DAYS ON THE JEWISH CALENDAR: SHEVAT

Month of Shevat

Why the mystical name-combination tied to Shevat is drawn from the halachos of temurah, and how Yosef's ability to rule Mitzrayim without losing his tzidkus defines the month's avodah.

Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Shevat · 18:06

Every month of the year carries its own tziruf, letter-combination, of the four-letter Name of Hashem, and Shevat's is hei-yud-vav-hei, drawn from the pasuk hamer yemirenu vehaya hu in the halachos of temurah, where an animal wrongly exchanged for a korban becomes kadosh together with the one it replaced. Since each month also corresponds to one of the twelve shevatim according to birth order from Nissan, Shevat corresponds to Yosef, whose singular achievement, as Rashi notes, was ruling all of Mitzrayim while remaining the same tzaddik he was as a shepherd, bringing kedushah into thoroughly secular affairs rather than being pulled down by them. This is the deeper meaning of his name, Yosef Hashem li ben acher, transforming what is acher, other, into a ben, a son of Hashem, precisely the pattern of the temurah pasuk that names Shevat: turning what seems secular into something sacred without loss to the one who does the turning.

Shevat's Hidden Name: The Tziruf of Havayah in Hamer Yemirenu

Today's shiur is going to be concerning the general idea of the month of Shevat. It says in sefarim, mainly written in the Pardes, 砖注专 讬状讙 驻专拽 讙壮, and in the Mishnat Chassidim, 住讚专 诪讜注讚, 诪住讻转 谞讬住谉, that every month has a connection to a different 爪讬专讜祝 of the 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛, which means, we know that the 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛, Hashem's name is made up of four letters: 讬-拽-讜-拽. And we know that when we have four letters, we could make 24 different combinations of words. As it says in Sefer Yetzirah, that when we have two letters, we could make two words. For instance, if you have the letter Aleph and Bet, you could make 讗讘 and you could make 讘讗: Aleph Bet or Bet Aleph. If you have three letters, then you could make six combinations: you could have Aleph Bet Gimel, Aleph Gimel Bet, etc., it'll come out to six different combinations. Six words can be made up of three letters. If you have four letters, then the different combinations can make up 24 different words. Since 讬-拽-讜-拽 has four letters, so really you could have 24 combinations in the name of 讛砖诐, 讬-拽-讜-拽. But out of the 24, there is a 讞砖讘讜谉 of 讬状讘, of 12 爪讬专讜驻讬 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛. And there are explanations why we only count 12 out of the 24, but whatever the reason should be, we have a 讞砖讘讜谉 of 讬状讘 爪讬专讜驻讬 讛讜讬状讛, 12 different combinations of the name 讛讜讬状讛. And it says that every one of the 12 months of the year has a connection to a different 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛, to a different way you're able to set up the four letters of 讬-拽-讜-拽. And in each month it has a connection to a certain 驻住讜拽, because in different 驻住讜拽讬诐 you have 专诪讝讬诐, you have hints and 专讗砖讬 转讬讘讜转 to the different 爪讬专讜驻讬诐 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛. So it says in the Siddur HaAri zal in the 讻讜讜谞讜转 of Rosh Chodesh, and in Mishnat Chassidim, the end of 诪住讻转 讟讘转 讜砖讘讟, that the 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛 that is connected to the month of Shevat is the 爪讬专讜祝 of 讛-讬-讜-讛. And they write that this is connected to what it says in the 驻住讜拽 in 驻专砖转 讘讞讜拽讜转讬, 拽驻讬讟诇 讻状讝, 驻住讜拽 诇状讙: 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗. The Heh of 讛诪专, then the 讬壮 of 讬诪讬专谞讜, and then the 讜壮 of 讜讛讬讛, and then the 讛壮 of 讛讜讗. So 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗 is the 专讗砖讬 转讬讘讜转 讛-讬-讜-讛. This is the 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛 which has a connection to the month of Shevat. So lechora this needs explanation, because we know that everything that's in the Torah is 讘转讻诇讬转 讛讚讬讜拽, which means it is exactly exact. And therefore, since this inyan that every month has a connection to a different 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛, and it's all 诪专讜诪讝, hinted in different 驻住讜拽讬诐, since it's an inyan in the Torah, it has to be exact. It has to make sense and it has to fit. So when we say that the 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛 that's connected to the month of Shevat is in the 驻住讜拽 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗, which means it's connected to these four words, that also has to make sense. And the truth is, we don't understand what this means, because in the 驻住讜拽 it says right before that, 讜诇讗 讬诪讬专谞讜. This is a 驻住讜拽 that talks about the din of 转诪讜专讛. The din is that if a person has a behemah which is set aside for a korban, the 驻住讜拽 says, 讜诇讗 讬诪讬专谞讜, you're not allowed to exchange it, which means you're not allowed to take another behemah, which is 讞讜诇讬谉, not 拽讚砖讬诐, and put it next to it and say, let this one, the one that's 讞讜诇讬谉, be 转诪讜专转 讝讛, be instead of the other one. So the 驻住讜拽 says you're not allowed. It's a 诇讗讜 of the Torah. Till the Rambam says in the beginning of 讛诇讻讜转 转诪讜专讛, 讻诇 讛诪诪讬专 诇讜拽讛. If a person is 诪诪讬专, if a person does say on a behemah which is 讞讜诇讬谉 that that should be 转诪讜专转 the one that's 拽讚砖讬诐, he gets 诪诇拽讜转 for it, it's a 诇讗讜. But the Torah just says, 讜讗诐 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜, if a person did not listen to the 讚讬谉, and he was 注讜讘专 on the 注讘讬专讛, and he did exchange it, then the 驻住讜拽 continues, 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗 讜转诪讜专转讜 讬讛讬讛 拽讜讚砖. Then it, the one that was 拽讚砖讬诐 诇讻转讞讬诇讛, and the 讘讛诪转 讞讜诇讬谉 which became 转诪讜专讛, both of them will be 拽讜讚砖. So really, this 驻住讜拽 is speaking in a case where a person did not do what you're supposed to, because really, 讜诇讗 讬诪讬专谞讜. But if 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗, etc., then they both become 拽讜讚砖. And here we're saying that the 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬状讛 which is connected to the month of Shvat comes out from the words 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗, as if these four words are a concept in itself. And more than that, when we look just at these four words, it seems as if the Torah is giving us a 爪讬讜讜讬, 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜. that you should be 诪讬诪专, when really the 驻砖讟 in the 驻住讜拽 is just the opposite, that you're not allowed to be 诪讬诪专, 讜诇讗 讬诪讬专谞讜. So what is the 驻砖讟 that the 砖诐, 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬讛 that's connected to the month of Shvat has a 砖讬讬讻讜转 to 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗?

Twelve Months, Twelve Shevatim: Shevat's Connection to Yosef

To understand that, we'll bring in something else. It says in the Tur, Orach Chaim at the end of 住讬诪谉 转讬状讝, that the 讬状讘 专讗砖讬 讞讚砖讬 讛砖谞讛, the 12 专讗砖讬 讞讚砖讬诐 of the year, 砖讙诐 讛诐 谞拽专讗讬诐 诪讜注讚讬诐, they're also called 讬诪讬诐 讟讜讘讬诐, 讻谞讙讚 讬状讘 砖讘讟讬诐, they are 讻谞讙讚 the 12 砖讘讟讬诐. So the Tur says that the 12 专讗砖讬 讞讜讚砖 of every month are 讻谞讙讚 the 12 砖讘讟讬诐. But in other sefarim it says that not only the 专讗砖讬 讞讚砖讬诐 are 讻谞讙讚 the 12 砖讘讟讬诐, but also the whole month, as it says in the Megaleh Amukos on Chumash, in the beginning of Parshat Shemot, that every month has a connection to a specific Shevat. And exactly which 砖讘讟讬诐 are connected to which months, meaning in which order do we count the 砖讘讟讬诐, there are differences of opinion. But in the Siddur Yaavetz, Shaar Hagai, he says that we count the 砖讘讟讬诐 in the order of their birth, and we count it from Nisan. So according to that, he says the month of Shevat, which is the 11th month of the year, is 讻谞讙讚 讬讜住祝. And it's self-understood, when we say that each month is 讻谞讙讚 a 砖讘讟, what it means is that that month is mesugal, was a special time when we're able to do what that 砖讘讟 stood for. And that is a time when we have to strengthen the avodah of that 砖讘讟. As we know, it says in sefarim, that each one of the 12 砖讘讟讬诐 had a specific avodah that he had a special shayachut to more than others. Therefore, each month we have to see that which 砖讘讟 is 讻谞讙讚 that month, and the avodah, the way this 砖讘讟 served Hashem, that month we have to strengthen that 拽讜, that inyan, that has a connection to the 砖讘讟. Since we're saying that the month of 砖讘讟 has a special connection to Yosef, so that means that we have to strengthen and look into what was the avodah of Yosef, and that should be the avodah of the month of 砖讘讟 specifically. Be'emet, we always, all year round have to do the avodah of Yosef and of all other 砖讘讟讬诐, but it's self-understood, when we have a month which has a connection specifically to a certain 砖讘讟, then the avodah of that 砖讘讟, what that 砖讘讟 represented or the way that 砖讘讟 served Hashem, in that month we have to strengthen that avodah specifically. So in the month of shevet, we have to strengthen the avodah of Yosef. So therefore, we have to see what was so special about the avodah of Yosef.

Yosef HaTzaddik: Ruling Mitzrayim Without Losing His Tzidkus

So we see on the pasuk in the beginning of Parashat Shemot, where it says 讜讬讜住祝 讛讬讛 讘诪爪专讬诐, 专砖状讬 explains as follows. He asks the kashya: What does the pasuk mean that Yosef was in 诪爪专讬诐, 讜讛诇讗 讛讜讗 讜讘谞讬讜 讛讬讜 讘讻诇诇 砖讘注讬诐? Wasn't Yosef and his children included in the 70 people that the Torah says came to Mitzrayim? 讜诪讛 讘讗 诇诇诪讚谞讜? What does this pasuk come to teach us? 讜讻讬 诇讗 讛讬讬谞讜 讬讜讚注讬诐 砖讛讜讗 讛讬讛 讘诪爪专讬诐? Don't we know that Yosef was in Mitzrayim? 讗诇讗 诇讛讜讚讬注讱 爪讚拽转讜 砖诇 讬讜住祝. The Torah comes to teach us the 爪讚拽讜转 of Yosef, that 讛讜讗 讬讜住祝 讛专讜注讛 讗转 爪讗谉 讗讘讬讜, this is the same Yosef that first used to be the shepherd of the 爪讗谉 of his father, 讛讜讗 讬讜住祝 砖讛讬讛 讘诪爪专讬诐 讜谞注砖讛 诪诇讱, he's the same Yosef that was in Mitzrayim and became the king, 讜注讜诪讚 讘爪讚拽讜, and still stood and was still the same tzadik. So what the Torah is telling us here, that the specialty of Yosef was that even though he was in Mitzrayim, he was still able to be the same tzadik. That means even though he was involved in being a melech in Mitzrayim, and being a melech in Mitzrayim meant that he was involved in all the different matters of the country, which would seem that these are things that take away a person from his deveikut, so to speak, from his connection to Hashem and from his ability of serving Hashem, nevertheless, he stayed and was the same tzadik as he was before. And this was the madregah of Yosef, not only when he became a king in Mitzrayim, but even from before that. When he was a slave, a servant by Potiphar, he was also involved in all these different things, not like other people in his time who were just 专讜注讬 爪讗谉, they were shepherds and they stayed out in the field. So they didn't have all these different things that bothered them and stopped them, so to speak, from serving Hashem. He, right then, when he became an eved to Potiphar, it says that he took over the household, and when the pasuk says 讜讬讘讗 讛讘讬转讛 诇注砖讜转 诪诇讗讻转讜, he came home to do his work, so it says in 转专讙讜诐 讗讜谞拽诇讜住, 诇诪讬讘讚拽 讘讻转讘讬 讚讞讜砖讘谞讬讛. He came to look into the 讻转讘讬诐 of the 讞砖讘讜谞讜转, of the accounts. He ran the accounts of the house. And later on, when he was put into jail, also, he was the one that ran, as the Torah says, the inyanim of the jail. And later on when he became the king, certainly, as Pharaoh said to him, 注诇 驻讬讱 讬砖拽 讻诇 注诪讬, through your mouth, through you, the whole nation will be fed, and he said to him, 讜讘诇注讚讬讱 诇讗 讬专讬诐 讗讬砖 讗转 讬讚讜 讜讗转 专讙诇讜, and without you no one should raise his hand or his foot, which means that he ran the affairs of the country completely. And these are all things that normally take away a person from being completely davuk in Hashem, and being able to serve Hashem properly. Nevertheless, Yosef was able to overcome that, and he was a tzaddik as he was before. And because of that he was even a bigger tzaddik. That's why we find that Yosef is from the only few that has the title Yosef HaTzaddik. Because the fact that he was able, able to overcome all these obstacles, this made him even into a bigger tzaddik. And what really happened was not only he overcame these obstacles, but being that he overcame them, this itself brought kedushah into these things also. Even though he was involved, as we would say, in 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇, in secular matters most of the time, but if since he did that in a way that it didn't take him away from his tzidkut, so he brought kedushah into these 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇. Because the only way it's possible that the involvement in all these secular things should not make him become in a lower level is only if you do all these things l'shem shamayim. So he definitely ran the country, or whatever he did, even though they were 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇, he did it all l'shem shamayim, with the intentions of serving Hashem. Now, being he did those things l'shem shamayim, so definitely he brought kedushah into these things. Because when a person serves Hashem, even with his own secular things, l'shem shamayim, then he brings kedushah into the secular things that he's involved in. So Yosef brought kedushah into these inyanim. And this is a big chidush that many other tzaddikim couldn't reach that level. That's why we find, as the mefarshim explain, that when Yaakov Avinu heard that his son Yosef is alive, and that he's a 诪诇讱 注诇 讻诇 讗专抓 诪爪专讬诐, he's a king over Mitzrayim, it says he didn't believe them. And one of the ways they proved to him that Yosef is alive, it says they told him the siman that Yosef said the last halachah he learned was the halachah of 注讙诇讛 注专讜驻讛. And the mefarshim explain it's not the peshat he didn't believe them. What did he think that his sons, the holy 砖讘讟讬诐, were liars chas veshalom? But the peshat is, when the pasuk says 讜讬讙讬讚讜 诇讜 诇讗诪专 注讜讚 讬讜住祝 讞讬 讜讻讬 讛讜讗 诪讜砖诇 讘讻诇 讗专抓 诪爪专讬诐, that when they said to him your son Yosef is still alive and he's the 诪讜砖诇, the king, the ruler over the whole of Mitzrayim, when they said your son is alive, obviously they meant he's alive the way you want him to be alive. Because if chas veshalom he's not a tzadik, he is like the Mitzrayim, then he's not really alive, as we know that 专砖注讬诐 讘讞讬讬讛诐 拽专讜讬讬诐 诪转讬诐, that the resha'im, the evil people, even while they're alive, they're called dead. So when they said to, to Yaakov, your son Yosef is 讞讬, is alive, they meant he's alive the way you wanted him to be alive. And that he couldn't believe, because the combination of both, that he's alive and he's a tzadik, together with 讜讻讬 讛讜讗 诪讜砖诇 讘讻诇 讗专抓 诪爪专讬诐, and at the same time he's the 诪讜砖诇, the ruler over Eretz Mitzrayim, that's something that's hard to believe. So they told him that Yosef gave us a siman that he learned with you the halachot of 注讙诇讛 注专讜驻讛, he gave him a siman of Torah, so that showed him true that Yosef is alive and he's still studying Torah, 讜讛专讗讬讛 the siman he gave was the siman concerning Torah. So it comes out from this that the avodah of Yosef was that he was able to be involved in the 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇 in a form of kedushah and bringing kedushah also into the 注谞讬谞讬诐 of 讞讜诇.

Turning Acher Into Ben: The Avodah of Sanctifying the Mundane

The Tzemach Tzedek in his Sefer Or HaTorah on Chumash explains that this is the reason why when Yosef was born, the reason why they gave him the name Yosef was because 讬讜住祝 讛砖诐 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专, that she said that Hashem add to me another son. We know that a name expresses the characteristic of the person, as the Gemara says 专讘 诪讗讬专 诪讚讬讬拽 讘砖诪讗, Rav Meir used to be medayek in the name etcetera, and that there are more proof to that. So since the pasuk says the reason he was called Yosef was because 讬讜住祝 讛砖诐 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专, this is a remez to the avodah of Yosef. As we said before, the avodah of Yosef was bringing kedushah into things which are not kedushah, this is the meaning of the word 讬讜住祝 讛砖诐 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专. That the avodah of Yosef was to make from 讗讞专, 讗讞专 means something else which is not kedushah, as the expression is sitra achra, the other side, means the side which is not kedushah, because when we say the other side, it's the other from the real side, the real side is kedushah, the real thing is kedushah, anything when we say 讗讞专, it means other, it is not kedushah, that's why the Rebbe of Rav Meir after he was 讬爪讗 诇转专讘讜转 专注讛 they called him 讗讞专. So when the pasuk says 讬讜住祝 讛砖诐 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专, he says the pshat is that his avodah is to take 讗讞专, things which are not kedushah, and 讬讜住祝 讛砖诐 诇讬 讘谉, to make out of that a 讘谉. 讗讞专 means somebody else which is not kedushah, 讘谉 refers to 讘谞讬诐 讗转诐 诇讛砖诐 讗诇拽讬讻诐, to be a son of Hashem, which means to have the kedushah which comes from Hashem. So in the name of Yosef, which is because of 讬讜住祝 讛砖诐 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专, there's a hint to what the future avodah of Yosef is going to be. His avodah was going to be the inyan of making from 讗讞专, adding that it should become a 讘谉. And being that the month of Shevat has a special connection to Yosef, so obviously the avodah that is supposed to be stressed in the month of Shevat is the avodah of Yosef, the idea of realizing that we have to bring kedushah into 讗讞专, which means we have to stress the concept of 讻诇 诪注砖讬讱 诇砖诐 砖诪讬诐 讜讘讻诇 讚专讻讬讱 讚注讛讜. We have to stress the point that we have to bring kedushah into 诪注砖讬讱, that we have to do our own physical actions, not only when we do mitzvot, but when we do our own ma'asim, and when we have our own 讚专讻讬诐, we have to bring kedushah into that. Certainly, when we're able to bring kedushah into another Yid is vadai vadai that we have to do that. That we have another Yid that is missing kedushah, he is at this point in a level of 讗讞专, at least in a revealed fashion, even though inside definitely he has a neshamah, but in a revealed fashion he's in a form of 讗讞专. Our job is, during the month of Shevat especially, to bring kedushah into him, 讬讜住祝 讛壮 诇讬 讘谉, make out of the 讗讞专 into a 讘谉. And therefore, the tziruf of Shem Havayah that we have in the month of Shevat is the 驻住讜拽 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗. Because the Mezeritcher Maggid in the Sefer Or Torah, at the end of Parashat Bechukotai, he explains that what is the meaning of temurah? He says the inyan of temurah in avodah ruchniyut, in the spiritual avodah, is when we change from one thing and another, which means when we change from a 讚讘专 讞讜诇 and we turn it into kedushah, from a secular thing and we turn it into kedushah, which really is the same idea as 讬讜住祝 讛壮 诇讬 讘谉 讗讞专, making from 讗讞专 a 讘谉, bringing kedushah into the secular inyanim of the world, which is the avodah of Yosef. And that is why even though in simple 驻砖讟 of the 驻住讜拽 it says 讜诇讗 讬诪讬专谞讜, nevertheless, in 注讘讜讚讛 专讜讞谞讬讜转 there is an 注谞讬谉 of 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜. There is a concept of changing over chol into kedushah. But a person might think that how am I able to do this? After all, I'm afraid if I'm going to start getting involved with 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇 of trying to bring kedushah there, it might pull me down too. So the 驻住讜拽 says, 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗. We know that the word 讜讛讬讛, which means will be, means 讘讛讜讬讬转讜 讬讛讗, it'll stay it is the way it is, as the Gemara says in 讘专讻讜转 讚祝 讬状讙 注诪讜讚 讗壮 and many other places in Shas. So the 驻住讜拽 says here, 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜. You have to do this temurah. You have to bring kedushah in 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇. 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗, and he will stay anyway. Which means that the person himself will not be lowered because we have a koach to be able to bring kedushah into 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇. Now this is supposed to be done always, as we know that 讻诇 诪注砖讬讱 讬讛讬讜 诇砖诐 砖诪讬诐 讜讘讻诇 讚专讻讬讱 讚注讛讜 is a 爪讬讜讜讬 that we always have to do. But when it comes to the month of Shevat, when we have the 爪讬专讜祝 of 砖诐 讛讜讬壮 as it's hinted in the 驻住讜拽 讛诪专 讬诪讬专谞讜 讜讛讬讛 讛讜讗, and it is 讻谞讙讚 讬讜住祝 that his avodah was that to bring kedushah into 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇, that's when we have to strengthen this avodah within ourselves, trying to bring kedushah into 注谞讬谞讬 讞讜诇 and certainly bringing kedushah into other Yidden, which are b'emes not even chol, just superficially they are chol, but in their essence they are
