Intro: Rebbeโ€™s maamar and the Mishnah overview

skipped all this whole before, huh? So the Rebbe explained, explained, brought the maamar, this biur of the Tzemach Tzedek and he said over, he made a siyum on the masechta at the end, and then he explained the pshat based on the Tzemach Tzedek of this ืžืฉื ื”, ื”ื‘ื™ืช ื•ื”ืขืœื™ื”. A very geshmacke inyan the way he explained. I'll read just the beginning of the Mishnah. ื”ื‘ื™ืช Actually, it's the last perek, it's called ื”ื‘ื™ืช ื•ื”ืขืœื™ื”. ื”ื‘ื™ืช ื•ื”ืขืœื™ื” ืฉืœ ืฉื ื™ื, if you have a house with a second floor and belongs to two separate people, one person lives in the bottom, one person lives on top. ืฉื ืคืœื•, fell, so the top fell, the bottom fell. ืืžืจ ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” ืœื‘ืขืœ ื”ื‘ื™ืช ืœื‘ื ื•ืช, so the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื”, the one from the second floor says to the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ื‘ื™ืช on the bottom floor, I want to rebuild my second floor, but I can't rebuild my second floor unless you rebuild your floor. So I'm asking you, build your floor, and I'll build on top. ื•ื”ื•ื ืื™ื ื• ืจื•ืฆื” ืœื‘ื ื•ืช, what happens if the top guy doesn't want the bottom guy doesn't want to build? ื”ืจื™ ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” ื‘ื•ื ื” ืืช ื”ื‘ื™ืช ื•ื“ืจ ื‘ืชื•ื›ื•. So the one from the top has a right to build the bottom floor and move in, and not let the other guy move in. And he has where to live. Because the reason he doesn't have the apartment on top because the guy doesn't want to build it, so he'll build the bottom and moves in. ืขื“ ืฉื™ืชืŸ ืœื• ื™ืฆื™ืื•ืชื™ื•, until the top guy the bottom guy pays his expenses, oh, you paid for the building I built for you, I'll move out and then he builds the top and he moves in. This is the Mishnah. More opinions, but the nogea is this Mishnah. So the Rebbe says like this, when we say the word bayit, what do we think of right away? ื”ื‘ื™ืช, Beis Hamikdash. So we have the Beis Hamikdash. The Beis Hamikdash has an aliyah, the Beis Hamikdash has a second floor. What's the second floor? You have ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื” and you have ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื”. The Beis Hamikdash down here and you have the Beis Hamikdash up there, or the lashon is ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื” and ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื”. You have Yerushalayim here, and Yerushalayim up there. Now, we know that the

Yerushalayimโ€™s two levels and the role of yirat shamayim

only reason the Aibershter is the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื”, why the Aibershter finds Himself in the Yerushalayim in the Beis Hamikdash up there, is because we are in the Beis Hamikdash down here. The Midrash says it, ื—ื–ืดืœ say, ื ืฉื‘ืข ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื”ื•ื, ื”ืฉื swore, ืฉืœื ื™ื›ื ืก ืœื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื”, if not for the ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”, ืขื“ ืฉื™ื‘ื ื” ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”. He's not going to go into the ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื” unless ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”, which is exactly like the ื’ืฉืžื™ื•ืชื“ื™ืงืข house. The guy on top can't move into his house unless there's a house on the bottom. If there's no house on the bottom, he can't move in the top. In the Beis Hamikdash, it's the same thing. The Eibershter says I'm not going to move in, I cannot move into the second floor, into the Beis Hamikdash above unless there is a ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”. So normally, there is a ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”. How is there a ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”? When the bottom person lives there and built it. The person builds the bottom floor, so then then you can have the second floor. How do you build the bottom floor? How do you build the Beis Hamikdash down here? Says you pay ื™ืฆื™ืื•ืช, but you have to pay the expenses. What are the expenses? So the expenses is yirat shamayim. That's why it's called Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim comes from the two words, Tosafot says, ื™ืจืื” ืฉืœื. Yirah from Hashem, ืฉืœื means complete, complete yirat shamayim. Actually, it's interesting, the Rebbe doesn't say it in this sichah, but in a different place the Rebbe says that the word Yerushalayim in Tanach most of the time, most, and in davenen also, doesn't have a ื™ื•ืดื“ at the end. Strange, nobody even notices it. We read it Yerushalayim, give a look in Siddur, there is no ื™ื•ืดื“. There's a ื—ื™ืจื™ืง without a ื™ื•ืดื“. So really, it's Yerushalayim because the word ืฉืœื means complete, without a ื™ื•ืดื“. ื™ืจืื” ืฉืœื means complete yirah. And that was the whole purpose of Yerushalayim and the whole purpose of the Beis Hamikdash, this Yerushalayim.

Purpose of ma'aser sheni and its link to Jerusalem

Tosafot brings a Sifrei, why was there a ื“ื™ืŸ of ืžืขืฉืจ ืฉื ื™, that every year you have to take off ืžืขืฉืจ ืฉื ื™, and what did you do with it? Nothing, you had to take it Yerushalayim and eat it there ื‘ื˜ื”ืจื”. Why did the Eibershter give such a mitzvah? Milsa ืžืขืฉืจ ืจืืฉื•ืŸ you give away to the Levi, ืžืขืฉืจ ืขื ื™ you give to the poor, what's ืžืขืฉืจ ืฉื ื™? The Eibershter wanted that the Yidden should every year for a few weeks spend in Yerushalayim, just spend it there. So you come to Yerushalayim and you see the Beit HaMikdash, and you see the Kohanim, and you see the ืœื•ื™ื, ื›ื”ื ื™ื ื‘ืขื‘ื•ื“ืชื ื•ืœื•ื™ื ื‘ื“ื•ื›ื ื ื•ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื‘ืžืขืžื“ื, gives you yirat Shamayim just being there. So Yerushalayim is yirat Shamayim. So the Beit HaMikdash and Yerushalayim is built by our yirat Shamayim. And if we built the bottom floor, the Beit HaMikdash on the bottom through yirat Shamayim, the Eibershter says, then I have the second floor. Because if you have the ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”, ื ืฉื‘ืข ื”ืงื“ื•ืฉ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื”ื•ื that if you don't have the ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”, I won't go in ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื”, but if you have it, I'll go in. But this is the way it's normal how it should be. ื–ืื’ื˜ the ืžืฉื ื” ื”ื‘ื™ืช ื•ื”ืขืœื™ื” ืฉืœ ืฉื ื™ื, you have the ื‘ื™ืช, the Beit HaMikdash, and you have the aliyah, and belongs to two, the bottom belongs to us, the top belongs to the Eibershter, ืฉื ืคืœื•, it fell, the ื—ื•ืจื‘ืŸ ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ. Now we have a problem. ืืžืจ ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” ืœื‘ืขืœ ื”ื‘ื™ืช, comes the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื”, the Eibershter from the second floor, the Eibershter from ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื”, says to the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ื‘ื™ืช from the bottom floor, he says, ืœื‘ื ื•ืช. I want you to build it. The Eibershter says, I want you to build it. Why? I can't go into my aliyah, I can't go into ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžืขืœื” unless you build ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ืฉืœ ืžื˜ื”. And he wants him to build it. ื•ื”ื•ื ืื™ื ื• ืจื•ืฆื” ืœื‘ื ื•ืช. He doesn't want to build. We got a problem. We're not ready. We're not ready to to build it. So what happens?

Mishnahโ€™s ruling when the upperโ€‘floor owner builds

What does the Mishnah say? ื”ืจื™ ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” ื‘ื•ื ื” ืืช ื”ื‘ื™ืช ื•ื“ืจ ื‘ืชื•ื›ื•. That means like this: the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” builds the bottom floor, and he moves in, but he doesn't let the bottom guy move in. So would this mean that the Eibershter will finally decide, and the Eibershter is going to say, I'm going to I'm going to build the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ, which means I'm going to do things because it says like this: ื–ื›ื• ืื—ื™ืฉื ื”. The pasuk says Mashiach will come, the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ will be built. ื–ื›ื•, it says ื‘ืขืชื” ืื—ื™ืฉื ื”. It'll happen in the in its time. ืื—ื™ืฉื ื” means fast. And the Gemara says, what does it mean? Will it be soon or in its time? ื–ื›ื•, if they're zocheh, then it's ืื—ื™ืฉื ื”, it's fast. ืœื ื–ื›ื•, ื‘ืขืชื”. So when there comes a time, the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ has to be built, there is no question about it. So the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื”, what is he going to do? The ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” is going to say, comes no choice, comes the time, I'm going to have to get in, so I'm going to build the bottom, I'm going to build the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ. It'll be ื‘ืขืชื”, I'll build the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ. But you know what? If it comes because I'm the one that's doing it, you guys ain't getting in. What says you ain't getting in? You're not going to feel what the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ is supposed to give you. You're not going to be living there. Because it's built by the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื”, he builds in and he says ืขื“ ืฉื™ืชืŸ ื™ืฆื™ืื•ืชื™ื•, till you pay all the expenses. In other words, even then you have to do teshuvah and you have to start doing everything, and you have to have the yirat shamayim, then I'm going to let you in. And I'm going to let you in, and I'm going to be on top and you're going to be in here. This is what... Huh? No, but he is able to build it because what he does is he puts a yesod of teshuvah into the Yidden, but ืžืœืžืขืœื” ืœืžื˜ื”. He puts it in that we didn't really work on this. So the Eibershter, that's fine, but that's not exactly... I really really, I shouldn't let you in. I'll build the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ, but you're not paying, you don't want to build it, I'm not letting you in. I'll have to build it, because the time comes I have to build, I'm not letting you in. Unless you pay ื™ืฆื™ืื•ืชื™ื•. ื–ืื’ื˜ ืขืจ, ื‘ืืžืช is like this: there's a Midrash that the

Midrash on building Jerusalem and gathering the exiles

Tzemach Tzedek brings, the Rebbe brings this Midrash. The Midrash said on the ืคืกื•ืง ื‘ื•ื ื” ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ื”', ื”' builds ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื, ื ื“ื—ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื™ื›ื ืก, he gathers all the Yidden who are pushed away. ืคืฉื˜ ืคืฉื•ื˜ in pasuk is very simple: ื”' builds ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื and he'll gather all the Yidden. The ืžื“ืจืฉ says, I think the Rebbe didn't use the ืœืฉื•ืŸ, it's a ืžื“ืจืฉ ืคืœื™ืื”. The ืžื“ืจืฉ says, ืืฃ ืขืœ ืคื™ ืฉื‘ื•ื ื” ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ื”', even though the Eibershter builds ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื, ืืฃ ืขืœ ืคื™ ื›ืŸ, still ื ื“ื—ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื™ื›ื ืก, he'll gather all the Yidden together. What does the ืžื“ืจืฉ mean? So the Rebbe says this is the pshat: ื‘ืืžืช, when the Eibershter is the ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืขืœื™ื” builds the ื‘ื™ืช, he shouldn't let us in. ื–ืื’ื˜ ื“ืขืจ ืžื“ืจืฉ the ืคืกื•ืง, you know what, the Eibershter is a good guy. The Eibershter says, you know what, ืืฃ ืขืœ ืคื™ ืฉื‘ื•ื ื” ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื ื”', even though the Eibershter builds ื™ืจื•ืฉืœื™ื, nevertheless he says, you know what, I'll forgo, ื ื“ื—ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื™ื›ื ืก, I'm going to gather all the Yidden, I'm going to bring them into the ื‘ื™ืช, into the ื‘ื™ืช ืœืžื˜ื”, into the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ, and have them feel Mashiach, and they'll takeh be part of the of the of the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ. This is what the Mishnah says, but the Mishnah doesn't ืคื™ืจื•ืฉ, the Mishnah just says he doesn't let us in, and he waits ืขื“ ืฉื™ืชืŸ ืœื• ื™ืฆื™ืื•ืชื™ื•. Not going to let us in, even if he builds it, not going to let us in, because he wants us to pay our dues. And the ืžื“ืจืฉ adds to this: no, af al pi that the Eibershter does this, he shouldn't let us in, ื ื“ื—ื™ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื™ื›ื ืก, the Eibershter is going to gather us. But this is the Mishnah obviously the way you learn in ื’ืŸ ืขื“ืŸ, even though the Rebbe doesn't say that, but you learn all the Mishnayot in ื’ืŸ ืขื“ืŸ, which is like we know famous in the case ืฉื ื™ื ืื•ื—ื–ื™ืŸ ื‘ื˜ืœื™ืช, we have the Mishnah the way it's learned in Gan Eden, everyone knows that, I spoke about that a few times. And I just realized that it's a vort from the Baal Shem Tov, yet it's, I think that's what, I thought it was from the Frierdiker Rebbe, this is from the Baal Shem Tov in Keter Shem Tov, he says this vort: ืฉื ื™ื ืื•ื—ื–ื™ืŸ ื‘ื˜ืœื™ืช, you have two Yidden, there's a neshama, and there are two people who claim, when they come ืœืžืขืœื”, claim credit for this ื ืฉืžื”, ืฉื ื™ื ืื•ื—ื–ื™ืŸ. He doesn't give the mashal, but the Frierdiker Rebbe in a in a sicha gives a ืžืฉืœ ืœื“ื•ื’ืžื: a guy is sitting in a store, storekeeper, and while no customers there, he sits outside and he says Tehillim, learns some Mishnayot, and a Yid walks by, a freier Yid walks by, and he sees him sitting there, so he stops. And this Yid starts asking him, who are you, what are you, starts talking to him, talking about Yiddishkeit. Didn't have much effect. And he goes, but it went into his head, something. Later on, he meets another guy, and that guy starts again talking to him, but since he already was a little bit warmed up by the first, the second guy convinces him and he becomes frum. So they come ืœืžืขืœื”, so they're both, the first guy says, if not for me, you wouldn't have accomplished. ื›ื•ืœื” ืฉืœื™. ืฉื ื™ื ืื•ื—ื–ื™ืŸ ื‘ื˜ืœื™ืช, ื–ื” ืื•ืžืจ ื›ื•ืœื” ืฉืœื™, says it's mine, ืื ื™ ืžืฆืืชื™ื”, I found him. And the other guy says, \"No, ื›ื•ืœื” ืฉืœื™ and ืื ื™ ืžืฆืืชื™ื”, I found him.\" So what's the psak din? ื™ื—ืœื•ืงื•. They both get. ื–ื” ื ืฉื‘ืข ื•ื–ื” ื ืฉื‘ืข. Each one swears. What does swearing mean? Swearing has another meaning: ืœืฉื•ืŸ ืฉื•ื‘ืข, ืž'ื–ืขื˜ื™ืงื˜, to give koachot. Each one gets the koachot. Each one, Der Eibershter says, \"You're both right, and you both get the full, full credit.\" So there, actually, this is the way the Tzemach Tzedek said to the Rebbe Maharash, \"I want to teach you how you learn a Mishnah in Gan Eden.\" And he taught him this Mishnah. WeiรŸt du, this is another Mishnah in Gan Eden. Now, the truth is, I'm not going to go into it now, it'll be time later, in the last Mishnah the ืฉื ื™ ื’ื ื•ืช ื–ื• ืขืœ ื’ื‘ ื–ื•. Maybe someone else will say it. The Tzemach Tzedek has a long maamar and he explains it also how you learn in Gan Eden. A Geshmakke pshat in the last Mishnah, but that's more complicated.
