the ืื•ื•ื™ืจ. You come to America, a new place, there was nothing done here yet. And the giluy of ืžืชืŸ ืชื•ืจื” was, that's what says there. So the Rebbe says in this ื”ืขืจื”, this father, the Frierdiker Rebbe is in America like Yosef, and his avodah is like Yosef, to be there. The Rebbe wrote to the Frierdiker Rebbe that ื”ืขืจื”? He asked him that question? Yeah, the Rebbe asked the Frierdiker Rebbe that he heard the name the name of the Alter Rebbe that there was no ืžืชืŸ ืชื•ืจื” here. So that meant not no ืžืชืŸ ืชื•ืจื”, he says that it's ื“ืจื’ื•ืช and ื’ื™ืœื•ื™ื™ื. In ื—ืฆื™ ื›ื“ื•ืจ ื”ืชื—ืชื•ืŸ has a lower ืžื“ืจื’ื” of of of ื’ื™ืœื•ื™. Anyway, let's go back and finish the sichah.

Interpreting the Word โ€˜Kolโ€™ in Prayer

it's two pshatim. When we say ื›ืœ ื”ื ืฉืžื” ืชื”ืœืœ ื™-ื”, what does that mean? All the neshamot, or the whole neshamah, and they're both true. All the neshamot, and both, and the whole neshamah. Wherever it says ื›ืœ. Be'emet, not to get into ื ื’ืœื” ืคืœืคื•ืœื™ื, there is a machloket between, between Rabbi' Natan, and the chachamim, when it says in pasuk, there is a machloket like this: if someone says ื”ื›ื” ืขืฉืจื”, ten people hit a person one after another, and the last person killed him, is the last person chayav? So one opinion says, since the pasuk says ืžื›ื” ื›ืœ ื ืคืฉ, you're only chayav if you kill the whole nefesh, but if not for the first nine, this last guy's blow wouldn't kill him, so mimela he didn't kill the whole nefesh, so he's patur, and the other de'ah says ืžื›ื” ื›ืœ ื ืคืฉ, ื›ืœ ื“ื”ื•ื ื ืคืฉ, as long as it's, you killed him, but it's a spill, so which one is it? So the she'elah is how you ื˜ืฒึทื˜ืฉ ื›ืœ, ื›ืœ means ืึทืœืข, or ื›ืœ means ื™ืขื“ืขืจ, if it's ื™ืขื“ืขืจ, if it's everyone, it means every part, so even if a part. And if you say ื›ืœ means ืึทืœืข, it means the whole nefesh, every part of the nefesh, so this is, so here he ื˜ืฒึทื˜ืฉื˜ ืœื™ืฉื•ืขืชืš ืงื•ื™ื ื• ื›ืœ ื”ื™ื•ื, a whole day, everyday we think about what, whole day we think about ืœื™ืฉื•ืขืชืš ืงื•ื™ื ื•, about, about the coming of Mashiach. As if he built the whole thing. Yeah, another guy that killed him. ืื•ืŸ ื“ืขืจ ื”ื›ืจื–ื” ืชืžื™ื“ื™ืช, and with this announcement that we always make, ืึทื– ืžืข ื”ืึธืคึฟื˜ ืื•ืŸ ืžืข ื‘ืขื˜ ื‘ืฒึทื ืื•ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืŸ ืื•ื™ืฃ ื“ื™ ื’ืื•ืœื” ื”ืฉืœื™ืžื”, we ask Hashem for the ื’ืื•ืœื”, ืคึฟื™ืจื˜ ืžืขืŸ ื–ื™ืš ืื™ืŸ ื’ืœื•ืช ืœื•ื™ื˜ ื“ืขื ืจืฆื•ืŸ ืคึฟื•ื ืขื ืื•ื™ื‘ืขืจืฉื˜ืŸ ื•ื•ืึธืก ืขืจ ื”ืึธื˜ ื’ืขืฉื™ืงื˜ ืื™ืŸ ื’ืœื•ืช. If you know that we're asking the Oibershter and we know that the Oibershter is the one that could take us out, so we're here because of Him, so we behave differently, we behave in galut the way the Oibershter wants, ืื•ืŸ ื“ืขืžืึธืœื˜ ืคึฟืขืœื˜ ื ื™ืฉื˜ ื’ืœื•ืช ืงื™ื™ืŸ ื™ืจื™ื“ื” ื—ืก ื•ืฉืœื•ื, ื•ืจื—ืžื ื ืœื™ืฆืœืŸ ื‘ืฒึท ื™ื™ึดื“ืŸ, the galut doesn't cause a Yid a ื™ืจื™ื“ื”, ืื•ืŸ ืคึฟืึทืจืงืขืจื˜, ื“ืึธืก ื‘ืขื˜ืŸ ืžืข ื–ืึธืœ ื–ืฒึทืŸ ืžืžื™ืฆืจื™ื, it's a new taytsh, not only you take us out from Mitzrayim, from Mitzrayim we get the aliyah. Al derech like there's a vort, the Gemara says So the koach of a son is still more than the father's. The best re'ayah is you have a father that's chas v'shalom blind and he has a son, the son could see. How is it possible? So the

answer is ื™ืคื” ื›ื— like that. But the she'eilah, how does it takeh? The son comes from the father, if the father doesn't have it, how does the son have it? The answer is this father has it. In his ืขืฆื ื”ื—ื™ื•ืช he has all the kochos. ื‘ื’ืœื•ื™ it doesn't come out, so the son could take it. So the taytsh is Where does the ben get this extra koach? From the father. Same thing here, ื•ื ืฉืืชื ื™ ืžืžืฆืจื™ื, ืคื•ืŸ ืžืฆืจื™ื ื’ื•ืคื we're to get ื•ื ืฉืืชื ื™ the aliyah gets up. The darkness itself, you take that darkness and you change it to light. ื‘ื™ื™ื“ืข ื“ืจื’ื•ืช, ื ืฉื ืืช ืจืืฉ ื‘ื ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ we get ื•ื ืฉืืชื ื™, and what part, the rosh gets even higher, for every yeridah an aliyah. Really, strictly you have to have the yeridah to have the aliyah? You can't have an aliyah all by itself? Only when Mashiach comes. Yeah, then there will be no more avodah. There will be aliyot without yeridot. Yeah, because there won't be avodah anymore. Tomorrow morning there's a Chassidut shiur at 6:00 AM, and it's the yahrtzeit of Steve's father, so everyone's welcome to come. Yishar koach. Yishar koach. Okay, breakfast?
