Why 'Eight' Is Both Above the World and Inside It
Part of Likkutei Sichos: Volume 17 · 46:26
A chassidus shiur tracing a sicha on Parshas Shemini, unpacking why the number eight represents a level of Elokus entirely transcendent of creation yet still named for its connection to the seven days before it. Weaving in Tanya's teaching that the future revelation of Hashem's glory depends specifically on our avodah during golus, the shiur explains how mesirat nefesh born of concealment — and the halachos of kosher versus treif animals — are themselves the vehicle for revealing that higher light within the world itself.

The nekudah, the deep point that's in all the inyanim of the same סדרה is מרומז in the נאָמען פון דער סדרה, is מרומז in the name. וואָרעם די שמות זענען דאָך נעמען על פי תורה, since the names are על פי תורה, so these are the names. So the name of the סדרה tells us what the meaning of all the things in the סדרה are, the nekudah of what they are. Sometimes we find that if you want to look at the connection, you find a closer connection between the beginning of one סדרה to the end of the previous סדרה. Like the Rebbe is going to say when he gave Parashat Shemini. The end of Parashat Tzav talks about the seven days of מלואים. So there's this closer connection seemingly between the beginning of this סדרה to the end of the previous סדרה more than the beginning of this סדרה to the end of this own סדרה. Nevertheless, וויבאַלד אַז די פרשיות זענען סמוכות איינע פון דער צווייטער, און סמוכים איז אַ הלכה, אַ לימוד על פי תורה, and and since they're close, the end of the previous סדרה is very close to the beginning of this סדרה, and closeness in Torah has a meaning, בעת אַז צווישן דער ערשטער פרשה און דער לעצטער סדרה, לעצטער אין איין סדרה איז פֿאַראַן כּמה פרשיות און מעשיות אינדערמיט, while if you talk about the first part of a פרשה and the end of a סדרה, the end of a סדרה, they're not so close. So they're not even so connected, seemingly. ווי אָבער די נקודה המשותפת הנ״ל פֿאַראַן דאַכט זיך ביי די פרשיות, אפילו ניט סמוכות, וואָס זענען אין דער זעלבער סדרה, nevertheless, this one common denominator that we're talking about, that's hinted in the name, is מפורש in the different parts of the same סדרה, the beginning to the end even though they're not close, more than the beginning of this סדרה to the end of the previous סדרה. פון דעם איז אויך נוגע צו אונדזער סדרה, and that means in our סדרה. If you look at it, the beginning of this פרשה, of this סדרה, that's not, sometimes we use the word פרשה or סדרה, we mean the same thing. Here it's בדווקא, בדיוק. The סדרה and the פרשיות are the different sections in the סדרה גופא. So the beginning of this week's סדרה seems to have much more connection to the end of the previous sedra, because the previous sedra talks about the seven days and this more than the beginning of Shemini to the end of Shemini. What does the end of Shemini talk about? Which animals are kosher, which are not kosher, the word kashrut. און כּמו מובן אין דער פשטות, you look at it simple, אַז ויהי ביום השמיני קומט באמת שמיני ל... שבעת ימי המלואים, שבעת, סיום פון די פריעדיקע סדרה, because when it starts off the eighth day, comes right after the end of the previous sedra which talks about the seven days of מלואים. But ביום השמיני has seemingly no connection to this animal you could eat, this animal you can't, is it kashrut. וויבאַלד אַז יעדע סדרה האָט אַ נקודה מיוחדת, since every sedra has its own point, וואָס אין איר איז זי אויסגעטיילט פון אַלע אַנדערע סדרות, that this point makes it different than every other סדרה, איז פאַרשטאַנדיק אַז די פרשיות ויהי ביום השמיני און זאת החיה האָבן ביידע איין תוכן מיוחד, so we have to understand, we have to say that ויהי ביום השמיני, which is the פרשת, the the inyan of שמיני למלואים, and the פרשה זאת החיה must have some common denominator, וואָס איז ניט אין דער פרשה צו פֿון יענע סדרה, which is not in the פרשה צו where it talks about where he said take Aharon in the seven days of מלואים. And this nekudah that we're saying that is in the whole sedra of Shemini, which connects Shemini to זאת החיה, is all hinted in the name Shemini, because that's the name of the sedra. What does דאָזיקע mean? This. Huh? This specific, yeah. So you just said that what's in Shemini from beginning to end, from the first part to the last part, is a stronger connection, even though seemingly it doesn't look it, than what looks like is connected to the end of the previous sedra. And it's all hinted in the name Shemini, because that's the name. פון דעם וואָס אין דער נאָמען פון דער סדרה איז ניט אָנגעדייט אַז דאָ רעדט זיך וועגן שמיני למלואים, now when we talk about Shemini, what was the eighth, was the eighth of what? Of the מלואים. But we don't we don't in the name of the sedra, the word שמיני למלואים is not there. It's just Shemini. In the name, it doesn't even say that it's the eighth day. The סדרה is not called יום. It could have been called ויהי ביום השמיני, it could have been called ביום השמיני. And we find סדרות called with two words: לך לך, כי תצא, כי תבא, I mean we find the סדרות. So this could have been called יום השמיני. It's בפועל not called, it's called שמיני. That means that איז מובן אַז דאָ איז נוגע דער כּללותדיקע ענין פון שמיני, that the נקודה here is not that it was the seven, the eighth day of something, or the eighth day. It's the eighth, an אַכטער. און ניט דער פרטותדיקער ענין פון מלואים אָדער ימים אין וועלכן ער איז דער אַכטער, not נוגע that it's the eighth in what, in the eighth in this and the eighth in that. It's בכלל the ענין of eight. אויפֿן אופן המבואר לעיל סימן based on what was said before, איז א חילוק צווישן די שייכות צום סיום אז עס שליסט פון פריער, און די שייכות צו אן אנדער פרשה אין דער סדרה גופא, based on what we said before that there is more connection to the end of the same פרשה than to the than to the פרשה before, קומט אויס אז פרשת קח את אהרן פון דער פריעדיקע סדרה that the פרשה that talks about the priests, etcetera, that he said take אהרן and bring him in to do the עבודה in שבעת ימי המילואים, is בנוגע נקודה משותפת is a הקדמה צו שמיני. So that פרשה is not part of שמיני. It comes before שמיני. So it's an introduction to שמיני. And it's not part of שמיני. שמיני is a separate ענין. It's a separate סדרה, it's a separate ענין. און בדוגמא ווי דאס איז אין פשטות, if you look even at פשוטו, אז די שבעת ימי המילואים איז an הקדמה to יום השמיני. The seven days is an introduction to the eighth. So here the previous פרשה is an introduction to this פרשה. זאת החיה which talks about which animals are kosher, is part of Shemini. It's part of the סדרה שמיני, so it's part of the concept of Shemini. While what it says in the שבעת ימי המילואים is an introduction to this inyan of Shemini. Now we're just saying general נקודה ווערטער, but we don't know why, how, what, when.
When we talk about the number eight, we find two extremes. The eighth shows that it's something separate, completely separate from the previous seven. כדאיתא Kli Yakar Kli Yakar says אז אלע ענינים פון דער בריאה זענען אין דעם מספר ז', all things of the creation is seven, והמספר שמיני איז מיוחד לאל יתברך, and the number eight is specifically connected to the אויבערשטער who is the Creator. Seven is the creation, including the highest level of creation because the seven includes Shabbos, and Shabbos is a holy day, but nevertheless, it's still part of the creation. While eight is completely separated. He says peshat in the Kli Yakar. See, if the words are Kli Yakar you might think that seven represents the creation and eight is higher than creation. He says no, when we say seven represents the creation, it includes the אור אלקי which is in the creation. Creation and the Godliness that's there. That includes also Elokut which is there in the בריאה. It's higher than Using the terms of Chasidut, it's So שביעי A seven goes In the seven גופא there are two דרגות, there's the sixth and the seven, and then you have eight. So six is וועלט which is in וועלט גופא a lower מדרגה, seven is וועלט a higher מדרגה. Yeah. Yeah, but it's מתלבש in וועלט which is more בהעלם, on the seventh it's מתלבש in וועלט which is more begiluy. But it's still Elokus which is mislabesh in olamot. While eight is higher than that. So on one hand eight shows completely beyond bri'ah, beyond hishtalshelut. Aber מאידך גיסא on the other hand, ווייזט דער טייטש פון דעם ווארט שמיני גופא, אכטער, when we say the word eight, that means it's the eighth. It comes right after seven. If it would have no connection to the seven, you wouldn't call it eight. Like in days of the week, you have seven days of the week, Sunday is not called the eighth. It's number one again. That has nothing to do with it before. And this is like it, because they're separate It's a separate week and then it's the end, like no more, and starts over again. Don't call it eight. Here the fact that we call it eight a siman that it's connected to the previous. So on one hand it's higher than the seven, on the other hand it's connected to the seven. און דאס איז דער אויפטו פון דעם ענין פון שמיני, and this is davka the whole thing of Shemini of eight. The greatness this the completion, the shleimut of giluy Elokus is davka this, which means the tachlit hakavanah is אז אויך דער אור וואס איז העכער פון השתלשלות, and even the light which is higher than hishtalshelut, which is hinted in eight, that's higher than השתלשלות, זאל נמשך ווערן בגילוי אין וועלט. That should come into the velt. און דאס איז מרומז אין ווארט שמיני, hinted in the eight, אז אויך דאס וואס איז מובדל און העכער פון דער בריאה, this that is higher than the בריאה, פון בחינת שבעה, כנ\"ל כלי יקר. The Keli Yakar says eight shows it's higher than the seven. So this represents the Elokus which is higher than velt, זאל זיין in an eighth, of Shemini, should be the eighth, וואס איז שייכות צו בחינת ז' די עניני הבריאה, eight shows it's connected to the bri'ah, and it's higher than that the inyanim which are higher than the bri'ah are nimshach in the bri'ah. That's the That's the tachlit. Okay, that's the ma'alah of Shemini. דאס איז אויך And this is what we're saying. Eight is both. Eight has the ma'alah it's higher, and on the other hand, it's connected. See sometimes in Chasidus we say different inyanim. If you remember what I spoke on on Acharon shel Pesach, the sichah says the opposite. Not the opposite, it's a different Here, that as great as Shemini is, it's still connected to velt. אחרון, that is the highest מדרגה. Okay, so there is could be like that, and it could be like this, etc. Here we're talking this way. Okay.
This is the reason, the pshat, why it says the harp of the time of Mashiach will have eight strings. In other words, the inyan of eight is connected to the time of Mashiach. Why? דער חידוש וואס וועט זיין תקופתם דע ימות המשיח, the chiddush of the time of Mashiach is like this: ונגלה כבוד הוי' וראו כל בשר. The כבוד of Hashem will be revealed and all the בשר, the flesh, will see Hashem, which means אז טראץ דעם וואס כבוד הוי' איז באין ערוך העכער פֿון דער בריאה, even though כבוד הוי' is definitely much higher באין ערוך to the בריאה, וועט ער דאן זיין בגלוי אין אן אופן פֿון וראו כל בשר. That גילוי אלקות which is higher than the בריאה will be revealed in the בשר, אין א ראיה מוחשית פֿון בשר הגשמי, that the physical בשר will be able to see it, ביז אז דער גילוי פֿון כבוד הוי' וועט זיין נישט בדרך חידוש, בדרך פשיטות אין עולם הגשמי. This is the main nekudah of the שיחה here. And this this word that we this line is נוגע to know, because if you skip this line, you won't get the שיחה further, that the pshat is that the גילוי אלקות that comes there will be nisht will come into the velt, the velt will recognize it. And then he adds another words here: the velt will recognize it בדרך פשיטות. That means it'll be in the velt simple, not בדרך חידוש. Not to say, oh, there's something in the velt. And he explains, dos heist, this is the whole point, אז דאס וואס דער בשר הגשמי וועט זעהן כבוד הוי', this that the בשר הגשמי will see the כבוד of Hashem, the אלקות, וועט עס זיין מצד די תכונות און טבע פֿון זיין דעמאלסדיקע גשמיותדיקע מציאות. It'll become the nature of the גשמיות of that time. Then we could say that the velt takes We can say like this: the בשר הגשמי is gashmi, and gashmi is an helem on Elokut, but Elokut is so strong it could come and overpower the gashmiyut and make the gashmiyut see it. דאס נעמט זיך אבער נישט מצד די תכונה פֿון א בשר גופא, then it's not that the nature of the velt, of the basar, is to see Elokut. It's on the contrary. Then it remains that the בשר בעצם is an helem on Elokut, and the Oibershter could make it and it should overpower. דעמאלט איז דער גילוי אלקות אין וועלט, אפילו ווען דאס קומט אין ראיה מוחשית, if that would be the case, then even though you see Elokut, velt sees אלקות, אין אן אופן פֿון חידוש, then it's a chidush. It's something on top of the world, in addition. The world itself doesn't have it. The Oibershter makes it, it should come there. וויבאלד אז דאס וואס דער בשר זעהט כבוד הוי' איז נישט מצד זיין טבע, if it's not because it's it's nature, then it's something in addition to velt, overpowering the velt. It'll be because that will be the nature of the velt. אין דעם זעלבן אופן ווי עיני בשר זעהען דברים גשמיים, just like now the nature of the world that when you look you see a physical thing, וואס דאס איז מצד די תכונה, די טבע און תכונה פֿון די עיני בשר גופא, that's the nature then the nature will be to see Elokut. So, that means that the nature of velt will see Elokut, which is That's the real combination of both. It's the physical... The physicality, but the physicality will be godly. Will be godly, exactly. But it will come from the teva of the velt to see the gashmi the Elokus. That's why we say that there's a connection between Mashiach's time and שמונה. דאס ונגלה כבוד הוי' וראו כל בשר וואס ס'קומט אין ימות המשיח, this that there will be the revelation of Hashem in the וועלט, דריקט אויס די צוויי קצוות וואס מיר האבן אין שמיני. That is is the inyan of the two extremes which we have in Shemini. When we say כבוד הוי', it means Elokus which is higher than וועלט. וועלט is included in ז', seven. This is higher than seven. It will be niglah that the teva of the world, which is ז', will see Elokus. The eight will be together with the seven. So, that's the whole inyan of this Shemini, and that's why there is a connection that's the connection between eight and Mashiach. Fine. So, we're saying that seven is connect it's connected to eight. We're saying that Not only seven is connected to eight, eight is connected to seven. All right, it's the second. And then what will happen what will happen when Mashiach will come, the seven will be connected to eight also. The seven will see the eight. The nature of seven will be not seven anymore, it will be eight. The nature of וועלט, which is helem on Elokus, will become that it'll see Elokus. And that's the nature of the וועלט. And that's going to be a problem. That is not the nature of the וועלט. How could you say that it's nature of the וועלט? That will become the nature. We're going to see, but how it becomes, so that's going against the וועלט. If it becomes, it means you're going to change the nature. That's not the pshat. Then it's not pshat that וועלט בעצם, מצד עצמה it doesn't. אייבערשטער made it, like we said before, ער מאכט א חידוש hier. וועלט, the וועלט will not be what it was. וועלט will become וועלט will become different. That's not what we're trying to say, we're trying that a pshat is means וועלט will not become different. This is what וועלט is. What do you mean this is what velt is? דאס וואס די וועלט איז איצט אין אן אופן וואס אין איר זעט זיך נישט קיין אלקות, this, that the world is now in such a way that you do not see אלקות, אפילו נישט די דרגא אין אלקות וואס איז בערך הבריאה, don't even see Elokus which is בערך to the בריאה, איז עס דאך נישט קיין צוגעגעבענע זאך צו די מציאות פון דער וועלט. It's not something in addition to the מציאות of the velt. This is how the world was created. This is the מציאות of velt, the teva of velt. היינט, וויבאלד אז דער העלם והסתר וואס אין וועלט איז מצד איר עצם מציאות, the fact the fact that the velt is a העלם והסתר, that is her מציאות as the way the Eibershter made it, וואס מחמת דעם ווערט זי אנגערופן מיט'ן נאמען עולם, that's why it's called עולם, וואס דער נאמען פון יעדער זאך בריינגט ארויס זיין תוכן, עיקר, like we said before, the name of something brings out what the תוכן is, וואס איז מלשון העלם, why? Because velt is העלם, the מציאות of velt, the teva is העלם. טא ווי שייך אז וראו כל בשר, וואס איז וואס ער זאגט מ'איז אין ענין הבשר גופא, so how do we say that the teva of velt will see Elokus? It's the opposite of the בשר, of the עולם. So, you can say that Elokus will overpower it, fine, but to say that this is the מציאות of velt and this is its teva, it's not true. So, the answer is,
זאגט דער אלטער רבי, so the Alter Rebbe in Tanya says this is a peshat, a peshat in Tanya which is always when you learn this perek, you always wonder in these words. The Alter Rebbe says like this: he speaks about Mashiach, then he says that the גילוי אור אין סוף ברוך הוא בעולם הזה הגשמי וואס דאס וועט זיין בימות המשיח ובתחיית המתים, this גילוי אלקי that will be in this world, Mashiach will come, תחיית המתים, he says it's talui, it's the famous perek, פרק ל\"ז, the beginning, is תלוי במעשינו ועבודתנו כל משך זמן, כל זמן משך הגלות. Depends on our avodah in the time of galut, which is a very, פלאיקע פלא. Why galut? No, why galut? It's throughout all 6,000 years! From when the Eibershter created the world, certainly when the Eibershter gave us the Torah, we have this job of bringing down אלקות. Why is it dependent on galut? So, you can ask לכאורה, וואס איז דער דיוק כל משך זמן משך הגלות דוקא? Why does he say the whole time of galut? דאס וואס דורך מעשינו ועבודתנו טוט מען פועל'ן דעם גילוי אור אין סוף ברוך הוא בעולם הזה הגשמי, this that through our avodah we cause גילוי אלקות, גילוי אור אין סוף in עולם הזה, איז דאס מצד די מעלה פון מצות, right? Because of the mitzvot. ער זאגט דארט גופא, he says there in Tanya, he says: עשיית המצוה ממשיך אדם גילוי אור אין סוף מלעילא לתתא, when you do a mitzvah you bring אלקות from up to down, ויתלבש בגשמיות דעולם הזה, it'll mitlabesh, and Mashiach will come and this will be nigleh. If it's וואס איז עס פארבונדן דוקא מיט'ן זמן משך הגלות? Why because of galut? Galut is only 2,000 years, or whatever it is. Time with the Alter Rebbe, it was only 1,800 years, 1,700 years, and and and Torah was given much before. So, why is it in galut? Somebody would say it was always, I mean, Mashiach was not here before at any at any time. Galut is not galut. Well, what, it's it's not it's not called galut, because before was בית המקדש. You understand? No, no, still, it was still azoy vi you're talking, no, galut is galut. No, that's not, we don't call it galut. Once Mashiach is not here, we don't call it galut. Before Mashiach, all the time did somebody call galut? We never call it. Is there an issue with galut? No, it's not galut, what's not galut? Galut means תקופת הגלות, time of galut. איינע פון די ביאורים בדרך אפשר בזה, one of the ביאורים that you might say the Rebbe says is like this: You can feel it, right? It's a deep inyan here. בדרך אפשר, it's a chiddush? Yeah, yeah, the Rebbe's chiddush. But like the Rebbe said, the previous, previous Rebbe said the Rebbe tells the story, you know, in the maamar, from the חתן'ס מאמר, that the Frierdiker Rebbe heard a maamar from his father, and then he came to to his shver, and his shver asked him to chazar the maamar, so he chazered the maamar. So, when he came back, his father asked him about it, so he told him, 'I chazered the maamar.' 'What did you say? What did they hear?' So, he told him, 'I said this and this, this the kashya, this is the terutz.' So, his father said, 'When I said this in the maamar, I said בדרך אפשר.' He used the word, efshar, so why didn't you say it? So, he says, 'שטאקע, וואס ביי דיר איז בדרך אפשר, ביי מיר איז בדרך ודאי.' But for you, but by you is בדרך אפשר, means vadai, so. Ah? Chutzpah! Chutzpah? Why is it chutzpah? It's true! Even Beis Hamikdash wasn't perfect times, it's all avodah. It's not galut! It's not Mashiach's time, but it's not Galut. בכדי אז דער גילוי אין ימות המשיח ובתחיית המתים זאל זיין מצד טבע העולם גופא, and we say the whole time before that when we say the גילוי of אלקות at תחיית המתים, משיח, will be מצד the טבע of the וועלט itself, not as an addition to the וועלט, he says: דוקא ווען די המשכה של אלקות על ידי המצות וואס די המשכה קומט לידי גילוי לעתיד לבוא איז נישט ווי א צוגעגעבענע זאך אין וועלט. That could only be is if the mitzvot, we said what brings this גילוי אלקות? The mitzvot. But that's if you want אלקות should be part of וועלט It's only when you do the mitzvot, that the mitzvot is not an addition to וועלט. The mitzvot are the ones that bring it, the mitzvot should be not... דאס הייסט, the מצוות טוען אויף נאר אז אין וועלט זאל צוקומען אן ענין אלוקי, אבער די וועלט פארבלייבט ווי זי איז געווען פריער, וואס דאס איז עולם לשון העלם. You could do like this: you could do the mitzvah as an addition to וועלט. There is וועלט, וועלט is העלם on אלוקות, mitzvot are גילוי אלוקות. So you do mitzvot, which is not וועלט, I mean you're using objects of the וועלט, but it's not וועלט, and you're bringing אלוקות in וועלט from the outside. So if you do that, then when the וועלט will feel this אלוקות, it'll feel it like an outside force. The וועלט itself דאקא doesn't have it, and you're ממשיך it, because the mitzvot you did came from an outside force, and you're ממשיך it. That's not how Then it won't work, then it won't accomplish that the טבע itself is מרגיש, feels אלוקות. נאר די המשכה דורך די מצוות זאל זיין אזא ענין וואס מאכט איבער די גשמיות עולם הזה. The mitzvah has to be that it changes the גשמיות, that the gashmiyut itself, not that it comes from the outside and has hashpaah on the gashmiyut, but it makes and has an effect on the gashmiyut itself, and he's going to explain what it means. און דערפאר איז דער גילוי דימות המשיח תלוי במעשינו ועבודתנו כל זמן משך הגלות. And that's why it depends on galut. ווייל דער ענין וואס איז דא אין מצוות, this idea in מצוות, צו איבערמאכן דעם עולם גופא, that the world itself's teva becomes that way, איז עס בעיקר דורך די מצוות וואס מען מקיים איז בזמן הגלות, mainly through mitzvot in galut. Now we don't know why yet, and yet you might be thinking so far it sounds like what you said, is it going to change? No, I have another question. Didn't we learn didn't we learn that on שבועות, מתן תורה עליונים ירדו לתחתונים ותחתונים יעלו לעליונים, so there was like an integration? So I guess what the sichah is going to say, there's a start It doesn't say that, but that's the peshat, it was a beginning. That gave the koach, but the real thing happens through זמן הגלות and it finishes off in the time of Mashiach. So מתן תורה didn't Yes, and then through the velt, yeah, but it doesn't change the טבע עולם, it brings Elokus into velt. But to show that it comes this is the nature of the velt, that's something else. In זמן הגלות it's the nature of the velt, and we'll see why we'll see. So far it it's not clear yet. And he explains why. Let's go. דער טעם וואס מעשה המצוות בכללות טוען אויף אזא המשכה וואס מאכט איבער דעם מציאות פון דער וועלט, why is it bichlal that when you do a mitzvah you have an effect on the velt? Why? Because דער תכלית הבריאה פון וועלט איז בשביל התורה ובשביל ישראל. Lechatchilah when the world was created, it was for on the tachlit of Torah and יידן, אז יידן דורך תורה ומצוות עוסק זיין און אויפטאן גילוי אלוקות אין וועלט, that Yidden through Torah and mitzvot should bring Elokus in velt. קומט אויס אז דער גילוי אלוקות וואס ווערט נמשך אין וועלט דורך ישראל און תורה, so it comes out that גילוי אלוקות that's נמשך in the world through Yidden and תורה, איז נישט קיין ענין וואס קומט אלס נוסף צו איר מציאות. So lechatchilah when you do a mitzvah, it's not the peshat that you're bringing something from outside of the world into the world. No. This this is even though before we thought that the וועלט be'etzem, the טבע וועלט, is העלם on אלוקות. So he says, no, be'etzem, the real עצם of וועלט is Torah u'mitzvot. און וויבאלד אז דאס, דער גילוי אלוקות על ידי ישראל ותורה, איז די כוונה און תכלית פון דער וועלט גופא, since this inyan that יידן should bring אלוקות in וועלט through Torah u'mitzvot is the goal why the world was created, הייסט עס דאך אז דער עולם גופא, the פנימיות of the world itself, the פנימיות of the וועלט מאנט. מאנט is demands. אז עס זאל דורכפירן זיין תכלית, that the world wants its תכלית, that גילוי אלוקות is in them דורך תורה ומצוות, needs the וועלט. The teva of the וועלט expects and claims and demands that there should be גילוי אלוקות. So it's not something against it, not like you would think the וועלט doesn't want אלוקות, the Eibershter brings אלוקות, so you do a mitzvah, you bring אלוקות. Be'etzem the וועלט alone doesn't. So בדרך, like they say by yetzer hara, just to put it into words, the yetzer hara trying to convince you to do עבירות, בעצם the yetzer hara wants you shouldn't listen to him. It's even better for him, but he has to do his job. The וועלט has to do its job. The job is to be העלם on אלוקות. But בעצם, וואס וויל די וועלט? You should bring תורה ומצוות. דאס אליין איז אבער נישט מספיק. So lichorah it comes out that it already simply answers explains what we said answered what we said before. The question before was how do you say that וועלט will become, and that itself the teva of velt will be to recognize Elokus? The teva of velt is helem on Elokus. So now we have an answer to it. It's not so. The teva really of velt is not a helem on Elokus, the teva of velt is Torah u'mitzvot. So we still don't have Yidden and Torah go together, so we don't have still a ביאור why דווקא גלות, so בכלל when you do mitzvot. Says, דאס אליין איז אבער נישט מספיק. This is not enough. ווייל וויבאלד דער גדר פון עולם איז מלשון העלם, because after all, the velt, the טייטש of olam is העלם, אז מצד הבריאה There is fact in the פנימיות, הכוונה of velt, but as far as the creation is concerned, איז איר עצם מציאות אזא וואס זי איז, נישט ניכר אין איר דער תכלית וואס דארף דורכגעפירט ווערן. The way the Eibershter made the velt, the velt doesn't feel that you want that we have to be haPnimiyut, haPnimiyut is that, but not really what it feels. נאר אדרבה, מצד בריאתו איז דא אן העלם. The creation itself is helem. קומט דאך אויס אז נוגע צו דער מציאות און ענין פון עולם גופא, די מציאות of what velt is, איז די המשכה, איז די המשכה פון אלקות שהיא על ידי המצוות ווי א צוגעגעבענע זאך. מצד די פנימיות הכוונה it's takeh not an extra thing, it's velt itself. But the way it is מצד looking at the בריאה, when you do a mitzvah and you bring Elokus, you're bringing something from the outside to the velt, which is not Elokus. So the שאלה is, so how, we go back to the question, so how is it that we really לעתיד לבוא it's going to be that the טבע וועלט will become, when the טבע וועלט is not like that after all? און אויף די שאלה וועט פארענטפערט ווערן בזה וואס מען זאגט אז דאס וואס די גילוי לעתיד לבוא טוט זיך קומען דורך מעשינו ועבודתינו איז עס בעיקר כל זמן משך הגלות כמבואר לקמן. The answer will be: When do we see that the עצם מציאות of טבע of וועלט is אלקות? That's when the mitzvah is done in גלות, כמבואר לקמן, like we're going to explain. What does it say פשוט'דיג?
Time of גלות, the כח המסירת נפש shines more than the time of the בית המקדש, ווייל דוקא דער העלם והסתר פון זמן הגלות רופט ארויס דעם גילוי פון כח המסירת נפש. What brings the כח המסירת נפש? The העלם והסתר of גלות. ביי א איד, there's a, a איד has a feeling of mesirat nefesh for the אויבערשטער because of the העלם והסתר. In his heart, in his, it's more apparent, he's able to do it. He's forced into the situation. But here's a question: Sounds like a question, it's almost like an introduction, not a קשיא because the תירוץ is obvious, but: ווי קומט עס אז העלם זאל ארויסרופן גילוי פון מסירת נפש? Mesirat nefesh is גילוי אלקות, right? You have this גילוי of connection to the אויבערשטער, you feel the אויבערשטער more. What brings you the feeling of the אויבערשטער more? העלם on אלקות! הגם אז ס'איז לכאורה א דבר טבעי, okay, it's a natural thing. A person could control his foot more than, in other words, it's easier to put, if you want to, your foot, your, your heel, your sole, into hot water than your head, because there there is less gilui of the nefesh, because the least of the nefesh is in the bottom of the foot. Actually in Avot DeRabbi Natan he calls the עקב שברגל the מלאך המות שבאדם. Whatever there is in the world there is in every person, in a miniature way. And it goes through different things: In the world he says there is a מלאך המות. Where do you have a מלאך המות in a person? The akev, because there's really, where the least, mavet is death, the least chayut is in the bottom of the foot. Because there is the least chayut there, so then you, there's the mesirat nefesh, it will do things which is against itself. So, so the answer, the kashya was: How could he'elem vehester on Elokut in galut bring out The way our mashal showed it, that's the nature of how the Oibershter made it! But דארף מען דאס גופא פארשטיין, you have to understand this itself. Why did the Oibershter make that he'elem should bring gilui? Takeh we find that's that way, like that's the nature, because there's he'elem, like I gave you before, if they press you, that brings out that you want to go stronger. But why that's the nature, why is it like that? איז די הסברה אין דעם, the explanation is like this: כדי עס זאל זיך דורכפירן די כוונה הבריאה פון דירה לו יתברך בתחתונים, in order that the kavanah of the creation to make a dirah for the Oibershter should come, should be fulfilled, אז די וועלט גופא זאל ווערן א דירה פאר דעם אויבערשטן אויך מצד איר טבע, the Oibershter wants that the bottom line should be that even the teva of velt becomes a, one that recognizes אלקות, האט דער אויבערשטער באשאפן די וועלט אין אזא אופן, so the Oibershter created the world in such a way, אז אין איר זאל זיך אפשפיגלען איר כוונה און תכלית, that in the velt there should be a reflection of what the kavanah is. So not like we said before that there is סוף כל סוף the kavanah of the beriah is because of Torah umitzvot, but that's the פנימיות שבפנימיות. The אויבערשטער wanted that the, the גילוי'דיקע טבע of velt, not the פנימיות'דיקע כוונה, the גילוי'דיקע טבע of velt should resemble, should reflect this nekudah that its inyan is Elokus. So that you should have a higher giluy, יתרון האור מן החושך, that the choshech that comes from, the or that comes from choshech is greater, דערפאר איז די וועלט איינגעשטעלט געווארן באופן כזה אז דוקא דער העלם זאל ארויסרופן א כלי צו א העכערן אור. So that's why the אויבערשטער made it that the helem should bring a higher or. Because the kavana of the helem is for or, so the אייבערשטער made it bafoal like that, not only the תכלית הכוונה is, bafoal, look, helem brings giluy. That means that the helem of Elokus is the one that brings out the giluy Elokus of mesirat nefesh. ובאופן כזה אז גופא וויזט יעדער עולם מלשון העלם, and since the world while it's olam, while it's העלם, איידער עס ווערט נתגלה די כוונה דאס ענין, before the kavana gets נתגלה, שפיגלט זיך אפ די כוונה פון העלם גופא, פון העלם עולם גופא איז בכדי עס זאל אמשכ'ן ווערן תורה ומצוות יסוד וכולי, the teva of the world is that through the helem you get to the giluy. That's what the אייבערשטער made. This is how we bring out that when you do a mitzvah, you are bringing Elokus into the welt, not only you are overpowering the welt, you're bringing that the welt itself is Elokus. Because not only the kavana of it is Elokus, the Aibershter made it that the teva of the world, b'poal, the teva of the olam, which is helem, is Elokus, is to bring out gilui of of mesirat nefesh. און דאס איז די הסברה פון דעם וואס מען זאגט, and this is the explanation, we say that גילוי דלעתיד is תלוי במעשינו ועבודתנו כל זמן משך הגלות. This is why we say, when will the real Elokus be nitgaleh at what level, through the Because of the mesirat nefesh of the Because when you have the mesirat nefesh in galut, the mesirat nefesh is gilui Elokus. What makes the the gilui Elokus of mesirat nefesh? The teva of helem. That means that the teva of helem itself is what brings Elokus. Oh, so then it's the teva of the world. So the whole kashya we had in the beginning, how could you say that the teva of דער פשוט is will become that it will recognize Elokus when the teva of the world is helem? So now he says, no, the teva of the world is helem, but the teva of the world itself is that the helem should be the gilui of Elokus. ממילא לעתיד it will be, און דאס איז די סיבה, The thought of it though, if we really know that now, I mean, you live with Moshiach, and it's Yeah, definitely. און דאס איז די סיבה מיט די השפעה המשכה פון אלקות על ידי המצוות בזמן הגלות, that's why davka the mitzvot that we do, the Elokus that Elokus that comes through mitzvot of גלות, איז פעולת ישועות, עס טוט זיך מער מתלבש אין די מציאות פון די גשמיות פון עולם הזה גופא. The mitzvot of גלות is the one that gets into the gashmiyut itself more, ווי דאס קומט ארויס לעתיד לבוא בגילוי, till it will also be בגילוי, אז די נגלה פון כבוד ה' וראו כל בשר, עס וועט זיין מצד תכונות הטבע הבשר גופא. And the fact that the world the בשר of the world will recognize Elokus comes because of the teva of the world גופא, because סוף כל סוף, this is the teva of the world. So now we understand the peshat in Tanya, why davka it's גלות, and what's that got to do with Shemini. We said before that this is the inyan of Shemini. Shemini is higher than the world, Elokus, the eighth, higher than ז', but in the world. And in which way in the world? Not in the world that the world, not that the teva of the world is the opposite, but it overpowers it and comes in. This becomes teva of the world itself. That's the real meaning of Shemini.
We said before that there is a less, smaller connection between the beginning of Shemini to the end of Tzav, even though it seems much closer, but it's a smaller connection than Shemini to זאת החיה, these are the kosher animals, these are the טרפה animals, and explains like this. In the שבעת ימי המילואים, which is written at the end of Parshat Tzav, the seven days of the מילואים, at the end of פרשת צו, האבן אהרן ובניו אבגעטאן אלץ וואס איז שייך לסוף טוב על ידי עבודה שלמטה. They did everything what they could do. This was all before there was Shechinah came down למעלה. This was they had to do, so they did everything they could. It's not that they did something that didn't have anything to do with Elokus. It was mamshich Elokus. But at a level of Elokus which is שייך to the world, which world could be mamshich. ארויס פון דער עבודה could bring it. We said before that אלקות which שייך to עולם is all part of ז'. Even though we say ז' is the creation, but it doesn't mean just the creation. The אלקות of the creation is also part of ז'. So, the first seven, that's what they did. אבער דאס אלץ איז געווען אהכנה והקדמה, so only a preparation and an introduction, צום כבוד ה', צום השראת השכינה במקדש ביום השמיני המלואים, to the גילוי of אלקות that came on the eighth day. אז דער ז' אין די היפך פון שמיני, the eighth day was a higher level, שמיני. What does it mean? אז בחינת אלקות וואס איז מובדל לגמרי מן הבריאה, on the eighth day, what happened that the אלקות which is completely separated in the creation. ווערט פארבונדן אויך מיט עניני הבריאה שלמעלה משבעה, also in the בריאה which is שבעה. That's why it's called eight. Did they know this, Moses and the people? Yeah, of course. They knew it, what they were doing. Ah, no. Moshe, I don't know if all the Jews knew it, but Moshe and Aaron Yeah, yeah, yeah. He knew this. Nu, for sure they knew. So was it also the people might know Well, they see it, so you know, they know it was going to happen, but when it happens, We know, knowing is nothing. So now we know what's the דרגה of שמיני. And the connection to the end of Parshas Tzav is a very like weak connection. It comes right after that. But they're two separate levels. Till the end of Parshas Tzav is all ז, very great מדרגה, the highest level, אלקות which is in טבע, higher. And שמיני is a new מדרגה, it's a new סדר. On the other hand, the פרשה of זאת החיה, which is non-kosher animals, kosher animals, in the פרשה of זאת החיה וסרצי וחיות בהמות טמאות וכולו, here it talks about the non-kosher animals. And their איסור אכילתם וטומאתם, which I know that you can't eat them and they make you טמא. That is פרשת שמיני. That has to do with שמיני. Why? Like we said now, before we even go further, we understand, because we said before, the greater the העלם, the more it shows that אלקות is part of עולם. Sounds like if the Rabbi's biur, very, but it's such a טיפע ענין, I mean or it's trying to bring out that the helem of Elokus is really the the gilui of Elokus. I mean, it's it's a Chassidus and you read it, and never fall in to any other Okay, that's something else. That's for you, that's a whole, we are here. Sure, as that we seek it. I mean, it's one of the things we see. We see there with גדולת השם, we see the אייבערשטער made the mountains, and the אייבערשטער made the מה רבו מעשיך. That's a different, but it's all gilui Elokus in olam. How the olam, here he wants to show again that the helem of Elokus, you're saying gilui, we're saying the helem of Elokus, chaya which is treif, the reason it's treif is because it's a setirah to Elokus, and the tachlit of that like you said, like galut brings in with gilui Elokus. This also says, the זיכוך פון עולם לשון העלם but what Hashem doesn't want That's what טיס א ביאור. in this דער זיכוך פון עולם לשון העלם, וואס דורכדעם ווערט אויסגעבראכט בשלימות אזיין כוונה איז גילוי אלקות, what we said before, that when you purify the olam, you bring out what its kavanah is, it's for gilui Elokus, das heyst בחינת ערב איז מובדל אינגאנצן מן הבריאה, that when you purify the olam, so you the olam itself becomes a keli and part of Elokus, which is higher than olam. How is the birur? The more that there is helem, there is And what do you do? Just like we said before, there is a galut and nevertheless, because galut there brings it to to gilui to to to mesirat nefesh. Here also, you have there a טריפה חיה, so what does a טריפה חיה do? You know that there is a difference, and the purpose, why is there חיות טמאות? So you should stay away from them, and recognize what is right and what is wrong. The דוגמה's ma'amar Chazal, Chazal say, אל יאמר אדם אי אפשי בבשר חזיר, a person should not say, \"I don't want חזיר. I don't like חזיר.\" Don't say that. \"אלא אפשי, I want it, ומה אעשה, אבי שבשמים גזר עלי.\" What should I do, the Eibershter told me not to do this? The vort is, the whole purpose is the חזיר brings out the כח, the fact that there is a טריפה thing brings out the כח of a Yid connected with the Eibershter. If a Yid doesn't if חזיר is not a העלם והסתר, a Yid doesn't like חזיר, it's not a העלם הסתר of אלקות. He likes it, oh, he likes something that's bad. That means it's העלם. And he overcomes it. And the תכלית, why is there חזיר that he should like? So he should overcome it. That brings גילוי אלקות. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't want it, but he eats it anyway. Yeah, that's it. It's not גילוי אלקות. Later he brings, ah? That's the maggid said. The Mezeritcher Maggid says a בעל תשובה shouldn't say that. For a different reason, he says. Because since he tasted it once, and he, fact, liked it. So if you keep on saying, \"I liked it, I like it, I like it\", you might start going back to it. That's it's not בעצם. בעצם every person should say this, but since it's a chashash, that's what the maggid says. In Midrash doesn't say that. Midrash it just says that person shouldn't say this, he says a בעל תשובה should be careful. When you have חיה ובהמה טמאה, and you do not eat it, and you have להבדיל בין החיה הנטמאה to the כשר'ה. That is מברר even the העלם. The מדרש זאגט אויף דעם פסוק זאת הבהמה on this pasuk, the Midrash says, \"לא ניתנו המצות לישראל אלא לצרף בהן את הבריות.\" The mitzvot were given given to Yidden to purify them. צירוף da meint זיכוך. So it means that when you have on this pasuk it says, when you have טריפה, why are there טריפה animals? So we should be able to purify and know what's right and what what's good and what's bad. And the fact that there is bad, makes us recognize what is good, and makes us higher. So the bad, the העלם brings us higher. So now we explained that in the העלם, the תכלית of the העלם, תכלית of the חזיר, the תכלית of the טרייף is for גילוי אלוקות. So in that we have a reflection of a גילוי אלוקות. No, now also, it's just we don't see it. So according to this Gemara, Midrash, when a Yid doesn't eat חזיר, he likes it, he says, \"I like it, I don't eat.\" So what's he doing here? He's the חזיר is megaleh that he listens to the Eibershter's רצון. If he says, \"I like it, I don't like it,\" then it doesn't show he's listening to the Eibershter's רצון, it's not גילוי of the רצון עצמי. But if he says, \"I like it and I don't do it,\" so the fact that there is something bad that I like is in order to be megaleh in me that I could stick to the רצון of the Eibershter. So the whole כוונה, the whole העלם is really the נקודה is for the גילוי. So we should really try to like these things that we shouldn't have? Even more? Yeah, yeah. How else do you do that? That's all the point. It doesn't say more, it says you like, you have to say, \"I like it.\" But like I said, a baal teshuvah shouldn't say it. A baal teshuvah shouldn't say it, and I think we all are in the same level. We're not really baalei teshuvah, I'm saying in a negative way, but this problem we have. Nobody wants to eat ham. Not ham, but a good טרייפע שטיקל, or, you know, something to see, so, you know. Maybe a cheeseburger. Cheeseburger. I also don't have any any חשק for a cheeseburger. He says over there efshar. It doesn't mean that after, it says that potentially if I could have it, I might like it. No, no, efshar, I want it. אי אפשר means I don't want it. No, that's why it chooses efshar, I want it. Yeah, efshar, efshi. Afshi means I want it, yeah, you have to say, \"I want it.\" I don't know, it's like a person could say, \"I want חזיר\"? It's disgusting. It's not even בשר בחלב, all these things, or חמץ on Pesach. Does somebody like חמץ on Pesach? It's disgusting. A person would vomit. It's genetically modified, so we wouldn't, you wouldn't like it all year all year round. What? Like it? Well, it depends if it's natural or not. Exactly. You see the whole day talking about kosher food on Pesach. How many carbs, moisture, raw on Pesach. Yeah, yeah. Gluten gluten is very bad. Why do they make אסור קטניות? 'Cause it looks like חמץ, you see? So it makes a difference. Do people like to eat קטניות? That's the question. I don't know. What do I care? Only that when they told the רבי on on a piece on the potato that it's kneidl, and later they told him that it wasn't true, he didn't eat it. And now I'm saying my own p'shat, I always say this: I think the moment they said it's a kneidl, it became disgusting, and now to go eat it, Poy. If I would hear that it's potato, I would eat it. Save what is there. That's a proof they don't even want you to have a ta'avah for חמץ on Pesach, because you can't even eat קטניות that looks like. No. Okay. We have a ta'avah and we say now, but the potato don't eat it. Who says that? But it's good it's good, yes. It's not it's not חמץ. Yeah, but since it resembles חמץ, I like it. There are so many things that look more like חמץ than קטניות. Potatoes, you can make anything. Well, that's when they well, they didn't have potatoes then. That's why the Chayei Adam wants to le'esor potatoes, starch potatoes as קטניות. So they told him, \"You're gonna be machmir in הלכות פסח, חמץ, and you're gonna be mekel on Chayei Adam.\" 'Cause that's the main thing that we have to eat. Okay, so when we have this, Like having the after the he'elem and the he'elem being a giluy, that's the giluy of שמיני, אז די גילוי אלוקות וואס איז העכער אין גאנצן פון וועלט, פֿאַר וועלט, גילוי אלוקות completely divine of the world, איז נתגלה אין שבע! In the seven. How do you see it's in the seven? It's called eight. Eight means it has to do with the seven. Shmini shows there is seven plus the one that's higher, and in the שבע, in the world, is taken over by it. Midrash says another thing that day. When he showed him the חיות טמאות, it really meant also, not only, meant משה ראה ארבע מלכיות בעיסוקן. Moshe saw all the kingdoms, means all the גלות'ן. When he said this is a טריפה חיה, he said this is this is Amalek, this is this is Edom. In their involvement, when they're active, in their activity. He explains the פרטיות of each גלות, how it is. So now it fits, because \"זאת החיה\" want to do טוב, און גילוי פון \"זאת החיה\" that there is חיות not kasher, and להבדיל, and we have to separate and not eat it, is that ענין וואס טוט זיך אויפן די גלות. The same thing as we said before, that גלות brings out of גלות is the biggest העלם, brings out the גילוי. So this \"זאת החיה\" brings out the same thing. When will it be? לעתיד לבא, when the כנור של שמונה נימין, משיח'ס כנור will be of eight נימין. Uh? That's techiyat hametim. און ער איז מסיים אין מדרש, he explains, ends in the Midrash, \"ואת החזיר\" when it gives through all the names, and it says, \"חזיר זה אדום. ולמה נקרא שמו חזיר?
Why is it called חזיר? שמחזרת עטרה לבעליה.\" It's going to bring back the crown to the owner, meaning הדא הוא דכתיב, like it says, ועלו מושיעים בהר ציון, that the helpers will come to הר ציון, לשפוט את הר עשו, so עשו is אדום, they're going to judge him, והיתה לה' המלוכה, and אידן are going to get Edom back. They're going to get Edom back means that there will be the גילוי אלקות, and אדום בעצם, which is the greatest he'elem, is be'emes the Elokus, and that'll be. It's a very That's how much of a pshat? Is that a Kabbalah or is that a pshat? One of the pshatim. It seems like he's going to be judged, subjugated. He's not reconciled. That's altogether different. No, they're going to be magaleh it. That's what He's going to be judged for the past, because of what he did, he's going to be judged, meaning it's going to have to be punished, נתברר. No, the deeper pshat is that it will be נתברר, it will be נתעלה to where it really is supposed to be. The pshat is he's going to be punished. You said it, I guess part is Acharon Shel Pesach. This is a combination of A few places, no. Says from where, no? Yeah. Now, from Shmini תשמ\"א, Shmini תשמ\"ו, and שבת פרשת אחרי, and the maamar of Acharon Shel Pesach תרס\"ו. So who put it Who put it How did you put it together? Oh, the same inyan in a few places, so you have one word from here, one from שם, so. Yeah. Big discussion on the radio today about Obama eating dog. Yeah. Just disgusting. Obama ate a dog? Should've said, \"It's disgusting.\" Yeah, he liked it. He liked it. Obama ate a dog? Tastes like chicken. Put enough sauce on it. Everything tastes like chicken. Yeah.
