My Zayde Rav Zalman Vilnkin told me that he was once by a farbrengen or mesibah that the Rebbe's father was there in 拽讗讟专讬谞讗住诇讗讜讜, and someone asked him peshat in this Midrash Peli'ah, and this is what he answered. The Midrash Peli'ah says like this: One tanna said to the other, \"诪讛 砖诪讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗? What is the name of Hashem?\" 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, \"rachmana liba ba'ei.\" It's an expression in Gemara that the Torah, the Eibershter, wants the heart. That's what he answered him. 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, \"诪驻谞讬 诪讛 讻讜诇诐 住讚讜专讜转 讜讝讜 讛驻讜讻讛? Why are they all straight and this one is upside down, backwards?\" 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, \"讞讜转诪讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗 讗诪转. The seal of Hashem is emet.\" Then he added, \"讛讚讗 讚讻转讬讘,\" this is what it says, a pasuk in Kohelet 讚' 讞', \"讬砖 讗讞讚 讜讗讬谉 砖谞讬 讙诐 讘谉 讜讗讞 讗讬谉 诇讜.\" There is one and not a second, and a son and a sister and a brother he doesn't have, a son and a brother he doesn't have. So this seemingly doesn't make any sense, the question and the answer. What's the question? What's the answer? So he said the peshat is like this: The tanna who asked him what the name of Hashem, he answered him, \"Rachmana liba ba'ei.\"
Rachmana liba ba'ei is 专讗砖讬 转讬讘讜转 专' 诇' 讘'. 专' 诇' 讘' is 232. Now we know in Kabbalah it says that there are four names to Hashem: 砖诐 诪\"讛, 诪' 讛', which is 45; 砖诐 讘\"谉, 讘' 谞', which is 52; 砖诐 住\"讙, 住' 讙', which is 63; and 砖诐 注' 讙', and 砖诐 注\"讘, I mean 注' 讘', which is 72. And this is all based on 砖诐 讛讜讬讛. 砖诐 讛讜讬讛 is 讬讜\"讚 拽\"讛 讜讗\"讜 拽\"讛, 讘讙讬诪讟专讬讗 26. But each letter has a milui, has a filling that you fill up, and there are different ways to make the milui, and depending on which way, that's how you come out. One way to make the milui is comes up to 45, one comes to 52, one comes to 63, one comes to 72. So when he asked him, \"诪讛 砖诪讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, what's Hashem's name?\" what he really answered him was these four names. These four names, 45, and 52, and 63, and 72, add up to 232. So really what he wrote, what he answered him was 专' 诇' 讘', all these four names, and the way he said it was 专讞诪谞讗 诇讬讘讗 讘注讬, the roshei teivot is 专' 诇'
讘'. 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so then he answered him, \"诪驻谞讬 诪讛 讻讜诇诐 住讚讜专讜转 讜讝讜 讛驻讜讻讛? Why are they all straight, and this one is backwards or upside down?\" He meant to ask, we see by the 诪\"讛, 诪' 讛', 45, the four is before the five, the big number, the 40 is before the small number, the five. By 住' 讙', 63, is also 住', 讙', first the 60, then the three. By 注' 讘' is also 注', the 70, and 讘' is two, first the big number, then the small one. How come when it comes to the second 砖诐, which is 讘\"谉, we say 讘' 谞', first the 讘' and then the 谞', first the small number, then the 谞', the 50? That's what he asked him. 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he answered him, the reason is because 讞讜转诪讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗 讗诪转, the seal of Hashem is 讗诪转. And the peshat is, that's not the peshat, it says in sefarim that we see takeh that 讗诪转 in 诪住驻专 拽讟谉 is a gematria nine. Mispar katan means when you count the big numbers as one, like 40 would be four, 400 would be again four, you count them as four. So if you count 讗诇祝 诪诐 转祝, 讗诇祝 is one, 诪诐 is 40, 转祝 is 400. So really, b'mispar katan it's one, and four, and four is nine. The number nine represents the truth, because the truth is something that never changes from all sides. That's why emes is made up of three letters, 讗诇祝, 诪诐, 转祝. 讗诇祝 is the first letter of the 讗诇祝 讘讬转, 诪诐 the middle one, and 转祝 the last one, that means that it goes through and through, from beginning to end. And that's connected to the number nine, because nine is the same way, however you're going to multiply nine, it'll come up to nine. Three times nine is 27, so two and seven is nine. Seven times nine is 63, six and three is nine. Whichever number you're going to say, twice times nine is 18, one and eight is nine. That's how you go on. So nine represents the emes, and that's what he answered him: \"You know why this one is mixed up, that first the 讘', then the 谞'? Because the seal of HaKadosh Baruch Hu is emes, and we want them all to add up to nine.\" So 45, 诪\"讛, adds up to nine, four and five is nine. 住' 讙', 63, 住' is 60, but 住' is six, and three is nine. 注' 讘', 72, the seven and two is nine. Adds up to nine. But if we'd make the second one 谞\"讘, 谞' 讘', that would be seven. 谞' is 50, which is five, and 讘' is two, so it's seven. But in order to that that also should add up to nine, we changed it to 讘谉, 讘讬转 谞讜谉. Why? Because we know that even though the numbers, the gematria of the numbers goes like this: go all the way up to 转祝, 转祝 is 400. 砖讬谉 is 300, 专讬砖 is 200, and 转祝 is the last letter, that's 400. Now
usually nowadays what we do when we want to write 500, 600, we would write 转祝 拽讜祝, 400 and 拽讜祝 which is 100, is 500. 转祝 专讬砖 is 400 and 200 is 600. But really there's another way. It says in sefarim that after you finish with the 转祝 being 400, you go to the additional letters. There is an additional letter to the 讻祝, the 诇讗谞讙注专 讻祝. There's additional letters, letter to the 诪诐, 诇讗谞讙注专 诪诐, there 住转讜诪讛 诪诐 I mean, the end 诪诐. Then you have additional letter to the 谞讜谉, the long 谞讜谉, the 诇讗谞讙注专 谞讜谉, and then you go out to the other letters that you have. So it comes out that 转祝 is 400. Now 诇讗谞讙注专 讻祝 is 500, and and the 诪诐 is 600, and 谞讜谉, the 诇讗谞讙注专 谞讜谉, is 700. So if you write 讘讬转 谞讜谉, you have two and then 700, which is 诪住驻专 拽讟谉 seven, so it comes out to nine. And that's what he answered him. When he asked him why the 讘谉 is first the 讘讬转 then the 谞讜谉, so he said, because the seal of Hashem is emes. Emes is nine, so we wanted this also to add up to nine, so by changing it to 讘讬转 and a 诇讗谞讙注专 谞讜谉, it also adds up to nine. And then he
said, this is the remez in the pasuk where it says, 讬砖 讗讞讚 讜讗讬谉 砖谞讬, there is one, that goes on the Aibershter, there is one, there is no other one like him, and that's hinted in the fact that his seal is emes. Emes is one, from all sides it's emes, so it's one. But then the pasuk continues, 讙诐 讘谉, what about 讘谉? 讘谉 is 讘讬转 诇讗谞讙注专 谞讜谉. Why do we count it, why do we write it as a 讘讬转 诇讗谞讙注专 谞讜谉, why don't you write it 谞讜谉 讘讬转? It's as if the pasuk is asking, 讙诐 讘谉, and the answer is, 讜讗讞 讗讬谉 诇讜, it doesn't have 讗讞. 讗诇祝, 讗讞 is 讗诇祝 讞讬转, which is nine. So the answer why 讘谉 is 讘讬转 谞讜谉, not 谞讜谉 讘讬转, because if you'd make it 讘讬转 谞讜谉, if you'd make it 谞讜谉 讘讬转, it wouldn't have the nine. So that's what the pasuk says, 讬砖 讗讞讚 讜讗讬谉 砖谞讬, 讙诐 讘谉, 讘谉, 讘谉, why is the second one 讘谉 not 谞讘? The answer is, 讜讗讞 讗讬谉 诇讜, because it doesn't have the nine. 讗诇祝 讞讬转 is nine, so it doesn't have the nine. 讗讞 讗讬谉 诇讜, it doesn't have the nine, that's why we changed it to 讘谉, and then that has the 讘讬转 and the 诇讗谞讙注专 谞讜谉 which is 700, is together nine.
