ACHARON SHEL PESACH

Acharon Shel Pesach

A puzzling line in the pre-Krias HaTorah tefillah — asking that a pasuk describing Mashiach be fulfilled on us — turns out to rest on the spark of Mashiach hidden inside every Yid.

Part of Acharon Shel Pesach

Examines the Rebbe's question on the tefillah recited before Krias HaTorah, where we ask that the pasuk describing Mashiach's ruach — chochmah, binah, eitzah, gevurah, daas, and yiras Hashem — be fulfilled upon us, even though the pasuk was written about Mashiach alone. Resolves it through the Me'or Einayim's teaching that every Yid carries a nitzotz of Mashiach, the same principle the Alter Rebbe uses in Tanya to explain how Moshe Rabbeinu's 'small thing' of yiras Hashem applies to every Jew at his own level. Closes by connecting this tefillah especially to Acharon Shel Pesach, the day of Mashiach's haftarah and the Baal Shem Tov's Seudas Mashiach.

The Haftarah's Pesukim About Mashiach — and a Startling Request to Have Them Fulfilled on Us

A vort of the Rebbe about Yom Tov, and especially about Acharon Shel Pesach. On Acharon Shel Pesach, we say the haftarah about Mashiach. And the pesukim that we read describe Mashiach. The pesukim say, \"ונחה עליו רוח ה׳,\" on him will rest the spirit of ה׳, \"רוח חכמה ובינה, רוח עצה וגבורה, רוח דעת ויראת ה׳,\" the spirit of חכמה and בינה, the spirit of advice and strength, and the spirit of knowledge and יראת ה׳. And then the pasuk continues, \"והריחו ביראת ה׳,\" etc., that he is going to smell יראת ה׳, which means he's going to be able to judge people based on smelling. He wouldn't even have to judge him by looking into, researching his case. That's what Mashiach is. But then the Rebbe asks a she'eilah, a question: Every Yom Tov, when it comes to קריאת התורה, when we open the ארון קודש before קריאת התורה, there is a special tefillah that we say. And that tefillah starts with the words רבונו של עולם, מלא משאלות לבנו לטובה, that the Eibershter should fulfill what we're asking for. And then one of the things we say we're asking the Eibershter should fulfill upon us, \"ויקוים בנו מקרא שכתוב,\" should be fulfilled on us the pasuk that says, \"ונחה עליו רוח ה׳, רוח חכמה ובינה, רוח עצה וגבורה, רוח דעת ויראת ה׳.\" The pasuk that we said before is written about Mashiach, we're asking ה׳ that that pasuk should be fulfilled upon us. And the Rebbe asks an obvious question: It's a pasuk that describes Mashiach, what do we mean when we're saying please let that be fulfilled upon us? Not only does it sound wrong, it sounds even chutzpadik. You're standing in front of the ארון קודש, in front of the ספר תורה, and almost like making a joke here, that the pasuk that describes Mashiach, we're asking that it should be fulfilled upon us. How can you do that? What do we mean by saying that? So much so that there were some that said not to say it, because it belongs it's something that has to do with Mashiach, not with every single Yid. So how could we say it?

Every Yid's Nitzotz of Mashiach: The Same Idea Behind Moshe Rabbeinu's 'Small Thing'

And the Rebbe answers that the pshat is like this: It says in Me'or Einayim that every Yid has a ניצוץ of Mashiach within him. Every Yid has a spark of Mashiach, a little bit of משיח'ס נשמה in him. So, whatever it says about Mashiach, to a certain degree, in a certain level, could fit to every single Yid. Just like it says that every single Yid has a little bit of Moshe Rabbeinu within him. Pasuk says that the Eibershter said to Moshe to tell the Yidden, \"מה ה׳ אלקיך שואל מעמך כי אם ליראה את ה׳ אלקיך.\" What is Hashem asking of you? Just to fear Hashem! And the Gemara asks, \"וכי יראה מילתא זוטרתא היא?\" What do you mean all he's asking is to fear Hashem, is it a small thing? And the Gemara says, \"אין,\" yes, \"לגבי משה מילתא זוטרתא היא.\" For Moshe it's a small thing. And the Alter Rebbe in Tanya asks, but he's not talking just to Moshe, talking to every Yid. So what do we mean that for Moshe it's an easy thing, so that's why the Eibershter refers to every Yid that it's a very small thing to ask for, to fear Hashem? And in Tanya the Alter Rebbe answers, every Yid has a little bit of Moshe in him. And therefore, מצד the ניצוץ of Moshe, the spark of Moshe that's in every single Yid, yes, every single Yid could do something to a certain degree, in a very small level, what is expected of Moshe Rabbeinu. And the Rebbe says the same thing here is well also: Since every Yid, as the Maor Einayim says, has a spark of Mashiach within him, so whatever the Torah describes משיח, takeh applies to every single Yid in his level. And that's why we ask when we say this Ribbono Shel Olam, \"ויקוים בנו מקרא שכתוב,\" yes, let it be fulfilled in us the pasuk which is written by Mashiach, that the spirit of Hashem will rest upon him, the spirit of chachmah and binah, the spirit of etzah and gevurah, the spirit of daat and יראת ה׳, everyone in his level. Which also explains why we only say that part of the pasuk. We don't say the further pesukim where it describes Mashiach, how he's going to judge, etc., etc., because that takeh is not shayach to every single Yid. Every single Yid is not judging. But when describing the spirit, the ruchniyusdike spirit Mashiach has, that is something that everyone has a nitzotz of it, and we're asking the Eibershter that that should be fulfilled to all of us.

Why This Tefillah Belongs Especially to Acharon Shel Pesach and the Baal Shem Tov's Seudas Mashiach

And it's shayach to every Yom Tov, because every Yom Tov we say this tefillah, and it's especially shayach to אחרון של פסח, but אחרון של פסח is a day that we say the haftarah of Mashiach with this pasuk. Besides that, we know אחרון של פסח is a special, it says in Chassidus, the gilui of Mashiach is stronger on אחרון של פסח. That's why the Baal Shem Tov instituted that we should eat a special meal towards the end of the day of אחרון של פסח, and he called it משיח'ס סעודה. By doing that, we're not only expressing our emunah that Mashiach is coming, we're even making a feast out of it, we're making a party in honor of the coming of Mashiach because the גילוי המשיח is stronger. And that's why we have the haftarah of Mashiach on that day. And that's when we have to feel that besides that we strengthen our emunah in Mashiach, we also have to strengthen the חלק המשיח that we have, the part of Mashiach that we have within us, and strengthen all these things of the רוח השם, רוח חכמה ובינה, רוח עצה וגבורה, רוח דעת ויראת השם. And for sure the Eibershter accepts our tefilot, and we hope that this year by time we say this and time we come to Acharon Shel Pesach, already we will see Mashiach with our own eyes and we'll be already in Eretz Yisrael together with Mashiach Tzidkeinu b'karov mamash.
