Rabbi Akiva’s Seven Advice to Rabbi Yehoshua

Yeah, that's a daf. Okay, מיר האלטן דא, אזוי: תנו רבנן, די רבנן האבן געלערנט. Down here, מ\"ז, in the middle of מ\"ז. שבעה דברים צוה רבי עקיבא את רבי יהושע בנו. Seven things did Rabbi Akiva tell Rabbi Yehoshua, his son. The famous Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korcha, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korcha is Rabbi Akiva's son. Rabbi Akiva was called Korcha, he was a קירח, he was baldy, so so he said to him like this: Number one, בני, אל תשב בגובהה של עיר ותשנה, don't sit in the top of the city and learn. Don't sit and learn in a place where, you know, okay, don't sit in downtown and learn. They're not going to let you learn, people are going to bother you, so don't learn there. ואל תדור בעיר שראשיה תלמידי חכמים, don't live in a city that the leaders are תלמידי חכמים. Too busy. They're too busy learning, they won't take care of the of the צרכי ציבור, they won't take care that everything in the city should go. ואל תכנס לביתך פתאום, don't come into your house suddenly, in other words without knocking. כל שכן לבית חבירך, certainly not somebody else's. They might be doing something, you know, private. So basically everybody knocks, so I don't know, doctors What? Is there some minhag, some to knock before entering? For

Knocking Before Entering a Room – The Gemara Rule

who? For entering any room. Yeah, strictly, not any room, the house. You come home and you you knock first. Or if you have to put in the key, I guess that's enough, you know, that they hear. You can't just come and open the door. That's not a minhag, that's Gemara. Gemara learns from a pasuk: מה טובו אהליך יעקב, שאין פתחיהן מכוונות זו כנגד זו. הקדוש ברוך הוא עם אדם נאותו? Yeah? אמר לו איכה. Ah? That that הקדוש ברוך הוא אמר לאדם איכה, כלומר שידע ש That's for a different reason, he shouldn't get scared. Selicha, but here it's because it's דברי צניעות, he might do something private. ואל תמנע מנעלים מרגליך. You should never hold back from shoes, you should make sure shoes shoes is one of the most Gemara says, different What? I can't go without shoes. Here it goes outside, that is. Minhag not in the house is something else, because it's like an aveil, that's something else. Outside, pashut, it's you know, it's paved, it's a walkway, but if it's not paved, there's sand, there's stones, and this is He didn't say outside. The Gemara didn't say outside. Or they'd kill you for the shoes. Ah? But here it doesn't say, but that's the reason it means. Rashi says no, Rashi says yeah, עמק. Yeah, I mean, what? Not that, you know, how far עמק, to walk from small, but bichlal to walk around without shoes, we don't, in the house. That's for a different reason. Take the shoes off so we don't track dirt around the house. So put on slippers.

Eat Early in Summer and Winter

השכם ואכול בקיץ מפני החמה ובחורף מפני הצינה. Early, eat early. Summertime because of the sun, because the heat, eat early, you know, not so hot, and in winter because it's the the cold. So you gotta get up and daven early. Ah? Yeah, sure. Unless, if you have to daven, unless you eat before davening. Lubavitcher eat before davening. Still gotta come to minyan on time, though. Can come early anyway, yeah. ועשה שבתך חול ואל תצטרך לבריות, make your Shabbos like the weekdays, and don't come unto people. In other words, if you can't make extra food for Shabbos because you don't have, and the only way you could do it is by collecting, don't collect, let it be chol. Some people told me, \"I make שבת חול, go to work on Shabbos.\" For the same reason, אל תצטרך לבריות, because if I don't work Shabbos, I won't have money, so עשה שבת, yeah. והוי משתדל עם מי שהשעה משחקת לו, and be mishtadel, and be nice, be, can be, you'll see, in business with somebody, be friendly, but good with somebody that you see his mazal is good. אמר רב פפא, Rav Papa says, that doesn't mean למיזבן מיניה ולזבוני ליה, it doesn't mean to buy, it's a good time to buy from him because he's a mazel-diker guy, or to sell to him, אלא לאשתתופי בהדיה, become his partner. Aha. והשתא, now, דאמר רב שמואל, אמר רבי יצחק, it's not, it's Yochanan. מאי דכתיב, what's the pshat in the pasuk? It says מעשה ידיו ברכת. In Iyov it says that the Aibershter blessed his, how did the Aibershter bless him? It means, כל הנוטל פרוטה מאיוב מתברך, anybody who took money from Iyov would get a bracha, אפילו למזבן מיניה. In other words, from a good guy you could even take something and it's also a segulah. So, that's why the Rebbe gave out dollars. Yeah, that's what it means. That's where the whole idea of the Rebbe giving out money, dollars, coins comes from this Gemara. אפילו למיזבן מיניה ולזבוני ליה, it's a, even to buy from him, to sell to him, any dealings you have with a person like Iyov or tzaddik or somebody that has a good mazal is good, not only to become his partner. Zagt di Gemara vayter, חמישה, and the Rebbe brought this Gemara, takeh, many times. Gemara's here and also in in Bava Basra. That's when not legabei giving dollars, but sometimes he would give somebody money and he would say this comes from the קופה פון שווער, from the קופה of my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe. And he saying, and that's a segulah like, and they quote this Gemara called מטיל פרוטה, נהנה מכיס מבורך. Oh, he said that. He used to take shutfus. Yeah. The Rebbe also said, the Rebbe also, sometimes. Yeah, he said, \"I'll become your שותף.\" Oh, yeah. No, he didn't take their money, become your שותף? No, the person is with שותפות. I know, but he didn't make a שטר, but he'd become your... Some people had מעשים. There was a guy who came in, I forgot to which Rebbe, one of the פוילישער רבי'ס, and he was מחלל שבת. So, he kept the store open. So, that Rebbe says to him, \"I want to become your partner.\" Then, he said, \"How about that? That's the biggest thing! Okay, now I'm your partner. I have a day. You close the store!\" But giving money for a segulah for partnership also, they say, I think it was... someone ever, I forgot which one... told the Frierdiker Rebbe told him he was opening a new business. And the Frierdiker Rebbe gave him 20 רובל. Oh, it was Alter, Elchanan Alter, Elchanan. So, he tells the Frierdiker Rebbe, \"I don't understand. If it's for a segulah, one רובל is enough. If it's to help me out, 20?\" Money segulot? Ah, yeah. חמישה דברים ציוה רבי עקיבא את רבי שמעון בן יוחאי. Five things that רבי עקיבא say to רבי שמעון בן יוחאי כשהיה חבוש בבית האסורים, when he was in jail. אמר ליה, he said to him, this is how the conversation started between them. רבי שמעון בן יוחאי says to רבי עקיבא, \"רבי, למדני תורה. Teach me תורה.\" רבי עקיבא is in jail, and רבי שמעון בן יוחאי is his תלמיד, and he says, \"Teach me תורה.\" And רבי עקיבא was in jail because he taught תורה. אמר ליה, he says, \"איני מלמדך. I'm not going to teach you. I have enough trouble. I'm going to have more trouble.\" אמר ליה, so he said, \"אם אי אתה מלמדני, if you're not going to teach me, אני אומר ליוחאי אבא, I'll tell יוחאי, my father, ומוסרך למלכות.\" In other words, his father... There is a few pshatim. One pshat is that his father had connections in the government. \"I'm going to tell my father and he's going to מסור on you and it'll make it worse for you.\" He was, like, threatening him! Yeah. אמר ליה, so he says look here, uh? So, he wanted to learn תורה. So, he says, \"בני, my son, יותר ממה שהעגל רוצה לינק, פרה רוצה להניק. More than the calf wants to nurse, drink milk, the mother, cow, wants to give.\" In other words, what he's trying to tell him, you know what? You think I don't want to teach you תורה? You're threatening me, you're forcing me to teach you, as if I don't want. Sure I want, but I don't think it's right. I think this is going to be a סכנה'דיקע thing. Amar lei, \"מי בסכנה? So, who's dangerous? הלא עגל בסכנה. The main thing is the עגל that's בסכנה. The calf, so I'm going to be בסכנה. You're not going to be בסכנה.\" But he meant to say, \"He's not going to be בסכנה. You're in jail anyway! You're in jail anyway, so the only thing, you're worried about me? Don't worry about me.\" So, he said, \"I'll teach you.\" So, he gave in and he gave him some instructions על פי תורה. Amar lei, he said to him like this, \"אם ביקשת לחנק, if you want to say something that... I don't know if לחנק means to be נתקשר, that's to be נתקבל... No, that's... It means it should be נתקבל by people, היתלה באילן גדול. Hang it onto a great tree.\" Which means, it's an expression: If you want to hang, hang yourself on a great tree. He meant to say if you want people to listen to you, if you say a psak, say it's a Rambam, say it's a... Yeah, but don't say it's false, don't say a lie. Make sure you heard it from an adam gadol, that's what he says. Make sure, that's what Rashi says, למוד לפני רב גדול ותתלה בשמו, make sure learn from an adam gadol, b'meila you'll be able to say it from an adam gadol, otherwise they won't listen to you. But that's an expression: You want to hang yourself, hang yourself on a big tree. וכשאתה מלמד את בנך תורה, when you teach your son תורה, למדהו בספר מוגה. Teach him in a ספר that's corrected. מאי היא? What did he mean? אמר רבא, ואיתימא רב משרשיא, בחדתא, that if you're teaching something to somebody who is just starting to learn, something new, and a child is starting, then make sure teach him correctly. ושבשתא, כיוון דעל על. If you make a mistake and you get used to for young as your mistake, that's called girsa d'yankusa. You see girsa d'yankusa is always good for the beginning. Gemara says in Shabbos that Abaye said something, it's a halacha, and he said he didn't know it till later he heard it. So they asked him, \"So you heard it now! What's wrong if you heard it now?\" He says, \"The difference is if I hear it earlier when I was younger, I would remember it more.\" So that's in the good side. And the same thing in the bad side: If you make a mistake when you're young and they don't correct you, it's going to be, and you see old people davening, they make mistakes in, why? Because when they were young, no one corrected them and that's how it is. And שבשתא כיוון דעל על, a mistake continues. בכל אופן, in a ספר, it says in the גמרא, התם בבבא בתרא, אסור, you're not allowed to hold in your house, no, not Bava Batra, Ketubot, a ספר שאינו מוגה. אסור להשהות בבית ספר שאינו מוגה, a ספר that's not correct. That's why there is even sha'alot on a ספר תורה, if you find a mistake, how long can you leave it before you fix it? So some say if, since we make a siman, we put this, maybe it's different. Some say not, that you still have to fix it within 30 days and you can't keep it so long. One mistake, not save a poll. But you have mistakes. Yeah, like those days there was no print, right? So there was writing, people would be מעתיק wrong, make mistakes, so you have to How do we have so many girsaot? Because of this? Huh? No, sometimes it's a kushya, and really it's supposed to say posel, I mean, people make mistakes. You see, you find old sefarim, even in print you find mistakes. Even in print. Yeah, some mistakes, but there they made mistakes without care, some intentionally made mistakes. Yeah. I mean I don't know Chabad often, but the רב welb, mishtas, דלקמן. Shit, misprinted, and they want to say mistake, according to this, they can't keep Shulchan Aruch in the שמש. If you hold it's a mistake. You could be magiah here, you could write it as a mistake, so the Shach and ט״ז write. No, first of all, you can't just fix it. That's a cherem from the Rabbeinu Tam not to fix a sefer. Magiah a sefer from שכל unless you have a you have other כתב, but from סברא. For instance, you read and you see it sounds like it's a mistake. No. We don't eat milk with it. Why? Those that say it's a mistake means that when when the Beit Yosef wrote it, he made a mistake, he meant to write basar, he wrote chalav. So chasidim say, אפילו if it's a mistake, some say it's not a mistake, he meant it, and something the Pitchei Teshuvah brings, and some, like chasidim, they used to say if the Beit Yosef made a mistake, that's not safe also. So if there's one mistake in it, they're going to take it off the shelf or put a ribbon around it to remind you. No, we can't we can't fix it. But the point, shouldn't learn from a sefer that has a mistake in it. How about print? You know how many mistakes there are? Actually, today I was dealing with something in Likkutei Sichot. There's a sichah where it says if it's I mentioned it, we learned it, נפש אלוקית and נפש בהמית, I checked it up. I looked up the רבי׳ס כתב יד, it says נפש בהמית, I don't know how they got it, they printed it נפש אלוקית, I mean. Sure, it's always, so, again, you're not going to take the sefer off the shelf for it's just one mistake, and we're talking about a lot. You got to fix it. Now here you know it's a mistake because you looked up the look original, but other places where it looks like it's a mistake. Why why is it in the Gemara when there's a mistake they say on the side, they have a צד, on the side it says this and this כן צריך לומר? Why doesn't the the printer should have, instead of doing that, should have fixed it. The Rabbeinu Tam said you're not allowed to do that. Okay, weiter. ואל תבשל בקדירה שבישל בה חבירך. Don't cook in a pot that your friend cooked. מאי היא? It doesn't mean כפשוטו, it's a משל. גרושה בחיי בעלה. Don't marry a divorcee while her husband is alive. Normally we've learned, גרוש שנשא גרושה, if he's divorced and she he marries a גרושה, ארבע דעות במטה. There are four like four people in the bed because he's thinking about his previous wife and she's thinking about her previous husband, so it's like they're not allowed to. If so this is בנוגע a גרושה, but if it's an אלמנה, he died. איבעית אימא, אפילו באלמנה. Even by אלמנה you should never marry an אלמנה, לפי שאין כל האצבעות שוות. Because not everyone is the same, and she might feel that what he's doing to her not as good as her previous husband, and she won't really like him. So some people, people that marry an אלמנה, worry about this Gemara. Okay, there are all kinds of things. It's a חרם, it's not a halacha lema'aseh, but this is a Gemara. By a גרושה you worry too, right? You're not going to wait for the guy to die. You're going to wait for the ex-husband to die. Not to marry an אלמנה? Yeah, this Gemara says not to marry an אלמנה. No, no, but להלכה it's not. No, no, this, yeah. Why is why is the Rambam why is there a is this based on the Rambams פסק, or is it past the Rambam? This this here no, it's not from the Rambam. Here, ג, it's it's it's Gemara in נדה also, that's where. Yeah. You know, an אלמנה has a better chance than a גרושה, because a גרושה is a חביצה. Yeah. Not always. Sometimes they're just fighting. They got out of it. They're glad they got out of it, but they have a feeling that the men are he's going to be they have an attitude. No, but that she divorced him because he was bad, she'll get a better one. I mean always it's just, but the Gemara gives a different reason, because ארבע דעות במטה. גרושה ש בעלים שלה מתו, אסור, שתי שני בעלים? או שלשה שמתו, אסור? No, that is that's something else. That's קטלנית. That's קטלנית. That's That's if you marry, two of them two of them died, then yeah, that's differently. Here we're talking about once, but this is not halacha lema'aseh. Then it says מצוה וגוף גדול, if you want to do a mitzvah, yeah, and you also want to gain by it, אכול פירות ולא שכר. Eat fruit and you don't get paid. What does he mean? Rashi explains, if you lend somebody money, take a משכון, yeah, a land. So what what's a משכון always? A משכון means that when he gives you, pays you the money, you give it back. But there is a משכנתא דסורא, which in Gemara in Shas and Bava Metzia we learned, that take a משכון say for ten years and every year I'm I'm going to use the fruit and whatever profit I make that's going to go off the loan. So he says here it's good for everybody. Side you're doing a mitzvah, you're helping that person, side you're going to it's it's It's a way to also you're going to make money. So what's the sechar? 'Cause you have, huh? The בלא שכר, what's the sechar? No, בלא שכר. The loss, the בלא שכר. Yeah. So what's what does he not, בלא שכר, what's the sechar that he doesn't get in that deal? You're never getting your money back. You're never getting your money back, just getting the fruit, but okay. No, you're getting your money back by fruit, but not like getting the whole money. You know, eventually getting back, but that's not like you're getting your money. What does this mean? How the words mean מצוה וגוף? מצוה וגוף גדול. Is it a mashal though for, yeah? It's an expression. If you want to do a mitzvah and גוף גדול, you want to have a big guf, you want to have like like make make money. Want to do a mitzvah and the same mitzvah you also make money. So if אוכל פירות ובלא שכר, and you don't get this, you eat, give them money, eat the fruit, and don't get paid. What's the mitzvah? The mitzvah, you're helping that guy. Oh, yeah. Quick question. But you're getting, you And you're going to make more money also, because you're getting the the the fruit of the field. So he's telling him this is good to do? It's good to do, yeah. That's not considered ribit if you get more if you make more? When, no, that's that's because that's משכנתא דסורא, that's the whole thing, yeah. It sounds complicated. We're davenening in two minutes. Uh-huh. Huh? It sounds like a complicated issue to me because that's No, no. That's the Gemara in המקבל is a whole sugya. ומצוה וגוף טהור נושא אשה ובלא בנים. If you want to do a mitzvah and you also want to have a גוף טהור, marry a woman ובלא בנים. A woman has And he has children. Who, he or she? He. וליה. If he has children, but you still marry a woman, so say you're doing a mitzvah, you're helping her, and say your גוף נקי because you're married. קודם I thought I'm not to marry, I wasn't mekayem the mitzvah of פריה ורביה. So here we say you go to marry. לא תהו בראה לשבת יצרה, יפה. Yeah, was the mitzvah for for who? For the woman, for her? Yeah, it's for both, it's for both, actually. Okay. Yishar koach.
