Concerning the שיחה that we're learning this week in the project ליקוטי שיחות, the first שיחה of פרשת תולדות, I would like to give a little bit background. Two points. Number one, if you look at the end of the שיחה, it says, "משיחת שבת פרשת חיי שרה תש"ל." At the end of every שיחה, it says when the רבי said the שיחה. So, people asked me, it's probably a mistake, because it's a שיחה on פרשת תולדות, so here it says, "משיחת שבת פרשת חיי שרה תש"ל," מסתמא it's from פרשת תולדות and it's a mistake. That's one thing I want to discuss, and also you see after the שיחה, there is a הוספה, and that came from שיחת שבת פרשת תולדות תשל"ד. What does that mean? So, I just want to explain what happened. Number one, concerning the first thing, this is actually a שיחה from פרשת חיי שרה תש"ל, not from פרשת תולדות. In the פארברענגען of פרשת חיי שרה תש"ל, the רבי spoke the רש"י of פרשת תולדות, this רש"י. And the רבי connected this רש"י to קאפיטל פ"א in תהלים. And the רבי even mentioned by פארברענגען that this is in honor of somebody who became, whose birthday is going to be that week, his 80th birthday. And I looked it up in the הנחה to see if I remember correctly. It doesn't say that the רבי said it, but the way I remember that the רבי said by פארברענגען that this is in honor of ידידנו, used to refer to שז"ר as ידידנו, and that week is going to be שז"ר's 80th birthday. So, in honor of his birthday, the רבי in the פארברענגען before his birthday, the רבי explained a רש"י of that week of פרשת תולדות. In the פרשת חיי שרה, he spoke a רש"י on פרשת תולדות, and in that רש"י, the רבי connected it to קאפיטל פ"א, which is the קאפיטל that you start saying when you become 80 years old. So, that's why it's from פרשת חיי שרה, but it's a שיחה in פרשת תולדות. And as the רבי said, this was is in honor of the birthday of שז"ר. That's בנוגע דעם ענין. Then, the fact that there is a הוספה here, which is something very seldom, we do find in another place where there is a little this is a very seldom thing, what happened here is like this. I'll start from the beginning. I heard once from somebody who heard from a person who went into יחידות, and the רבי told him an interesting וואָרט. And he told me that the רבי told that person, he heard it correctly from him, the רבי told him an interesting

point. We're talking about the מנהג that's מקובל from the בעל שם טוב that you should say the קאפיטל תהלים of your age. למשל, if you're 13, you say קאפיטל י"ד, if you're 14, you say ט"ו, etc., etc. So, the רבי told him an interest interesting רמז. The רמז is that קאפיטל ע"ב finishes with כלו תפלות דוד בן ישי, that the תפלות of דוד were finished. Now, קאפיטל ע"ב is באמת קאפיטל ע"א, because the גמרא says that the first two קאפיטלעך are really one קאפיטל. ממילא, according to that, קאפיטל ע"ב is קאפיטל ע"א, and it says that that's when דוד finished his his his תפלות. So, it means that when he was 70 years old when he passed away, he was saying קאפיטל ע"ב, which is really really קאפיטל ע"א. So, from here, we see a רמז to say the קאפיטל of the next one according to your age. So, this person told this to me. When I heard it, I heard it's a וואָרט the רבי never said it by פארברענגען, and never heard it anything, and the רבי said it to this person. It's a וואָרט, we've got to write it down someplace it should be, and the רבי should be מגיה to see how it's exact. So, I

went over to ר' יואל, and I told ר' יואל this וואָרט, and I said, "If ever comes out that there's a שיחה which mentions in the ליקוט that you're going to write that mentions the ענין of saying the קאפיטל תהלים according to your age, put this in as the רבי's וואָרט, if not, it's going to get lost." And ר' יואל, and it טאקע came once that that happened, and he ר' יואל told me he's not going to do it, because if he's going to put that in, it'll be מעורר, the רבי will write him, "How could you write that just the way it is? בשעת we follow that קאפיטל א' and ב' are two קאפיטלעך, so it's not ע"א, it's ע"ב. It's meant a גאנצע שקלא וטריא and I'm going I can have what to answer to the רבי, I can't do it." So, לפועל, ר' יואל didn't do it. When it came to this שיחה in תשל"ד, when this ליקוט came out of this שיחה, which is the שיחה from תש"ל that the רבי said on פרשת תולדות, where he talks about פ"א being the קאפיטל for 80 years old, so then here, I had a chance, and I wrote the שיחה, so I wrote, "Put in this הערה, because it's a וואָרט of the רבי which we wanted to save, so put in this הערה." And the רבי was מגיה for the ליקוט, and the רבי added, the הערה just said this וואָרט that we see a רמז from the קאפיטל ע"ב, כלו תפלות דוד בן ישי, because it's really קאפיטל ע"א. The רבי added a lot to it, as you see the הערה became very big, he added a whole bunch of things to it. Then, שבת by פארברענגען, I actually wasn't there, I was already in Miami, but שבת by פארברענגען, the רבי spoke about it, and happened exactly what ר' יואל was afraid of. The רבי said that you're saying here and even though it says here לחידודא, "But how could you say that this is קאפיטל ע"ב ע"א when really it's ע"ב?" The רבי asked the שאלה, and the רבי went into a whole אריכות to explain why it's well according to one חשבון ע''ב, which means אלף and בית are one, or the other חשבון it's not. And the רבי went to explain it. And after שבת the רבי asked that this שיחה that he said concerning this piece, should be given into the רבי. And the רבי was מגיה it. And the רבי said that in the next ליקוט they should add it as a הוספה to the ליקוט of פרשת תולדות. So in the next ליקוט this was printed and that's a הוספה to פרשת תולדות. It happens sometimes that the רבי within the next week's ליקוט add something that has that's a הוספה to the previous ליקוט. So when it went to the ספר when it became these ליקוטים became ספרים, it put was put into its proper place. So therefore after the שיחה this we have this a הוספה to עמוד 75 להערה ב' בהערה 31. This a הוספה to the שולי הגליון, which the רבי would call הערה ב' means like a second הערה to the הערה 31, which is שולי הגליון, and that was put in because the רבי was מגיה it after that שבת. And if you see in the end of this extra piece, a הוספה, it says משיחת שבת פרשת תולדות תש''ל-ד, that's the year when these ליקוטים came out. So that was from that שבת. The רבי spoke about it, and it was מוגה and went into the ספר later on. But what I saw from here is that ר' יואל had the real understanding. He knew exactly the style of the רבי, whatever we could call style, that if you just write it, it's not going to pass. The רבי has to have everything מדויק, so you had to have a ביאור. So, and that's what the רבי did. The רבי actually added a ביאור. In

ליקוטי שיחות חלק י' page 81, הערה 9, at the end, the רבי mentions what it says in the גמרא ברכות, לוו עלי ואני פורע, which means that if a person doesn't have money to buy special food for שבת, he should borrow, עלי, the אויבערשטער says on my חשבון, and I will pay. And then the רבי says וראה אור תורה להרב המגיד בסופו, and look up the ספר אור תורה written by the תורה of the מגיד of מעזריטש at the end. And then it says in brackets these words, וכן צריך להיות בהערה דהתוועדות שבת פרשת בראשית תשל''ג, so to that's how it's supposed to say in the רשימת דברים, which means in the הנחה of the פארברענגען of שבת פרשת בראשית תשל''ג, שזהו תורת הרב המגיד, that this is תורה of the מגיד, and then it says in parentheses, ולא להבעל שם, it's not the בעל שם טוב. So people ask, what is the meaning of this הערה? So I want to say that by the פארברענגען of שבת בראשית that year, תשל''ג, that's the year that this שיחה that is printed in ליקוטי שיחות here חלק י' for פרשת תולדות, that's the year the שיחה came out. But that year שבת פרשת בראשית, the רבי mentioned this תורה concerning the פסוק לוו עלי, but the רבי said that this is a תורה of the בעל שם טוב. So, when the רבי was מגיה this שיחה for פרשת תולדות, and he mentioned this ווארט, which is of the מגיד, so the רבי added that you this is how it's supposed to say also in the הנחה from the פארברענגען of שבת פרשת בראשית תשל''ג, that it's a תורה of the מגיד, and he underlined the word הרב המגיד and not the בעל שם טוב. Because the way he said it, it said it was from the בעל שם טוב. So he said that it's supposed to supposed to fix it over there, and it's supposed to say that this is a תורה of the מגיד. So the רבי used the opportunity here in this הנחה, in this שיחה that the רבי was מגיה for שבת פרשת תולדות תשל''ג, the ליקוט for that week took the opportunity to mention that what it's he said in the פארברענגען of שבת פרשת בראשית, a few weeks before, it's supposed to be that this is a תורה of the מגיד, not of the בעל שם טוב. למעשה that הנחה of that פארברענגען hadn't come out yet when this רבי was מגיה the שיחה, this ליקוט for פרשת תולדות. So when it came to give out that הנחה, there was a שאלה, how should we write it there? Should we write over there לכתחילה this is a תורה of the מגיד, but then no one will understand this הערה here. No one will understand. What does it mean וכן צריך להיות over there that this is a תורה of the מגיד? Should we write that this is a תורה of the בעל שם טוב and then on the bottom of the הערה write that the רבי later said that this is really a תורה, write בעל שם טוב and write on the bottom it's a תורה of the מגיד. We didn't know if that's what the רבי wanted. The bottom line, we decided that we're going to write לכתחילה this is a תורה of the מגיד, as the רבי says here to fix. איי, people will not understand exactly what the רבי means here, so I'm explaining it טאקע now, that this was written because by the פארברענגען, the רבי said it's a תורה of the בעל שם טוב, so the רבי wrote here that that has to be in that הנחה it's supposed to say that this is a תורה of the מגיד.
