Carrying Less Than Four Cubits and Mutar

Giving to the person. You get two things. Shouldn't confuse this is one of not like here, but this is a Two things here. And one way is to carry it, stop is less than ד' אמות, start again, and there's another way: give it to somebody else. Go less than ד' אמות, hand it to the other guy, the other guy goes less than ד' אמות, then he hands it to another guy or even back to you. That's mutar. That is mutar. But yourself? Yeah. But yourself to go, that you're not allowed. But the Gemara says, this here the Gemara gives that עצה. Fregt di Gemara: אמאי לא ירדו חכמים אצל כיסו? Why didn't they want to tell him? So the Gemara says: משום there's a pasuk that says כבוד אלקים הסתר דבר וכבוד מלכים חקור דבר. There are certain things for the Eibershter's things, from Torah, that you have to hide. But when it comes to things of human beings, of of rich people, that חקור דבר, look into it. The Gemara asks: מאי כבוד אלקים איכא הכא? You're saying here there's for the כבוד of the Eibershter you should hide. What's the problem? What's the כבוד of the Eibershter that we cannot tell that you could walk, carry I mean, less than ד' אמות? The Gemara answers: דילמא אתו לאתויי ארבע אמות ברשות הרבים. It's a גזירה דרבנן. רבנן said that you shouldn't do it because you might carry complete ד' אמות. Zogt di Gemara: תניא, it says רבי אלעזר פחות מד' אמות? Obviously it's less. פחות, פחות means less. What about in a רשות הרבים? In a karmelit Still, still you can't. Huh? Still you can't. You mean a karmelit? Yeah. You can't, but it's a גזירה לגזירה? Yeah, it's a chumra. A lot of things a karmelit is a גזירה לגזירה, but we say it's not a גזירה לגזירה. Must be sticking out your head, depends if I agree with it whether it's a גזירה לגזירה. Tanya it says, this din that they made a gezeira that you're not allowed to carry פחות פחות, less and less than ד' אמות, it's one of the י\"ח דברים. It's one of the 18 things that they paskent like Beit Shammai. Beit Shammai made a gezeira, and Beit Shammai tried many things to that Beit Hillel always won. It was one day that Beit Shammai got the rov, they locked the doors, wouldn't let anybody out, and they passed 18 gezeirot, this is one of them. So Rabbi Elazar said: בו ביום גדשו סאה. That day they filled up the measurement, that means they did something proper. And רבי יהושע אומר: בו ביום מחקו סאה. That the day that they ruined the the Why? Because if you're too strict, then you גוזר גזירות that people can't take, it you know what happens? It makes them do עבירות בכלל. Sometimes you tell a person to do something it's only a hidur or extra, and you tell him you're not allowed to. So to him, you're not allowed to, and if he feels he can't do it, he has to do it, so automatically he says, if I could do this, I'll do other things too. If he knows that this is mutar, so this isn't, then... But if you tell him this is asur and this is asur, one is a de'oraita, one is a So if you tell them both equally, you know what he's going to do? So if he keeps, he keeps, but if he doesn't keep, not that, like, other guy would know, so this I won't keep, it's not so important, but this I will. But he, to him it's all the same. That's one of the problems with baalei teshuva. That's not the same That's a fence, I mean, that's all. No, a fence is not, but sometimes, you know, depends, it depends which. This is the problem with baalei teshuva. What What are the problems? No, yeah, certain problems you don't even realize. The problem is that we tell them a lot of things, and when they become baalei teshuva, they become very frum. So, they become very frum, so this they don't do, they accept all the the rest of the chumrot. And later, tammer if it weakens off, so what happens? Everything weakens. Why? Because to them everything was accepted in the same chumra, which is good. But if you feel that you're not close, so is But if you know that this is min hatorah and this is not But anyway in this case the machloket is whether they did a good thing by making the gezeira or a bad thing. Tanya we

Mashal of Rabbi Elazar vs Rabbi Yehoshua

learned: משל דרבי אלעזר למה הדבר דומה? What's the mashal of Rabbi Elazar? He said that they did something good, they put in a new gezeira and that was good. Give us a mashal: לקופה מלאה קישואין ודלועין, you have a basket full of melons, full of of gourds gourds gourds, yeah, אדם נותן לתוכה חרדל והיא מחזקת. If a person wants to put חרדל, חרדל, little little tiny beans of mustard, so since they're not tight, you know, they're laying on another, there's so much space in between, you put in and it'll all come in and it'll stay there. And that's what they they did. You need extra gezeirot, there's place for that too. But משל דרבי יהושע למה הדבר דומה? Rabbi Yehoshua claimed that it's no good: לערבה מלאה דבש, if you have a jar or some a jar a basin full of honey, נותן לתוכה רימונים ואגוזים, you put in pomegranates, put in nuts, היא מקיאה, it'll spill out. It's no good. So this is a משל that sometimes you add things is good, sometimes you add is worse. He says this was good, Rabbi Elazar, Rabbi Yehoshua says no. זאגט די Gemara: דרש Rav Ulla אפיסקא דבי נשיאה,

Rav Ulla on Dog Impurity Duration

Rav Ulla דרשנ'ד by the door of the נשיא's house: מאי דכתיב, what's the meaning of the פסוק where it says יודע צדיק דין דלים? The צדיק knows the דין of the poor. Who's the poor? יודע הקדוש ברוך הוא בכלב השם knows that the dog שמזונותיו מועטין doesn't have much food, לפיכך שוהה אכילתו במעיו ג' ימים. The Eibershter made it when he eats, the food doesn't get digested for three days, so it should keep it. Where do we see halachah that it's three days? Because תנן, like it says in the משנה, כמה תשהה אכילתו במעיו ויהא טמא? בכלב שלשה ימים מעת לעת. It says like this, what happens if a dog swallows a piece of flesh from a human being that's makes a person tamei? So while the dog is alive, that tumah is not metamei. Let's say if the dog is in the house, under one roof with me, even though he has tumah in his stomach, but that's called בית הסתרים, it's not metamei. If the dog dies, automatically, if the flesh inside is still flesh, he being in one house under one roof, you become tamei. How long since he ate the food do we consider it still that it's there? So by a dog, it's שלשה ימים מעת לעת, three complete days. ובעופות ובדגים, by birds and by fish, כדי שתיפול לאור ותשרף. As long as it takes to throw the piece of flesh a piece of meat into the fire and it's burned. Very short! But by a dog, it lasts for three days. Why? So he said because the Eibershter knows dogs don't have so much food. The things that they eat, they don't eat grass, they don't eat see and the בהמות could get more, mimela they are poor. So the Eibershter made it should be kept in them.

Rav Pappa on Feeding Dogs and Risks

אמר Rav Pappa... it was said, shema mina, from here we see, אורח ארעא למיתב אומצא לכלבא, it's a good thing to give a piece of meat to a dog. וכמה, how much should you give? אמר Rav Mari, משחא דאודנא, give him a little bit, the size of his ear. וחוטרא בתריה, and take a stick and kick him out. Why? Because if you don't, he'll come back to you. He knows that here he gets food. So give him a little bit, do the favor, and make sure he gets out of here. והני מילי בדברא, that's in the מדבר, אבל במתא, in the city, לית, don't give him anything, דאתי למיסרך, because if you give him once, it's חנפנ'ן, it's a חתכת סכנה to you and he'll come to you and he'll constantly come. You know that don't, just a stray dog or cats, you give them food, you'll have them around always. אמר רב פפא, Rav Pappa says like this, לית דעני מכלבא, there's nobody poorer than a dog, ולית דעתיר מחזירא, and nobody richer than a חזיר. Why? Because a חזיר eats dirt and eats all these and eats everything. So his food is available, with garbage this, but a dog doesn't eat those things, so and he needs special things and זאגט די Gemara ווייטער, another ענין לגמרי. Huh? We're talking about שרצים or סתם meat? No, meat, human meat. But tumah is by a person. Dogs are very picky about what they eat? Not picky, but they yeah it's harder to get to them the food that they that's shayach to them. זאגט די Gemara, כתוּב אפנקסיה דרבי יהושע בן לוי, they found written in the book, in the diary or in the book of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, and this is what he wrote,

Birth-Day Mazal: Traits Based on Weekday

האי מאן דבחד בשבא, whoever is born on Sunday, יהא גבר ולא חדא בי. So be גבר means a person, he'll be a a good person, but one middah not. He won't I would he won't have any not one he won't have any other middah. He'll be a אדם מן הישוב, בשלום, but he won't have anything else. The Gemara asks, מאי ולא חדא בי? What do you mean he won't have any other middah? אילימא ולא חדא לטיבותא, he's not going to have one good middah if you're born Sunday? והאמר רב אשי, didn't Rav Ashi, אנא בחד בשבא הואי, I was born on Sunday. Rav Ashi was a pretty good guy. אלא, it must be, דלא חדא לבישותא, that he will not have one bad thing. That means anybody who's born on Sunday will be only good. והאמר רב אשי, didn't Rav Ashi say, אנא ודימי בר קקוזתא הוינן בחד בשבא, me and Dimi bar Kakuzta were both born on Sunday. אנא מלך, I became the נשיא, והוא הוה ריש גנבי, he also became a head. He became the head of the gang, head of the גנבים. Al kol panim, he was a bad guy, so you can't say that you say if you're born on Sunday, you will not have even one middah of bad. This guy was bad. אלא the Gemara says, what does that mean? אי כולו לטיבותא אי כולו לבישותא, that's what it means. You will not have one and something else, you'll be or completely good, or completely bad. Now it doesn't mean you'll have to be that way, it means that there is a certain the mazal pushes you to be that way and you got to fight harder. Now why happens that on Sunday? Because מאי טעמא דאיברו ביה אור וחושך. On Sunday was created light and darkness. Or you're light or you're dark. Yeah. When you say Sunday, you're born at 8:00 on Sun- at night on Sunday, say, this Is it in the winter or summer? Yeah, I know it's Sunday. I mean is it is it still Sunday? Is it or is it Is it you know because the next day's The key is the night then. Right, after shekiyah, I'm saying, but what do we call, I'm saying Sunday is Sunday's till the shekiyah, fine. of normal like Like what's now? Now it's Tuesday or Wednesday? רביעי. Today is Wednesday. What's now is What is it? What is it? It's bein hashmashot right now, it's No, but I mean is it? No, it's tonight. If it'd be another five or ten minutes, then it's Wednesday. You see Wednesday we have You have to say it. אור ליום רביעי. Oh. But that's what they say. That's what they say, okay. Oh, but it could, yeah, some I mean you write it. Especially in a ketubah, this we don't write אור ליום, right? Going on. האי מאן דבתרי בשבא, someone that's born on Monday, יהא גבר רגזן. He'll be an angry guy. מאי טעמא, what's the reason? Yeah. When were you born? Monday. Monday. You were born on Monday? I think so. Were you born on? Yeah, I was. I was born on Sunday. Oh, so you have a trace of it? No. So he's only good. That's what I said. He's only bad for shortness, so he must be only good. You can't have a trace. If you have a trace of it, you can't A guy who was born on Monday will be a רגזן, will be an angry guy. מאי טעמא? משום דאיפליגו ביה מיא. That's the day that they separated the water. And when you're angry, you're an angry guy, you always, you know, separate with a guy. You scream at a guy, you don't like the other guys. Monday is no good. Monday. You say he was born on Wednesday? We'll see. We'll see in a second, we're not there yet. האי מאן דבתלתא בשבא, someone that's born on Tuesday, יהא גבר עתיר, will be rich, וזנאי יהא, right? He'll be a He'll be, he'll be involved in זנות. מאי טעמא? Why? משום דאיברו ביה עשבים, because the grass was created, so the grass is a lot, you know, a lot of stuff gives, but it's, it multiplies. So he'll do things which has to do with multiplication. האי מאן דבד' בשבא, someone who was born on So someone that's born on Tuesday and he's not It means you could, it means you could always overcome it. But this is the way, you have a נטיה to it. האי מאן דבד' בשבא, someone born on Wednesday, יהא גבר חכים ונהיר, he'll be smart and shiny, his face will shine. מאי טעמא? משום דאיתלו ביה מאורות. On Wednesday the מאורות, the sun and the moon were hung up by the Eibershter, so it shines. האי מאן דבחמישא בשבא, someone who is born on Thursday, יהא גבר גומל חסדים, will be a person that does גמילות חסדים. מאי טעמא? What is the reason? משום דאיברו ביה דגים ועופות, fish and birds were created then, and the fish and birds get their food, it says חסדו של הקדוש ברוך הוא, they don't have to work hard, so it's a day of chesed. האי מאן דבמעלי שבתא, someone born on Friday, יהא גבר חזרן, will be a person that will look after. Look after what? אמר רב נחמן: חזרן במצות. Since Friday is a day everyone looks for mitzvot, you go prepare for Shabbos, you buy challah, you buy this, you do this. So a guy who is born on Friday will look for mitzvot. האי מאן דשבתא, born on שבת, יהא, יהא בשבתא, יהי בשבתא ימות. This guy is going to die on Shabbos. A guy who's born on Sunday? On Shabbos? Born on Shabbos, why? על דאחילו עלוהי יומא רבא דשבתא, because he caused חילול שבת. So he needs a תקנה. As long as it's good, but he needs a תקנה. So the תקנה will be that he will die on Shabbos. אמר רבא, אמר רבא בר רב שילא: וקדישא רבא יתקרי. A guy born on Shabbos will be called big kiddush. And the word קדוש means separate. קדוש is קדוש ומובדל. Particularly this guy is going to be a special guy just like Shabbos is separated from the days of the week, Shabbos is separated. I mean this guy will be separated from the bad people. He'll die on Shabbos? Yeah, but it doesn't say when he's born. To do טהרה on Shabbos, this also desecrates Shabbos. Who does טהרה on Shabbos? You don't. Because someone who dies, passes on Friday night, what do you do? You wait till after. You wait till after, sure. Yeah. Isn't that considered preparing for the chol? What? That they can't do טהרה? Yeah. Why can't they do it on Shabbos? It's מוקצה לכל המצוות. It's כבוד המת for you don't? Yeah, no, we're saying. Yeah, but that's for a different reason, because the met isn't there, you see. On Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh, the person, the neshamah leaves, you know. This is all written in the pinkas, in the book of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi. אמר ליה רבי חנינא, and Rabbi Chanina said to the talmidim when they saw this: פוקו אמרו ליה לבר ליואי, go out and tell בן לוי, tell יהושע בן לוי, לא מזל יום גורם, it's not the mazal of the day the week you're born that causes anything, אלא מזל שעה גורם. It depends which hour and any day, which hour of the day, because there are different hours of the day different mazalot. Depends on which hour of the day you were born. And it goes through so a list. We'll get to whatever amount we get through, we'll get through. Huh? A lot more complicated than that. Yeah, but we're not going to go through the חשבון, he says there is. האי מאן דבחמה, one who is born at a time when the חמה, because we have the different מזלות, one of them is חמה, one of them is לבנה, and then you have different ones, שבתאי, you know, they're all different. So he says if you're born under the star of the חמה, when the sun is, יהא גבר זיוותן, לשון זיו. It will be shine like, countenance. Ziv. Ziv? Ziv. זיוותן. Yeah? And יהא אכל מדיליה ושתי מדיליה. He's going to have enough food to eat from his own and drink from his own, ורזיה גליין, and his secrets, his secrets will be revealed, just like by the sun. The sun has no secrets, the sun shines, gives out. He's a person that will not hide anything. ואי גניב אי גניב לא מצלח. If he's going to try to steal, he won't be matsliach. Why? Because he's a guy that his secrets are all revealed. So like, he can't try to be a ganav. It's not going to have mazal. Everyone's going to see it. האי מאן דבכוכב, דבכוכב נוגה, one that's under נוגה, יהא גבר עתיר, will be rich. וזנאי יהא, be זנאי. מאי טעמא? משום דאית ליה בי נורא. For some reason, the source of fire is by נוגה, כוכב נוגה. Which maybe that's what the Rambam is talking about גלגלים, I don't know, but so mimela, since it's fire, and זנות has to do with תאוות, the heat of the body. What time is Noga? Oh, a time? No, it's the time of the day. Every, that'll be the שעות of the day. How do you figure that out? Yeah, it's חנכ\"ל שצ\"ם. ח' נ' כ' ל' ש' צ' No, it's ס' סמ\"ך. No, it's like a Schlossman, you know, it's like a שצ\"ם Schlossman, yeah. And you have to make you have to cheshbon it. Rashi doesn't even make the cheshbon which hours it is. So, if a guy is born on on Tuesday and he is born under the Yeah, but this shita doesn't hold of what it said before, the days don't count the days don't count, yeah. You think for someone someone someone sits over you because it's a כוכב? I don't know what it means. Could be it's on top of their head. Mazalot go, could be it's during the day. Here's a Here's a chart. Oh, here's a chart, exactly what Okay, yeah. Anybody wants to know, they should look there. האי מאן דבכוכב, someone who is born under the star כוכב, יהא גבר נהיר וחכים, will be shiny person and smart, משום דספרא דחמה הוא. It's the lashon, because this this star ke'ilu writes the about the sun. It's a reflection of the sun, or it it's it it has to do with getting something from the sun. And the sun, we said, is smart, makes you light and smart, this also. Okay, we'll stop in the middle first. Whoever want to know the What time you were born at? I don't remember.
