Rabbi Yossi’s Claim About Not Looking at His Milah

איסתכל איסתכלתי במילה שלי. I never looked at my milah. Rabbi Yosi is greater than the Kohen Gadol, so he seems to on Yom Kippur every Kohen Gadol, the Gemara איני, it's not so? How could you say he was the one that didn't look? אמרו אמרו ליה לרבי, they once said to רבי, מאי טעמא קרו לך רבינו הקדוש, why did they call you our holy רבי? אמר להם, so he said to them, because מימי לא נסתכלתי במילה שלי, I never looked at my milah. And it seems like that was an exception, that Rabbi had it. They didn't call They called him Rabbeinu Hakadosh, they didn't call Rav Rabbeinu Hakadosh, it's a chasimah that Rav did not reach that madregah. And the Gemara answers, ורבי, מילתא אחריתי הוה ביה, it wasn't just that, by Rabbi something else. Not only did he not look, שלא הכניס ידו תחת אבנטו, he never put his hand lower than his gartel, never put his hand down on the bottom and the second half of his body. ואמר רבי יוסי, another thing that Rabbi Yosi said, מימי לא ראו קורות ביתי אימרי חלוקי. The walls of my house never saw the the the the seams the seams of my of my shirt, undershirt. Why? Because he always would get undressed under the cover, so when he took it off, the seams were under the cover and then when he took it out, that wasn't revealed already. ואמר רבי יוסי, another thing that Rabbi Yosi says Doesn't it say that like in Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch that that's how everyone is supposed to do it? So, when you look at Shulchan Aruch, does it mean that like that I mean, it says like in Shulchan Aruch that you're supposed to do something, is it and you don't do that exactly that way, is that like What does that What does that mean? Then you're not keeping what it says in Shulchan Aruch. Now

When Halacha Meets Minhag: Shulchan Aruch Rules

there are certain things which depends on minhag hamakom, that's something else, but other thing, most things, it says it says, you have to do it. A woman said the walls never saw her uncovered hair. Kimchis. And because of that she was zachah to have Kohanim Gedolim, seven sons Kohanim Gedolim. Big maalot since four had died. Yeah, it was one of the How could you have seven sons Kohanim Gedolim? Because every year someone died, so her own children, every year he died, and then the next son took over. But lo davka died, but sometimes the Kohen Gadol was sick on Yom Kippur, so they had to appoint another person, and he remained in the level of a Kohen Gadol, even though he's called a כהן גדול שעבר, he's not a כהן גדול שעובד, but he's still the level of a Kohen Gadol. That could happen, so could be a few times happened that they needed a substitute, and her children, some of her children did it. It doesn't imply they were the ones that bought their way in and they weren't zachah and It doesn't No, that doesn't seem like it, it's saying it a maalah on her, yeah. Right, it's a maalah. ואמר רבי יוסי, רבי יוסי said, מימי לא עברתי על דברי חבירי, I never went against my chaverim. If the other chachamim told me to do something, I never went against it, and he gave an example. Not that he did, but what what he would have done: יודע אני בעצמי שאיני כהן, I know I'm not a kohen. אם אומרים לי חבירי, עלה לדוכן, אני עולה. If my friends would tell me, \"Go up to duchan\", I would go. I know I'm not a kohen, but if my chaverim say it, I gave with this cuz they trusted that if they said it, it's definitely the right thing to do no matter what. So even if he's not a kohen? In other words, even as far as he's concerned he's not a kohen, but if they tell him to go, mistama they know he is a kohen. Is that allowed? Huh? How are you allowed? Yeah, but he assumed that since they told him that, mistama they knew that he was a kohen. Huh? No. How would you expect What did he say? If this would happen, I would do it. How would I do it? Cuz then I would have assumed, had they said that to me, I would have assumed that I'm I'm am a kohen. I'm not am a kohen, even though I didn't know. See, this

Trusting the Rebbe Over Written Law

שטיקל מגיד is a famous story that the Rebbe brought more than once, since brought in Shivchei HaAri zal on the HaAri zal, once told his talmidim on Friday afternoon, \"Let's You want to go to Yerushalayim for Shabbos?\" Imagine from Tzfat. They would go with קפיצת הדרך. So they said to him, \"We have to go ask our wives.\" So he said, \"Too late. If you're going to ask, then it's too late.\" If they had said yes, we would have gone, Mashiach would have come, and you're too late. So the Rebbe says, from here we see that ai, al pi Shulchan Aruch they were right? Al pi Shulchan Aruch you have to go ask your wife. So the way some guys write it, it's meshugaim, the heading I saw this story written, the heading was, \"You don't have to listen always to the Shulchan Aruch.\" Meshuga'at! But what it means is that you have to have so much trust in your Rebbe that if he says, obviously he knows that al pi Shulchan Aruch it's okay. Ai, as far as I'm concerned, the way I think, it doesn't seem like it, so you don't know everything. You have to have so much belief, so much emunah in the Rebbe. Why isn't this an example of what Rabbi Yehoshua to go on Yom Kippur according to his calculation? It's not the same, cuz there the din is that whatever the בית דין פסקן's, that becomes the halachah, even if it's against halachah. Here, the story is different. Here, we assume that he probably knew the halachah. There the din is, according to Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabban Gamliel's cheshbon was wrong, and nevertheless, even according to Rabbi Yehoshua, it turned out that's that's Yom Kippur. That's what Rabbi Akiva told him. But here, it's Yeah, so right, so some generation something got mixed up and they thought they're not a kohen. It could happen. But somehow he was maybe his great-grandfather was So maybe they investigated, but he says his friends are such tzadikim, such great people that I trust what they say that they know what they're talking about. Like the Rebbe. If the Rebbe says something to do, you do it. Sometimes the Rebbe, when he entered a pidyon he would add a name in a way cause of his, in his, his brother's children. So, I don't know, he said, \"Where did you get the name?\" She didn't even know her name was that? I know. So, recently he went and looked in the old cemetery who she was named after and really. So, she was named that name forever? She didn't know it, but. She forgot. She didn't know it. Yeah, right. Yeah. שההלכה לא בשמיים היא. שהיה ויכוח בין הרבנים, הם. Right, right. So, you didn't see they understood it not because it means ruach hakodesh, they probably knew it because of halacha. But they, it says if they would tell me, I would trust them 100% that they know al pi halacha this is the right thing to do, even though I don't. Yeah, if they would tell him. This never happened, he's just saying a theory, if this would happen. I would become a kohen, yeah. They say a story with the Alter Rebbe, that there was somebody the Alter Rebbe told him you're a kohen and he wasn't. From then on he went to duchen, he got aliyot as a kohen. I forgot already which chasid, the name. I do remember the story of the Rebbe. No, he didn't figure out, but the Rebbe told him he's a kohen, so he. I heard the Rebbe sent someone a letter and at the heading of the letter he wrote his name hakohen. So, he wrote to the Rebbe back, \"So, the Rebbe says I'm a kohen.\" So, the Rebbe answered him three things. I only remember one. לשון הגמרא: על מנה שבשטר הם עדים. It says בנגע if you have two עדים sign a שטר. It says Reuven borrowed money from Shimon and it says Reuven hakohen borrowed money from Shimon and the two עדים sign. So, the Gemara says, \"You can't say now we have two עדים signed that this guy is a כהן. They're not signing he's a כהן, they're signing on a loan. על מנה שבשטר הם עדים. So the Rabbi Yosi

Signing Documents and the Gemara on Kohen Status

wrote on himself also that when he signed the letter, he didn't sign it on the name. So, you can't take it from me. The secretary typed it, yeah. Right, so the רבי didn't cross it out, or didn't. So that's why he wrote it. Two more things he wrote, but he wrote him, one thing is, quoted the Gemara: על מנה שבשטר הם עדים. There's also that that story with this guy that wanted to get a divorce and the Rebbe said, \"Go speak to your mother.\" And his mother actually was not a Kohen, he was adopted. Yeah. had such eyes any mistakes would always stick on the spot. Yeah, the Rebbe would catch all the mistakes, even small things. Small things. But sometimes he would rely on the secretaries that they probably checked it, or he didn't mind. He said when he answered him See, על מנה שבשטר הם עדים. No, if he would write it, the word Kohen, then it's different. He didn't write it, it was typed. Then he's a Kohen, you wouldn't even ask.

Living Without Regret or Lashon Hara

ואמר רבי יוסי רבי יוסי said, מימי לא אמרתי דבר וחזרתי לאחורי. I never said something and had to regret it. It was ever I said was everything thought through and I never regretted it. Because lechatchilah I looked into it to make sure that it's I mean there is another vort it's not a real pshat. Another pshat. I never said anything, and I turned around and I saw. Sometimes you say things about somebody, you don't realize he's standing there. And you turn around and he says he says, מימי לא אמרתי דבר וחזרתי לאחורי I never turned around and because I never spoke lashon hara, I never did anything bad that I should be afraid that maybe he's behind Looking over my shoulder. shoulder, yeah. Cause that happens sometimes, it's very very uncomfortable when that happens. In other words, he's, he wasn't afraid to say something and somebody Right, I never had to be afraid that maybe he'll be standing behind me. Cause if the guy was there, No, because I never say anything bad. I only if I say something not nice, then I'm always have to think wait, he might be standing there. I never said anything that I should be afraid that if I turn around, it's going to be embarrassing. 50 years ago, I wrote a pidyon about the sound with kids a lot of things. These people knew nothing from. The Rebbe, \"How you going to go talk to these people?\" So the Rebbe said at the end, the Rebbe writes me, \"וה' יהיה עם פיך.\" Really? Like, \"Papa, what does it mean here?\" Nothing. וה' יהיה עם פיך, no, you'll know what to say. לא אמרתי דבר וחזרתי The pashut pshat means I know. The pashut pshat, yeah, the pashut pshat I never had charatah for what I said. Never regret what I said. I'm saying there's another pshat it says another simple So yeah, I never said וחזרתי לאחורי, I turned around, I have to be afraid I'll turn around and find they find that I said. They say it a little bit differently here that what he, if you would say, if he would say something negative about somebody, he wouldn't be afraid that somebody confronted him, he could tell him to his face. זה shtikel, yeah. Lashon hara זה. The idea is the same. No, there's, not what he, but if he said it, he felt he had a right to. But still. So there's no, therefore, even if it's negative, sometimes you're allowed to say something negative. Even if I say something negative, I wasn't afraid if they confront me, why, because I have a reason to say it. And not, because if you say something negative and you shouldn't be saying it, and if someone confronts you, you feel bad, and you know, you're embarrassed. Or you shouldn't have said it because it might be... Never mind. You know

Yiftach’s Unreleased Vow and Its Release

Yiftach? After the war he said, anything come first I see, Yeah, but that was a neder. But the רבנים אמרו לשחרר אותו מהנדר, Right, but he didn't want. לא רצה. Yeah, because he was an am ha'aretz. Am ha'aretz. Yeah. Yasher koach, yasher koach. העלה אותו לעולה.
