SHEMOT

Parshas Vayakhel

Why the tiny pegs and ropes holding down the Mishkan's curtains still needed the same experts who wove them.

Part of Shemot

Rashi's list of what the chachmei lev had to build for the Mishkan includes the pegs and ropes that anchored the curtains to the ground — a strikingly small task for such skilled people. The Rebbe explains that because these pegs kept the curtains functioning, they were inseparable from the curtains themselves and had to be made with the same expertise. A mechanech or anyone doing holy work learns from this that the job isn't finished until even its smallest, least glamorous details are given the same full attention as the main task.

The pegs of the Mishkan and why experts were needed for small tasks

A vort from the Rebbe on this week's פרשה, פרשת ויקהל. פרשת ויקהל, it says that Moshe Rabbeinu told the Yidden what things they have to bring as donations for the building of the Mishkan. And then the pasuk says in פסוק י' in the beginning of the פרשה, וכל חכם לב בכם יבאו ויעשו את כל אשר צוה השם. And anyone who's very smart, a חכם לב, anyone who's an expert, he should come and do what Hashem commanded. And then the pesukim go through the list of what things these חכמי לב had to do, these smart people, these special experts, what they had to do. And then one of the things it says they had to do, it says, את יתדות המשכן, the pegs of the משכן, ואת יתדות החצר, and the pegs of the yard, ואת מיתריהם, and their ropes. And Rashi explains, what were the יתדות, what were the pegs for? לתקוע ולקשור בהם סופי היריעות בארץ, to stick in and to tie the edges of the יריעות, edges of the curtains to the ground, שלא ינועו ברוח, they shouldn't move when the wind blows. And מיתריהם means חבלים לקשור, the ropes to tie. So this is part of what the חכמי לב, the smart people, the experts had to do, the אומנים, the workers had to do.

Why these small details required chachmei lev

So the Rebbe asks a she'elah: many of the things, most of the things in the Mishkan were very special things that they had to do it, you had to know how to do it, you had to be an expert. But small things like this, to make these pegs just to tie down the יריעות, or the ropes to tie down the יריעות, the wind shouldn't blow it away, for that you need חכמי לב, for that you need special smart people? But this is included in the list where he says that the חכמי לב should go do it. Why were these important to be made by the חכמי לב?

Because they became part of the curtains themselves

And the Rebbe answers that because these things were connected to the יריעות, connected to these curtains, to the יריעות, to the covers that were there, and without these things, these pegs, they wouldn't do their job, so mimela they became part of the יריעות themselves. And since the יריעות themselves had to be made by the חכמי לב, so it's all one thing. So they have to do even the small things, because their job is to make the יריעות should be completely good and it should be able to do its job. And therefore, this is also included in the חכמי לב, even though they seem to be very simple things that anybody could do it.

The lesson for a mechanech: even the small details are part of the job

And the Rebbe says, from here we take out a lesson in avodat Hashem. When a person works in a holy work, like a person who is a mechanech, he's an educator of Jewish children, and for that you need to be a chacham, for that you need חכמי לב, you need somebody who's an expert, somebody who knows how to do it. Actually, as the Rambam says a lashon in הלכות תלמוד תורה, מצוה על כל חכם וחכם מישראל ללמד את כל התלמידים. It's a mitzvah on the chacham to teach the talmidim. So to teach תלמידים בכלל is a chochmah and you have to do it with chochmah and you need a חכם לב. But a person who's a chacham and he teaches the children, he might think to himself, \"You know, there are certain things that you need a chacham for, you need somebody with the expertise that's able to do it, and you need this chochmah, and that's something that he will do. But when there's other detail, smaller details, which are not part of the real real thing, that maybe he doesn't have to do, doesn't have to get involved. These are small things and that he can leave for other people who are not such expert, not so good.\" So the lesson we take from here is that a real mechanech who's doing holy work has to do a complete job. Even the small things are part of what he has to do. That means he has to be given over to the talmidim and care about them even in the small things. Like this case here, יתדות ומיתרים, which are the ropes and the pegs to hold down, which is a small thing, but you have to do that too. So just like by the Mishkan, you had to have חכמי לב to do the important things, so every little thing that's connected is part of their job, and only then their job is complete, the same thing here. When you do a holy job like like a mechanech, like a teacher, or anybody else who does a holy job that has an achrayut to do things, but for that you need a chacham, but in order for it to be matzliach, he has to get involved even in the small things, then his job is complete and he will be matzliach in raising the children, being mechanech the children in the proper way.
