Wisdom and Age: Positive Perspective

מר חכמה, שנאמר it says בישישים חכמה. When you're ישיש, you're old, you have חכמה. ואורך ימים תבונה, you have long years you're תבונה. That's a positive word. אה? עם הארץ, he says the opposite, כל זמן שמזקינין טפשות נכנסת בהן. I explained before they're talking about old age. Oh, I thought you didn't talk about this thing. So as you get old you get stupid, עמי הארצים. שנאמר it says מסיר שפה לנאמנים וטעם זקנים יקח, that when we are זקנים, then the Aibershter takes away the taste, in other words, you don't have it. So like I explained last time, even though it doesn't mention in the first one תלמידי חכמים, doesn't mention in the second one עמי הארצים, but the Gemara itself understands, if there's a סתירה, one פסוק says it adds חכמה, and one פסוק says it takes away חכמה, אבנא לא פארשטיין that the good one, the תלמידי חכמים add, and this takes away. Then there's a פסוק that says, בנוגע when you get old, something like this: גם מגבוה ייראו, that when you get old, you're afraid even from something high. What does that mean? שאפילו כרכושית קטנה, even a small, little mountain, דמיא עליו כהרי הרים, looks like, eppes, a gigantic mountain. וחתחתים בדרך, and you will be afraid on the way. What does that mean? בשעה שמהלך בדרך, when you're old and you go on the way, נעשה לבו תלמים תלמים, and your your heart is it gets very, you're full of fear wherever you go, and the word חתת means fear, so this is the שורש חתחתים. And then it continues It's because they could fall down, old people. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There they could fall down, they don't see so good, so they don't see what's on the floor. Bichlal, you get very nervous when you travel. I feel, look, I'm already nervous. When I travel, I'm nervous, not so old yet. You're not old, what's that? So, see?

Physical Deterioration: Spoiled Bones and Weight

וינאץ השקד, and the שקד gets spoiled, whatever. What is this, also goes in a certain part of the body, זו קליבוסת, so Rashi says it's the bone by the case where the ירך is is Oh, the femur. The coccyx. The hip. Ribs. So there it it already goes down, good. ויסתבל החגב, אלו עגבות, and it says that the חגב, it means is is becomes, לשון stupid, bad, אלו עגבות, the behind, the הינטן becomes heavy, feels like a weight, like something that you're carrying a heavy weight, you can't carry. ותפר האביונה, and the אביונה gets gets thrown, gets, what is אביונה, זו חמדה, that's the taavah that a person normally has, תאוות נשים goes away. Then the Gemara tells that רב כהנא הוה פסיק סידרא קמיה דרב, At least good for a woman, no? Ah, well, you see. Rav Kahana was being מסדר פסוקים in front of Rav. כי מטא להאי קרא, when he came to this פסוק, נגד ואיתנח, he sighed. אמר, he said, שמע מינה, so Rav Kahana said, I mean Rav said, שמע מינה דבטלי חמדה דרב רב חסדא רב חסדא, who was it, Rav Kahana said, שמע מינה דבטלי חמדה דרב. Shows that Rav already is at that level that the old chemdah, the taavah is not there. The taavah's gone away. So mashma that it is a bad thing.

David's Fast and the Loss of Desire

Well, David David Hamelech fasted until it was lost. Well, how old how old was he? It says after forty it starts to taavah, could be, doesn't mean bad. Not everything this is bad, this is the Eibershter makes this nature, and it could be used for good, for kids, in in ruchniyut there's so much, you know, ענינים רוחניים in it, עד כדי כך that in Kabbalah, everything in Kabbalah is compared to this. Yichud from זו״ן ומלכות, ah, גם שיר השירים that's a mashal only. What about David Hamelech? No, it says he killed the yetzer hara. He's restraint. Huh? Yeah, restraint, no, the desire, no, the desire, no more desire, so mimela like this this desire could be used is a bad thing because it could be used for good. I didn't say that, I'm saying it could be used for good. It says, I mean, every time that by the tzadikim, by the great tzadikim, there was ייחודים למעלה, it was ממש המשכה יחוד קודשא בריך הוא ושכינתיה, so it's not pashut. It was gone for a while. And yeah, but overall They tied him up and poked his eyes out? No, they just, they got rid of it, they tied him up and they poked his eyes out. So, they tried, but the first time, when they couldn't find a fresh egg in Yerushalayim. אמר רב כהנא, Rav Kahana said, מאי דכתיב, what is found in the פסוק, it says כי הוא אמר ויהי, he said and that's how it is. זו אשה, that's a woman. The Gemara will explain. You know, the Eibershter said, and that's how it is. What he's trying to say is that it makes no sense for a person to have this ta'avah, in sechel. It's a ta'avah that you have, you've been feeling, but there's no real reason, they're going to say why. הוא צוה ויעמד, he commanded, that's how it is, אלו בנים, to have children. And he says, תנא, we learned, אשה, what's really a woman when it comes to these ענינים, חמת מלאה צואה. A kaparah afn zayn shvoger, yeder darf nit oplakhn fun zikh aleyn, vayl er vi azoy taytshte er, nu? Er zogt azoy: there's something there, the fact the ta'avah of an אשה, that's only because the Eibershter said. And he says because al pi sechel, it makes no sense. Ta'avot ha'achilah makes sense, it's a good geshmaka zach, but this, he says, why? Why? אישה חמת מלא צואה. Yeah, an אישה באמת, what you have to look at her? What's be'emet? In Tanya he brings this Gemara. Yeah, the Tanya... the Gemara brings from Tanya. That she says, what is it? It's nothing, it's a human being. Look, a piece of flesh and it's something full of garbage. פיה מלא דם, her mouth, which doesn't mean her mouth, it means לשון נקיה, it's full of blood. So how come he runs, and everyone runs, what are we all for it? What is it? אלא מאי, the Eibershter put in, because הוא ציווה. Because the Eibershter said and he put into the teva such a ta'avah, but if you start thinking with sechel, what kind of a meshugene ta'avah is this? It's not... He doesn't want to eat, you know? It's not a ta'avah of eating. The Eibershter made it, it's a ta'avah of dying. But the Eibershter made mishpatim, mishpatim is al pi sechel, we can understand, we can't understand. The Eibershter made, we should know the same. Why did the Eibershter make it? In order to have children, have... הוא ציווה ויעמד, אלו בנים. So psychology is very simple, they said that a man just wants to return to the womb, he wants to return to his mother, he wants to return to where he was born. That's a Freudian psychology. That's Freud, yeah. Yeah, wants to return to the womb. He wants to return to home, where it's nice and warm and comfortable, and you're taken care of. Yes. I

Early Marriages of Rebbes and Chassidic Leaders

have to get married, so we're talking about getting married. I mean, they were already ingeshtelt. That's, bringing us to a chupah, and the older used to get married earlier. The Frierdiker Rebbe got married at seventeen. Huh? Yeah, the Rebbe was older, much older. Yeah, the other ones got 16, 15, or younger. Frierdiker was 17? What was it, younger? Tzemach Tzedek was 15. Yeah. He became, he became a chassan when he was very, very... not only the Tzemach Tzedek. Shikater Rav... Shikater Rav was only a baby in the crib. The Alter Rebbe touched his head, and he said, \"Oh, he is good for my einikl.\" So the Mitteler Rebbe, his daughter was married to the Shikater, because the Alter Rebbe chose him as a baby. In the old days, used to become a chassan when you were a kid. Or the famous, a lot of stories with the Divrei Chaim. The Divrei Chaim became a chassan when he was 6, 7, 5, 6-year-old, I don't know. He didn't, he didn't even know. He comes home, he sees a mesibah in the house, a party. He says, \"What's going on here?\" He says, \"You're a chassan.\" \"Okay.\" He didn't even know. Someone makes, plays a joke with him, and says, \"aderaba, tell me, who's your mechutan, who's your shver? Who's your future shver?\" Looks, and looks, and looks. \"This guy.\" \"How did you know?\" He said, \"I don't like him already.\" דאך איז עלטער. They say that they called, they called Rabbi Hillel, they called Rabbi Hillel der, der, the Chol Hamoed. Because he wore a talis without tefillin. He wasn't bar mitzvah yet, and he got married. So he used to wear a talis like Chol Hamoed. These people are in higher, you know. You see the Chasam Sofer had a talmid, a top talmid, he wasn't bar mitzvah yet. Once the Chasam Sofer said a shiur, and this guy, this kid, asked him a kashya, and he אים אפגעשלאגן. So he said, wie geht das an? A יום כיפור פרעסער זאל מיר אפשלאגן? Someone who eats on Yom Kippur, should schlaug me out? Who was that at such a...? I don't remember his name, yeah. Yeah, that's what he said, \"A יום כיפור פרעסער זאל מיר אפשלאגן?\" Okay. Then the pasuk says, it's on the same line, כי הולך אדם אל בית עולמו. So the person goes to his, to בית עולמו, to the other world. אמר רבי יצחק, רבי יצחק said, מלמד שכל צדיק וצדיק נותנין לו מדור לפי כבודו, every tzadik when he comes lemalah they give him a place according to his kavod. So, when they go, when a person dies, everyone dies equally, but when they get l'maaleh, then each one gets his place. משל למלך בשר ודם, משל a king, a גשמיות'דיקע king, שנכנס הוא ועבדיו לעיר, when he comes with his people to the city, כשהן נכנסין, כולם בשער אחד נכנסין, when they come in they all go in the same gate. But כשהן לנין, when they give them places to sleep over, כל אחד ואחד נותנין לו מדור לפי כבודו, everyone gets according to his kavod. Same thing here, they all go in l'maaleh the same way, but there they get different kavod. אמר רבי יצחק, רבי יצחק, מאי דכתיב, what is written in the pasuk where it says, כי הילדות והשחרות הבל? הבל? I don't, I didn't see, I can't see here. Reminds me הבל and הבל, a maaseh with the, with the Apter Rav, you know the maaseh with the Apter Rav? The Apter Rav, before he was a rav in Apta he was a rav in Kalbasov. In Kalbasov they had a rav, and the rav died, so they're looking for a new rav. So there's people that had, a חשוב'ע... שטעלע, so they different rabbanim came to it. No one could pass. Why? Because there was one פרנס החודש, one president of the קהילה, am ha'aretz gamur, was a rich man, he was a, and had to go by him. So every candidate would have to eat by him, and he would farher him, and no one could answer his stupid questions. So the

The Apter Rav’s Test and Clever Answer

Apter Rav said, \"I'm going to go.\" So they said, \"But you're going to...\" \"No, no, don't worry, I'll go.\" He went, had a derasha first, and it was, you know, gevaldige. Then came the last stage, going to this guy. He sits down with this guy, testing him. \"Where does it say אז לבן took הבל to the akeidah?\" \"לבן took הבל to the akeidah?\" Thinks, you know, it says in the Haggadah, it says, \"לבן ביקש לעקור את הכל.\" The am ha'aretz couldn't read. לעקור, he thought it was a ד', לכד, and הכל as הבל. So he said, \"לבן ביקש לכד את הבל, he wanted to take הבל to the Akedah.\" He got the job. \"Like that answer.\" \"Like that answer, no, cuz that's what he meant, the Akedah, cuz the am ha'aretz didn't, he couldn't read.\" Something I read also, I said \"הבל\", they said \"הכל\", I couldn't understand \"הכל\". The chest is in. Yeah, it could be the... Pencil is getting smaller every year. \"כי הילדות והשחרות הבל\", so it says, the ילדות, when you're young, and שחרות, which is black, is הבל. So he טייטשט, \"דברים שאדם עושה בילדותו\", things a person does in his youth, \"משחירים פניו לזקנותו\", give him make his face black. And what does he mean here? So

Youthful Misuse and Its Consequences According to Rashi

Rashi says, \"אדם עושה בילדותו\" he does ריבוי תשמיש. And from a lot of תשמיש he gets sick. It says in, the Rambam says that that a thousand people die, 999 die because of ריבוי תשמיש. One person died of another disease. I mean that's the, the Rambam says. It's very, so it says. It says what did what did Shlomo Hamelech's mother tell him? Why, no, no, she punished, told him כל מוסר with, but one of the things she told him, \"אל תתן לנשים חילך.\" Don't give your koach, it means if you do it you're giving away your koach, that's all. Places with... that's a different thing. But here, but I'm not saying because it naturally changed, but but... So this this is tame, this is by the body or by the... אבל תורה מותש כוחו של אדם... Torah, yeah, Torah. But Torah, it says, is עוז ותושיה, it's both. The תורה עוז ותושיה. תושיה is שוואכקייט, עוז is שטארקקייט. Torah is שטארקקייט אויך. It's a ביידע זאך. ס'איז שוואך פאר'ן יצר הרע, און שטארק פאר'ן יצר טוב. Haha, there has to be an explanation. That's what it is. And then ma'aseh with Reish Lakish, no? Reish Lakish was a robber, so Rabbi Yochanan
