Holding at the beginning of the perek. Tanya, it says in the Why is it? It says that by some people, rachmana litzlan, when the children are small they would die. In order for him to cry and be have avelut on a ืืื ืืฉืจ, on a fine person who passes away, he should have avelut for him, should feel bad for him. So because of that, it happens. But the Gemara says, I don't understand, ืืื ืฉืืืื? In order he should cry? ืขืจืื ืฉืงืื ืืื ืื, are you taking a ืขืจื? He didn't do it yet. ืืืื, you say he's punishment for not doing something. So to make sure that he's going to do something, so the Aibershter takes away? How can that be? So he says that's that's not what it meant, ืืื ืืคื ื ืฉืื ืืื, because in a case When does this happen? To a person who did not cry, or ืืชืืื ืขื ืืื ืืฉืจ, that he did not cry when a person died, like a fine Yid died, and it didn't bother him, didn't cry, the punishment, chas veshalom, is this inyan. That his children die. ืฉืื ืืืืื ืืืชืืื ืขื ืืื ืืฉืจ, anybody who cries and has ืืืืืืช for ืืื ืืฉืจ, ืืืืืื ืื ืขื ืื ืขืืื ืืชืื, the Aibershter forgives him. That's such an important thing, it forgives him for all ืขืืืจืืช, ืืฉืืื ืืืื ืฉืขืฉื, because he gives him kavod. So give kavod to a ืืื ืืฉืจ. Really you're not giving him kavod. Giving him kavod? He's giving kavod, the fact that he's a fine Yid, he did mitzvot. Yeah, yeah, I mean a special, a fine, you know, a fine Yid. What is a fine Yid? Somebody who keeps Torah u'mitzvot. So you're giving kavod not to him, you're giving kavod to the Torah u'mitzvot that he did. So that's Why do you need crying? That's the kavod. Yeah, like crying, feeling bad. You cry twice, does that mean really cry tears? Tears cry, yeah, cry and feel bad and have avelut. Feel bad, cry. And mourning. Keri'ah and mourn. To cry and to mourn, those are the two ืืฉืื ืืช in the Gemara. Tanya, it says in the beraita, He
said, ืจืื ืฉืืขืื ืื ืืืขืืจ ืืืืจ ืืฉืื ืจื ืฉืืขืื ืืืืคื ืื ืืืืจื, ืฉืืข ืืฉืื ืจืื ืืืื ื ืื ื ืืจื, he said like this, ืืืงืจืข ืืืืื ืืืืชื, if someone tears clothes out of anger, he gets anger angry and tears clothes, ืืืืฉืืจ ืืืื ืืืืชื, someone who breaks a ืืื, he gets angry and he throws something and it breaks, ืืืืคืืจ ืืขืืชืื ืืืืชื, if someone throws his money away because he's angry, ืืื ืืขืื ืื ืืขืืื ืขืืืื ืืจื, you should look at the guy as if he's worshipping ืขืืืื ืืจื. Basically, he's worshipping his anger. I mean, if he can't control himself, so he's worshipping something, he's worshipping his anger. Tearing his clothes or Yeah, tearing his clothes, or breaking. This is how what the yetzer hara does. This is ืืืืืจื this is a small thing. Why is this avodah zarah? Because the end is, he starts with this, end up avodah zarah. This is the the the expertise of a yetzer hara, of the yetzer hara. You don't actually get punished until you actually do the Yeah, so he said you should look in your eyes, you should look at him, cuz you know it's going to bring him to avodah zarah, cuz this is what the yetzer hara does. ืืืื ืืืืจ ืื ืขืฉื ืื, today it tells him do this. ืืืืืจ ืืืืจ ืื ืขืฉื ืื, tomorrow he says do that, ืขื ืฉืืืืจ ืื ืื ืขืืื ืขืืืื ืืจื, till he tells him worship ืขืืืื ืืจื, ืืืืื ืืขืืื, and you go and do it. In
other words, the yetzer hara knows he can't start out with a Yid and tell him, \"Go worship avodah zarah.\" Who's going to listen? Do a small thing, do a small aveirah. \"Okay, a small aveirah you'll listen.\" Then a bigger aveirah, a bigger, and finally do avodah zarah. And I always taytsh this as the Frierdiker Rebbe taytsh's it, the Rebbe brings it, that says, doesn't say Doesn't say he tells him do a small aveirah. He says, ืืืื ืืืืจ ืื ืขืฉื ืื, do this. So the Rebbe says, the pshat is, he even tells him to do a mitzvah. Yetzer hara tells him to do a mitzvah? Why does the yetzer hara want him to do a mitzvah? But the yetzer hara wants to get used that his opinion counts. The yetzer hara's opinion co- Huh? Oh you could know You you could know when it comes to do a mitzvah what your intentions are. If they're prove If they're pure intentions, then you know it's not from the yetzer hara. But the yetzer hara comes, you know, sometimes, \"Eh, do this, you know?\" Sometimes, there's another pshat, that he tells him on an aveirah, doesn't tell him do a small aveirah, he wouldn't listen to that, he tells him on an aveirah that this is really a mitzvah. He tries to convince a person, that could happen, like something that's bad, he tries to, \"In this case, no, this case you got to do it! It's going to help this, it's going to help that.\" That type of a person, he convinces a person that an aveirah is a mitzvah. So that's why, first he tells him ืขืฉื ืื, do do something which is a mitzvah, then he goes further. But another peshat is, he tells him, \"Do a mitzvah.\" But as long as you know that you need his ืืกืืื and you know that you need means ืขื ืคื ืฉืื, the seichel has to help you, that that what happens then? If you get used to that you have to feel good about it or the seichel has to agree, then, eventually, if you do something and the seichel doesn't agree, you won't do it! So what's an example of a mitzvah that I would the yetzer hara, I mean, the yetzer hara's telling me to do? It's a good thing, I have to do a mitzvah. Like shelo lishmah? When? When you someone comes in to help to ask you, you need help and you're learning, the yetzer hara tells you, \"Don't. It's learn! How can you have to learn? Learn Torah. How could you go help the guy? Learn Torah.\" And it told you not to. to yourself, you know, that that's a big mitzvah, and you have all kinds of ืจืืืืช, ืชืืืื ืชืืจื ืื ืื ืืืื, you have all kinds of things and Oh. ืฉืื ืืคืฉืจ yesterday. Yes. Did you find head tearing? Can you see stones? Got ready for something also, that he said also that anyway so. But what? Shema? Huh? For the Baal Shem Tov says yesterday, Yeah, that's something else. That's, obviously, that's That's what happened when you can't have chas v'shalom, Hashem. But no, the moment you're not, yeah, that's something else. Not doing Hashem, so you will do avodah zarah, But here it teaches it goes slow and it starts off with something good. It's not He's telling you, \"Do do for Hashem.\" But in ืืืกืคืช? In ืืืกืคืช? Everybody. In ืืืกืคืช he says, Yeah, so we got to be careful. At least we know what it is, so we're careful. But don't forget in the yetzer hara in such a time for avodah zarah, avodah zarah was very strong. First of all, in the time of the Gemara already it wasn't. Oh, really? No, this was much before it. Anshei Knesset Hagedolah. It goes back about 500 years before the Gemara that they did this. Oh, really? It's after, but even then, even then when it's ta'avah, the yetzer hara, there are still ta'avot nowadays that they we still have a yetzer hara. Yeah, not for avodah zarah. But the yetzer hara is not going to come to a person, \"Go ahead and do that ta'avah.\" Person has a ta'avah for for for adultery, so the yetzer hara is going to come, who's going to listen? So he starts off slowly, and then finally gets, even if it's a ta'avah, it could be. But besides, this wasn't a ta'avah. So what's the ta'avah for money? Huh? Ta'avah for money? Yeah. Isn't that what replaced avodah zarah? Yeah, that's what the Alter Rebbe said. When they killed the yetzer hara of avodah zarah, so the Alter Rebbe said they replaced it for the ta'avah ta'avah for avodah zarah to the ta'avah of money. And he said, \"Ikh veys nisht tsi men hot gemakht beser.\" What? \"I don't know if it was worth it.\" The Alter Rebbe said that they exchanged it for But then he said, \"I don't know if it was worth it.\" Because that's a very strong Because the ta'avah for money is just as bad as I know if No, who ever had a ta'avah for money Who's got a ta'avah for avodah zarah? A ta'avah for money, 200, 200 The Alter Rebbe was a He maybe said it as a joke, but he said it's terrible. Yeah, it was a joke. They like money. Used to be say ืขืื ืืืื. No, nowadays we have the ืขืื ืืืื. The ืขืื is for gold, for money. Yeah, the ta'avah for that's very strong. Strong, yeah, yeah, yeah. And still the yetzer hara won't come to a Yid and say, \"Go steal.\" It's a ta'avah to steal cuz I want his money. No, but what if he tells him, \"Go do a business deal instead of...\" Oh, go do something! \"...like instead of davenen, he is going to get a big deal.\" That I mean, all the time. That's, but that, He pushes for that. Yeah, but that's not steal. That's, no, not an aveirah. To do business an aveirah? But instead of learning. No, he says it doesn't, but I thought, I thought it's not the right thing to do like so it's half like, in other words, Depends when. Depends when he's supposed to. Everyone does business deals. Is that a terrible thing to do business deals? It's very good. Halavai! Depends when and depends how. No, but I'm saying, if it's if it's like a time that you shouldn't be doing it. You shouldn't Yeah, like if he does in Shabbos to do business deals, you're not allowed to. Rav Avin said, \"What's the pasuk? Where do we see that that the yetzer hara brings it to avodah zarah? Cuz the pasuk says ืื ืืืื ืื ืงื ืืจ, so not should not have in you a strange god, ืืื ืชืฉืชืืื ืืื ื ืืจ, and do not bow down to a strange god. When it says ืื ืืืื ืื ืื ืืจ, ืงื ืืจ, ืืืืื ืงื ืืจ ืฉืืฉ ืืืืคื ืฉื ืืื? It says there shouldn't have in you an avodah zarah. ืืื ืืืืจ ืื ืืฆืจ ืืจืข. What do we have in us? We have a yetzer hara, and he calls him there shouldn't be an avodah zarah in you. Why? Because the yetzer hara, no matter what, even if you listen to him a little bit, it ends up with avodah zarah. But then that's why if a person throw something, it's a small aveirah to break something when you're angry, but it could bring you. ืืขืืื ืืืืจืื ืืืืชื ืืืื ืฉื ืืืชืื, but if he does it so that family members should get scared, he sees people aren't the family aren't listening to him, then ืฉืจื, that's allowed. ืื ืื ืืจื ืืืืื ืฉืืฃ ืืฆืืืชื,
Rav Yehuda once took a garment, and out of anger, at least he was showing anger, he pulled out the thread and fell apart. So they should see that that he wants to get their attention. Rav Acha broke a kli, but he broke a broken kli. It was broken already, but he broke it more. ืจื ืฉืฉืช ืจืื ืื ืืืืชืื ืืืื ืืจืืฉื, he took a a a cup of of of vinegar, not vinegar, like the juice of the pickles, and he spilled it on his maid's head. That's allowed? Huh? That's so petty. He Cuz she wasn't listening. On his maid's head? Yeah. Serves her right! Rav Abba broke, there was like a cover to a jar, and he took and broke it. Why? Why not allowed to do it? To to have the people be afraid of him, so they'll listen to him. Some of these reach different people to do it at different points.
