Introduction and reading the last lines

started already yesterday קמ״ד ע״ב, but we're going to read the last three lines. This was all the בהמשך of the story that Chaviva bar Abba and Rav Asi were sitting in front of Rabbi Yochanan, and Rabbi Yochanan was dozing off and he asked them a few questions and they gave answers, and Rabbi Yochanan overheard it. When he woke up, he said: Didn't I tell you that if you don't know the answer, don't say anything? You guys said wrong answers. So they asked him: Can you give us the right answers? So he started giving it. So what were the questions? One question is why were the birds, chickens of Bavel fatter? But the answer they gave him before was, go I'll show you in Aza, in Eretz Yisrael if they're eating fatter, and he gave the answer because they didn't go to galut. Because if you go to galut, you're not in your place, then you have In Bavel? Right. Now, the ones from Bavel didn't leave anywhere. The ones from Eretz Yisrael Bavel was galut. Yeah, but the birds from Bavel lived in Bavel to begin with. Oh. The ones from Eretz Yisrael, we quote the first pesukim, were chased away, went all all the behemot, everything went to Bavel. Okay, then we're holding here in the middle of the fourth line from the קמ״ד ע״ב.

The impurity of the Babylonians

One of the questions he asked, מפני מה בבליים זוהמין? Why are the בבליים dirty, tame'dik dirty? So he answered, מפני שלא עמדו על הר סיני, because they were not there by Har Sinai. שבשעה שבא נחש על חוה, because when the snake, when he wanted when he convinced Chava to eat from the עץ הדעת, besides doing that, it says בא עליה, he had relations with her. So when he did that, הטיל בה זוהמא, he put into Chava a זוהמא. And that זוהמא continued in all generations, to the children. Now, ישראל שעמדו על הר סיני פסקה זוהמתן, the Yidden who stood by Har Sinai, by Har Sinai their זוהמא left them. But the בבליים שלא עמדו על הר סיני, the Bavelim goyim, didn't stand by הר סיני, לא פסקה זוהמתן, their זוהמא didn't go away. These are goyim in Bavel? Yeah, goyim, we're talking about the goyim. אמר ליה רב אחא בריה דרבא לרב אשי, so Rav Acha the son of Rava said to Rav Ashi: גרים מאי? What about the gerim? Lichora the gerim also didn't stand by Har Sinai? אמר ליה, so he said, no, they did. אף על גב דאינהו לא הוו מזלייהו הוה, they takeh weren't there because they were not Yidden, but their mazal, which means the מקור of their neshama was there. You see, because it says No, this is goyim. Oh, this is goyim, goyim, yeah, yeah. Okay. You see, because it says, את אשר ישנו פה עמנו עומד היום, that he made the Eibershter made the covenant, the brit, with those who are here with us today, ואת אשר איננו פה, who are not here, but the neshamot are there. Actually, in Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer it says the לשון, אפילו נשמת הגרים, נשמות הגרים, they were all there, so mimela they were there too. So the the קללה was taken off of the goyim then? Again, it was not, no, the זוהמא went away by the Yidden. And the gerim also are part of the Yidden. Anyone who has a neshama stood by Har Sinai. I hear him, I thought you said goyim. No, gerim, gerim. So their זוהמא goes away by the when they do the the conversion? When? Right, right, that's right. Well, otherwise Because it never goes away. I mean, they're new people. They're new, so they're they're Just like our זוהמא went away by Har Sinai, so when it's when you're born, you're born a goy. They were there with their potential to be Jews. Yeah, but then when they became gerim, כקטן שנולד דמי, they're born, they're born Jewish. It's a new person. The old So, when did the זוהמא go away? The old מציאות doesn't exist, and it's a new person. Even for gerim today, you're saying? The gerim today, their when they're מגייר, that's as if they were born Jewish today. The goyim still have that זוהמא? Yeah. Yeah. Why does it mention only the בבליים? It should be all the, I mean the other three things were like specific to בבל, now it's saying Actually, it wasn't. They're all, everything versus ארץ ישראל. They were in בבל, so they spoke about בבל. It's all versus ארץ ישראל. So, and all the animals Yeah, also, all these things were gegangen. The only thing is, in a different place the Gemara says that by מתן תורה, by הר סיני, the זוהמא, the טומאה left the אידן. חטאו בעגל חזרה זוהמתן. When they did with the עגל, so the זוהמא came back. But this is one of the re'ayot to the Zohar. The Zohar says that even though the זוהמא came back, not the same way as it was before. So mimela, it's סוף כל סוף, the זוהמא had left, came back a little bit or a certain degree. שאין כן the גוים, it never left. Is that the kind type of טומאה that can be transferred? Like the גוים have it to the children, not to touch them. Even if you touch them or anything? No, no, no, that's a different type of thing. It's a טומאה, it's not like טומאת מת or טומאת שרץ, it's a different type of טומאה. Spiritual, mind Every טומאה is spiritual, but this is complete. Mind of this once told over that when the alter, when he opened the yeshivah in Novhardok, and they had to buy bread, there were two bakeries to buy the bread from, one was from a Jewish bakery, a Jewish bakery And the other one was a גויישע bakery. Now the גויישע bakery, they would have somebody go in and throw in, like to start the fire, but it wouldn't be פת עכו״ם problems. But the problem, or should they buy from the Jewish bakery? There was chashad that some of the people there who work with the bread don't wash נעגל וואַסער. So he asked the Frierdiker Rebbe, what should they do? Should they buy by the גוים? A גוי has no problem with נעגל וואַסער. Or should they buy by the אידן, which maybe it's the רוח הטומאה of נעגל וואַסער? So the

The bakery dilemma: Jewish vs. non‑Jewish bread

Frierdiker Rebbe said, a איד אן נעגל וואַסער is רוח הטומאה, a goy is טומאה אליין. A goy is what? טומאה אליין. A goy is טומאה itself. A Yid is רוח הטומאה if he doesn't wash, and this is טומאה itself, I mean it says it. In my hometown, I remember, after Pesach, yeah, go to the goyishe bakery for bread. Right. Because they couldn't buy by the Yidden, because they couldn't make it. So in all the shtetlach, now you could, because you had no choice. But nowadays, you can't do this. People think you could do that now. Now there's a she'eilah of the ingredients. Then, ingredients was flour and water, there was no she'eilah of kashrut. The only she'eilah of goyishe, but if a goy, a baker, bakes this, it's only פת פלטר, so usually we don't eat it, but you can be mekel when you have no bereirah. Nowadays, you can't buy by a goyishe bakery. If it has a hechsher, then you could buy, but still, it's פת פלטר anyway, so bread that we don't eat. Then the Gemara does a פליגא דרבה בר בר חנה. This, he says, that the טומאה left by הר סיני, this is against, he's arguing against רבי אבא בר בר חנה. דאמר רבה בר בר חנה, אבא בר בר חנה said, עד שלשה דורות לא פסקה זוהמא מאבותינו. Up to three generations the טומאה didn't leave our אבות. But by the third it did. אברהם הוליד את ישמעאל, אברהם had ישמעאל. This was like, why did he have ישמעאל? Because there was still some טומאה left in him, and it turned into ישמעאל. יצחק הוליד את עשו, he had עשו. By the third generation, יעקב הוליד את י״ב שבטים, the 12 שבטים, שלא היה בהם שום דופי, nothing wrong. But עכ״פ, comes out from here that when did the טומאה leave? By Yaakov. And before we said the tumah left by Har Sinai. So it's a machloket when the tumah left. So prizes, a lot of these machlokot when we say מר אמר חדא ומר אמר חדא ולא פליגי, it's always farentfert that they're talking about different דרגות. There's a low, certain דרגא that left by Yaakov Avinu, and then there's a complete דרגא left by מתן תורה. Just like בכלל, when did a Yid get a neshamah? When did the Yidden start? When did Am Yisrael start? במתן תורה זענען זיי געווארן גרים. Huh? במתן תורה זענען זיי געווארן גרים. So when did it start, by מתן תורה? Nu, we always know Avraham was the first Jew, no? אחד היה אברהם, אברהם was the first Jew? There was דרגות. It started. The inyan of Torah, מתן תורה started by Avraham, בשני אלפים תורה. The year 2000 started already the inyan of Torah. And the year 2000 was when Avraham Avinu was 52 years old. So it started by Avraham, so it's דרגות. Or, like the Rebbe explains, there's a lot of different opinions, when did Avraham Avinu recognize the Eibershter? So the

Avraham’s early recognition of God

Gemara says, בן שלש שנים. The Gemara brings a פסוק, עקב אשר שמע אברהם בקולי, because Avraham listened to my voice. The word עקב is בגימטריא קע״ב, 172. Because only 172 years he listened to Hashem, he lived 175. The first three years he didn't, because by three years he did. Then other places it says that he was by 13, and then it says in the, the Rambam says by 40. So again, no setirah, there are different דרגות. The first הכרה he had, the first recognition was by three, and then it went on. Was three years old by Avraham Avinu as well as like Rivkah, Rachel, was that the same as a three-year-old? No, they were more mature, they were... She got married, Rivkah got married when she was three years old. A three-year-old woman can't produce a child. She couldn't, that's why they didn't they didn't daven to the אייבערשטער. She waited that she should become she became ראויה to have children, and then they waited 10 years and then davened. But they were different. Imagine the whole story with Eliezer Eved Avraham with Rivkah, how old was she? Three years old then. And she told him, \"I'm going to give you...\" He asked for the water, she said, \"Not not only you, I'll give the camels.\" The whole thing he saw in her, that she was just a little baby. But obviously those years is what... She was two and a half, could be. Huh? Oh. Okay. Schlep all that water at three years old? Yeah. And she had the כד, she had the the jar, carrying her כד. Okay.

The ten tribes, wine, and exile

אמר רב חלבו, Rav Chelbo said, חמרא דפרוגייתא, the wine of the place called P'rugita, very good wine, a geshmacke wine, ומייא דדיומסת, and the special water from Diomset, which is also special, Rashi says salty water, special water, healthy water, קיפחו עשרת השבטים מישראל, that schlepped away the ten שבטים from the אידן. This goes according to the opinion that the שבטים the ten שבטים never came back, they got mixed, intermarried with the גוים. What caused it? Because they came to these places, and they got they indulged in גשמיות, and they drank the best wine, and they and they, yeah, the these, all kinds of גשמיות. And that Huh? Mineral water. And that's what made them become loose, and we lost the עשרת השבטים because of it. of that. But they'll be returned. How will they be returned? No, this says יבוא משיח, ingathering of all... Yeah, yeah, yeah. They find, they think they'll be one of the... they consider אידן... The problem the problem is if they're אידן, it's a bigger problem. If they're גוים, it's a whole, they usually say ממזרים, that's the problem. That's the whole problem they had with the Falashas, with the Ethiopians. It's that if they're גרים, if they're גוים, it's good, you מגייר and you're a איד. If you're a איד, then it's a big problem. So the Rabbanut paskeded in Eretz Yisrael that they have to go through גיור לחומרא. So I remember Rav Leeder, I don't know if you remember Rav Leeder, was a big talmid chacham I think. With the אב בית דין of the Agudat Harabanim. So he screamed, \"גיור לחומרא? It's גיור לקולא!\" You're מקיל and you're and you're letting them be מגייר. Huh? Yeah, the Bnei Yisrael they call them, it's all the same. Same with the with the Karaim, huh? They're not going for giyur in Yisrael. It's a problem, sure. It's a big problem, yeah. The Rebbe was very much, when that came out that all the schools, the Lubavitch schools, if they don't through go through at least giyur, shouldn't take them into the schools. And the Lubavitch schools in Eretz Yisrael are ממלכתי דתי, they're public schools. They're funded by the government. So one school actually got closed because of that. The Rebbe said, \"Let them close the school. We can't...\" That's how strong the Rebbe was. Actually, the Rebbe writes in a letter to somebody that he started investigating and doing research on this and he saw which direction it's going, so he stopped. Stopped what? Doing the research. Stopped what? Stopped doing the research. Who, the Rebbe? He writes in a letter... I don't know. Which is the worst? Why would he stop if it were... Whether they're or not, I don't know, I don't know. They claim they're from Moshe Rabbeinu, Moshe Rabbeinu was a king in Ethiopia for 40 years. After he ran away from Mitzrayim, he went to, first he was a soldier in the army, then he became the king. What what do you do? I mean, so they're now, I know. Even their marriages. They should go through giyur. And the the Rabbanim pasked that if they go through giyur, you... Yeah, this I know, yeah. But the sheilah with the Karaites is the same sheilah. Same sheilah? It's a big machloket whether they're Yidden or goyim. Huh? Well, but they still have a community. Actually, I once asked I once asked Reb Moshe a sheilah. I didn't speak to him, but it was somebody with a sheilah came up. Person was, he was married already, and she was having a baby. They found out he's a, yeah, they found out he's a Karaite. What's a Karaite? Karaite. Karaite. So I got to Reb Moshe. And this is what answer I got: that because she's already expecting a child, so be meikil, so he said, \"We'll be meikil and tell them to go through giyur, and then it'll be okay.\" But you can't do giyur in order to get married. In order to be, in order to take into the Jewish... Yeah, but if they're married already, what's like a goy, a non-religious Jew is married. We try to first you got to try to get them to divorce, but if it doesn't work, you try to make him מגייר כהלכה. Because the גרות is a כשר'ה גרות, לכתחילה we don't accept it, but better than living as a goy. But nevertheless, yeah, they're they're gerim, that's The worst problem is if he's a if he's a Kohen. How would he be a Kohen? No, somebody married a somebody married a shiksa. Oh, if she's if she's a Karaite or something, you mean. He's a Kohen, he's a Kohen, and married and then lived with her, I mean. Same with Becoming a baal teshuvah and And but she is the problem. She's the Yeah, I know it's Well, I remember a whole story in 30 years ago at the Moshav, Yeah. someone that couldn't go back. So the Rebbe told them to live in different countries. Oh, you mean to get divorced. Yeah. Bichlal, what about could be a baal teshuvah who married a gerushah? He's a Kohen, and then after being 20 years married, he becomes a baal teshuvah. What do you do? I know such a story, had to get divorced, there's no there's no etzah. Sometimes they find an etzah that maybe he's not a Kohen really. I know also of Reb Moshe pasked on one case, it was a maaseh in Philadelphia. And what? In Philadelphia. So then they found out that he So then Reb Moshe Reb Moshe asked him, \"How do you know you're a kohen?\" A frey, not frum, his father wasn't frum. Said, \"How do you know you're a kohen?\" \"Well, my father told me he remembers when he was a kid, epes he used to come up to duchen'n, he thinks it.\" So gornisht mit gornisht, that's why he said you're not a kohen and that's it. So you first of all you have to have Reb Moshe to do that. He gave up the kehunah. You can't give up the kehunah. Goyishe vil, so that you're not a kohen. You can't give up. If you're a kohen, you're a kohen. What can you do? Can you give up being one? No, why did he give up the kehunah? There's no such thing? No. I thought that had to do with that if a kohen marries a giyoret, then you traded it in to like be What? You can say posel him that They As long as he's married to her, we don't let him do things. Beis Hamikdash, they wouldn't let him do the avodah. And if he divorces her, he's allowed to. And not only that, if he makes a neder that I'm going to divorce her, already he's allowed. So, it's not that he becomes stained. That's the רבנן said, \"Don't let him to\" But there's no stickers. Even if you're a kohen, You can find out that you're not a kohen. One second. יכול להיות a שאינה זרעו של אברהם, a frey. Yeah. Yeah. So the child is a goy? If there's a child? The child is a goy. No, no. And then, okay, then they became baalei teshuvah, right? So the, yeah. Now, the kohen, does he give all of that up, too? Yeah. How can they still live? Why? You're not allowed to live with each What do you mean by that? A kohen, a kohen that was married to a goyah, let's say, don't know and then they become baalei teshuvah and she's megayeret. She became a giyoret. A giyoret. If a giyoret, so he has to But I'm saying even further. Not even a giyoret. A a a Yid, a frey Yid who's married, who's a kohen, who married a גרושה. He married a divorcée. It was frey, he didn't care. Now, when he became a baal teshuvah and she became a baalat teshuvah, they can't continue being married. I know of a case. This is a this is a tragic story, but that's but that's Common. Yeah, there's nothing he can do. Now, sometimes you could find out that he's not a kohen. You could find out how he's going to get rid of the כהונה. Or you find out, how do you know you're a כהן? There's another thing: if his father married a גרושה, then he's a חלל. A חלל כהן. Or they say some, but this is we don't do that, but some say they ask a the כהן, \"Your mother learned in you know the mother, they were not frum, learned in college?\" \"Sure.\" \"Oh.\" \"Then she's definitely פסול to a כהן and therefore you're פסול, a חלל.\" But you can't, we can't use a blanket statement. A חלל would laugh Yeah. All college girls Yeah, חלל is not כהן. חלל loses all the כהונה. Huh? All college girls are not virgins anymore? I knew he was going to That's for sure. All college girls? Not virgin doesn't matter. As long as she was If she only was with a Yid, it doesn't matter. Doesn't make her פסול. If she was with a גוי, but there's definitely a חשש. And if there's a חשש, so that's to say to make a blanket statement, that that's not אשכנזים. But it's very easy to happen that you find out that she was once with a גוי, then she's פסול to a כהן and the child that comes from that כהן and she, he's a חלל now. So he's a חלל, you know? Okay, I think we Yeah.
