Chanukah: Part 3

Why the mitzvah of ner Chanukah -- unlike the menorah in the Beis Hamikdash -- will never become batal, even in the days of Mashiach

Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Kislev · 17:47

On the Ramban's comment to Aharon that the mitzvah born from lighting the menorah is greater than the nesi'im's korbanos, and how the number eight, the mitzvah of milah, and lighting outside the door at dusk all point to a light strong enough to penetrate the darkness of galus itself.

Why the Mitzvah of Ner Chanukah Will Never Become Batal

that you don't find in most of the other Yomim Tovim. As it says in the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 转注谞讬转, 讗诐 讻诇 讛诪讜注讚讬诐 讬讛讬讜 讘讟诇讬诐, 讞谞讜讻讛 讜驻讜专讬诐 诇讗 谞讘讟诇讜, that even if other Yomim Tovim will be 讘讟诇, Chanukah and Purim will not be 讘讟诇. So we see that Chanukah is one of those Yomim Tovim that we are assured that will not be 讘讟诇. And it says in the Ramban in the beginning of Parashat Beha'alotcha, when Hashem told Aharon that he shouldn't feel bad that even though the 谞砖讬讗讬诐 they all brought 拽专讘谞讜转 for 讞谞讜讻转 讛诪讝讘讞 and he didn't, so Hashem said to him don't feel bad because you have the special mitzvah of lighting the 诪谞讜专讛, 讜砖诇讱 讙讚讜诇讛 诪砖诇讛诐, and yours is greater than theirs. And the Ramban asks the kashya, why did Hashem 讚讜拽讗 comfort him with the mitzvah of lighting the candles? There are many things that the 讻讛谞讬诐 do in the Beit Hamikdash, that Aharon did in the Beit Hamikdash, that the 谞砖讬讗讬诐 didn't do. He could have told him that you bring the 拽讟讜专转 or other things. Why did he mention the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讛诪谞讜专讛? And the Ramban answers that the hint here is to the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛. That when he comforted Aharon that his is greater than theirs, he didn't mean davka the mitzvah of lighting the menorah in the Beit Hamikdash, but he meant the mitzvah that came out, that came as a result of lighting the menorah in the Beit Hamikdash, and this is the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛. And as the Ramban says that the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛, 讗讬谞诐 讘讟诇讬诐 诇注讜诇诐, they will never become 讘讟诇. And he says that 谞讜讛讙 讛讜讗 讗祝 诇讗讞专 讞讜专讘谉 讘讙诇讜转讬谞讜. This mitzvah goes on even after the 讞讜专讘谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 when we are in galus. Not like the neiros of the 诪拽讚砖, where he says that 讻砖讗讬谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 拽讬讬诐, when we don't have a 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, 讗祝 讛谞专讜转 讘讟诇讜转, so too is the mitzvah of lighting the 诪谞讜专讛 讘讟诇, but the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛, they will continue forever. They go through even in the time when we have no 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, even in the time of galus. Even though the 谞专讜转 讛诪谞讜专讛, so to speak, are an extension of the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讛诪拽讚砖, because the reason we have the mitzvah of lighting the candles of the 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 is because of the nes that happened with the 谞专讜转 讛诪拽讚砖. Nevertheless, we see that there is a maalah in the 谞专讜转 砖诇 讞谞讜讻讛 even over the mitzvah of lighting the menorah in the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖. One of the reasons for that is, being that the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 is a 诪爪讜讛 诪讚专讘谞谉, and we know as the Chazal say, that Hashem says, 讞诪讜专讬诐 注诇讬 讚讘专讬 住讜驻专讬诐, that to me the words of the Rabbanan are even stricter than the words of the de'Oraysa, and 注专讬讘讬诐 注诇讬 讚讘专讬 住讜驻专讬诐, the words of the sofrim, which means the 诪爪讜讜转 诪讚专讘谞谉 are more beloved to me than the 诪爪讜讜转 诪讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, as this inyan is explained in many sefarim, so therefore the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 has a certain maalah over the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讛诪拽讚砖 and over other Yomim Tovim, because this is a 诪爪讜讛 诪讚专讘谞谉. But in addition to that, there is more that we see in the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛, because we see another interesting thing in the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛.

What the Number Eight Represents

The Yom Tov of Chanukah lasts for eight days. We light eight candles. We start with one, and then we continue to two, three, four, till finally we come to the climax, which is eight candles. The nerot of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 were only seven candles. The fact that the 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 were eight candles shows on a great maalah and a great significance in the mitzvah of lighting the 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛. Because we find in sefarim that the number eight has a very special significance. As it says in the Kli Yakar on the 驻住讜拽 讜讬讛讬 讘讬讜诐 讛砖诪讬谞讬, which refers to the eighth day of the 诪诇讜讗讬诐. First there were 砖讘注转 讬诪讬 讛诪诇讜讗讬诐, there were seven days when they put up the Mishkan every morning, and they took it apart every day, and there were certain korbanot they brought during the day, and those seven days were called the 砖讘注转 讬诪讬 讛诪诇讜讗讬诐. But then it says 讜讬讛讬 讘讬讜诐 讛砖诪讬谞讬, it was the eighth day of the 诪诇讜讗讬诐, that's when they put up the Mishkan permanently, and that's when it says that the fire came down min hashamayim and the Shechinah rested in the Mishkan. So the Kli Yakar asks, why does the Torah refer to this day as the eighth day? When we say this is the eighth, it seems that if it's a 讛诪砖讱, it's one continuation of the previous seven days. Now the previous days were 砖讘注转 讬诪讬 讛诪诇讜讗讬诐, and we know the 诪诇讜讗讬诐 only lasted for seven days, as the pasuk says 砖讘注转 讬诪讬诐 讬诪诇讗 讗转 讬讚讻诐, seven days he will fill your hands, which means there are only seven days of 诪诇讜讗讬诐. The eighth day was really not the eighth day of 诪诇讜讗讬诐, but it was a day after the seven days of 诪诇讜讗讬诐. So why does the pasuk refer to it as 讬讜诐 讛砖诪讬谞讬? And he answers, because the Torah wants to tell us the specialty of that day, and that is because it was the eighth day. Since on that day the pasuk says 讻讬 讛讬讜诐 讛砖诐 谞专讗讛 讗诇讬讻诐, because today Hashem will be seen to you. So you want to say why was it on that day? He says because this was the eighth day. And he explains that the number eight shows on a special madregah, and he says 讻诇 诪住驻专 砖讘注 讞讜诇 讜诪住驻专 砖诪讬谞讬 拽讜讚砖. The number seven is chol, and the number eight is holy. This is similar to what it says in the 砖讗诇讜转 讜转砖讜讘讜转 讛专砖讘状讗 讞诇拽 讗壮 住讬诪谉 讟壮. He says that seven is a 讛讬拽祝, and the eighth is a madregah which is higher than the 讛讬拽祝, which is the 砖讜诪专 讛讛讬拽祝. And in simple terms it means that we see that a lot of things are divided in seven. There are seven days a week, there are seven years to a 砖诪讬讟讛, there are seven 砖诪讬讟讜转 to a 讬讜讘诇, there are seven heavens. So we see a lot of times that seven shows on a complete cycle. The number eight, that shows on a level which is higher than the regular cycle, using the terms the way it's explained in Chassidishe sefarim, that seven shows on a regular 诪讚专讙讛 of 住讚专 讛砖转诇砖诇讜转, and eight shows on a 诪讚专讙讛 of the 诇诪注诇讛 诪住讚专 讛砖转诇砖诇讜转. That's why we find in the Gemara that the 讻讬谞讜专, the harp that they had in the Beis Hamikdash was made of 砖讘注讛 谞讬诪讬谉, of seven strings, but the 讻讬谞讜专 砖诇 讬诪讜转 讛诪砖讬讞, the harp that will be in the time of Mashiach, will be 砖诇 砖诪讜谞讛 谞讬诪讬谉, will be of eight strings, as the Gemara says in 注专讻讬谉 讚祝 讬状讙 注诪讜讚 讘壮. This also shows that in the time of Mashiach we will have such a high 诪讚专讙讛, so much kedushah will be in the world, and that is hinted in the number eight. That's why we also find in the Gemara that there are 砖诪讜谞讛 谞住讬讻讬 讗讚诐, seven special people which are called 谞住讬讻讬诐, and the eighth one is Mashiach. So we see that the number eight has a special significance.

Milah on the Eighth Day and an Even Deeper Connection to Hashem

We also find that the mitzvah of milah is to be done on the eighth day, and the reason is 讻讚讬 砖讬注讘讜专 注诇讬讜 砖讘转 讗讞转, in order that one Shabbos should pass. Because when you have eight days, automatically you have every day of the week plus you are over that, so if you're going to do the bris milah on the eighth day, automatically, whichever day the child was born, you had a Shabbos. But it says in sefarim that the peshat here is not only that you should have a Shabbos pass, but 讬注讘讜专 注诇讬讜 砖讘转 讗讞转 means that this goes 注讜讘专, this goes past, this goes higher than the 诪讚专讙讛 of Shabbos. Shabbos is the seventh day, the seven shows for the completion of the 讛讬拽祝 of the cycle, so it's the highest 诪讚专讙讛 of the cycle and therefore Shabbos is the highest 诪讚专讙讛 of the creation. But nevertheless Shabbos in itself is also, so to speak, part of the creation, as the Chazal say 诪讛 讛讬讛 讛注讜诇诐 讞住专? 诪谞讜讞讛. What was the world missing when 砖讘转 came? Menuchah, rest. 讘讗 砖讘转 讘讗 诪谞讜讞讛. When Shabbos came, rest came. So this is the last thing that was needed for the creation. So it comes out that Shabbos, even though this is the 砖诇诪讜转 讛讘专讬讗讛, this is the completion of the briyah, this is the highest madreigah of the briyah, nevertheless this ended and finished the briyah itself, the creation itself. The number eight represents a madreigah which is higher than the briyah, which is higher than the 讛讬拽祝, higher than the regular cycle of seven. And that is the meaning that milah has to be done 讘讬讜诐 讛砖诪讬谞讬, on the eighth day, 讻讚讬 砖讬注讘讜专 注诇讬讜 砖讘转 讗讞转, it means that the madreigah of milah represents a madreigah even higher than the madreigah of Shabbos. The connection that a Yid gets to Hashem through the mitzvah of milah is a deeper and stronger connection than a person gets even through the mitzvah of Shabbos. And as we actually see it, that the connection a Yid gets to Hashem through the mitzvah of milah becomes actually part of the person's body. Other mitzvot, which also make a connection between the Yid and Hashem, is a connection through an action that the Yid does. But that connection, which means that mitzvah, is not part of his body. It is done through the body, but not that is part of the body. In other words, the body is the thing that fulfills the mitzvah, but the body is not the cheftza of the mitzvah, it is not the object of the mitzvah. But the mitzvah of milah is that the body becomes actually the object of the mitzvah itself. And this brit remains with the person forever. So the connection a Yid gets with the brit milah is a higher madreigah even than the madreigah of Shabbos, and therefore it says it has to be 讻讚讬 砖讬注讘讜专 注诇讬讜 砖讘转 讗讞转, it should be higher than Shabbos, and therefore it is on the eighth day. And that's what the Kli Yakar says, that that's why when the pasuk says that the Shechinah came down, it came down 讘讬讜诐 讛砖诪讬谞讬 to show that that madregah has a connection to the madregah of 砖诪讬谞讬. And this shows that the mitzvah of nerot Chanukah represents such a high level of kedushah that Hashem brings down into this world, such a great level that is represented in the number eight, and that is why the mitzvah of Chanukah is eight days. And because of that it is even greater than the mitzvah that was in the Beit HaMikdash to light the nerot hamenorah. The nerot hamenorah were mamshich, brought down a light into this world, kedushah into this world, in such a way as the Gemara says that 注讚讜转 讛讬讗 诇讘讗讬 注讜诇诐 砖讛砖讻讬谞讛 砖专讜讬讛 讘讬砖专讗诇, that the light of the menorah was the 注讚讜转, the witness, the testimony to the world that the Shechinah is amongst the Yidden. That means that the light of the menorah brought the Shechinah into the world. It connected the Yidden to the Shechinah. It connected Klal Yisrael to the Shechinah. But the connection that Klal Yisrael gets to the Shechinah through the mitzvah of nerot Chanukah is even a deeper connection. And that is the reason why we say that the mitzvah of nerot Chanukah will last forever, because this is such a deep connection, such an essential connection, such a great level of light that comes into the world, greater even than the nerot hamikdash, and therefore they will last forever. When the light is not so strong, so to speak, when the level that comes down is not so great, when the connection is not so deep, then certain times it's there, certain times it's not there. So when the Beit HaMikdash was destroyed, we don't have the mitzvah of nerot hamikdash anymore. But the level of nerot Chanukah being that it's so great, even in the time of the churban, as the Ramban says, in the time of galut, when we are on a very low madregah, nevertheless, this is such a strong light that could even penetrate, so to speak, even through the galut, through the darkness of galut, and it exists then, also.

Bringing Light Into the Darkness of Galut and the Reshut HaRabim

That's why it says that the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 is to put it 注诇 驻转讞 讘讬转讜 诪讘讞讜抓. You should put it by the door of your house outside. And when do you have to light the candles? 诪砖转砖拽注 讛讞诪讛, when the sun sets. And the Gemara says it has to go on 注讚 讚讻诇讬讗 专讙诇讗 讚转专诪讜讚讗讬, till the feet of the 转专诪讜讚讬诐 will stop, which means that there were people called 转专诪讜讚讬诐 who used to stay out late in the street. They were the last ones to leave the street, so it says you have to light the Chanukah candles from when the sun sets till the time when the 转专诪讜讚讬诐 leave the street. And that's where we get the shiur of how long the Chanukah candles have to burn. The candles of the Beit Hamikdash were lit during the day. The candles of the Beit Hamikdash were lit inside, but the candles of Chanukah are lit 注诇 驻转讞 讘讬转讜 诪讘讞讜抓, by the door of the house, on the outside, and it is done in a time when 转砖拽注 讞诪讛, when the sun sets. This is all connected with what he said before. The level of kedushah that comes down through the 谞专讜转 讛诪拽讚砖 is a level that could come at a time when it's light, which means when there is a spiritual light, so then this is a greater light that brings more light into the world. But to penetrate into the darkness, that even in the darkness of galut that we should still be able to bring down the light of Hashem, that is only done with the 谞专讜转 砖诇 讞谞讜讻讛. And therefore the mitzvah itself was told to be done in such a way which represents and hints to this inyan, that you have to light the 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 诪砖转砖拽注 讛讞诪讛, when the sun sets, when it's dark, because this level of light could penetrate even the darkness. And where do you light it? 注诇 驻转讞 讘讬转讜, by the door of the house, 诪讘讞讜抓, on the outside. The purpose is to bring the light even into the outside. The outside means the 专砖讜转 讛专讘讬诐. Inside is the 专砖讜转 讛讬讞讬讚, the private domain, and the outside is the 专砖讜转 讛专讘讬诐, the public domain. Now this represents the inyan of kedushah and the opposite of kedushah. 专砖讜转 讛讬讞讬讚, it says in the sefarim, represents the inyan of 专砖讜转 讬讞讬讚讜 砖诇 注讜诇诐, 讬讞讬讚, the single One, the private One, that is Hashem. So 专砖讜转 讛讬讞讬讚 represents the reshut of Hashem. 专砖讜转 讛专讘讬诐, the reshut, the domain of the many, that represents all other things which are not kedushah, because kedushah is always achdut, is unity. Other things which are not kedushah are not unity, but they are 专讘讬诐, they are represented in the idea of many. So the 专砖讜转 讛专讘讬诐, that represents all other things which are not kedushah, because kedushah is always achdut, is unity. Other things which are not kedushah are not unity, but they are 专讘讬诐, they are represented in the idea of many. So the 专砖讜转 讛专讘讬诐 represents the inyan of the opposite of kedushah. The 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 have such a koach even to bring the light into the 专砖讜转 讛专讘讬诐, so to speak, into the place where there is no kedushah, and nevertheless to bring the light in there. And this is also connected to what the Gemara says, that the time for the 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛 is 注讚 讚讻诇讬讗 专讙诇讗 讚转专诪讜讚讗讬, till the feet of the 转专诪讜讚讬诐 are finished, this is also a remez to the same inyan. The nerot of Chanukah have the power of bringing kedushah even to a level where there is no kedushah, where there is darkness, where there is no Shechinah, and nevertheless to bring the Shechinah there too. 转专诪讜讚讗讬, it says in Tehilat Yaakov, the the Sefer Maleh HaRo'im, so Kohelet Yaakov, in the 注专讱 转专诪讜讚讗讬 he explains that 转专诪讜讚讗讬, 转专诪讜讚 are the same otiot, the same letters as 诪讜专讚讜转. 诪讜专讚讜转 comes from the word 诪讜专讚, which means to revolt. And even in a level which revolts against Hashem, the koach of the nerot of Chanukah is 讻诇讬讗 专讙诇讗 讚转专诪讜讚讗讬. It has the power to stop it, to finish the feet of the 转专诪讜讚讬诐, to take away this concept of 诪专讬讚讛 in Hashem. And this is also mashma from the Gemara Yevamot 讚祝 讟状讝 注诪讜讚 讘壮, that there were the 注讘讚讬 砖诇诪讛, the servants, the slaves of Shlomo, that were 诪讜专讚, that revolted against Shlomo, they got mixed in among the 转专诪讜讚讬诐. So we see that even 讘驻砖讟讜转, 讘讙砖诪讬讜转, the 转专诪讜讚讬诐 represent 诪专讬讚讛, represent revolt. And this is the greatness of the mitzvah of 谞专讜转 讞谞讜讻讛, that there is such a light that comes down into this world, such a spiritual light that brings the light even into the galut, brings the light even amongst the 转专诪讜讚讬诐, and it has the power of bringing the Shechinah and the kedushah even in such a level. And that's why it says that when Mashiach will come, even if 讻诇 讛诪讜注讚讬诐 注转讬讚讬诐 诇讘讟诇, nevertheless Chanukah will remain, because the pshat as it says, is one of the pshatim, what does it mean that the 诪讜注讚讬诐, the Yamim Tovim will become 讘讟诇 when Mashiach will come? It doesn't mean that it actually will become 讘讟诇, the Torah will not change. What it means is that whenever we celebrate a Yom Tov and we keep the mitzvot of the Yom Tov, a certain level of kedushah comes into this world. At the time of 诇注转讬讚 诇讘讜讗, there will be so much kedushah in the world, that we will not really feel the significance of the Yom Tov, meaning the significance of that level of kedushah that comes down on the Yom Tov. But the kedushah that comes down during the Yom Tov of Chanukah, through the mitzvah of Chanukah, is such a high level of kedushah, that even in the time of Mashiach, when we will celebrate Chanukah, we will feel it as a special Yom Tov, because this will be a special madregah of light. And then we will actually feel it. Now when we say that through the mitzvah of Chanukah a special light comes into the world, we don't see it, we don't feel it, only great tzadikim probably, they are the ones that see it and feel it, but ordinary people don't. When Mashiach will come, all the people will feel this great level of kedushah that comes into this world, and therefore, even though we will constantly feel a high level of kedushah, when the Yom Tov of Chanukah will come around, we will feel the special level and light of kedushah that will come into this world through the mitzvah of Chanukah, because this light is such a great light, in such a high level, and brings down so much kedushah into this world, that even at that time, this will be something special. And that's one of the peshatim in this 诪讗诪专 讞讝状诇 that even if all the Yom Tovim will be batal, nevertheless Chanukah, and the same applies to Purim, but that's not important to this shiur, will not be batal, because the level of kedushah that comes down through the mitzvah of Chanukah is so great, that even then, it will be considered a great madregah.
