Month of Cheshvan: Part 3
Why Shlomo HaMelech's account of the Beit HaMikdash ties Hashem's eternal choice of Yerushalayim directly to His eternal choice of David HaMelech as king.
Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Cheshvan · 16:05
A puzzling shift in Shlomo HaMelech's words at the completion of the first Beit HaMikdash, from Hashem's choice of a city to His choice of David as king, is traced through the Radak and the Zohar to show that the bechirah in Yerushalayim actually depends on the prior bechirah in David. Because Yerushalayim's kedushah is a bechirah netzachit, an eternal choice that a physical place cannot hold on its own, the analysis explains why it needed a vessel for eternity: David HaMelech, whose malchus was promised forever because of his complete bitul to Hashem. That netzchiyus in David is what allows Yerushalayim, as Ir David, to become the one eternal site of the Beit HaMikdash.

Concerning the month of Cheshvan 讘讻诇诇, we find an interesting thing in Tanach in Melachim. There it says that the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 讛专讗砖讜谉, the first 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 built by Shlomo Hamelech, was finished in the month of Cheshvan. It says it was finished 讘讞讚砖 讘讜诇, and it says 讞讜讚砖 讘讜诇 refers first to the 讞讜讚砖 Cheshvan. But nevertheless, 诇驻讜注诇 Hashem said that the dedication of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 should not be done in 讞讜讚砖 Cheshvan, but they should wait till 讬专讞 讛讗讬转谞讬诐, which refers to the month of Tishrei. But it says in Yalkut that the month of Cheshvan felt very bad, why is it that it should lose out? After all, if the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was finished already, so why should Cheshvan lose out not to be the month in which the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 would be dedicated? So therefore Hashem said that the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 讛砖诇讬砖讬 will be dedicated in the month of Cheshvan. So it comes out from here that the month of Cheshvan has a special connection to the inyan of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, say to the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 讛专讗砖讜谉, that it was finished in the month of Cheshvan, and say to the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 讛砖诇讬砖讬, that it will be dedicated in the month of Cheshvan. When the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 讛专讗砖讜谉 was finished, it says in Tanach in 诪诇讻讬诐 讗壮, 拽驻讬讟诇 讞壮, 驻住讜拽 讟状讜 讜讟状讝, that Shlomo Hamelech said, Baruch Hashem etc., thank Hashem, and Hashem spoke 诇讗诪专, saying like this: 诪谉 讛讬讜诐 讗砖专 讛讜爪讗转讬 讗转 注诪讬 讗转 讬砖专讗诇 诪诪爪专讬诐, from the day I took out my nation 讬砖专讗诇 from 诪爪专讬诐, 诇讗 讘讞专转讬 讘注讬专 诪讻诇 砖讘讟讬 讬砖专讗诇, I did not choose any city from all the shevatim of the 讗讬讚谉, 诇讘谞讜转 讘讬转 诇讛讬讜转 砖诪讬 砖诐, to build a house that My name should be there, 讜讗讘讞专 讘讚讜讚 诇讛讬讜转 注诇 注诪讬 讬砖专讗诇, I chose David he should be on my nation 讬砖专讗诇, I chose David to be the king over my nation. So the mefarshim ask that lichorah, he started off with one thing and finished off with something else. He started off by saying that Hashem never chose a city till now in which His name should rest, and he finishes off that He chose David to be on 注诪讬 讬砖专讗诇. So he starts off with the bechirah, with the choice in the city of Yerushalayim, and he finishes off with the choice in David Hamelech to be the king over the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇. So the Radak answers that what he meant to say was that when did Hashem reveal that He chose Yerushalayim as the city in which His name should be in, only after He chose David Hamelech to be the king over 注诪讬 讬砖专讗诇. Which means he was just telling us the time: when did Hashem choose Yerushalayim, only after He chose David Hamelech. But lichorah, this explanation is not enough, because from the peshat of the lashon of the 驻住讜拽, 讜讗讘讞专 讘讚讜讚 诇讛讬讜转 注诇 注诪讬 讬砖专讗诇, is mashma that this that He chose David Hamelech is not only that through David we found out that the place He chose was Yerushalayim, but it's mashma that the choice in David as the king of Israel is connected, directly connected, with the choice of Yerushalayim as the city in which Hashem's name should dwell. And in Divrei Hayamim 讘壮, 拽驻讬讟诇 讜壮, 驻住讜拽 讛壮 讜讜壮, where he repeats the same thing over again, there it seems even more that this is the peshat in the 驻住讜拽, that what the 驻住讜拽 is saying is that there is a connection between the choice in David and the choice in Yerushalayim. And the truth is that in the Zohar, in 驻专砖转 讜讬拽讛诇, which is Zohar 讞诇拽 讘壮, 讚祝 拽爪状讞, 注诪讜讚 讗壮, it says clearly, he asks the kushya there, he says, 讛讗讬 拽专讗 诇讗讜 专讬砖讗 住讬驻讗 讜诇讗讜 住讬驻讗 专讬砖讗, that the beginning is not the same as the end, the end is not the same as the beginning, because in the beginning he starts off about the choice of which city, and he finishes off with the choice of David. And he answers that when Hashem had the will to build the city, first He looked in to see who is going to be the leader, who is going to be the king, and after He saw that the leader is going to be David, then He decided to make Yerushalayim as the city. So we see clearly, according to the Zohar, that the choice that Hashem did in Yerushalayim depended on the choice of David as the Melech Yisrael, that before He decided to have Yerushalayim as the city, first He chose in David as the king. So it's not only that it was through David that the choice of Yerushalayim came, but the choice in David as the king is connected to the choice of Yerushalayim. So we have to understand, what is the connection between the two? Why is it that the choice of Hashem in Yerushalayim comes only after He chose first in David? Why couldn't it be that He should not have chosen David, and nevertheless chosen Yerushalayim as the city where the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 should be built?
And we see this connection also legabei the building of the third 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, as the Rambam says in Hilchot Berachot, 驻专拽 讘壮, 讛诇讻讛 讚壮, there he speaks about the 讘专讻讛 诪谞讞诐 注诪讬 讬砖专讗诇 讘讘谞讬谉 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, he says, 讻诇 诪讬 砖诇讗 讗诪专 诪诇讻讜转 讘讬转 讚讜讚, anybody who did not mention the 诪诇讻讜转 讘讬转 讚讜讚 when he speaks about the The comfort that we're going to have with the rebuilding of Yerushalayim, he says is not a 讘专讻讛, 砖讗讬谉 谞讞诪讛 讙诪讜专讛 讗诇讗 讘讞讝专转 诪诇讻讜转 讘讬转 讚讜讚. There's no real 谞讞诪讛, no real comfort in the building of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, unless the 诪诇讻讜转 讘讬转 讚讜讚, the kingship of David HaMelech will come back through the coming of Mashiach. So we see that the 注谞讬谉 of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 讛砖诇讬砖讬, which is because of Hashem's choice in 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, also is connected to the fact that there is 诪诇讻讜转 讘讬转 讚讜讚, which means that Hashem chose David HaMelech as the king. Now likhora, what is the connection between the two? Now the truth is that the Zohar explains that everything depends on the leader. If the leader, the king, is good, then everything is good. If the leader chas v'shalom is bad, then things are bad. And therefore, when Hashem chose David HaMelech, 诪诪讬诇讗 the leader was going to be a good leader, so therefore, when He chose 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, that's a good choice. Then the choice will exist because the leader will be David. But likhora, we still need explanation, because it would make no difference whether first He chose 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 and then David, or first David and then 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, as long as the leader of Yerushalayim is Dovid, who is good, then this will be good. But it's mashma from the pasuk that in order to be able to choose Yerushalayim, He had to first choose Dovid. Now l'chorah, what is the pshat? Why did He have to first choose Dovid? It's mashma that the fact that Hashem chose Yerushalayim could only take place after He chose Dovid, and there's a very strong connection between the choice of Hashem in Dovid Hamelech 诇讙讘讬 the choice of Hashem in Yerushalayim.
But the pshat is as follows. When we say Hashem chose Yerushalayim, it wasn't just stam a choice that He chose that this should be the place in which the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 should be built and Hashem's name should be. But the choice in Yerushalayim is, as we say, a 讘讞讬专讛 谞爪讞讬转, an eternal choice, a choice forever. And as the Rambam explains it in Pirush Hamishnayot in 诪住讻转讗 讚讝讘讞讬诐, 驻专拽 讬\"讚 诪砖谞讛 讞', he says 拽专讗 讗转 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 谞讞诇讛. Why is Yerushalayim called nachalah? Because the pasuk refers to it as a nachalah, as an inheritance. 讘讙诇诇 拽讘讬注讜转 拽讚讜砖转讛 讜拽讬讜诪讛 诇注讜诇诐, because the 拽讘讬注讜转 of the kedushah, the establishment of the holiness in Yerushalayim, and its existence is forever. And he quotes the pasuk in Tehillim 爪\"讚, 拽驻讬讟诇 爪\"讚 驻住讜拽 讬\"讚, where it says: 谞讞诇转讜 诇讗 讬注讝讜讘, Hashem won't let go of His nachalah, this refers to Yerushalayim. And he says because 讻讬 讘讞专 讛砖诐 讗转 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, Hashem chose Yerushalayim for His Shechinah, and he continues 讜讘讞专 讗转 讬砖专讗诇 诇讜 诇住讙讜诇讛, Hashem chose the Bnei Yisrael as His nation. And he says that just like Hashem will not let go of the Yidden as His nation, He will never let go of this place that He chose. And he continues that the 谞爪讞讬讜转 of the kedushah of Yerushalayim, the eternity of the holiness of Yerushalayim is mentioned in the 驻住讜拽 讝讗转 诪谞讜讞转讬 注讚讬 注讚, this is my menuchah forever. So from here we see that Yerushalayim was chosen by Hashem forever. And the kedushah of Yerushalayim is forever as a result of His choice. In other words, the bechirah, the choice that Hashem made on Yerushalayim, was a choice that gave a 谞爪讞讬讜转, that brought a eternity to Yerushalayim. And this is concerning both dinim. First of all, concerning the din of the building of the Beit Hamikdash, that the halachah is that you are not allowed to build a house for Hashem any other place but in Yerushalayim, as the Rambam says in the beginning of Hilchot Beit Habechirah, 讛诇讻讛 讙', that 讻讬讜谉 砖谞讘谞讛 讛诪拽讚砖 讘讬专讜砖诇讬诐, as soon as the Beit Hamikdash was built in 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, 谞讗住专讜 讻诇 讛诪拽讜诪讜转 讻讜诇诐 诇讘谞讜转 讘讛谉 讘讬转 诇讛', so now it is forbidden to build a house for Hashem in any other place, 讜讗讬谉 砖诐 讘讬转 诇讚讜专讜转 讛讚讜专讜转 讗诇讗 讘讬专讜砖诇讬诐 讘诇讘讚, there is no other house for Hashem for all generations except Yerushalayim, and he quotes the 驻住讜拽 讝讗转 诪谞讜讞转讬 注讚讬 注讚. So concerning the place where you build the Beit Hamikdash, Yerushalayim is the place forever. And also legabei the din of 拽讚讜砖转 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, that the kedushah that was put into Yerushalayim after Hashem chose it, is a kedushah forever. Which means that even at a time when there is no Beit Hamikdash, the Rambam paskens the kedushah of Yerushalayim is there forever, because the Rambam paskens that even though the Beit Hamikdash is destroyed, nevertheless, the 拽讚讜砖讛 专讗砖讜谞讛, 拽讬讚砖讛 诇砖注转讛 拽讬讚砖讛 诇注转讬讚 诇讘讜讗. The kedushah, the first 拽讚讜砖讛 that was put in at the time when they built the first Beit Hamikdash into the area of the Beit Hamikdash and the Har Habayit, that remains forever. And this is a result of the choice of Hashem in Jerusalem. So this is not only 诇讙讘讬 the fact that you're not allowed to build a house for Hashem in any other place, but the choice of Hashem is an eternal choice even 诇讙讘讬 the kedushah of Jerusalem.
But the question that comes up is that how is it possible for a physical object to have the concept of eternity, of 谞爪讞讬讜转. We're talking here about choosing the place. Now place is a creation of Hashem, so it is limited, as the Rambam says that 讻诇 讛讜讛 谞驻住讚. Anything that was created, that wasn't there always, is 谞驻住讚, will eventually stop. So every 讚讘专 讙砖诪讬, every physical object, cannot be considered a 讚讘专 谞爪讞讬, cannot be considered an eternal matter. So how is it possible to say that the 讘讞讬专讛 of Hashem in Jerusalem, which is a physical place, is a 讘讞讬专讛 谞爪讞讬转, is an eternal 讘讞讬专讛, which means it brings the concept of eternity into the 诪拽讜诐, into the place of the Har Habayit or of Jerusalem? So there must be something else which is a 讻诇讬, which is a vessel to the 注谞讬谉 of eternity, and that other thing is connected to Jerusalem, and because of that other eternal thing, the place of Jerusalem and the Beit Hamikdash can also get in itself the concept of eternity. Even though 诪爪讚 注爪诪讛 by itself it couldn't, but being that it's connected to something else which is eternal, so it itself could become a 讻诇讬, a vessel to receive the concept of eternity. And therefore, in order for Hashem's 讘讞讬专讛 to take place in Jerusalem, there first had to be a 讘讞讬专讛 in David Hamelech. Because we know that the 讘讞讬专讛 that Hashem chose David Hamelech was an eternal 讘讞讬专讛. So then the kingship is for him and his children, the males, forever. 砖谞讗诪专, and he quotes the pasuk that says in Shmuel 讘壮 拽讗驻讬讟注诇 讝壮 驻住讜拽 讟状讝: 讻住讗讱 讬讛讬讛 谞讻讜谉 注讚 注讜诇诐, your chair will stay forever. And he continues: 讗祝 注诇 驻讬 砖诇讗 讝讻讛 讗诇讗 诇讻砖专讬诐, even though Dovid Hamelech was zocheh in his malchus only for the proper children, 诇讗 转讻专转 讛诪诇讜讻讛 诪讝专注 讚讜讚 诇注讜诇诐. The malchus will not go away from the children of Dovid forever. 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗 讛讘讟讬讞讜 讘讻讱, 讛砖诐 promised him that, 砖谞讗诪专, and he quotes the pasuk in Tehillim 拽讗驻讬讟注诇 驻状讟 驻住讜拽 诇状讗, where it says 讗诐 讬注讝讘讜 讘谞讬讜 转讜专转讬, if his children will let go of my 转讜专讛, 讜讘诪砖驻讟讬 诇讗 讬诇讻讜谉, and they will not go in my 诪砖驻讟讬诐, 讜驻拽讚转讬 讘砖讘讟 驻砖注诐, I will remember their aveirot with a whip, 讜讘谞讙注讬诐, and with plagues, 注讜谞诐, their sins, but still 讜讞住讚讬 诇讗 讗驻讬专 诪注诪讜, I will not destroy my chesed from him. Which means whatever happens, Malchus Beis Dovid will remain. And this comes as a result of Hashem choosing in Dovid Hamelech. As it says in that same kapitel, 驻状讟, earlier in 驻住讜拽 讚壮 and 讛壮, it says 讻专转讬 讘专讬转 诇讘讞讬专讬 谞砖讘注转讬 诇讚讜讚 注讘讚讬. I made a bris to my choice, I swore to my 注讘讚 讚讜讚, 注讚 注讜诇诐 讗讻讬谉 讝专注讱 讜讘谞讬转讬 诇讚专 讜讚专 讻住讗讱 住诇讛. Forever I will have your chair. So we see that Hashem chose Dovid Hamelech and the choice that he chose Dovid Hamelech was a choice forever, a netzchiyusdike choice.
And this eternity that's there in Dovid is connected to the metzius and the neshamah of Dovid Hamelech, because he was an eved Hashem, he was a servant of Hashem, he was completely battel to Hashem, he nullified his own metzius to be battel to Hashem. So in him was able to be nisgaleh, to be revealed, this koach of Hashem which is beyond any limitations, beyond any 讙讘讜诇, which is the eternity of Hashem. And as the Chazal also say in Sotah 讚祝 讟壮 住讜祝 注诪讜讚 讗壮 and also brought down in the Piskta Rabbati 驻专拽 讘壮 讜壮 and in Midrash Tehillim 拽讗驻讬讟注诇 住状讘 at the end, that 讻诇 诪注砖讬 讬讚讬 讚讜讚 谞爪讞讬讬诐. Whatever David HaMelech made were 谞爪讞讬讬诐 and that's why the gates that were built in the first Beit HaMikdash by David HaMelech were not destroyed, it was swallowed in the ground and when Mashiach will come, it'll come out again. Because David HaMelech himself is connected to the concept of 谞爪讞讬讜转 of eternity, because his neshamah was completely batal to Hashem, one with Hashem more than other people. So just like Hashem is beyond any changes, any limits, so was the neshamah of David more than by everybody else and therefore within David was able to be revealed the choice of Hashem, which is an eternal choice. The place of 诪诇讻讜转 讘讬转 讚讜讚 was Jerusalem. As the Rambam says in Hilchot Melachim 驻专拽 讗壮 讛诇讻讛 讬壮 that 讗讬谉 诪诪谞讬诐, you don't appoint any king in 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, 诇注讜诇诐 讗诇讗 诪诇讱 讬砖专讗诇 诪讝专注 讚讜讚, only from David HaMelech. So Jerusalem is connected to David and therefore Jerusalem is called Ir David in Shmuel Bet 驻专拽 讛壮 驻住讜拽 讝壮 and many other places, and we also find in Tehillim a connection between Jerusalem and 诪诇讻讜转 讚讜讚, as it says in 拽讗驻讬讟注诇 诪状讞 驻住讜拽 讙壮: 拽专讬转 诪诇讱 专讘. This is the city of 诪诇讱 专讘. And we know that when was the 诪诇讻讜转 of David HaMelech 讘砖诇讬诪讜转 complete? Only after he came to Jerusalem, as it says in Shmuel Bet 拽讗驻讬讟注诇 讛壮 驻住讜拽 讗壮 and 讛壮. So we see the direct connection between Jerusalem and David Hamelech. So because David Hamelech had the concept of 谞爪讞讬讜转 within him, which came as a choice of David Hamelech, this made the place of David Hamelech also a keli, a vessel to receive the eternal choice of Hashem in the place of Yerushalayim. And this is why after the Beis Hamikdash was finished in the month of Cheshvan, so later on, Shlomo Hamelech said that from the day Hashem took the Yidden out of Mitzrayim, He didn't choose any city except Yerushalayim, and He chose David first to be the king on the Bnei Yisrael. And the question was, why does the bechirah in Yerushalayim depend on the bechirah in David? And the answer is, because since the bechirah in Yerushalayim, the choice in Yerushalayim is an eternal bechirah, forever, and this cannot take place on a physical place, there has to be something in connection to that place which can be a keli to 谞爪讞讬讜转, to eternity. And through that choice, the place will also get the 讘讞讬专讛 谞爪讞讬转. And therefore he said that 讜讗讘讞专 讘讚讜讚 诇讛讬讜转 注诇 注诪讬 讬砖专讗诇, first Hashem chose David Hamelech, and this is a 讘讞讬专讛 谞爪讞讬转. And because the place of David is Yerushalayim, so now Yerushalayim can also have a 讘讞讬专讛 谞爪讞讬转, and that will be the place forever and ever where the Beis Hamikdash will be built, and as the place where the kedushah will stay forever.
