Onion, ื ื—ืฉ, and the danger of its juice

Here. Beginning of the third perek. ืชื ื• ืจื‘ื ืŸ, the ืจื‘ื ืŸ, they learned. You shouldn't eat onions because of the ื ื—ืฉ. Now, it doesn't mean a snake. ื ื—ืฉ really means a snake. Here it means, yetzer hara. No. Yeah. But here it doesn't mean that. There's in this there is a certain sharpness in the onion. I mean obviously we don't ืคืกืงืŸ like that, but there is this ื ื—ืฉ, this. Rashi says, ืืจืก ืฉืจืฃ ื”ื‘ืฆืœ. There is the this ืฉืจืฃ, the the juice that's in the ื‘ืฆืœ, that's dangerous. So don't eat it. How odd that he should call it ื ื—ืฉ. What other things you could call it besides I don't know if it's even pronounced ื ื—ืฉ. Maybe it's ื ื—ื™ืจ, ืžื—ืฉ, I ื ื—ืฉ means ื ื™ื—ื•ืฉ? Bilaam Yeah, like ื ื—ืฉ. I don't know, but this is this is the tochen of it. Probably, just like a ื ื—ืฉ has ืืจืก, what do you call the venom? So this has some kind of venom. He drank some the other day. Huh? Almost. That was it. Here it says ื ื’ื•ื“. ืจืณ ื—ื ื™ื ื ื‘ืŸ ื“ื•ืกื, ืฉืื›ืœ ื—ืฆื™ ื‘ืฆืœ ื•ื—ืฆื™ ื ื—ืฉ ืฉื‘ื• He didn't eat it, he drank it. He ate half of an onion and he ate half of this this ืฉืจืฃ, this juice that's there, ื•ื—ืœื”, got sick, ื•ื ื˜ื” ืœืžื•ืช, and he was almost died, ื•ื‘ืงืฉื• ืขืœื™ื• ื—ื‘ื™ืจื™ื• ืจื—ืžื™ื, and his friends davened for his sake, for his health, ื•ื—ื™ื”, and he lived. Why did they put in so much effort to get him cured? ืžืคื ื™ ืฉื”ืฉืขื” ืฆืจื™ื›ื” ืœื•, the time he was needed. He's such a person that was needed for the generation. Yeah. How do you know what's in that ื ื—ืฉ? Oh, mistama not every onion and A certain type of onion. Rashi says it's the seeds that are wrapped around. Right, yeah, not the regular onion, yeah. It's, you'll see, it's like a part that sticks up like a ื ื—ืฉ. Yeah, it looks like a ื ื—ืฉ head, yeah, that's what it is.

Rabbahโ€™s question: Shehecheyanu on Roshโ€ฏHashanah & Yomโ€ฏKippur

ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื”, Rabbah said, ื›ื™ ื”ื•ื™ื ืŸ ื‘ื™ ืจื‘ ื”ื•ื ื, when I was by ืจื‘ ื”ื•ื ื, ืื™ื‘ืขื™ื ืœืŸ, he asked us a ืฉืืœื”, ืžื”ื• ืœืžื™ืžืจ ื–ืžืŸ ื‘ืจืืฉ ื”ืฉื ื” ื•ื‘ื™ื•ื ื”ื›ืคื•ืจื™ื? Do we say shehecheyanu on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? And this is the reason of the question: ื›ื™ื•ืŸ ื“ืžื–ืžืŸ ืœื–ืžืŸ ืืชื™, ืืžืจื™ื ืŸ? Since it comes from time to time, so we should say it. Any like mitzvah and anything that comes from time to time, you say Shehecheyanu. ืื• ื“ื™ืœืžื, or maybe ื›ื™ื•ืŸ ื“ืœื ืื™ืงืจื• ืจื’ืœื™ื, since it's not part of Yom Tov, it's not called ืจื’ืœ. There are only ืฉืœืฉ ืจื’ืœื™ื, only three: Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos. But this is not. ืœื ืืžืจื™ื ืŸ, maybe we don't say. So we asked the ืฉืืœื”, ืœื ื”ื•ื•ื” ื‘ื™ื“ื™ื”, he didn't know what to answer. ื›ื™ ืืชืื™ ื‘ื™ ืจื‘ ื™ื”ื•ื“ื”, when I came to ืจื‘ ื™ื”ื•ื“ื”, ืืžืจ, I said, ืื ื ืืงืจื ื—ื“ืชื ืื ื, so he said to us, ืื ื ืืงืจื ื—ื“ืชื ื ืžื™ ืืžื™ื ื ื–ืžืŸ. By me, I say Shehecheyanu even when I see a new melon, new season of the melon, of the fruit, I also say Shehecheyanu. So what's your question? If you say Shehecheyanu on Rosh Hashanah, even which comes from time to time, even on a fruit, like we do Shehecheyanu on ื‘ื•ืงืกืขืจ which have a ื˜ืขื ืงืœื•ืฉ, so it's simple, it comes from time to time. But and and on on Sunday they had a movie here that the that the Rebbe was uh with uh masa u'matan with the with the two head rabbis from Israel when they called those guys... What, Shehecheyanu in in Sefirah? Yeah, in Sefirah. But but... What was he talking about, just to have Shehecheyanu? Yeah, and see them... Oh, oh that, yeah, yeah. If they haven't seen them for 30 days. Nobody does that nowadays. He said, but the Rebbe said that you should do it. It's He didn't do it himself. He said that it's No, you can't... Lemaaseh, we don't do it, but the inyan is there. The fact that al pi halacha you have to do it, for some reason we don't, but the inyan is there. Like, ืœืžืฉืœ, you can't put on new you can't put on new clothes on Sefirah. What's the cheshbon? Because amal they used to make Shehecheyanu on new clothes. So we don't make Shehecheyanu on Sefirah, so you don't put on new clothes on Sefirah. ืื™ื™, we don't make Shehecheyanu anyway. Somebody still do it on a suit? I don't know, maybe by you, but we also don't wear. Can you buy a ื—ืœื™ืคื”, can you say it? No, you can't. You don't buy new clothes on Sefirah, and we don't make Shehecheyanu, even even a new talit that you get, some people say that, you know, a mitzvah... He was talking about meeting somebody after... Yeah, so I'm saying, and he said the same thing... And

Shehecheyanu for new fruits, clothes, and Sefirah customs

what if the other guy does not to have to... Yeah. [laughter] No, he said, and therefore, if one guy will make and one guy not, that's a No, he wanted to give a reason why we don't make. Yeah. Because amal it's not comfortable. It's a good sevara, it makes sense. But ื‘ืคื•ืขืœ ื•ื‘ื’ืฉืžื™ื•ืช, ื‘ืคื•ืขืœ, we don't make. And the Rebbe says, if you didn't see someone for 12 months, you make a mechayei hameitim? No, I mean, always... I don't know why, I used always say this, I don't know, some berachot had mazal, some berachot didn't have mazal. Now you call them up on the cell phone, that's why. That's why they... And before the cell phones, and and 20 years ago? But also, they didn't make it then. No, they didn't make it. Lightning... In other words, it's not it's not called mechayei hameitim if you talk to them. things, for lightning for thunder. It says, like, ื”ืจื•ืื” ื™ื ื”ื’ื“ื•ืœ, when you see the ocean, you have to make a berachah. If you didn't see it for 30 days, we don't. Why not? Look, some berachot had mazal, some berachot didn't have mazal. ื™ื ื”ื’ื“ื•ืœ is Mediterranean. Some hold Some hold the Mediterranean, yeah, some think it means every ocean. Like going to the ืื•ื”ืœ. Ah, there there we make. Not the ืื•ื”ืœ, any ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืงื‘ืจื•ืช if you didn't see it in... ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืงื‘ืจื•ืช for thirty days, you start off the berachah, and that we do, you make that berachah. For some reason, shehecheyanu? Shehecheyanu? Not in not in ื—ื•ืฅ ืžืŸ ื”ืžื™ืœื ืœืฉื•ืŸ, that's how they say it. Even when you go to the ืื•ื”ืœ, right? Is it within the thirty? If you weren't there thirty days? Any, any ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืงื‘ืจื•ืช, that's what it says.

Counting the Omer: daily bracha controversy

I don't know why we make on on Sefirat HaOmer every night, it's only one berachah. All the ืžื•ื ื™ ื”ืžืฆื•ืช, it's only counted as one mitzvah. Mitzvah, ืžืฆื•ืช ืกืคื™ืจืช ื”ืขื•ืžืจ, why are you making a berachah every every time you do it? That's, it's a machloket, no? And we do it, we make a berachah every single night. Even one, look in the Rambam, look in the Sefer HaMitzvot. No, no, that's a peshat. It's a big machloket in the ืจืืฉื•ื ื™ื whether it's, every night it's a separate mitzvah or not. And the she'eilah is, according to the ืฉื™ื˜ื” that hold it's all one mitzvah, so there's two she'elot. First of all, why do we make a berachah every day? And the second thing is, how could we make a berachah, if it's all one mitzvah, what happens if next week I'm going to forget? If I forgot already, we don't make a berachah. But I, I never know, I might forget next week, so how do I make a berachah now? And if I forget some time later, the whole mitzvah is going to be ื‘ื˜ืœ, so I'm making a bracha levatalah, how can I do it? So the Rebbe has a chiddush ื ืคืœื peshat in this in the shita that nobody holds that it's one mitzvah only. He learns a different peshat. The peshat is like this, it's every day is a separate mitzvah. The she'eilah, what is the mitzvah? The mitzvah is I should count the sixth day. And the sixth cannot come after the fifth, unless it's after the fifth. So if I skip a day, that's why I don't make a bracha, not because I messed up the mitzvah. I don't make a bracha because how can I count six if I didn't count five? But till then, every day is, every no, but be'etzem everyone holds every day is a mitzvah. The she'eilah, what is the peshat? Is it all one big hemshech or every day for itself. You could say, today is the sixth day of sefirah, so I have a mitzvah to count today's day. Separate. Yeah, has nothing to do with yesterday, every day is a separate mitzvah. Or the peshat is, it's all one big hemshech. That's the peshat. Every day is a separate mitzvah, but it's all one big hemshech. That's the Rebbe's Would you say one is, really one is Not only separate, one nekudah or a different nekudah, that yeah, not No, that's what I'm saying. No. It's all one big nekudah or Last week's Kovetz Pilpul HaBochurim, you brought this, this re'ayah from the Rebbe with a big chiddush, right? Well, I don't remember that, but could be, no, I don't remember every That, that peshat, it could be, I tell you, honestly, I don't remember that. Last year with this, and this is also, guess where, which sichah, it's ื—ืœืง ืืณ. ื—ืœืง ืืณ sichot, which there you don't have these ืœื•ืžื“ื™ืฉืข ืขื ื™ื ื™ื. But there he has this chiddush, it's a pele. According to the Rebbe, if you forgot You still, yeah, because you can't count. You continue? No, yeah, without a bracha. Without a bracha. Right, because according to one shita, you can't count today. Why? Because today is a hemshech to yesterday, if there was no yesterday, there's no today. But it's not a pshat that it's all one big mitzvah that as long as you didn't do the whole thing you're not mekayem the mitzvah. Then you have a good kashya, how can you make a bracha every day? So the pshat is every day is a separate mitzvah, but the mitzvah is to be mamshich yesterday's. Which sichah is it? What? Yeah. One thing is clear: if you know Likkutei Sichos, you're a big lamdan. Not only in Chassidus and in ื”ืฉืงืคื”, in ื ื’ืœื” ืคืฉื•ื˜, you're a big lamdan, 'cause such ืขื ื™ื ื™ื flow through there. Okay. Anyway, so he said, he asked him, \"Do you make Shehecheyanu Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?\" So he said, \"I make Shehecheyanu even on, on a melon that grows.\" ืืžืจ ืœื•, he says, shtus! ื›ื™ ืงืžื™ื‘ืขื™ื ืœื™, I'm not asking you if you're allowed to. All Shehecheyanu, the Rebbe actually mentioned it in that video that we saw, that Shehecheyanu is one of those easier brachot, it's very seldom to be a bracha levatalah. 'Cause sof kol sof what's Shehecheyanu? A bracha for ืฉืžื—ืช ื”ืœื‘. If I'm happy about it, so if I make a, it can't be a bracha levatalah really. So he said to him, \"I know you could make. My she'eilah was ื›ื™ ืงืžื™ื‘ืขื™ื ืœื™ื” ื—ื•ื‘ื” ืžืื™. Is it a chovah? On Yom Tov, ืจื’ืœื™ื, it's a chovah to say Shehecheyanu. Is it an obligation to say on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?\" What about this rabbi, Amnon Yitzchak? He goes around being mekarev, making all these baalei teshuva. He puts on tzitzis, and he makes them, makes them make a Shehecheyanu when they put that, put that on? Some people still do. Even today some people make Shehecheyanu still on, on a new pair of tzitzis, on a new tallis, on a new pair of tefillin, on these things. I'd say because it's the first time we're doing it, so I didn't make a Shehecheyanu the first time I did it, either. What? Not when I put on tzitzis the first time, either. That's why I'm trying to ask, where does he get it from? No, according to our shita, no. It's a ื‘ื’ื“ ื—ื“ืฉ. A ื‘ื’ื“ ื—ื“ืฉ, you make Shehecheyanu. ืืœื ืžืื™, by us nowadays, we don't feel it so, but it could be. We definitely use it as a tziruf, a ื‘ื’ื“ ื—ื“ืฉ. Remember by ื‘ืจื›ืช ื”ื—ืžื”, not the, the last ื‘ืจื›ืช ื”ื—ืžื”, the Rebbe spoke about it, and there was a whole everyone had a whole ื•ื™ื›ื•ื— should you make Shehecheyanu, not say Shehecheyanu. And finally, Shabbos before ื‘ืจื›ืช ื”ื—ืžื”, the Rebbe spoke about it, and the Rebbe said he holds you should make Shehecheyanu, but to be ื™ื•ืฆื ืœื›ืœ ื”ื“ืขื•ืช, you should eat a ืคืจื™ ื—ื“ืฉ. Right, remember? He spoke about it. Okay. Came, what happened? Came the Pesach, when they made ื‘ืจื›ืช ื”ื—ืžื”, then they gave out fruits to everybody to make Shehecheyanu. The Rebbe made Shehecheyanu and did not take, did not eat a fruit. So someone wrote in the ื”ืขืจื•ืช in the ืงื•ื‘ืฅ that they gave out a ืกื™ืžืŸ that the ืจื‘ื™ ืกื•ืฃ ื›ืœ ืกื•ืฃ decided that you don't even need no fruit. So the Rebbe farbrengen spoke about it, said, this just shows to see that you can't, you can't come with, with, with ื”ืฉืขืจื•ืช. The ื”ืฉืขืจื” was that I decided that, that you don't need a new fruit, and I made Shehecheyanu. You know why I didn't eat a fruit? Because I put on a new ืกื™ืจื˜ื•ืง. He said, you can never, and he showed, you see, you could never know. I put on a new ืกื™ืจื˜ื•ืง. So now, a ื’ื for a new ืกื™ืจื˜ื•ืง the Rebbe, we don't make Shehecheyanu in our beged. It's true. But since that anyway you want to make shehecheyanu for the ื‘ืจื›ืช ื”ื—ืžื” itself, meimela, so for a ืฆื™ืจื•ืฃ we use it. So he used a new sirtuk, you know, I put on a new sirtuk. That's why you're supposed to put for the second day Rosh Hashanah. Yeah, you take a new beged. And even though it's a beged that normally you don't make shehecheyanu for, so I'll take a tie, cuz it's zicher gornisht mit gornisht. The Rebbe took a scarf. He used to put on a new silk scarf every ืจืืฉ, second day Rosh Hashanah. And anyway, a new silk scarf you make shehecheyanu, but a ืฆื™ืจื•ืฃ, cuz the ื“ื™ืŸ is that if you don't have a could be anything, it could be a, it could be a No, you don't have to have something yakar. I know, but a new beged, it could be a, it doesn't have to be like, it could be No, be'emet, if a regular beged, no, no one thinks that if you put on a new shirt to make shehecheyanu, even though those that do make. No, it has to be chashuv, like a suit, or something that you make. Shoes, it's known, you don't make shehecheyanu. On shoes you don't make shehecheyanu. I hold, I hold that that when Syms was in, when Syms was in business, you didn't have to make a shehecheyanu. Now I have to make shehecheyanu. Before they closed down, I I didn't Cuz now it's chashuv, now it's expensive! What's that? Syms closed, now it's expensive. They all were able to get a suit, now I can't get a suit. Yeah, you got to pay more for it. Kind of like that song, they used to sing: Syms, Shalom Aleichem. Huh? Yeah. Anyway, so ืืžืจ ืœื™ื”, so he said to him like this: You ask me must we make a shehecheyanu on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur. He said, ืจื‘ ื•ืฉืžื•ืืœ ื“ืืžืจื™ ืชืจื•ื•ื™ื™ื”ื•, ืจื‘ and ืฉืžื•ืืœ hold ืื™ืŸ ืื•ืžืจ ื–ืžืŸ ืืœื ื‘ืฉืœืฉ ืจื’ืœื™ื. They hold that you only make it only on three ื™ืžื™ื ื˜ื•ื‘ื™ื and not on ืจืืฉ ื”ืฉื ื”, ื™ื•ื ื›ื™ืคื•ืจ. ืžืชื™ื‘, the Gemara asks a kashya, there's a pasuk in Kohelet says like this: ืชืŸ ื—ืœืง ืœืฉื‘ืขื” ื•ื’ื ืœืฉืžื•ื ื”. Give a part of seven, cuz like out of every seven there is a special day, a special part, and out of every eight there's a special part. Now,

Seven, eight, and special days: Gemara debates

what's the seven and what's the eight? Seven means seven days of the week, and there's one of the seven is special, Shabbos. There are eight days from when you're born till milah, and the eighth day is a special day. That's one peshat. And ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื”ื•ืฉืข ืื•ืžืจ, no, ื–ื™ืŸ, ืืœื• ื–ื™ืŸ ื™ืžื™ ืคืกื—. Seven goes on the seven days of ืคืกื—, and ื—ืช, ืืœื• ื—ืช ื™ืžื™ ื”ื—ื’. Seven days of ืกื•ื›ื•ืช, eight days of ืกื•ื›ื•ืช. ื•ื›ืฉื”ื•ื ืื•ืžืจ, since it says: ื•ื’ื ืœืฉืžื•ื ื”, ืœืจื‘ื•ืช, it comes to, to add Atzeret, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur. ืžืื™ ืœืื•, don't you think what does it mean to add ืœื’ื‘ื™ what? ืœื–ืžืŸ, that you say ืฉื”ื—ื™ื™ื ื•. So the Gemara says, no re'aya, maybe no, ืœื‘ืจื›ื”. Beracha means you make a beracha in the Kiddush, you make the beracha for the Yom Tov, but there's no re'aya with shehecheyanu. But lehalacha we do make shehecheyanu, and we have to make shehecheyanu on on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and also on... The second day Rosh Hashanah is the she'elah if it's, how about They didn't even mention here Atzeret... But he doesn't, but he doesn't mention the inyan of ืกืคืจื™ ื—ื™ื™ื ื•ืกืคืจื™ ืžืชื™ื ืคืชื•ื—ื™ื ืœืคื ื™ืš like he does by Hallel. Yeah. Huh? Why doesn't he mention, like by Hallel, the kasha by Hallel is ืกืคืจื™ ื—ื™ื™ื ื•ืกืคืจื™ ืžืชื™ื ืคืชื•ื—ื™ื ืœืคื ื™ืš, and that's the reason not to make shehecheyanu? Oh, so we don't say Hallel. So we don't say Hallel. Yeah, the words, that's Hallel only. Shehecheyanu you make when you're when you're full, when you're full of, when you're full of mora you make shehecheyanu? Yeah, shehecheyanu is only when you're full of simcha. Yeah, but that's the thing, by Rosh Hashanah Cuz it's cuz it's, it says the lashon: ื’ื™ืœื• ื‘ืจืขื“ื”. Cuz it says to be, cuz it says you should have ืจืขื“ื”, but ื’ื™ืœื• ื‘ืจืขื“ื”. He said one day out of seven and one day out of eight. That's what we added, no, that's that's that's... Oh, he didn't add it, who's mentioned here? Atzeres. Could be Atzeres includes that also. Shemini Atzeres. Atzeres means Shavuos. Could be Atzeres means, maybe, I don't know, Atzeres also. I don't know, I just I just read today, a vort that mentioned ืกืคืจื™ ื—ื™ื™ื ื•ืกืคืจื™ ืžืชื™ื ืคืชื•ื—ื™ื, so you don't say Hallel. So punkt today, mamash two hours ago, I was reading a sefer, it was a story of somebody, who was it? One of the gedolim, ืจ' Shlomo Kluger? Somebody walked into a house, I don't remember who, somebody walked into, modern rav, a rabbi. They have modern rabbanim in the time...? Yeah, yeah, they had, already they started, you know, the ืžืฉื›ื™ืœื™ื. So he was looking, and he walked in, he was punkt looking a book, this ื”ืฉืงืคื” books which is which is ืืคื™ืงื•ืจืกื•ืช, and it was Rosh Chodesh. He was a frum guy, but he... So maybe it was Rav Yisrael Salanter, I forgot already, actually a ืœื™ื˜ื•ื•ื™ืฉืขืจ ืกืคืจ, so I don't know, it's one of these... So he says to him: ืฉืœื•ื ืขืœื™ื›ื. He says, did you say Hallel today? So the rabbi says sure, it's Rosh Chodesh today. Says, yeah, but I see you have ืกืคืจื™ ื—ื™ื™ื ื•ืกืคืจื™ ืžืชื™ื ืคืชื•ื—ื™ื ืœืคื ื™ืš, so you can't say Hallel. Yeah, ื–ืื’ื˜ ื“ื™ ื’ืžืจื ืื–ื•ื™, he doesn't bring the whole Gemara from before, but he mentions here that the Gemara has a whole pilpul, a whole shakla vetarya discussion that if on Erev Shabbos, if you fast, should you be mashlim? Meaning should you fast the whole day? And the same goes on also, I think, on on Tisha B'Av Tisha B'Av that is a ื ื“ื—ื” on Sunday. Do you have to fast the whole day or not, if it's not the real day? Anyway, there's a discussion, and Rabban Gamliel says that you do not finish the whole day. So the Gemara says, ืชื ื™ื, said in the braisa, ืœืื—ืจ ืคื˜ื™ืจืชื• ืฉืœ Rabban Gamliel, after Rabban Gamliel passed away, ื ื›ื ืก ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื”ื•ืฉืข ืœื”ืคืจ ืืช ื“ื‘ืจื™ื•. So you ask, Rabbi Yehoshua came in, I guess yeshiva, now he wants to shlog him up and pasken not like Rabban Gamliel. ืขืžื“ ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื•ื—ื ืŸ ื‘ืŸ ื ื•ืจื™ ืขืœ ืจื’ืœื™ื•, ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื•ื—ื ืŸ ื‘ืŸ ื ื•ืจื™ got up, ื•ืืžืจ, he says, ื—ื–ื™ ืื ื, I see that ื‘ืชืจ ืจื™ืฉื ื’ื•ืคื ืื–ื™ืœ, the body follows the head. And ื›ืœ ื™ืžื™ื• ืฉืœ ืจื‘ืŸ ื’ืžืœื™ืืœ ืงื‘ืขื ื• ื”ืœื›ื” ื›ืžื•ืชื•, all the years of Rabban Gamliel we pasken'd like him and he's the head, ืขื›ืฉื™ื• ืืชื ืžื‘ืงืฉ ืœื‘ื˜ืœ ื“ื‘ืจื™ื•? Now you want to mevatel it? We're not listening to you. ืฉื›ื‘ืจ ื ืงื‘ืข ื”ืœื›ื” ื›ืจื‘ืŸ ื’ืžืœื™ืืœ, the halacha is like Rabban Gamliel, and mimela you don't have to be mashlim. ื•ืœื ื”ื™ื” ืื“ื ืฉืขืจืขืจ ื“ื‘ืจ ื›ืœื•ื, and no one argued with him. That's how it was. But the Gemara continues that In Rabban Gamliel's generation, they pasken'd like him. In Rabbi Yosi's generation, they did like Rabbi Yosi, who says we are mashlim. Lemaaseh we are mashlim, we do finish the whole day. And in Rabban Gamliel's times they did like Rabban Gamliel? Vehatania, it says in a beraita, ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ืืœืขื–ืจ ื‘ืจื‘ื™ ืฆื“ื•ืง, ืจื‘ื™ ืืœืขื–ืจ ื‘ืจื‘ื™ ืฆื“ื•ืง said, ืื ื™ ืžื‘ื ื™ ืกื ืื” ื‘ืŸ ื‘ื ื™ืžื™ืŸ, I'm from the family of Sana ben Binyamin. Now we know that Mishnah in Taanit that different families donated wood for the mizbeach, for the Beit Hamikdash, different days of the year, and that day that they did did it was their Yom Tov. So he says, I'm from that family.

Tishaโ€ฏBโ€™Av on Shabbat and family sacrificial customs

ืคืขื ืื—ืช ื—ืœ ืชืฉืขื” ื‘ืื‘ ืœื”ื™ื•ืช ื‘ืฉื‘ืช, once happened Tisha B'Av came out on ืฉื‘ืช, ื•ื“ื—ื™ื ื•ื”ื• ืœืื—ืจ ื”ืฉื‘ืช, and they pushed it off for Sunday. And that Sunday was the day that Sana ben Binyamin brought their ืงืจื‘ืŸ, brought the ืขืฆื™ื, and it was their ื™ื•ื ื˜ื•ื‘. ื•ื”ืชืขื ื™ื ื• ื‘ื•, we fasted, ื•ืœื ื”ืฉืœืžื ื•, we didn't finish it. Why? ืžืคื ื™ ืฉื™ื•ื ื˜ื•ื‘ ืฉืœื ื• ื”ื™ื”, it was our Yom Tov. Is mashma, the taam is, the reason why they didn't finish it, because it's their Yom Tov. Otherwise, they would finish it. ืื™ ืจื‘ืŸ ื’ืžืœื™ืืœ says you don't? So that's a re'ayah, the Gemara says, that even ื‘ื—ื™ื™ื• of Rabban Gamliel, not everyone agreed agreed to Rabban Gamliel. Not everyone ืคืกืงื 'ื“ like that. But it's the same sevara as Rabban Gamliel, what do you mean? He said you don't finish it if it's ืขืจื‘ ืฉื‘ืช. And also ืชืฉืขื” ื‘ืื‘ ื ื“ื—ื”. What about when we had a brit on a fast day? So the the din is that ื‘ืขืœื™ ื‘ืจื™ืช could eat. Yeah. Yeah, but we don't do it. Lemaaseh no one does it, no? Even if it's on Tisha B'Av? Regular Tisha B'Av, not No one does it, no? Huh? I told you to? To fast? To not fast, I told you. But we should eat before the end of the day, and then... That's the din. But lemaaseh... Yeah, I don't remember that. I don't remember, because they write now, I saw Nitei Gavriel, he writes that achshav, even though al pi din there is no she'elot and you're allowed to do it, and you should do it, I See, everything depends. Maybe you asked me, \"Am I allowed to do it?\" I said, \"Sure.\" What? That we are mashlim a That's what you can say. Depends on whatever, you know, expands your way if Yeah. That's what I'm saying. I don't remember that, because I I'm surprised. If I did say it, I'm surprised, but there's nothing wrong if I said, but I'm surprised. We were talking and I said, \"You could do it. There's no problem, you could do it.\" ืœืžืขืฉื”, ื“ืืก ื˜ื•ื˜ ืžืขืŸ ื“ืืก ื ื™ืฉื˜. That's just... Even for the ืื‘ื™ ื”ื‘ืŸ? The true The ื‘ืขืœื™ ื‘ืจื™ืช, the ืื‘ื™ ื”ื‘ืŸ and the ืกื ื“ืง. On a ื ื“ื—ื”, you mean? I Yeah, and they could break the fast. But the truth is, on some fasts, be'emet you could even break on the regular day. The ื‘ืขืœื™ ื‘ืจื™ืช themselves. But it's... I only heard about by ื ื“ื—ื”. By ื ื“ื—ื” is even Tisha B'Av, I think. Even Tisha B'Av. But others is It's ื ื“ื—ื”. Like, I think, in other ืชืขื ื™ืชื™ื even on the ืชืขื ื™ืช itself.

When Fast Days Land on Shabbat

Asarah B'Tevet is never on a Sunday. No, Shivah Asar b'Tammuz is sometimes on a Sunday. Asarah B'Tevet is never on a Sunday. What? Asarah B'Tevet is on a Friday. Abudraham holds Asarah B'Tevet would come out on Shabbos, you'd have to fast on Shabbos. Because the pasuk says, ื‘ืขืฆื ื”ื™ื•ื ื”ื–ื”, like Yom Kippur. And we fast on Shabbos. And by Asarah B'Tevet it says, So ื‘ืขืฆื ื’ื–ื™ืจื” ืฉื•ื”, you mean Abudraham says clearly, had it can't come out on ืฉื‘ืช ืœืžืขืฉื”. But we see on Friday, it does come out, and we fast. Other ืชืขื ื™ืชื™ื we don't fast. We fast Asarah B'Tevet into Shabbos. And we fast into Shabbos, we don't eat until we make... Sure, it's very often. We just had it, what, two years ago? Yeah, we had all Yeah, and all she'elot like, can we make kiddush at 6:00 or 7:00? Look at that. Shivah Asar b'Tammuz is a makor from the de'oraita? De'oraita? That's from the navi. No, because they broke the luchot. Yeah, but it's a ma'aseh that happened, but it's not the the Torah. Torah doesn't mention about fasting, you know. Asarah B'Tevet is a... Asarah B'Tevet is that Rashi holds not that Rashi holds that Asarah B'Tevet could be on Shabbos, he wouldn't fast. Rashi in Masechet Ta'anit. It's not the Gemara, it's the ื–ื• ื’ืžืจื with the Tosafot on heit, and we can do ืžืฉืคื—ื”, what says Gemara in the whole... In Ta'anit, yeah. Ta'anit, yeah, yeah. Anyway, it began even then there's, yeah. You know what? So, what's what's the whole big ื“ื™ืงืข ื™ื•ื ื˜ื•ื‘? Where Yom Tov is that you bring the wood to help another Yid. It's not for yourself, it's to help another Yid there. And it's especially those that brought after Chamisha Asar b'Av, it's it's mamash helping, because after Chamisha Asar b'Av you can't cut the wood anymore. So they have to prepare before. So m'meila if there's something that's not available and you go ahead and you give it. So, everyone shared their day. Sometimes they did. Yeah.

Three Factors That Lead One Away From Da'at

There are three things that make a person go crazy. I mean, it goes against his da'at and ืขืœ ื“ืขืช ืงื•ื ื•. You know, you go off your mind, off your rocker, off your mind. Yeah, my grandson made a speech at the bar mitzvah. He's a lefty, so his whole his whole pilpul was about lefties, part of his speech. That the the scientists know that if you're right-side your right side controls your left side. Right. And if you're in the the left side controls... Is the... lefty? Not lately, but he's funny about... No, no. So, he says, so it comes out from here that the only one that is in his right mind is a lefty. A lefty can dial like a lefty. Huh? He can write like a lefty. Yeah. No she'eilah. If you do everything with your right and just write with your left, that's a big problem. I'm saying, in early years, they used to push you... Stop doing it. They stopped doing it. Psychologists say it's not good, and the Rebbe also writes... Even though it's a mum. A lefty is a mum. A kohen lefty is a ba'al mum. By a kohen. A kohen lefty is a ba'al mum? Yeah, he couldn't do the avodah with the left. You have the Rambam. The Rambam lists the mumim, he's a lefty. What if he's not a kohen? Correct. No, it's a mum anyway, but a mum doesn't make a difference. No, it's a mum. Al achat kama v'chama by a kohen, it's nafka mina. If he's not a kohen, big deal, so you have a mum. When Mashiach comes, are all the mumim going to go away? Mistama, yeah. So, all the lefties will become righties. They're gonna have to buy new tefillin? You used to tell me by Har Sinai all all the lefties turned into righties? I would imagine so. I imagine so, yes. Yeah? If all the sick people got cured, why wouldn't... Yeah. Can tease them. Go back to Har Sinai. Anyway, so what makes a person go away from his mind and the daat of the Eibershter? ืืœื• ื”ืŸ, ืขื•ื‘ื“ื™ ื›ื•ื›ื‘ื™ื, ื’ื•ื™ื. Get tzarot from the goyim. ืจื•ื— ืจืขื”, you know, crazy, you know, something like ืžืฉื•ื’ืขืช come in your mind, or a ืฉื“ some people learn pshat. ื•ื“ืงื“ื•ืงื™ ืขื ื™ื•ืช, if you're very poor. Lamai nafka mina? Nafka mina, we made a klal, these three, but what about it? So, mimela, what's halacha? ื“ืงื“ื•ืงื™ ืขื ื™ื•ืช, you think they think they're poor? They think they're poor. That's already a pshat. You don't see they don't... No, that's the pshat. Because you can have some people who are poor and they're not medakdek, they behave like not, that's the maalah. But ื“ืงื“ื•ืงื™ ืขื ื™ื•ืช, they're medakdek, they're kind of like everything, they're so ืฆืžืฆื•ื, they're so... they're so... Constipated. Yeah. Yeah. Lamai nafka mina? ื’ืžืจื, ืœืžื™ื‘ืขื™ ืขืœื™ื™ื”ื• ืจื—ืžื™. You see, the guy got that, you've got to daven for the guy, the guy needs help. ืฉืœื•ืฉื” ืื™ืŸ ืจื•ืื™ื ืคื ื™ ื’ื™ื”ื ื. Three people don't see the Gehinnom. ืืœื• ื”ืŸ, ื“ืงื“ื•ืงื™ ืขื ื™ื•ืช, someone who is poor and, mimela, he has his Gehinnom in this world. ื—ื•ืœื™ ืžืขื™ื™ื, a person that has stomach problems. ื•ื”ืจืฉื•ืช. Rashi says ืจืฉื•ืช means someone who owes a lot of money to a lot of people. ื•ื™ืฉ ืื•ืžืจื™ื ืืฃ ืžื™ ืฉื™ืฉ ืœื• ืืฉื” ืจืขื”. You have a bad wife, he also has the Gehinnom in this world. Or he said you don't go to Gehinnom, you go somewhere else. ื•ืื™ื“ืš, how come the other one didn't count ืืฉื” ืจืขื”? Because he says ืืฉื” ืจืขื”, ืžืฆื•ื” ืœื’ืจืฉื”. If it's that bad, divorce her. So he won't... So, farkert, there's a mitzvah here. ื•ืื™ื“ืš? How come he doesn't hold of it? He says, you're right, you could divorce her, but Sometimes the ื›ืชื•ื‘ื” is very big, and he can't, so we can't divorce. ืื™ ื ืžื™ ื™ืฉ ืœื• ื‘ื ื™ื ืžืžื ื”, and he has children, and he cannot ืœื’ืจืฉื”. Lemai nafka mina? What's nafka mina to know that these people don't see the Gehinnom? ืœืงื‘ื•ืœื™ ืžืื”ื‘ื”. You should accept it b'ahava, because if you know that this is gonna, these yisurim, these things, will help you stay away from Gehinnom, so you mekabel it with a different with a feeling.

Sudden Deaths and Preparing Shrouds

ืฉืœื•ืฉื” ืžืชื™ื ื›ืฉื”ื ืžืกืคืจื™ื, three people could die even while they're talking, which means suddenly. ืืœื• ื”ืŸ, ื—ื•ืœื™ ืžืขื™ื™ื, a person that has stomach problems, ื—ื™ื”, a woman who gives birth, ื•ื”ื“ืจื•ืงืŸ... has this sickness in the throat. What's it called in English? What? Asthma? No, no, ื”ื“ืจื•ืงืŸ, there is a What is it in English? In English, whooping cough? Swelling of the stomach. No, that's the second one. And what's the third? sickness is prominent symptom of swelling of the stomach. No, ื—ื•ืœื™ ื”ืคื”. No, it's the mouth. Rashi says it's a sickness in the throat, in the mouth. Dropsy is medical. Lemai nafka mina? Nafka mina these people could die suddenly, we should always have your tachrichin prepared.
