15 Shevat: Part 3
Why the 15th of Shevat teaches that even a complete moon must keep growing, unpacked through its gematria link to the tribes of Yosef and Asher and its universal call to go beyond the letter of the law.
Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Shevat · 16:29
Chamishah Asar B'Shevat falls on the full moon, a symbol of shleimut, yet its Yom Tov celebrates ongoing growth, teaching that true completeness means recognizing how much further one must climb. The gematria equating ilan with Shevat, and the month's dual associations with the tribes of Yosef (hosafah, constant addition) and Asher (pleasure that expands the bone), root this theme in the structure of the twelve months and the twelve tribes. A closing look at why the day's agricultural halachos apply only in Eretz Yisrael resolves into the teaching that every Jew is essentially a ben Eretz Yisrael, obligated to keep growing and to embrace practice lifnim mishurat hadin.

Concerning the inyan of Chamishah Asar b'Shevat, we explained in the previous shiur that this is a remez to the inyan of growth. It takes place on the 15th day of the month, which is the day that 拽讬讬诪讗 住讬讛专讗 讘讗砖诇诪讜转讗, the day that the moon is full, which represents shleimut, completion. It represents the completion of the avodah of the Bnei Yisrael, because the Bnei Yisrael are compared to the moon and they count by the moon, and therefore when we're talking about the completion of the moon, the full moon, it refers to the completion of the Bnei Yisrael. But at the same time, what is the holiday, the Yom Tov of Chamishah Asar b'Shevat, when we celebrate the inyan of growth? And this shows that when a person is really complete, which means when he comes to a very high madregah, then he realizes that he still has to grow. So therefore, Chamishah Asar b'Shevat is even greater than the 15th day of Nisan and the 15th day of Tishrei. Because the 15th day of Nisan represents the inyan of shleimut, the 15th day of Tishrei represents shleimut, and therefore Yom Tov takes place on these two Chamishah Asar. But on Chamishah Asar b'Shevat we have an additional point that the shleimut is so great that you realize that you have to grow. This is connected davka to Chamishah Asar b'Shevat, and it's connected to the month of Shevat.
And as we see an interesting thing that the word 讗讬诇谉 is 讘讙讬诪讟专讬讗 砖讘讟. If you write the word 讗讬诇谉 讘诪诇讜讗讜, which means the word 讗讬诇谉 really is written 讗诇祝 讬讜讚 诇诪讚 谞讜谉, but if you write it out differently, you write out every letter with its full 诪讬诇讜讬: 讗诇祝 诇诪讚 讬讜讚 谞讜谉, the 讗诇祝 itself is 讗诇祝 诇诪讚 驻讗, 讬讜讚 is 讬讜讚 讜讗讜 讚诇转, 诇诪讚 is 诇诪讚 诪诐 讚诇转, 谞讜谉 is 谞讜谉 讜讗讜 谞讜谉. So 讗讬诇谉 讘诪诇讜讗讜 is 讘讙讬诪讟专讬讗 砖讘讟. So we see a special connection between 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转 and Shevat. But what is the depth of the connection between 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转 and Shevat? We know that every month has a special connection to a Shevat, because the 12 months of the year are connected to the 12 砖讘讟讬诐. As it says in Megaleh Amukot on the Torah in the beginning of 驻专砖转 砖诪讜转, and also in 驻专砖转 讘讗 on the 驻住讜拽, 拽驻讬讟诇 讬状讘 驻住讜拽 讘壮, and many other 住驻专讬诐, in the Kehillat Yaakov, 讗讜转 讬壮, 注专讱 讬状讘 讞讚砖讬诐 讬状讘 砖讘讟讬诐. And even says in the Tur Orach Chaim, the end of 住讬诪谉 转讻状讝, that 讬状讘 专讗砖讬 讞讚砖讬 讛砖谞讛 砖讙诐 讛诐 谞拽专讗讬诐 诪讜注讚讬诐 讻谞讙讚 讬状讘 砖讘讟讬诐, that the 12 专讗砖讬 讞讚砖讬诐 of the year are 讻谞讙讚 the 12 砖讘讟讬诐. So even though he mentions it concerning the 12 专讗砖讬 讞讚砖讬诐, but it's self-understood that since Rosh Chodesh is the beginning of the month, this refers to the whole month. So the 12 months are 讻谞讙讚 the 12 砖讘讟讬诐.
The month of Shevat is 讻谞讙讚 Yosef. According to one way that we count, it's 讻谞讙讚 Yosef. There's another way that it's 讻谞讙讚 Asher, which means if we count it according to their birth, then the 11th month of the year is the 11th child, which is Yosef. If we count it according to the way they brought the 拽专讘谞讜转, because we know when they dedicated the 诪砖讻谉, the 12 砖讘讟讬诐, the 12 谞砖讬讗讬诐 of the 12 砖讘讟讬诐 brought their 拽专讘谞讜转 for 讞谞讜讻转 讛诪讝讘讞, but that was a different order, not the order the way they were born. According to that order, the 11th one was Asher. If we're going to say that Shevat is connected to the Shevat of Yosef, we right away see a connection between what we explained before: that 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转 expresses the 注谞讬谉 of growth, that you feel that you constantly have to grow higher and higher, is connected to Yosef. Because as we know the name of something represents and expresses what the thing is, so the name Yosef expresses what Yosef stands for. The 驻住讜拽 says that why was he called Yosef? Because she said, his mother Rachel said, 讬讜住祝 讛壮 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专, 讛壮 should add to me another son. And as the 住驻专讬诐 explain, what does that mean? That his 注讘讜讚讛 was going to be, that he was going to change from a 讗讞专 to a 讘谉. He was going to take 讗讞专, other things, and change it and add it and make it become a 讘谉. 讗讞专, which is others, represents sitara achara, the other side, which means the 拽诇讬驻讛, the evil. And his avodah was changing from that into kedushah, as we actually saw that that's what happened later on. He became the 诪诇讱 of 诪爪专讬诐, and he definitely utilized everything that he did in 诪爪专讬诐 to serve Hashem. So he changed from 讗讞专 to a 讘谉. So he added. The name Yosef itself comes from the word 讛讜住驻讛, addition. When we say a person has to grow, that means he constantly has to add and add and add, ma'alin bakodesh, you have to go higher and higher, you have to be mosif veholech, you have to add, as the 诇砖讜谉 is written concerning Chanukah candles, that you have to be mosif veholech, you have to add. This is the concept of tzemichah, the concept of growth. So we see here the connection between the 注谞讬谉 of 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟, which represents the concept of growth, to the month of 砖讘讟. So here we see all the 注谞讬谞讬诐. It's on the 15th day, which is 砖诇讬诪讜转, the real 砖诇讬诪讜转 is that you know that you have to grow, And this is the 15th day of the month of 砖讘讟 because 砖讘讟 is 讻谞讙讚 讬讜住祝, which is the 注谞讬谉 of Yosef, an 注谞讬谉 of growth. And since 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 is 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转, which means it's the beginning of the year, so just like the head is the beginning of the body, but not only the beginning, but it also controls the whole body, so too, this 注谞讬谉 that we said in 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 is not only 谞讜讙注 to the month of 砖讘讟, which is the month of Yosef, but really from here we have to bring it into the whole year, into all other months. Even though all other months are connected to different 砖讘讟讬诐, but from here we take this concept of tzemichah, of growing, and the concept of 讛讜住驻讛, of adding, to the whole year. Because we know even concerning the 砖讘讟讬诐, there is an 注谞讬谉 of 讛转讻诇诇讜转 讛砖讘讟讬诐 讝讛 讘讝讛, the combination of all 砖讘讟讬诐, the mixture of all 砖讘讟讬诐. Like we find by the berachah of Yaakov to the 砖讘讟讬诐, so it says, after he benched them, it says, 讗讬砖 讗砖专 讻讘专讻转讜 讘专讱 讗讜转诐, 驻住讜拽 in 驻专砖转 讜讬讞讬, 拽驻讬讟诇 诪\"讟, 驻住讜拽 讻\"讞. What means? And after he benched every 砖讘讟 with its own berachah, which is connected to what that 砖讘讟 stands for, which is 讗讬砖 讗砖专 讻讘专讻转讜, which is the berachah that belongs to each one separately, then it says 讘专讱 讗讜转诐, he blessed them. And as 专砖\"讬 says there, it means that 讻诇诇谉 讻讜诇诐 讘讻诇 讛讘专讻讜转, he included them all in all the berachot, which means that this is the combination of all the 砖讘讟讬诐. Which means that in addition to every 砖讘讟 having its own inyan, then that inyan of each 砖讘讟 is given to all the other 砖讘讟讬诐 because they're all combined, they're all 谞讻诇诇, they're all together. And the same is 诇讙讘讬 the inyan that we just said, that even though Yosef is the one that represents the concept of hosafah, but from Yosef it has to be 谞诪砖讱 to all the 砖讘讟讬诐, which means from the month of 砖讘讟 it has to be 谞诪砖讱 to the whole year, and that's the meaning of it being Rosh Hashanah, it's the head of the year, that this inyan that 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转 represents is to be brought to the whole year, that the whole year we have to feel that we constantly have to grow and grow. Especially concerning Yosef, we know that Yosef has a special connection to Klal Yisrael in addition to the fact that he is one of the 砖讘讟讬诐 and they're all combined. But Yosef in particular has a connection to Klal Yisrael, as it says in 转讛诇讬诐, 拽驻讬讟诇 驻', 驻住讜拽 讘', 专讜注讛 讬砖专讗诇, and then it says 谞讜讛讙 讻爪讗谉 讬讜住祝. And 专砖\"讬 says it means that 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇 谞拽专讗讬诐 注诇 砖诐 讬讜住祝, all the Yidden are called by the name 讬讜住祝, 诇驻讬 砖驻讬专谞住诐 讜讻诇讻诇诐 讘讬诪讬 讛专注讘, because he fed them at the time of the hunger. So we see that all Yisrael, all Yidden from all 砖讘讟讬诐 are called Yosef. So whatever Yosef represents applies to all the Yidden from all the 砖讘讟讬诐, more than just because Yosef is one of the 砖讘讟讬诐 and they're all connected, but Yosef's 注谞讬谉 is 砖讬讬讻讜转 to all the 砖讘讟讬诐 more. And therefore, the 注谞讬谉 of Shevet, which is connected to Yosef, which is brought out in the 注谞讬谉 of Chamishah Asar B'Shvat, is 谞讜讙注 to all months of the year, and it's 谞讜讙注 to 讙讗谞抓 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇.
And the same is also according to the opinion that the month of Shevat is connected to the Shevat of Asher, it also brings out the concept of growth. Because we know the 注谞讬谉 of Asher is connected to pleasure. We know that fat comes from pleasure. A person becomes fat through pleasure. And the 注谞讬谉 of Shevet Asher was connected to pleasure, as Yaakov Avinu gave Asher the 讘专讻讛, as it says in 驻专砖转 讜讬讞讬, 拽驻讬讟诇 诪\"讟, 驻住讜拽 讻', 诪讗砖专 砖诪谞讛 诇讞诪讜, that from Asher, his bread will be fat, 讜讛讜讗 讬转谉 诪注讚谞讬 诪诇讱, he will give the 诪注讚谞讬 诪诇讱, which is the pleasurable things. So he's connected to pleasure, and pleasure is connected to growth. Because the 驻住讜拽 says, 砖诪讜注讛 讟讜讘讛 转讚砖谉 注爪诐. Good news, which means pleasure, a person has pleasure through good news or any other pleasure, 转讚砖谉 注爪诐, it'll make his bone fatter, it'll make his bone grow. As the Gemara in Gittin tells the story that the general, when he heard the good news that he became the king, couldn't put his shoe on because his foot actually grew. From pleasure you grow. Since Asher represents pleasure, so it also represents the concept of growing. So this also is connected to Chamishah Asar B'Shvat, which is the 注谞讬谉 of 爪诪讬讞讛, even if we're going to learn that the month of Shevat is connected to the Shevat of Asher.
But then we have to understand concerning this whole 注谞讬谉 that we said, that we have to take a lesson from 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟, as we explained. Lichorah, the ones that have to take a lesson from 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 are only the people who live in Eretz Yisrael because the whole 讚讬谉 of 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 is only 谞讜讙注 to Eretz Yisrael. This that we say that 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 is 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 for 讗讬诇谞讜转 is 谞讜讙注 only to 讚讬谞讬诐 of Eretz Yisrael. It's 谞讜讙注 诇讙讘讬 the 讚讬谉 of 诪注砖专. The 讚讬谉 is that when you have to take off 诪注砖专, you are not allowed to mix the fruit from one year 诇讙讘讬 the fruit of the other year. And the 讚讬谉 is, when is the year up, or when does the year start? 讞诪讬砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟. And therefore, the Rambam says in Halachot Terumot, 驻专拽 讛', 讛诇讻讛 讬\"讗, that you cannot mix 诇讙讘讬 the 讚讬谉 of 诪注砖专 between the fruit that were 讞谞讟讜, that blossomed before Shevat, with the fruit that blossomed after Shevat. This is a 讚讬谉 only in Eretz Yisrael, because there is no 讚讬谉 of 诪注砖专 in chutz la'aretz. So this whole 讚讬谉 of 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 is only in Eretz Yisrael. It's 谞讜讙注 诇讙讘讬 another 讚讬谉 also. It's 谞讜讙注 诇讙讘讬 the way we count the 诪注砖专 砖谞讬 or 诪注砖专 注谞讬. The 讚讬谉 is that in the cycle of seven years, the seven years of the 砖诪讬讟讛, the first two years, and also the fourth and the fifth year, you must take off 诪注砖专 专讗砖讜谉 and 诪注砖专 砖谞讬. The third and the sixth year, instead of Maaser Sheni, you take off Maaser Ani. Now we count the years 诇讙讘讬 the cycle of Shemitah from Rosh Hashanah, which means from the first day of Tishrei. Nevertheless, all the fruit that grew from Rosh Hashanah of the third year till 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟, they are still connected to the second year. And from them you would have to take off Maaser Sheni, not Maaser Ani like you do in the third year. So that's another din where this inyan of 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 being 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转 applies. But this also is noge'a only to Eretz Yisrael, because this din of Maaser Sheni, Maaser Ani, etc., etc. only applies to Eretz Yisrael. So lichora, if we're going to take a lesson from this din of 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 being 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 诇讗讬诇谞讜转, it should only apply to the people who live in Eretz Yisrael. In ruchniyut, if we take this and apply it in ruchniyut to the spiritual 注讘讜讚转 讛砖诐, it would mean as follows. Eretz Yisrael represents those people who want to do 转讜专讛 讜诪爪讜讜转, because the word 讗专抓 comes from the word 专爪讛, whether it means wanting or running. The word 讬砖专讗诇 is made up of 专讗砖讬 转讬讘讜转 讬砖 砖砖讬诐 专讬讘讜讗 讗讜转讬讜转 诇转讜专讛, as it says in Megaleh Amukot, which means there are 600,000 letters to the Torah. At any event, it represents Torah. So Eretz Yisrael means the will of Torah, or the running to Torah. So this represents a person who is close to Torah, who keeps Torah. When we say that the dinim of 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 apply to Eretz Yisrael, it would seem that the lessons we're supposed to take from 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 are only for those people who are close to Torah. But those people who are in 讞讜抓 诇讗专抓, outside of Eretz Yisrael, which means in ruchniyut that they are not from those who want Torah, to them 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 has no connection. But likorah, if the lesson we're supposed to take from 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 is that we're supposed to constantly grow, the lesson should be specifically for them. For them even more, because they have to grow more than others. Those people who learn Torah and do mitzvot, they also have to grow. But those who are far from it certainly have to grow. So the lesson should be to them, too. So how does that fit to the fact that the din of 讞诪砖讛 注砖专 讘砖讘讟 mainly is for those who are in Eretz Yisrael? But the answer to this is that be'emet, essentially, every yid is considered a 讘谉 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. Every yid is be'emet considered a person who wants Torah u'mitzvot. As the Rambam says in Hilchot Gerushin the end of the second 驻专拽, that every yid mitzad his neshamah wants to do all the mitzvot and wants to stay away from aveirot. And if a person claims he doesn't want, it's only because the yetzer hara forced him to go against his own true will. And therefore the Rambam says that if a yid is forced to do a mitzvah, it is not considered forced, it is considered that he is doing it out of his free will. Because be'emet he wants to do it, his yetzer hara forced him against his own will. All you do is you force off the force of the yetzer hara, and what comes out is his true, essential will that he really wants. So be'emet every yid is considered a 讘谉 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, a person from Eretz Yisrael. In ruchniyut that means every yid is a person who is 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, who has the ratzon to Yisrael, the ratzon to Torah, the will to Torah, or the running to Torah. And the truth is that Rashi explains that in Tehillim, in 拽讗驻讬讟诇 驻状讝. There the 驻住讜拽 says: 讜诇爪讬讜谉 讬讗诪专 讗讬砖 讜讗讬砖 讬讜诇讚 讘讛. And to Tzion it will be said that a man and a man was born there. And as Rashi explains there, it means that whether a person was born in Yerushalayim, in Tzion, or was not born in Tzion, it will be said that he is born there, which means essentially every Yid is born in Tzion, which means in Yerushalayim. Now Yerushalayim represents the same thing as 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 讘讻诇诇, because Yerushalayim is made up of the two words 讬专讗讛 砖诇诐, so it represents 砖诇诪讜转 of 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐, completion, full 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐. So the 驻住讜拽 says, according to Rashis 驻砖讟, that every single Yid is considered that he is born in Yerushalayim, he is born in Tzion. Now Tzion, the word Tzion also represents the same thing, because the word Tzion means a 住讬诪谉, a sign. Why are Yidn called Tzion? Because they are a 住讬诪谉 to Hashem. And that's what the 驻住讜拽 says: Every Yid is born in Tzion. Every Yid is considered a person who is a sign to Hashem, because essentially every Yid wants to do 转讜专讛 讜诪爪讜讜转. So every Yid is really a 讘谉 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, a person of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. So this lesson that we're supposed to take from Chamishah Asar b'Shvat applies to every single Yid. Even to those Yidn who are far from being people of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 讘专讜讞谞讬讜转, still they are also people of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 because essentially they also want to do 转讜专讛 讜诪爪讜讜转. So therefore, this lesson applies to everybody. And lessons are, as we said before, first of all, the lesson is that every Yid has to grow. Even though it's on the 15th day of the month, which shows 砖诇讬诪讜转, but as complete as you are, you always have to grow. That's the 注谞讬谉 of Chamisha Asar B'Shvat, the Rosh Hashanah of the trees. It's time when we celebrate the growth. And the second lesson is, as we said before, the growing in inyan of lifnim mishurat hadin, of doing more than the requirement of the halachah, because we celebrate the Yom Tov in concerning the fruit, and as the Torah says, fruit is 诇转注谞讜讙. 讞讬讟讛 讜砖注讜专讛, grain, is what we need, we must have. A person must live, so in order to live he must eat bread. So that gives a person his existence, so that's a must. Fruit is 诇转注谞讜讙, is for pleasure. In ruchniyut that means, when we do a mitzvah that we have to do, so that is like bread. That's something that we must have. Lifnim mishurat hadin, that's already extra. That's like fruit which is 诇转注谞讜讙. And this is a lesson that we take from Chamisha Asar B'Shvat, that a Yid has to make a 讛讞诇讟讛, a resolution, to grow and to add in inyan of lifnim mishurat hadin, doing more than the requirement of the halachah. Since you know that this is what Hashem would like, so you do it even if you're not mechuyav to do it. And if you do it on Chamisha Asar B'Shvat, so then this gives you a koach that you will be able to do it throughout the whole year.
