Month of Tammuz
Why the month after Matan Torah outranks the month of Matan Torah itself.
Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Tammuz · 16:47
Explains why the whole month of Sivan, not just the day of Matan Torah, carries the status of the giving of the Torah, comparing it to how the miracle of Purim colors its entire month. Shows why Tammuz, the month that follows, represents the Bnei Yisrael's own avodah of living out the Torah, developing the gematria pattern of gimmel and dalet, giver and receiver, through the four kabbalistic worlds, and concludes that receiving and acting on the Torah is, in a certain sense, greater than the giving itself.

The month of Tamuz comes right after the month of Sivan. Sivan is the month of 诪转谉 转讜专讛, so Tamuz, which comes right after Sivan, is the first month right after 诪转谉 转讜专讛. And even though 诪转谉 转讜专讛 was in the beginning of the month, so lichora how can we say that the month of Sivan is the month of 诪转谉 转讜专讛 when really 诪转谉 转讜专讛 was just on a certain day in the beginning of the month of Sivan? But we understand that inyan of 诪转谉 转讜专讛 has a special connection to the whole month, as we see that in Chumash, in 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘, the Torah only mentions that 诪转谉 转讜专讛 was in the third month. It doesn't mention exactly which day of the month it was. In 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, in Gemara, it tells us which day of the month it was, and even there it's not so clear. There's a machloket between Rabbi Yosi and the chachamim in 讙诪专讗 砖讘转 讚祝 驻状讜 注诪讜讚 讘壮 whether it was the sixth day of the month or the seventh day of the month. But in Chumash itself, it doesn't mention bichlal which day of the month it was. It just says it was in the third month, so obviously it has a connection to the whole month. And even in Gemara, in 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, in 诪住讻转 砖讘转 讚祝 驻状讝 注诪讜讚 讗壮 it says it was in the 讬专讞讗 转诇讬转讗讬, in the third month. So we see that we connect the month to 诪转谉 转讜专讛. The fact that in Chumash it says it was 讘讬讜诐 讛砖诇讬砖讬, and the Gemara also mentions that it was 讬讜诪讗 转诇讬转讗讬, that's not the day of the month, that's the third day from the days of hachana, for preparation to 诪转谉 转讜专讛. But as far as the day of the month, it's not mentioned clearly in 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘. So we see that the inyan of 诪转谉 转讜专讛 has a connection to the whole month. And we do find a similar thing, that even though something happened in a specific day of the month, but it has an effect on the whole month, and that is concerning Purim. It says 讛讞讜讚砖 讗砖专 谞讛驻讱 诇讛诐, it's the month that was changed from 讬讙讜谉 诇砖诪讞讛, from 讗讘诇 诇讬讜诐 讟讜讘, it was changed from mourning into joyous occasion, into holidays, etc. etc. Even though the miracle took place davka on a certain day, it took place on the 13th or the 14th day of the month of Adar, and therefore the celebration is on the 14th or on the 15th day of Adar, and still we say that the whole month became a special month, it has an effect on the whole month. And that's why the Yerushalmi says, and the Rama brings it, that 讛讬讻讗 讚- if a person knows he will not be able to read the Megillah in its proper time, he could read it any day from the beginning of the month of Adar. So we see that something that happens in a certain day of the month has a connection to the whole month.
So mimela getting back to our point here, the month of Sivan, the whole month, is the month of matan Torah. Matan Torah has an effect on the whole month of Sivan. So the first month that comes after matan Torah is the month of Tamuz. What does that show us? Being as this is the first month right after matan Torah, so this is the first month that represents the avodah of the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, the avodat Hashem of the Yidden. Because matan Torah is the 讙讬诇讜讬 诪诇诪注诇讛. Matan Torah was when the Torah was given 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐 from Hashem to the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇. So the inyan of matan Torah represents the fact that Hashem gave the Torah from its highest levels and brought it down into this world to the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇. What comes after that? The next step after Hashem giving the Torah is the step of the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇 working with the Torah, taking the Torah and using it and doing what the Torah wants of them. That is represented in the next month. Since the first month, the month of Sivan, is the month of matan Torah, so Tamuz is the month that represents the avodah of the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇 using the Torah, doing what the Torah wants them to do. Which is similar, to a certain degree, to what the Baal Shem Tov used to say, that the second day of Shavuot is a very, very special day, even more than the first. And his talmid, the Mezritcher Maggid, explained that what is so special about the second day of Shavuot, and he said because this is the first day after matan Torah. Which means that Shavuos, the sixth day of Sivan, is 诪转谉 转讜专讛, that's when 讛砖诐 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐 诪诇诪注诇讛 gave us the Torah, so the day afterwards, the first day after 诪转谉 转讜专讛, represents the avodah of the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, the fact that the Yidden take the Torah and work with the Torah and do what the Torah says. And the same is concerning months. Just like we're speaking concerning days, that the day after 诪转谉 转讜专讛, the Mezritcher Maggid explained, is the day that represents the beginning of the avodah of the 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, so too, the first month after the month of 诪转谉 转讜专讛 represents the month when the Yidden start their avodah in of serving Hashem.
And u've'emet, this is also hinted in the fact that Sivan is 讞讜讚砖 讛砖诇讬砖讬, is the third month, and the Gemara makes the whole fuss over it that this is 讬专讞讗 转诇讬转讗讬, the third month, and the month of Tammuz is the fourth month. And in Tanach when it refers to the 转注谞讬转 of 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝, it says it's called 爪讜诐 讛专讘讬注讬, the fast of the fourth month. So it refers to 讞讜讚砖 转诪讜讝 as the fourth month. What is the significance of the fourth 诇讙讘讬 the third? As the Gemara says in 砖讘转 讚祝 拽状讚 注诪讜讚 讗壮 that the letters 讙诪诇 讚诇转, which is three and four, represent the 注谞讬谉 of 讙讜诪诇 讚诇讬诐. 讙讜诪诇 means 讙诪讬诇讜转 讞住讚, doing chesed, and 讚诇, it means to the poor. So 讙诪诇 讚诇转, 讙诪诇 is the word 讙讜诪诇, the giving, 讚诇转 is from the word 讚诇, which is the poor, is the 诪拽讘诇, the one that receives the 讙诪讬诇讜转 讞住讚. So we see from that Gemara that 讙诪诇 refers to the giver, and 讚诇转 refers to the taker. 讙诪诇 refers to the 诪砖驻讬注, and 讚诇转 refers to the 诪拽讘诇. And this is as we said before, that the month of Sivan is the month of 诪转谉 转讜专讛, the month when Hashem gave the Torah, and even though it's also the time of 拽讘诇转 讛转讜专讛 when 讗讬讚谉 received the Torah, but it's only receiving what they were given, but it doesn't represent yet the 诪拽讘诇, meaning the utilizing of what you got, but the 讚诇转, that is the 诪拽讘诇, the one that gets the tzedakah, that is, as we said before, the beginning of using, that the one that received the Torah uses the Torah and does what the Torah says. And this also fits to the fact that we had three 讗讘讜转 and four 讗诪讛讜转. Three fathers and four mothers. Bichlal we know the difference between a father and a mother, a man and a wife, is that the man is always considered a 诪砖驻讬注, the giver, and the wife is considered a 诪拽讘诇, the receiver. So when we talk about the 讗讘讜转 and the 讗诪讛讜转, we see that we have three 讗讘讜转 and four 讗诪讛讜转. And that fits to what we said before, that the number three represents the 注谞讬谉 of 讛砖驻注讛 or the giving, and the number four already represents the 诪拽讘诇, the receiver, that he already received it in a way that it becomes his and he's able to use it.
And we see this concept also in the 注谞讬谞讬诐, the way the 注讜诇诪讜转, the way the worlds are set up. And now we will get a little bit into the Kabbalah explanation of it. In Kabbalah we find that there are four 注讜诇诪讜转. Generally speaking, there are four worlds. And the four worlds are called in Kabbalah, 讗爪讬诇讜转, 讘专讬讗讛, 讬爪讬专讛, and 注砖讬讛. 注砖讬讛 is the lowest world, which is connected to this physical world as we have it in 注讜诇诐 讛讝讛. And then you have the higher worlds, which are included in the three levels of 讗爪讬诇讜转, 讘专讬讗讛, 讬爪讬专讛. B'emet we find these four expressions in a 驻住讜拽. The 驻住讜拽 says, 讻诇 讛谞拽专讗 讘砖诪讬 讜诇讻讘讜讚讬 讘专讗转讬讜 讬爪专转讬讜 讗祝 注砖讬转讬讜. So in this 驻住讜拽 we find the expression 讘专讗转讬讜, which means I created it, which is from the word 讘专讬讗讛. 讬爪专转讬讜 means I formed it, which is the word 讬爪讬专讛. 讗祝 注砖讬转讬讜, I also made it, that is the word 注砖讬讛. But before the word 讘专讗转讬讜, it says 讻诇 讛谞拽专讗 讘砖诪讬 讜诇讻讘讜讚讬. That refers to, as it says in Kabbalah, to the first level, which is the level called 讗爪讬诇讜转. This is also the explanation in the four expressions that we use in 拽讬讚讜砖 诇讘谞讛. We say 讘专讜讱 注讜砖讱, 讘专讜讱 讬讜爪专讱, 讘专讜讱 讘讜专讗讱, and 讘专讜讱 拽讜谞讱. So we also use these four expressions. Depends according to which 谞讜住讞, in which order we say it, but the four expressions refer to these four worlds. 注讜砖讱 is 注砖讬讛, 讬讜爪专讱 is 讬爪讬专讛, 讘讜专讗讱 is 讘专讬讗讛, and 拽讜谞讱, that refers to 注讜诇诐 讛讗爪讬诇讜转 as it is explained in many 住驻专讬 拽讘诇讛. We also mention these four levels when we talk about the neshama coming down to this world. We say every morning in 讘专讻讜转 讛砖讞专: 谞砖诪讛 砖谞转转 讘讬 讟讛讜专讛 讛讬讗, the neshama that you gave me is 讟讛讜专, it's pure. 讗转讛 讘专讗转讛, 讗转讛 讬爪专转讛, 讗转讛 谞驻讞转讛 讘讬. You created it, you formed it, you blew it into me. So here too we mention these four things. First we say the neshama is 讟讛讜专讛 讛讬讗, is pure. That is the neshama the way it's in the highest level which is called in the 注讜诇诐 讛讗爪讬诇讜转. Then it comes down to the level called 注讜诇诐 讛讘专讬讗讛, that's 讗转讛 讘专讗转讛. Then it comes down to the level called 注讜诇诐 讛讬爪讬专讛, 讗转讛 讬爪专转讛. And then it comes down into 注讜诇诐 讛注砖讬讛, into this physical world, and that's the expression 讗转讛 谞驻讞转讛 讘讬, you blew it into me, into me meaning into the guf, the way the guf, the body, is in 注讜诇诐 讛注砖讬讛. So when we talk about these four levels We also see the same thing. The first three levels, which is 注讜诇诐 讛讗爪讬诇讜转, 注讜诇诐 讛讘专讬讗讛, and 注讜诇诐 讛讬爪讬专讛, these are four spiritual levels, which are still 注谞讬谞讬诐 专讜讞谞讬讬诐, 注讜诇诪讜转 专讜讞谞讬讬诐. They are spiritual worlds. The 注讜诇诐 讛注砖讬讛, that is already a physical world. This is 注讜诇诐 讛讝讛 讛讙砖诪讬. This is the one that's 诪拽讘诇 from all the spiritual levels. So here too, we see the difference between three and four. The first three, that is the 诪砖驻讬注. That is the spiritual levels which give the 讛砖驻注讛 into this world. Then the fourth level, that is 注讜诇诐 讛讝讛 讛讙砖诪讬. That is already the way the 讛砖驻注讛 is 谞转拽讘诇, is received by the 诪拽讘诇, by the receiver. And that's also why bichlal we know that everything is made up of four levels, 讗砖, 专讜讞, 诪讬诐, 注驻专. 讗砖 is fire, 专讜讞 is air, wind, 诪讬诐 is water, 注驻专 is sand. As the Rambam explains in the beginning of the fourth 驻专拽 of Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah. And in Zohar and in Tikkunei Zohar, many times we learn that there are four elements, 讗砖, 专讜讞, 诪讬诐, 注驻专. Nevertheless, in Sefer Yetzirah, in the holy Sefer Yetzirah, it only mentions three. It doesn't mention the fourth, because we have three and then the fourth, these are two separate categories. The three is a 诪砖驻讬注, and the fourth is a 诪拽讘诇. And in Pardes it says in the Shaar HaMachria'im 驻专拽 讙, that the 讬住讜讚 讛注驻专 is revealed through the first three 讬住讜讚讜转. You have really three 讬住讜讚讜转 and they are 诪讙诇讛 the fourth one, the 讬住讜讚 讛注驻专. At any event, we see that the 注谞讬谉 of three is connected to the 诪砖驻讬注, and the 注谞讬谉 of four, that is already the 诪拽讘诇. When we apply that to the 注谞讬谉 of 诪转谉 转讜专讛, just like we said before, 诪转谉 转讜专讛, the giving of the Torah, is the concept of 讛砖驻注讛. Hashem was 诪砖驻讬注 转讜专讛 讜诪爪讜转 to the Bnei Yisrael. Then the Bnei Yisrael have to take the Torah and use the Torah, follow the Torah, work with the Torah, do in 注讘讜讚转 讛砖诐 as it says in the Torah. So the 注谞讬谉 of 诪转谉 转讜专讛 is connected to the number three, and the number four represents the 注讘讜讚讛 of the Bnei Yisrael. And that's the difference between the month of Sivan and the month of Tammuz. The month of Sivan, which is the 讞讜讚砖 of Matan Torah, that is 讞讜讚砖 讛砖诇讬砖讬, that is the third month. The month of Tammuz, which is the fourth month, the month that comes right after Matan Torah, that represents the concept of the Yidden serving Hashem, already doing in what Hashem wants us to do.
Now on one hand, it makes sense to say that when the 讛砖驻注讛 is accepted by the receiver, it definitely is in a lower 诪讚专讙讛 than the way it's given. We could imagine that the Torah the way it's by Hashem is definitely in a higher level than as much as we are able to accept it. The truth is that in what we accept, what we receive, we have the complete Torah the way it is by Hashem. As the Arizal explains on the lashon of bentchen that we say, 讜注诇 转讜专转讱 砖诇讬诪讚转谞讜, and your Torah that you taught us. He says the pshat is that the one that we are taught, the Torah that we have, is 转讜专转讱, is your Torah, the Torah of Hashem. So in essence, the Torah that we take as 诪拽讘诇讬诐, as receivers, is the same Torah that Hashem gave us. But the 讙讬诇讜讬 in a revealed fashion, what we're able to grasp is definitely not the same level as the Torah that is given by Hashem, because we are only to grasp in a revealed way the 讞讬爪讜谞讬讜转, the outer part of the Torah. We can't grasp the 注爪诐, the essence of the Torah the way it is by Hashem. After all, we are human beings. We are limited, so how can we with our limited 讻讞讜转 take the unlimited Torah of Hashem? So therefore, the way we take it, it's in a lower 诪讚专讙讛. But on the other hand, when we take the Torah and we learn it and we do what the Torah wants us to do, we accomplish what Hashem had in mind when he gave the Torah, which means that the whole goal of Hashem giving the Torah, the purpose of his giving the Torah, is so that we should fulfill it. So it comes out that even though as far as level, the Torah is in a higher level the way it's in the mashpia, the way it's at the time of the giving, rather than the way it's in the mekabel, the way we receive it and the way we work with it and the way we use it, but still there is a big maalah in the number four and the way we are mekabel it because that is the goal. And just like it says, 住讜祝 诪注砖讛 讘诪讞砖讘讛 转讞讬诇讛, that whatever comes out to the 住讜祝 诪注砖讛, the bottom, to the end, to the action, that is actually 诪讞砖讘讛 转讞讬诇讛, that is the 诪讞砖讘讛 in the beginning. That is the whole goal, and that is the highest level, so 诇讙讘讬 转讜专讛 is the same. The way the Torah is by Hashem, it's a very high level. That says, 讜讗讛讬讛 讗爪诇讜 讗诪讜谉. The Torah says, \"I was, so to speak, nursed by Hashem. I was the toy of Hashem. 讜讗讛讬讛 讗爪诇讜 砖注砖讜注讬诐 讬讜诐 讬讜诐.\" Hashem has pleasure from the Torah. So the Torah is the pleasure of Hashem, which means it's the essence of Hashem. So the Torah is in a very high madrega. Nevertheless, Hashem said He's giving the Torah down here, and when the malachim complained and they said they want the Torah to be given on 砖诪讬诐, 转谞讛 讛讜讚讱 注诇 讛砖诪讬诐, 讛砖诐 told Moshe Rabbeinu to answer them, and Moshe Rabbeinu's answer was that the Torah doesn't belong to them. The tachlit of the Torah is to be given down here into this world. So even though the Torah is given to this world, and it's covered up in a covering of gashmiyut, and the way we take the Torah, we take it in gashmiyut, nevertheless, when we take the Torah, and we do what the Torah says, we accomplish the 专爪讜谉 讛注诇讬讜谉, we do what Hashem want, what Hashem had in mind of the 转讜专讛 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 all the way in the beginning. So it comes out that even though as far as spiritual level it seems it's lower, but it's higher because we accomplish the ratzon of Hashem. We reach the level of the true 专爪讜谉 what Hashem had in mind l'chatchila. And that is the 诪注诇讛 of 讞讜讚砖 转诪讜讝 over 讞讜讚砖 住讬讜谉. On one hand, what 讞讜讚砖 转诪讜讝 represents, the fourth month, the idea of 诪拽讘诇 is a lower 诪讚专讙讛, but on the other hand, it's a yeridah letzorech aliyah. It's a yeridah, it's lower, but through the lower we get higher, because being this is what Hashem wanted, so that by doing this, we actually get connected to Hashem even higher than the way the Torah is before the Torah was given down here. And that's why actually Hashem gave the Torah down here, because only through the Bnei Yisrael doing what it says in the Torah, doing it b'maaseh in a 讙砖诪讬讜转讚讬拽注 form, we connect ourselves to Hashem and the 专爪讜谉 of Hashem is fulfilled. And this is the 诪注诇讛 of 讞讜讚砖 转诪讜讝, even over 讞讜讚砖 住讬讜谉. Because 讞讜讚砖 住讬讜谉 represents Matan Torah, and 讞讜讚砖 转诪讜讝 represents the inyan that comes after Matan Torah, the inyan that the Bnei Yisrael actually utilize the Torah, take the Torah, learn Torah, and do what the Torah wants them to do, and by doing that, we get united with a true 讬讞讜讚 谞爪讞讬, with a true eternal connection.
