SHEVUOS

Continuing through the Mishnah's roster of claimants who swear and take payment without their opponent's oath — the unpaid worker, the robbery victim, the wounded party, the suspect storekeeper, and the widow collecting her ketubah — before turning to the Gemara's search for why the sages shifted the oath specifically onto hired workers. Ben Nanas's dissent when both sides risk a false oath, the migo of an employer who could have denied hiring the worker altogether, and a full set of Tosafot's questions round out the sugya.

SHEVUOS

Maseches Shevuos daf 46 works through why a hired worker's oath depends on witnesses to the hiring, tracing Rav and Shmuel's migo through Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak's rejection and into Shmuel's ruling on a craftsman's wage dispute. The sugya develops the machloket between Rabbi Yehuda and the Rabbanan over making a takanah upon a takanah, then turns to the oaths owed to a robbery victim and a wounded claimant, closing with Tosafot's analysis of the axe-wielder's migo.

SHEVUOS

Maseches Shevuos daf 47 examines who counts as chashud al hashevuah -- including a person caught in a prior false oath and one who gambles with dice -- and what happens when both litigants in a dispute are equally suspect. The daf follows the machloket between the sages of Bavel and Eretz Yisrael over where an unswearable oath goes, then works through a grabbed piece of silver, a storekeeper's dispute with unpaid workers, and the rules for two contradicting sets of witnesses.

SHEVUOS

Maseches Shevuos daf 48 opens with the fruit-seller and the money-changer cases behind Rabbi Yehuda's dissent, then turns to the harder question of an oath owed by orphans collecting from orphans. Rami bar Chama's distinction over whether beis din already imposed the oath is tested against a widow's ketubah and a second wife's claim, before the sugya settles the matter through Beit Shammai's principle that a collectible document is as good as collected, and closes with when one imposed oath drags along another.

SHEVUOS

Maseches Shevuos daf 49, the closing daf of the masechta, works through the mishnah of the four watchmen and the penalties for a shomer who swears falsely about a lost or stolen deposit -- distinguishing cases where the lie would have saved him money from those where it wouldn't have. The daf ends with the Gemara's question of why the mishnah counts four watchmen when their halachos reduce to three, including the Lubavitcher Rebbe's reading of why a renter occupies a category of his own between a borrower and a paid watchman.
