Menorah Pesukim in Parashat Terumah

Okay, we'll look at the pesak, these pesukim of the Menorah, all the pesukim of the Menorah are written in Parashat Terumah. This one, this פסוק שנאמר עד ירכה עד פרחה, that by the ירך, by the bottom, would be a פרח, that's a pasuk in Beha'alotcha. It says בהעלותך את הנרות, when you light the Menorah, then עד ירכה עד פרחה, but לפועל it comes out from there that there was a פרח, a flower, at the bottom by the ירך. ושלשה רגלים היו לה, it had three feet. See, this picture doesn't have it, had three feet. ושלשה כפתורים אחרים היו בקנה המנורה, besides what we're going to say, the the four that we said before, the four cups and a כפתור and פרח on the bottom, there were also three more buttons by the middle one, שמהם יוצאים ששת הקנים, that the middle here where the six branches come out, so it came out from a button. שלשה מצד זה ושלשה מצד זה, three on this side and three on this side. ובכל קנה וקנה מהן, in each קנה of them, each קנה itself, had שלשה גביעים, had three גביעים, three bechers, three cups, and a כפתור and a פרח. והכל משוקדים, כמין שקדים בעשייתן, they're all משוקדים. What does משוקדים mean? Well, here משוקדים also comes from the word of the word משוך, like it says here המנורה גביעיה משוקדיה, it all means it's banged out. Also it says some say it means משוקדים מלשון שקד, שקדים, almonds, because it had... Three buttons in the middle on the on the middle one. The middle one, see, these three buttons, see? These three. On the other side, too? They're on both sides? No.

Missing Feet in Menorah Illustrations

Why would there be a picture without any feet? Huh? I don't know, this he says a picture of the Rambam, I don't understand. See, this one is a picture... No, he has another picture here, doesn't have the feet either. So it could be they just didn't make the feet. Mah she'ein kein in this picture, oh, this also doesn't have... Here, here he has the feet. This picture has the feet. Here, this picture also doesn't have feet. So that's because you don't need a picture for that, I guess, I don't know. If there was a front and a back to it, to the Menorah. That's a good she'eilah. The three buttons were on this side. That was on one side. No, this... These were all around. On the bottom, the flower. The, but the buttons in the middle. Button is all around? It was like a thick knot, that's probably what it was like. Here they make it more like that. It was like in the middle a thick knot that surrounded the whole Menorah, yeah. Something like that. Okay, we'll go to the details. Flowers are also all around? Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Sure, it's all around. They

Buttons vs Bulbs on the Menorah

call it bulbs instead of a button, maybe that explains it more. A bulb instead of a button, they call it bulbs. They call it a bulb? Yeah, so maybe that explains A bulb, what's a a bulb? Light bulb? Yeah, like a bulb, yeah. They call it a bulb? In English that's... A ball is called a I would call it a ball, no? Ball, bulb. Bulb, that's called. Taking the flowers, flowers usually you look at, you think of a flower is... No, no. It's a flower in the קנה, in other words, around around the thing, around the קנה there was a flower coming out. Flower, like you know, like flowers, here you have a picture of it. Yeah, see this flower? This flower was coming out. This is where the the oil was. This container? A container, yes, they had to have a container on top to hold a lot of oil to burn. That's part of the flower? No. No, this is a container. No, but that this is not this That could be part of the flower. Why would this be part of the flower and not this? This is just made picture, you can make it however you want. Well, everything came not in, out, not in. It was taken from the same piece, obviously, the same piece was knocked out to become... The

Rambam’s Menorah Diagram Details

Rambam will explain it a little bit soon, I mean, further. No, some שיטות hold it was a plain thing like this, just like this. There was a there was a thing like this and like this. He has the feet here, too. Yeah, okay, that makes sense. All the Menorot had to be like that, or No, no. Only if only if it's made from gold. Yeah, here, here he has Yeah, I see, here he has here. Different, yeah. Well, how do you know according to the picture he made in Sefer HaMitzvot, in Perush HaMishnayot. Any Menorah that was made out of gold had to be like this. Right, if it was made out of something other thing, it didn't have to be like this. And it's not only the one that Moshe made, any others that they've made Yeah, if they made it out of gold. So the Rambam goes to the פרקים now. נמצא, it comes out, כל הגביעים שנים ועשרים, comes out all the bechers together were 22. הפרחים תשעה, nine flowers, הכפתורים אחד עשר, and 11 buttons, וכולם מעכבין זה את זה. They all מעכבין each other. You

Complete Set of Cups, Flowers, Buttons (42)

can't have one missing, each one must be there, and if one is אפילו אחד מן השנים וארבעים מעכב את כולן. Even if one is missing from the 42, cuz altogether it's 42. 22 + 9 + 11 is 42, and if one thing is missing, it's pasul. You have to have them all. Now, we didn't go through, maybe we should, what was the seder of how when it says in the beginning that the menorah had, the middle one had four גביעים, where were the four גביעים? No, on top they were all equal. On top, each one had three גביעים and a כפתור and a פרח, and all of them, all seven, were the same. But the middle one, if you look at the bottom, the middle one at the bottom had another גביע, so that's why it's four גביעים, and then it had another כפתור and another פרח. You see, on top of the גביע, you had... There's bottom, and besides that, it had one on the bottom, all the way on the bottom, by the ירך, and then it had the three ones in the middle. So it comes out like this, that here you had four גביעים, four גביעים and two כפתורים and two פרחים besides the the the פרח at the bottom, and here you had three and one and one. So all together this is the cheshbon that we make. And here it's a clear clear thing: Here you have the three גביעים, כפתור and a פרח, three גביעים, כפתור and a פרח, here you have a גביע, כפתור and a פרח, here you have a פרח, here you have the three כפתורים. What? This? This one? Yeah. Yeah, because this is not the Rambam. That's the שיטת הרמב״ן. He has another picture here. שיטת הרמב״ם the picture is with the גביעים down. Well, the

Rambam’s Upside‑Down Cup Depiction

Rambam's pictures, that's how he makes it. The Rambam was, yeah. Here, this page. Page 58, the גביעים are down. It says here it says גביעי המנורה הפוכים כביאורו של הרבי. And here is this too. And here is... But the Rebbe, cuz the Rambam made a picture. And the chidush is that the Rambam made this picture in Peirush HaMishnayos. So the picture in Likkutei Sichos is a copy of the Rambam's כתב יד קדש, the original Rambam's's כתב. Then the Rebbe explains there in the sichah, why didn't the Rambam write, make the picture also in Mishneh Torah? So he gives sevarot, maybe that it's called, that's not a place to make pictures or whatever. B'poal, they found other כתבי יד of the Rambam of the Mishneh Torah where he has pictures. And this is taken from one of those כתבים, and the Rambam actually adds here, וזה צורתה. And then there's a picture. And the picture is the same way: The picture is slanty, slanty קנים, and the גביעים are upside down. And that's the whole sichah. The

Rebbe on Slanted Menorah Branches

Rebbe explains why were the קנים slanty. And the Rebbe says that there are others hold that the Rambam held that it was round, because they didn't see the picture, they never saw. Had they seen, the Maaseh Choshev, the Maaseh Choshev, which had he seen the picture, he would have changed, the Rebbe says. And another thing, he writes a madne zach, why do we think it was round? So he writes, because it says the word קנה. Now, besides that, but the word says in the תורה, קנה. The Rebbe says, I don't understand, if you take the word קנה, the word קנה means a פירוש straight. When the קנים grow, they grow round? They grow like this. Maaseh Choshev? There, yeah. This one, this big thick book. Ah, that's Maaseh Choshev writes it was round. אלא מאי, the Rebbe said they took it from the the Arch of Titus. So the Rebbe says, that's a mistake there. That said it's not from this מנורה. It's not from this מנורה, it's from a different מנורה that they took. Right, of other menorot they had, and this is another one that they took, this is not the menorah in the Beit Hamikdash. Okay. Huh? No, it's pretty pretty good. And he took all the kelim. I could I I could check up in a picture. I took some pictures there myself. And here, really you could see nicely. On the wall, what is it? On the wall, it's an arch. It's Arch מנצחון when he won the war against Eretz Yisrael, they made an arch for him. And that's and they used to force Yidden to come there every year to show them that we are מנוצחים, and there it says, there's pictures of of capturing, carrying the ענינים of Yidden, and it says in in in in in they say that Yidden are captive, yeah. Judea, Judea are captive. Okay. קוקט ווייטער, בהלכה ד׳: במה דברים אמורים, all this that you have to have these amount of גביעים and פרחים, בשעשואה זהב, if you made it out of gold. אבל

Materials: Gold vs Other Metals for Menorah

שאר מיני מתכות, if you make other other metal, אין עושים בה גביעים כפתורים ופרחים, you don't have to make these גביעים גביעים כפתורים ופרחים. וכן מנורה, another thing, מנורה הבאה זהב, if the מנורה is made of gold, תהיה כולה כיכר, it has to be made of a כיכר. A כיכר is a certain measurement of gold, a certain weight. עם נרותיה, this included not only the מנורה, but in this כיכר was also the cups which held the oil, which באמת they were made separately. They took, they were made from the כיכר, made separately, but they were put on, and they were קבועה there. They weren't connected, but it was said that they never took them out. 153 lb. How much is a How much, 153 lb of gold? How much is it? Oh, this is the picture, this is exactly the picture, takeh it doesn't have it, and I remember this one. That's, no? I don't think it had a serpent on it. That would be certainly wrong. 153 lb of gold is $1600 More, you're kidding? An ounce if an ounce of gold is now $1,600, it used to be $1,800, now it's $1,600. In the millions. That's why they did with the Machon HaMikdash, actually this was given out by the Machon Huh? So, how many ounces total? Of gold, yeah. But the Machon HaMikdash when they were making all the kelim, they made a menorah, but they made it out of silver, because they couldn't afford to make out of gold. It's in the millions, it's millions of dollars. Does it have to be the same size? Yeah. I mean I don't, it's not a me'akev, but it has to be roughly the same size. $3 million. How much? $3 million. $3 million. Okay. the menorah out of gold? Yeah. they can have never the For the Beit Hamikdash you could. They're making it for the Beit Hamikdash. They're making it to have it ready for the Beit Hamikdash, you're allowed to. Why not? Make for use, you're not allowed to, but you're making it for the sake of the Beit Hamikdash, you're holding it for the Beit Hamikdash. Yeah. Also ותהיה כולה מקשה מן העשת, you have to have the whole מנורה cupped out of one big piece, a chunk of gold, and that the guy cupps it out, and makes it. But שאר מיני מתכות, you make it out of other metal, אין מקפידין על משקלה, it doesn't matter how much it weighs, אם היתה חלולה כשרה, even if it was hollow, it's okay. In other words, it doesn't have to be a solid piece of metal, it could be hollow also, it could be lightweight. It's kasher, bediavad it's kasher. Did they ever make it like that? Yeah, in time of the of Chanukah, you'll see. ואין עושין אותה מן הגרוטאות, and you can't make it from broken pieces. Can't take like broken pieces of metal that you have scrap metal and you put them together, that you can't do. Huh? No, I believe that means, yeah, even if you melt it, בין שהיתה של זהב בין שהיתה של שאר מתכות, whether gold or not, it's a ביזיון. If you take it, it was already a כלי, and it was broken pieces, you have to take it from original gold or original metal. But it is gold when they mine gold, it doesn't come out like a big piece like this. They have to mine it and they put it in solid Yeah, but it's still it's still not גרוטאות, גרוטאות are כלים, כלים that broke. המלקחיים והמחתות, the מלקחיים were the צװענגלעך the Tongs. and the מחתות are like the sco the shovels that you scoop out the that the the ashes or, וכלי השמן, or the כלים to hold the oil, אינם מכלל הכיכר, that's not part of the כיכר. Yeah, I think Rashi learns differently from I think Rashi learns that it is part of the, I'm not sure. שהרי נאמר בתורה, it says in the תורה, זהב טהור, it says on the Menorah itself it has to be pure gold, וחזר ואמר, and then it says again, מלקחיה ומחתותיה זהב טהור, that these כלים should be זהב טהור. What does that mean? It has to be separate. ולא נאמר נרותיה זהב טהור, see by the נרות, which is the cups where that held the oil, it doesn't repeat again it should be gold again. Why? מפני שהנרות קבועין במנורה והם מכלל הכיכר, they were there, and they're part of the כיכר, while the other כלים were not part of the כיכר, so they had to be gold, but they're not part of the כיכר. שבעת קני המנורה מעכבין זה את זה, the seven are me'akev, you must have all seven. שבעת נרותיה מעכבין זה את זה, and the seven cups of oil are me'akev, you can't say, well, you'll have seven seven branches, but one thing won't have a cup, and won't have oil, that you can't. בין שהיתה של זהב בין שהיתה של שאר מתכות, whether it was gold or other metal. וכל הנרות קבועים בקנים, and all the נרות, like I said before, were קבועה, were set there, they never took them out. Some hold they used to take them out every day to clean it. And the Rambam holds it was put in there, and it stayed there. Why is the lashon in invalidates the others? The whole Menorah is pasul. Why Why didn't he just say it like that? If the others, the whole thing is not It isn't. What I would imagine, I'm just saying my own peshat, that the difference would be, if we say the Menorah is pasul, then it means that you have to fix it. So you add another one, and now it's kasher. Could be that if it was missing one when you made the full menorah, now you got to take it apart and put it together again. You can't just add one, because the the other ones are pasul already. So remake the whole thing. And just remake the whole thing. It's like תעשה ולא מן העשוי, if you don't remake the whole thing, whatever is made is pasul, and now you're going to add another one, it's like על דרך Okay, it's not the exact same thing, in tzitzit, let's say, if you make it in a pasul way, and then you just cut it, and it turns into kasher, תעשה ולא מן העשוי. Anyway, this is it.

Six Cups and Their Interdependence

ששת הנרות הקבועים בששת הקנים, the six cups that were in the six branches, היוצאים מן המנורה, that came out from the menorah—like I said before, the menorah is called the middle one, that came out—כולם פניהם לנר האמצעי שעל קנה המנורה, they all were turned a little bit, tilted, towards the middle. וזה הנר האמצעי, and the middle one, פניו כנגד קדש הקדשים, was tilted towards the קדש הקדשים. והוא הנקרא, that's called נר מערבי, that's the one that's called נר מערבי, which... What? The נר מערבי was tilted toward the בית קדשי הקדשים, right? No, it says פני המנורה יאירו שבעת הנרות. Doesn't say about the middle. In all the pictures you see that they're inclined... Yeah, somebody had before the menorah, they saw it. Huh? In the Gemara. The cups were tilted or the wicks were inclined? Mimela they were tilted, the cup and the wick. Yeah, the cup mimela, no, yeah, mimela they were, the cups were a little bit this way, and then the wick. The fire wasn't Everyone thinks that the fire was this way. The fire can't be tilted, the fire always goes straight up. Right, but if the wick, so it will tilt, you can tilt in a certain way. I don't know. Because the cup was tilted. Here the Rambam says that the cup was tilted. The Rambam says, yeah, the nerot are the cups. And the cup is not, the ner is not the which, the wick. That's why you have on Chanukah, the the Avnei Nezer holds that you can't use a candle. Why? Because it has to be a ner, and a ner means a keli. So you have to have a keli which contains the the the oil or whatever it is, and then you could call it a ner. But in essence, this is only the fuels, it's the... So he writes that you can't use candles. And the Rabbi Shlog him up. And the Rebbe says, by a candle, the rest of the candle that's not burned yet, that's the ner! That's like the keli that holds it. They put a cup anyway if you put it in... And if you don't put it in? And if you put it on the table? That's why... Rashi says, yeah? That shows that you don't need a keli. A wick, okay. Why, if the flame goes up anyway no matter how you... That's what Rashi says, I don't know. That's why it was... I don't believe... Okay.
