SHEMOT

Parshas Beshalach

Rashi's line that Moshe was told to stop praying at the sea's edge becomes a lesson about giving a full, undivided effort when someone else needs your help.

Part of Shemot

Looks at Rashi's comment that Hashem told Moshe to stop crying out to Him at the Yam Suf — an instruction to stop davening, not start. Develops the answer that saving a fellow Jew demands total commitment of one's whole essence, and that even tefillah, the highest of avodahs, has to step aside when someone else's rescue is at stake. Closes with the practical takeaway for helping another Yid, materially or spiritually.

Moshe Standing and Praying at the Sea

A ווארט from the רבי on this week's פרשה. In the תורה it says that when the אידן were standing in front of the ים, the ים was in front of them, the מצרים were behind them, and they were in trouble so to speak. So the פסוק says, ויאמר השם אל משה, השם said to משה, מה תצעק אלי, why are you screaming to me? דבר אל בני ישראל ויסעו, speak to the אידן and let them travel. And then he told him pick up the stick and turn it over to this, move it over the ים, and the ים will split, and the אידן will go into the ים ביבשה, in the dry land. And רש״י writes, when the אייבערשטער said מה תצעק אלי, why are you screaming to me? למדנו שהיה משה עומד ומתפלל, that tells us that משה was standing and דאווענען. אמר ליה הקדוש ברוך הוא, השם said to him, לא עת עתה להאריך בתפילה, now is not the time to דאווען at length, שישראל נתונים בצרה, אידן are in a צרה now, now is not the time to דאווען, now is the time to do what I'm telling you to do.

Why the Ribbono Shel Olam Told Him to Stop Davening

And the רבי asks a שאלה. Wouldn't it be enough if the תורה would say that השם said to משה, דבר אל בני ישראל ויסעו, speak to the אידן, let them travel, let them continue into the ים, and you split the ים? Why does the תורה have to also have to say what the אייבערשטער told him not to do? Wouldn't it be enough, he says, the אייבערשטער told משה, tell him what to do, this is what you have to do in order to save the אידן? Why does the תורה have to mention he said מה תצעק אלי, which is don't דאווען, he's telling him don't דאווען. And it seems from this that the אייבערשטער טאקע meant it. Not only did he tell him what to do, he told him clearly, don't דאווען. The אייבערשטער didn't want him to דאווען. But the question is, what's wrong if he would דאווען? We know דאווענען is the greatest thing. דאווענען is מלשון הטופל כלי חרס, which means connection, you connect yourself to the אייבערשטער, you could imagine משה רבינו'ס דאווענען, what that meant with all the greatness of משה רבינו. So what would be wrong if he would דאווען? In other words, he could have done both things. He could have געדאווענט and at the same time, together, he would have told them to ויסעו and then do what he has to do over the ים, and at the same time, דאווענען. Why did the אייבערשטער want him not to דאווען?

The Lesson: Total Commitment When Helping a Fellow Jew

And the רבי answers that when it comes to helping a איד, you have to put yourself into it with your whole עצם, with your whole being. In this case, this was going to save the אידן, משה was supposed to do something that would save the אידן. So the אייבערשטער told him, you have to put yourself into it with your whole עצם. And we know that if you want to do something with your whole עצם, if you do something else along with it, then automatically it minimizes in the other thing that you're supposed to do from your whole עצם, because you can't have your whole עצם in both. So that's what the אייבערשטער told משה רבינו. At this point, you have to save the אידן, and the way to do it is דבר אל בני ישראל ויסעו, etc., etc., put yourself into it with your whole עצם and nothing else. The greatest thing that could be, the ענין of דאווענען, which is so great, but as long as it's something else besides now being involved in helping the אידן, that is not good. So that's why the אייבערשטער said to him not only what he should do, but he told him מה תצעק אלי, why are you דאווענען to me? Stop דאווענען and put yourself completely in saving the אידן. And the רבי says the lesson from here obviously is for everyone, that when it comes to help another איד, whether it's helping him בגשמיות or helping him ברוחניות, you have to put yourself completely into it to make sure that you help him. And nothing else should take away from your involvement. And when you put yourself completely with your עצם, the אייבערשטער gives you the כח and it helps that you're מצליח that you טאקע help that איד בפועל ממש.
