topic tonight, as we all know, is 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬, who is a Jew? And what really made me think of this topic or choose this topic is because the last two weeks we discussed different things concerning 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, and the problems that we had in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, and we still have in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. And one of the problems that we had that the 专讘讬 spoke a lot about was concerning the question of 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬, who is a Jew? Now, basically, the topic will be about explaining what is the difference between a Jew and a 讙讜讬 according to the way it says in 转讜专讛, and explain 讞住讬讚讜转, because just in 讛诇讻讛 there is very simple thing, what a Jew is a Jew and a 讙讜讬 is a 讙讜讬. But 讞住讬讚讜转 explains it. And also touching the concept of 讙讬讜专, of conversion, and what is the idea of 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛, because that was really the problem when the whole issue of 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬 came up. But before we get into the 注谞讬谞讬诐 of what the 转讜专讛 and 讞住讬讚讜转 tells us about the 注谞讬谉 of a 讬讬讚 and a 讙讜讬 诇讛讘讚讬诇, just a little bit of historical background of what the problem was and how it started.
When they established the State of Israel, so they, one of the first laws that they made was what they called the Law of Return, 讞讜拽 讛砖讘讜转, which is the Law of Return, that any person who is considered a 讬讬讚 has the right to come back, to move to 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, and become an automatic citizen. Like this, every country has all kind of quotas and things, you can't just come into a country, there is immigration, all kinds of things. So here, they made a law that every 讬讬讚 has the right to return to 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, because originally we were all in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, and could come back, and automatically will have all the rights of the land, and he will automatically become a citizen. That was the Law of Return. When they made that Law of Return, they had to describe who is a Jew. The law is that any Jew who comes back to 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 has the right of living there and automatically becoming a citizen, but who is a Jew? So the wording in the law was like this: anybody who is 谞讜诇讚 诪讗诐 讬讛讜讚讬讛, anybody who is born from a Jewish mother, or 谞转讙讬讬专 讻讛诇讻讛, or anybody who converted according to the 讛诇讻讛, that is considered a Jew, and automatically he is able to come into 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, and automatically he is a citizen. As a
few years passed, there were certain elements that started, as we call 讘讜专讟砖讬谞讙, and started making trouble, that we should also accept into this 讞讜拽 讛砖讘讜转, into this law, Jews who were converted not 讻讛诇讻讛, not according to the 讛诇讻讛. That means converted by Reform or converted by Conservative, not Orthodox. Orthodox does the conversion 讻讛诇讻讛, Conservative does not do it 讻讛诇讻讛, and we will go into the details a little later, Reform certainly doesn't do it. Now, according to the wording of the law the way it was worded, they had, they were not included in this Law of Return. And therefore, if a person was converted by a Conservative rabbi or a Reform rabbi, was not allowed into 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. He was allowed like other people, but not under this Law of Return. And these people started making a whole tumult that, how come, the Israeli government does not recognize these conversions? They put pressure on the government till finally Ben-Gurion in 转砖讬\"讟, which is in 1959, Ben-Gurion sent out a letter, I think it was a hundred letters he sent out to a hundred great Jewish leaders all over the world, in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 and all over the world, to ask their opinion what would they say concerning this question that he named it, who is a Jew? Because other people say that if you're 谞转讙讬讬专 砖诇讗 讻讛诇讻讛, if you converted not according to 讛诇讻讛, you're also a Jew. And he got responses. Now,
many of the answers said that it has to be only if you're 诪讙讬讬专 讻讛诇讻讛. The one answer that impressed him the most, and I remember, I was very young then, but I still remember, I saw in the newspapers then, in the Israeli newspapers and in American newspapers, that Ben-Gurion said that the one answer that impressed him the most was the answer of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The 专讘讬 sent him two letters, and out of all hundred answers that he got from different 专讘谞讬诐, 讙讚讜诇讬 讬砖专讗诇, he only gave out to print, or maybe he gave out all, but they only printed the 专讘讬's answer. That was printed in all the Israeli newspapers. The 专讘讬's answer, it's printed now in the 讗讙专讜转 拽讜讚砖 in 讞诇拽 讬\"讟. So there you have the 专讘讬's answer. The 专讘讬 answered him first one letter and then a second letter. In the first letter, the 专讘讬 answered him very clearly, obviously, that a Jew according to the way the 诪住讜专讛, the way we have in tradition for all the years, and this was something that is accepted by everybody and doesn't make any split in 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, is if you're born from a Jewish mother and you're 诪讙讬讬专 according to the 讛诇讻讛. And he writes clearly, \"I'm not going to tell you what the 讛诇讻讛 is. It's very clear. It's 砖讜诇讞谉 注专讜讱, a 讟讜专, a 专诪讘状诐, you can look through and there you have it.\" That was the statement that the 专讘讬 answered. Then the 专讘讬 had a P.S. and wrote, it was about six-seven small paragraphs describing what 诪注诇讛, what specialty you will have if you follow this. And then the next day, I think this was, actually the date of the first letter was 讬状讞 讗讚专, no, 讞壮 讗讚专, 讞壮 讗讚专, which actually is 转砖讬状讟. It's, how much is that? 39 years ago, a week behind. Today is 讙壮 讗讚专, 讞壮 讗讚专. Then the next day, 讟壮 讗讚专, the 专讘讬 writes a second letter to him. And the 专讘讬 writes, \"I want to take this opportunity to write you something else, it's informal and maybe not diplomatic, but I'm taking this opportunity, and I'm writing it especially as a separate letter, because I don't want you to confuse this issue with the issue that I wrote in the letter before.\" And the 专讘讬 goes into the whole 讗专讬讻讜转 telling him that since he is the Prime Minister of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 and he has a great influence on 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, 诪诪讬诇讗 he has a great responsibility bringing in more 讬讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟, and he connects it to this question of 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬. But he specially did not mix it because he didn't want that 讘谉 讙讜专讬讜谉 should, as we say, 讟砖注驻注 讝讬讱 讗谉 and say, \"Ugh, this 驻专讟, this he doesn't accept, that he doesn't accept,\" so the whole thing would be messed up. So he writes him clearly, \"Just in case you don't accept anything I'm writing here, I don't want it to have any bad effect on what I wrote you previously yesterday.\" But, and he was very impressed with that letter, and I can't say it's only because of the 专讘讬's letter, but a lot because of the 专讘讬's letter and what other people wrote, he came to a decision clearly, and he 驻住拽'谞讟 that it cannot be changed. The law remained as it was before, that a person who's born from a Jewish mother and is 谞转讙讬讬专 讻讛诇讻讛 and converted according to 讛诇讻讛, is considered a Jew in this Law of Return, in 讞讜拽 讛砖讘讜转. And
therefore, when it comes to what they call the 转注讜讚转 讝讛讜转, which is the identification card, and they would have to write in what religion you are, only if a person was converted 讻讛诇讻讛, they would write in 讬讛讜讚讬, Jew. If the person was not converted 讻讛诇讻讛, if he would come to the Israeli government with a 爪注讟诇, a paper worded, signed by a Reform or Conservative rabbi that he was converted, they would not accept this person as a Jew. And it went off the agenda at that time. This was 转砖讬状讟, 1959. About 10 years later the thing came up again. That was about 转砖讻状讟, it came up again in the government and there's another pressure again and the Reform and the Conservative started pressuring and pressuring that we have to change this law. So quietly they made all kinds of meetings and things like that and they made all kinds of deals, unfortunately with one of the religious parties, 诪讝专讞讬, and what they did was they quietly changed the law that it did not say 讻讛诇讻讛 anymore, that from then on the law said that any person who is born from a Jewish mother 讗讜 砖谞转讙讬讬专, or that was converted, is considered a Jew and is accepted in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 and in his 转注讜讚转 讝讛讜转, in his identification card it will say 讬讛讜讚讬. When that came the 专讘讬 started 砖讟讜专注诪讬谞讙. I remember 驻讜专讬诐 转砖状诇, 驻讜专讬诐 1970. The 专讘讬 started by 驻讗专讘专讬讬谞讙注谉 speaking about this 注谞讬谉 with the greatest heartache. You can't imagine how much heart and energy the 专讘讬 put into this from that 驻讗专讘专讬讬谞讙注谉 on. Because it bothered him very much because this undermines the whole existence of 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. And the 专讘讬 spoke about this very strongly by 驻讗专讘专讬讬谞讙注谉, spoke against the religious parties, spoke all kinds of things. And from then on, for years, years, 10 years, 15 years, every single 驻讗专讘专讬讬谞讙注谉 the 专讘讬 spoke about 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬. Half of the 驻讗专讘专讬讬谞讙注谉 would go on 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬 to 砖讟讜专注诐 and scream against the government for changing this law, with all kinds of excuses that they gave. One excuse, for instance, that's just coming into my mind now, they said, \"What's wrong if it says 谞转讙讬讬专? It says that a person who converted. So you claim that their what they do is not conversion, so automatically when it says 谞转讙讬讬专, it means 讻讛诇讻讛, what are you complaining about?\" And the 专讘讬 was saying, \"So then why did you change it? Why did you have to change, take out the word 讻讛诇讻讛? Obviously specially you took it out in order for it to be accepted.\" The 专讘讬 砖讟讜专注诪讟 and spoke. The 专讘谞讬转 said to somebody then, this was year maybe after he started speaking about it, that since the problem of 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬 started, the 专讘讬 doesn't sleep at night, just can't sleep. It was on his mind and his heart constantly. And he started 砖讟讜专注诪讬谞讙 and talking, he said that by every 讞转讜谞讛 we should speak about 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬, and he spoke 讘专讘讬诐, in public, by a 诇状讙 讘注讜诪专 parade in front of 10,000 children. He spoke, obviously it wasn't for the children, but he made a public, a public 诪讞讗讛 against the government, when it came to translate the 砖讬讞讛... He told Rabbi Hecht not to translate that part, but he said it in public. And then every 驻讗专讘专注谞讙注谉 the 专讘讬 spoke about it, and anybody who came to the 专讘讬, he spoke about all kinds of things, all about this problem of 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬. And the 专讘讬 explained, and this is what I'm going to try to explain, what the 专讘讬 spoke about many of the times, and the way it explains 讞住讬讚讜转, why the 专讘讬 chose this topic, that by him this was the worst in the world. There were many other problems that came up in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, and other 专讘谞讬诐 also spoke about those. For instance, at that time there was a problem with 谞讬转讜讞讬 诪转讬诐, which they they would autopsies, autopsies without the permission of the of the people, and they would do it to religious Jews against 讛诇讻讛, and a lot of 专讘谞讬诐 spoke about it, and the 专讘讬 also many times mentioned it. Then there were problems with the 爪讘讗, with taking girls to the army, which many spoke about, and the 专讘讬 did also. But nevertheless, the 专讘讬 did not speak so strongly and so much heart on anything as much as he spoke about 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬. Why? And the 专讘讬 explained it like this, that when we have all kinds of other problems, they are all within the framework of Jews. They're within the 讛讙讘诇讜转, they're within the the realm, they're within the borders of a 讬讬讚. This problem crosses the line. This problem crosses the border. Here we are dealing with accepting into 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 and mixing with 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 of people who are not Jewish. Everything else is within Jews. You have a better Jew, a Jew who does more 诪爪讜转, does less 诪爪讜转, a Jew who had a problem, a Jew who does 注讘讬专讜转, they have all kinds of things, but they're all Jews. And here we are talking about bringing in non-Jews, people who are not considered Jews, and mixing them in into 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. The 专讘讬 explained that that is already crossing the border, that's going beyond the 诪讞讬爪讜转, and therefore this is the worst thing. And here we go into the whole concept of what is the difference between a 讬讬讚 and a non-Jew. There's a 诪讚专砖 that says that the 讬讬讚谉 are compared to oil. 诪讛 讛砖诪谉, and the 专讘讬 quoted this 诪讚专砖 constantly, 诪讛 讛砖诪谉 讗讬谞讜 诪转注专讘 注诐 砖讗专 诪砖拽讬诐, just like oil does not mix with any other liquid, so does the Jewish nation not mix with any other people. You can't mix them. Just like oil, whatever you'll do, it'll always float on top, the 讬讬讚谉 do not mix. And therefore, by doing that, you're going away, you're changing from you're taking one category and saying that it's a different category, when really they can't mix, and you can't bring in non-Jews into the Jewish nation when they're not really Jews, and they didn't convert 讻讛诇讻讛, as I will explain soon what that means. And we 讟讗拽注 see that 讗诇讟注专 专讘讬 brings, the 专讘讬 quoted it then too, the 讗诇讟注专 专讘讬 brings in 讗讙专转 讛转砖讜讘讛 in the 诪讛讚讜专讛 拽诪讗, he says that it's interesting that constantly in the 讙诪专讗 or in 驻讜住拽讬诐, when we talk about Jews and non-Jews, so the worst Jew is referred to as 驻讜砖注讬 讬砖专讗诇. A 驻讜砖注 讬砖专讗诇 means a bad Jew. The best 讙讜讬 is called 讞住讬讚讬 讗讜诪讜转 讛注讜诇诐, the 讞住讬讚讬 讗讜诪讜转 讛注讜诇诐, the righteous non-Jews, the righteous of the nations. So as good as he is, he still remains 讗讜诪讜转 讛注讜诇诐, still a 讙讜讬. And a Jew, as bad as he is, he's still considered a 讬砖专讗诇. Like the 讙诪专讗 said, 讬砖专讗诇 讗祝 注诇 驻讬 砖讞讟讗 讬砖专讗诇 讛讜讗. A 讬讬讚, even though he sins, he's still a 讬讬讚. You can't cross that border, you can't cross that line. How will I explain it? We know
what we say in 讚讗讜讜注谞注谉, 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 it's part of the 砖诪讜谞讛 注砖专讛, we say 讗转讛 讘讞专转谞讜 诪讻诇 讛注诪讬诐, You chose us from all the nations. And every day in 讚讗讜讜注谞注谉 right before 拽专讬讗转 砖诪注 we say 讜讘谞讜 讘讞专转 诪讻诇 注诐 讜诇砖讜谉, You chose us from all nations. What does that mean? We say it that we are the chosen people. Now this is not to be chauvinistic, so we say we're the chosen people, but what we're saying is because the 转讜专讛 tells us that. And I just want to mention one thing as an introduction to what I'm going to say further, just in case somebody who will hear this that will need this introduction. What I'm going to say further, I will not prove. In other words, I'm not going to try to prove that all this is true. Why not? Because what I'm going to say is taken from the 转讜专讛, and since the 转讜专讛 says it, it is true. If someone doesn't believe it, then he has a different problem. Then you have to come to a different class and discuss to prove that the 转讜专讛 is true. Fine! But that's not a question about this issue, then it'll be a question about 砖讘转, it'll be a question of anything. What we're discussing now is we're holding at a stage where whatever it says in the 转讜专讛 is true, and therefore what I'm going to say, even though I will not be able to prove it directly to this 注谞讬谉, but if we only accept what the 转讜专讛 says as being true, then what I'm going to say is true. The 转讜专讛 says 讗转讛 讘讞专转谞讜 诪讻诇 讛注诪讬诐 and that we were chosen by 讛砖诐 as a chosen nation. That means means that what people say, and I'll have to explain it right away because it doesn't sound so good, like what is said especially in United States that all people were created equal, it is not true. Not all people were created equal. 讬讬讚谉 were not created equal. 讬讬讚谉 are chosen people, but I have to explain it. It doesn't mean 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐 like others who said that we are chosen and therefore we have to exterminate the rest and the rest have to be slaves. 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, God forbid, that's not what we're saying. We're saying that all people in the world are special and great and fine and good and they have their mission in life, but we have something on top of that. But it doesn't make it easier for us, on the contrary, because we have that something special, we have a greater responsibility. We have more things that we have to do. I think it has a 诪砖诇 in the 诪讚专砖 between the 讬讬讚谉 and 讙讜讬诐, it says that a person who why, no it says 诇讙讘讬 this, why is it that we are not allowed to eat certain insects and certain kinds of animals and 讙讜讬诐 are? So it says an example: There are certain people who have very delicate stomachs and they can't eat coarse food and certain people could. The 讬讬讚谉 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 created more delicate and therefore we have certain 讛诇讻讜转, certain things we can't do. Why? Because we were created more delicate. But not that we're trying to knock somebody else, we're just saying that we have something special. What is the 驻砖讟 that we were chosen by 讛砖诐? What the 驻砖讟, 讗转讛 讘讞专转谞讜, we were chosen? The word choice, the word choice, the way it's explained in 讞住讬讚讜转, choice means that the person who chose it's all up to him. If a person does something to deserve a certain thing, then he is not chosen. If someone picks somebody to come some place let's say, because this person is better than others, then in that case it's not that I chose, I had no choice. Just for instance if a person has a choice of an apple and an orange, and he likes an apple, so he picks the apple. Is that called choice? He had no choice. Either this is an apple, this is an orange, he wants that. Choice means that there is nothing within the chosen thing that indicates or pushes for me to pick it. That means it's free choice from my side. When it says that the 讗讬讬讘注专砖讟注专 chose us, it means it was not because of something that we did that He made us special, it's because of His side. It's not because we are better, we are on our own better, we we are we worked better and therefore 讛砖诐 says, \"Well, as a reward I'll give you.\" It is 讛砖诐, because of Himself, decided that these people will be chosen. We find an interesting thing, we find by 讗讘专讛诐 讗讘讬谞讜, it says that 讜讬讗诪专 讛砖诐 讗诇 讗讘专诐, 讛砖诐 said to 讗讘专诐, 诇讱 诇讱 诪讗专爪讱, go from your land and go 讗诇 讛讗专抓 讗砖专 讗专讗讱. Now why did 讛砖诐 speak to 讗讘专讛诐 and ask him to go? When we learn 讞讜诪砖 and we look at 驻专砖讛 before 诇讱 诇讱, it's mentioned that 讗讘专讛诐 was born and it doesn't say that 讗讘专讛诐 was a special person. And all of a sudden the 驻专砖讛 starts 讛砖诐 spoke to 讗讘专讛诐, go 诪讗专爪讱. Why did 讛砖诐 speak to 讗讘专讛诐? We don't know yet that 讗讘专讛诐 was special. Look at the 驻专砖讛 before, 驻专砖转 谞讞, it says 讛砖诐 spoke to 谞讞, but before that, it says that 谞讞 was good, 讜谞讞 诪爪讗 讞谉 讘注讬谞讬 讛砖诐, 谞讞 was good and fine, and therefore we understand that 讛砖诐 spoke to 谞讞. Why did He choose to speak to 谞讞? Because 谞讞 was a special person. So why doesn't it say by 讗讘专讛诐 that 讗讘专讛诐 was special and then we understand why 讛砖诐 spoke to him? So the 专讘讬 explains the 驻砖讟 is to teach us that the reason 讛砖诐 spoke to 讗讘专讛诐 is not as a result of 讗讘专讛诐's behavior, since he was good, so 讛砖诐 chose him, that means that the specialty of 讗讘专讛诐, who is the first 讬讬讚, is because 讗讘专讛诐 was good, so it comes as a result of him. So therefore, if somebody is not so good, doesn't have that specialty, it's not so. It came directly because 讛砖诐 decided, 讛砖诐 decided to choose. And in 讞住讬讚讜转 it says even deeper than that, that when they speak about choice, choice means that it's not because of any reason that the person has. Then why did he choose? Because essentially there is a connection. This need a lot of explanation what the 注谞讬谉 of 讘讞讬专讛 讞讜驻砖讬转 is, in 讞住讬讚讜转 it's one of the hardest subjects, but nevertheless, this is the 驻砖讟 讛砖诐 chose us, and 讛砖诐 made us different than He made other people. And this is the 驻砖讟 that we always know that the 诪注诇讛 of a 讬讬讚 over a 讙讜讬, the difference of 讬讬讚 and a 讙讜讬 is that a 讬讬讚 has a 谞砖诪讛. And a 讙讜讬 doesn't. A 讙讜讬 has a force of life. Every person has what we call a 谞驻砖, a life. That every human being has. He has a life. Because if you don't have a life, you don't live, you're not You see a person who's not alive also has a body. What he's missing is that force of life. So every human being has a force of life. But that force of life is just a plain 谞驻砖. But a 谞驻砖 讛讗诇拽讬转, a godly soul, that only a 讬讬讚 has. And when we say 讛砖诐 chose us, that means 讛砖诐 put into us a special 谞驻砖, a godly a godly 谞驻砖, and it says in 转谞讬讗 that that is a 讞诇拽 讗诇讜拽讛 诪诪注诇 诪诪砖. 讛砖诐 took a part of himself and put it into every single 讬讬讚. And that's the life that he gave to every single 讬讬讚. And let me explain it. What it means is like this: 讛砖诐 created the world, that's the creation, and the world goes on naturally, and there are certain things in the nature of the world that the the
world needs. Now the world, people, in order to be alive, need this power, this source of life, this power of life that's there. So a 讬讬讚 also, in order for a 讬讬讚 who is a human being, in order for him to be alive, you need that source of life. And that's as far as it goes. There's no more need. As far as nature is concerned, in order to exist and to live, you need the 谞驻砖. That's all. 讛砖诐 says, in a 讬讬讚 I put in a life which is not part of the nature. In other words, as far as nature is concerned, you don't need it. You could live and exist without that. And nevertheless, 讛砖诐 says, I will make you alive from a different angle, because of a different reason. I put into you another force of life that will make you live, but that's beyond nature. That's not because you need it for the nature. So 诇讛讘讚讬诇 a 讙讜讬, who's a human being, and he is a human being is the highest race of the creation, has the force of life that's needed 诪爪讚 the nature of the world to exist. But a 讬讬讚 has an extra force of life that makes him alive, not because of that, but because 讛砖诐 put in something which is beyond the creation. For the creation's sake, you wouldn't need it. That's the 驻砖讟, he has a 谞驻砖 讗诇讜拽讬转, he has something godly, and it's called a 谞驻砖. It's not that we say that a person has person is alive, then he has something extra within him. That extra thing is called 谞驻砖. It's 谞驻砖 讗诇讜拽讬转, that means it gives him life. But the question, why do we need it? If we are alive just because we are human beings, so why do we need this extra thing? Naturally, we 讟讗拽注 don't need it. But 讛砖诐 says, I put into you an extra life force, an extra life force which is not needed for the nature, and I'm giving it to you special as part of me. And because of that, it says in 转谞讬讗, there are certain things that we that is by a 讬讬讚, that exists by a 讬讬讚, and doesn't exist by a 讙讜讬, because he has this special 谞驻砖. And when they translated the 转谞讬讗 into English, so the first time when they translate, there was no problem. But when they translated it in England, the Soncino translation, there was a big problem in translating that paragraph. And that is, in the end of the first 驻专拽 转谞讬讗 he explains the difference between a 讬讬讚 and a non-Jew. And he says like this: A non-Jew, the best things he will do, it still always has this feeling that he's doing it for himself. It's always for a selfish reason. While by a 讬讬讚, a 讬讬讚 is able to do something for no selfish reason. Even when a 讙讜讬 will help somebody, and he will put his money on the line, and he will put his his life on the line, it's still for a selfish reason. And he quotes the 讙诪专讗, it's from a 讙诪专讗, it's 讗讬谞讜 讗诇讗 诇讛转讬讬讛专. But a 讬讬讚, doesn't mean every 讬讬讚 is like that, but a 讬讬讚 is able to do something just because it's the right thing to do, for no selfish reason. And
when they wanted to translate this, so they said, you can't, this is going to cause anti-Semitism. How could you say such a thing? You're knocking the 讙讜讬诐, you're saying that they do things for selfish reasons, etc., etc. And look how many people we had, and there were many 讙讜讬诐 讟讗拽注 that helped 讬讬讚谉 and put their life on the line, and they sacrificed themselves to help other people. So how could we say such a thing, that the 讙讜讬诐, whatever they do is selfish, and we 讬讬讚谉 are able to do things which are not selfish? But the 驻砖讟 is, I remember the 专讘讬 wrote to England and they told him to answer. Anyway, there were different answers written in different papers, but one of the answers that was given then is a very simple one: It's only natural, it's only natural, it can't be different, for a person to do whatever he does to be selfish. It is impossible naturally not to be selfish. There are many degrees. Some people are very selfish and everything's for himself. Some people are not so selfish. But there has to be some type of selfishness in the person, whatever you do. It's against nature not to do it, not to be like that. Like, an example, if somebody sometimes will see someone hurt on the street and is bleeding, and they'll run over and help him. And sometimes he could say, \"I just can't stand the sight of blood.\" Now, that's very good, 讘专讜讱 讛砖诐, 讛诇讜讜讗讬 most people like that and would help people. But after all, there is this feeling of \"I can't stand the sight of blood.\" That's one 讚专讙讗. You can have people finer than that, but it's impossible to undress oneself from himself. It is only natural. So we're not 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐 trying to knock the 讙讜讬诐 saying that they are bad or they do, what they're doing is only normal. There are a lot of levels in that, but it's only normal. What it says in 转谞讬讗 is that a 讬讬讚 is able to be abnormal. A 讬讬讚 is able to have a certain could do something which is not for any selfish reason, and it makes no sense. The question is opposite, not like they ask, how could you say whatever a 讙讜讬 does is selfish? That's not the question, that's normal. Doesn't mean selfish for bad reasons, but it's always yourself that is involved. The question is how could it be the opposite? How is it possible for a person to do something which is not selfish at all? And the answer is because the 讗讜讬讘注专砖讟注专 put into a 讬讬讚 something that's beyond nature. So naturally it can't be, beyond nature it could be. It's one of the answers given to a famous question that also these are the questions that the Bible critics and anti-Semites always bring up. It
says in 转讜专讛 you're not allowed to take interest, not allowed to take interest when you lend money. In 讛诇讻讛 you find ways to do it, but as long as it's within the 讛诇讻讛, otherwise you can't take interest. Then the 驻住讜拽 says 讜诇谞讻专讬 转砖讬讱. From the 讙讜讬, you should take interest. So they always say, \"Ah, look at these Jews that from the 讙讜讬, and that's what all these Jews do. They try to schlep money from the 讙讜讬诐, and the 讙讜讬 you have to you have to take interest.\" That's not the 驻砖讟. Normal economy, normal way of life is to take interest. That's the way. Imagine if there wouldn't be any interest, the whole economy wouldn't work. It's only natural to take interest. We're not saying, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, something against the 讙讜讬诐 that we do something back to them, take, schlep the money out of them. That's not the 驻砖讟. You have to with a 讙讜讬, since he is a normal human being, so you have to behave normally, naturally. The 转讜专讛 says to the 讬讬讚, \"Since you, 讬讬讚, you are beyond nature, you have an ability to be abnormal. So you I want not to take interest.\" \"Ay, what's going to happen to the economy?\" 讛砖诐 says, \"That's the question of nature. I'll take care of it.\" But it's not that, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, we're knocking somebody, we're just saying that a 讬讬讚 has within himself a 讻讞 of 讛砖诐 which is beyond nature. So if we want to put it in other words, the difference, the way it's explained, between a 讬讬讚 and a non-讬讬讚 is basically the difference between nature and beyond nature. Or if we want to put other words, the difference between creation and the Creator. Creation is the nature, the Creator is 讛砖诐. So just like there's a difference between the Creator and the creation, and that's the difference is so great, as extreme as you find of different things, this is the greatest extreme: nature, creation and the Creator. That's the difference between a 讬讬讚 and a 讙讜讬. And a 讙讜讬 is part of creation, fine part of creation, the most sensible part of creation, but part of the creation. And a 讬讬讚 is not part of the creation. He has within himself part of the creation too, but he has in addition to that something which is completely beyond creation, something that 讛砖诐 put in. Like I said, ask me to prove it, I can't prove it. They do say we sometimes we see 讬讬讚谉 do things which are not normal, good things, they go on 拽讬讚讜砖 讛砖诐, they give up their life for things. But you still can't prove it. Someone can say, prove it, that to show that this is what a 讬讬讚 is. Can't prove it. But if we believe in the 转讜专讛, this is what the 转讜专讛 says: a 讬讬讚 is beyond creation. And therefore, what comes out from here comes out like this. We
always know that in the creation we have four categories. The 专诪讘状诐 says, everyone knows four categories. The four categories are like this: 讚讜诪诐, 爪讜诪讞, 讞讬, 讜诪讚讘专. 讚讜诪诐 are the unmovable objects, 爪讜诪讞 is the plant life, 讞讬 is the animal life, and 诪讚讘专 is the human race, the speakers, we're the human race. So we know there are four. In truth, there are not four, there are five: there is 讚讜诪诐, 爪讜诪讞, 讞讬, 诪讚讘专, and the Jews, the 讬讬讚谉. The 讬讬讚谉 are not just another part amongst people. Since we're explaining that the 讬讬讚谉 have this extra 谞砖诪讛 which makes them beyond nature, then this is another category in itself. It's like we would say, we have the 讚讜诪诐, 爪讜诪讞, 讞讬, 诪讚讘专, and then we have a power of the 讘讜专讗, the Creator. The Creator put into us something that is beyond nature. If we accept that, and we all know this is true because it says in the 转讜专讛, then automatically we come to one conclusion: that the whole concept of being a 讬讬讚 is not within at all within the realm of human beings. This means like this: no human being could come and describe what's a Jew. Since a Jew means something spiritual beyond nature, so nobody who is within the nature can come with a description, because who knows what goes on in the world, higher worlds, in the Creator? The only one that could make up who is a Jew is only 讛砖诐. See, if we don't believe in this, then we don't believe 讘讻诇诇 the whole concept of what's a Jew. Then a Jew and a 讙讜讬 is like an American and an Englishman, that's all. But when we talk about a Jew and a 讙讜讬, we're talking about a religious concept, a spiritual concept. So no Nobody is able to give his opinion in the spiritual concept. The only one that could give the opinion is the one that's spiritual, is 讛砖诐 himself. And therefore, being that a 讬讬讚 and a 讙讜讬 are two different categories completely, it is naturally, normally, impossible to change from a 讬讬讚 to a 讙讜讬 or from a 讙讜讬 to a 讬讬讚. You can't. It's like saying, and I hate to say this example, I don't really mean this example, but I'm saying it, imagine that somebody want to change from an animal to a human being. You just can't, or from a human being, make him into an animal, you can't. They're two different categories, they're two different things. You could change a person, looks like this, looks like that, but you can't change categories. You can't take an animal, change him into into grass. You can't change categories. Impossible. Normally, it's impossible to do it. And therefore, it is impossible for a Jew to become a 讙讜讬. It's impossible. The 讙讜讬 could do what he wants, he could say sprinkle water, he could do everything, it can't be. You can't change. That's why they have the
famous joke that they say, it's a famous joke, I'm sure everyone knows it, that once this 讬讬讚 砖诪讚'讟, the 讬讬讚 converted and he became a Christian or a Catholic or a priest. And they have it, I don't know exactly when, they have on Friday, a certain Friday you can't eat meat, you have to eat fish. So once this guy who converted, was on that Friday that you're not allowed to eat meat, he was eating meat. So the 讙诇讞, the priest happened to come into his house that day, and he sees him eating meat, he says, \"Hey, I thought you were a good 讙讜讬, how come you're eating meat?\" So he says, \"You know, I'm not eating meat.\" \"What do you mean you're not eating? I see you eating meat.\" \"I took some water and I sprinkled, I said, 'Fish, fish, fish, fish, fish,' it turned into fish. That's exactly what you did to me. You took some water, you sprinkled and you said, I don't know what they said, '讙讜讬, 讙讜讬, 讙讜讬, 讙讜讬,' turned into a 讙讜讬. It's exactly what you did, the same thing here. I turned it into fish.\" He said, \"What are you talking about? It's meat.\" \"No, it became fish.\" Same thing here, you can't make a 讙讜讬 should turn into a 讬讬讚. A 讬讬讚, a 讬讬讚 should turn into a 讙讜讬, you can't, impossible. Now in truth, according to this, you can't do the opposite either. You can't make a 讙讜讬 turn into a 讬讬讚. And the truth is, you can't. The
only one that could do it is 讛砖诐. 讛砖诐, he is the one that made up this whole thing of 讬讬讚 and the 讙讜讬. He's the one that put into the 讬讬讚 the 谞砖诪讛, so 讛砖诐, he could do it. He could make, if he wants, from a 讬讬讚 to a 讙讜讬, or from a 讙讜讬 to a 讬讬讚, he could do it, but no one else. And therefore, 讛砖诐 himself gave us the 讛诇讻讜转 and he said, if you follow these and these and these points, you will change this 讙讜讬 into a 讬讬讚. It's as if 讛砖诐 would say, you will change this animal into a person. Yes, he could do it. 讛砖诐 is not limited. Anybody who will come with his own ideas of how to change, automatically it's a contradiction in itself. The moment a person, a human being, will decide, I decided how to change a 讙讜讬 to a 讬讬讚, that's a contradiction. Then obviously he doesn't know what it means a 讬讬讚 and a 讙讜讬. Since the whole concept is an impossibility, so it's only possible by 讛砖诐. So 讛砖诐, only 讻讛诇讻讛, so this is the reason why only 讻讛诇讻讛 is it possible to become a 讙专. Then, just like 讛砖诐 said that if you're born from a Jewish mother or whatever 讛砖诐 said concerning the 讬讬讚, so a 讙讜讬 becomes the same way. And this person is a 讬讬讚 like anybody else. But it's only because 讛砖诐 did it, but without 讛砖诐, it's an impossibility. You can't you can't do it. There is another possibility, the truth. There's another possibility similar a little bit where a 讬讬讚 could turn into a 讙讜讬. Not a 讬讬讚 诪诪砖, there is an exception to it, but again, why is it? Because 讛砖诐 said so. And that is the case when a Jewish man marries a non-Jewish woman. Or as for that sake, a Jewish man has relations with a non-Jewish woman and had a child, that child is a 讙讜讬. Now, 讛砖诐 set up the law that a child, whether he's a Jew or a 讙讜讬, follows the mother. And the 专诪讘状诐 explains this, and the 专诪讘状诐 says like this, that even though the 讗讬住讜专, the 注讘讬专讛 of having relations with a non-Jewish woman is not as strict as many other forbidden relations, they are much worse, a married woman or a sister or other relatives are much worse in the level of of punishment and things like that. Nevertheless, he says there is something that happens when you marry a non-Jewish woman that doesn't exist by any other of the forbidden relations. As a matter of fact, it doesn't exist by any other 注讘讬专讛, any other 注讘讬专讛 in the world. And he says what is it? Here you are crossing the line. Every 注讘讬专讛, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, a 讬讬讚 does, so he 诪讞诇诇 砖讘转, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, so he's still a 讬讬讚. He didn't do anything to cross the line of a 讬讬讚 and 讙讜讬. When you have relations with a 讙讜讬讛 and a child is born, then you took a part of a Jew and you turned it into a 讙讜讬. It became a 讙讜讬. There are other reasons in this 注讘讬专讛 that it's worse, but that's not only in this 注讘讬专讛, that's only any 注讘讬专讛 with relations because that's when it comes to that, the whole person's essence is involved, every 注讘讬专讛 Only a certain part of the body is involved. Your hand, when you hurt somebody, it's the hand. You're 诪讞诇诇 砖讘转 with a hand, or any 注讘讬专讛 you do, it's a certain part of the body. There's no 注讘讬专讛 that your whole being is involved. This is a type of an 注讘讬专讛 that your whole being is involved. But that is true concerning any 注讘讬专讛 that involves marriage and relation. But in this part, it's only by in this 注谞讬谉, the other part, which is the idea of taking a 讬讬讚, part of a 讬讬讚, and that is transformed into a 讙讜讬. The child is a 讙讜讬. And the
truth is, even if there is no child, it becomes part of a 讙讜讬. It says 讘讻诇诇讜转, for every relation, spiritually there is a child, a spiritual child born, and 讘讻诇诇 you give of yourself to a 讙讜讬, and it becomes part of the 讙讜讬, that means that you crossed the border and you gave away part of a 讬讬讚 to a 讙讜讬, which is the only possibility of changing 讬讬讚, part of 讬讬讚 into a 讙讜讬. But otherwise, a 讬讬讚 should 砖诪讚 讝讬讱, he can't, a 讬讬讚 砖诪讚 讝讬讱, he can't can't convert. Impossible. And the other way, it could happen only because the 转讜专讛 says, and only the way the 转讜专讛 says. And therefore, 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛, when to convert according to 讛诇讻讛, is logically the only thing that to make a a 讙讜讬 turn into a 讬讬讚. When the 讙讬讜专 takes place, then this person who's 诪讙讬讬专 is in no way less, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, 讬讬讚 than the person who was born a 讬讬讚. There is no difference. Because who made the person who's born a 讬讬讚? It's not a natural thing. It's, to begin with, a spiritual given by 讛砖诐. The same 讛砖诐 said that if he's 诪讙讬讬专 according to this way, he is a Jew. 讙专 砖谞转讙讬讬专 讻拽讟谉 砖谞讜诇讚 讚诪讬. A 讙专, a convert that converted, is like a child that's born, and he's a new person, and that moment he's a Jew like anybody else. There's a
famous letter that the 专诪讘状诐 wrote to 专讘讬谞讜 注讜讘讚讬讛 讛讙专. There was this great person in the 专诪讘状诐's time, his name was 专讘讬谞讜 注讜讘讚讬讛 讛讙专, and he wrote to the 专诪讘状诐 a letter saying, \"I feel very bad every time I remind myself that I'm a 讙专.\" And he wrote why. He says, \"Because 讬讬讚谉 are 诪转讬讞住, they have their lineage going back to 讗讘专讛诐, 讬爪讞拽, and 讬注拽讘, and who do I go? So I feel bad.\" So the 专诪讘状诐 answers him, \"Don't feel bad,\" he says. \"Because 讗谞讜 诪转讬讞住讬诐 诇讗讘专讛诐, 讬爪讞拽, 讜讬注拽讘. We, 讟讗拽注, are 诪转讬讞住, our 讬讞讜住 is to 讗讘专讛诐, 讬爪讞拽, and 讬注拽讘. But the 讙专讬诐 are 诪转讬讞住 诇诪讬 砖讗诪专 讜讛讬讛 讛注讜诇诐. They're 诪转讬讞住 to 讛砖诐 directly. So you have direct, intimate connection. Our connection to 讛砖诐 goes through the 讗讘讜转, it goes all the way, all these years back, and then it goes to 讗讘专讛诐, and 讗讘专讛诐 started with with with the 谞砖诪讛, and that's where we come. But you come directly from 讛砖诐. There's nothing to be afraid of. There's nothing that you should feel you're missing.\" The same 谞砖诪讛 that 讛砖诐 gave to a 讬讬讚, or gives to a 讬讬讚 when he's born, born 讬讬讚, he puts into the 讙专. But in the 谞砖诪讛 we find, and this is in 讞住讬讚讜转 full, but in the 谞砖诪讛 we find when 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉 was created and 讛砖诐 blew the 谞砖诪讛 in, it says in 转谞讬讗, it says in 讞讜诪砖, that he blew the 谞砖诪讛 in. So in 转谞讬讗 he brings from the 讝讜讛专, right in the beginning of 转谞讬讗, second 驻专拽, that why does he use the term blew? 讛砖诐 doesn't have a mouth, 讛砖诐 doesn't blow. And when it comes to other things, it says 讛砖诐 said. How did he create the world? He said, let there be light, let there be this. Here it says he blew. What's that blowing? 讛砖诐 doesn't speak, 讛砖诐 doesn't blow. 讗诇讗 诪讗讬, we use words just for us to be able to relate to, so we have to have words from our world. So why choose a word blowing? So he says like this: because the 讞讜诪砖 uses such words that we could relate to, but from these words we can understand the spiritual aspect of what was taking place. That the difference between speaking and blowing is that both of it gives out your energy, gives out your your life, but when you blow, you give out your real 驻谞讬诪讬讜转, part of really part of you. A person should blow, how long can a person blow? Blow. For a minute, and if he continues blowing, he'll die. What does that mean? His 谞驻砖, his whole energy comes out with blowing. When a person speaks, also, I can tell you that, you get tired. You get hoarse, I know, and you speak, and you speak, and eventually you have to stop. But it'll take a good few hours till you have to stop. You give out part of you. The 驻住讜拽 says, 谞驻砖讬 讬爪讗讛 讘讚讘专讜. Your 谞驻砖 comes out when you speak, it's true, especially when one speaks with heart, you know, it comes out. But it's not like blowing. Blowing is really, really your real essence. So
when 讛砖诐 put the 谞砖诪讛 into 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉, there he used the word blowing to show that this is the real essence of 讛砖诐 that he put into the into 讗讚诐. And that's the 谞砖诪讛 every 讬讬讚 has. I know people ask a question, if it was done to 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉, then it means all human beings. We bring the proof from 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉. 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉 was the father of all human beings. So why do we say it's only by a Jew? So the 讗专讬讝状诇 asks the question, the 讗专讬讝状诇 says that 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉 was a Jew. He was, he had a 谞砖诪讛 If he wouldn't have sinned with the 注抓 讛讚注转, all his descendants, all people would be Jews, everyone would have a 谞砖诪讛. Since he sinned, so 讛砖诐 said no, so from then on his children were not with 谞砖诪讜转, with this special 谞砖诪讛. And it came back starting a little bit with 讗讘专讛诐 讗讘讬谞讜. 讗讘专讛诐 讗讘讬谞讜 was the first Jew we call it, but not 100% yet. 讗讘专讛诐 讗讘讬谞讜 did not have the same 谞砖诪讛 that 讬讬讚谉 after the 转讜专讛 was given. When did 讛砖诐 choose us? When the 转讜专讛 was given. So from then on, we are able, we have this special 谞砖诪讛, whether we are born Jewish or 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛, or a person is 诪转讙讬讬专 讻讛诇讻讛. And if you follow the laws of 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛, then you're a Jew. And that was the whole fight of the 专讘讬. The 专讘讬 said then that by accepting Jews, 讙讜讬诐 who are not 诪转讙讬讬专 讻讛诇讻讛, accepting 讙讜讬诐, there's no such thing as 50/50. So he's not 100%, so he's a Jew, you could say he's not 100% 驻专讜诐, he's not doing 100%, but you can't be 50% Jew, a little bit Jew, there's no such thing. Or a Jew or a 讙讜讬. And if you're not 诪转讙讬讬专 讻讛诇讻讛, then you are 100% a 讙讜讬. And you can't mix that into 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. That's why the 专讘讬, this is crossing the borders, and this is completely I do want to go a little bit, we have a few more moments, into a few aspects concerning 讙讬讜专. What is 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛? What do we do when we're 诪转讙讬讬专? So we know that
when you ask any person who learns some 讙诪专讗, some 砖诇讞谉 注专讜讱, who'll be able to tell you that there are three things you have to do in order to become a 讙专, and that is 诪讬诇讛, 讟讘讬诇讛, 拽讘诇转 诪爪讜讜转. Or really the order should be 拽讘诇转 诪爪讜讜转, 诪讬诇讛, and 讟讘讬诇讛. Accepting upon yourself 诪爪讜讜转, to accept the 诪爪讜讜转 upon yourself, and if it's a male, circumcision, and then you have to go to the 诪拽讜讛. And it all has to be done in front of a 讘讬转 讚讬谉. In the time of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, there was something else he had to do, and that is to bring a 拽专讘谉. We learn out all these 讚讬谞讬诐 from the 讬讬讚谉, when the 讬讬讚谉 were 诪转讙讬讬专, when all the 讬讬讚谉 became Jews. When did the 讬讬讚谉 become Jews? By 诪转谉 转讜专讛. That's when 讛砖诐 gave them the 谞砖诪讛. So we know that when the 讬讬讚谉 left 诪爪专讬诐, which was the beginning, the preparation to the giving of the 转讜专讛, they all circumcised themselves. Then before 诪转谉 转讜专讛, 讛砖诐 said they should all go to the 诪拽讜讛. By 诪转谉 转讜专讛 they said all 谞注砖讛 讜谞砖诪注, we will do and we will hear, that means they accepted upon themselves the 诪爪讜讜转. And then it says in 讞讜诪砖 actually, in the 驻专砖讛 we read 砖讘转, that they brought 拽专讘谞讜转, so you have to bring a 拽专讘谉. Now,
it's interesting, just to note, that when the 专诪讘状诐 speaks about it, the 专诪讘状诐 says like this: When a 讙讜讬 wants to enter into 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, he has to do three things: he has to go through 诪讬诇讛, 讟讘讬诇讛, circumcision, going to the 诪拽讜讛, and a 拽专讘谉. And the 专讘讬 asks the question: Why doesn't the 专诪讘状诐 mention the main one, accepting 诪爪讜讜转? That's the first thing! So the 专讘讬 says very simple: Accepting the 诪爪讜讜转, that is the 讙讬讜专 itself. The other things are how to become a 讙专. This is the 讙讬讜专. You can't say, in order to become a 讙专 you have to accept 诪爪讜讜转. What the 专诪讘状诐 means to say, if a 讙讜讬 wants to accept 诪爪讜讜转, he wants to become a 讬讬讚, the main part of the 讬讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟 is to accept the 诪爪讜讜转. In order to do that, there are three conditions. Now, it would seem that now that we don't have a 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, what happens to that part of bringing a 拽专讘谉? We don't have a 拽专讘谉! So the 专诪讘状诐 says that all the 讙专讬诐 of all the times, 诪砖讬讞 will come, will all have to bring a 拽专讘谉. A 讙专 who doesn't bring a 拽专讘谉, the 专诪讘状诐 says in the time of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, cannot eat 拽专讘谞讜转, is still lacking, cannot eat 拽专讘谞讜转. You have to bring a 拽专讘谉 in order to able to eat 拽专讘谞讜转. Now, accordingly it would seem that nowadays, when we don't have a 拽专讘谉, we have no choice. So the
讙专 is still lacking something. Not his fault, there's no 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, and it's only concerning one aspect of 讬讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟, but one aspect of 讬讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟 he's still lacking. So a 讙专 is a little bit like he's 95% Jewish and 5% not, without makes no difference because we have no 拽专讘谞讜转 anyway, but that's what it sound like. So I remember once by 驻讗专讘专注谞讙注谉, when there was a guest from 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, who is very, very 讞砖讜讘注 person, a 诪砖驻讬注, a 专讗砖 讬砖讬讘讛, a very I mean he's a big 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐, who is a 讙专. And he was there by that 驻讗专讘专注谞讙注谉, and we know that since the 专讘讬 started speaking about learning 专诪讘状诐, for the first few years every 驻讗专讘专注谞讙注谉 he would speak on the 专诪讘状诐 of the day, one 讛诇讻讛 at least. The 专诪讘状诐 of that day happened to deal with the 讛诇讻讜转 of 讙专讜转, of conversion. And he was there by that 驻讗专讘专注谞讙注谉. And the whole thing that the 专讘讬 brought out by that 驻讗专讘专注谞讙注谉 was that when we don't have a 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, and we don't have 拽专讘谞讜转, then by not bringing the 拽专讘谉 you're not lacking anything. I don't want to go into the 诇诪讚讜转 of it, that a 讙专 now is a hundred percent. In other words, in the time of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, if he didn't bring a 拽专讘谉, he was 95% a 讙专 and he did everything fine, but he was still lacking one thing, some percentage concerning eating 拽专讘谞讜转. Now, the 专讘讬 brought out a 驻砖讟 and I remember it was printed in 诇拽讜讟讬 砖讬讞讜转, now it's not like that. And therefore the 专讘讬 says when the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 will be rebuilt, all the 讙专讬诐 will be able to eat 拽专讘谞讜转 without bringing the 拽专讘谉. They have to bring the 拽专讘谉 anyway because there's a 讛诇讻讛 you have to bring a 拽专讘谉. Other people have to bring 拽专讘谞讜转 for different reasons. A woman that gives birth has to bring a 拽专讘谉. That's nothing to do with her 讗讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟. The same thing here, he will have to bring a 拽专讘谉 as a 讛诇讻讛, but as far as the lack, even concerning eating 拽讚砖讬诐, you won't have to, because he is a hundred percent 讙专. And
not only, like I said before, a hundred percent 讙专, but the 专诪讘\"诐 says even more, there's an interesting 转讜住驻讜转 in 讙诪专讗. The 讙诪专讗 says a harsh statement. The 讙诪专讗 says, 拽砖讬诐 讙专讬诐 诇讬砖专讗诇 讻住驻讞转. That the 讙专讬诐 are very hard for the 讗讬讚谉, like a 住驻讞转. 住驻讞转 means a 讗谞讟砖注驻注谞讬砖, like some, you know, extra thing that extra growth to to make problems. There are 驻砖讟讬诐 in 讙诪专讗, what does that mean that the 讙专讬诐 are terrible for the 讗讬讚谉? So 转讜住驻讜转 says like this, that this person, I think his name is 专讘讬谞讜 讗驻专讬诐 讛讙专, one of the 讘注诇讬 讛转讜住驻讜转, one of the people in 转讜住驻讜转 writes like this, \"You know what the 讙诪专讗 means? Why is there a problem with the 讙专讬诐? Because the 讙专讬诐 are better than the Jews.\" When they become 讙专讬诐, they keep the 诪爪讜讜转 better. And what it causes is that 讛砖诐, 诇诪注诇讛, looks down and says and he complains to the 讗讬讚谉, \"Look, these people just came into the fold, and look how good they are, why can't you be like that?\" That's the problem, because they are even better to a certain degree. Then there are certain 讛诇讻讜转, simple small things which are touch upon in the 讙讚专 of 讙讬专讜转, converting a child, because we said before in order to convert you have to accept the 诪爪讜讜转. Now, a
child can't. So there is a 讚讬谉 that 讙专 拽讟谉 诪讟讘讬诇讬谉 讗讜转讜 注诇 讚注转 讘讬转 讚讬谉. A child, a 讙讜讬讬砖注 child, you could convert on the 讚注转, on the intentions of the 讘讬转 讚讬谉. And you could convert a child, it has to go through 诪讬诇讛, you have to circumcise the child if it's a boy, and you have to go through 讟讘讬诇讛, but the 诪爪讜讜转 he doesn't have to accept, because he's too small, his acceptance means nothing. And he is a Jew if the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 takes him. The only thing is when he becomes 讘专 诪爪讜讛 he has a 讘专讬专讛, a choice to say, \"I don't want.\" Then he could become a 讙讜讬. But otherwise he is a Jew. And this applies in many cases to adoption. When you adopt a child, and many people would rather adopt non-Jewish children than a Jewish child, for the simple reason that a Jewish child you don't know who the father is, maybe the child is a 诪诪讝专, you know, but if you adopt a non-Jewish child and you 诪讙讬讬专 the child, as they say, the expression goes in Yiddish, \"First is a 讻砖专'注专 讙讜讬, now is a 讻砖专'注专 讗讬讚.\" There's no problem, everything is fine. He's a 讻砖专 Jew, he's no problem. While others you don't know, you know, where he comes, so you have to find out. And since by adoption, at least in the United States, they don't allow you to find out, so you have a problem. The 专讘讬 actually writes that it shouldn't be like that, you should adopt a Jewish child, why take a non-Jewish, that's already a different discussion. But when it comes to it, what happens? The parents who adopt are 诪讙讬讬专 the child. And the child is a hundred percent Jewish. The
question is, what happens about adopting a non-Jewish child by a non-religious family? If that's okay. Now on one hand you could say since we don't need the child's acceptance, so what difference does it make which family? If the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 will 诪讙讬讬专 him, the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 could do it. So in truth it's possible. But many many people wouldn't don't, many 专讘谞讬诐, or most 专讘谞讬诐 wouldn't do it, because why bring a Jewish child into a family where he'll eat 讟专祝 and he'll be 诪讞诇诇 砖讘转? Why do it? So usually what they would do is if the parents agreed to start becoming 驻专讜诐, different different, Some say it wouldn't even help, because the only reason that helps by a child is the 讙诪专讗 says, because 讝讻讬谉 诇讗讚诐 砖诇讗 讘驻谞讬讜. Since you could, when it comes to do something good for a person, you don't need the person's agreement. And it's good to become a Jew, so you don't need, even though he cannot, he has no 砖讻诇 to agree, but the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 could agree for him. But if you take him into a family which is non-religious, who says it's good for him? You're, instead of helping him, you're being 诪讻砖讬诇 him, you're making him stumble over an 注讘讬专讛. And who knows what's going to happen. So that's a discussion in itself, whether adoption with a small a child by a non-religious family. But basically, going back to the point that the conversion, 讙讬讜专 makes a person to a regular 讗讬讚 only if it's done 讻讛诇讻讛 a hundred percent. If not, then it's complete 讙讜讬. And
basically, I would say, this is one of the major, major, most major problems in Jewish life in this century, the conversions. You know how many conversions go on 砖诇讗 讻讛诇讻讛, not according to 讛诇讻讛. Every Reform rabbi, every Conservative rabbi has every Sunday 10 conversions, 5 conversions. There are hundreds of thousands of people walking around who claim they're Jewish and they're really not Jewish. See, this is one of the things they used when it came to the whole tumah of 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬. The Reform came out against the 驻专讜诐, against the religious. And what did they say? The religious Jews don't consider us Jews! That's what they used to say. It was lies! We don't consider the conversions conversions! That's why I made a joke before that someone wrote that instead of asking the question, who is a Jew, should ask the question, who is a rabbi? Because the rabbis are the ones that make the conversions, and that's the question. Now, what is wrong just in short with the Reform conver- Reform conversion is nothing to begin with. I mean, they don't do anything, so it's nothing. The Conservative, many of them do it properly. They take to the 诪拽讜讛 and they do 诪讬诇讛. The main problem is this: you have to have a 讘讬转 讚讬谉 of three watching and the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 have to be 讻砖专 Jews, I mean religious people. And most and usually a Conservative rabbi, Conservative temple is not religious, so you don't have a 讘讬转 讚讬谉. Finished. Without a 讘讬转 讚讬谉, it's nothing. But there's another point. Even if the person himself, the three so-called rabbis are religious in their own personal life, it's still a problem. Because the 讛诇讻讛 is that if a person, the 讙专, the 讙讜讬, accepts upon himself all the 诪爪讜转 except one, one 诪爪讜讛 I don't accept, the whole 讙讬讜专 is nothing. You have to accept every 诪爪讜讛, even though he doesn't know every 诪爪讜讛 yet, but he has to say, I accept every single 诪爪讜讛. If he'll say clearly, I accept everyone ex- every 诪爪讜讛 except one, he's not a 讙专. If the Conservative are 诪讙讬讬专 and they don't accept everything properly, so the acceptance of the 诪爪讜转 of the 讙专 is according to the Conservative standards. So, 注诇 驻讬 讛诇讻讛, that's not a 讙专, that's not a 讙讬讜专, even if he be 驻专讜诐. But they try to say we don't accept, we don't hold them as Jews. That's, I mean that's that's not true. But this by the 专讘讬 was the worst thing in the world, this is the worst problem. And even though the 专讘讬 fought about the law in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, really what was the fight there was against the whole concept of conversion, which is the biggest 爪专讛 we have in the world now, in America and in the world, because now you don't know. The only thing that we do have now a little different than before, that the 讛诇讻讛 is that we don't we don't ask for a conver- Not like 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐 like the 讙讜讬诐 who go around trying to convert, we don't. But what happens if a person converted according to the Conservative? Then it is 讻讚讗讬 to try to convince the person to convert 讻讛诇讻讛. Why? Because since he thinks he's Jewish, he's going to make more 爪专讜转, he's going to get in- mixed with 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 and that's worse. So we do try to convince. And other cases also now we try to be 诪讬拽诇 and convince, but it has to be always within the framework of 讛诇讻讛. And if it's within the framework of the 讛诇讻讛, then it's done. And actually the 讙诪专讗 says, and this is what I'm going to finish, that the whole reason 讛砖诐 sent us into 讙诇讜转 讻讚讬 砖讬转讜住驻讜 注诇讬讛诐 讙专讬诐, to have more converts. 讞住讬讚讜转 has an explanation, it means to take out the holy sparks, 谞讬爪讜爪讜转 讛拽讚讜砖讛, but in simple 驻砖讟, the whole 讙诇讜转 was worth so we could have more people enter in 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. And therefore, we assumed then that the 专讘讬 fought for 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛, that was a very strong fight because it was 谞讜讙注 to 诪砖讬讞, because the 讙讬讜专 is one of the things that is going to bring 诪砖讬讞, and we hope it's going to happen 讘诪讛专讛 讘讬诪讬谞讜 诪诪砖. Yes. Yeah. And first of all, I want to give you a 讬讬砖专 讻讞 for this very inspiring, very fine 砖讬注讜专. And the discussion was what we spoke about. And we talked about the 谞砖诪讛. So the question is, examining or investigating the motivation of a 讙讜讬 to why he should want to become a become a 讬讬讚 注诇 驻讬 讛诇讻讛, a 讙讬讜专 讻讛诇讻讛, even with that. I mean, to do it to do it properly. Why would a why would a 讙讜讬, he doesn't have, he has to take on the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转 and so forth, or whatever, all these different obligations that a Jew has to. So the answer that the 讘讞讜专 gave me, which I wasn't aware of, that it's brought some place in 讞住讬讚讜转 that 讘注爪诐 that 讙讜讬 had had a had a connection to 讗讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟. Let me finish. Had had a connection to 讗讬讚讬砖拽讬讬讟, so I've never heard this before. But you didn't address this. I'm not I'm not criticizing, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, but I'm saying this is something that I never I really appreciate you bringing it up and I will address it now. It's not really a question, it's bringing up a point. It's bringing up a point which is 讻讚讗讬 to mention. Actually, it's not the source is not in 讞住讬讚讜转, the source is from the 讞讬讚状讗. And the 讞讬讚状讗 was the name of a great 爪讚讬拽, a great person and the 讞讬讚状讗 is an abbreviation of four words: 讞壮, 讬壮, 讚壮, 讗壮. His name was 讞讬讬诐 讬讜住祝 讚讜讚 讗讝讜诇讗讬. Or 讗讝讜诇讗讬. And he was a 住驻专讚讬砖注 讙讚讜诇, but he was known, he wrote many 住驻专讬诐 and so he writes like this: he asks a very interesting question. The expression in 讙诪专讗 always is 讙专 砖谞转讙讬讬专. If a 讙专 converted, etc., etc., whatever the 讙诪专讗 says. So he says, why does it say 讙专 砖谞转讙讬讬专, a 讙专 converted? When we talk about an 注讘讚, there is a 讚讬谉 that if a slave, a 讙讜讬讬砖注 slave is freed, and a lot of 讚讬谞讬诐, so the expression in 讙诪专讗 is 注讘讚 砖谞砖转讞专专, a slave that was freed. So what should they have said here? 讙讜讬 砖谞转讙讬讬专, a 讙讜讬 that converted. A convert that converted? So, the 讞讬讚状讗 writes that in truth, when a 讙讜讬 converts, it's because 讘注爪诐 he has a connection, there is some kind of spark of a 谞砖诪讛 in him, but it's not 讛诇讻讛'讚讬拽, which means legally, 讛诇讻讛'讚讬拽诇讬 revealed, and that's why he wants to be 诪讙讬讬专. And it 转讗拽注 says that all the 谞砖诪讜转 stood by 诪转谉 转讜专讛. First of all the 讬讬讚谉 who lived then, all the future 谞砖诪讜转 stood by 讛专 住讬谞讬, and it says even the 谞砖诪讜转 of the 讙专讬诐. So, these these people have a certain connection because their 谞砖诪讜转 were there, even though it wasn't put into them, but that's why they're called already 讙专 砖谞转讙讬讬专. And that's where the expression in Yiddish comes from, 讗址 讬讬讚 砖诪讚讟 讝讬讱 谞讬砖讟, 讗讜谉 讗址 讙讜讬 讝讗址讱 谞讬砖讟 诪讙讬讬专. A 讬讬讚 doesn't convert, and a 讙讜讬 is not 诪讙讬讬专. What's the 驻砖讟? That if a 讙讜讬 is 诪讙讬讬专, a 住讬诪谉 that first of all, he has some Jewish blood if you want to put it in simple terms, but it means more than that. There is something there, some connection, and that brings him to be 诪讙讬讬专. But to address the other point you mentioned that what brings a 讙讜讬 to be 诪讙讬讬专, so the 专讘讬 explains, it's based on different 住驻专讬诐, that we know that there is a concept of effort. A person does something, it's great. The more 诇驻讜诐 爪注专讗 讗讙专讗, the more effort you put in, the more reward you get. So the 专讘讬 says, the real person who puts in effort on his own is a 讙讜讬 who is 诪讙讬讬专. A 讬讬讚, as much as he works on his own, a 讬讬讚, as much as he works on his own, but he has a 谞砖诪讛. Since he has a 谞砖诪讛, it helps him out. So, even though on his own he tries to learn, he tries to 讚讗址讜讜谞注谉, he tries to do 诪爪讜转, but there is something there that is helping him. The 讙讜讬 who doesn't have that holy 谞砖诪讛, that holy soul, what's helping? Then it's completely on his own. So when it says 诇驻讜诐 爪注专讗 讗讙专讗, you get reward based on your effort, the real effort of your own is by a 讙讜讬 who is 诪讙讬讬专. And that's why who said this 诇驻讜诐 爪注专讗 讗讙专讗 in 驻专拽讬 讗讘讜转? Who said this this this saying that according to your effort, that's how much reward you get? 讘谉 讘讙 讘讙. So it says in 住驻专讬诐 that 讘讙 讘讙 is an abbreviation of 讘谉 讙专 and 讘谉 讙讬讜专转. He was a 讙专. And the 专讘讬 says, it says in other 住驻专讬诐 also that there's another person called 讘谉 讛讗 讛讗. They say it's the same person, because 讘讙, 讘壮 讙壮, adds up to five, 讛壮. 讘壮 and 讙壮 is five, two and three is five, so 讘谉 讛讗 讛讗. And he said it because that's 转讗拽注 the greatest effort. Even though we just said he has some kind of spark, but nothing compared to a 讬讬讚, and if he decides to change, then he 转讗拽注 gets reward for his change. Okay, yes, I will. Question is, if a person converts for the sake of marriage, is it a 讻砖专 conversion? Okay. Now the question is because, because there is a 讛诇讻讛 that if a person wants to convert for the sake of marriage, we don't accept him, that's the 讚讬谉. But this is only 诇讻转讞讬诇讛, we can't, we don't accept him, we do say no. But if he converted according to 讛诇讻讛, that means he sincerely accepted upon himself all the 诪爪讜转, and he went through 诪讬诇讛 and 讟讘讬诇讛, the circumcision and the 讟讘讬诇讛, 拽专讘谉 we don't have now, but he went through that, and he sincerely accepted the 诪爪讜转, even though it started off because of marriage, 注诇 驻讬 讛诇讻讛 he is a 讻砖专 convert, a 讻砖专 Jew, and he's in the category of a 讙专 爪讚拽, and 100%. Even though we don't accept 诇讻转讞讬诇讛, in other words, from the beginning if he comes, we will not accept him. And so we make 讘讻诇诇 hard for people to convert because we want to know he's sincere, but if we see he's sincere, even though it started, the conversion is good. That's a good question, but I think I've answered it in my talk. Once he converts, can he go back? No! Just like a Jew cannot become a 讙讜讬, a convert can't become a 讙讜讬, he's a Jew! The reason he became a Jew was because 讛砖诐 gave certain laws and the, it's 讛砖诐's doing. 讛砖诐 never did anything to make a 讬讬讚 to become a 讙讜讬, and therefore he can't. Yes. There is some comfort to that problem. Okay, they are two Okay, two parts to the question. Let's start with the first part, and then we'll do the second part. What is the first part? Oh, when 诪砖讬讞 will come, what's going to happen, since there is such confusion now, we don't know who is converted 讻讛诇讻讛, who's not, who's a 讗讬讚 and who is a 讙讜讬? Fortunately, there is a 讛诇讻讛. And again, everything has to be based on 讛诇讻讛, cuz this whole concept is a 转讜专讛 is a spiritual concept. The 讛诇讻讛 says like this, 诪砖驻讞讛 砖谞讟诪注讛 谞讟诪注讛. I'll translate. A family that got mixed in, 谞讟诪注讛 not like 讟讜诪讗讛 with a 讗,
谞讟诪注讛 with a 注, a family that got mixed in is mixed in and stays. That means if a family which is not Jewish and it got mixed into Jews and people think they're Jewish and no one knows they're not, they are 注诇 驻讬 讛诇讻讛 Jews. And when 诪砖讬讞 will come, it is clearly the 专诪讘状诐 says this to this question, 诪砖讬讞 will come, they will remain Jews if no one knows. And not because if no one knows, the expression is what you don't know doesn't hurt you, that's not the 驻砖讟. The 讛诇讻讛 is the same 讛诇讻讛 that said that in order to be Jewish you have to be born from a Jewish mother, in order to be Jewish you have to convert so and so, the same 讛诇讻讛 says if a family that's non-Jews, but claimed they're Jews and were accepted, and people think they're Jews, they remain Jews. That's a fortunate 讛诇讻讛, because if not, who knows 讟讗拽注? Sometimes you marry somebody and you never know. When the 专讘讬 spoke the first time, not the first, the first months or years about 诪讬讛讜 讬讛讜讚讬, the 专讘讬 brought that up. He says, you could never know what's going to happen. You yourself, those people who didn't want to work on it, you yourself are going to come to a problem that your child is going to marry somebody, and you'll find out the child is a 讙讜讬. And it 讟讗拽注 happened, not not long after that, not long I remember that 诪注砖讛.
There was a 转诇诪讬讚 in 讬砖讬讘讛, in a certain big 讬砖讬讘讛 in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. He was the best 讘讞讜专 in 讬砖讬讘讛, and I think he was even already a 讞转谉 to the 专讗砖 讬砖讬讘讛's daughter, I think. And then, before the 讞转讜谞讛, they found out that his mother was converted 砖诇讗 讻讛诇讻讛. Can you imagine how he felt? He was 诪诪砖 a 讙讜讬, and he had to go through conversion. I remember the way the story went then, that he found out on Friday and there was no chance to convert, and he was a good 讘讞讜专, and No, it was not that why No, not this. This was a Friday. But like this, as soon as he found out, and you don't have to wait by him for two years to convert, I mean, he was a real regular 驻专讜诪注专 讘讞讜专, a 注讬诇讜讬. So, he couldn't convert. You know what he had to do on 砖讘转? He had to switch the light on, because a 讙讜讬 is not allowed to keep 砖讘转. A 讙讜讬 has to be 诪讞诇诇 砖讘转, so he had to be 诪讞诇诇 砖讘转 that 砖讘转. Huh? He had Yeah, no, he was fine. His mother was converted 砖诇讗 讻讛诇讻讛. So he was really a 讙讜讬. And that's what that ever stemmed in. Now,
concerning your second question, 讘谞讜讙注 will the 讙讜讬诐 get up to 转讞讬讬转 讛诪转讬诐? Really, it's not part of our discussion here, but I will anyway, the 专诪讘状诐 says that 讞住讬讚讬 讗讜诪讜转 讛注讜诇诐 will get up to 转讞讬讬转 讛诪转讬诐. 转讞讬讬转 讛诪转讬诐 is when the resurrection of the dead. I got a message before to say, speak more English. So, it says, the 专诪讘状诐 says that even though 讘讻诇诇 only the Jews will get up to 转讞讬讬转 讛诪转讬诐, not the 讙讜讬诐, and the reason is very simple, because a 讗讬讚 has a 谞砖诪讛 and that 谞砖诪讛 is eternal, so it'll stay forever, but 讞住讬讚讬 讗讜诪讜转 讛注讜诇诐, the righteous non-Jews, will also get up. They will be in a separate chamber, they won't be the same level as we are, but they will also have 转讞讬讬转 讛诪转讬诐. That's connected. That's what it means. 注讜诇诐 讛讘讗 is 转讞讬讬转 讛诪转讬诐. His mother didn't He didn't convert. His mother converted. They didn't do a conversion for him at all. That the fact that they did a conversion He was a 讙讜讬, he needed conversion. No, you need to feel it. He had a 讛讟驻转 讚诐 讘专讬转. 讛讟驻转 No, he needed 讛讟驻转 讚诐
What happens if a 讙讜讬 who converts was 谞讬诪讜诇? You could have a 讙讜讬 that did Nowadays everyone does circumcision. So, you have to do 讛讟驻转 讚诐 讘专讬转. You have to take out a drop of blood 诇砖诐 讙专讜转, and then you have to go to the 诪拽讜讛 诇砖诐 讙专讜转. Yeah, he had a very good 讘专讬转 诪讬诇讛, because they didn't know. But they had to do 讛讟驻转 讚诐 讘专讬转. 讛讟驻转 讚诐 讘专讬转, and they had to go to the 诪拽讜讛 诇砖诐 讙讬讜专, then he was a 讗讬讚. But otherwise he was 诪诪砖 a 讙讜讬, because he wasn't converted. It was his mother that was so to speak converted 砖诇讗 讻讛诇讻讛. Three people. Only three, less than three is not a 讘讬转 讚讬谉, and it has to be during the day, not at night, and yeah. It's a big problem. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So you have to go, so whatever, you have to go back as far as you can, whichever way, so it makes a big problem. No, that 讟讗拽注 does make a big problem. Yes. You mean his husband she was married to him before? See, the fact that you said it's a local case here and all makes it puts it it's very hard for me to answer. But in truth is there is a 讛诇讻讛 that at first glance you cannot marry the person. But there are a lot of 转砖讜讘讜转 who explain it that it doesn't mean regular case and the circumstance and they find 讛讬转专讬诐. It is because the 讛诇讻讛 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 was made with a lot of conditions. So we always try to find out if it fits to the condition. But like this, the 讛诇讻讛 is that you can't. But with the conditions, many cases you do. And I know of many cases that they did, and it's not against 讛诇讻讛. No, the
first moment they find out that you ask him or they have a chance. If they don't, it's later that they could do it. Why do you ask about a 讘专 诪爪讜讛? Ask even if he does it on the second of 讘专 诪爪讜讛. The thing is that he was a child. 诇诪砖诇, I'll give you an example to make your question even harder. A child 砖讜讞讟. Okay, we'll say... Okay, I have a better 砖讗诇讛. If a 讙讜讬 touches wine, you can't drink the wine unless the wine is cooked, 讬讬谉 诪讘讜砖诇, and that applies also to a child, if a 讙讜讬讬砖 child touches. What happens if this child who was converted as a child touched wine, and then later he changed his mind when he became 讘专 诪爪讜讛, he said, \"I don't want\"? So all the wine he touched before is 讬讬谉 谞住讱? Yes, it is. Well, you just don't suspect that it's going to happen. The 讞讝拽讛 is that it's not going to happen. But if it does, it is. Cuz they found out. They found out. It's not because he lived, because no one knows. That's the 讛诇讻讛 is if no one knows. In other words, what you if we're afraid I'm going someone wants to marry somebody, maybe this is a Jew, he's a 讙讜讬. As long as you don't know, the 讛诇讻讛 is it's no problem. The moment it's found out, then he's a 讙讜讬. It's only if 谞讟诪注, the word 谞讟诪注 means mixed in without knowing. Now, I one second, we'll give the women a chance, too. No. Yes?
Before, there was no real concept of a Jew. See, the question is by 诪转谉 转讜专讛 the whole from the when the 转讜专讛 was given the law is that it goes after the mother. Before that, it wasn't a question of a Jew. Everything followed the father. Even now, everything follows the father, except that question. If the child is a 讻讛谉 or a 诇讜讬, the father. Everything follows the father, the 讬讞讜住. The only thing is concerning a Jew. Before 诪转谉 转讜专讛, there was no real thing as a Jew. The whole concept of a Jew started after the 转讜专讛 at the time of 诪转谉 转讜专讛. And then the 转讜专讛 said that it's only it follows the mother. Doesn't follow the mother... What? It's taken from a 驻住讜拽 in 驻专砖转 讜讗转讞谞谉. In 驻专砖转 讜讗转讞谞谉 the 驻住讜拽 says, I don't remember the 驻住讜拽 offhand, I think it says...讻讬 讬住讬专 讗转 讘谞讱 诪讗讞专讬. Anyway, that's a 驻住讜拽. From there 专砖状讬 says, from here we know that if your child, a child that's born from you with with a daughter from them is not my child, 讛砖诐 says, is not considered yours. If it's from them from your daughter, it is my child. So from that 驻住讜拽 the 讞讻诪讬诐 learn out that if the mother is Jewish, and the child is Jewish. That is, the Rebbe writes, this shows the Question is why is it that everything else goes after the father and whether you're a Jew or not goes after the mother? Well, this just shows the specialty of the women. I usually say this in women's classes, but when it's mixed I don't know what to say, cuz whatever I'm going to say is not going to be good. But it just shows the specialty of the mother, that when it comes to, we call it in 讞住讬讚讜转, 讙讬诇讜讬讬诐, individual specific things, that follows the father. You're a 讻讛谉, or a 诇讜讬, a 讬砖专讗诇. But when it comes to the essence, that's where the mother comes in. Essentially the mother. Now the 专讘讬 writes the reason is because the development of the child for nine months is in the mother. And therefore she is the one that makes the child as a person. And therefore what the the type of person he is, whether he is this category, that category, follows the mother. A
question regarding surrogate mothers, the latest thing you hear about. When you have the egg of a Jewish mother, the egg of a Jewish mother put into the body of a non-Jew, and is fertilized by a Jewish man, so what is this child? What would be the 讛诇讻讛? What would be... what would be the child? I won't answer that question. It's a good question. Nowadays, a surrogate mother, that if the real the real mother the first mother or whatever we call her, is Jewish, put into the mother into the womb of a non-Jewish, or the opposite, what is the child? See, all all these modern questions are not written in the 砖讜诇讞谉 注专讜讱, right? So how do we know how to 驻住拽谉 it? So you have to find sources in original places where they touch upon things which we could compare. And there is no place other except one 诪讚专砖. One 诪讚专砖 that they bring as a proof, and based on that they discuss, a 诪讚专砖 that says that really, I think it's concerning 讬讜住祝 or 讘谞讬诪讬谉, I don't remember which one, that really she started he started off in 讚讬谞讛's stomach and was switched by a 诪诇讗讱 into 专讞诇. And in order for 专讞诇 into 专讞诇, I think. Or maybe 诇讗讛's? I don't... No, nothing is... oh no, 诇讗讛's, I said 讚讬谞讛's. Like like we find... you're right. By 诇讗讛 into 诇讗讛 it was from 诇讗讛 and the 诪诇讗讱 switched it into 专讞诇. So and it's considered 专讞诇's children. So they want to base on that, but this is only a 诪讚专砖, and I explained last week you can't base 讛诇讻讛 on 诪讚专砖讬诐. This is a question that's going to... No. No. No, 讜讘讻诇诇 the 专讘讬... the 专讘讬 went into certain 讛诇讻讜转. No, for instance, this is just an example, the 专讘讬 wrote clearly in vitro you shouldn't do, he said 注诇 驻讬 讛诇讻讛 it's 讗住讜专. Now why and what, he didn't write, but there's certain 讛诇讻讜转 the 专讘讬 touched. To take into a test tube baby, not to do it. But the 专讘讬 did so this the 专讘讬 never touched, but and 驻讜住拽讬诐, I saw a whole article from different 专讘谞讬诐, it's a very complicated 砖讗诇讛 that I don't know who is going to take the responsibility of answering this question. I heard someone said something that if the 讙讜讬诐 will keep 砖讘转, 诪砖讬讞 will come. If the 讙讜讬诐 will keep? If the 讬讬讚谉 will keep. If the 讙讜讬诐 will keep 砖讘转... 讙讜讬诐? 讙讜讬诐?! It says, in one place it says if the 讬讬讚谉 will keep two 砖讘转讬诐, 诪砖讬讞 will come. In one place it says if 讬讬讚谉 will will keep one 砖讘转. Different opinions. But the 讙讜讬诐? 注讻讜状诐? There's a 诇砖讜谉 讛讙诪专讗 and it's a 砖讜诇讞谉 注专讜讱: 谞讻专讬 砖砖讘转 讞讬讬讘 诪讬转讛. A 讙讜讬 that keeps 砖讘转 is 讞讬讬讘 诪讬转讛. Yes. Regarding that that story about that about that that that 讘讞讜专, there's another story that a 诪注砖讛 砖讛讬讛 that told by a 专讘 some time ago. There was a Jew in 讘谞讬 讘专拽, and the 爪讬爪讬转 was there, he got a 讘注拽讬砖注 and a velvet 拽讗驻讗讟注 and and and the and the 驻讗讜转, I mean he put on the whole... And which 讬砖讬讘讛 did he learn? And that's one. So so my so my question is, my question is, so so like the answer before that the that the 讞驻抓 讞讬讬诐 brings, someone I mean with the 砖讬讟讛 that he was his 注爪诐 was... so his his 注爪诐 was was... Obviously. ...was a 讙讜讬. Well, there's one thing I can tell you: he didn't learn 讞住讬讚讜转. Obviously. Yes.
Can you discuss the Ethiopian Jews? Not in public. Not in public. Tell me after. Okay. Okay. I'll tell you. This is a very very touchy subject. Not for us here, but it's in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. I'll tell you what the problem there is. There is a big argument whether they're considered Jews or 讙讜讬诐. If they're considered Jews, it's worse than if they're 讙讜讬诐. Why? Because if they're Jews, then they're all 诪诪讝专讬诐. Why? Because they for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years did not keep the laws of 讙讬讟讬谉 and 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉, and marriage, and 讙讬讟讬谉, and therefore it's all mixed up, and that's a big 砖讗诇讛, and then they can't marry into 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 because a 诪诪讝专 cannot marry... somebody from, from 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. If they're 讙讜讬诐, then like I said before, no problem: 讻砖专 a 讙讜讬, a 讻砖专 a 讗讬讚. You know, you 诪讙讬讬专, and they're good. When they came to 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, there was a big problem. Now, they accepted them, but the 专讘谞讜转 came out, the Chief Rabbinate came out that they all have to go through 讙讬讜专 诇讞讜诪专讗. Means 诇讞讜诪专讗 that really they said you really don't have to go through, but you have to go through 讙讬讜专 because to make sure that you're Jews, you have to go through 讙讬讜专. I remember I spoke to Rabbi 诇讬讘住, he's one of the big 驻讜住拽讬诐 nowadays, huh? Brogier, and he's a big 驻讜住拽, and I met him a lot of times here, and I also wrote to him, he has 转砖讜讘讜转 that he wrote to me, and he said he doesn't understand why they said they should go through 讙讬讜专 诇讞讜诪专讗. They should go through 讙讬讜专 诇拽讜诇讗! 诇讞讜诪专讗 means to be stricter, to make sure, to go to 讙讬讜专. But if they go, if you tell them to go through 讙讬讜专, then that's a 拽讜诇讗, you're 诪讬拽诇, because you consider them 讙讜讬诐, that's a 拽讜诇讗! Because otherwise, if you consider them 讗讬讚谉, there's a problem. Now, I'll
tell you, this is a big problem not only with them. The problem is also with the group called 拽专讗讬诐, the Karaites. And that already the 驻讜住拽讬诐 speak about from the 专诪讘状诐's time. Some 驻讜住拽讬诐 held that this is a group of people who are actually 讙讜讬诐, and some held that they are 讗讬讚谉. But being that they're 讗讬讚谉, we have a big problem because they didn't keep. I myself, I must tell you, had a 砖讗诇讛 that someone came to me that a person who was married, a woman who was married, and anyway, they found out that the husband was actually from the group of Karaites. There are not too many in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, but he happened to be from that group, no one knew. And they were just married and she was pregnant, and they asked me the 砖讗诇讛, what do they do? Now, what should I say? Who's going to take responsibility of such a 砖讗诇讛? I asked at that time Reb 讝诇诪谉 砖诪注讜谉 讚讘讜专拽讬谉, and he wouldn't 驻住拽谉. I finally got to Reb 诪砖讛 驻讬讬谞砖讟讬讬谉, and Reb 诪砖讛 驻住拽谞讟, and he said like this: being that she's pregnant already, he will be 诪讬拽诇 and let him go through 讙讬讜专. Let him convert. He didn't want to! He claimed, \"What, I should convert? I'm a Jew!\" He had no choice. Huh? Yeah. 驻专讜诐, I wouldn't say, but he was 驻专讜诐, 砖讜诪专 砖讘转, 讻砖专, I mean yeah. And he had no choice because we told him otherwise you know, and he went through 讙讬讜专. But it's a big He said he was a That's what he said, \"Because she's pregnant, there's a question of a child, I will be 诪讬拽诇, and I will 驻住拽谉 that according to that opinion that they're 讙讜讬诐, that's the 拽讜诇讗.\" And the same thing with these. Now, you ask me if the 专讘讬 ever said anything about it? The 专讘讬, in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, when they came out, the 专讘讬 said to be strong, not to give in to the to the pressure that they made. I remember just then when they Rabbi 讘谞讬诪讬谉 讙讜专讜讚爪拽讬 happened to be visiting Miami, so he came to the 讬砖讬讘讛 and he was speaking with me, and we were speaking about it. And he said that the 专讘讬 told him, and he was the one that was in charge of the schools in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, you know, the 专讘讬's 砖诇讬讞, and to be strong, not to give in, and not to take him. And he said that the problem was the Joint, he's from the top people in the Joint, give a lot of money, and they made conditions that they're only going to give the money if you take in into the different schools a certain percentage of them. And the 专讘讬 said not to budge, and if it means losing the money, you go on to on top of their heads. He told me that himself. I heard from somebody, now this is, I don't even know if I should say it, because I don't know how reliable it is, but I heard it then yet. I don't remember even now from whom I heard it. I don't think it was from him, but somebody, that the 专讘讬 told somebody, now again, I'm making putting a claimer before I even say it, because it could be it's not true, that he said he started looking into this issue, this subject in 讛诇讻讛 to see, investigating in 讛诇讻讛, and he saw where it's going to lead, and he stopped. He didn't want to finish. At one point, in one of the schools in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, they wanted to pressure them to take without going through 讙讬讜专, which that even the Israeli government, the 专讘谞讜转 said they should. And they didn't take him, and they closed the school. Because it was a it's a public school, it's 诪诪诇讻转讬 讚转讬, so it's a public school by the government, a religious public school that's funded by the government, and the government, \"We're not going to give you the money,\" and they closed the school, and Lubavitch didn't give in. But that was a case where they didn't even want to go through the 讙讬讜专. If they would go through the 讙讬讜专, that's already a 拽讜诇讗, that we say okay, we'll assume they're 讙讜讬诐, but to assume they're 讗讬讚谉 and let them in, that's that was the So, the 专讘讬's stand was pretty firm, even though he didn't come out publicly, but The government, no, demand. The government, quietly, was trying to make the They made demonstrations against the 专讘谞讜转 not to be 诪讙讬讬专. They could They're 砖讬讬讱 to make demonstrations? What, they just came from Ethiopia, they knew what's flying? The government 讚专讬讬讟 讗讜谞讟注专 that they should make demonstrations against, because they don't want them to be 诪讙讬讬专. They don't want, because if you tell them to be 诪讙讬讬专, that means that they're 讙讜讬诐. They They made a whole 讟讜诪诇 that they saved 10,000 讗讬讚谉 from Ethiopia, listen, here you're going to tell them to be 诪讙讬讬专? This is against their whole philosophy. They didn't want them to be 诪讙讬讬专, and they pushed them to not to be 诪讙讬讬专. Which boys? The Ethiopians? Yeah, probably, probably. If those that are 驻专讜诐, the moment they became 驻专讜诐, they realized and they were 诪讙讬讬专. Yes, yes, definitely. Yes. It's the 专诪讘诐 says that it's worse than any other, yeah. Well, the 转讜专讛 allows it. Well, the 转讜专讛 says it's okay. I don't want to get into the details because with how the 转讜专讛 describes it. Because the 讚讬谞讬诐 from last week's 驻专砖讛, an 注讘讚 注讘专讬, if a Jew a Jewish person sells himself as a Jewish slave, his master is allowed to give him a 砖驻讞讛 讻谞注谞讬转, a non-Jewish maid, as a wife, even though he's married, not only even though he's married, only if he's married, and then the children are 注讘讚讬诐. He asks the same same question, so he is, so to speak, producing 讙讜讬诐. But that's what the 转讜专讛 says. See, this is a problem that the 转讜专讛 says, and the 转讜专讛 says you're allowed, there's no problem. Yeah, I don't know if it's a good thing. The 转讜专讛 says that an 注讘讚 注讘专讬 is supposed to work for his master 注讘讚讬 讘讬讜诐 讜注讘讚讬 讘诇讬诇讛, that's one of the things. That's why he has to do it. So, he will produce more 注讘讚讬诐, that's one of the things that he does for his master. He could have a lot, yeah. Now, there's another point here, there's another point here: when we talk about a 讗讬讚 and we talk about a 讙讜讬, there is another concept, an in-between one, which people are not even familiar with. Like this, we know a 讗讬讚 and a 讙讜讬, there's nothing else. There is an in-between, and that's an 注讘讚 讻谞注谞讬. When a 讗讬讚 would buy a non-Jewish slave, this guy is in-between. He has to go to the he has to have 诪讬诇讛, circumcised, he has to have 诪讬诇讛, 讟讘讬诇讛 in the 诪拽讜讛, he has to accept himself upon himself 诪爪讜转, but he's only obligated to do the 诪爪讜转 like a woman. Just like women are only are exempt from 诪爪讜转 which are have a have a time limit, so he too. 诪爪讜转 砖讛讝诪谉 讙专诪讗. And the 专诪讘诐 says that an 注讘讚 讻谞注谞讬, an interesting expression: 讬爪讗 诪讻诇诇 讙讜讬 讜诇讻诇诇 讬讛讜讚讬 诇讗 谞讻谞住. He's not a 讙讜讬 anymore, but he's not a Jew either. So he's a a person in-between. So he's not really a 讙讜讬. We see from last week's 驻专砖讛, if you kill an 注讘讚 讻谞注谞讬, you get killed for it. If you kill a 讙讜讬, you don't. Are 注讘讚讬诐 讻谞注谞讬诐. They're 50/50. They're in middle, yeah. Yes. We spoke about that before. Who says that you're not allowed to do it? The 转讜专讛! The same 转讜专讛 is allowed, could say in this case you can. Okay, I guess we are finished. One more little question, okay. It says that when 讛砖诐 changed his name from 讗讘专诐 to
讗讘专讛诐, he said 讗讘 讛诪讜谉 讙讜讬诐 谞转转讬讱. I made you the father of all the nations, so it means he's the father of all 讙专讬诐. So it says that all the 讙专讬诐 came from 讗讘专讛诐, which is a little bit different than what I said from the 专诪讘诐 that you are 诪讬讜讞住 directly to 讛砖诐, but it does say that you are 诪讬讜讞住 to 讗讘专讛诐 also, from a different angle, and that's why a 讙专, because there's a famous question: how could a 讙专 讚讗讜讜注谉 and say 讗诇拽讬谞讜 讜讗诇拽讬 讗讘讜转讬谞讜? 讛砖诐, the father, the God of our fathers. It's not his father! Who's the father? I mean 讗讘专讛诐, 讬爪讞拽 is not his father, he doesn't come from 讗讘专讛诐. So it says that he does, because of that reason, because 讗讘专讛诐 is 讗讘 讛诪讜谉 讙讜讬诐. Just two seconds for everybody who was not here at the beginning, one, I want to thank So there's an 注谞讬谉 not to make a, not to make a 讙讝讬专讛 that the, that the 爪讬讘讜专 cannot hold. And then there's an 注谞讬谉 of, like, 讘诇 转讜住讬祝, like you shouldn't add on to, like you're not allowed to add on to the 转讜专讛. So, like, how do you know what's, what's the 讙讘讜诇? Like where does, where does it cross the line between making a fence and adding on to the 转讜专讛?
