Jewish Audio on Chabad.org. Today's 砖讬注讜专 will be in 诪住讻转 住讜讟讛 讚祝 讻"讗. We will start from the seventh line from the top of 注诪讜讚 讗'. And here the 讙诪专讗 goes back to explain the 诪砖谞讛. It mentioned in the 诪砖谞讛, that 讜讬砖 讝讻讜转 转讜诇讛 讙' 砖谞讬诐 讜讻讜诇讬. That sometimes the effect of the water on the 住讜讟讛 is suspended for three years because of a 讝讻讜转. If the woman has a 讝讻讜转, a special merit, it suspends the punishment, and it could even suspend it for three years. So the 讙诪专讗 asks, 讝讻讜转 讚诪讗讬? The merit of what? What kind of 讝讻讜转 are we talking about? 讗讬诇讬诪讗 讝讻讜转 讚转讜专讛, if you're going to say the 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛, that if she studied 转讜专讛, so the 讝讻讜转 of her studying 转讜专讛 would suspend the effect of the water. But the 讙诪专讗 says that couldn't be because 讛讗 讗讬谞讛 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛 讛讬讗, she is not commanded and she does. We know that the reward for doing a 诪爪讜讛 if you are commanded to do it is greater than the reward you get for doing a 诪爪讜讛 if you're not commanded. And this woman, since she is not commanded to study 转讜专讛, as 专砖"讬 quotes the 驻住讜拽 where it says, 讜诇诪讚转诐 讗讜转诐 讗转 讘谞讬讻诐, you should teach them, meaning the 转讜专讛, to your sons, and the 讙诪专讗 讚专砖'谞住 讜诇讗 讗转 讘谞讜转讬讻诐, not to your daughters. So, women are not obligated to learn 转讜专讛. So if a woman does learn 转讜专讛, she's only doing it as an 讗讬谞讜 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, as one that is not commanded and keeps. The reward for that is not so great. So, therefore, it is hard to say that the 讝讻讜转 of her learning 转讜专讛 should be that strong that it should have a 讻讞, the power to suspend the effect of the water for a long time, up to three years. 讗诇讗, so therefore you must say, 讝讻讜转 讚诪爪讜讛, the 讝讻讜转 of her doing 诪爪讜转. That if she does the 诪爪讜转, that 讝讻讜转 will suspend the effect of the water for three years. But the 讙诪专讗 asks, 讝讻讜转 讚诪爪讜讛 诪讬 诪讙谞讗 讻讜诇讬 讛讗讬? Does the 讝讻讜转 of the 诪爪讜讛 protect for that long? 讜讛转谞讬讗, we've learned in a 讘专讬讬转讗, 讗转 讝讜 讚专砖 专讘讬 诪谞讞诐 讘专讘讬 讬讜住讬. This is what 专讘讬 诪谞讞诐 讘专讘讬 讬讜住讬 讚专砖'谞讚, what he taught. He

Candle and Light Analogy Explained

explained the 驻住讜拽 in 诪砖诇讬 讜'. It says, 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专. That a 诪爪讜讛 is like a candle and the 转讜专讛 is like light. So we see that the 转讜专讛 is 转诇讛 讛讻转讜讘 讗转 讛诪爪讜讛 讘谞专, the 转讜专讛 connects a 诪爪讜讛 with a candle. 讜讗转 讛转讜专讛 讘讗讜专, and the 转讜专讛 with light. To teach us that what? 讗转 讛诪爪讜讛 讘谞专, the reason a 诪爪讜讛 is compared to a candle, 诇讜诪专 诇讱, to tell you, 诪讛 谞专 讗讬谞讜 诪讙讬谞讛 讗诇讗 诇驻讬 砖注讛, just like a candle only protects only temporarily, or the other 讙讬专住讗 is, that 诪讛 谞专 讗讬谞讜 诪讗讬专讛 讗诇讗 诇驻讬 砖注讛, just like a candle only shines temporarily. 讗祝 诪爪讜讛 讗讬谞讛 诪讙讬谞讛 讗诇讗 诇驻讬 砖注讛. A 诪爪讜讛, too, only protects temporarily. 讜讗转 讛转讜专讛 讘讗讜专, the reason we compare the 转讜专讛 to light, 诇讜诪专 诇讱, to tell us tell you, 诪讛 讗讜专 诪讙讬谉 诇注讜诇诐, or 诪讗讬专 诇注讜诇诐, just like light protects forever, or shines forever, 讗祝 转讜专讛 诪讙讬谞讛 诇注讜诇诐, so does 转讜专讛 protect forever in a permanent way. 讜讗讜诪专, there's another 驻住讜拽 which is also in 诪砖诇讬, just a 驻住讜拽 before the previous 驻住讜拽 of 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专, and that 驻住讜拽 also tells us that the 转讜专讛 protects forever. The 驻住讜拽 says, 讘讛转讛诇讻讱 转谞讞讛 讗讜转讱 讜讙讜诪专. The whole 驻住讜拽 is, 讘讛转讛诇讻讱 转谞讞讛 讗讜转讱, which means, when you will go, it will lead you, 讘砖讻讘讱 转砖诪讜专 注诇讬讱, when you will lay down, it'll watch over you, 讜讛拽讬爪讜转 讛讬讗 转砖讬讞讱, and when you wake up, that will be your talk, it will talk to you. So he 讚专砖'谞住 this 驻住讜拽, 讘讛转讛诇讻讱 转谞讞讛 讗讜转讱, when you will go, it will lead you, 讝讛 讛注讜诇诐 讛讝讛, that's in this world. That if you learn 转讜专讛, it will lead you in this world. 讘砖讻讘讱 转砖诪讜专 注诇讬讱, when you will lay down, it'll watch over you, 讝讜 诪讬转讛, that's after you die. 讜讛拽讬爪讜转 讛讬讗 转砖讬讞讱, and when you wake up this will be your talk, that is 诇注转讬讚 诇讘讗, that is for the future in the world to come. So, we see here, too, that the 转讜专讛 doesn't only protect temporarily, but it protects forever in a permanent way. And he says,

Parable of the Torch in the Dark

诪砖诇 诇讗讚诐, an example, a parable of a person, 砖讛讬讛 诪讛诇讱 讘讗讬砖讜谉 诇讬诇讛, that he was walking in the darkness of the night, 讜讗驻讬诇讛, and it was dark. 讜诪转讬讬专讗 诪谉 讛拽讜爪讬诐, and he was afraid from the thorns, 讜诪谉 讛驻讞转讬诐, and from the pits, 讜诪谉 讛讘专拽谞讬诐, and from the thistles, 讜诪谉 讞讬讛 专注讛, and from wild animals, 讜诪谉 讛诇讬住讟讬诐, and from robbers, and also 讜讗讬谞讜 讬讜讚注 讘讗讬讝讛 讚专讱 诪讛诇讱, and he doesn't know on which road he is going. 谞讝讚诪谞讛 诇讜 讗讘讜拽讛 砖诇 讗讜专, if he got a torch of light, so that causes that 谞讬爪诇 诪谉 讛拽讜爪讬诐 讜诪谉 讛驻讞转讬诐 讜诪谉 讛讘专拽谞讬诐, that now he is saved and protected from the thorns, from the pits, and from the thistles. But 讜注讚讬讬谉 诪转讬讬专讗 诪谉 讞讬讛 专注讛 讜诪谉 讛诇讬住讟讬诐, but he's still afraid of the wild animals and from the robbers, 讜讗讬谞讜 讬讜讚注 讘讗讬讝讛 讚专讱 诪讛诇讱, and he still doesn't know which way he is going, because even though he has a torch, so now he will see not to fall into a pit and not to get hurt by the thorns, but still this will not save him from the robbers and from the wild animals. And this will also not tell him on which road he is going. 讻讬讜谉 砖注诇讛 注诪讜讚 讛砖讞专, as soon as the morning star went out, which means it gets light, 谞讬爪诇 诪谉 讞讬讛 专注讛 讜诪谉 讛诇讬住讟讬诐, so now he's also saved from the wild animals and from the robbers. And as 专砖"讬 says, because the wild animals and the robbers only go during the night, as there is a 驻住讜拽 that says, 转砖转 讞讜砖讱 讜讬讛讬 诇讬诇讛 讘讜 转专诪讜砖 讻诇 讞讬转讜 讬注专, that when it's dark, that's when all the wild animals and also the robbers come crawling, could attack you. But when it gets light, then you are saved from the wild animals and from the robbers. But 讜注讚讬讬谉 讗讬谞讜 讬讜讚注 讘讗讬讝讛 讚专讱 诪讛诇讱, but still he does not know on which way he goes. 讛讙讬注 诇驻专砖转 讚专讻讬诐, when he comes to the fork in the road and you realize which road you're on, then 谞讬爪诇 诪讻讜诇诐, at that point, you are saved from them all. And this is a 诪砖诇 for the 诪爪讜转 and the 转讜专讛 as we said before. 诪爪讜转 are compared to a candle. So it is also compared to a torch, which is similar to a candle. So when it says in the 诪砖诇, that when you're going in the street and you're are not protected from anything, when you get the torch you are at least protected from falling into a pit and you're protected from being hurt by thorns, that is a 诪砖诇 to 诪爪讜转. That when you do 诪爪讜转, it protects you partially. But still it says you are not protected 100% from the robbers and from the wild animals, which means that even though you have 诪爪讜转, you're still not sure that you will not sin later on, and you are not sure that you will not be punished later on. And therefore it continues, that when it becomes light, and that means when you have the 转讜专讛, because 转讜专讛 is compared to light as we said before, 转讜专讛 讗讜专, then you're also protected from the wild animals and from the robbers. Which means that when you learn 转讜专讛, then you have a greater 讝讻讜转, and you're also protected from doing 注讘讬专讜转, and 诪诪讬诇讗 you are also protected from being punished. But still it says you are not 100% protected, you still don't know on which road you're going, which mean that even though you learn 转讜专讛, you're still not sure, maybe the 讬爪专 讛专注 will overcome you, your evil inclination will overcome you. But then when you come to the fork in the road and you realize where you're going, then you are 100% protected. Now what that fork in the road is, the 讙诪专讗 will explain later on, but one of the 驻砖讟讬诐 is 讝讛 讬讜诐 讛诪讬转讛, which means the day of death, that if a person continues to do the 诪爪讜转 and study 转讜专讛 up to the day that he dies, and he dies while he is still a 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐, then he knows that he is protected from all. But in the meantime, we see from here that the 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛 is much greater than the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜转. So the 拽砖讬讗 is, how could we say before that the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜转 is great enough that it could suspend the effect on the water on the 住讜讟讛? And then we continue more, all to show that the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜转 are not that great. 讚讘专 讗讞专, another 驻砖讟, another explanation in this 驻住讜拽 that we said before: 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专, that a 诪爪讜讛 is compared to a candle, and the 转讜专讛 is compared to light, because 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 诪爪讜讛, an 注讘讬专讛 could extinguish a 诪爪讜讛, which means an 注讘讬专讛 could extinguish the 砖讻专 of a 诪爪讜讛. If a person did a 诪爪讜讛 and he's supposed to get rewarded for it, if he later on does an 注讘讬专讛, that could extinguish the 砖讻专 he is supposed to get for the 诪爪讜讛. But 讜讗讬谉 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 转讜专讛, but an 注讘讬专讛 cannot extinguish the 砖讻专 he's supposed to get for 转讜专讛, for learning 转讜专讛. And that is the 驻砖讟 in the 驻住讜拽, 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专. Just like you could extinguish a candle, you could extinguish the 诪爪讜讛. And just like you cannot extinguish the light of the day, you cannot extinguish the 砖讻专 you're supposed to get for 转讜专讛. 砖谞讗诪专, and he quotes a 驻住讜拽, a 专讗讬讛 that you cannot extinguish the 砖讻专 you're supposed to get for 转讜专讛, because it says 诪讬诐 专讘讬诐 诇讗 讬讜讻诇讜 诇讻讘讜转 讗转 讛讗讛讘讛, that many waters cannot extinguish the 讗讛讘讛, the love. Now this love refers to 转讜专讛. As 专砖"讬 says, there's a 驻住讜拽 in 砖讬专 讛砖讬专讬诐 that says 讜讚讙诇讜 注诇讬 讗讛讘讛, and that refers to 转讜专讛. So what we're saying here is that nothing could extinguish the love, which means the 转讜专讛. And that's why 转讜专讛 is compared to the light. Just like you can't extinguish the light, you cannot extinguish the 砖讻专 of 转讜专讛. But in the meantime we see from here that the 砖讻专 of 转讜专讛 is very great, And the 讙诪专讗 answers 讗诪专 专讘 讬讜住祝, 专讘 讬讜住祝 said that even though the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜讜转 is not as great as the 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛, nevertheless it still has the power of suspending the effect of the water because the difference between 转讜专讛 and 诪爪讜讜转 is that 诪爪讜讛 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚注住讬拽 讘讛 诪讙谞讗 讜诪爪诇讗. 诪爪讜讜转, at the time when you're involved in doing the 诪爪讜讜转, it protects you from punishment, as 专砖状讬 explains, and it also saves you from the 讬爪专 讛专注, not to continue doing 注讘讬专讜转. 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚诇讗 注住讬拽 讘讛, at the time when you are not involved in doing the 诪爪讜讜转, afterwards, so then 讗讙讜谞讬 诪讙谞讗, it still has the power of protecting from the punishment, 讗讘诇 讗爪讜诇讬 诇讗 诪爪诇讗, it does not save the person from the 讬爪专 讛专注. But

Difference Between Commandment and Torah Protection

转讜专讛, 讘讬谉 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚注住讬拽 讘讛 讘讬谉 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚诇讗 注住讬拽 讘讛, whether it is the time while he's involved in learning 转讜专讛 or at the time when he's not involved in learning 转讜专讛, he already finished learning his 转讜专讛, 诪讙谞讗 讜诪爪诇讗, it has the power of protecting from the punishment and also saves you from the 讬爪专 讛专注. So we see that even though 诪爪讜讜转 are not as great as 转讜专讛, but nevertheless, it does have the power of protecting from 讬住讜专讬诐, from punishment, and therefore by the 住讜讟讛 too, the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜讜转 has the 讻讞 of suspending the effect of the water. 讚讜讗讙 and 讗讞讬转讜驻诇, did they not learn 转讜专讛? 讗诪讗讬 诇讗 讛讙讬谞讛 注诇讬讬讛讜? Why didn't it protect them? And really the 讙诪专讗 here does not mean protect, the 讙诪专讗 means here to save them from the 讬爪专 讛专注. That since they learned 转讜专讛, and we said before that if you study 转讜专讛, so while you study or afterwards while you're not studying 转讜专讛, it has the power of protecting from the 讬住讜专讬诐, from the punishment, and it also has the power always of saving the person from the 讬爪专 讛专注. So why didn't the 转讜专讛 that they learned save them from the 讬爪专 讛专注? And really what happened to them, they became 专砖注讬诐. They turned away from doing the 诪爪讜讜转 and they started doing 注讘讬专讜转, they became 专砖注讬诐. So why didn't the 转讜专讛 that they studied save them from following their 讬爪专 讛专注? 讗诇讗 讗诪专 专讘讗, so therefore 专讘讗 said the 驻砖讟 is different. 转讜专讛 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚注住讬拽 讘讛 诪讙谞讗 讜诪爪诇讗. 转讜专讛, while you're studying the 转讜专讛, it protects you from the punishment and saves you from the 讬爪专 讛专注. 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚诇讗 注住讬拽 讘讛, at the time when you're not studying it, 讗讙讜谞讬 诪讙谞讗, it protects from the punishment, 讗爪讜诇讬 诇讗 诪爪诇讗, but it doesn't save from the 讬爪专 讛专注. And 诪爪讜讛, 讘讬谉 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚注住讬拽 讘讛 讘讬谉 讘注讬讚谞讗 讚诇讗 注住讬拽 讘讛, whether you're involved in doing the 诪爪讜讛 or while you're not involved in doing the 诪爪讜讛, but afterwards, 讗讙讜谞讬 诪讙谞讗, it does protect the person from the 讬住讜专讬诐, from the punishment, 讗讘诇 讗爪讜诇讬 诇讗 诪爪诇讗, but it doesn't save from the 讬爪专 讛专注. And this is the difference between 转讜专讛 and 诪爪讜讜转, not as the difference was mentioned before. And according to this difference, we do understand why 讚讜讗讙 讜讗讞讬转讜驻诇, even though they learned 转讜专讛, were not saved from the 讬爪专 讛专注, because we said before that even if you study 转讜专讛, not while you are studying 转讜专讛, not during that time, it does not have the 讻讞 of saving a person from the 讬爪专 讛专注. And therefore, even though they studied 转讜专讛, but since later on it was after they studied the 转讜专讛, they were not able to be saved from the 讬爪专 讛专注 and therefore they became 专砖注讬诐. But concerning the 转讬专讜抓 that we wanted to give on the 拽砖讬讗 of this 讙诪专讗, that how can the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜讜转 suspend the effect of the water on the 住讜讟讛, the 转讬专讜抓 still remains that since 诪爪讜讜转 also have the power of protecting a person from punishment, so therefore the 讝讻讜转 of the 诪爪讜讜转 that this woman did could suspend the effect of the water.

Ravina鈥檚 View on Shared Reward

专讘讬谞讗 讗诪专, 专讘讬谞讗 comes to answer the question in a different way. The question we asked before, that what kind of 讝讻讜转 does the 诪砖谞讛 refer to when it says that if she has a 讝讻讜转, it suspends the effect of the water? But he says 诇注讜诇诐 讝讻讜转 转讜专讛, that really it means the 讝讻讜转 of her studying 转讜专讛. 讜讚拽讗诪专转, ah, you said 讗讬谞讛 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, that she does it not being commanded, so the reward for that is not that great, so therefore how can that 讝讻讜转 be enough to suspend the effect of the water? So he answers 谞讛讬 讚驻拽讜讚讬 诇讗 诪讬驻拽讬讚讗, true is that she was not commanded to study 转讜专讛 herself, but still, 讘讗讙专讗, in the reward, 讚诪拽专讬谉 讜诪诪转谞谉 讘谞讬讬讛讜, that they make sure that their sons study 转讜专讛, they study 诪拽专讗, which is the 讞讜诪砖, and they study 诪砖谞讛, which is the 诪砖谞讬讜转, and also 讜谞讟专讬谉 诇讛讜 诇讙讘专讬讛讜 注讚 讚讗转讜 诪讘讬 诪讚专砖讗, and they also wait for their husbands till they come from the 讘讬转 诪讚专砖, till they come from the 讬砖讬讘讛, because in those times they would be far away and it would take a long time until they would come back, and they would wait for their husbands to return, so because of that 砖讻专, 诪讬 诪讬 诇讗 驻诇讙谉 讘讛讚讬讬讛讜? Don't they share the reward that their husband gets? And since the studying 转讜专讛 of their husbands and of their children is 诪爪讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, they are commanded to do it, so their reward is great. And since she gets a share in their reward, so she also has a reward of a 诪爪讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, of somebody who was commanded and does the 诪爪讜讛. And therefore, the 讝讻讜转 that she has from helping her husband and her children learn 转讜专讛, that 讝讻讜转 is strong enough to suspend the effect of the water, because that is a 讝讻讜转 not of somebody who is an 讗讬谞讜 诪爪讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, of somebody who does something not being commanded, but that is a 讝讻讜转 and a reward of somebody who is commanded, because the husband and the children are commanded, so she gets part of their reward as if she was commanded too. Then the 讙诪专讗 goes back to explain the 讘专讬讬转讗 we brought before. We said before in the 诪砖诇 that when is the person protected 100%? After he reaches the 驻专砖转 讚专讻讬诐, after he reaches the fork in the road. The 讙诪专讗 asks,

What Is the Fork in the Road?

诪讗讬 驻专砖转 讚专讻讬诐? What do we mean in the 谞诪砖诇, when we use the 诪砖诇 of a 驻专砖转 讚专讻讬诐, of him reaching the fork in the road? 讗诪专 专讘 讞住讚讗, so 专讘 讞住讚讗 said, 讝讛 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 讜讬讜诐 诪讬转讛, that refers to a 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 and the day of his death. Which means that the day of his death comes and he still remains a 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐, he still remains a person who studies the 转讜专讛. So when you reach that point and you still continue studying 转讜专讛, then you are protected 100% that you're free from all problems. 专讘 谞讞诪谉 讘专 讬爪讞拽 讗诪专, so 专讘 谞讞诪谉 讘专 讬爪讞拽 says, 讝讛 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 讜讬专讗转 讞讟讗, that is a person who is a 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 and reaches the level of 讬专讗转 讞讟讗, of being afraid of doing 注讘讬专讜转, which means a real 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐. So after a person does 诪爪讜讜转, and also studies 转讜专讛, and that causes him to become a 讬专讗 讞讟讗, that he is afraid of 注讘讬专讜转, he's a real 讬专讗 砖诪讬诐, then he is protected from all. Because since he learned 转讜专讛, he knows what is right and what is wrong, what you're allowed to do and what you're not allowed to do, he is also a 讬专讗 讞讟讗, and that prevents him from listening to his 讬爪专 讛专注, so when he reaches that level, then we are sure that he is protected from all. 诪专 讝讜讟专讗 讗诪专, 诪专 讝讜讟专讗 says, 讝讛 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 讚住诇拽讗 诇讬讛 砖诪注转讗 讗诇讬讘讗 讚讛讬诇讻转讗, that refers to a 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 that is able to say a 讚讬谉 according to the 讛诇讻讛. And that is a special 讝讻讜转, because it's possible for a person to learn 转讜专讛 and 驻住拽谉 a 讚讬谉 and not happen to 驻住拽谉 according to the 讛诇讻讛. And to have this 讻讞 to 驻住拽谉 according to 讛讬诇讻转讗, according to the 讛诇讻讛, that is a special 讻讞. When a person reaches that 诪讚专讙讛, that level, then he knows he's protected from all. And as 专砖状讬 explains exactly how this fits to the 诪砖诇, in the 诪砖诇 it was that even when the light came out, and he was protected from the animals and from the robbers, he still does not know on which way he is going, so here too, after he learns 转讜专讛, he's still not sure he's going on the right track. He's still not sure that what he is going to say will be accepted by his friends, by the other 转诇诪讬讚讬 讞讻诪讬诐, he is not sure that he will 驻住拽谉 according to the 讛诇讻讛. But when he is 讝讜讻讛 that he 驻住拽谞'住 according to the 讛诇讻讛 and his 讞讘专讬诐 accept his words, then he knows that he is protected from all. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, we had mentioned before 讚讘专 讗讞专 that there's another 驻砖讟 in the 驻住讜拽: 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专, that 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 诪爪讜讛, an 注讘讬专讛 could extinguish the 砖讻专 of a 诪爪讜讛, 讜讗讬谉 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 转讜专讛, but an 注讘讬专讛 cannot extinguish the 砖讻专 that you get for learning 转讜专讛. 讗诪专 专讘 讬讜住祝, so 专讘 讬讜住祝 said, 讚专砖讬讛 专讘 谞讞诪谉 讘专 讬讜住祝 诇讛讗讬 拽专讗 讻住讬谞讬, 专讘 谞讞诪谉 讘专 讬讜住祝 讚专砖'谞讚, explained this 驻住讜拽 like it was given from 住讬谞讬, that's how well he explained it. And this refers to the 驻住讜拽: 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专. And this refers to the 讚专砖 that the 讙诪专讗 is going to say soon, which is actually the same 讚专砖 as we just said before, that 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 诪爪讜讛 讜讗讬谉 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 转讜专讛. 讜讗诇诪诇讬 讚专砖讜讛 讚讜讗讙 讜讗讞讬转讜驻诇 讛讻讬, if 讚讜讗讙 讜讗讞讬转讜驻诇 would have 讚专砖'谞讚 the 驻住讜拽 the same way, 诇讗 专讚驻讜 讘转专 讚讜讚, they wouldn't have chased after 讚讜讚. God, has forsaken him, etc. And the end of the 驻住讜拽 is: 专讚驻讜 讜转驻砖讜 讻讬 讗讬谉 诪爪讬诇. They said: 讛砖诐 has forsaken 讚讜讚, so therefore, 专讚驻讜, you could chase him, 讜转驻砖讜, you could catch him, 讻讬 讗讬谉 诪爪讬诇, there will be nothing that will save him. Because they thought that since 讚讜讚 讛诪诇讱 did the 注讘讬专讛 with 讘转 砖讘注, which an 注讘讬专讛, which was an 注讘讬专讛 of 注专讬讜转, an 注讘讬专讛 of immorality, so they thought therefore he lost his 讝讻讜转讬诐 and they would be able to catch him. 诪讗讬 讚专讜砖? What did they 讚专砖'谉? Where did they take it from? Because the 转讜专讛 says, a 驻住讜拽 in 讚讘专讬诐, it says: 讜诇讗 讬专讗讛 讘讱 注专讜转 讚讘专 讚讘专 讜讙讜诪专, 讛砖诐 said there should be not seen any immoral thing with you, and etcetera. The end of the 驻住讜拽 is 讜砖讘 诪讗讞专讬讱, so he should turn away from you. In other words, if 讛砖诐 sees something immoral with a person, he turns away from him. So they said, since 讚讜讚 讛诪诇讱 did something immoral with 讘转 砖讘注, therefore 讛砖诐 turned away from him and he lost his 讝讻讜转讬诐, and they were therefore they were able to chase him. 讜讛谉 讗讬谞谉 讬讜讚注讬诐, but they did not know, 砖注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 诪爪讜讛, that an 注讘讬专讛 could extinguish the 砖讻专 of a 诪爪讜讛, but 讜讗讬谉 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 转讜专讛, but an 注讘讬专讛 cannot extinguish the 砖讻专 of 转讜专讛. And therefore, since 讚讜讚 讛诪诇讱 had the 砖讻专 of 转讜专讛, therefore, they couldn't catch him because he had the 砖讻专 of 转讜专讛 that would be 诪讙讬谉, that would protect him. And this is what 专讘讬 讬讜住祝 said, that this is the 讚专砖 that 专讘 诪谞讞诐 讘专 讬讜住讬 said, that he 讚专砖'谞讚 this 讚专砖 that 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 诪爪讜讛 讜讗讬谉 注讘讬专讛 诪讻讘讛 转讜专讛, he 讚专砖'谞讚 it from the 驻住讜拽 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专, as we said before, that a 诪爪讜讛 is compared to a candle, you could extinguish a candle, but 转讜专讛 is compared to light that cannot be extinguished. So if they would have 讚专砖'谞讚 the 驻住讜拽 the same way as 专讘 诪谞讞诐 讘专 讬讜住讬, they would not have chased after 讚讜讚, because they would have realized that the 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛 was able to protect 讚讜讚 even though he did the 注讘讬专讛 according to their opinion. Then the 讙诪专讗

The Warning of 讘讜讝 讬讘讜讝讜 诇讜 and Its Lesson

continues: 诪讗讬 讘讜讝 讬讘讜讝讜 诇讜? What does the 驻住讜拽 mean when it says, 讘讜讝 讬讘讜讝讜 诇讜? This is the end of the 驻住讜拽 that was quoted before, the 驻住讜拽 of 诪讬诐 专讘讬诐 诇讗 讬讜讻诇讜 诇讻讘讜转 讗转 讛讗讛讘讛, that many waters cannot extinguish the love, and as we said before, it means that nothing can extinguish the 转讜专讛, and the end of that 驻住讜拽 is, 讗诐 讬转谉 讗讬砖 讗转 讻诇 讛讜谉 讘讬转讜 讘讗讛讘讛 讘讜讝 讬讘讜讝讜 诇讜. If anybody will give away all his money in trade for that 讗讛讘讛, for that love, he will be embarrassed. People will embarrass him. People will ridicule him for doing such a thing. But the 讙诪专讗 asks: What does that mean that a person should not give anything away for that love, which means for the 转讜专讛? 讗诪专 注讜诇讗, so 注讜诇讗 explained it: 诇讗 讻砖诪注讜谉 讗讞讬 注讝专讬讛, it shouldn't be like 砖诪注讜谉, the brother of 注讝专讬讛, 讜诇讗 讻专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉 讚讘讬 谞砖讬讗讛, and you shouldn't be like 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉 of the house of the 谞砖讬讗, of the prince, 讗诇讗, but you should be 讻讛诇诇 讜砖讘谞讗, like 讛诇诇 and 砖讘谞讗. The story of 砖诪注讜谉 讗讞讬 注讝专讬讛 was that 砖诪注讜谉 and 注讝专讬讛 were two brothers. 砖诪注讜谉 studied 转讜专讛, and he was supported by his brother 注讝专讬讛 who did business. But because of that, 注讝专讬讛 got a share of the 砖讻专 that 砖诪注讜谉 got for his learning 转讜专讛. And the same was with 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉 and the house of the 谞砖讬讗. 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉 studied 转讜专讛, and the house of the 谞砖讬讗, of 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 讛谞砖讬讗, supported 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉. And therefore the 讘讬 谞砖讬讗讛 got a share in the 砖讻专 of the 转讜专讛 of 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉. But, so the 讙诪专讗 says here that you shouldn't be that way, but you should be like 讛诇诇 讜砖讘谞讗. What is the case of 讛诇诇 讜砖讘谞讗? 诇住讜祝 讗诪专 诇讬讛, at the end, 砖讘谞讗 said to his brother 讛诇诇, 转讗 谞注专讜讘, come let's make a deal, 讜谞驻诇讜讙, and let's divide it, let's split. In other words, let me support you, and I will get a share in your learning 转讜专讛. 讬爪转讛 讘转 拽讜诇 讜讗诪专讛, came out a 讘转 拽讜诇, a voice from Heaven, and said, 讗诐 讬转谉 讗讬砖 讗转 讻诇 讛讜谉 讘讬转讜 讜讙讜诪专, if a person will give all the money in the world in trade for the 讗讛讘讛, for the love, for the 转讜专讛, the 驻住讜拽 finishes off, 讘讜讝 讬讘讜讝讜 诇讜, he will be ridiculed, he will be insulted, he will be embarrassed. And that's what the 驻住讜拽 means, that a person should not give away his share in 转讜专讛 to others who will support him, but should rather recognize the greatness of the 砖讻专 of 转讜专讛, and learn 转讜专讛 in poverty if he has to. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues to explain the 诪砖谞讛. It said in the

Gemara Debate: Teaching Torah to One鈥檚 Daughter

诪砖谞讛, 讗讜诪专 讘谉 注讝讗讬, 讘谉 注讝讗讬 said, 讞讬讬讘 讗讚诐 诇诇诪讚 讗转 讜讻讜诇讜, a person is supposed to teach his daughter 转讜专讛. How could you have a 讛讜讛 讗诪讬谞讗 even to say that by teaching 转讜专讛 you're teaching her immorality? How could you call 转讜专讛, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, immorality? The 讙诪专讗 answers: 讗诇讗 讗讬诪讗, therefore say, 讻讗讬诇讜 诇讬诪讚讛 转驻诇讜转. It's as if he taught her immorality. 讗诪专 专讘讬 讗讘讛讜, so 专讘讬 讗讘讛讜 said, 诪讗讬 讟注诪讗 讚专讘讬 讗诇注讝专? What is the reason of 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专? Why did 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专 feel that if you teach your daughter 转讜专讛, it's as if you teach her immorality? 讚讻转讬讘, because there's a 驻住讜拽 that says, and this is in 诪砖诇讬, 诪砖诇讬, 拽驻讬讟诇 讞' 驻住讜拽 讬"讘, it says, 讗谞讬 讞讻诪讛 砖讻谞转讬 注专诪讛. I, 讞讻诪讛, I, wisdom, was laying sly. And wisdom refers to the 转讜专讛. So what he's saying here is that this 讞讻诪讛, the 转讜专讛, has to do with being sly. And this means that 讻讬 诪砖谞讻谞住讛 讞讻诪讛 讘讗讚诐, as soon as 讞讻诪讛 转讜专讛 enters the person, 谞讻谞住讛 注诪讜 注专诪讜诪讬转. So a certain slyness enters into the person. Since when you learn 转讜专讛, your mind gets sharpened because there's a lot of wisdom in the 转讜专讛, so that brings a characteristic of slyness into the person's mind. And therefore we're afraid that if a woman is going to learn 转讜专讛, that will make her sly, and she will use that in the wrong direction, that she will do things hiddenly, and people will not know what she's doing, because she will become sly. And the 讙诪专讗 asks, 讜专讘谞谉, and those 专讘谞谉 who argue against 专讘讬 讗诇讬注讝专, and they do not hold that if you teach your daughter 转讜专讛 it's as if you're teaching her immorality, 讛讗讬 讗谞讬 讞讻诪讛 诪讗讬 注讘讚讬 诇讬讛, what do they do with this 驻住讜拽 讗谞讬 讞讻诪讛? Isn't there a clear 驻住讜拽 that says that 讞讻诪讛 causes a person to become sly? And the 讙诪专讗 answers, 诪讬讘注讬 诇讬讛 诇讻讚讚专讘讬 讬讜住讬 讘专讘讬 讞谞讬谞讗, they need it for the 讚专砖 as 专讘讬 讬讜住讬 讘专讘讬 讞谞讬谞讗 讚专砖谞'讟.

Interpretation of 注专诪讛: Nakedness and Humility

The 转讜专讛 does not exist only by a person who stands, so to speak, as if unclothed because of them. He 讚专砖谞'讟 that the word 注专诪讛 here does not come from the word 注专讜诐 which means sly, but it comes from the word 注专讜诐 which means naked. And what the 驻住讜拽 is saying is that if a person wants to have the 转讜专讛, which means he wants the 转讜专讛 to stay with him, he has to learn the 转讜专讛 similar as if it would be unclothed. And as 专砖"讬 explains that means that he should unclothe himself from all other businesses. And even if he has to be poor, he should stay poor and learn 转讜专讛 that way without any other involvement. 砖谞讗诪专, as the 驻住讜拽 says, 讗谞讬 讞讻诪讛 砖讻谞转讬 注专诪讛, that I, 讞讻诪讛, am laying naked, which means that in order to stay 讞讻诪讛, to have 讞讻诪讛, you have to be unclothed of all other matters but of your learning 转讜专讛. And the 讙诪专讗 continues, 讗诪专 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉 said, 讗讬谉 讚讘专讬 转讜专讛 诪转拽讬讬诪讬谉, the words of 转讜专讛 cannot stay, 讗诇讗 讘诪讬 砖诪砖讬诐 注爪诪讜 讻诪讬 砖讗讬谞讜, only by a person who makes himself as if he doesn't exist. A person who is not arrogant, a person who is not a 讘注诇 讙讗讜讛, a person who is very humble, and he considers himself as if he is nothing. 砖谞讗诪专, as the 驻住讜拽 says, and this is a 驻住讜拽 in 讗讬讜讘, 拽驻讬讟诇 讻"讞, 讜讛讞讻诪讛 诪讗讬谉 转诪爪讗, that 讞讻诪讛 will be found from nothing. And he 讚专砖谞'讟 it that when can 讞讻诪讛 be found by a person? Only if he is nothing, if he considers himself as if he is nothing. Then the 讙诪专讗 goes back to explain the 诪砖谞讛 further. But in the

Mishnah on a Woman鈥檚 Preference for Modest Wealth

诪砖谞讛, 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 讗讜诪专, 专讜爪讛 讗砖讛 讜讻讜', in the 诪砖谞讛 it said that 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 said a woman wants a 拽讘 and 转驻诇讜转, which means she wants a small amount and 转驻诇讜转, and sexual indulgence, 诪转砖注讛 拽讘讬诐 讜驻专讬砖讜转, better than nine 拽讘讬诐 and separation. But the 讙诪专讗 asks, 诪讗讬 拽讗诪专, what is 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 saying? What does that mean that she wants a 拽讘 and she wants 转驻诇讜转? The 讙诪专讗 answers, 讛讻讬 拽讗诪专, this is what he means to say, 专讜爪讛 讗砖讛 讘拽讘 讜转驻诇讜转 注诪讜, 诪转砖注讛 拽讘讬诐 讜驻专讬砖讜转, that a woman would rather have a small amount of money, her husband should not give her much money, but he will give her 转驻诇讜转, he will be with her more often, rather than having 转砖注讛 拽讘讬诐, having nine 拽讘讬诐, which means a lot of money, and he would give her a lot of things, but he would have to be separated from her, there would have to be 驻专讬砖讜转. And as we explained when we learned in the 诪砖谞讛, as 专砖"讬 explains, that it means that since the 讚讬谉 is that when a person's work, a person's job is far away from his house, his 注讜谞讛, which means the amount of time he has to spend with his wife, is not as often as somebody whose job is close to home. So a woman would rather want that her husband should earn less money, but would be more often with her, rather than him having to earn a lot of money, but he would be far away from her, and the 注讜谞讛, the time when they would spend together, would not be so often. And this is what 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 meant to say, that therefore a person should not teach his daughter 转讜专讛, because since it is the nature of a woman that she really wants this concept of 转驻诇讜转, and therefore, if you will teach her 转讜专讛, this will help her to utilize the 注专诪讜诪讬转, the slyness that she gets from the 转讜专讛 for the 注谞讬谉 of 转驻诇讜转, and therefore it is not right to teach your daughter 转讜专讛. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues to explain the 诪砖谞讛. In

The Pious Fool (讞住讬讚 砖讜讟讛) and False Piety

the 诪砖谞讛 it said, 讛讜讗 讛讬讛 讗讜诪专, 讞住讬讚 砖讜讟讛 讜讻讜'. Said in the 诪砖谞讛 that he used to say a 讞住讬讚 砖讜讟讛, a 讞住讬讚, a pious person who is a fool, 讜专砖注 注专讜诐, a sly 专砖注, a sly, wicked person, 讜讗砖讛 驻专讜砖讛, a woman who shows that she is a 驻专讜砖讛, that she is very mean a 讞住讬讚 砖讜讟讛, a fool, a pious person, 讻讙讜谉, for instance, 讚拽讗 讟讘注讗 讗讬转转讗 讘谞讛专讗, a woman is drowning in the river, 讜讗诪专, and he says, 诇讗讜 讗讜专讞 讗专注讗, it is not fit, 诇讗讬住转讻讜诇讬 讘讛, that I should look at her, 讜讗爪讜诇讛, and I should save her. So he will not save her because it's a woman. So here we have a person who seems to be a 讞住讬讚, he is trying to show that he is pious, he doesn't want to look at a woman, but really he is a 砖讜讟讛 because because of that he's not saving her life. Or another example given in 转讜住驻讜转 from the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 that if he sees a child that's drowning in the river and he says, "Let me first take off my 转驻讬诇讬谉, then I will jump in to save the child." By the time he takes off his 转驻讬诇讬谉, the child could die already. In a case like that, you shouldn't wait to take off your 转驻讬诇讬谉, you should jump into the water with your 转驻讬诇讬谉. But if he does that, he seems to be a 讞住讬讚, but the truth is he is a 讞住讬讚 砖讜讟讛. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 讛讬讻讬 讚诪讬 专砖注 注专讜诐? What is a 专砖注 注专讜诐, a sly, wicked person? 讗诪专 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, and 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉 said, 讝讛 讛诪讟注讬诐 讚讘专讬讜 诇讚讬讬谉 拽讜讚诐 砖讬讘讜讗 讘注诇 讚讬谉 讞讘讬专讜, that if a person comes to the judge and tells him his case, his side, before his friend, the 讘注诇 讚讬谉, the one that he has this 讚讬谉 转讜专讛 with, comes and says his part. So he is a 专砖注 because he is going against the 讚讬谉, you're not allowed to do that, because the 驻住讜拽 says 诇讗 转砖讗 砖诪注 砖讜讗, as 专砖"讬 brings, and he is also sly because by doing that, the 讚讬讬谉 who hears his side first, automatically his mind works for the benefit of this person, and later it's hard for him to also see the other side equally as he sees this side. So he is a 专砖注 and he is a sly 专砖注, he's trying to get the 讚讬讬谉 to 驻住拽谉 the 讚讬谉 so that it should be for his benefit. 专' 讗讘讛讜 讗讜诪专, 专' 讗讘讛讜 says, 讝讛 讛谞讜转谉 讚讬谞专 诇注谞讬, that if a person gives a 讚讬谞专, a small coin, to a poor man, 诇讛砖诇讬诐 诇讜 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, in order to have that poor man complete his 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, his 200 讝讜讝. The 讚讬谉 is that a person who doesn't own 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝 is considered an 注谞讬, is considered a poor person. But as soon as he has 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, he loses his status of being an 注谞讬. And 讚转谞谉, we learn in the 诪砖谞讛, 诪讬 砖讬砖 诇讜 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, someone who has 200 讝讜讝, 诇讗 讬讟讜诇, is not allowed to take 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, 讜驻讗讛, 讜诪注砖专 注谞讬. These are the different things that you're supposed to give to a poor man. 诇拽讟 is when you cut your field, you cut the wheat, those single wheat that falls down, you're supposed to leave them for the poor man to collect them. 砖讻讞讛 means if you forget a bundle of wheat in the field, you're not allowed to return to take it, you're supposed to leave it for the poor man. 驻讗讛 is when you cut your field, you're supposed to leave the corner uncut, and that goes for the poor people. 诪注砖专 注谞讬 is a tenth of your crop that you're supposed to give to the poor people on every third year of 砖诪讬讟讛 and every sixth year of 砖诪讬讟讛. Who is considered a poor man that is able to collect 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, or 驻讗讛, or 诪注砖专 注谞讬? A person who does not have 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, does not own 200 讝讜讝. 讛讬讜 诇讜 诪讗转讬讬诐 讞住专 讚讬谞专, if he has with one 讚讬谞专 less than 200, he's still considered an 注谞讬, 讜讗驻讬诇讜 讗诇祝 谞讜转谞讬谉 诇讜 讻讗讞转, even if a thousand people would give them all their 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, 驻讗讛, 诪注砖专 注谞讬 all together at the same time, 讛专讬 讝讛 讬讟讜诇, he is allowed to take it. If one person gives him one 讚讬谞专, and through that one 讚讬谞专 now he owns 200 讝讜讝, he's not allowed to take anymore because now he's not an 注谞讬 anymore. But if before he has the 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, together at the same time they give him even 1,000 讝讜讝, or whatever it may be, he's allowed to take it all. Because as long as it's given at the same time, we cannot say that he is already an 注砖讬专, he is already rich when he took it. And what this person is doing, when he sees this 注谞讬 who has with one 讚讬谞专 less than 诪讗转讬讬诐 讝讜讝, and he's able to collect 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, 驻讗讛, 诪注砖专 注谞讬, but he wants to spoil it for him, because he has his own relatives who are poor people and they want to collect that 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, 驻讗讛, 诪注砖专 注谞讬, what he would do is he would go over to this 注谞讬, give him one 讚讬谞专, and that completes him to 200 讝讜讝, and now he's not allowed to take any more 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, 驻讗讛, and his relatives will come and take it. That person is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐. He's doing something slyly because 注诇 驻讬 讚讬谉 he didn't go against the 转讜专讛, because he only gave him a 讚讬谞专 of 爪讚拽讛 and he's allowed to do that, but on the other hand, he's considered a 专砖注 because through that he spoiled him from collecting all that money, all that 诇拽讟, 砖讻讞讛, 驻讗讛, 诪注砖专 注谞讬 that he could have collected. 专讘 讗住讬 讗诪专 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, 专讘 讗住讬 said in the name of 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, and who is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐? 讝讛 讛诪砖讬讗 注爪讛 诇诪讻讜专 讘谞讻住讬诐 诪讜注讟讬诐, that if a person advises somebody to sell when he has only a small amount of 谞讻住讬诐. And this refers to a case of a person who passed away, and his his children inherit from him his estate. The 讚讬谉 is that if there's a lot of 谞讻住讬诐, there's a big estate, then we divide the estate. Part of it goes as an inheritance to the sons, and part of it goes for the upkeep, for the support of the daughters, because the 讚讬谉 is that after a person passes away, his daughters are supposed to be supported from his estate. So if there is a lot of money, a lot of property to the estate, then they inherit some, and some goes for the support of the daughters. If there are 谞讻住讬诐 诪讜注讟讬诐, if there is not a big estate, there is only a small estate, so the first ones that take is the daughters. So whatever is supposed to go for the support of the daughters goes for that. If there is nothing left for the sons to inherit, we say, too bad, let them go and collect money, let them go and beg. So if a person advises somebody who only has 谞讻住讬诐 诪讜注讟讬诐, only a little bit of 谞讻住讬诐 are leftover, and he advises him to sell it, what does he do? He causes the daughters not to have any estate from where to collect their support. And 讗诪专 专讘 讗住讬 讗诪专 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, because 专讘 讗住讬 said in the name of 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, 讬转讜诪讬诐 砖拽讚诪讜 讜诪讻专讜 讘谞讻住讬诐 诪讜注讟讬诐, if the 讬转讜诪讬诐 went along and they sold their 谞讻住讬诐 诪讜注讟讬诐, if it was a small estate and they sold it, 诪讛 砖诪讻专讜 诪讻专讜, the sale is valid, and therefore, the daughters will not have from where to collect the support. So if a person advises the 讬转讜诪讬诐, the orphans who inherited the 谞讻住讬诐 诪讜注讟讬诐, to sell it, since the sale is valid, that means that he is spoiling the daughters from getting their support. A person like that who gives that advice is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 讗讘讬讬 讗诪专, 讗讘讬讬 said, 讝讛 讛诪砖讬讗 注爪讛 诇诪讻讜专 讘谞讻住讬诐 讻专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, that's a person who advises somebody to sell his property in the case as 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 had 驻住拽'谞讚 a 讚讬谉. What was the case of 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇? 讚转谞讬讗, we learned, 谞讻住讬 诇讱, if someone gives property to somebody and he says to him, my property should be given to you, 讜讗讞专讬讱 诇驻诇讜谞讬, and after you're finished with it, it should go to somebody else. 讜讬专讚 讛专讗砖讜谉 讜诪讻专, and the first person went along and he sold that property, 讜讗讻诇, and he ate up, he used up the money that he got for that property, so now the second person has nothing to collect. 讛砖谞讬 诪讜爪讬讗 诪讬讚 讛诇拽讜讞讜转, so the second person who was supposed to get the property after the first one is able to go to the buyer, the one that bought the property from the first person, and take it away from him, because the original person had said that after the first one is finished with it, it should go to the second. So even though he sold it to somebody else, the second person is able to take it away from the buyer. 讚讘专讬 专讘讬, that is the opinion of 专讘讬. But 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 讗讜诪专, 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 says, 讗讬谉 诇砖谞讬 讗诇讗 诪讛 砖砖讬讬专 专讗砖讜谉, the second one has nothing but what the first one left. But whatever the first one sold and now doesn't have the money that he received for the sale, the second person cannot collect. In other words, the second person loses, he cannot go to the 诇拽讜讞讜转, to the buyer, and take away the field. So according to 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, if a person would advise the first person who received the property and tell him, go ahead and sell your property, that person is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐. He caused through his advice, the second person who was awaiting to receive the property after the first one would be finished, loses. And this is only according to 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇. According to 专讘讬, he doesn't lose anything, because he could go along to the buyer and take it away from the buyer. But according to 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, he loses. So according to 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, the person who advises him to do this is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐. 专讘 讬讜住祝 讘专 讞诪讗 讗诪专 专讘 砖砖转, 专讘 讬讜住祝 讘专 讞诪讗 said in the name of 专讘 砖砖转 that who is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐? 讝讛 讛诪讻专讬注 讗讞专讬诐 讘讚专讻讬讜, a person who is a hypocrite, but he tries to tell others to follow his ways. And the reason for that is because he wants them to think he's a big 爪讚讬拽, and really hiddenly, he does many wrong things. 专讘 讝专讬拽讗 讗诪专 专讘 讛讜谞讗, 专讘 讝专讬拽讗 said in the name of 专讘 讛讜谞讗, 讝讛 讛诪讬拽诇 诇注爪诪讜 讜诪讞诪讬专 诇讗讞专讬诐, that's a person who is lenient for himself. When it comes to 驻住拽'谉 a 讚讬谉 for himself, he is very lenient, but when it comes to 驻住拽'谉 for others, there he is very strict. A person like that is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐. 注讜诇讗 讗诪专, 注讜诇讗 said, who is a 专砖注 注专讜诐? 讝讛 砖拽专讗 讜砖谞讛, a person who learned 诪拽专讗 and learned 诪砖谞讛, he learned 讞讜诪砖, 转讜专讛, and he learned 诪砖谞讛, 讗讘诇 讜诇讗 砖讬诪砖 转诇诪讬讚讬 讞讻诪讬诐, he didn't serve, he didn't attend to 转诇诪讬讚讬 讞讻诪讬诐. In other words, he didn't go to 转诇诪讬讚讬 讞讻诪讬诐 to learn the reasons behind the 讚讬谞讬诐 that are mentioned in the 诪砖谞讬讜转. And that person is called a 专砖注, because if he just knows the 诪砖谞讬讜转 and doesn't know the reasons behind the 诪砖谞讬讜转, he will 驻住拽'谉 a 讚讬谉 falsely, because you have to know the reasons in the 讚讬谉 of the 诪砖谞讛 in order to know when you could compare certain cases to that 讚讬谉, when you cannot compare. So sometimes, if you do not know the reasons, you'll 驻住拽谉 something which is 讟诪讗, you will 驻住拽谉 it's 讟讛讜专. Something which is 讟讛讜专, you'll 驻住拽谉 讟诪讗. Sometimes a person should be 讝讻讗讬, should be right, you will 驻住拽谉 he is 讞讬讬讘, he is wrong. When he has to be 讞讬讬讘, you will 驻住拽谉 he is 讝讻讗讬. Or something which is 讗住讜专, forbidden, you will 驻住拽谉 it's 诪讜转专. Something that's 诪讜转专, you will 驻住拽谉 that it's 讗住讜专. So therefore, a person, even though he is 讘拽讬 in 诪拽专讗 and 诪砖谞讛, he knows a lot of 驻住讜拽讬诐 and he knows a lot of 诪砖谞讬讜转, but since he does not know the reasons for the 诪砖谞讬讜转, he is considered a 专砖注 注专讜诐. Concerning what we learned earlier in the 砖讬注讜专, that the 讙诪专讗 brings the 驻住讜拽, 讻讬 谞专 诪爪讜讛 讜转讜专讛 讗讜专, that a 诪爪讜讛 is compared to a candle and 转讜专讛 is compared to light. And the 讙诪专讗 says that just like a candle only lasts temporary, the same way a 诪爪讜讛 is only 诪讙讬谉 诇驻讬 砖注讛, only protects temporarily, but 转讜专讛 is compared to light, and just like a light is forever, so the 转讜专讛 is forever, too. There is no time limit to the 讝讻讜转, to the protection of 转讜专讛. So the 爪诪讞 爪讚拽, in his 住驻专 讗讜专 讛转讜专讛, in his 驻讬专讜砖 注诇 诪砖诇讬, he explains the reason why the 讝讻讜转 of 诪爪讜转 are only temporary, in other words, they're limited with time, while the 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛 is not limited to time. And he says that the difference is based on the general difference between 转讜专讛 and 诪爪讜转. 转讜专讛 is not limited to time, while 诪爪讜转 is done with objects which are under the control of time and space. 转讜专讛 means that we have to study, and in our minds, we have to understand the 讞讻诪讛 of 讛砖诐, the wisdom of 讛砖诐. So in order to learn 转讜专讛, we do not get involved with physical objects, with objects of the creation. Even though when we study 转讜专讛, we're learning about physical objects, but the 转讜专讛 itself is something that's in a person's mind, and is not something that is done with a physical object. 诪爪讜转, the only way we could do 诪爪讜转 is if we take actually physical objects, things of the creation, and we do the 诪爪讜转 with

Physical Objects in Mitzvot vs Timeless Torah

them. For instance, if you put on 转驻讬诇讬谉, the only way we could fulfill that 诪爪讜讛 is by taking a physical piece of leather that is made according to the 讛诇讻讜转 of 转驻讬诇讬谉, and with that, we fulfill the 诪爪讜讛. Or when we give 爪讚拽讛, we have to take a physical coin, and give that coin to an 注谞讬, and that's how we fulfill the 诪爪讜讛 of 爪讚拽讛. And the same applies to most of the 诪爪讜转, that they're connected to physical objects. The whole creation is divided into two parts of time and space. So any physical object which is part of the creation is limited to time, and also to space, but in our case, what's important is the fact that it's limited to time. So since the way we perform the 诪爪讜转 is through things which are limited to time, therefore the 讝讻讜转 that we get from 诪爪讜转 are also limited to time. But 转讜专讛, since the way we learn 转讜专讛 is not through physical objects, it is that in our minds we understand the wisdom of 讛砖诐 that explains concerning the 诪爪讜转 of physical objects, but the 转讜专讛 itself is not something physical. The 转讜专讛 is not something which is under the control of time, and also not of space. So therefore, the 讝讻讜转 that we get from learning 转讜专讛 is also beyond time. It is something which is 诇注讜诇诐, forever, and is not temporary, not under the limit of time. And the 诇讬讜讘讗讜讜讬讟砖注专 专讘讬 砖诇讬讟"讗, in his 住驻专 诇拽讜讟讬 砖讬讞讜转, in 驻专砖转 讜讗转讞谞谉, goes further and says that based on this idea, we see that even though the 讙诪专讗 tries to bring out a 诪注诇讛 in 转讜专讛 over 诪爪讜转, nevertheless, this itself shows a 诪注诇讛 in 诪爪讜转 over 转讜专讛. That even though concerning the 讝讻讜转 of how long the 讝讻讜转 will last, 转讜专讛 is greater, but nevertheless, there is something special in 诪爪讜讛 that we do not have in 转讜专讛. Since 转讜专讛 is not done with a physical object, therefore 转讜专讛 does not have that characteristic of changing over a physical object into a spiritual being. Because 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 we're not dealing with physical objects. While when we do a 诪爪讜讛, we have this 讻讞 of changing over the physical object into a spiritual being. When we take a piece of leather, and we make a 诪爪讜讛 out of it, we use it for 转驻讬诇讬谉, then we take this physical object of 转驻讬诇讬谉, of leather, and this becomes a spiritual thing, this becomes the 诪爪讜讛 of 转驻讬诇讬谉. So the concept of changing the physical world to become a spiritual place, which is really the whole reason why 讛砖诐 created the world, he wanted us, 讬讬讚谉, through our actions, to elevate the world to a higher 诪讚专讙讛. In other words, to take the physical world as it is, and bring spirituality into it. So that is done more through 诪爪讜转 than it is done through 转讜专讛. And this is

Mitzvot as Candle, Torah as Light

another reason he says why 诪爪讜转 are compared to a candle, and 转讜专讛 is compared to light. Just like light does not change anything over into light, it is just light in itself, the same way the 转讜专讛 is the 讞讻诪讛 of 讛砖诐, and when we study the 转讜专讛, we fulfill the great 诪爪讜讛 of studying 转讜专讛, but nevertheless, we do not accomplish this concept of changing over something of the physical world into a spiritual being. But 诪爪讜转 are compared to a candle, because just like a candle, the way we get the fire, the light of the candle, is by burning the candle, in other words, it's changed, the physical part of the candle is transformed into fire and is transformed into light, the same is with a 诪爪讜讛. The 诪爪讜讛 has the power of changing over a physical object into the spiritual light, into 专讜讞谞讬讜转, into spirituality. And according to this, 诪爪讜转 have a 诪注诇讛 over 转讜专讛. But it has nothing to do with what the 讙诪专讗 says here, because the 讙诪专讗 here is trying to bring out the 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛. The 讝讻讜转 of 转讜专讛 lasts longer because 转讜专讛 is beyond the world. It is beyond time. And therefore the 讝讻讜转 is also beyond time, while 诪爪讜转 is connected to the physical world, therefore it is limited to time. But on the other hand, this itself brings out a 诪注诇讛 in 诪爪讜转 over 转讜专讛. In another place in 诇拽讜讟讬 砖讬讞讜转, the 诇讬讜讘讗讜讜讬讟砖注专 专讘讬 砖诇讬讟"讗 continues to explain the next piece of the 讙诪专讗 here. The

Woman鈥檚 Reward for Assisting Husband鈥檚 Torah Study

讙诪专讗 here brings the 讚讬谉 that when a woman helps her children learn 转讜专讛, and she waits for her husband until he comes home from the 讘讬转 诪讚专砖, and that enables him to learn 转讜专讛, she shares in his 砖讻专. And we see from the 讙诪专讗 here that when she shares in his 砖讻专, her 砖讻专 is the 砖讻专 of a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, the 砖讻专 of somebody who was commanded and keeps the 诪爪讜转. Because 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 when the 讙诪专讗 mentioned that she herself learned 转讜专讛, the 讙诪专讗 says that 砖讻专 is not strong enough, because it's a 砖讻专 of 讗讬谞讜 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, the reward of somebody who is not commanded and does. And therefore, when the 讙诪专讗 answers that she gets the 砖讻专 for helping her children and waiting for her husband, here she gets the 砖讻专 of a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛. And the question is, why should she get the 砖讻专 as if she was commanded and learned 转讜专讛 when really she was not commanded? All she did was help her husband in learning 转讜专讛. So why should she share in the 砖讻专? If we would say that she also gets a reward, but not necessarily the reward of learning 转讜专讛, we would understand, because she does a good thing helping somebody else to do a good deed, so she gets a reward for doing something good. But with the 讙诪专讗 here says she gets the reward of 转讜专讛, as if she studied 转讜专讛, and as if she studied it in the form of being a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, being commanded to do it. Now the question is, why do we consider her as if she studied 转讜专讛 in the form of being commanded to do it, when all she did was she helped her husband learn 转讜专讛, or she helped the children learn 转讜专讛? And he answers it based on the famous 专"谉. In the

Rav Natan on Doing a Mitzvah Personally

beginning of the second 驻专拽 of 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉, there is a famous 专"谉. The 讙诪专讗 says there that when it says in the 诪砖谞讛 that 讛讗讬砖 诪拽讚砖 讘讜 讜讘砖诇讜讞讜 and 讜讛讗砖讛 诪转拽讚砖转 讘讛 讜讘砖诇讜讞讛, a man is able to be 诪拽讚砖 a woman or himself or through a 砖诇讬讞. A woman is able to receive 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 or herself or through a 砖诇讬讞. And the 讙诪专讗 asked, why did the 诪砖谞讛 have to tell us that? If it would say just that a man is able to be 诪拽讚砖 through a 砖诇讬讞, we would know for ourselves, for sure he could do it himself. Why does the 诪砖谞讛 have to tell us clearly that he could do it himself? And the 讙诪专讗 answers to tell us that 诪爪讜讛 讘讜 讬讜转专 诪讘砖诇讜讞讜, there's a bigger 诪爪讜讛 if he does it himself than if he sends it through a 砖诇讬讞. And the same thing the 讙诪专讗 says considering the woman. Why does the 诪砖谞讛 have to tell us that she herself could take the 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉? If her 砖诇讬讞 could take it for her, certainly she could take it herself. And the 讙诪专讗 gives the same answer, that the 诪砖谞讛 wants to teach us 诪爪讜讛 讘讛 讬讜转专 诪讘砖诇讜讞讛, there's a bigger 诪爪讜讛 if she accepts the 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 herself than if she sent a 砖诇讬讞 to accept it. So the 专"谉 asks a 拽讜砖讬讗, how could the 诪砖谞讛 say that she has a greater 诪爪讜讛 if she does it herself, if 讘讻诇诇 a woman has no 诪爪讜讛 in 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉? The 诪爪讜讛 of marriage, which is really the fulfillment of the 诪爪讜讛 of 驻专讜 讜专讘讜, of having children, is only on the man and not the woman, because there is a 诪砖谞讛 in 讬讘诪讜转 that says 讛讗讬砖 诪爪讜讜讛 注诇 驻专讬讛 讜专讘讬讛, a man is commanded to fulfill the 诪爪讜讛 of multiplying and being fruitful, but 讗讬谉 讛讗砖讛 诪爪讜讜讛 注诇 驻专讬讛 讜专讘讬讛, a woman is not commanded to fulfill this 诪爪讜讛 of 驻专讬讛 讜专讘讬讛. So a woman is 讘讻诇诇 not obligated to keep the 诪爪讜讛 of 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉. So how can the 诪砖谞讛 say that a woman has a greater 诪爪讜讛 if she gets the 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 herself than her 砖诇讬讞, if 讘讻诇诇 she has no 诪爪讜讛? And the 专"谉 answers that because she is 诪住讬讬注 诇讘注诇讛, since she helps her husband, so then she also has a 诪爪讜讛. Which kind of 诪爪讜讛? The 诪爪讜讛 of 驻专讬讛 讜专讘讬讛. So we see from this 专"谉 the concept that if one person has to do a 诪爪讜讛, and he does the 诪爪讜讛 by the help of somebody else, so that somebody else gets a share in that 诪爪讜讛, and that somebody else is considered as if he is a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, as if he's commanded to do it. That's why we call it 诪爪讜讛, the 专"谉 calls it that she has a 诪爪讜讛, and the 讙诪专讗 refers to it as a 诪爪讜讛, 诪爪讜讛 讘讜 讬讜转专 诪讘砖诇讜讞讜, that she has a greater 诪爪讜讛 she does it herself. So we see the 讙诪专讗 refers to it as a 诪爪讜讛, and that is because she helps her husband fulfill his 诪爪讜讛. And therefore, here too, when she helps her husband who is commanded to learn 转讜专讛, or she helps her children who are commanded to learn 转讜专讛, so she is as if she was commanded to learn 转讜专讛, and it's as if she fulfilled the 诪爪讜讛 of learning 转讜专讛 in a form of being a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛. And he continues by saying that we see that this is generally the, the 砖讬讟讛 of the 专诪讘状诐. Because we

Rambam on Child鈥檚 Obligation to Learn Torah

see that the 专诪讘状诐 驻住拽谞'讟 in 讛诇讻讜转 转诇诪讜讚 转讜专讛, that when a child was not taught by his father, 讞讬讬讘 诇诇诪讚 讗转 注爪诪讜 讻砖讬讻讬专. He's supposed to learn himself when he recognizes. And the 爪诪讞 爪讚拽 is 诪讚讬讬拽, that the 专诪讘状诐 here does not say that he is obligated to learn 转讜专讛 when he becomes a 讙讚讜诇, 讻砖讬讙讚讬诇, but he says 讻砖讬讻讬专, when he recognizes means while he's still a 拽讟谉. And the question is, where do we find such a thing as a child being obligated to do any 诪爪讜讛? So how could the 专诪讘状诐 say that while he's still a child, he's obligated to learn 转讜专讛? And he answers, that really the obligation is on the father. The father is obligated to teach his child while he's still a 拽讟谉, 转讜专讛. But since the way the father is able to fulfill this 诪爪讜讛 is by the child participating in it, because the way he could do the 诪爪讜讛 is by teaching the child, so the child has to do his part in the 诪爪讜讛 of the father, so automatically the child becomes a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛. And therefore, if the father did not teach him, he has to teach himself. So we see the same 住讘专讗 here in this 专诪讘状诐. And the 诇讬讜讘讗讜讜讬讟砖注专 专讘讬 answers another 专诪讘状诐 based on this 住讘专讗. We

Rambam on Second Passover Exemption for Children

find a 专诪讘状诐 in 讛诇讻讜转 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, that the 专诪讘状诐 says that a 讙专 砖谞转讙讬讬专, a 讙讜讬 who converted, or a 拽讟谉 砖讛讙讚讬诇, or a child who became an adult, who became 讘专 诪爪讜讛, between 驻住讞 专讗砖讜谉 and 驻住讞 砖谞讬, is 讞讬讬讘 in 驻住讞 砖谞讬, has to bring the second 驻住讞, because he did not fulfill his 诪爪讜讛 of 拽专讘谉 驻住讞. But the 专诪讘状诐 says, if while he was a 拽讟谉 still, his father brought for him, combined him in his 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, then he is 驻讟讜专 from bringing 驻住讞 砖谞讬. And the 讻住祝 诪砖谞讛 asks: How can that 驻讟讜专 the child? Since when the father combined, included the child in his 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, he was still a 拽讟谉, so how can that free him from his 讞讬讜讘 later on as a 讙讚讜诇? And he quotes the, the 专"讬 拽讜专拽讜住, etc., there are many 诪驻专砖讬诐 who speak about it. But the way he answers it is based on this 住讘专讗: That since the father had an obligation, or at least was able to include his son into his 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, and the father was 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, had a 爪讬讜讜讬 on 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, and also possible had a 爪讬讜讜讬 of including the children if we hold 砖讛 诇讘讬转 讗讘讜转 讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, etc., so then automatically, the child who helped out his father fulfill his 讞讬讜讘, also was like a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, was as if he was commanded and he did, and therefore, later on when he becomes a 讙讚讜诇, doesn't have to fulfill it again, because he already fulfilled his 讞讬讜讘. A 专讗讬讛 he brings to this 砖讬讟讛 is from 砖讬讟转 转讜住驻讜转 concerning the 讚讬谉 of 讗砖讛 讘注诇讛 诪砖诪讞讛. Like this, there is a 讚讬谉 at a 讬讜诐 讟讜讘, there is a 讚讬谉 of 讜砖诪讞转 讘讞讙讱, you have to be happy, which means you have to bring 拽专讘谞讜转 砖诪讞讛. And the 讙诪专讗 says that 讗砖讛 讘注诇讛 诪砖诪讞讛, that a woman, her husband gives her 砖诪讞讛. And 转讜住驻讜转 learns that that means that her husband has to give her part of his 拽专讘谉, but she herself is not obligated to bring a 拽专讘谉. It's her husband's obligation to give her part of his 拽专讘谉. Nevertheless, 转讜住驻讜转 says in 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 讚祝 讜壮, that the 讙诪专讗 in 讞讙讬讙讛 says that 讗诪讗讬 诪讞讬讬讘讗 讘砖诪讞讛? that a woman is 讞讬讬讘 讘砖诪讞讛. Now the question is: How can we say she is 讞讬讬讘 讘砖诪讞讛, when really she is not, it's only her husband that is 讞讬讬讘 to give her? So we, 转讜住驻讜转 says the reason she is called 讞讬讬讘 讘砖诪讞讛, because since her husband has to give her, 诪诪讬诇讗 she is considered 讞讬讬讘. So the explanation is the same as we mentioned before. Since the way the husband can fulfill his 讞讬讜讘 of giving 砖诪讞讛 to his wife is by his wife participating, so it comes out that she helps him to fulfill his 讞讬讜讘, and therefore she is considered being 诪讞讜讬讬讘 讘砖诪讞讛. This also answers another question. The 讙诪专讗 in the beginning of 讞讙讬讙讛, when it speaks about 讛拽讛诇, it says that the 诪爪讜讛 was that you have to gather in the beginning of the year, on 住讜讻讜转, the year after 砖诪讬讟讛, you have to gather 讗谞砖讬诐, 谞砖讬诐 讜讟祝, men, women and children, and they would come to listen to the king reading the 转讜专讛. And the 讙诪专讗 says: 讗谞砖讬诐 讘讗讬诐 诇诇诪讜讚, men came to learn, 谞砖讬诐 讘讗讜转 诇砖诪讜注, women came to hear, 讟祝 诇诪讛 讘讗讬诐? why did the children come? 诇讬转谉 砖讻专 诇诪讘讬讗讬讛诐, to give 砖讻专, reward, to those who bring them. In other words, really there is no reason for them to come. It is a 讞讬讜讘 on the parents to bring the children so the parents will get 砖讻专, will get reward. But the children themselves, there is no reason for them to come. In other words, there is really no 讞讬讜讘 on the children to come to 讛拽讛诇, it's a 讞讬讜讘 on the parents to bring the children. Nevertheless, the 讙诪专讗 in 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 讚祝 诇状讚 注诪讜讚 讘壮 says that 讟驻诇讬诐 讞讬讬讘讬诐, that children are obligated in the 诪爪讜讛 of 讛拽讛诇. But according to the way the 讙诪专讗 says in 讞讙讬讙讛 讙壮 注诪讜讚 讗壮, that the whole reason the children come is to give 砖讻专 to the parents, in other words, there is no obligation on the children. So how could the 讙诪专讗 in 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 say that 讟驻诇讬诐 讞讬讬讘讬谉? And the answer is, as we mentioned before, that really the 讞讬讜讘 is not on the children, the 讞讬讜讘 on the parents to bring the children. But since the way the parents fulfill their 讞讬讜讘 is by the participation of the children, the children help the parents fulfill this 讞讬讜讘, so therefore the children also become, so to speak, a 诪爪讜讜讛 讜注讜砖讛, and therefore they are also considered as being 讞讬讬讘讬谉 in the 诪爪讜讛 of 讛拽讛诇.
