Rav Simai Bar Ashi and the Swallowed Snake

מיר האלטן דא the stories of these guys who swallowed in middle of עין ו, is it this עין ו? Now, they drank water, but that doesn't mean it necessarily the snake drank water. Right, but we're afraid, so so they not to take it, yeah. But it was it was it was common also that the snake should be in. Yeah. Okay, so let's go vayter. Rav Simi bar Ashi, holding on top here, the first line on top, רב סימי בר אשי חזייה לההוא גברא, he saw this guy, דבלע חיויא, who swallowed a snake. What did he want to do? אידמי ליה כפרשא, so he disguised himself, Rav Simi bar Ashi, like a soldier, like a horse, a rider, and he started pressuring him, and started getting him scared, you know, he made himself because getting scared and getting pressure, that helps inside. ואוכליה כסוסא במילחא, and he gave him to eat this stuff, this כסוסא with salt, וארהטיה קמיה תלתא מילי, and he made him run three מיל, so all the things together, the running and this food, and the scare that he had because he made himself look as if he's a policeman, ונפק מיניה גובי גובי, and pieces and pieces, after that, pieces of snake came out. The snake died inside and he started shitting it out. איכא

Rav Simai Swallows Snake; Elijah Disguises as Soldier

דאמרי, some say, Rav Simi bar Ashi himself בלע חיויא, he himself swallowed a snake. אתא אליהו אידמי ליה כפרשא, came Eliyahu Hanavi and he disguised himself like a soldier. אוכליה, huh? It's so unlike you with What to do with? אוכליה כסוסא במילחא, and besides what he did as a as a soldier, he also gave him to eat this this כסוסא in salt, וארהטיה קמיה תלתא מילי, and he made him run three miles, three מיל, ונפק מיניה גובי גובי, and these sticks these pieces came out. זאגט די Gemara vayter, האי מאן דטרקיה חיויא, somebody who was bitten by a snake, ליתי עוברא דחמרא חיורתא, let him bring an עובר, a fetus, of a white donkey, וליקרעיה, and let him tear it, tear it apart, ולותביה עילויה, and put it on the place where he was bitten. That's the cure. But הני מילי that's only good דלא אישתכח טריפה if that it's not found טריפה, that the the the donkey not found טריפה, which means there is no, not I mean טריפה in הלכה of eating, not found with a sickness, it's a healthy one. But if it's not healthy, then it doesn't work. The Gemara tells a story,

Failed Donkey Embryos and Abaye’s Explanation

ההוא סבא דהוה בפומבדיתא, there was this old man in פומבדיתא, דטרקיה חיויא, that a snake bit. הוו תליסר חמרי חיורתא בפומבדיתא, there were 13 white donkeys in Pumbedita. קרעינהו לכולהו, so they took them all, each one, and they tore it, ואישתכחו טריפתא, but they were found טרפות. So they didn't couldn't use it. Happened. Meaning 13 embryos? Yeah. והוה חדא בהאי גיסא דפומבדיתא, there was one more on the other side of Pumbedita, so they went to get that one to see if that one is good, עד דאזלי, till they got there, מאס לה, that donkey died. So what happened to the guy? Yeah. דאכלה אריה. Yeah. No, yeah yeah, till they brought it אכלה אריה, a lion ate it up, I'm sorry, it didn't die. It didn't I get it the lion ate it up, so they didn't have it. Had to be a pregnant donkey, though. Yeah. Does the Does the embryo have to be a white one or The mother. of a white one, every embryo are white. אמר להו אביי, so Abaye said, Are they rare? White donkeys are rare. Yeah. So that's why they only found 13. And they had to be pregnant. So Abaye said to them, the fact that the Eibershter made it so that out of all 13 not one was good, and the 14th one was eaten by a lion, so he said, דילמא חיויא דרבנן טרקיה. Maybe he was bitten by a snake because of the חכמים, דלית ליה אסותא, when you are bitten because of the Chachamim with a snake, then you never get cured.

Punishment for Defying the Chachamim: The Snake Bite

What does that mean? It's kativ it says, ופורץ גדר ישכנו נחש. It says if someone breaks through the boundaries, a snake will bite him. That means if someone, the Chachamim made a din and someone doesn't listen, his punishment that a snake will bite him, and the snake will bite him in such a way that אין לו אסותא, you never get healed. Huh? What else is available? Zogt di Gemara גמרא, when he said this, Abaye asked, is this maybe what it is? אמרו ליה, they said, אין, רבי. Yes, רבי, right. For something that he did. And what did he do? The Gemara explains. חייב מיתה חייב מיתה? Huh? דרבנן חייב מיתה? Oh, you're more than de'oraita. Doesn't mean חייב מיתה like Beit Din will kill him, but it's something that min hashamayim, yeah. But min hashamayim, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The rabbis send a snake? Who what? He didn't send Rabbanim didn't send a snake there. In a sense they did. What do you mean? There's a pasuk. When you play around with the Rabbanim that's what happens. You get a remez, there is a רמז, ישכנו נחש. נחש is a rashei teivot: נידוי, חרם, שמתא. Each one are three expressions of a חרם of a excommunication, three different types. So it says if you go against the Chachamim, you get it all. But the pshat, the pshat is pashut that the punishment is that the Eibershter will send the snake. And it's a kind of ...snake, that will not have an אסוותא, will not have a cure. So they asked him, maybe this is the guy, that's what the Eibershter made, he shouldn't be cured. So he said, \"You're right! What is the story? What did he do against the Chachamim?\" The guy himself said he, the secret? No, other people. דכי נח נפשיה דרב, what happened was, when Rav passed away, גזר רבי יצחק בר ביסנא, so Rabbi Yitzchak bar Bisna made a gezeirah in that city, דלא לימטי אסא וגידמא לבי הלולא ובטבלא, that that year the whole city should be like an aveilut, because Rav passed away. So what should they do? That they shouldn't bring, they used to bring to a chatanah, they used to bring like hadasim, and they used to bring all kinds of things to to dance in front of, and and bells. So they made that that year you shouldn't do it. And אזל איהו, and this guy went, and he did bring אסא וגידמא לבי הלולא ובטבלא. Therefore, טרקיה חויא, that's why a snake bit him. And what happened in the end? Finally he died. There you go, against the chachamim. I mean, it looks to me he wasn't doing an aveirah, like... Not an aveirah, against the chachamim, yeah. The chachamim said something and you go against... That's worse. That was enough. He got killed against a מנהג חכמים. It's not a, it's not a דין דרבנן. No, but when the beit din, or the rav of the city makes a gezeirah, that's a din, yeah. You have to listen to it, and he didn't, so... So he pashut died. Same thing when when the rabbanim come out with a pesak. Yeah, you have to listen to it, absolutely. They are more strict than de'oraita. There are some de'oraita that you wouldn't necessarily get... Right, it says it says, the Eibershter says, \"חמורים עלי דברי סופרים.\" Words of the rabbanan are more chamur to me. \"עריבים עלי\", I love more the words of the chachamim than I love the words of Torah. What about in the case of where the rabbanim say don't buy an apartment in...? Somebody buys an apartment...? Is it in danger of...? A little different. That's, now we're talking about nowadays. Should they? Same thing, of course, דעת תורה is... It's a little different with with the pesak. There are too many opinions, how can you... Did it come out as a, as a, as a, as a, did it come out as a pesak or as a... At that time, maybe what do you mean, you talk about when שיכון חב״ד came out? There was one rav in the community. It came out as, it came out as, he hasn't made this like issur to take, but it was a... They asked him, I remember, Rav Shimon, how long is the issur, yeah? What did he say? Over here it'll become בטל by itself. What? It'll become בטל by itself. After a while it gets it gets... Forgot. Got, gets forgotten, yeah. Okay, so the

How to Remove a Snake Wrapped Around You

Gemara continues: האי מאן דכרכיה חויא, if a snake surrounded a person, now, the question is, he didn't bite you yet, but any wrong move you make, he'll bite you. What you have to do is get him off of you. How do you get him off? So this is what you should do: לינחית למיא, go into the water, ולישקול דיקולא ארישא, and take a basket, put it on the head of the snake, ולהתכי מניה, and then start picking it up slowly, and when you pick it up the snake, what will make happen is the snake will start crawling into the basket, and when the snake crawls into the basket, וכי סליק ליה, when he goes on it, לישדיה למיא, throw the snake into the water, at least he can go away. If you can get into water. If you are in water, yeah. If you don't have water is a problem. You don't have a basket... It's another problem. They can swim. So the Gemara continues... There are certain snakes that don't bite, they just squeeze you to death. No, but this is not the one, I guess. It's not trying to... and maybe this, yeah, but he doesn't try to squeeze him, huh? They can swim. Yeah, but he'll he'll go away, so... It says here you're surrounded by snakes, yet you... Not by snakes, one snake. One snake, yet he goes into the water. How does he get... With the snake on. With the snake on you. No, with the snake on you, so I guess you go into the water, and get the snake off and then is on the water.

Escaping an Angry Snake with a Friend’s Help

האי מאן דמיקנפא ביה חויא, if a person that the snake is angry at him and he's trying to chase him, what do you do? Maybe he's hungry, not angry. No, the word means he's angry. You see he's trying to catch you, so he's like angry. אי איכא חבריה בהדיה, if you have a friend with you, לירכביה ארבעה גרמידי. So then, the problem is like this: if he's running after you, run away. He'll catch you. The snake will catch you? The snake will catch you, why? And even if you hide someplace, because when you walk, he smells your steps and he's able to follow where you are, he'll catch, he'll find you. So what do you do? So he says the best thing is, if you have a friend, let the friend take you on the shoulder and walk with you four אמות. Get in your car and drive. No, he's not chasing him. Not chasing his friend. Yeah, he's chasing this guy, the guy started, let's say the guy started up with him. So he's chasing this guy, so his steps will smell, but when it comes if he's, now his friend is holding him, so the next... steps, he sees he stopped, so he's gonna go away. Get on your bicycle, or drive your car. Yeah. Yeah. That's only if you have a friend around, you're not alone. אי לאי. And he can lift you up. And he can lift you up. אי לאי, if not, wants to know in case it happened, what should you do? לישד נאגרא, jump over a like a canal of water. Jump over, so then there are no steps anymore. אי לאי, if there's no river, you know like a canal, לעבר נהרא, go through a river, go across the river.

Nighttime Snake Defense: Jars, Cats, and Rattles

ובליליא, at night, what do you do? ליתי לפוריא אארבע חביתא, when you're gonna go, what's gonna happen is you're gonna go to sleep. He's gonna find you in your bed. So follow you, and he'll find you in your bed. So what you should do? Put your bed on four חב on four חביות, on four jars, on four barrels. Not rocks, barrels. Yeah. וניגני בכוכבי, and sleep outside under the stars. Why under the stars? Because if you're gonna sleep inside, you would why why should you put your bed on top of these jars? Because it'll be hard for him to get there, to realize where you are, to get there. What'll he do? He'll come on top of the roof, and he'll jump down on you. So sleep outside. There's no roof. With the jars? With the jars. Sleep Put your bed on four jars. No, not not on a tree under a tree. Not under a tree, right. Stars. What else But if אי לאי, still he can get to you, it'll be harder for him to get. Then ליתי ד' שונרי, bring four cats, וליסרינהו בארבע כרעי, and tie them to the four legs of your of your bed. Yeah. Okay, what do you do ווייטער? וליתי שחפי, bring Beer? No. bring branches that that's what's called rustle? rattle. Yeah, that rattle. ולישדי, and put them there. So that means that when the snake will come, it'll make noise, cuz if it's no, it is What'll happen when דכי שמעו קלי, when the the cats are gonna hear the noise that the snake is coming, אכלו ליה, they will eat him up. Right. Unless the snake bites the cat. Huh? Unless the snake bites the cat. I guess if that's Right. You mentioned This is a makeup for Wednesday what we
