Kohen Gadol鈥檚 Torah Reading on Yom Kippur

We're holding here the end of 住\"讞, the end of 住\"讞, page 住\"讟, but mamash the last two lines. 讞讝谉 讛讻谞住转 谞讜讟诇 住驻专 转讜专讛. This is all still in Yoma, so we're learning still about the Kohen Gadol in Yom Kippur. So it said the Kohen Gadol would read, on Yom Kippur he would there was a he would read from the Torah. And there's a whole procedure how the Torah came to him. So the 讞讝谉 讛讻谞住转, this was like the gabai, the shamash, I don't know what you'd call him, took the Sefer Torah and gave it to one, and that one gave it to the other to give him each kavod. And finally the last one, which was the 住讙谉 讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇, the second-in-command to the Kohen Gadol, gave it to the Kohen Gadol. 驻专注讙讟 讚讬 Gemara: so the Gemara says, 砖诪注 诪讬谞讛, doesn't that show, 讞讜诇拽讬谉 讻讘讜讚 诇转诇诪讬讚 讘诪拽讜诐 讛专讘? That you're allowed to give kavod, honor, to a talmid, to a student, in front of the rav? Because there is a big argument if you're allowed, and here we say we give kavod to the lower levels, right, even though the Kohen Gadol, who was the rav, is standing there, and nevertheless we give each one to give them the kavod. 讗诪专 讗讘讬讬: so Abaye said, no! 讻讜诇讛 诪砖讜诐 讻讘讜讚 讻讘讜讚讜 讚讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇. It's not to give them kavod, it's a bigger kavod for the Kohen Gadol if you give one and another till finally he's the top top and he gets it, so it's not that you're giving them kavod. To show everybody that's lower than him, that he's at that he's above. Right, to show that he's highest, yeah. Then it says, a 讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇 注讜诪讚, the Kohen Gadol would stand up.

Kohen Gadol Sitting and Standing in the Azarah

驻专注讙讟 讚讬 Gemara: 诪讻诇诇 砖讛讜讗 讬讜砖讘, to stand up you got to first sit, it shows he was sitting there. How could he sit in the Azarah? In the Azarah, only the kings from 讚讜讚's family are allowed to sit in the Azarah. 砖谞讗诪专, it says, 讜讬讘讗 讛诪诇讱 讚讜讚, King David came, 讜讬砖讘 诇驻谞讬 讛', and he sat down in front of Hashem'. So nobody else could. So how's the 讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇 allowed to sit? So the Gemara says, In a different question, similar question, Rav Chisda answered that that wasn't in the 注讝专讛. See, the 注讝专讛 had many departments: one was the 注讝专讛 where the 诪讝讘讞 was, then you had 注讝专转 讻讛谞讬诐, 注讝专转 讬砖专讗诇, then you had 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐. But 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐 was a much lower level of 注讝专讛. And I always repeat this, that 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐 does not mean like we call now the 讜讜讬讬讘注专 砖讜诇. Right. To 讜讜讬讬讘注专, it's not a place for 讜讜讬讬讘注专, not a place for women. It's it's called 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐 because women were allowed to go there, too. The next level, which is 注讝专转 讬砖专讗诇, women were not allowed to go. So this is called It got we got this from this we got the name that the women's section of the shul is called Yeah, yeah. There everybody was allowed to sit? Huh? Everybody's allowed to sit? There you're allowed to sit. So over here 讘注讝专转 谞砖讬诐, here in 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐 you're allowed to sit, and that's what the 讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇 was.

Location Debate: Where the Kohen Gadol Read

讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇 would read on Yom Kippur in the 住驻专 转讜专讛. So the Gemara asks, Where did he stand to read? Was it 讘注讝专讛? Rabbi Binyamin bar Yaakov says, no, it wasn't 讛专 讛讘讬转 was not even the 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐, 讛专 讛讘讬转 was outside of the whole section, it was on the mountain, within the walls of the mountain, but not in the walls of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖. 砖谞讗诪专, as we find in a different place it says by Ezra, 讜讬拽专讗 讘讜 诇驻谞讬 讛专讞讜讘, Ezra read in the Torah in front of the street, 讗砖专 诇驻谞讬 砖注专 讛诪讬诐, 诪谉 讛讗讜专 注讚 诪讞爪讬转 讛讬讜诐, 诪讞爪讬转 讛讬讜诐, he read a whole from the morning till middle of the day, 谞讙讚 讛讗谞砖讬诐 讜讛谞砖讬诐, in front of the men and the women, 讜讛诪讘讬谞讬诐, and those that understood, 讜讗讝谞讬 讻诇 讛注诐 讗诇 住驻专 讛转讜专讛, and everyone was listening. 讜讗诪专 专讘 讞住讚讗, and Rav Chisda says, 讘注讝专转 谞砖讬诐, it was in the 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐. So here we see that it, so Rav, no, Rav Chisda says 讘注讝专转 谞砖讬诐, so we have an opinion it was in the 注讝专讛, the other opinion it was 讛专 讛讘讬转, and Rav Chisda says that what it says there is 注讝专转 谞砖讬诐. Were they not men and women? No, men and women whoever when 讜讛诪讘讬谞讬诐. If it's, it's like a the some a description of the men and the women. Then it says, 讜讬讘专讱 注讝专讗

Ezra鈥檚 Blessing and the Use of the Divine Name

注讝专讗 blessed 讛' 讗诇拽讬诐 the great One, 讜讬注谞讜 讻诇 讛注诐 讗诪谉 讗诪谉, 讘诪讜注诇 讬讚讬讛诐, they they answered amen amen with picking up their hands, 讜讬拽讚讜 讜讬砖转讞讜讜 诇讛' 讗驻讬诐 讗专爪讛, they bowed down and they fell to their faces in the ground. What do you mean Why the great 讗诇拽讬诐? What all of a sudden you mean Amar Rav Yosef, Rav Yosef said, 讗诪专 专讘, in the name of 专讘, 砖讙讚诇讜 讘砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖. He made Him big, he used the 砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖. Nowadays we're not allowed to use that name, whenever it says 讬讜讚 拽讬讬 讜讗讜 拽讬讬 in the Siddur or Chumash we only read it 讗讚谞讬 as if it would say 讗诇祝 讚诇转 谞讜谉 讬讜讚. We're not allowed to read 注讝专讗 did this. And Rav Gidal amar Rav, Rav Gidal 讗诪专 said that he did that's not what it means, it means he said, 讘专讜讱 讛' 讗诇拽讬 讬砖专讗诇 诪谉 讛注讜诇诐 讜注讚 讛注讜诇诐, he said, blessed 讛' God Could it be used, the 砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖, was because he was a navi or everybody knew it? Abaye says to Rav Dimi, why do you say, where is it Rav Dimi? Here, Dimi. Why does he say that what he said was Maybe he said the 砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖? You're not allowed to say 砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖 in outside of Yerushalayim. Outside, actually 住转诪讗 means outside of of Yerushalayim of the of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, you're not allowed to say the 砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖. No, this is Ezra. Oh Ezra. In Yerushalayim No, no, when he came, this wasn't in the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖. You tell me you can't? 讜讛讻转讬讘, there's another pasuk that says, 讜讬注诪讚 注讝专讗 讛住讜驻专 注诇 诪讙讚诇 注抓 讗砖专 注砖讜 诇讚讘专, that 注讝专讗 stood on the 诪讙讚诇 注抓, 讜讗诪专 专讘 讙讬讚诇 砖讙讚诇讜 讘砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖, that he did say the 砖诐 讛诪驻讜专砖 that time. So that was like an exception to the rule. And then probably because he's a navi, a navi's allowed to do a 讛讜专讗转 砖注讛, probably that's the reason allowed to do it. Did everybody know it, or only the navi would know? No, kohanim. Only the kohanim knew it? I don't know, nevi'im, the Kohen Gadol, kohanim knew it. How did they know that? They were taught. When they went inside the Yeah, they were taught, the Kohen Gadol. Like it was written on the board, no? No, no, they were taught. It was passed by others, other people? By people before, yeah, they were taught. Then already, he's talking about he quotes another pasuk: 讜讬拽诐 注诇 诪注诇讛 讛诇讜讬诐, on the steps of the Levi'im got up, Yeshua and 讘谞讬 and Kadmiel and Shevania and 讘谞讬 and 砖专讘讬讛, 讘谞讬, 讘谞讬 讻谞谞讬, 讻谞谞讬, 讜讬讝注拽讜 讘拽讜诇 讙讚讜诇 讗诇 讛砖诐 讗诇讜拽讬讛诐, and they screamed in a loud voice. These are people, holy people.

Yetzer Hara Story: Destroyed Temple and Its Cause

What did they say? 讗诪专 专讘, 专讘 said, 讜讗讬转讬诪讗 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, 专讘讬 讬讜讞谞谉, this is what they said: Bye bye. This guy who destroyed the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, and who is this guy? The yetzer hara. 讜拽诇讬讛 诇讛讬讻诇讗, and he burned our 讛讬讻诇. All because of the, everything happened because the yetzer hara. Yetzer hara got people to do aveirot and this is what destroyed the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, he's got the the 讛讬讻诇 burned, 讜拽讟诇讬谞讛讜 诇爪讚讬拽讬讗, and killed the 爪讚讬拽讬诐, 讜讗讙诇讬谞讛讜 诇讬砖专讗诇 诪谉 讗专注讛讜谉, and he chased out the Yidden from Eretz Yisrael, from their land, 讜注讚讬谉 拽讗 诪专拽讚 讘讬谞谉, he's still dancing among amongst us. In other words, he's saying you scream it to the Eibershter, the yetzer hara is at fault and he destroyed the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 and the yetzer hara is still there. And actually, we're talking about the yetzer hara of 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛, because that was the worst yetzer hara then. The only reason you gave us the yetzer hara, speaking to the Eibershter, so we get sechar. Yetzer hara convinces us to do an aveirah, we don't listen to him so we get sechar. We don't need the sechar, forget about the sechar, the reward, don't better put us into this test. 谞驻诇 诇讛讜 驻转拽讗 诪专拽讬注讗, so they got These people were from the 讗谞砖讬 讻谞住转 讛讙讚讜诇讛. There was a note that came from Heaven to them, 讚讻转讘 讘讛, it said there, emet. It said emet. What does the word emet mean? What did it mean to them? You are right. You guys are upset about the yetzer hara of 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛, do something about it. Wait, but the worst 讬爪专 讛专注 had to do more with with them not with with with 讬讬讚谉 not getting along with each other rather than 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛? No, that's later. That's a different That's also from the 讬爪专 讛专注. That's also a concept of 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛. Oh, the concept of 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛? It's connect I mean it's not 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛, because it's Right. So did they fast for three days? Yeah, we'll see, listen. Yeah, this was this was the first. Oh, this was the Yeah, that's why the first also there was no no 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇, because if there would have been it would have never destroyed even for other aveirot. Anyway, so emet means you're right.

The Meaning of Emet as God鈥檚 Seal

And here we know that Hashem's seal is emet. And it says why Hashem's seal is emet, because emet is always emet is nine, and the number nine that's the emet, because number nine always remains nine, never could change. Whatever you multiply nine will always come back to nine. 9 * 5 is 45, 4 and 5 is 9. 7 * 9 is 63, 6 and 3 is 9. 8 * 9 is 72, 7 and 2. The nine will always come back to nine. 10 * 9 is 90. How is emet nine though? 讗诇祝, 诪诐, 讗诇祝 is one, 诪诐 is 40, which is four, and 转 is 400, which is four, yeah, so this is 诪住驻专 拽讟谉. Yeah. So, the bottom line is they saw 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐 that they're giving them the green light to do something about the 讬爪专 讛专注 of 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛. Yeah, yeah. That's a Yerushalmi. 讬转讘讬 讘转注谞讬转讗 转诇转讗 讬讜诪讬 讜转诇转讗 诇讬诇讜讜转讗, they sat, they fasted for three days and three nights. 诪住专讜 谞讬讛诇讬讛, so they got it, they gave him over the the the 讗讬讬讘注专砖讟注专 gave the 讬爪专 讛专注 over to them.

Capturing the Yetzer Hara in a Lead Barrel

saw coming out of the 拽讚砖 讛拽讚砖讬诐 like a flame of fire, and they realized, 讗诪专 诇讛讜 谞讘讬讗 诇讬砖专讗诇, so the navi said to them, 讛讬讬谞讜 讬爪专讗 讚注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛, this is it! This guy, this is the 讬爪专 讛专注 of 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛, 砖谞讗诪专, it says, 讜讬讗诪专 讝讗转 讛专砖注讛. This was the guy, this is the bad guy. 讘讛讚讬 讚转驻住讜 诇讬讛, when they grabbed him, 讗砖转诪讬讟 讘讬谞讬转讗 诪讘讬讝讬讬讗, so one hair got from his from his head fell out, 讜专诪讗 拽诇讗, so he started screaming. 讗讝诇 拽诇讬讛 讗专讘注 诪讗讛 驻专住讬, his voice reached so far you could hear it 400 驻专住讗讜转 away. What should we do? If we start killing him and start doing something, he'll scream, and what will happen? 讚讬诇诪讗 诪专讞诪讬 诪谉 砖诪讬讗, he'll scream and the Aibershter, in the 砖诪讬诐 they'll have pity on him. 讗诪专 诇讛讜 谞讘讬讗, the 谞讘讬讗 said to them, 砖讚讬讜讛 讘讚讜讚讗 讚讗讘专讗, put it into a leaden, a lead barrel, 讜讞驻讬讜讛 诇驻讜诪讬讛 讘讗讘专讗, 讚砖讗讬讘 拽诇讗, and cover it, seal it with lead, and lead absorbs the voice so the voice won't come out. Noiseproof. Okay. And they got rid of him. Doesn't say exactly what they did, but they locked him up, they put him in, and that was it. Except for that little hair. Except for that little hair. He might be inside. Yeah. You know what the Alter Rebbe said? The Alter Rebbe said that in order to do this they had to exchange the yetzer hara. Couldn't just take him away. So they exchanged it for the yetzer hara for money. And he said, \"I don't know if they made better, 讗讬讱 讜讜讬讬住 谞讬砖讟 爪讬 诪'讛讗讟 讙注诪讗址讻讟 讘注住注专, like getting the yetzer hara of 讙注诇讟.\" 讗诪专讜, now they said, No, no, that's not him, that's the yetzer hara of ta'avah. 讗诪专讜, they said, 讛讜讗讬诇 讜注转 专爪讜谉 讛讜讗, since it's a good, auspicious time, 谞讘注讬 专讞诪讬 讗讬讬爪专讗 讚注讘讬专讛. Let's try to do the same thing to catch the yetzer hara for 讝谞讜转, for adultery. 讘注讜 专讞诪讬, so they davened for it, 讜诪住专讜讛讜 诇讛讜, they got him too. If you kill him, the world will stop. You won't be able, there will be no more generations, people... Yeah, that's... but that's not the first, it's the second piece. 讞讘砖讜讛 转诇转讗 讬讜诪讬, so they tied him up for three days, didn't do anything to him. Those three days, 讜讘注讜 讘讬注转讗 讘转 讬讜诪讗 诇讞讜诇讛 讘讻诇 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 讜诇讗 讗砖转讻讞, they needed a fresh egg that was from that day, couldn't find one fresh egg in 讬专讜砖诇- in Eretz Yisrael. What should we do? To kill him? 讬讞专讘 讻讜诇讬 注诇诪讗, the world will be destroyed. 谞讘注讬 专讞诪讬 讗驻诇讙讗, so let's ask the Aibershter for half! They don't give half. 讻讞诇讬谞讛讜 诇注讬谞讬讛 讜砖讘拽讜讛, they they they poked out his eyes or they they did something like they they blinded his eyes and they let him go. 讜讗讛谞讬, so that at least
