Shemini Atzeret
Shemini Atzeres
The Midrash's mashal of a king asking his closest friend to stay one more day after a long celebration raises an obvious question: what does one extra day actually change if the parting comes anyway? The answer locates the real cause of distance from Hashem in division among Yidden themselves, and shows that Sukkos's achdus, built through a mitzvah where the daled minim remain four distinct species, is still a unity of details. Shemini Atzeres's single korban and the dancing with a sealed Torah on Simchas Torah forge a more essential, borderless achdus, one strong enough to carry through the whole year and draw down all the brachos.

Chumash's praise of Eretz Yisrael for drinking rainwater rather than being irrigated automatically like Mitzrayim points to something beyond simple seasonal timing: rain forces a person to look up and daven, while a self-sustaining river lets him forget where his sustenance comes from. Bentching geshem on Shemini Atzeres, right as the yamim tovim end and the ordinary year of gashmiyus begins, supplies the koach to carry that awareness — that 'Hashem hanosein lecha koach' — through the months not filled with yom tov. The dancing with the Torah on Simchas Torah, connecting to the etzem of the Torah rather than to learning itself, is what generates that koach.
