Rabbi Oshaya on Golden Trees in the Temple

In middle of Kislev, yeah. No more milk? Huh? We have no more milk. Here it is. That was learned about all the miracles of the Beit Hamikdash. 讗诪专 专讘讬 讗讜砖注讬讗, Rabbi Oshaya says, 讘砖注讛 砖讘谞讛 砖诇诪讛 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, when Shlomo Hamelech built the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, 谞讟注 讘讜 讻诇 诪讬谞讬 诪讙讚讬诐 砖诇 讝讛讘, he planted golden fruit made of gold. Fruit trees of gold? 讜讛讬讜 诪讜爪讬讗讬谉 驻讬专讜转讬讛谉 讘讝诪谞谉, and it would give fruit seasons. Gold, was gold fruit? Yeah, it was it was mamash a nes. Golden fruit? No, the fruit was not gold. The fruit was regular fruit, but but they were not real fruit, not real plant, but this was trees made of gold. 讜讻砖讛专讜讞 诪谞砖讘转 讘讛谉, when the wind blew, 谞讜砖专讬谉, the leaves would fall. So they get, money grows on trees? Yeah. Money, whatever it is. The golden egg. That was in it. What? The tree was made out of gold? Yeah, the fruit, yeah, he planted gold trees. And it was a nes, and it grew. Real fruit came out. 讜讻砖谞讻谞住讜 注讜讘讚讬 讻讜讻讘讬诐 诇讛讬讻诇, when the And then when you eat, you eat fruit, fruit? When the 讞讜专讘谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, it dried up. 砖谞讗诪专, it says, 讜驻专讞 诇讘谞讜谉 讗讜诪诇诇, that the growth of the of Levanon, which Levanon refers to the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, 讗讜诪诇诇 is is is The umglik is a umglik. It'll grow again, and it'll be happy, and the kavod to the Levanon the Beit Hamikdash will get be given back, and it'll come back.

The Miracle of the Altar Smoke

We said before, among the five, among the ten nisim that took place in the Beit Hamikdash, he mentioned that the smoke of the 诪注专讻讛, the smoke that was on top of the 诪讝讘讞, nothing moved it. Even the the strongest wind of the world came and didn't move it. That's what it says. 驻专注讙讟 讚讬 讙诪专讗: 讜注砖谉 讛诪注专讻讛, we said before one of the things, the smoke of the 诪注专讻讛. Was there actually smoke? When they made burned the korbanot the 诪注专讻讛, was there smoke? Five things is said concerning the fire of the 诪注专讻讛, five things. How about What What's the What's the question? Why wouldn't there be smoke? We'll see in a second. I will say there wasn't. You'll know proof that there wasn't. Okay, it says five things happened. It looked it was laying there the shape, fire is the shape of a lion, 讜讘专讜专讛 讻讞诪讛, it was clear, very clear like the sun, 讬砖 讘讛 诪诪砖, the fire doesn't have 诪诪砖, but this was has substance, 讜讗讜讻诇转 诇讞讬诐 讻讬讘砖讬诐, and it ate up the the the the the liquid like the dry, because usually fire doesn't eat liquid. The fire eat the fry things, but this it is. 讜讗讬谞讛 诪注诇讛 注砖谉, and it didn't give smoke! So if it didn't, how come we say here that the smoke went up always straight? So the Gemara says, When we're talking about the smoke is the the simple one, cause like this, the 转谞讬讗 it says, 讜谞转谞讜 讘谞讬 讗讛专谉 讛讻讛谉 讗砖, 讗讛专谉 讛讻讛谉 讗砖, children of 讗讛专谉 had to put fire on the 诪讝讘讞, 讗祝 注诇 驻讬 砖讗砖 讬讜专讚转 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, even though there was a fire came down from heaven, 诪爪讜讛 诇讛讘讬讗 诪谉 讛讛讚讬讜讟. You had to add more. Oh, so the part when it says that the fire of the 诪注专讻讛 did not have any smoke, that the original one that came down in time of Shlomo Hamelech that came down 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, that never had smoke, but always they had to add more regular fire, and that regular fire, that had smoke. And the nes was that that smoke never moved, never disturbed by the by the wind. Why do they even call it smoke? I mean, for first of all, it comes down from Shamayim. Smoke doesn't come down. Smoke goes up. What comes down from Shamayim? He just says it, it came Fire came down. Now the fire is here and it's burning. When fire burns things, usually there is smoke. So, So, this fire that came 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, that did not make any smoke. It didn't create any. But if you added other fire, huh? No, bichlal, bichlal. But this the act other fire that they had to add, the simple fire that they had to add, that makes smoke. So, what do they call it? It did It didn't have a It did have It had substance, and it looked like a lion, it it it was clear, It was all the 讗砖 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐. So So, what what is it? It's not smoke? It's the It's not smoke, it's about the fire, not the smoke. That's the fire. That's the fire. And one of the things that the fire was, is the fire Usually fire, when it burns, gives smoke, and this was one of the five things, it didn't make any smoke. 讜专讘讜爪讛 讻讗专讬, one of the things it said, it was laying like a lion on the 诪讝讘讞. I saw the fire on the 诪讝讘讞, 讜专讘讜爪讛 讻讻诇讘, it was a shape of a dog! Here we're 诪拽讚砖 专讗砖讜谉, here we're 诪拽讚砖 砖谞讬. In the first 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was a lion, second 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was like a dog, shape of a dog. Yidden were on a lower madregah. Then the Gemara asks, In the second 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, was there this fire? 讜讛讗诪专 专讘 砖诪讜讗诇 讘专 讗讬谞讬讗, 诪讗讬 讚讻转讬讘, it's a pasuk, it says a pasuk: 注诇讜 讛讛专 讜讛讘讗转诐 注抓 讜讘谞讜 讛讘讬转, it says 诇讙讘讬 the second 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, you're going to come up, you're going to take wood, you're going to build the house, 讜讗专爪讛 讘讜, and I'm going to want it, 讜讗讻讘讚讛 讗诪专 讛砖诐. The kor'inan of va'echabda, it says, 讜讗讻讘讚讛 without a 讛. So normally it's written 讜讗讻讘讚, but it's really supposed to be read 讜讗讻讘讚讛, but it's missing a 讛. Why is this word, means I'm going to have kavod from the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, but it's missing a 讛? Because there are five things here. These are the five things that is the difference between the first 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 and the second: 讗专讜谉, 讻驻讜专转 讜讻专讘讬诐, the aron and the top of the aron and the 讻专讜讘讬诐, 讗砖, the 讗砖 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐 wasn't there, too, Shechinah wasn't there, 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖 wasn't there, and the 讗讜专讬诐 讜转讜诪讬诐 wasn't there. So here we see that there was no fire The Gemara answers, 讗诪专, I'll tell you: 讗讬谉, 诪讬住讘 讛讜讛, it was there, but 住讬讜注讬 诇讗 诪住讬讬注, it just didn't work. It didn't accomplish anything. But this was there. The fire was there. So that fire lay lay on the mizbe'ach and it looked like a dog in the second

Six Types of Fire Described in the Gemara

转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 have learned, 砖砖 讗砖讜转 讛谉, there are six types of fire, okay? 讬砖 讗讜讻诇转 讜讗讬谞讛 砖讜转讛, there's one type of fire that eats and doesn't drink. That means it only burns up solids. It doesn't It's not moist. 讬砖 砖讜转讛 讜讗讬谞讛 讗讜讻诇转, there's some There's a kind of fire which drinks and doesn't eat. It only take has liquids, but it doesn't eat. 讬砖 讗讜讻诇转 讜砖讜转讛, then you have fire that eats and drinks. That means it takes up fire and a solids and liquids. 讬砖 讗讜讻诇转 诇讞讬诐 讻讬讘砖讬诐, there's one that could burn up damp things just as good as dry. 讜讬砖 讗砖 讚讜讞讛 讗砖, then there's a type of fire No, we'll see soon, okay. And the fire that's fire that pushes fire further. 讜讬砖 讗砖 讗讜讻诇转 讗砖, and then there is fire that eats up the fire. Now, the Gemara's going to give examples where do we find them. 讬砖 讗砖 讗讜讻诇转 讜讗讬谞讛 砖讜转讛, there is a fire that eats and doesn't drink, 讛讗 讚讬讚谉. It's our fire, regular fire. Every fire burns things, but it doesn't burn liquid. 砖讜转讛 讜讗讬谞讛 讗讜讻诇转, you have a fire that drinks and doesn't eat, 讚讞讜诇讬诐, sick people. A person is sick, he has fever. And what does it do? It makes him It makes him thirsty. It makes it eats up all the liquids, yeah? He's He doesn't want to eat. You know what it means? He's satisfied with eating, it doesn't take away his food, 驻诇讜讟 stay between me. But, he feels always he needs to drink, because the fire takes away feed a fever, starve a cold. Uh? So refrain, feed a fever, starve a cold. You get a fever, that's that's What does feed a fever mean? Feed a fever, starve a cold. Yeah? What does feed a fever mean? I don't know. It means that you should Whatever it means, it's just But it comes It's feed a fever and starve a cold. Here, we're saying if you have a fever It's saying. The fever will take up It's the same. A fever is heat. It takes up your liquid, but it doesn't take up your solid. 讗讜讻诇转 讜砖讜转讛, where do we see a fire that eats and drinks? 讚讗诇讬讛讜, when Eliyahu put the fire put the korban on the mizbe'ach and the fire came down from heaven. See what it says? They pour water on the 诪讝讘讞, but did he bring this, on this uh Well, here it says it did, we'll see in a second. Here, they made the 诪讝讘讞 drink water. He ate and drank. Yeah. It says, 讜转驻诇 讗砖 讛砖诐, when after he davened, the fire came from 讛砖诐, 讜转讗讻诇, and ate up 讗转 讛注诇讛, the 拽专讘谉, 讜讗转 讛注爪讬诐, the wood, 讜讗转 讛讗讘谞讬诐, the stones, 讜讗转 讛注驻专, the sand, 讜讗转 讛诪讬诐 讗砖专 讘转注诇讛 诇讞讻讛, because he made like a little canal around it. It was full of the water. It ate up the water, so by 讗诇讬讛讜, it ate and drank. 讗讜讻诇转 诇讞讬诐 讻讬讘砖讬诐, 讚诪注专讻讛, of by the 诪讝讘讞, it ate 诇讞讬诐 and 讬讘砖讬诐, the the the things which are dry and things which are wet, because they put in the 谞住讻讬诐 there and this and that, ate it up, too. 讬砖 讗砖 讚讜讞讛 讗砖, there's a fire that pushes fire, 讚讙讘专讬讗诇. What is the story of Gavriel? It says when Chanania, we learned that earlier, it's on 讚祝 讞. When Chanania, Mishael, veAzaria were thrown into the 讻讘砖谉, thrown into the into the furnace, came Gavriel and he What he did was, he cooled it off, but what he did was he made the fire that's there go out of the oven, and it burned up all the people that threw them in. So, here you had It pushed the 讗砖 away. There's 讗砖 that eat up 讗砖, that's the 砖讻讬谞讛. Where do we find it? It says the 诪诇讗讻讬诐 came to uh uh created an 讗讚诐, a person, so 讛砖诐 asks the 诪诇讗讻讬诐, \"Should I create?\" and they said, \"诪讛 讗谞讜砖 讻讬 转讝讻专谞讜? Why should you mention a person?\" It says the Oibershter put his small finger between them and he burned them up. And the 诪诇讗讻讬诐 are also 讗砖. This is the 讗砖 of the 砖讻讬谞讛 that burnt up that 讗砖. Okay, then the Gemara says, we said before, one of the nissim in the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was 注砖谉 讛诪注专讻讛, the smoke of the 诪注专讻讛 of the 诪讝讘讞, 讗驻讬诇讜 讻诇 讛专讜讞讜转 砖讘注讜诇诐 讗讬谉 诪讝讬讝讜转 讗讜转讜 诪诪拽讜诪讜, even all the winds of the world that went against it would not move it. So the Gemara, 讗诪专 专讘 讬爪讞拽 讘专 讗讘讚讬诪讬, didn't Rav Yitzchak bar Avdimi say 讘诪讜爪讗讬 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 讛讗讞专讜谉 砖诇 讞讙, 讘诪讜爪讗讬 the end of Sukkos, which is 讘诪讜爪讗讬 砖诪讬谞讬 注爪专转, and we know that and then that's when the Oibershter would would judge for the water, 讛讻诇 爪讜驻讬谉 讘注砖谉 讛诪注专讻讛, everyone would look at the smoke of the 诪注专讻讛, how it went, to which side it tilted.

Smoke Direction Predicts Weather and Market Outcomes

谞讜讟讛 讻诇驻讬 爪驻讜谉, and if it moved towards 爪驻讜谉, that means that which wind is blowing? The opposite? I thought it would tell you which one is... No, if it's going this way, so the wind is coming from this side. Ah, right. So then that the poor people were happy, and the 讘注诇讬 讘转讬诐, the rich people, were sad, why? 诪驻谞讬 砖讙砖诪讬 砖谞讛 诪专讜讘讬谉, because if you have the wind coming from 讚专讜诐, it means that it's going to bring a lot of rain. And if there's a lot of rain, 驻讬专讜转讬讛谉 诪专拽讬讘讬谉, rot, so the fruit rots. What happens if it rots? They have to sell it, they can't hold it, so they have to sell it. So there's a lot of fruit on the market, so automatically cheaper. So they're upset that they have to sell it for cheaper, the poor people are happy. 谞讜讟讛 讻诇驻讬 讚专讜诐, if the smoke is going to 讚专讜诐, this means that it's 爪驻讜谉 side, the wind is coming from 爪驻讜谉, the opposite, 注谞讬讬诐 注爪讘讬诐 讜注砖讬专讬诐 砖诪讞讬诐, the poor people are sad and the rich people are happy, 诪驻谞讬 砖讙砖诪讬 砖谞讛 诪讜注讟讬谉, because there'll be very little rain, 讜驻讬专讜转讬讛谉 诪砖转诪专讬谉, so then the fruit will not just rot and they're able to put it away, so they're able to hold it, and what happens? Then the prices go up, so they're happy and the 注谞讬讬诐 are sad. 谞讜讟讛 讻诇驻讬 诪讝专讞, if it was towards 诪讝专讞, that means that the wind came from 诪注专讘, 讛讻诇 砖诪讞讬诐, everyone was happy, because then the wind that comes from 诪注专讘 seems to be a normal common, which is balance, which is this, it's not too too expensive, not too, it's balanced. 谞讜讟讛 讻诇驻讬 诪注专讘, if it goes to 诪注专讘, 讛讻诇 注爪讘讬诐, everyone was sad. Why? Because if it comes from 诪注专讘, then it's going to ruin everything, it dries up the things that grow, and Rashi brings from Gittin, so mimela there's nothing there, so everyone's going to we no food, they won't make money and they won't have food, etcetera. But meantime, what do we see? That the wind did, that the smoke did turn! We're saying one of the nisim was no wind could move it, here it moved it! So the Gemara answers, What it means is like this: it was always a straight line, and that straight line moved. Usually when wind comes, smoke spreads out, that never happened. As we say, the strongest wind, the smoke stayed like a line, a straight line, like a 讚拽诇讗, like a palm tree, straight line, only thing is which way it turned, sometimes it turned this way, sometimes it turned this way. We said a minute ago, 讗诪专 诪专, we said 讻诇驻讬 诪讝专讞 讛讻诇 砖诪讞讬诐, if it turns to 诪讝专讞 everyone is happy, because the 诪注专讘 wind is good. 讻诇驻讬 诪注专讘, if it turns to 诪注专讘, the 诪讝专讞 wind is bad, 讛讻诇 注爪讘讬诐, everyone is sad. So the Gemara, 讜专诪讬谞讛讜, I'll ask you a kashya. It says like this:

East vs West Wind: Blessing or Curse

诪讝专讞讬转 诇注讜诇诐 讬驻讛, the 诪讝专讞 one is always good, 诪注专讘讬转 诇注讜诇诐 拽砖讛, is always bad. 专讜讞 爪驻讜谞讬转, the 专讜讞 from 爪驻讜谉, 讬驻讛 诇讞讟讬诐 讘砖注讛 砖讛讘讬讗讜 砖诇讬砖, for the wheat that already grew a third, this wind is good, 拽砖讛 诇讝讬转讬诐 讘砖注讛 砖讛谉 讞讜谞讟讬谉, it's no good for the olives when it's blossoming. 专讜讞 讚专讜诪讬转 讬驻讛 诇讝讬转讬诐, the 讚专讜诐 side, the wind from 讚专讜诐 is good for the olives 讘砖注讛 砖讛谉 讞讜谞讟讬谉, when they're blossoming, 讜拽砖讛 诇讞讟讬诐 讘砖注讛 砖讛讘讬讗讜 砖诇讬砖, it's bad for the 讞讟讬诐. That the 砖讜诇讞谉 in the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was on 爪驻讜谉, 诪谞讜专讛 was in 讚专讜诐. 砖讜诇讞谉 had bread, that's good for the wheat, so we see that 爪驻讜谉 is good for the wheat. 砖讜诇讞谉 had the bread, that's the siman. And the 诪谞讜专讛, which had oil, which is olives, is in 讚专讜诐, so 讚专讜诐 is good. 讛讗 诪专讘讬 讚讬讚讬讛, 讜讛讗 诪专讘讬 讚讬讚讬讛, this one is good for this, this one is good for its own thing. But what do we see from here? So the she'elah is, what comes out from here, that 诪讝专讞 is good? Before we said, here it says 诪讝专讞 is good. No, before we said if the smoke turns to 诪注专讘, everyone is sad, because it's... No, if it's turning to 诪讝专讞, that means that the smoke comes from 诪注专讘, that the wind comes from 诪注专讘. It's completely the opposite here! So the Gemara says, 诇讗 拽砖讬讗, 讛讗 诇谉 讜讛讗 诇讛讜, it depends for which people. 诪讝专讞 is good for Bavel, because Bavel had a lot of water, Eretz Yisrael, it's no good. Yeah, it's dry. So that's what it is, so this one thing is... So dry and so like there's no moisture. Yeah. And, I mean, Yerushalayim is high up. So there's no, no 讬讘砖, there's no, huh? No humidity, right. This, when it says in the Maharsha that that Bava Batra 讚祝 驻\"讚, is that the Maharsha there or that's the the Gemara itself there? In 驻专拽 诇讗 讬讞驻讜专? Yeah. No, he says 诪驻讜专砖 驻专拽 诇讗 讬讞驻讜专. Stam he says it. It's his peirush. Yeah, that's what it looks. He has a peirush from Bava Basra on this. Yeah, but on the last thing only, on 砖诇讞讜 诪爪讜转讬讛诐, on the 住讬诪谉, 砖诇讞讜 诪爪讜转讬讛诐, 注诇 谞讬讚讛, 讜注诇 讚讙讬诐. To

Conclusion and Closing Remarks

finish a perek, so I think we could stop here. Anyway, it's the aggadata here is very, very hidden. Winds. Very open that this is aggadata, though. Yeah, open secrets. The desert. All right.
