פריערדיקער רבי told over this, the story: היות שהצמח צדק ילד, the צמח צדק was a child, ולמד הפסוק, את הפסוק, he learned the פסוק ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה, that יעקב lived in מצרים 17 years. תרגם לו מורהו, so his teacher interpreted it, explained it, על פי פירוש בעל הטורים, based on what the בעל הטורים says, ש י״ז שנותיו המובחרות חי יעקב במצרים. He says it in Yiddish: יעקב אבינו האט געלעבט די זיבעצן בעסטע יארן אין מצרים, that יעקב lived the best years of his life, the 17 best years of his life were lived in מצרים. This is what the צמח צדק learned as a child in חדר. כשבא הביתה מהחדר, when he came home from חדר, שאל את זקנו אדמו״ר הזקן, so he asked his grandfather the אלטער רבי: היתכן שיעקב אבינו בחיר האבות, how could it be that יעקב אבינו, the chosen one of the אבות, יהיו מבחר שנות חייו, so the best years of his life should be י״ז שנה שגר בארץ מצרים, should be the 17 years that he lived in מצרים, ערות הארץ, מצרים is known as ערות הארץ, which means a low, low place ברוחניות, so that's where he lived his best years, how is it possible? That's what he asked his grandfather. ויענה

אדמו״ר הזקן, so the אלטער רבי answered him. This is the לשון of the אלטער רבי: כתיב the פסוק says before ויגש, ואת יהודה שלח לפניו אל יוסף להורות לפניו גשנה. It says before יעקב came to מצרים he sent יהודה ahead להורות לפניו גשנה to to the word להורות in simple פשט means to make sure that in גושן, where we're going to move to גושן, to make sure things are okay there. But איתא במדרש, a מדרש it says, מובא ברש״י, רש״י brings it, this is all part of the לשון of the אלטער רבי, so it says like this: אמר רבי נחמיה, רבי נחמיה said, לתקן לו בית תלמוד, why did he send בנימין, יהודה first to גושן? To establish a place to learn תורה, שתהא שם תורה, there should be the תורה there, ושיהיו השבטים הוגים בתורה, and the שבטים should learn תורה. So he טייטשט the word להורות from לשון הוראה, teaching, that he sent him to make a place where you could teach תורה. Then he adds another ווארט, the אלטער רבי, it's all part of what he said to his grandson the צמח צדק: להורות לפניו גשנה, when it says the words here להורות לפניו, to teach, and he sent him ahead to teach in גושן. Now the word גושן is a name of a city, a name of a area, but גושן also has another meaning, from the word גש הלאה, come close, so he טייטשט להורות לפניו גשנה means, כשילמדו תורה, when you learn תורה, מתקרבים לקדוש ברוך הוא, you get close to the אייבערשטער, that's טייטש להורות לפניו גשנה, when you have להורות you have גשנה, ולכן היתה בחינת ויחי גם במצרים, so therefore even in מצרים, since he sent יהודה so they had תורה there and the שבטים learned תורה, that's why even in מצרים is געווען געלעבט, and he טייטשט it in Yiddish, he quotes the לשון Yiddish: אז

מען לערנט תורה ווערט מען נענטער צום אויבערשטן ברוך הוא, when you learn תורה you get closer to the אייבערשטער, און אויך אין מצרים איז געווען ויחי געלעבט, and in מצרים, even in מצרים was also געלעבט, it was real life in even if it's מצרים. This is the answer that the אלטער רבי gave to the צמח צדק. So before the רבי asks the questions, the רבי gives the introduction. He says like this: סיפורי רבותינו נשיאינו בכלל, the stories that our רביים told us, ואלו שנמסרו לנו על ידם על מנת לפרסמם בפרט, and especially those that they wanted should be spread out, should be publicized, מדוייקים הם כידוע בכל פרטיהם, as we know, are exact, every word, every פרט in the story is מדוייק. היינו, when we say every פרט means, הן בשייכות להבנת תוכן הסיפור, so in regard to understand what the story is all about, so every פרט is נוגע, שכל פרט נוגע, every פרט is important, ומסייע להבנת כל עניניו, and it helps understanding the whole thing, in other words if he says a פרט it's not just דרך אגב he said a פרט. A lot of things happened at the moment when this happened, maybe he walked over, maybe he stood... He always says over these פרטים which help you understand the story, והן בשייכות למוסר השכל שבסיפור, and also these פרטים are נוגע to the lesson that we take from the story, שבכל פרט טמונה הוראה בעבודת השם, in every פרט is hidden a lesson, not only in the whole story there's a lesson in עבודת השם, every פרט helps you in the lesson. So that's בכלל by all the stories, especially stories that they wanted to פרסם, וכן הוא גם בנידון דידן, so ממילא here also every פרט of this story is is מדוייק and a הוראה in עבודה, כולל גם שאלת הצמח צדק, including even the question that the צמח צדק asked, because some might think, ממילא the אלטער רבי answered, he was a רבי, צמח צדק at that time was a child when he asked the question, so the רבי says, כי אף ששאלו בילדותו, so even though he asked it as a child, בכל זה, still, מכיון שגם היא חלק מהסיפור שנמסר לנו על ידי רבותינו נשיאינו, but still, since it's part of the story that was told to us by the רביים, הרי בודאי ש גם בו תוכן רב, certainly even in the question there's a lot of meaning, וממילא גם הוראה בעבודת האדם, so even in the question there's a lesson of עבודה. ובפרט, so now he still now he said why, because the רביים said it over, even though it's the name of a child, but if the רביים said over the ווארט of the child, מסתמא there's a lot to it. ובפרט על פי מאמר חז"ל בוצין בוצין מקטפיה ידיע, especially חז"ל say that even little children you could see in them what they're gonna be when they grow up. So when you see later somebody grow up to be somebody like the צמח צדק, when he was a child already there was greatness in him. The literal translation of this מאמר חז"ל is בוצין בוצין מקטפיה ידיע means a certain אבטיח, certain vegetable, melons, when they start just start growing you already know if it'll be, you look at it and you say, oh, this is gonna be when it grows up, it's gonna grow out, it's gonna be a special one. Same thing by people, when they're small you could tell what's gonna be. So that usually they bring this מאמר חז"ל that when you see גדולי ישראל, so you could tell over stories what they said or things that they said when they were a child, because already they had גדלות. So here too even this the צמח צדק's question as a child also is מדויק and is a lesson in עבודה. ועוד נקודה בזה, another נקודה, ביאורו של אדמו"ר אדמו"ר הזקן נאמר להצמח צדק והוא עדיין בקטנותו, the אלטער רבי's answer was said to the צמח צדק when he was still a child. שזה מובן, from that we understand, שההוראה מהסיפור שייכת לכל אחד ואחד, that the lesson we take from this story is שייך to everybody, גם לאלו שהם עדיין בהדרגה של קטנות בעבודת השם. Even to קטנים. Now it doesn't say קטנים means little kids, but the word קטנות is in is in גרשיים, in quotation, meaning קטנות, even people on our low level are also able to take a lesson from this story. So this is just an introduction that everything is מדויק. Now the רבי is going to get to understand it, to look into the דיוקים and understand it. בהשקפה ראשונה ישנם כמה פרטים בלתי מובנים בתוכן והמשך הסיפור הנ"ל. If you look at first glance, there are certain פרטים, certain details which are not understood in the תוכן, the content of the story, and in the המשך of the story.

Number one. ביאורו של אדמו"ר הזקן אינו לכאורה תשובה מספקת לשאלתו של הצמח צדק. The answer of the אלטער רבי is not an answer and not enough answer, and not a satisfactory answer to the question that the צמח צדק asked. הרי שאלתו הייתה, his question was, איך יתכן, how could it be, שמבחר שני חייו של יעקב הם היו י"ז שנה שגר במצרים? How could we say that the best years of יעקב, of his life, was in מצרים? That's the question. ואילו מענהו של אדמו"ר הזקן הייתה, so what was the answer? The answer was, על ידי לימוד התורה אפשר להגיע גם במצרים לבחינת ויחי. That if you learn תורה, even in מצרים you could also live a proper life. ועדיין אינו מובן הסיבה לזה שויחי במצרים באופן של מבחר שני חייו. Doesn't answer why this was the best years. If he would ask, how is it possible in מצרים to live a proper life? The answer is you learn תורה, even in מצרים you can live a proper life. That wasn't the question. The question was, how could you say that his best life was in מצרים, in such a low place? And that the אלטער רבי didn't answer. Second question.

כיוון שהצמח צדק היה אז בגיל אשר רק ממלמדו שמע פירוש הבעל הטורים, the צמח צדק at that time was very young. The best ראיה is that how did he know the בעל הטורים? Not because he learned it, because his מלמד told him. Why didn't he learn it himself? Because he was still young. So this was a time when he was still young. When you're still young you don't learn בעל הטורים, don't learn other מפרשים. What do you learn when you're young? You learn רש"י. אז למה הביא אדמו"ר הזקן דרשת חז"ל על הפסוק להורות לפניו גשנה ממדרש מובא ברש"י בפירוש רש"י? So we see the way the אלטער רבי said to him, that the פשט that that that he sent יהודה to prepare a place to learn, he said, it says that in מדרש, brought down in רש"י. Why did he bring it from the מדרש? ולא מפירוש רש"י עצמו? He could bring it directly from רש"י! And to a child you would probably speak from רש"י rather than from other מפרשים. בעל כורחך צריך לומר, so we must say, שאף שמובא בפירוש רש"י גם כן מתרצת השאלה, that even what רש"י, the way רש"י says it, it'll also answer the question. שלכן הוסק במענה פירוש רש"י, that's why he mentions in the answer, he mentions רש"י, וכל זה יתווסף בזה על ידי ההוספה שבמדרש. But he brought the מדרש because there'll be an additional point in the answer if you bring it from the מדרש. So רש"י itself the way he says it would have been an answer to the question, but he wanted to give the answer even better. And now what the רבי is going to do, he's going to bring what actually says in it in מדרש more than רש"י, and he's going to ask, and we don't see what that adds. So he and he makes it a third שאלה. בפירוש רש"י מובא ממאמר חז"ל הנ"ל, In רש"י which he brings this מאמר חז"ל, the רש"י's לשון is like this: that what does it mean he sent him to גושן? לתקן לו בית תלמוד, to establish a place of learning, שמשם תצא הוראה, from there will come out teaching, הוראה in תורה. The מדרש מוסיף על זה, the מדרש adds a few words that this is a place where to make a בית תלמוד, ושיהיו השבטים הוגים בתורה, a place where the שבטים will learn a lot of תורה. וצריך להבין, so we have to understand כוונת אדמו״ר הזקן צו ווייזן איך שמבחר שנותיו של יעקב היו במצרים, he's trying to answer why יעקב אבינו's best years were in מצרים, יעקב's years. מה מוסיף בזה, what will be added when we add העניין שיהיו השבטים הוגים בתורה? All the מדרש adds, he adds that he made it, should make a place to learn where the שבטים would learn. Why is נוגע the שבטים? Question is, how is the best years of יעקב in מצרים? He would have said because he had a ישיבה there, he made a בית תלמוד, and יעקב was able to learn תורה. Cuz that's the question, how were יעקב's years in מצרים the best years? But he asks from, that would have been from רש״י. רש״י doesn't say about the שבטים. So make a בית תלמוד, you should be able to learn תורה. The מדרש that the, the אלטר רבי said adds that he made it so the שבטים should learn תורה. Why is that important? So the קשיא was what's wrong, why not from רש״י? רש״י he should have brought, cuz he's little kids, he should bring from רש״י. אלא מאי, there must be something in מדרש that adds to the פשט. What does it add? It adds that the שבטים? What's נוגע the שבטים here? And then if you look at אות ט', the רבי even asks a שאלה, גם, another question: למה בחר בהגירסא שיהיו השבטים הוגים בתורה ולא לומדים, אי שיהיו מלמדים את השבטים? במדרש itself, different מדרשים, some מדרשים it doesn't say it's a place where the שבטים will be הוגים בתורה. הוגים בתורה means האָרעווען, learning hard, toiling in תורה. Others say learning תורה. So the אלטר רבי chose this לשון, משמע that the fact that they were working hard and learning תורה adds also to it. What does that add to answer the שאלה that יעקב אבינו, his best years were in מצרים? ויובן בהקדם תוספת ביאור בשאלת הצמח צדק. To answer it, we have to first explain even more, something that needs to be explained in the question of the צמח צדק. Till now he asked on the אלטר רבי's answer, why, how he answered the question. But now he says let's understand the question of the צמח צדק. Question was, how could it be that the best years of יעקב were in מצרים? What's the problem? לכאורה אין לתמוה על עצם הדבר שמבחר שנותיו של יעקב היו דווקא י״ז שנים האחרונות שלו. There's no קשיא why his best years were when he was in מצרים, שהיה ביחד עם יוסף. That's when he was together with יוסף. Isn't that the best time he had? And what does that mean? It doesn't just mean that he happened to see יוסף, which he didn't know he would ever see him, he happened to see him. כי מובן ופשוט, it's very simple, שעיקר, כי שעיקר שמחתו של יעקב, the main שמחה of יעקב, who was the בחיר האבות, the chosen of the אבות, היתה על ידי זה שראה יוסף חי ומתנהג כבניו.

His greatest שמחה was that he not only saw יוסף, he saw יוסף that יוסף is behaving like it fits for a son of יעקב. עומד בצדקותו גם לאחר ימי זמן ארוך בארץ מצרים. He's still the same צדיק even though he's a long time in מצרים. That's probably, אפשר פשוט is the greatest שמחה you could have. וזה גם מובן מדברי רש״י בביאור סיפור הכתוב. That actually is understood, this idea that by him the main thing was that he sees that he still, that he is behaving the way he's supposed to, is the way רש״י explains when the פסוק says לאחר שנתבשר יעקב כי יוסף חי וגו׳. יעקב was told that יוסף is alive. The פסוק says ויפג לבו. He didn't believe it. Says his heart turned, he didn't trust, he didn't believe it. Then עד, till כי וירא את העגלות, he saw the wagons, ותחי רוח יעקב אביהם. Then he believed it and then his spirit got high, etc., etc. So רש״י explains, what does that mean? שדווקא כשראה יעקב את העגלות, אז ותחי רוחו. Only when he saw the wagons, that's when his spirit became alive again. What did the wagons have to, why when he saw the wagons that's when he became alive? So רש״י says, סימן מסר להם באותו יוסף, when he gave, sent the wagon, it wasn't just that he saw the wagons. By sending the wagons, יוסף sent a סימן to his father, the פרשה that the last thing that he learned with his father before he left was פרשת עגלה ערופה, from the same word of עגלות, עגלה ערופה. זהו שנאמר רש״י, that's what it means, וירא את העגלות אשר שלח יוסף, that he saw the wagons that יוסף sent, because באמת יוסף didn't send the wagons. פרעה said to send the wagons, פרעה sent the wagons. So רש״י says, what does it mean? He saw what יוסף meant by sending. In the wagons, יוסף sent a רמז that he learned תורה. And that's what made יעקב happy, and that's what made יעקב ותחי רוח יעקב אביהם. הרי, we see from this רש״י שעיקר שמחתו של יעקב ושלימותו, that the main שמחה of יעקב, and when was it complete? בא that came בראותו שיוסף עומד במצב רוחני נעלה, when he saw that יוסף is in a very high רוחניותדיקע מצב, ותורתו וצדקתו עמו כמו מקודם. that his צדקות and his תורה is like before. And he saw that from the fact that יוסף sent him the עגלות. Now, the אות י"ג, the רבי ווארנט, אף שבפשטות הטעם לכאורה, that's not the פשט. The פשט, why didn't he not believe before, and when he saw the wagons he believed? כי בתחילה לא האמין להם, first he didn't believe that יוסף is alive, רק אחר שמסר להם סימן, then האמין להם, after he got a סימן. So, לכאורה, it's nothing to do בפשטות. Why would it be because it עגלה ערופה? It could be any סימן. How did יוסף send a סימן to his father? By something that no one else knew, only he knew. So when his father heard that he gave him a סימן of something that no one knows, obviously יוסף sent it. So לכאורה it's nothing to do דווקא because of the עגלות. But the רבי says, no. הרי מזה שהכתוב מספר, לא רק שמסר להם סימן סתם, by the תורה telling us not just סתם that he gave a סימן, אלא גם מה היה הסימן, he gave - the the פסוק says what the סימן was, what was the סימן, מה שהיה עוסק כשפירש ממנו בפרשת עגלה ערופה, that he was learning תורה, ענין של לימוד התורה, מוכח מזה, that proves it. So what proves to רש"י that it was because he saw that he's learning תורה? Because otherwise to just say, send him a סימן, could could have sent him a סימן that the last meal I ate with you, I ate with you potatoes. It would also been an אות, and no one knew that, that he would know that יוסף is alive. Why is it important to say that it was פארבונדן with that he told him what he learned? Showing that that's not the point, סתם a סימן that he knows he's alive. He knows how he's alive, that he's alive as a צדיק. וזהו גם מה שאמר יעקב ליוסף בבואו למצרים, that's when יעקב came to מצרים he said to יוסף like this: אחרי ראותי את פניך כי עודך חי. Now I could I could die already, because now I saw your face that you are still alive. And before that he didn't know he's alive? וכי דווקא ראיית פנים מוכיחה שהוא חי? Only seeing his face showed that he's alive? He already knew that he's alive! אלא שהכוונה בזה, what he meant to say, לצידקותו וחיותו הרוחנית, that now I see that your מצב רוחני, your spiritual מצב is the way it's supposed to be. שאת זה ראה יעקב בפניו של יוסף, that he only saw when he saw יוסף's face. And צדיקים we know look at a face and they could tell, so he looked at his face and he saw that he's a צדיק. Then he said, that's the שמחה. וזהו עיקר סיבת שמחתו, that's the main שמחה. So if that's so, ומזה מובן, for that we could understand, שהשמחה זו של יעקב בראיית פני יוסף, that the שמחה that יעקב had by seeing יוסף's face, היתה שמחה, ענין נעלה ביותר, was a great שמחה. And especially the שמחה happened דווקא במצרים ערות הארץ. In מצרים, which is a low land, ערות הארץ, so the שמחה is even stronger, כי יתרון האור מן החושך. In the place of darkness, there he saw that יוסף is alive with צדקות! That's the greatest שמחה. Okay. That's how we would learn פשט why his שמחה was so great. ומכיון שכן, if so, שאלת הצמח צדק, וכן אריכות מענה אדמו"ר הזקן טעונה ביאור. But the הצמח צדק's question and the whole אריכות of the אלטר רבי's answer needs explanation. What's the question? Can't understand why he came and saw יוסף as a צדיק in מצרים, the biggest שמחה. So that's the best years יעקב had. Why, what's the קשיא of the צמח צדק? הביאור בזה, the answer is like

this: מצרים represents in a לשון מצרים וגבולים. מצרים represent, the word מצרים means limitations, limitations, הגבלות, limits, which means, and what's פשט ארץ מצרים? ארץ מצרים means ארץ שאינה נותנת מקום לגילוי אלקותו יתברך הבלתי בעל גבול. דער אייבערשטער is not מוגבל, דער אייבערשטער is בלי גבול. עולם הזה is גבול. So ארץ מצרים represents the idea that there is a place which is הגבלה, and אלקות cannot be is not revealed there. אלקות is בלי גבול, and if it's a place that's only גבול, so אלקות is not revealed. And this this is באמת in every place. Every place in the world is הגבלה, is a מצר, and there's no בלי גבול there. ועוד יותר, but in מצרים it's even more, היא ערות הארץ, מקום החטא והקליפות המעלימים ומסתירים על כל ענין אלוקי בכלל. Not only there's not too much אלקות, any ענין אלוקי, when you're doing עבירות or you're doing what they did in מצרים, all די ענינים of immorality and things like that, that's the really העלם on אלקות which is בלי גבול. And that's what ארץ מצרים is. ותכלית עבודת האדם היא, what is the job of a איד, what the תכלית? לצאת מן המצרים והגבולים, to go out of these limitations. What does that mean בפועל? היינו שירגיש את הגילוי אור אלוקי, you should feel אלקות, which is בלתי בעל גבול, which is not מוגבל, שעל ידי זה זה יתעלה לעבוד את השם בלי כל מיני הגבלות. If you feel אלוקות, which is בלי גבול, it gives you the ability to serve השם בלי גבול. Now, what does it mean בלי גבול to serve השם? You don't serve השם בלי גבול, we're all מוגבל. Beyond your limitations. You're able to give צדקה. You're only able to give a dollar, you give a dollar, give two dollars. You're going beyond. But why? Because you recognize the אייבערשטער, who is בלי גבול, gives you the כח to go בלי גבול. So that's the פשט מצרים and the כוונה is to go out of מצרים. וזו היא נקודת שאלתו של הצמח צדק על אדמו"ר הזקן, and this was the הצמח צדק asked, the נקודה what he asked the אלטר רבי as a as a kid. הן אמת, it's true, שדווקא בי"ז שנה האחרונות בא יעקב לשמחה ועונג רוחני במדרגה נעלית כזו, true, I know that, he said.

He didn't say it, but that's what he meant. That the greatest שמחה that יעקב had is the 17 years in מצרים. שלא הגיע לה עד אז. Till then, he never had such a great שמחה. So even though it was in מצרים, but in מצרים גופא he saw יוסף as a צדיק, greatest שמחה. אבל אידך, but on the other hand, הרי הירידה של מצרים, but the mere fact that he came down to מצרים, which represents מצרים וגבולים וערות הארץ, it represents the real limitations on Godliness, the real העלם והסתר on Godliness, ערות הארץ, פועל העלם והסתר, על כל פנים הגבלה בתכלית השלימות של עבודתו יתברך. It causes a הגבלה in your עבודה to השם. What's the עבודה to השם? לצאת לגמרי מהגבלות העולם, to go out from the הגבלות of the world. כי אם הרגשת אלוקותו יתברך שלמעלה מן הטבע. You should feel אלוקות that's higher than טבע. Being in מצרים is a place where you can't feel that. So, on one hand, he understands that it's a great שמחה, a great תענוג he had knowing, seeing his son. But to say that's his best years? What's the עיקר of of of יעקב? His עבודת השם. Being in מצרים, where it's very hard to serve השם properly, which means to feel the בלי גבול of השם, ומצד זה, איך אפשר ששני חייו בעבודתו במצרים נקראו מבחר שנותיו? How could the years of מצרים be the best years? ובפרט בערך שני חייו בארץ ישראל, especially in comparison to the years he lived in ארץ ישראל, מקום המתאים לקדושת עולה תמימה קודש קדשים. ארץ ישראל fits קודש קדשים. And

the רבי brings here רש"י in תולדות. יצחק wanted to leave ארץ ישראל when there was a hunger like his father, like אברהם, and go to מצרים, and the אייבערשטער said, "No, you can't go מצרים, you can't go out of ארץ ישראל. Why? Cuz you're a קרבן. You're a עולה תמימה. So you have you're קודש קדשים. So you belong in ארץ ישראל." So what do we see from that רש"י? ארץ ישראל, אפילו בפשוטו של מקרא, ארץ ישראל is a place of קדושה, a place where you feel more the בלי גבול of the אייבערשטער. So we're saying here that where did יעקב have his best years? In מצרים, which is the complete opposite. בכלל, it's hard to see in a place where there's so much הגבלות and so much העלם והסתר on אלוקות, that should be his best years? His עבודה couldn't be too strong, especially when we compare it to ארץ ישראל. The most of his Many, not most, many of his other years lived in ארץ ישראל, and still, this is better years? How could that be? That was his question. על זה בא במאמר אדמו"ר הזקן, so the אלטר רבי answers like this: שיעקב השתדל לבית תלמוד במצרים. יעקב had prepared and established a place to learn in מצרים. ועל ידי התורה, if you learn תורה, הנה גם במצרים היה המצב באופן של ויחי. Even in מצרים, you could live, you could live a proper life if you have the תורה. על ידי לימוד התורה, through learning תורה, המגביה את האדם הלומד, it picks up the person who learns למעלה מכל מיני הגבלות. If you connect yourself to תורה, you go higher than the הגבלות. And therefore, אפשר להתעלות גם במצרים לבחינת ויחי. In מצרים you can also live. And when we say "live", it means חיים אמיתיים, the real life. והטעם, how does תורה do that? If the place you're living in is a place where there's no גילוי אלוקות, how could the תורה bring it? So he

explains: התורה מושרשת בעצמותו יתברך. תורה is מושרשת is enrooted in the עצמות of the אייבערשטער, the עצם of the אייבערשטער. And he quotes in the bottom in הערה 22 from תניא, כאילו נתן the אייבערשטער gave us the תורה, כאילו נתן לנו את עצמי כביכול. Like he gave himself. the אלטער רבי מביא את דרשת רז״ל על הפסוק, here's one of the explanations, מדרש. The question was why does he not bring it from רש״י? רש״י says the same thing, but the מדרש adds a few words. That's why he brings from the מדרש עם ההוספה, and the מדרש adds the words ושיהיו השבטים הוגים בתורה. The שבטים, you know he opened a ישיבה, the שבטים should be able to toil in תורה, כנ״ל סעיף ד׳ like we said before. When we say there is יתרון האור מן החושך, יש ב' פירושים, there are two פשטים in it, which means not just two פשטים, two אופנים, the two things that happen then when you have light coming from darkness. Whenever we say that, commonly say that light after darkness is stronger, in פשוט פשט, what does it mean? If you're sitting in a dark room and then you walk out to the light, the light seems stronger. You feel it's stronger. Is the light טאקע stronger? Is there more light here? You see the strength of the light, which in the darkness it doesn't it's not when you don't have it, you don't Here you see what If you have a light room the whole time, you don't see the strength of it. And when we talk about the אייבערשטער, oh, from in a place where it's dark, you see the greatness of the light. Second way is החושך עצמו מואר ונהפך לאור, the darkness itself shines. ועל ידי זה נעשה יתרון בהאור, so the light באמת טאקע becomes more, שנמשך בו בחינות נעלות יותר שאינו בהאור מצד עצמו. There's a certain level in the light that happens if it's the darkness becomes light. Now I don't know if in גשמיות there is such a thing. See, normally יתרון האור מן החושך we always use as a גשמיותדיקע thing: the light after darkness, you know, when you bring light to darkness it's a stronger light. So it's not that it just comes to light up the place. It has a פעולה on the darkness, so the darkness is a מציאות and it could change him to light. So on one hand, which way is a stronger, higher מדרגה? A higher מדרגה is the first one, that לגבי the אור there is no darkness בכלל, אלא מאי, and the אור has a כח to light up the darkness. Why mention the שבטים? בכדי לרמז לביאור זה, דיתרון האור הנמשך מן החושך, to be מרמז, to hint to this ענין that he was able to change darkness to light, not only bringing light into darkness, which means the light itself has nothing to do with darkness, the light itself of light, it just comes there, but it had to do overcoming, transforming the darkness. And that's hinted in the word שבטים. הנה we know like this: אבות הם בחינת אצילות. אבות is a מדרגה of אצילות, which is in אצילות it says there is no ענין of חושך. It says לא יגורך רע, there is no, רע, bad means where there is darkness, העלם על אלוקות, there is no such thing in אצילות. But the שבטים, the לשון המשכה, the שבטים, the word שבט means המשכה, כמו ככוכבא, ככוכבא דשביט. A shooting star is called a ככוכבא דשביט, means it's shooting, it's going, המשכה. But we want, the צמח צדק wanted, the אלטר רבי wanted to show that what happening here is that he changed over the darkness into light, so you had to have the שייכות to some darkness. בריאה, יצירה, עשיה, בי״ע is already a beginning of darkness. ולכן מביא אדמו״ר הזקן מהמדרש, that's why he brings from the מדרש, שהיו שם, that is, שהיו השבטים הוגים בתורה, the שבטים should learn תורה. כי כיוון שהשבטים הם בי״ע, שבטים בי״ע, which בי״ע is already עלמא דפירודא, it's a place already of פירוד, it's a place where it's separated from השם כביכול, and it's a place where it's already dark, ומקום החושך, a place of darkness, הרי על ידי לימודם בתורה בארץ מצרים, by them learning תורה in מצרים, פעלו להאיר את החושך גופא שהוא בבחינת מציאות לגביהם, and they were part of the darkness because they are also בי״ע, so that caused that the מציאות of חושך they should light it up, על ידי שהפכו את החושך לאור, and they changed, transformed the darkness into light, נמשך להם יתרון האור הבא מן החושך עצמו. Now, if the whole thing was the מעלה of being in מצרים, transforming the darkness of מצרים through תורה, and that's the best years that you could have, and that's the best years of יעקב because he had a חלק in the transformation of the

That's not a דרך what you should do, a person shouldn't do that. ואף שעל ידי עבודת האדם באופן של ניסיונות, when a person has tests, כשיש לו מניעות ועכובים בקיום התורה והמצוות, and he has obstacles in order to do תורה ומצוות, ומתגבר עליהם, and he overcomes it, ועומד בניסיון, he stands the... he passes the test, מתעלה לדרגה גבוהה כזו, he reaches such a high level, שלולי הניסיון לא היה מגיע לזה. If not for the test, he wouldn't reach it. So we see here there is a... we started saying, "Don't look for darkness. Stay away from darkness. Just do what you're supposed to in good." איי, what do you mean? There's a big מעלה to have obstacles, darkness, and overcome it.

It's only if it happens. כשהובא למקום סכנה רוחנית, if you are brought to a place which is a רוחניותדיקע danger, ועמד בניסיונות, you happen to be there, you didn't come there בכוונה, you happen to be there and you pass the test, על ידי זה מתעלה בעבודתו ביתר שאת, ושלא בערך ממדרגתו הקודמת, you reach a higher מדרגה, much more than before. ועל דרך זה אדם שכבר חטא רחמנא ליצלן, a person has sinned already, he did עבירות, הנה על ידי תשובתו השלמה, עד שנעשה לו... זדונות נעשו לו כזכויות, and through the due, proper תשובה till the עבירות become מצוות, הוא זוכה לעילוי זה שאמרו רז״ל, he is זוכה to this great מדרגה, חז״ל say, "במקום..." which צדיקים are not, they can't reach. אבל אל יעמוד אדם במקום סכנה. A person shouldn't come there in the place of סכנה. אסור להעמיד עצמי את עצמי לכתחילה במצב של נסיונות. You're not allowed to put yourself in a נסיון ובמקום שעשוי לבוא לידי חטא, in a place where you might come to an עבירה. You can't do that. Certainly you can't go with עבירות saying I'll go do עבירות so I should do תשובה and reach the מדרגה of תשובה. ולא עוד אלא שמתפללים בכל יום, not only not allowed to do it, we דאווען to the אייבערשטער, ואל תביאנו לידי נסיון, do not bring us to a נסיון. שגם מלמעלה יביאו לזה, not only I don't want to go I shouldn't go to it, I'm asking the אייבערשטער please don't bring me to it. But אבל אלו שחטאו פגמו ועברו על הדרך, רחמנא ליצלן, those that already sinned, שלכאורה כבר נפלו תחת השליטה של המצרים והגבולים דמצרים, you can't say don't be trapped by מצרים, you're trapped already! You fell into the limitations. איך אפשר להם להגיע לבחינת ויחי? How could they have the ויחי, that even there you there it's not living. If someone says, I'll sin, I'll do תשובה, the אויבערשטער doesn't help him to do תשובה. שנופל גם ממדרגתו שלפני זה, he even fall from before. So you can't do that. So ממילא, that, you can't do. But if you happen to be there, or let's say you were sent there, so there, you got to change over the darkness. So someone who's working with the with people who do עבירות, or the person himself who did עבירות, has to know that he could reach a higher מדרגה, which is, and that will be the the best years of his. The תשובה will be the best years. A ייד can attain, I someone might attain, and this is a very interesting piece now. למה יגרע חלקי? This guy who does everything good and didn't do עבירות, doesn't have the מעלה of תשובה, could attain, why does he lose out? שלא יוכל להגיע ליתרון אור הנמשך מן החושך באופן נעלה, that he can't reach that מדרגה of the מעלה of the light that comes from changing darkness, משום שהוא הולך בעבודתו בדרך הישרה, because he goes in the right way? It's called חוטא נשכר. The guy who sins, he gains, but I'm a good guy, I'm a צדיק, I'm losing? גם התשובה לטענה זו מרומזת במאמר אדמו״ר הזקן. This answer, answer to this is also hinted in the אלטער רבי's words. כמו שנתבאר לעיל, just like we said before, שמצד דרגת יעקב עצמו לא היה שייך גילוי ד״יתרון אור מן החושך״. We said יעקב himself was אצילות, he wasn't שייך to darkness. So how did he accomplish, we say, the best years, because he changed the darkness to light? Because the שבטים learned תורה, and the שבטים were able to change the darkness. But that's not יעקב. So what did we say before? Why is it attributed to יעקב that his best years? Because בגלל זה שעל ידי העסק, העסק שלו שהשבטים יהיו בקיאים בתורה Since he worked that the שבטים should learn, he גיל, he הגיע גם הוא לבחינת ״ויחי יעקב״, תכלית העילוי ד״יתרון אור מן החושך״. So he had a share in what the שבטים accomplished by changing, transforming the darkness. If you make another person a בעל תשובה, you have a share in him. על ידי כל זה מקרבים ביאת משיח, we're מקרב the coming of משיח, which also לאתבא צדיקיא בתיובתא, משיח will make the צדיקים will do תשובה, that means they'll have the מעלה of תשובה also. So that's what we can do now. A צדיק, a as we call, frum from birth, who is could have the מעלה of a בעל תשובה, is by making other people בעלי תשובה.
