SHEMOT

Parshas Bo

The unusual halacha requiring korban Pesach to be brought inside each home, with the doorposts serving as a mizbeach, hints at the ultimate purpose behind every Jewish household.

Part of Shemot

Notes the striking halacha unique to korban Pesach — that it had to be brought inside each person's own home, with the two doorposts and the mashkof functioning as three mizbechos, unlike any other korban which requires the Beis HaMikdash or a bamah. Explains, based on the Rebbe's answer, that since Yechezkel refers to yetzias Mitzrayim as the birth of Am Yisrael, the korban Pesach hinted at the goal Hashem set from that very birth: through v'asu li mikdash v'shachanti b'socham — understood as b'soch kol echad v'echad — every Jewish home is meant to become a mikdash where the Shechinah dwells, a goal that will culminate in the third Beis HaMikdash with the coming of Mashiach.

A Korban Brought at Home: The Doorposts as Three Mizbechos

A ווארט from the רבי on this week's פרשה, פרשת בא. In פרשת בא, we learn about יציאת מצרים, about the אידן leaving מצרים. And one of the things that was connected to יציאת מצרים was the מצוה that the אויבערשטער gave them then to bring the קרבן פסח, to take a sheep and bring it as a קרבן. And the way the תורה says what they had to do is they had to שחט it, and the תוספתא says that each one had to שחט it in his own house, and then you had to sprinkle the blood on the two doorposts and on the top of the door of the entrance of the doorway, on the משקוף, two מזוזות and on the משקוף. And this is something that we do not find in any other place. There's no other place where there's a דין that you have to שחט a קרבן inside the house. בכלל, you could only bring a קרבן in the בית המקדש. There were times that you could bring a קרבן in a במה, but not the קרבן פסח. קרבן פסח couldn't be brought on a private מזבח if someone would make, on the במה קטנה. But here, the אויבערשטער wanted that the קרבן should be בדוקא made in the house, and to sprinkle the blood on the doorposts and on the משקוף of your house. And actually, the גמרא says in פסחים that we consider the two doorposts and the top as three מזבחות. Like this, in the בית המקדש, you sprinkle the blood of the קרבן on the מזבח, and here, the doorposts and the משקוף became like a מזבח, and the גמרא refers to it as three מזבחות that they had, three altars they had at that time. So it's a strange thing, why did the אויבערשטער make this special דין at that time that you have to do it in your house, and you have to make your doorposts like a מזבח, etc., etc.? Something we don't find in any other קרבן.

Dira B'tachtonim: Why Korban Pesach Set the Goal of Every Jewish Home Becoming a Mikdash

So the רבי answers it that we find in תנ״ך, in יחזקאל, that it refers to יציאת מצרים, the exodus of מצרים, as the birth of עם ישראל, the birth of the Jewish nation. Now, בכלל, when something starts off, that's when you set the tone of the goal, what you expect. So obviously, by יציאת מצרים, the אויבערשטער set the goal of what He expects from עם ישראל. And that was hinted in the קרבן פסח that was the מצוה that they did in connection to יציאת מצרים. The goal of what the אויבערשטער wants of עם ישראל is, as we know חסידות brings the מדרש, נתאוה הקדוש ברוך הוא להיות לו יתברך דירה בתחתונים. השם wanted a dwelling place for Himself in this world. And what חסידות explains that this doesn't only mean He wanted a place like the בית המקדש where the שכינה will rest, He wanted that every Jewish home should be like a בית המקדש. And therefore, when the אויבערשטער gave the מצוה of making the בית המקדש and משכן, He said, ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכם, \"Make for Me a מקדש, and I will dwell amongst them.\" And the question is, should have said, \"I will dwell in it.\" And the answer חז״ל give is בתוך כל אחד ואחד. He didn't mean only I should dwell in this building in the בית המקדש, I should dwell in every single איד, בתוך כל אחד ואחד. That means that the goal of what the אויבערשטער wants from עם ישראל is that every person should make his home into a place where the שכינה dwells, like the בית המקדש. And that תכלית, that goal that the אויבערשטער set for the אידן, is what He hinted in the מצוה of the קרבן פסח, which is connected to the birth of עם ישראל. He said, \"Bring a קרבן in your house, שחט it in your house, let it be a קרבן in your house. Let your house become the מזבח, let your house become the בית המקדש.\" And by doing that, you will show that that you understand that the goal for all future years, future generations is that every person has to make his house, his own home, into a בית המקדש, a holy place where the שכינה rests. And that is why the אויבערשטער gave that special מצוה, and this is the lesson that we take from פרשת בא, from the bringing of the קרבן פסח, that every אידישע home has to be a place where the שכינה rests. And if every איד is מקיים that מצוה, that his home is a place where the שכינה rests, all these homes will get together, and it'll actually bring down that the big building, the בית המקדש, where the שכינה rests mainly, will be back to us through the coming of משיח בקרוב ממש.
