Likkutei Sichos, Vol. 3: Yud Shevat (Part 3)
From the Baal Shem Tov's hidden stories to the Frierdiker Rebbe's translated maamarim -- tracing how Chassidus was gradually opened to every Jew, and the Rambam's blueprint for the geulah.
Part of Likkutei Sichos: Volume 3 - Yud Shevat · 27:08
Closing the Yud Shevat trilogy, this shiur contrasts the Baal Shem Tov's method of concealing deep secrets inside simple stories with the Maggid's practice of teaching Chassidus openly but only to his greatest scholars -- among them the Alter Rebbe, the sole talmid able to absorb the Maggid's Torah from start to finish, and der Valfer, whose spiritual decline the Maggid had cryptically foreseen. It traces how the Alter Rebbe's innovation of dressing Chassidus in sechel gradually widened its circle until the Frierdiker Rebbe insisted on teaching Chassidus, translated if necessary, to Chassidim and non-Chassidim alike wherever he traveled. The shiur closes by quoting the Rambam's Hilchos Melachim on the precise sequence of the geulah as the culmination of the process the Baal Shem Tov began.

As a hachana to 讬讜状讚 砖讘讟. But stam azoy is not. We're holding page 874, The Rebbe explained the three roshei teivot in the word 讘专讗砖, 讘专讗砖 讙诇讬, which is the the Targum of 讬讚 专诪讛, talks about Yetzias Mitzrayim, and the three people who are 诪专讜诪讝 in the word 讘专讗砖 is the Rashbi, the Arizal, and the Baal Shem Tov, because they are connected to the geulah, which is like Yetzias Mitzrayim. Then the Rebbe added that the Frierdiker Rebbe's name is also hinted in the word 讘专讗砖, because he is also 砖讬讬讻讜转 to the geulah. Then the Rebbe explained the connection between this and Targum, why the hint is 讚讜讜拽讗 in Targum, not in the 驻住讜拽. Because Targum is exactly the same thing as the geulah. The geulah is to transform 拽诇讬驻讛 into 拽讚讜砖讛, and Targum is also taking Targum, which is a different language, and bringing 拽讚讜砖讛 into it by using it for Torah. Okay. So here we're holding 讗讝讜讬: 讜讜讬 讚注专诪讗谞讟 驻专讬注专, as he mentioned before the Rebbe says, is the 讛转讞诇讛 驻讜谉 诪讙诇讛 讝讬讬谉 讞住讬讚讜转 爪讜 讗诇注诪注谉 讗谉 拽讬讬谉 讛讙讘诇讜转, the beginning, who started spreading Chassidus to everybody without any limitations, 讛讗讟 讝讬讱 讗谞讙注讛讜讬讘谉 驻讜谉 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘, started with the Baal Shem Tov. Okay, 讬讚讜注, it's known, 讗讝 讚注专 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 讗讬讝 讙注讙讗谞讙注谉 诪注讬专 诇注讬专 讜诪讻驻专 诇讻驻专, the Baal Shem Tov used to go from city to city, from village to village, 讗讜谉 讙注专注讚讟 注谞讬谞讬诐 驻讜谉 转讜专转 讛讞住讬讚讜转 讗讜讬讱 爪讜 讗谞砖讬诐 驻砖讜讟讬诐 讘讬讜转专, and he spoke Chassidut even to simple people. This was done before he became 谞讙诇讛, while he was a 爪讚讬拽 谞住转专, but even afterwards also. After he became 谞讙诇讛 as a 爪讚讬拽, he used to go from city to city and speak to people very simple things. He would take the 注谞讬谞讬诐 of Chassidut and bring it down at their level, in 住讬驻讜专讬诐, would tell them stories, 诪注砖讬讜转, 诪砖诇讬诐, which everyone could understand, and from that he brought out a certain vort that would affect their heart, or in 拽讜专爪注 转讜专讛 讜讜注专讟注专 讜讻讚讜诪讛, short 讜讜注专讟诇讗讱. Would give a peshat, a 讟讬讬讟砖 in a vort, and that vort was so powerful that it affected the people. And it was very simple, there was no deep 注谞讬谞讬诐 in Kabbalah or Chassidut. In these simple things were hidden secrets of the Torah, the deepest Sometimes the Baal Shem Tov even spoke to people things which seemed like Told him one guy came, he told a 诪注砖讛 with a horse, a horse came here and this, sounded like stupid things. In that sounding stupid 诪注砖讛 was the deepest 注谞讬谞讬诐 in in Kabbalah and 专讝讬谉 讚专讝讬谉. But for the simple people to understand it, he had to make it most very simple and put it down to their level. That's the Baal Shem Tov. He bichlal didn't travel. It's one of the difference of the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid. The Baal Shem Tov traveled from city to city, a lot of place, he kept on traveling. The Maggid didn't go anywhere. The Maggid stayed in his town, which is the city of Mezritch, and there people came to him. He sent out 转诇诪讬讚讬诐, this, but he never he didn't travel. And his seder was He didn't hide Chassidut in 讜讜注专讟诇讗讱 or in stories. He said outright 讞住讬讚讜转, 谞讬砖讟 讗谞讙注讟讗谉 讗讬谉 诇讘讜砖讬诐 驻讜谉 住讬驻讜专讬诐 讜讻讚讜诪讛, not put into a a cover-up stories. But he said, simple people couldn't understand. He said things that only the 讙讚讜诇讬 讛转诇诪讬讚讬诐 understood were able to understand. And the truth is, between the talmidim, who were the ones that were able to grasp the whole Torah from beginning to end? Only the Alter Rebbe. Even great talmidim, most of them weren't able to listen through from the beginning to end, because it was such deep inyanim and such holy inyanim that it got them so excited. Reb Zusha Anipoler would get excited when he would just hear the Maggid walking in, because everyone could hear him, because he used to walk with crutches, and it made noise. So when he hear him coming, he already would start climbing the walls from hitpa'alut. The Berditchever when he heard the beginning of the Torah would couldn't take it, I mean it was the the the kedushah that was there was so much. The Alter Rebbe was the only one that was able to listen from the beginning to end, and he chazar't over the Torah. Beginning the talmidim thought because he's not so great, so he doesn't he doesn't get the depth of it, and doesn't get the holiness of it, and therefore to him it's like listening to a fine piece of Torah. Later they found out that it's not like that, it's because he's so great that as holy as it is and as great as he is, he's able to absorb it, which they couldn't absorb it. And the story goes there was another talmid who was able to sit from the beginning to end. Who was that? No, was it wasn't Was it was younger? No, he was not that. He was the same type of, yeah, but he was was No, somebody who later on was the only one of the talmidei haMaggid who had a yeridah: der Valfer. Why he's called der Valfer and what his real name is, I think is not even known. He was from the city of Valfe or something, they don't know, but he was a talmid of the Maggid, and he was would sit with the Alter Rebbe and chazar the Torah of the Maggid, because he was the only the only two were able to listen. The The Maggid had said once, In my garden, in one of the apples, let's say, there is a worm forming, and they knew it meant one of the talmidim, but they had no idea who it was. I mean, imagine, all the kedoshim elyon, the greatest, till once the Alter Rebbe was sitting with der Valfer and chazar'ing the Torah. Where did they sit? They had no place to be, so the Alter Rebbe stayed in a house that belonged to a lady, an almana, and the chimney was broken, and it was cold, so they had to put on a fire, and there was no chimney, so the smoke got into the house, so they couldn't even sit, because they couldn't breathe. So smoke rises, so they sat down on the floor. And in the middle of middle of chazar'ing the 转讜专讛, der Valfer said to the Alter Rebbe something like, \"I wish we would have better circumstances and be more comfortable bagashmiyut.\" So the Alter Rebbe said, \"I assume that he is the one that the Maggid meant when he said 讟讜讟 讝讬讱 讗 讜讜讗专注诐.\" Imagine, in the middle of chazar'ing the Rebbe's Torah you should be worried about that it's not so comfortable. And the truth is turned out that he had a 讬专讬讚讛. What exactly happened to him, no one knows too much of it. He went away, he became a 砖讬讻讜专. He did. He wandered from city to city, no one knew what where he is. Once he came in a city, and who was it, 专' Pinchas Reizes? who saw him, and according to the descriptions that he heard assumed, came walking like like a beggar, assumed that he must be the guy, because they heard, people knew that there was a guy, a 转诇诪讬讚 of the 诪讙讬讚, looked like this, had this kind of beard, whatever. So so he saw this guy, he says, \"Maybe this is him.\" He thought maybe it's him. So when he walked away, he tried to open his bag to see, because he thought if he's 讚注专 讜讜讗诇驻注专, maybe he has 讗驻砖专 a 讻转讘, some 讜讜讗专讟 讞住讬讚讜转, a 讻转讘 from the 诪讙讬讚. As he's looking through his bag, he happened to walk back in. He says, \"What are you doing here? What are you You think I'm a 讙谞讘? You're looking if I stole something from you?\" So he said, \"No, I'm looking for a 讻转讘.\" Says, \"A 讻转讘?\" Says, \"That's the difference between our time and your time.\" Time of the Alter Rebbe already. \"You guys already are on a low 诪讚专讙讛. In our time, we had no 讻转讘讬诐, because the Torah of the 专讘讬 and us were one, we didn't have to write it down. You guys need a 讻转讘. Has to be written down. In our times, we didn't have to write it down.\" But 讚注专 讜讜讬讬诇注 he realized that this is like 讚注专 讜讜讗诇驻注专. Later when he came to the Alter Rebbe, he told the Alter Rebbe the story, so the Alter Rebbe said, \"Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you just stop him? You should have brought him to me. I would have taken care of him. I would have uplifted him.\" Anyway, so but otherwise it was just the Alter Rebbe was able to understand. So the 诪讙讬讚 spoke the 讟讬驻住讟注 注谞讬谞讬诐. Sometimes he said things which no one understood. Famous that the 诪讙讬讚 would sit and all of a sudden say something, psh psh, no one understood. And the 诪讙讬讚 said he said it because came into his mind, so at least he should bring it out into the 讗讜讬专 讛注讜诇诐. So later on, maybe someone could figure it out. Uh? No. No.
So anyway, the Baal Shem Tov traveled around and so said over his deep 讟讬驻住讟注 注谞讬谞讬诐, but he put it in very simple things. The 诪讙讬讚 didn't, the 诪讙讬讚 said the highest 注谞讬谞讬诐 in Torah to the great people. It was to put 讞住讬讚讜转 into 砖讻诇, 讗讝 讗讜讬讱 砖讻诇 讛讗谞讜砖讬 讝讗诇 拽注谞注谉 讘讗讙专讬讬驻谉 转讜专转 讛讞住讬讚讜转, even common sense, 驻砖讜讟 砖讻诇 should be able to grasp inyanim of Chassidus. From the Alte Rebbe on, they started learning more Chassidus and more people started understanding, and the circle of Chassidus became bigger. The learning of Chassidus and the behavior of Chassidus. So that happened by the Alte Rebbe. The Rebbe is going through the history here. He said you should translate Chassidus into the language of the country. Did he ever speak Chassidus in English? No. Did he ever speak Chassidus in Hebrew? In English? Hebrew. No, he didn't speak in Hebrew. Why would he speak in Hebrew? I believe he understood English. When you spoke to him he didn't speak English. You see the Rebbe spoke many, many languages. Somebody, there is a letter from the Rebbe, a little girl asked the Rebbe a shaila: is it true that you speak every language in the world? So the Rebbe answered her, unfortunately not. But there are languages that we know he knew. Hebrew, Yiddish, English, French, Russian, German and that was fluent, Spanish, Italian, Italian, Portuguese I don't know, Italian. No, that's not a language. Spoke to some people. Italian he even spoke in public once, not a sicha, but he spoke to somebody, an Italian guy from Italy. The Rebbe so said to him some words in Italian, said something. He spoke in Italian. They even say another story. You see, in the 诪专讻讝, in the Rebbe's office, they only would answer in Yiddish, Hebrew, English. But the Rebbe wrote to people that they could write any language they want. It was once the Rebbe got a letter in Chinese. So the Rebbe asked what's his name to translate to to read the letter for him. Who? Talking about in the in the '50s. Uriel Zimmer. Uriel Zimmer was a real chasidishe guy. He was actually baal teshuvah. He became Neturei Karta. Real 拽谞讗讬 from Neturei Karta, this. And then he became a Lubavitcher. With all the 拽谞讗讜转 that he had against Zionism, he kept it and he became a Lubavitcher, because he saw, he realized that the real 拽谞讗讜转 belongs by the Rebbe is the real 拽谞讗讬 in the proper way. And he worked, what was his job? He used to work in the UN as a translator, cuz there they spoke all kinds of languages. So because he knew many languages, and he knew Chinese. So the Rebbe asked him to read the letter to him, and then the Rebbe told him what to write as an answer. So he wrote the answer, and before sending it away, he gave it to the Rebbe to sign. So when he gave it to the Rebbe, so the story goes, the Rebbe read the letter, it was in Chinese, and the Rebbe fixed a few words someplace in the middle. And then he signed his name. So, I guess he knew Chinese also. This is besides the Rebbe and other, you know, this is pashut he was, knew so many languages, besides other things that he knew. Someone asked the Rebbe does he know, is there is there some truth in 讞讻诪转 讛讻转讘, in being able to read from the handwriting to see So the Rebbe said yes, and I know it also. So if you wrote a letter to the Rebbe, besides the Rebbe seeing, you know, everything 讘专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖, 驻砖讜讟 讘讙砖诪讬讜转, he saw your 讻转讘, he was able to tell who you are, what you are. So it's not only from 谞驻砖 讗诇讜拽讬转, 谞驻砖 讛讘讛诪讬转 also. Anyway, that's why on the Ohel app, type it up with letters. Like you do what? Type the letter up, then you don't have to make any mistakes, handwriting or. Oh. Remember once, Rabbi Chadakov called, it was myself and somebody else he called in, and the Rebbe asked for something, the Rebbe wanted to know if you guys are maskim to do it. And the Rebbe was going to the Ohel that day and he wants, before he goes to the Ohel, he wants to hear from you if you're maskim. So, so the person knew how to type, I didn't know how to type, so he type typed up a letter, and I signed my name, and he hadn't gone to the mikveh that day, so he didn't want to sign his name, so he typed his name. I signed it with my hand, and he typed it. As soon as the Rebbe came back from the Ohel, Rabbi Chodakov calls us in, and shows us the Rebbe's letter, the Rebbe's answer. The Rebbe answered he's fine, but he circled around that other's name typed and he wrote: 讛讗诐 讛讜讗 诪拽讘诇 注诇 注爪诪讜, 讗讜 诪讻讜谞转 讛讻转讬讘讛? Is he accepting it upon himself, or the typewriter? So to type it really didn't, wasn't so good.

And he'll do it like And we see clearly the seder here is, what comes first: building the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 or 拽讬讘讜抓 讙诇讜讬讜转? Says here clear: will build the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 and then he's going to collect all the 讗讬讚谉, which means the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 will be built before the coming of, before, not the come, before the full-fledged geulah. 讗讜谉 讜讜讬 讚注专 谞讘讬讗 讝讗讙讟, 讗讝 讚讬 讗讬爪讟讬拽注 讙讗讜诇讛 讜讜注讟 讝讬讬谉 讻讬诪讬 爪讗转讱 诪讗专抓 诪爪专讬诐, as the navi says the geulah now will be like the same time as went out of 诪爪专讬诐, 讗讜驻谉 驻讜谉 讗专讗谞讜 谞驻诇讗讜转, there will be wonders, 讗 讙讗讜诇讛 讘讬讚 专诪讛, 讜讘专讬砖 讙诇讬, we'll go out of galut with the uplifted hand, 讗讜谉 讘专讬砖 讙诇讬, which means with the inyan of chassidut, with 诪砖讬讞 爪讚拽谞讜 讘拽专讜讘 诪诪砖. Make sure the light in my room is off. If it's not off, turn it off. Where? If my light in my room is not off, shut it off, turn it off. Which one? Which one? Which light? Actually, when my grandmother went to the Rebbe to ask him for a brachah for my uncle's wedding, she spoke to the Rebbe in Hebrew, and the Rebbe answered her back in French. French? Yeah? Did she understand? Yeah, 'cause she's from France, yeah. There are a lot of people that have spoken French. Yeah. Did the Rebbe know she spoke French? No. That's interesting. Non, non. Adam. Adam. Daniel, tell him something. Non, non. Adam.
