180 years, right? That's what, or maybe it's 100 based on At least 93, you know that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How come he became a Tzeduki after 80 years? So I once heard from Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Deutsch. Yetzer hara. Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Deutsch said, \"How did it happen? How do you become from being a tzaddik, and he's a real tzaddik. ืืื ืจืืื, he went to the ืงืืฉื ืงืืฉืื, he came out alive and he didn't die 80 times. So what made him?\" Yeah, this guy, yeah. So he said, those guys, they remember him, how he used to talk. You can think Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Deutsch. It was just shver tzu farshteyn, hard to understand the way he talked. No, but he didn't he didn't plan to do it. It means that it came out by itself. But always came out good. But he said like this, that Huh? What? Yeah, right. Well, he's still... Full of, yeah... yeah. But so he said, he said, \"Tzeduki, we know it's Tzedukim, but ืฆืืืงื ืืืฉืื ืฆืืง. ืขืจ ืืื ืืขืืืืจื ืืขืจืขืื ืื ืืื.\" ืขืจ ืืื ืืขืืืืจื started ืฆืืง is much more righteous. He
started looking himself as a righteous person. He became righteous in his own eyes. Ah! The moment you start realizing you're righteous, because a righteous person thinks that they, you know, Moshe Rabbeinu was the biggest anav, the moment you start getting the ga'avah, so this is That's what the Gemara said, it was because of kavod? Huh? That's what the Gemara said, it's kavod? He was looking for kavod at the end? And why did what did they give him? I don't know, they didn't give him kavod. Something that I don't remember the story, but had Same idea. Same idea, yeah. A ta'avah for kavod. He became so important. Yeah. Is there such a thing as a Tzeduki nowadays, or what would you compare it to? Karaite. You know Karaite, yeah, still continues, Karaite. Cuz they only do de'oraita. Yeah. That in the time of Shimon HaTzaddik, they would put like a piece of material on on top of the head of the of the ืฉืืจ ืืืฉืชืื, of the ืฉืขืืจ ืืขืืืื. And it was red, the horns, and in his time, when he was kohen gadol, it used to get white. It used to turn white by itself. That was a siman the Eibershter forgiven the aveirot. After they threw him off? Who? Oh no, that's What was white? There was a piece of cloth made of red cloth on top of the horn, between the horns of the And it would get white. By itself. By itself, a siman, but after him, not always. ื ืจ ืืขืจืื was one of the candles of the Menorah. And they put in the same amount of oil, its light last longer. But that's only in the time of Shimon HaTzaddik. Sometimes it burned, sometimes it's extinguished. In his time, the fire on the mizbeach used to get bigger and bigger. They didn't need, like this, you know, the fire burns, wood burns up, you need more wood. They didn't never needed more wood. The only one they did this, ืืืฅ ืืฉื ื ืืืืจื ืขืฆืื, they would add the two, what's it called, logs, not logs, logs of wood, ืืงืืื ืืฆืืช ืขืฆืื. Pashut because it was a mitzvah to put it on, but not that the fire needed, it burned by itself. It was a nes, yeah. 2. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Burning day after day. Yeah, but they added every day two logs. Just for a siman. But a mitzvah, to be mekayem the mitzvah. Then it became weaker, fire. Sometimes it burned longer and it didn't need wood, sometimes it did. And all day they had to bring wood. I mean, they always were bring after him, till then, they wouldn't bring wood, then they had to bring wood, cuz they didn't know the fire might go out, so they always had to bring wood.
There was a bracha in the ืงืจืื ืขืืืจ, that you brought on the second day of Pesach, in the ืฉืชื ืืืื, that they brought on Shavuos, and the ืืื ืืคื ืื, that was there every week. What was the bracha? ืื ืืื ืฉืืืืขื ืืืืช, if a kohen got a kezayit, how much is a kezayit? A small piece. ืืฉ ืืืื ืืฉืืข, some ate one kezayit and he got full. ืืฉ ืืืืชืืจ, some got full and even had leftovers. That's how the bracha was. ืืืืื ืืืืื, after him, ื ืฉืชืืื ืืืจื, there was a klalah, a curse, in the ืขืืืจ, in the ืฉืชื ืืืื, in ืืื ืืคื ืื, ืืื ืืื ืฉืืืืขื ืืคืื ืืืฆืจื. And a kohen, first of all, they wouldn't get This, every kohen, first case, every kohen got a kezayit, how could it be? It wasn't so much that every kohen should get a kezayit. There was a bracha. Here, every kohen was able to get a ืคืื ืืืฆืจื, like a little bean. And since it was so small, and frume, frumere ืืื ืื would not fight, not push for it, cuz they don't get much anyway. The fressers, the swipers, the how do you say this in English? The gluttons. The gluttons, they used to take more. \"Well wait, why why wouldn't they even try to get the little bean?\" They had to fight for it. \"I don't fight for it, just wanted something.\" They wanted it, but they had to fight and they didn't want... so since the other guys were fighting and pushing the lines, pushed around and then... There's a
story one guy took his, and like this he grabbed away the other guy's also. They called him ืื ืืืฆื ืขื ืืื ืืืชื. ืืืฆื means a ืื ื. They called him the the ืื ื, all his life he was called a ืื ื because of this thing that he did. Where do we have a pasuk that the word ืืืฅ, ืืืฆื means a ืื ืืื? ืืืฆื means ืืืฅ, what does it mean a ืื ืืื? So it says, ืืืื, a pasuk in Tehillim, \"my God\", ืคืืื ื ืืื ืจืฉืข, \"protect me from the ืจืฉืข\", ืืืฃ ืืขืื ืืืืืฅ, \"from the hand of a ืืขืื,\" a person that does ืขืืืืช, that does bad things, \"and from a ืืืืฅ.\" What's a ืืืืฅ? ืืืืฅ is a ืื ื. Rava ืืืจ, Rava says a different, ืืืื, from a different pasuk. The pasuk says, ืืืื ืืืื, \"learn good\", ืืจืฉื ืืฉืคื, and and look for ืืฉืคื. Huh? Well, a ืื ื is ืืืฅ. Yeah. So he says, yeah. And then it says, ืืฉืจื ืืืืฅ. ืืฉืจื means \"be nice to the ืืืืฅ\". What's the ืืืืฅ? The guy who got stolen from. ืืฉืจื, be good to the ืืืืฅ, give koach, like if a Yishar koach, ืืฉืจื, give koach to the ืืืืฅ, to the one that, the victim, and don't be ืืืฉืจ, don't acknowledge, don't be good to the ืืืืฅ, to the guy, the ืื ื. But all this fits with the word that ืืืืฅ is a ืื ื. So this guy who stole someone else's share, they called him the ืืืฆื, the ืื ื all his life.
ืชื ื ืจืื ื, the ืจืื ื have learned, ืืืชื ืฉื ื ืฉืืช ืื ืฉืืขืื ืืฆืืืง, that year Shimon Hatzadik passed away, ืืืจ ืืื, he said to them, ืืฉื ื ืื ืืื ืืช. He says, \"I'm dying this year.\" ืืืจื ืื, they said, ืื ื ืืืขืช? \"How do you know that you are dying this year?\" ืืืจ ืืื, he said like this to them, ืื ืืื ืืืคืืจ ืืื ืืืืื ืื ืืงื ืืื. \"Every ืืื ืืืคืืจ when I went into the ืงืืฉ ืืงืืฉืื, I would see this old man, ืืืืฉ ืืื ืื, dressed in white, ืืขืืืฃ ืืื ืื, surrounded with white, ื ืื ืก ืขืื ืืืืฆื ืขืื, and he would come in with me and go out with me.\" \"Excuse me, could he go out in the last year of his life?\" Yeah. \"The last year...\" This is not... this is Shimon Hatzadik. This was a ืืืจืื, this is an image of of some ืืืจืื he saw. \"Who was it, Eliyahu Hanavi?\" No, it could also be. ืขืชืืง ืืืืื, yeah. I know, it's a, ืืฆืืืืช, I don't know which ืืืจืื. \"I mean, that just means old man, right?\" Yeah, yeah. I I saw this old man, ืืืืฉ ืฉืืืจืื, dressed in black, ืืขืืืฃ ืฉืืืจืื, and surrounded in black, ื ืื ืก ืขืื, he went in with me, ืืื ืืฆื ืขืื, he went in with me, but he didn't come out with me.\" ืืืืจ ืืจืื, so after ืืื ืืื, ืืื ืฉืืขืช ืืืื, he got sick for seven days, ืืืช, and he died. \"How old was he when he died?\" Huh? \"How old was he?\" I don't know. I don't know if it says. Maybe it says, I don't know. Since he died, they stopped using the ืฉื ืืืคืืจืฉ in the Birkat Kohanim, when the bracha that they said, because his time that people were better, as soon as he died they said, \"A new tekufah, a new period, and things changed and...\" \"So which shem at the first, Hashem?\" No, Yud-Kei-Vav-Kei the real way. We don't say Yud-Kei-Vav-Kei. \"They said...\" Yeah, we don't even know how to say it. \"Right, that's what...\" No, we don't we don't know the nekudot. \"That's when they stopped using it always, for anything?\" Yeah. Yeah. Zogt di Gemara vayter. Now, this next piece in in Ein Yaakov is not in the Gemara. Actually, not in the Gemara Yoma. We're learning Yoma, but since it mentions Shimon Hatzadik, so he quotes here from the Gemara Menachot. So it says here in small words, ืืืช ืืืจืืืชื ืืื ืืืกืืช ืื ืืืช, ืื ืืืช, ืฉืื ื ืกืคืืืก, not here, ืืจืืื ืืืืจื ืืื. It says, \"I added it here, ืืืืืช ืื ืขื ืืื ื ืืืงืื ืืื, so all the inyanim of Shimon Hatzadik should be in the same place.\" And really this is the Gemara in in Menachot. The Gemara there starts to say, The Gemara wants to bring a re'iyah that ืืืช ืืื ืื was not a house of ืขืืืื ืืจื. As we'll see, Chonio built a Beit Hamikdash, he called it, or whatever it is, in Mitzrayim, a dup- duplicate of the Beit Hamikdash, and they brought korbanot there. And there's a big machloket, was it to the Aibershter, or was it ืขืืืื ืืจื? Now, even if it was to the Aibershter, it was asur. You're not allowed to bring korbanot in... in ืืืืกื ืืจืื ืฉื ืืฆืจืื, in Alexandria. Yeah. Even if it was for Hashem, it's still an aveirah, because it's ืฉืืืื ืืืฅ, you're not allowed to shachat a korban out of the Beit Hamikdash. But at least it's not ืขืืืื ืืจื, it's a lav, it's it's a lav. Karet, it's a it's a lav. But there's a machloket: was it l'shem Shamayim, ืืฉื ืืฉื? What means l'shem Shamayim? His name was Chonio. Chonio was the son of Shimon Hatzadik, and the Gemara tells the story what happened here. This is Zevachim? I mean Menachot, Zevachim, no? No, this is a mistake. Oh, I liked it. Zevachim. It's the Gemara. It says on top Zevachim, it's supposed to say Menachot. Oh, it says on top Zevachim, wow. Oh, it is Menachot here. They fixed it, it's a new print, this is a copy of the old print. Yes, so he wants to prove that this ืืืช ืืื ืื was not for avodah zarah. What do we What's the story with this Chonio? What's the difference between ืืฉื ืืฉื and l'shem Shamayim? No, I said l'shem Shamayim, it's an expression we're using, you do something good, you do it l'shem Shamayim. You do something good, so he didn't do l'shem Shamayim, but he was He meant, you know, like to Hashem, which was an aveirah, but it wasn't l'shem Shamayim. We'll soon see it wasn't l'shem Shamayim, it was for his own kavod. ืชื ืื, it says in a ืืจืืืชื, ืืืชื ืฉื ื ืฉืืช ืื ืฉืืขืื ืืฆืืืง, that year that ืฉืืขืื ืืฆืืืง passed away, ืืฉืขืช ืคืืืจืชื, when he was dying, ืืืจ ืืื, he said to his children: ืืื ืื ืื ื ืืฉืืฉ ืชืืชื. He
had two sons: Shemai and Chonio. And he said Chonio should be the Kohen Gadol. He gave ืฆืืืื, even though Shemai was older, he said Chonio should be. They were both pretty ืฉืืืืืข ืืืจื, both pretty big ืขื ืืืจืฆืื. But so he said, \"I want Chonio to be.\" ื ืชืงื ื ืื ืฉืืขื ืืืื, his brother ืฉืืขื was jealous, ืฉืืื ืืืื ืืื ื ืฉืชื ืฉื ืื ืืืืฆื, two and a half years older than him, and he wanted to be the Kohen Gadol. There isn't there a process that has to happen? Isn't there a vote? Yeah, but if the Kohen Gadol How could the father do it the wrong way? It wasn't the wrong way, he thought they would teach him. Yeah, but you still got to vote, you could say, \"I want...\" Well, you have to have an, er, what would you say, an ืืกืืื from the ืกื ืืืจืื. But if he said, probably the ืกื ืืืจืื would have been ืืกืืื. So they would have voted or they would I don't know if it's a vote, they have to look into it and they have to give an ืืกืืื, they have to give their approval. Is that is there a process that has to be done? Yeah. Is a way to skirt the voting? But, but ืืคืืขื, ืืคืืขื, it's a ืฆืืืื. Yeah, but that's his son Because it No, but it says ืืืื ืืืืื ืืืืื, ืจืฉืดื says, that, er no, ืืื ืื I mean, ืืื ืื, that if they're ืจืืื, the son is ืจืืื, the son is first. So he thought the son is ืฉืืื, it's, I guess if he didn't know so much, but they're going to teach him. So it says if the son is ืจืืื in yirat shamayim, so you could teach him, but here he wasn't You said, \"Not even in yirat shamayim.\" We'll see, we'll see, yeah, yeah, but he thought probably that there will be. So Shimi was jealous. ืืืจ ืื, so he wanted to get it away from his brother Chonyo. So he says to his brother ืืื ืื, ืืื ืืืืืื ืกืืจ ืขืืืื, \"Come, I'm going to teach you how to do the avodah, I'll show you.\" What he meant to do is he's going to teach him something stupid and the guy will do it and then they'll throw him out. Throw him out, or he won't make it through the No, this is not Yom Kippur yet. Right. ืืืืืฉื ืืืื ืงืื, he said put he put him on a leather jacket, ืืืืจื ืืฆืืฆืื, and he put on a gartel, like not a gartel like we have, but he put on like a a belt, a leather belt, actually was a woman's belt. ืืืขืืืื ืืฆื ืืืื, and he put him by the ืืืื and he said, \"Here, this is how you do the avodah.\" And then, ืืืจ ืืื ืืืืื ืืืื ืื, and he ran to the other ืืื ืื and he said, \"ืจืื ืื ื ืืจ ืืงืืื ืื ืืืืืืชื! Look, look what this guy did! Look how he's doing the avodah. You know why he put this on? Because he promised his wife he's going to wear her clothes for the avodah! So that's why he put it on!\" ืืืืืืชื? ืืืืืืชื means to his beloved. Hashem? No, to his wife! ื ืืจ ืืงืืื ืื, this guy made a
promise to his wife that if he's comes Kohen Gadol, he's going to wear his her clothes. And this what he put on, and that's what he's, you see what a stupid guy! \"ืืืชื ืืืื, and I'll wear it, ืืืชื ืืืื ืฉืืฉืืฉ ืืืืื ื ืืืืื, that day that I'm going to start with becoming a ืืื ืืืื, ืืืืืฉ, I'll dress, ืืื ืงืื ืฉืื ืืืืืืจ ืืฆืืฆืืื, I'm going to put on your your jacket, I'm going to put on your gartel, your belt.\" The rumor was about her shoes. The rumor, yeah. ืืงืฉื ืืืื ืืืื ืื ืืืืจืื, so his brother, the other kohanim wanted to kill him. ืจืฅ ืืคื ืืื, they chased him, he ran away, ืืืื, and he ran away to Alexandria shel Mitzrayim, to Alexandria, ืืื ื ืฉื ืืืื, and he built a mizbeach there, ืืืขืื ืขืืื ืืฉืื ืขืืืื ืืจื, this opinion says, and he started bringing korbanot for Avodah zarah. ืืฉืฉืืขื ืืืืื ืืืืจ, ืืืจื, they said like this: ืื ืื ืฉืื ืืจื ืื ืื, this guy, this Shimi, he didn't even become Kohen Gadol, and he was jealous of wanting to be ืืื ืืืื, ืืืืจื ืื ืื ืืื ืืืื ื ืขื ืืืช ืืื ืืืื, that if someone is a is in the position, in other words, what they wanted to say, we learn out from here, be careful, someone is in a position, don't fire him from the position, you know what agmat nefesh you're going to do him? Look, this guy had agmat nefesh without even becoming, just why he didn't become. Someone already gets the position, so we should be careful not to do it. That's what they learned out. But this whole story, ืืืจื ืจืื ืืืืจ, that's the opinion of Rabbi Meir. ืืืจ ืืื ืจืื ืืืืื, Rabbi Yehuda says, ืื ืื ืืื ืืขืฉื, that's not the story. Shimon Hatzadik said Chonyo should became Kohen Gadol. Chonyo didn't want, for this reason, ืฉืืื ืฉืืขืื ืืืื ืืืื ืืื ื ืฉืชื ืฉื ืื ืืืืฆื, because his brother was older two and a half years. So what happened? So Shimi started becoming, they were going to make Shimi because Chonyo didn't want. When Shimon was going to become Shimi become Kohen Gadol, Chonyo, who could have been and gave it up, got jealous. When it came lema'aseh, got jealous. ืืืจ, he said, so now since he got Chonyo got Shimi got jealous on Chonyo, Chonyo on Shimi, I meant. ืืืจ ืื, so he said, ืื ืืืืืื ืกืืจ ืขืืืื. So Chonyo said to Shimi, the same story, \"I'm going to teach you what to do.\" ืืืืืฉื ืืืื ืงืื ืืืืจื ืืฆืืฆืื, so he dressed him with this clothes, ืืืขืืืื ืืฆื ืืืืื. ืืืืจ ืืื ืืืืื ืืืื ืื, then he came and said to the ืืื ืื, ืจืื ืื ื ืืจ ืื ืืงืืื ืืืืืืชื. Look what he promised his wife and he did. He promised his wife, ืืืชื ืืืื ืฉืืฉืชืืฉ ืืืืื ื ืืืืื, that day that I'm going to become ืืื ืืืื, ืืืืฉ ืืืื ืงืื ืฉืื ืืืืืืจ ืืฆืืฆืื ืฉืื, I'm going to put on your clothes. Yeah. So now, what happened? ืืืงืฉื ืืืื ืืืื ืื ืืืืจืื, so they wanted to kill him. So now, since Chonio was so Shimei told the kohanim that it was all Chonio's fault. Chonio is the one told me. So ืืืงืฉื ืืืจืื ืืช ืืื ืื, so now they wanted to kill Chonio. ืจืฅ ืืคื ืืื, he ran away, ืืจืฆื ืืืจืื, they ran after him. Who wanted to kill him? The kohanim? Yeah. Why? Because he tricked, yeah, he tricked the other guy and he got him to the Just two brothers, why do the kohanim care? Yeah, good. No, so he wanted to get him to to do avodah in the wrong way. So they were upset. They're upset, yeah. So he ran away, ืืจืฅ, so that he ran to the ืืืช ืืืื, house of the king. ืืจืฆื ืืืจืื, and they chased him. ืื ืืจืืื ืืืชื, ืืื, ืืืืจ ืืื, and anybody who saw, oh, this is the guy! And he ran, ืืื ืืืืืกื ืืจืื ืฉื ืืฆืจืื, he went to Alexandria, ืืื ื ืืืื, he built a ืืืื, ืืืขืื ืขืืื ืืฉื ืฉืืื, and there he put up for the for the Baashefer.
