Rebbe’s Vort on Parshas Devarim’s Blessing

from the Rebbe on this week's פרשה, פרשת דברים. In פרשת דברים, Moshe Rabbeinu gives the Yidden a bracha, and he says, השם אלקי אבותיכם יוסף עליכם ככם אלף פעמים, Hashem, the God of your fathers, will add to you, as much as you are now he will add a thousand times, ויברך אתכם כאשר דיבר לכם, and he will bless you like he said to you to them. And Rashi explains that what does it mean ויברך אתכם כאשר דיבר לכם? Moshe said Hashem should give you a thousand times as much, and then he added and he will bless you like כאשר דיבר לכם. So Rashi says that this is what the Yidden did. After Moshe Rabbeinu said Hashem is going to give you a thousand times as much, they said to him, משה, אתה נותן קצבה לברכותינו? You're giving a limit to our brachot? Didn't the Eibershter promise us that he will give us not a thousand times as much, he'll give us bli gvul, without a limit? אמר להם, so Moshe answered them, זו משלי היא, the thousand times as much, the bracha I gave you, that's my bracha. אבל הוא יברך אתכם כאשר דיבר לכם, but the Eibershter will give us the bracha like he said, which is the bracha of אין קצבה, בלי קצבה, without a limit. And the

Why Moshe Presented the Blessing in Two Steps

Rebbe asks the she'eilah, why did Moshe Rabbeinu do it in such a way? First he said his own bracha, and then the Yidden asked him didn't Hashem give us another bracha, and after they asked him, he says yes, Hashem will give you. Why didn't he lechatchilah say to them, I am giving you my bracha, and that is a thousand times as much, and the Eibershter will give you much more? What was the reason that he said first his way, had the Yidden ask what about the Eibershter's bracha, and then Moshe Rabbeinu answered them yes, that this is mine and the Eibershter will give you his bracha which is even more? And the Rebbe explains, this is based on the whole concept of tefillah. Some ask, why is there a mitzvah to daven? We know one of the mitzvot is to daven, and the nekudah of the mitzvah, the point of the mitzvah is that whenever someone has something that he needs, he must daven to the Oibershter and ask for it. But one might ask, the Oibershter knows everything, so the Oibershter knows what I need, why do I have to ask for it? Nevertheless we see here that the Oibershter wants us to ask, which is like the Chazal say in מדרש, הקדוש ברוך הוא מתאוה לתפילתן של ישראל, the Oibershter desires the tefillah of the Yidden. There's another pasuk in איוב, למעשה ידיך תכסוף, השם desires, longs for your behalf, for your ma'aseh yadayim, which means the Oibershter wants us to do something about it. The Oibershter is ready to give us, but he wants us to ask for it. That's why there's a mitzvah of tefillah, we have to ask for it. The same thing happened here. Moshe Rabbeinu, had he told them that this is my berachah and the Oibershter give you his berachah, then they wouldn't have asked for it. Moshe said it in such a way that they should have to ask for it. He said in a way that he gave the berachah of elef pe'amim expecting them to ask, and they did, to ask but the Oibershter promised us a bigger berachah, and he would answer yes, you will get that bigger berachah. In other words, in order to get that bigger berachah that the Oibershter wants to give, you need to ask for it. And that's the סדר בכלל. And as the Rebbe said many times, this is why it's very important to ask for the coming of Mashiach, even though the Oibershter knows that we need Mashiach, etc. etc., nevertheless the Oibershter wants us to ask for it. And when we ask for it and we say to the Oibershter that we want Mashiach now and we're asking for it, that's the way that'll bring that the Oibershter will bring Mashiach. We find that בנוגע in חומש בנוגע פסח שני, that when the Oibershter said to bring the קרבן פסח in the מדבר, some people came and asked that they were טמא, they can't bring the קרבן, they were asking why should we miss out, and the Oibershter said yes, you'll get a second chance. There's lichora the same question there too. The Oibershter could lechatchila give in the mitzvah of Pesach and then say that those that can't should bring קרבן פסח שני, because the Oibershter wants that we should ask for it. And after we ask for it, then the Oibershter gives us. So the same thing here also. Moshe Rabbeinu said it in a way that the Yidden should ask, and that shows that everything that we need we have to ask, and lefoal mamash, especially when it's connected to the three weeks and nine days when we're waiting for Moshiach, we have to ask the אויבערשטער מיט אן אמת, ask the Oibershter that we want Moshiach, and then the Oibershter will bring משיח במהרה בימינו בקרוב ממש.
