שיחה we're going to learn today is in חלק ט"ו, פרשת ויחי, the first שיחה. It is a pretty long שיחה, but the תוכן is a very interesting שיחה. The רבי starts the שיחה by bringing the פסוק "ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה". יעקב lived in מצרים 17 years. "ויהיו ימי יעקב", and the days of יעקב, the פסוק, the פסוק continues, was 147 years. That's what the פסוק tells us. פרעגט מען, so the מפרשים ask, the אלשיך, the אור החיים, פאר וואס דארף די תורה שרייבן בפירוש די צאל יארן וואס יעקב האט געלעבט אין מצרים? Why does the תורה have to specify clearly the amount of years he lived in מצרים? ס'שטייט דאך שוין אין דער פריערדיקער סדרה, it says in the previous סדרה, אז קומענדיק אין מצרים איז ער געווען "ימי שני מגורי שלשים ומאת שנה", that when he came in מצרים he said, "I'm 130 years old." און אין דעם פסוק גופא זאגט די תורה, and in the same פסוק the תורה says, "ויהיו ימי יעקב שני חייו שבע שנים וארבעים ומאת שנה", that the whole life of יעקב was 147 years, איז אלזא פשוט פארשטענדלעך, from that we understand, אז אין מצרים האט ער געלעבט 17 יאר, in מצרים he lived 17 years. 17 years. ומה נפקא מינה אויסצוטיילן באזונדער יעקבס יארן אין מצרים? What's the purpose, why is it important to mention the 17 years in מצרים specifically? Since we know from before he was 130 when he came to מצרים and the פסוק further says that he was 147 when he passed away, so obviously we know he lived in מצרים 17 years.

Why does the תורה have to specifically write that he lived in מצרים for 17 years? ולאידך, on the other hand, אויב מע איז א טעם שיהא, וויל די תורה אויסטיילן די יארן וואס ער האט געלעבט אין מצרים, if for some reason the תורה feels it wants to mention specifically the amount of years he lived in מצרים, then we have an opposite question. And before I read it inside, I want to say what the question is. Then it didn't have to say how old he was when he passed away. קומט עס דאך בהמשך צו דער פריערדיקער סדרה אז ער איז אלט געווען ק"ל שנה. This comes בהמשך to the previous סדרה where it says he lived for 130, he was 130 years old. And now if the תורה is going to add that he lived in מצרים 17 years, if the תורה wants to specifically write how many years he lived in מצרים, איז דאך איבעריק לכאורה צו געבן דעם סך הכל פון זיינע יארן. So it's extra to give the sum total. If the תורה would say that he lived in מצרים 17 years, that would be enough. Because we know before that he was 130 when he came, another 17 he lived in מצרים, so we know that he was 147 when he passed away. דער חשבון איז קלאר פון זיך אליין. The חשבון is clear, the counting is clear on its own. פארענטפערן מפרשים, so מפרשים answer like this: אז פארטיילט די תורה אויס די צאל יארן וואס יעקב האט געוואוינט אין מצרים, the reason why the תורה specifies the amount of years that יעקב lived in מצרים is, און זאגט דערויף "ויחי", and it says the word "ויחי", he lived in מצרים 17 years, ווייל די ק"ל שנה ביז דעמאלט זענען ביי יעקב נישט געווען גערעכנט פאר יארן פון לעבן, because the years before that, before he got to מצרים, the 130 years is not counted years of life, living. און דער טעם איז, the reason is, ווייל "רעים היו ימי שני חיי", as יעקב told פרעה when he visited פרעה, bad were the days of my life, פול מיט עמל ואנחה, full of hardships and sighing and trouble. פריער זיין אנטלויפן פון עשו, first he's crying to run away from עשו, דאן זיין געפינען זיך ביי לבנן, then when he was by לבן, was "ביום אכלני חרב וקרח בלילה", he said that the day it was hot and cold at night, ותדד שנתי מעיני, I didn't sleep at night, all kinds of problems. אזוי ווייטער, and further, ביז צו מכירת יוסף, then when יוסף was sold. So all these years were years of hardship. You can't really call that he really lived a proper life.

קומענדיק אבער אין מצרים האט ער קיין צרות נישט געליטן. When he came to מצרים, he didn't suffer any problems. פארקערט, ער האט דארט געלעבט א לעבן פון שלום ומנוחה, he lived there a life of peace and calmness, זיצנדיק אין מיטב הארץ, living in the best of the land, זעענדיק אז אלע זיינע קינדער זענען גאנץ, seeing that all his children are complete, און יוסף אלס משנה למלך, יוסף he saw him as a משנה למלך and he's still complete. און פאר דאס ערשט דעמאלט געווען "ויחי יעקב". Then was "ויחי יעקב". So this answered one part of the question: Why does the תורה specifically want to specify the years that יעקב lived in מצרים? To tell us "ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה", that the 17 years in מצרים, those were alive. So the תורה wanted to tell us special about these 17 years that they were the real life, not like the other years. But then the question comes up, so okay, so the תורה should have said that he lived 70 years, 17 years in מצרים, and not say that he was 147 when he passed away, because that we know ourselves. Since he was 130 when he came, and the תורה will tell us he lived 17 years in מצרים, we know he's 147. So then he continues, the מפרשים say like this, און די תורה איז כולל אלע זיינע יארן צוזאמען אין א סך הכל פון די קמ"ז שנה. In addition, although the תורה counts the 17 years in מצרים to tell us that was his real life, then the תורה also puts all the 147 years together כדי צו אָנדײַטן, to show with this, אַז די לעצטע 17 יאָר, די ויחי יאָרן, האָבן געמאַכט פֿאַרגעסן דעם צער און עגמת נפש פֿון די אַלע פֿריִערדיקע יאָרן זיינע.

The last 17 years made him forget the suffering that he had all the previous years, ביז זיי האָבן אַלע אויסגעזען ווי גוטע יאָרן. This made them all look like good years. כולם שווין לטובה, they're all equal לטובה, as רש״י says in many places that when you say all the years together it shows that they're all good. So that's what the פסוק, that's why the פסוק does both. The פסוק wants to specify the 17 years in מצרים to tell you that was ויחי יעקב, that's his real life. And תורה also puts all the years together, that he was 147 when he passed away, to put them all in one unit. That because he had these 17 good years, that made that all the years from before, that were not good living years, which means full of צער, they are all good because it made him forget the previous צער that he had, and now as if his whole life was good. That answers the קשיא. עס איז אָבער נאָך אַלץ ניט גלאַט, it's still not simple. אמת טאַקע אַז וויבאַלד די לעצטע יאָרן זענען געווען לטובה, האָבן זיי יעקבֿן אַזוי פֿאַרגוטיקט, true, that because the last 17 years were good, so they appeased יעקב, they compensated יעקב, ביז צו מאַכן אים פֿאַרגעסן די יסורים פֿון אַלע פֿריִערדיקע יאָרן, so, so much so that he forgot the pain, the suffering that he had in the previous years. That's only לגבי יעקבֿ'ס feeling. ווי קען אָבער מוסיף זײַן אַ סך־הכּל, how can we make them all together, the תורה adds a complete sum total, וואָס איז באַוווּסט, a total that we know already. Nevertheless the תורה went out of its way to tell us the total, איז ניט כדי מדגיש צו זײַן אַז כולם שווין? For the purpose of saying that they're all equal? When even though he טאַקע forgot, as far as the years are concerned they were not equal. Just יעקב, the last 17 years, he felt that he was compensated for the years before. און נאָך מער, not only are we telling you that they're all the same, כולם שווין לטובה, they're all good the same. בשעת 130 יאָר זענען געווען מעט ורעים, 130 years which is the mess- the main majority of his year were small, not counted as a real life and bad, the opposite of good, און די 17 יאָר זענען געווען ויחי, תכלית הטוב והחיים, and the 17 years were good. So can we טאַקע say that בעצם the years, all the other other 130 years were really good because of the last 17 years? In other words, לגבי יעקב you can say it, but when the תורה puts it, in a special extra which the תורה really didn't have have to do it, when the תורה puts it, can you say that it's to show that they're all good בעצם, these 17 years are good? There must be something more here. כדי דאָס צו פֿאַרשטיין, the Rebbe says, we'll understand it דורך מברר זײַן דברי המדרש, first to explain the words of the מדרש, און פירש רש״י, and what רש״י says in an anfanger seder, in the beginning of a seder, פרשת ויחי. The מדרש says, the מדרש says like this: למה פרשה זו סתומה מכל הפרשיות של תורה? Why is this פרשה stuffed up so to speak, more than the other פרשיות of the תורה? Which means like this, between every סדרה there's a extra space. Between the end, the last word, the last letter of a סדרה and the beginning of the next סדרה there's a space of quite a few letters. Between the end of ויגש and the end of ויחי there's nothing special, that's ממש the same way as if there's this the same space between one word and another, that's all, not more than that. So the מדרש asks, why is this פרשה סתומה, סתומה means stuffed up, there's no opening there. אלא the answer is, the מדרש says like this, three answers: Number one, כיוון שנפטר אברהם יעקב אבינו יעקב, נסתמו עיניהם ולבם של ישראל, that from when יעקב, our father יעקב passed away, the שעבוד, the hardships of מצרים, of the Egyptian עבדות started. That's why it means stuffed up, it stuffed up the ייִדן. And since יעקב passed away that's when the שעבוד started, so by end, when it talks about in the סדרה about the passing of יעקב, it's סתומה, that's one תירוץ. דבר אחר, another פשט, למה היא סתומה, why is it stuffed up, why is it closed up? מפני שביקש יעקב אבינו לגלות את הקץ ונסתם ממנו. יעקב אבינו wanted tried to reveal the end of times when משיח will come and it got stuffed up from him, he got it got forgotten from him. And דבר אחר, another פשט, למה היא סתומה, why is it closed up? מפני שנסתמו ממנו כל צרות שבעולם, because when he was in מצרים, all the צרות he had in the world were stuffed up or taken away. Here there were no צרות whatsoever, all the צרות were taken away. The Rebbe explains what this means. די קשיא למה פרשה זו סתומה מיינט אַ פשוט, when the מדרש asks why is this פרשה closed up, means very simple: פשוטו של מקרא, a simple פשט. דאָס וואָס עס איז ניטאָ קיין רווח פֿאַר די ווערטער ויחי יעקב, which is the beginning of the פרשה. וויבאַלד אַז עס הייבט זיך אָן אַ נײַע סדרה, it's a new סדרה, so there should be a space. So the question is, why is there No space. איז פארשטאנדיק, אז דא, ווי ביי אלע אנדערע סדרות פון דער תורה, so it's self-understood that just like all other סדרות of the תורה, here too, דארף זיין א הפסק פאר דער התחלת הפרשה פון ויחי יעקב, there should have been a space in between. So the

מדרש asks, why is there no space? And then the מדרש gives three answers. על פי הנ"ל, איז אינגאנצן נישט פארשטאנדיק, but based on what we said before, it's not understood. What's not understood? The סתימה פאר די פאר די ווערטער ויחי יעקב The fact that before the words ויחי יעקב it's closed up, there's no space, האט לכאורה צום אלע ערשטן געדארפט אנדייטן אויף א סתימה לטובה ולמעליותא. First and foremost, it's supposed to hint to some closing for good. וואס ויחי יעקב האט געהערט מיט יעקב. Since the פרשה is going to start with ויחי יעקב, יעקב was living, and he lived good years, and there is a סתימה right before that, so, בפשטות, that סתימה, that closing up, must be some hint for something good that happened to יעקב. דהיינו, דאס וואס דעמאלט איז נסתמו ממנו כל צרות שבעולם The third תירוץ of the מדרש says that this means it stopped up all the צרות, that will be the simplest פשט why before ויחי יעקב there is no space, it's closed up. So the question is why isn't that the first תירוץ? נאך שטארקער איז די שאלה, The שאלה is stronger. So far the שאלה is, the first תירוץ should have been that they stopped up all the צרות, because it says ויחי יעקב, and there's a סתימה before that, something that has to do with יעקב's life. And that is the third תירוץ, that יעקב's life became completely without צרות. But the קשיא is even stronger. אייך פאר דער סתירה סתימה In חומש, before this space which is supposed to be empty and it's not, which is the end of פרשת ויגש, דער סיום פון פרשת ויגש, דערציילט וועגן דעם דעם גוטן מצב החיים פון בני ישראל אין ארץ גושן. What are the last words in the end of פרשת ויגש? about the good life the אידן had in גושן. עס איז געווען אן אופן פון ויפרו וירבו מאד, that it was in a way that they multiplied a lot. So like this, the end of ויגש talks about the good. If so, ובשעת מעשה, גלייך נאך דעם, אן שום הפסק, דערציילט דער פסוק ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים And since right after that פסוק that talks about the good that happened to the אידן, there is no separation, there's no הפסק, and right away comes ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים, he lived in ארץ מצרים, איז doch די סברא מחייב, so the סברא tells you, אז בעצם דארף די סתימה אז דא דורך דער סתימה מיינט די תורה צו מאכן אזוי, that by closing it up, the תורה wants to stress, אז ויחי יעקב קומט בסמיכות, אן קיין הפסק אין זיין תוכן און טעמע מיטן סיום פון דער פריערדיקער פרשה. When we say there is no separation, that means that ויחי יעקב is comes ממש in one המשך to what it said before. What it said before is how good the אידן lived. And then it says ויחי יעקב without any separation, must be that this is an המשך to what the good things that happened as the תורה says in the end of ויגש. איז פארוואס קומט דער טעם פון נסתמו ממנו כל צרות שבעולם אין מדרש אלס לעצטע פון די טעמים? So why is this פשט that the reason it's closed up, to tell you that when יעקב was in מצרים, all his צרות were closed up, that's the last פשט? און די ערשטע The first ones, דאס הייסט עיקרדיקע, which automatically means that they are more important, special better תירוצים, זענען טעמים אויף אויף סתימת הפרשה, and which are the other reasons on the closeness, why the פרשה is closed, זענען גאר ענינים ענינים היפך פון ויפרו און ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים. Those are negative things. One thing is that they started having שעבוד מצרים. The other thing is that יעקב forgot the קץ. These are negative things. So it comes out like this. The פסוק tells us in the end of ויגש how things were good for יעקב, for אידן בכלל. Then the פסוק after at the beginning of ויחי says also how יעקב's life was in מצרים good life. And in the middle, there's a close, it's closed. Why? To tell you something negative. How does that make sense? The first thing should be the closeness should be that tells you a המשך. And the other תירוצים should maybe also be תירוצים, but why is not the first תירוץ the good one, that this shows that by יעקב, all his צרות were taken away? נאך מער איז שווער אין פירוש רש״י על התורה. This is a קשיא the way the מדרש puts it, why the מדרש brings that תירוץ as the third, the last one. A better קשיא is on רש״י. וויבאלד אז דרכו לפרש פשוטו של מקרא, since רש״י usually explains the simple פשט, האט ער לכאורה געדארפט ענטפערן אלס עיקר פון טעם הסתימה ויחי יעקב וואס דרוקט אויס אן ענין טוב בשייכות צו ויפרו וגו׳ און צו ויחי יעקב און צו חיי יעקב. So certainly in פשט, it would make sense that the סתימה, the fact that it's closed up there, is because it wants to connect the end of פרשת ויגש which is a good of אידן, and the beginning ויחי יעקב which is again good. So what would be the real, the simple פשט in פשוטו של מקרא why in between the two good things there's a סתימה? To show you there is a great connection between between the two because it's something good. And now, like we said before, it's connected to the life of יעקב. It was good in גושן, and straight, right away, without any separation it goes straight to the good of יעקב. און נישט צו אן ענין פון איפכא טבא. But why would we say that that the reason why the סתימה is there because of something negative? וואס איז פאראורזאכט געווארן דורך זיין פטירה, המשך ויחי יעקב. Something that happened because he passed away, bad things happened. In פשט, that wouldn't be the the simple פשט. The simple פשט would be that the reason it's closed up to show that this something represents something good. So איז נישט מובן, it's not understood, what's the קשיא on רש״י? Number one, דווקא דעם דריטן טעם אין מדרש שנסתמו מהם כל הצרות וכולי, דווקא this פשט, the third פשט, that all the צרות were taken away, stopped up, ברענגט נישט רש״י. רש״י doesn't even bring that תירץ at all. רש״י also explains why there is no space in between. But he doesn't bring that תירץ at all. Not only, see in מדרש the קשיא is: Why is it the third? It should be the first. In רש״י the קשיא: Why doesn't he bring it בכלל? That's number one. Second thing is: אילו צוויי טעמים פון מדרש וואס רש״י ברענגט יא, the two reasons that רש״י does bring, וואלט ער לכאורה געדארפט שטעלן אפגעקערטן סדר. He should have brought them in an opposite order. לויטן צווייטן טעם איז די סתימה פארבונדן מיט חיי יעקב. The second one is connected to חיי יעקב, that while יעקב was alive, he wanted to tell the sons the קץ and he forgot it, or whatever the פשט is that he couldn't do it. That still has to do with יעקב's life. הגם די סיבה צו יעקב'ס רצון צו מגלה זיין דעם קץ איז געווען דאס וואס איז געווען סמוך לפטירתו, even though the reason he wanted to tell them the קץ is because it was close to his passing, so it's connected to his passing, איז דאס אבער פארגעקומען בחייו. But nevertheless it was when he was alive. So this תירץ, the second reason, still is at a time when יעקב was alive. דער ערשטער טעם, but the first reason, רעדט וועגן א זמן וואס איז נאך די פטירה פון יעקב. The first reason is that when יעקב passed away, the שיעבוד מצרים started. So that's something that has to do later, after the life of יעקב, after he passed away. ובפרט אז דער ענין later איז דאך מער הארב ווי לויטן צווייטן טעם. So first of all, it comes first, that's what happened. The The second thing came first, that יעקב wanted to tell them the קץ, so that should have been first, and then should be something that happened later when he passed away. Besides that, in the first one, it's stronger. The first one is a bigger צער, the ענין of the שיעבוד. The second one is not such a big צער. And as we said before, really this should not refer to a צער, it should be a good thing. So at least if he would say the second תירץ first, which is not such a bad thing. But רש״י, what he does is, he tells first the worst thing, then he tells something not so bad, and the third thing, which is the best, which should be the simple פשט, רש״י doesn't say at all. כדי צו פארשטיין, לאמיר זען וואס מפרשים פאראנטווארטן די קשיא מיט צוויי טעמים. So the Rebbe says: To

explain this, let's bring in the מפרשים, something the מפרשים say concerning the two reasons of רש״י. And this is what they say: אויב דער טעם פון סתימת הפרשה איז לפי שכיוון שנפטר יעקב אבינו נסתמו, if we're going to say like רש״י says that why is there a סתימה in the פרשה? Because when יעקב passed away, then there was a סתימה, they stuffed up the eyes of the יידן from צרות, the שיעבוד מצרים started, או דער בעל שביקש לגלות את הקץ לבניו ונסתם, or if he the other פשט that he wanted to tell them the קץ, and it got stuff taken away from him, וואלט די סתימה געדארפט זיין שפעטער אין די פסוקים וואו ס'רעדט זיך וועגן סתימת הקץ אדער וועגן פטירת יעקב. If the סתימה, the fact that there's a space not miss- it didn't no space no separation, is because of one of these two reasons or both reasons, why is it here? Why is it put in the beginning of ויחי? It should have been later when it talks about יעקב passing away passing away, because both תירוצים have to do with his passing. The second one that he wanted to tell the קץ and he forgot is because before he passed away he wanted to, so it's close to his passing. The one that the שיעבוד started after he passed away is ממש after he passed away. This is not where the תורה puts it. The תורה puts it by ויחי יעקב where it says that he lived in מצרים. It doesn't speak about his passing. So why is the סתימה, which represents these two things, written here between ויגש and the beginning of ויחי, and not later when it talks about the פטירה of יעקב? That's the קשיא of the מפרשים. און מ'ענטפערט, אז א סתימה אינמיטן סדרה איז נישט קענטיק, דארט קען מען נישט... If it would be in the middle of a סדרה, it wouldn't be you couldn't tell. In the middle of a סדרה sometimes there's less and bigger separation, smaller separation, and it wouldn't be such a big deal and you wouldn't be able to tell. But in the beginning of a פרשה, that's a fact, then it makes it very clear. And he explains: בשעת די סתימה איז אין אנפאנג סדרה, when this סתימה is in the beginning of a

סדרה, וואס א נייע סדרה הייבט זיך אן א באזונדערע ענין, we know that every time there's a new סדרה is באמת a new ענין, דארף דאך זיין א א הפסק, רווח, מער כעל דרך הכלל. So obviously that's where you need the separation, because every סדרה is an ענין for itself, so every סדרה before the סדרה needs a separation. בשעת ס'איז לגמרי ניטא קיין רווח, and when you see that there is no separation, no space at all, ס'איז סתום, it's closed, און די ענינים שטייען דאך אין צוויי באזונדערע סדרות, and the ענינים that it talks about are in two separate סדרות, because after all ויגש is a סדרה for itself, ויחי is a סדרה for itself. So it should have been a real separation. And if it's not there, איז מסתבר לומר, probably it means to say, אז די סתימה ווייזט נישט אויף סתימה פון פרטיות'דיקע פסוקים, ווו עס, ווו די סתימה געפינט זיך, obviously what it's trying to tell you that this whatever the סתימה is trying to tell you, whatever this close, being closed, comes to tell you, is not נוגע to these specific פסוקים, but נאר, ס'איז פארבונדן מיט כללות תוכן הסדרה, it has to do with the סדרה as a whole, דערפאר ווערט עס נרמז בתור הקדמה to the ענין הסדרה וכדלהלן. In other words, sometimes if something special happens in the middle of a פרשה, so it has to do with that פסוק, with something else. But if something has to do between two סדרות, and we know two סדרות are separate ענינים, so obviously it's trying to tell you something not בנוגע a specific פסוק, it's trying to tell you something בנוגע the whole סדרה that this is for. And

since this is the beginning of a whole סדרה of ויחי, so obviously this סתימה has to do with the whole סדרה. It doesn't have to do with ויחי יעקב, doesn't have to do with יעקב living, it has to do with the תוכן of the whole סדרה, וכדלהלן as the רבי will explain what this tells you about the whole סדרה. So what the רבי is trying to say, that when the מפרשים say, we quoted before, that really it should have been written, the סתימה should have been later, but it's here in order to be able to tell, because if it would be written in the middle of a פרשה, middle of a סדרה, you wouldn't be able to tell that, so the רבי explains it doesn't mean just not that just סתם that you wouldn't be able to tell that so much that there is something different here. It tells you something special, that the difference that's happening here, and that's why there's a סתימה, has to do with the whole סדרה. That's why it's done before a סדרה. So now let's see, what is the סדרה of ויחי talking about? Not the last these פסוקים, the whole סדרה, and when we figure out what the whole סדרה is talking about, we'll see what the סתימה is trying to tell us, and we'll answer the קשיות. און די עיקר אז דער עיקר תוכן פון דער סדרה ויחי איז וועגן מאורעות וואס זענען נישט בשייכות צום אופן החיים פון יעקב אין ארץ מצרים, since the whole תוכן of the סדר, the whole סדרה, is not really concerning the life of יעקב, how he lived in מצרים, וואס דאס ווערט דערציילט אין פרשת ויגש, this is in פרשת ויגש told, אז יעקב ובניו זענען געווען אין מיטב הארץ, בביסוס, ויפרו וירבו מאד, it says they were in the best of the land, and they multiplied there. All the life of השבטים and יעקב in מצרים is told in ויגש. Here, in ויחי, what's the main point of the whole סדרה of ויחי? דער עיקר מאורעות וואס זענען פארבונדן צו זיין פטירה, happenings that are connected to his passing, ביז צו זיין פטירה בפועל, when he actually passed away, as written in the פרשה. And the

רבי says, where do we see it in the פרשה? Everything is connected to the פטירה. First of all, in the beginning of the סדרה, it says ויקרבו ימי ישראל למות, אין אנהויב פרשה, beginning it says that the days got close to his death. און דער המשך הענינים, יעקב גיט די ברכות צו יוסף און זיינע קינדער, then it says יעקב gave a ברכה to יוסף and his children, און דערנאך א ברכה לבניו, when he gave the ברכה just to his children. These are all ענינים וואס זענען שייך צום זמן שקודם הפטירה, these are all things that have to do because it was close to and before he died. So even the beginning of the פרשה, before he died, it's all ענינים in connection to his פטירה. ובפרט אז בתחלת הסדרה ממש, especially in the beginning of this סדרה, אין דעם ערשטן פסוק, the first פסוק, ווערט געבראכט דער סך הכל פון כל שני חיי יעקב, the first פסוק says what how old he was in his end of his life. So the first פסוק talks ממש about the end of his life. So this is the תוכן of the סדרה, איז דערפון פארשטאנדיק, from that we understand, אז מיט דער פרשה סתומה, the fact that the תורה writes a פרשה סתומה, doesn't have that space in between in the beginning of the סדרה, and we said before that means that it has to do with something of the whole סדרה, not of the words ויחי יעקב, but the whole סדרה, מיינט די תורה אנצודיטן, the תורה means to stress, א סתימה א סתימה בקשר צו דעם תוכן פון דער גאנצער פרשה, פטירת יעקב, the תורה is trying to tell you something concerning the passing of יעקב. So the סתימה that's there in the beginning has to do something with the פרשה, with the סדרה, and this whole סדרה is the פטירה of יעקב. Okay. און דאמיט ווערן פארענטפערט ביידע אויבנדערמאנטע קשיות. This

will answer the both questions asked in the beginning. וואס רש\"י איז משמיט דעם דריטן טעם, first of all why רש\"י skips בכלל the third reason, that why the תורה has a סתימה is to tell you that he was finished with all the צרות, און דער סדר פון די צוויי געבראכטע טעמים, and the second question, why does רש\"י bring the order of the other טעמים in the order of first he brings that the צרות, but the עבדות started when יעקב died, and the second one, that he forgot the קץ? Now we'll understand why, why. ווייל די סתימה איז פארבונדן מיט פטירת יעקב, since we just finished saying that this סתימה has to do with the סדרה as a whole, which is the פטירה of יעקב, און מיט די פאסירן, getting the שייכות with the פטירה, and all the things that happened in connection to the פטירה. און ממילא, in פשוטו של מקרא, קען גאר ניט, so a simple פשט, there's no place to say אז די סתימה פון דער סדרה, וואס האט צו טאן מיט פטירת יעקב, זאל רמז זיין אז נסתמו הימנו כל צרות. So it doesn't make sense to say when we're talking that the תורה wants to teach something that has to do with his passing, that that should mean, to tell us that all the צרות went away from him. Why? סיי אין זמן, first of all, in time, שנשתמו הימנו, this that all the צרות went away, איז געווען באלד ביים קומען אין מצרים. That happened right away when he came to מצרים, 17 יאר פאר דער פטירה, 17 years before he passed away! So the תורה is trying to tell us something about his פטירה and in connection to his פטירה, why would the תורה hint to something that started 17 years earlier? That's because the זמן. סיי אין תוכן, סיי in the contents, דער ענין פון נסתמו ממנו כל צרות שבעולם, this idea that all the צרות was taken away from him, were closed up from him, וואס איז תכלית החיים, that shows how the life was special, איז אין קעגנזאץ צו ענין הפטירה פון יעקב. That's in contradiction to יעקב's death! The fact that we're saying he lived a very, very good life, that he had no צרות, that has to do with his life! And if the תורה is talking about the פטירה, and the סתימה is there to give you some to tell you something about his פטירה, it wouldn't be telling you something about how good his life was, because it's the beginning of the פרשה, it's נוגע to the whole סדרה, to the whole פרשה, so it can't be that it's telling you something about his life, סיי מצד the time, cuz this was started years, 17 years before, and סיי מצד the תוכן, it doesn't fit that when we want to tell you something about his פטירה, we'll tell you how good he lived. פאר דאס, איז רש״י אין גאנצן משמיט דעם דריטן טעם. That's why רש״י skips that reason, because in פשוטו של מקרא, that reason doesn't fit. קומט אויך אזוי קיין קשיא נישט, וואס ביקש לגלות שטעלט רש״י אלס צווייטן טעם. Now, there's also no question why the fact that he wanted to reveal the קץ and נסתם ממנו, it got stuffed from him, it got taken away from him, רש״י writes as a second reason. ווייל אין שייכות צו פטירת יעקב, איז דער טעם שנשתעבדו, נענטער צו פשוטו של מקרא, because the first reason that he gives, that when יעקב אבינו passed away, the צרות bei the אידן started, is closer to the פשט, since we're talking about the פטירה of יעקב, so that's closer to the פטירה. While the other reason, that he forgot if he had wanted to tell him the קץ and he and he didn't make it, that is not part of the פטירה! That didn't bring, it didn't come because of the פטירה! The reason he wanted to tell them was because he was going to pass away, but the fact that he forgot it, which is the hint of the fact that there's a סתימה in the פסוקים, in the in the ספר תורה, that is נוגע that he forgot the קץ! The forgetting the קץ is not a cause because of the פטירה! So it's in time of the פטירה, but it's not connected directly to the פטירה. So which one is more פשוטו של מקרא, that's connected to the פטירה? That the צרות of the אידן started because of his פטירה! So if the תורה wants to tell us something about the פטירה, the תורה means to say that the פטירה caused the שעבוד. The second thing is also close to the פטירה, so רש״י also brings it, but that's not as close to פשוטו של מקרא as the first פשט. While the third פשט in the מדרש doesn't fit here at all, because that has nothing to do with the פטירה, that has to the opposite, it has to do with his living in מצרים 17 years good. Why does טאקע this סדרה start with ויחי יעקב, וויבאלד די גאנצע סדרה רעדט זיך וועגן די פטירה פון יעקב, און די פאסירן אין שייכות מיט

איר? The whole סדרה is talking about יעקב's death, יעקב's passing, and all the things in connection to his passing. So why does טאקע this סדרה start with ויחי יעקב? הן אמת אז דער סך הכל פון שני חיי יעקב קומט אין פארבינדונג מיט זיין פטירה. True, that when the תורה wants to tell us how old how how many years he lived, when do you say that? When we talk about his פטירה. So then we tell you, how old was he when he was passing away? ווי געזאגט פריער. So לכאורה, maybe that's why the פרשה, the סדרה that talks about the פטירה starts ויחי יעקב. But the רבי says, no. דער תירוץ פאסט אבער בלויז אויף די שייכות פון צווייטן האלבע פסוק. The second half פסוק טאקע fits. פסוק says ויהיו ימי יעקב, the days of יעקב were 147, that טאקע fits. When we talk about the פטירה, you tell us he was 147 years old when he passed away. אבער דער ערשטער האלבער פסוק, but the first half of the פסוק, ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה, that יעקב lived in מצרים 17 years, וואס ווערט דערציילט וועגן יעקב'ס בעסטע יארן, what talks about the best years of his life, וואס פאר א קיצור האט דאס מיט מיתת יעקב? What's the connection to that with the death of יעקב? With the פטירה of יעקב? And since we said the whole פרשה is the פטירה, so the words ויחי יעקב don't belong here. לפי זה, האט גאר די חלוקה פון די סדרים געדארפט זיין differently. That according to this, that the whole סדר is talking about the פטירה, the way the סדרים are divided should have been differently. Should have been like this: ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה, דאס האט געדארפט זיין דער סיום פון פרשת ויגש. This פסוק, the not the first part of the פסוק, that יעקב lived in מצרים 17 years, which means he lived good years in מצרים, that should have been part of the part of the end of ויגש. That should be the end of ויגש, וואס ווערט דערציילט ותחי רוח יעקב אביהם. In ויגש it talks about יעקב was revived and he became happy and וישב ישראל, and it says that the יידן lived in גושן in the good land, ויפרו וירבו מאד, and they multiplied. ויהיו ימי יעקב, and then so that should be so that's like ויגש. So in the end of ויגש it should have said ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה. When it talks about how good it was in מצרים and how they lived in מצרים, that's where ויחי יעקב belongs. Now the second half, ויהיו ימי יעקב, יעקב lived for 147 years, that should be the beginning, די התחלה פון פרשת ויחי. ויהיו ימי יעקב should be the beginning of ויחי, cuz ויחי talks about his פטירה, that's how it will start, that יעקב was by the פטירה 147 years, and then the תורה would go on, everything that happened surrounding his פטירה. That's how it should be. That's one קשיא. נאר דארף מען פארשטיין, we also have to understand, ווי גערעדט שוין איינמאל, דער רבי זאגט, as I said many times, אז דער נאמען פון א סדרה האט א פארבינדונג מיט דעם תוכן פון דער גאנצער סדרה. A name of a סדרה has a connection to the תוכן, the context of the whole סדרה. And that's the Rebbe's חידוש, that even though people think that the name of a סדרה is based on because it's one of the few first few words of the סדרה, which is connected, which is true, but it's not only that. The name, the word that is the name tells us the whole תוכן of the סדרה. And טאקע in every סדרה we have to look into it to see how it fits. According to that, היינו ווי אזוי ווערט די סדרה אנגערופן מיט'ן נאמען ויחי? So how is the סדרה called ויחי, אין דער צייט וואס דער אינהאלט פון דער סדרה איז פטירת יעקב, when the whole context, the whole meaning, the whole תוכן of the סדרה is how יעקב passed away, היפך פון דעם ענין פון ויחי, the opposite of ויחי? So why? So two קשיות:

why does it start with ויחי when it talks about the פטירה, and why is the name of the סדרה ויחי, which is talking about the פטירה, when ויחי means he lived, not that he passed away? So the Rebbe says, דער ביאור אין דעם, the explanation is like this: אמיתת ענין החיים איז אזא חיים וואס איז אלעמאל חי. When we say something is alive, when is it really alive? If it's always alive, eternally, forever. האט א קיום נצחי אן שינוים. It's forever, it exists forever, eternally, without any changes. דער פאקט איז, די אמת'ע מציאות פון חיים פאראן נאר ביים אויבערשטן. That's why the real, real חי, what's really called alive, only השם, which is the מקור החיים, the source of all life. He's the real life. שטייט, there's a פסוק that says, וה' אלקים אמת הוא אלקים חיים. ה' אלקים, the אויבערשטער is true, and the אויבערשטער is life, which means, וואס אמת איז אזא זאך וואס ווערט נישט נפסק, נישט נשתנה. אמת is something that doesn't stop. If it's really אמת it can't change, and it never changes, and never stops. Just to use a simple example, 1 + 1 = 2 is true. That will never change. And you can't say in one place it's 2, in one place it's 4, or next year it'll be 2. If it's אמת it's true. Something that doesn't get stopped and doesn't change. אויב אבער אין דעם איז דא א הפסק, ווערט עס אנגערופן כוזב. If something is alive, but it stops, that's not called אמת, that's called a lie, כוזב. און דערפאר געפינט מען, that's what we find הלכה, אז טייכן וואס ווערן אויסגעטריקנט איינמאל אין זיבן יאר, there are certain rivers that dry up once in seven years. ווערן זיי אנגערופן, they're called in the משנה, נהרות המכזבים, rivers who lie. איז דאס פסול לקידוש מי חטאת. When you have to use water together with the פרה אדומה, and then use it to sprinkle, it has to be, the פסוק says, וואס עס דארף זיין דוקא מים חיים. The פסוק says has to be live water. And these waters, even though now they're working good and they're fine, but if we know that they're going to stop eventually, it's not called חיים. So because really חיים is life means if it's eternal. און דערפאר זאגן חז"ל, חותמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא אמת, that's what חז"ל say, the seal of השם is אמת. Why אמת? Cuz the Rebbe's going to explain, אמת and חיים go together. Life is the אויבערשטער has a real life, and that's a real אמת. ווארעם אמת איז צונויפגעשטעלט פון דריי אותיות. אמת is made up of three letters: א, which is דער ערשטער אות פון אלף בית, first letter of אלף בית, מ, דער מיטלסטער אות, the middle אות, ת, דער לעצטער אות, the the last one, which means from beginning through the middle to the end, all the way, וואס באווייזט אז עס אן קיין שינויים, it shows there is no change, it's the same from beginning to end. איז כותב, like it says by the אויבערשטער: אני ראשון ואני אחרון ומבלעדי אין אלקים, I'm first, I'm last, and besides Me there is nothing, which means in between. דער אויבערשטער is the מציאות from beginning to end. So דער אויבערשטער is the real אמת. And that means that דער אויבערשטער is the real חיים. און דאס מיינט דער פסוק, when the פסוק says, וה' אלקים אמת הוא אלקים חיים. So the פסוק says, because דער אויבערשטער is אמת, די באלד מהותו יתברך is אמת, since the מהות of דער אויבערשטער is true, which means He is eternal, וואס קיינמאל נישט נפסק ומשתנה חס ושלום, it never stops and never changes, is הוא אלקים חיים, that's why we say He's the one that's alive. איז ער יתברך די אמת'ע מציאות והחיים, He's the real life. So דער אויבערשטער is only the real life, because the real life means that it's living forever. If it's going to stop eventually, that while it's there it's not really alive. Potentially it's going to stop, so it's not really a real, real strong מציאות. So the only one that's really alive is דער אויבערשטער. מה שאין כן נבראים, but all the creatures, די באלד זיי זענען נישט קיין אמת'ע מציאות מצד עצמם, all creatures, all creation is not a real מציאות on their own, זיי זענען נתהוה געווארן און זיי זענען בעצם הווים ונפסדים, they were created at one point, and הוה ונפסד means something that's created and wasn't there always will eventually stop. Some things will take longer, but it'll eventually stop. איז ממילא בזה מצד עצמם איז נישטא קיין אמיתית החיים, since they're not really a being that will be forever, ממילא you can't say they're really alive. סיידן, only dann, when the נברא is דבוק און פארבונדן מיט אלוקות. If the נברא, which is not really alive, is connected godliness, and godliness is חיים, is really alive, then we could consider that נברא also have a שייכות to חיים. ומהאי טעמא werden אידן אנגערופן חיים, for that reason אידן are called alive. Why? צוליב זייער דביקות אין אלוקות, because they're connected to godliness, like the פסוק it says, ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים כולכם היום, you are connected to God, your God, all of you are alive today. אז אויך זיי זענען חי וקיים לעד בקיום נצחי, even they, די אידן נבראים, אידן are נבראים, they're also there with an eternal way because they're connected to דער אויבערשטער eternal. אבער, but, בכדי אז דער אמת'ע חיים, the דביקות באלוקות פון א איד זאל זיך אָנזען אין עולם הזה הגשמי, but in order that this דביקות, this connection that the איד has to the אויבערשטער, which ממילא makes him חיים, makes him really, really alive, but you can't see it. You look at the איד, a person, you don't see the eternity that is there, you don't see that he is בעצם a מציאות that is the real life which is eternal. In עולם הזה הגשמי, this physical world, you don't see it. וואס פארשטעלט אויפן אמת פון ענין אלוקות, the world covers up, conceals the truth of אלוקות. איז עס דוקא דורך דעם, so how do you reveal it? It's only through them, through this, וואס ער גייט דורך די נסיונות און בלבולים, person has tests and has all kinds of turbulence and has all kinds of challenges, און שטערענישן אין זיין דביקות, that he has all kinds of challenges in his connection to השם, און דאך בלייבט ער גאנץ און אומגעענדערט אין קיום התורה ומצוות, and he's complete and not changed concerning keeping the מצוות, דעמאלטס ווערט נתגלה מיט דער פולער קלארקייט, that's when it's very clear and becomes revealed, זיין אמת'ע חיים, the true חיים, וואס זיין דביקות באלוקות קען נישט געענדערט ווערן. When you see he keeps תורה ומצוות even when there are challenges, that means that his connection to השם can never change. Why does it? Because it's connected to השם, and השם is unchangeable, so he is also. So when do you see

that a איד really has within him the חיים of the אויבערשטער, which is eternal, because he's דבוק to the אויבערשטער? When there are challenges to stop it and nevertheless he doesn't care and he passed the tests. ועל פי דעם איז פארשטענדיק די שייכות פון ויחי יעקב צו דער כללות הסדרה, from this we understand the connection between ויחי יעקב to the whole סדרה, וואס עיקר ענין איז פטירת יעקב, the main thing is about the פטירה of יעקב, which we ask the question, so why does the סדרה start with ויחי יעקב? Why is that called ויחי? און בעיקר דער טעם וואס די גאנצע סדרה רופט זיך ויחי, why it's called, now we'll understand. במשך די אלע פריערדיקע יארן, concerning all the previous years, האט מען נישט געזען זיכער זיינע יארן פון אמת'ע ויחי, all the years of יעקב, really you couldn't see, is this a real ויחי? פון ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים, is this a דביקות that represents the true connection to השם that is the real life? ובפרט אזא דביקות אין חיים וואס איז בהסכם צו דרגת האבות שהם הם המרכבה, especially a type of life that fits to the level of the מרכבה of the אבות, which are מרכבה, which are בטל to השם. So all these years before you really couldn't know for sure, wasn't so בגלוי, wasn't so revealed the fact that he is דבוק and has this eternity within him. Why? ווייל דער

כלל פון אל תאמין בעצמך עד יום מותך, because this rule that the גמרא says, "Don't believe in yourself till the day you die." In other words, you could never know that you'll remain a צדיק till the day you die, וואס איז געזאגט געווארן אויך שייך צו צדיקים, it's said by צדיקים also. So, as long as he's still alive, and there's still another day to live and more time to live, you don't know what's going to happen. So it's not so sure that this is going to be forever. ובפרט אז יעקב אבינו האט דאך מפורש חושש געווען שמא יגרום החטא, יעקב actually, when he was afraid of עשו, said to the אויבערשטער, "הגם you promised me you'll protect me, but maybe I sinned." So he really thought to himself maybe he sinned. So, in theory, there's a possibility he might still sin. דערפאר איז זיין מדרגה פון דביקות במשך פון אלע יארן אויך אין ארץ ישראל, therefore, when he was דבוק to השם, טאקע even the years in ארץ ישראל, און דאס דורכגיין אזוי פיל צרות און יסורים, and he did pass many צרות, many problems and many sufferings, נאך אלץ נישט געווען קיין גענוגנדיקע באווייז אז ער איז אן אמת'ער ויחי, still was not enough proof for the real, real ויחי. Because who knows what's going to be later? און אפילו אויך נישט דאס וואס ער האט געזען אז זיינע קינדער ובני בנים זענען צדיקים, even the fact that he saw his children and grandchildren are צדיקים, still no proof, וויבאלד זיי האבן זיך געפונען אין ארץ ישראל, they were in ארץ ישראל. So there they were צדיקים. און מ'קען נישט וויסן ווי אזוי זייער מצב קען זיין אין א פארגרעבטע לאנד, you don't know how they're going to be in a coarse land, a bad land like מצרים, you don't know. So on יעקב you don't know what's going to happen. As much as till then everything was fine and he overcame all challenges, his children also. בשעת עס איז אבער יעקב דערגרייכט דער זמן פון סמוך

לפטירתו, but when it came to the time close to his passing, ובפרט אז אינצווישן איז געווען דער קומען אין מצרים, especially that in between he came to מצרים, און איבערצייגן זיך אז אויך וואוינענדיק אין ערות הארץ איז ער בשלימות הכי נעלית אין קיום התורה ומצוות, so till it came to the point where while he was in מצרים, to prove that while he is in מצרים, ערות הארץ, which is the lowest land, he's still complete in doing תורה ומצוות, ביז דער לעצטע רגע פון זיין לעבן, till the last moment of his life. So when you got close to this, that's when you're going to see it. As long as there's still more time to live, you don't know what's going to happen, especially when you're in מצרים. But here, being in מצרים and he's already at the end of his life, and he's still the same תכלית השלימות, ובפרט נאך ביי זען דארטן אז מיט אזא שלימות, seeing that his children are complete, אז אלע זיינע קינדער זענען אין א גאנצקייט אין זייער צדקות, all his children are complete in their being צדיקים, און אויך יוסף, נישט קוקנדיק אז ער איז מלך און נשתקע בין הגוים, despite that he was a king and he was captured amongst גוים, איז עומד בצדקתו, he was still a צדיק, ביז אזוי אויך מנשה ואפרים, even מנשה ואפרים, וואס זענען געבוירן געווארן אין מצרים ערות הארץ, מנשה ואפרים which were born in מצרים, in the low land of מצרים, זיינען ראוי לברכה, he saw that they deserve to get a blessing, נאך אזוי פיל אז יידן בכל הדורות וועלן זיך בענטשן מיט זיי, they're so great that all generations, יידן, are going to want to bless their children, they'll bless them, "ישימך אלקים כאפרים וכמנשה." השם should make like אפרים and מנשה, so use them as an example to bless. So you can imagine how יעקב saw that at this point his children are צדיקים, his grandchildren are great, such great people. And this was at the end of his life. דאס ערשט האט מגלה געווען יעקב'ס אמת'ע חיות, this revealed the true life of יעקב, life of יעקב, אזוי אויך אלע זיינע פריערדיקע יארן, and that proved that even the previous years, הגם בחיצוניות פול מיט יסורים ועגמת נפש, superficially full of suffering and עגמת נפש, זענען בפנימיות געווען ויחי יעקב, really they were the real life of יעקב בפנימיות. דערפאר זענען די לעצטע 17 יאר אין מצרים א קלארע באווייז אז כולם

שווים לטובה. That's why being the last 17 years made that all the previous were good. But the question was, how did that make them all good? Maybe יעקב forgot about those bad years because these were such good years, but how did it change the years? But he means not a life, he means a different thing. He means the true life that's connected to the אויבערשטער. So when came to the end and you saw, טאקע, till the end with all the things he still was a צדיק, that proved that all the years before, whatever it was, this was all the real חיות, the real life. And even though he had צרות, but that was the real life because he still stuck to the אויבערשטער with all the צרה, but now you see that this is what it is. און מיט דעם איז מובן וואס די סדרה ווערט אנגערופן "ויחי", this explains why the סדרה is called "ויחי", he lived, הגם אז אין איר רעדט זיך נישט נאר וועגן מאורעות פון יעקב סמוך לפטירתו, even though that the פרשה doesn't only talk about things close to his death, נאר עכט פטירתו פון יעקב, און וועגן דעם זמן נאכדעם, it talks about יעקב'ס passing and it talks about what happened after יעקב. So how could this סדרה called "ויחי", as we said before, when the whole פרשה talks about his death? But not only that, it talks about not only close to his פטירה, it talks about his פטירה ממש and what happened after his פטירה. Now we understand why. די גמרא זאגט, the גמרא says, אז יעקב אבינו לא מת, יעקב אבינו didn't die. מה זרעו בחיים, אף הוא בחיים. Just like if his children are alive, then he's alive. דערפאר שטייט נישט ביי יעקב דער לשון מיתה, that's why it doesn't The meaning of this is, when we say that he really didn't die, he's still alive, that דער אמתער חיים פון יעקב, עס שטייט אין דעם וואס זרעו בחיים. It shows, what's the real life of יעקב? The fact that his children are alive. That's what the גמרא means, לא מת because זרעו בחיים. וואס הייסט, this is what it means. וויבאלד אז דער אמתער ענין פון חיים איז דאס וואס דאס איז ניצחיקייט, קיום לעד. Since we said before, what's the real life? Something that's eternal, something that's forever. על דרך וואס דאס איז כביכול ביי דעם אויבערשטן. Just like by the אויבערשטער, which is the מקור החיים, which is the source of eternal, eternal connection. So, we said before that the real ענין of life is the eternity of the life. איבער דעם זעט זיך אן דער אמתער חיים פון יעקב, וכו'. When do you see the real life of יעקב, and what life, what do we mean, the life of eternity? דוקא ווען מען זעט די נצחיותדיקייט דערפון, when we see the eternity of it. אויך נאכדעם וואס די נשמה גייט אוועק פון גוף. Not only like we said before that the last minute, when he passes away, that moment, and everything was good till the end, you know that this is no nothing's changing. The רבי goes further. It's not only at the moment when he passes away, even what happens after he passes away, after the נשמה leaves the גוף. וואס מיינט אז נישט נאר די חיות איז דבוק, עס בלייבט נצחיותדיקע חיים אין נשמה. Then it shows that not only does the true life, which is the eternity in connection to השם, is there in the נשמה, נאר אויך למטה אין עולם הזה בלייבט דער אמתער חיות פון יעקב. That even after he passed away, in גשמיות, in this world, is the life of יעקב still. זיינע קינדער, it's in his children. אז זיי לעבן דעם אמתער חיים פון יעקב אבינו, they live the true life of יעקב. So, the ויחי goes on the whole סדרה because even the time when he passed away, that's part of ויחי. And even what happened after he passed away, is still part of that time, ויחי, because we just came to conclusion that ויחי doesn't mean physical life, ויחי means a life of נצחיות. מיט דעם איז נאך נאך געשמאקער דער טעם וואס די סדרה ווערט אנגערופן ויחי. And now it's even more געשמאק why the סדרה is called ויחי. דאמיט איז נישט בלויז מותקש אז אויך לאחר פטירת יעקב איז נאך אלץ שייך צו זאגן ויחי יעקב. It doesn't mean only that even after he passed away, you still could call it ויחי, that's how we normally would learn. Since he's a צדיק and after he passed away it's continued, so even, even after he passed away you could still call it ויחי. The רבי says more, דאף, נאך מער, דוקא דעמאלט, דוקא, specifically, especially after he passed away, איז ערשט קענטיק דער אמתער נצחיות פון ויחי יעקב. That's when we know ויחי יעקב. So, when is the ויחי יעקב come to a revelation, to see it? After he passed away. So, obviously, the ויחי יעקב is no contradiction to his passing, which was the main קשיא, one of the main קשיות in the שיחה, because the רוחניותדיקע thing טאקע happens after his פטירה. We said before that the סתימת הפרשה, the fact that the פרשה is stuffed up, is closed up, has to do not with the words דוקא ויחי יעקב, but with the beginning of the סדרה, וואס איר תוכן איז פטירת יעקב און די ענינים וואס זענען שייך צו דעם, means it's connected to the whole סדרה, which talks about the death, the passing of יעקב and all the things in connection. איז רש''י משמיט דעם דריטן טעם פון מדרש, רש''י skips the third reason of the מדרש, שנסתמו כל צרות שבעולם, that all the צרות stopped from him, און ברענגט בלויז די צוויי טעמים, he only brings the other two reasons, שנפטר יעקב, when he passed away, that's when the שעבוד started, ושביקש לגלות את הקץ ונעלם הימנו, he wanted to tell them the קץ and it got stuffed up, וכולם השייכות מיט פטירת יעקב, that have a שייכות to his פטירה. So, the רבי says that's what he said before, and the רבי is repeating, I said before, because the סתימה between the two סדרות has to do with the ויחי יעקב, with the with the whole סדרה ויחי יעקב, and the סדרה talks about the פטירה, that's why the first two reasons are there, because they have to do with the פטירה of יעקב. The third reason, which is that all the צרות went away from him, that's not part, has to do with the פטירה. So, that's what he said before. אבער על פי הנ''ל, איז דאס אויך מאסל בפנימיות. And based the whole thing of what we said till now, this פשט that the רבי said before על פשוטו של מקרא, in simple פשט, simple פשט the רבי said that we understand that the סתימה here must have to do with the סדרה, not with the words. That's פשוטו של מקרא, and therefore the third פשט doesn't fit to the whole פרשה which the whole סדרה, which is about the פטירה. Now the רבי says, I'll show based on what we said before, that it also fits to what it says in חסידות. ווען דאס וואס דוקא די סדרה פון פטירת יעקב ווערט אנגערופן ויחי, with the fact like we said now, that דוקא the not only even after his פטירה it's still called ויחי, דוקא his פטירה showed ויחי, as we said before, that's the פנימיות, that fits to פשט also. ווייל דוקא דורך, because דוקא through, דורך די צוויי פירושים, דוקא through these two פשטים, ווערט ארויסגעבראכט און אונטערגעשטראכן, brings out and stresses אז דער אמיתת החיים איז נמשך געווארן אויך בבניו, דווקא these two things show that where is his real חיות, even after he passed away, in his children, אז ער לעב- אמת'ע לעבן בגלות איז געווען דער ענין פון קיום התורה ומצוות, זכות אבות. These two פירושים show how the children, their main thing, their main life, the גילוי is connected to השם. As we said before, the פנימיות'דיקע ענין is here, that the real life is חיים נצחיים. And these two פירושים, the רבי will show have to do with this נקודה, that after he passed away, then you have the real חיים. Why? דאס וואס יידן לערנען תורה און זיינען מקיים מצוות אין א צייט וואס נישטא קיין שיעבוד גלות, the fact that יידן learn תורה and do מצוות when there is no hardships of גלות, is not such a special thing, noch meer, even when יידן do תורה and מצוות while they're in גלות, אבל דער מצב פון גלות איז אזא אז מען פיהלט בגלוי דעם קץ פון די גאולה, when the מצב of the גלות is, it's תקע in גלות, but you feel the קץ, you feel the coming of the גאולה, you feel the the end, basically you know the גאולה, מען ווייסט בהשגה דעם קץ פון אויס גלות, we know, at least in your mind you know that there is a קץ and you know when the קץ is, what's the קץ? The קץ means at end, אויס גלות, when there is no more גלות. דער אויסלייז- דעם אויסגעלייזט ווערן און ארויס פון גלות, the קץ means they know that they will be redeemed and they will go out of גלות. So, if you are in גלות, so first the רבי said if you're in גלות, if you keep, if you're not in גלות keep מצוות, there's no such a big thing. If you're in גלות and you keep מצוות, but as long as you know the קץ it makes it much easier, אייכען דעם זאגט זיך נאך ניט ארויס די שלימות'דיקע ויחי פון יידן, it doesn't really show the real complete ויחי that they lived in a form of נצחיות. בשעת אבער ווען דער שיעבוד צרות הגלות איז אזוי גרויס, עד כדי כך אז מען זעהט גארניט ווי אזוי מען קען פון דעם ארויס אויסגעלייזט ווערן, but if the גלות is so strong that you don't even know how you're going to get out of it, you have no קץ, that's he טייטש'ט סתימת הקץ, he טייטש'ט here interesting words סתימת ה- if there would be the גילוי הקץ, it would give to יידן a certain push, give them a certain way of כח, a special thing, that they were able to do תורה ומצוות, but when there is סתימת הקץ, you don't even have that. Here it's revealed that תורה ומצוות is the real חיות of יידן. פון דעם איז פארשטענדיק That we understand, אז דווקא דורך דעם דריקט זיך אויס דער אמת'ע חיות פון יעקב. We said we we said before that the real חיות of יעקב is this רוחניות'דיקע חיות נצחי. So, when do we see it? When it after him, it goes through his children. And in the children גופא, if they keep תורה ומצוות in the time of גלות, and the time when there is no קץ, because they don't see the קץ, they don't see the light, that expresses the true life of יעקב. מה הוא בחיים, it's his life, not only the יידן's life, it's his life, דורך דעם וואס זרעו בחיים, through the children בחיים, that's ויחי יעקב. So, we see how the fact that נסתם הקץ is part of the reason of ויחי יעקב, because when is the real ויחי יעקב? When נסתם הקץ, when the קץ is not revealed. דערמיט ווערט נאך בעסער פארשטאנדיק, this explains even more, וואס רש"י ברענגט בלויז די ערשטע צוויי טעמים, און ניט דעם טעם פון נסתמו ממנו כל צרות שבעולם. This gives a different a better פשט why רש"י brings only the two פשט'ים and not the third one, that all the צרות were taken away from him. ווארום דער קיום התורה ומצוות בזמן פון סורו ממנו כל הצרות, the fact that יידן do תורה ומצוות when there is no צרות, איז נאך ניט קיין ראי', איז נאך קיין ראי' ניט אז דאס איז א חיות בלי שינויים, it doesn't show that it's a life without a change, because, of course, there is no צרות, so you do תורה ומצוות. דער אמת'ע ויחי ווערט מגולה אין דער עבודה אין זמן פון צרות, השיעבוד און סתימת הקץ, when do you see the real עבודה? If there is שיעבוד, and there is צרות, צרות השיעבוד, and we don't see the light, there's no you don't know the קץ, and, nevertheless, you do תורה ומצוות. דעמאלט ווען דער ויחי פון תורה ומצוות טוט זיך אייך אויף בזמן פון גלות און שיעבוד, If the ענין of תורה ומצוות which is the ויחי is accomplished in a time when there is גלות and שיעבוד, ווערט מגולה די כוונה פנימיות און דער תכלית פון דעם גלות און צרות השיעבוד. That brings out, what is the purpose of the whole שיעבוד, of the whole גלות. אז דווקא דורך דעם קומט מען צו צום גילוי פון דער גאולה בתכלית השלימות. This brings to the גאולה. The גאולה is going to bring you to the the revelation of the חיות, of the דביקות of the אייבערשטער. When do you show your דביקות of the אייבערשטער? When there is a צרה, there's a שיעבוד, and there's no קץ, you don't see the קץ, and, nevertheless, you do תורה ומצוות. So, what happens if That brings out the true חיות that you have, a חיות נצחי which is דבוק to the אויבערשטער. That brings the real גאולה when this will be נתגלה, when this will be revealed. איז דאך פארשטאנדיק די פנימיותדיקע טעם פאר וואס עס איז סתימת הקץ. This explains also the deeper reason why טאקע the קץ was closed up from him. The אויבערשטער made it so that he shouldn't tell them the קץ. Why? וואלט דער קץ נתגלה געווארן, had the קץ been revealed, וואלט עפעס געפעלט אין דעם ענין פון תוקף הגלות, ממילא the גלות wouldn't be so bad. As long as they knew the קץ, we said before, that makes it lighter, even though the גלות is bad, but if you notice you see the light ahead, it makes it easier. And if it makes it easier, the גלות is not so strong. ממילא היכן די שלימות הגאולה וואס קומט דורך גלות? Since the שלימות, wasn't purpose of the גלות to come to the גאולה? And when do you really have the real גאולה? When the גלות is very strong and nevertheless you do it. So had the קץ been נתגלה, the גלות wouldn't be so strong. If the גלות is not so strong, then the גאולה will not be really so strong, that wouldn't really reveal the real חיות. So that's why the אויבערשטער made that it should be סתימת הקץ. ממילא now there's סתימת הקץ, now the גלות is strong, and now this will show the real חיות of the יידן, the חיות of יעקב אבינו. אזוי קען איך מסביר זיין וואס רש״י זאגט שביקש לגלות את הקץ לבניו ונסתם ממנו. This also explains the לשון of רש״י: he wanted to reveal the קץ, and to his children, ונסתם ממנו, it got stopped up, taken away from him. לכאורה, רש״י קומט דאך מסביר זיין דעם טעם פאר דעם וואס פרשה זו סתומה. רש״י is coming to answer why this פרשה is סתומה, is closed up. וואלט גענוג ער זאל זאגן אז נסתם ממנו הקץ. To answer that question, why there's no space in between, why it's סתומה, רש״י could have answered it with two words, three words: why? נסתם ממנו הקץ. The קץ was taken away from him. וואס איז דען נוגע צו דערציילן אז ביקש לגלות את הקץ, that he wanted to tell the קץ, and the אויבערשטער made he shouldn't do it? What's it נוגע that he wanted? To answer the קשיא why there's a סתימה, that would be enough with these words. But now we understand that the ענין, in them is מרומז this as a hint, אז אדרבה, contrary, דוקא דורך נסתם ממנו האט זיך אויסגעפירט זיין בקשה לגלות את הקץ לבניו. It made it a גוטע פשט that יעקב wanted to tell the קץ, which means reveal the קץ. When is the real revelation of the קץ? When they don't know the קץ. If they don't know the קץ, ממילא the גלות is harder, and they would nevertheless work, then this brings the real קץ. די סתימת הקץ איז נישט קיין העלם צוליב העלם, חס ושלום. The fact that the קץ is forgotten is not just because the אויבערשטער wanted to cover it up, they shouldn't know

it, נאר די תכלית איז בכדי אז דורך איר זאל שפעטער ארויסקומען דער גילוי הקץ גענוי. The גילוי הקץ means the revelation of what the קץ is really. So when יעקב wanted to be מגלה the קץ, it happened through סתימת הקץ. To be מגלה the קץ doesn't only mean to tell them. פשוט פשט means you wanted to tell them when משיח will come. It's not that. It means you wanted to be מגלה the ענין of the קץ, bring the קץ. The only way could he bring the real קץ, which is the real נצחי, is דוקא when you do not know when the קץ is, so that you don't see the light and nevertheless you do it. דאס מיינט ביקש לגלות את הקץ לבניו ונסתם ממנו. This, what it means: he wanted to reveal the קץ from his children and it got stopped up from him. בשעת יעקב האט געוואלט ממשיך זיין און מגלה זיין לבניו די גאולה, when he wanted to bring, reveal the גאולה to them, איז בכדי אז בניו זאלן דאס האבן בשלימות, so his children should have the גאולה complete, איז געווען סתימת הקץ. That's why it had to be covered up. דאס איז געווען די הכנה, this was the preparation, אז דערנאך זאלן זיין, זאלן זיי מקבל זיין דאס וואס יעקב ביקש לגלות, that they should be able to be מגלה the, that is, this gave the כח that the גלות should be harder, ממילא the גאולה will be a greater one, so the גילוי הקץ will be a stronger one. פארשטייט איר?

So the יידן will be able to be מקבל די גילויים פון די גאולה העתידה, the גילויים from future גאולה.
