Part of Ein Yaakov · 20:18

Locating the daf: tzniyus protects from snakes, scorpions, and bad dreams

Close my heart. I just told them. Okay. Just to ask for one can though. He knows about you. Wants to know about brains also. Okay. Where is it? It's the middle of סימן it doesn't even show what the סימן is. Page ק\"א, I think it's the same page as no, maybe it's not here. It's the middle of סימן קל\"ד. Check James Bond. Page ק\"א, page ק\"א. In the middle. No, it's ק\"א. No, oh this is a mistake, this is ק', this is ק\"א. Okay, yeah.

Rav Tanchum bar Chanilai: three things a tzanua is saved from in the bathroom

Over here, אמר רב תנחום בר חנילאי, Rav Tanchum bar Chanilai said, כל הצנוע בבית הכסא, anybody who is tzniusdik in the bathroom, ניצול משלשה דברים, is saved from three things: מן הנחשים, ומן העקרבים, ומן המזיקין. Snakes, scorpions, and from the שדים. ויש אומרים, some say, אף חלומותיו מיושבין עליו. His dreams are okay, like this you have mixed up dreams, you have nightmares. It's one of the berachos we learned before, if you say ולא יבהלוני חלומות רעים, you shouldn't get mixed up with all these bad dreams. But if you're tzanua in the בית הכסא, it's a segulah that your dreams are okay. So there are three four things: saved from snakes, scorpions, and מזיקין, שדים, and also your dreams are. So the שדים want to go into a מקום טמא like that, they like to go there? It's interesting that they like to go into two places. In a מקום טמא, that's where they are. And they also, bichlal it says that the חיצונים and the קליפות they try to grab onto קדושה. Wherever there's קדושה, that's where they feel they can get more יניקה. In this, in the מקום No, bichlal, not in this, bichlal. That's why it says a Yid has to wash negel vasser, a goy doesn't. Because a Yid has רוח הטומאה. Why? Because a Yid the טומאה קלעפּט זיך צו, it's connected. To a goy, what do they care about a goy? Here they gain, it says they draw more nourishment. They can only get a יניקה because in בית הכסא there is very little קדושה. And, but in בית הכסא they do, cause that's their see that's nothing. Their place and they in, a yid goes there, and if he doesn't behave properly they they get to him. The translation shows scorpions and snakes, cause it mentions three, it says? No, unferfer. What does it mean about not behaving properly in the בית? Like you don't use the kosher Pesach soap, you know? Put your shirt over your pants. Oh, the way the way you behave there, the way you you're dressed, the way there's tzniut. Undress. The way you're undressed, yeah, the way you're and while you're there. Yeah, if you start to talk. The Gemara talks about it later, and you cover you cover whatever you have to cover, you don't. Yeah, take off your tzitzit or whatever it is. How do you deal with children in this situation? Do you have a heter for that? Children in the בית הכסא. Yeah. You have, you know, to wash them, to clean them. So whatever you have to do, that's not a question. Like when you're in a mikveh, you have to go you do so. So the Gemara right there, ההוא בית הכסא conversation in the mikveh? Have a whole conversation in the mikveh? Yeah.

The haunted bathhouse in Teveria and the kabbalah of tzniyus and silence

ההוא בית הכסא, there was this bathroom, דהוה בטבריא, it was in Tiberias. דכי הוו עיילי בי תרי, אפילו ביממא, even during the day two people went in, even two together, הוו מנזקי, they would get damaged, they get hurt. Cause like this, you know, the shedim only do it at night, hurt you at night. And also only by one person, if two together, not. And this was so such a terrible place that when two people went in during the day, they got hurt. A bathhouse? In this In this בית הכסא, not a bathhouse. Well, they were not Now, רב אמי ורב אסי הוו עיילי חד חד לחודיה, רב אמי and רב אסי used to go in alone, ולא הוו מנזקי, nothing happened to them. אמרו להו רבנן, the chachamim said to them, לא מסתפיתו, you're not afraid? אמרו להו, they said to them like this: אנן קבלה גמירינן, we have a kabbalah. Kabbalah means we have a tradition handed down to us. קבלה דבית הכסא, we have a kabbalah how to be safe in the בית הכסא, it's צניעותא ושתיקותא. If you behave with tzniut, and you don't talk, and you're quiet, that's this segulah that nothing will hurt, nothing will happen to you. If they talk to you, you don't answer. Who talked in the בית הכסא? That's right, honey. You have someone on the outside says something, you shouldn't answer. Even on the inside you shouldn't talk. A vadai. Inside, who talks? He says. But on the outside, you might think you could answer, so also not. קבלה דיסורי, I have a kabbalah concerning suffering. A person suffers, what's the etzah? שתיקותא ומבעי רחמי. Be quiet, in other words, don't complain, but daven to the Oybershter. And that's the segulah that it'll get you get rid of it. All right. Says the גמרא,

Abaye's sheep and Rava's wife's alarm system against shedim

אביי מרבית ליה אימיה אמרא Don't complain when? I mean, about anything or about No, don't talk about it, no. You could be quiet. About what? About the yissurim. Oh. אביי מרבית ליה אימיה, his mother raised special for him אמרא, a sheep, דהוה עייל לבית הכסא, in order to go in with him to בית הכסא, so he shouldn't go in alone. So he would go in with the sheep. The Gemara says, ולירבי ליה גדיא? Why davka a sheep? Why not a goat? So the Gemara says, שעיר בשעיר מיחלף. A goat is a שעיר, the שדים שדים are also called שעירים, goats. So, the שדים will not, might by mistake think that this goat is really one of theirs. So, like this, it's protection for the man, but if they think it's theirs, it won't protect you. That's why he made him going with a sheep, not a goat. רבא מקמי דהוי רישא, רבא, before he was the head, before he became the head of the ישיבה, מקשקשא ליה בת רב חסדא אגוזא בקנקנא, so the daughter of Rav Chisda, which was his wife, so when he went to the בית הכסא, she would stand outside and she would put in like a nut into a metal, a copper כלי and shake it. That would make noise, and I guess that was some kind of protection from the שדים. בתר דמליך, because they don't like it if there's other people are going to come. It's an alarm. Yes, like an alarm, exactly. They don't want to be where there's other other people, right, right. What do we do? We we knock shaker or something, we make noise, don't we do this sometimes during the year? We we do something like this for Baal Shem Tov said, ערב יום כיפור when you go in, the noise of the coins chases away the yetzer hara. What Which ערב יום כיפור we do? Yeah, before Mincha you give tzedakah. בתר דמליך, after he became ראש ישיבה, he became So now, the danger is even greater because the the the שדים like to go to to chashuv people, that's why a talmid chacham shouldn't go alone at night, a stam a person could, because they start up with him. Now, what she did till now was not good enough. עבדא ליה, this is what she did, עבדא ליה כוותא, they made a a window in the בית הכסא, ומנחא ליה ידה ארישא, when he was inside, she would stick her hand in and keep it on his head. And that Keep what on his head? Right, her hand. Yeah? And that was another way of protection. The whole idea is to have someone else, like this the noise was supposed to chase away or make them get scared. Because they're not supposed to they're not supposed to reveal themselves to other people. That's Yeah, right, when no, how when more than one person, they're that's not they're they're scared, they don't come. So, this was already enough, but now they they try even harder, so now she had to put her put her hand in and put her hand on her head on his head. So, look at it even further. His his tzniut wasn't enough? In fact he did need Yeah, I guess such a chashuv person needs even more protection. Yeah, the more chashuv you are, the more protection So how did the others Who was the two that didn't need protection? I guess he was chashuv. So we don't need that much, we're not so chashuv. Right, they they don't care about us. We're not, that's for sure. We're not, that's for sure. We're not, that's for sure. From the yishuv? Send them away from the yishuv to the forest, netanya. And then in the forest, so sometimes they can come in, but the Baal Shem Tov send them away. That's why our house is in the forest. אורחא רחיקא.

Can you call a niftar tzanua? Why Chabad doesn't make hespedim

ההוא ספדנא דנחית קמיה דרב נחמן. There was this מספיד, somebody who what's it called? A eulogizer? A eulogist. A eulogist? A eulogizer, it is? Who knows? You don't have professional ones anymore? No, but they used to. This guy, that was a job. So, he was in front of Make everybody cry, right? Right, they have people who howl with different instruments, women, and they cried and this was they were paid, hired people. Anyway, so this guy, he was Rav Nachman was there by this funeral, אמר, he said, when he was מספיד, when he eulogized this guy, he said, האי צנוע באורחותיו הוה, this man, this deceased man, was a tzanuadik person in his ways. אמר ליה רב נחמן, so Rav Nachman said, את עיילת בהדיה לבית הכסא, like you went with him to the בית הכסא, וידעת אי צנוע אי לא, that you know whether he's צנוע or not? דתניא, because it says in a ברייתא, אין קורין צנוע אלא למי שצנוע בבית הכסא. You can't call a person צנוע unless he's צנוע בבית הכסא, so how do you know? All these people who are making the the you know hespadim nowadays, they're calling him, he was צנוע, צנוע, and everybody doing the wrong They didn't learn the Gemara. They didn't learn the Gemara, but what can you do? בית הכסא, they're all made for one. You said we're in the public בית הכסא. And the Gemara, but רב נחמן, מאי נפקא ליה מיניה, what did Rav Nachman care? Why did he have to criticize him? What do you do you know? So, he said, let's say, takeh, he didn't know and he said it, what's the big This is one of the מקורות why we don't, Chabad doesn't do hespadim. So he said, the Gemara asks, what does he care? Let him say what he says. And the Gemara says, no, משום דתניא, it says, כשם שנפרעין מן המתים, just like you punish the people who died, you punish for their behavior, כך נפרעין מן הספדנים, the Aibershter punishes those eulogizers who say things which are wrong, ומן העונין אחריהם, and those that are standing there and listening and not protesting and they're saying something that's not true, That's why I took him down, what you write on the Don't tell your buyer if he wasn't a tzadik, he's really No, don't say anything, that's our minhag! If he said it, what am I supposed to do about it? So he's supposed to be mochiach. You're supposed to say to him, you know You have to be careful what you write on a So that's matzeivah, you have to be careful, matzeivah, but even a hesped. When you do a hesped, you could say things which are wrong, it says it's no good. Ha? That that is not what it says here. But it but it could be, they call, it says here, נפרעין מן המתים, why? Because you're saying things which are not true, and then he'll be punished for it, because better. If you say on somebody that he learned 10 hours a day and he didn't, so when he comes למעלה, they say, \"They tell about you 10 hours a day. Why didn't you?\" And they'll punish him for not learning. So if no one says it, no one says it. So he gets punished, the one that said it to lie gets punished, and the people that listen get punished. So the easiest thing is don't say. I the Gemara There's a whole sugya in Gemara about hespadim. Yeah, you're standing there, so you're I should walk out. You're a walk out and make him a liar and accomplice to the to the lie. But the talk so much about hespadim, but there is a din that if the מת, מת deceased says, \"Oy oy, I don't want you should be מספיד me,\" שומעין לו. So therefore, if the minhag is not to make a hesped, that means he doesn't want, so there is no שאלות, you don't have to do it. And even there you shouldn't say things which are not, but it's not the same. It's in front of the מת is the problem. The מת is laying there, and you're saying and then למעלה they're going to ask him, \"What happened? They expected you to do these.\" And if they expect, that means you were שייך. They wouldn't say on that he knows כל הש״ס. They said about you, it means you were שייך to it. So why didn't you do it? And then they're going to punish him for it. I'm giving an example כל הש״ס 10 hours. I've heard I've been every levayah I've been to I've heard people make say things and then I wonder what they're saying. No, that's when you have that's when you have certain people. Chabad houses, these things with people that always do that. The rabbis? The rabbis, yeah. But that not the real regular Lubavitcher yes. Did they say all that was the truth? No, the Rebbe said we don't make הספד. No, they shouldn't. But, there you have no choice. For the people who listen the family it's this you got to do this. You got to inspire their life. Inspire them. But, not So, you got to take a chance, but baShas it says, he didn't mention this why you should do it. And there were even other gedolim not chasidim that wrote in their צוואה, you shouldn't be מספיד. Because of this. Because of this. Because people are מגזים. מגזים means, מגזים is the worst thing. You don't want to be מגזים. And if you don't want to say too little also, because it's also a בזיון. To say a person there's small things when he was really a big guy, so you're so So, then you don't say. What do you have to say? Yeah, you mentioned it before. מצבה we only write So, you shouldn't be מגזים. You shouldn't say anything. By the way, you do want to write the right things. So, it's a very touchy situation there. In green ring glasses white passed away, they they had a הספד Sometimes a מת, I remember when they killed Halberstam, there was a big הספד. It was a political thing with they I mean certain reasons you have to do it you have to do it, but the seder normally is that Chabad doesn't. Things the only ones. Cuz every other chasidim do what everyone does. That's theory because in No, I call it Chabad, though. I don't call it Chabad. When you do for a we do other things for them, also. People announce the numbers of the of the pages and the that's not that's not Chabad. Chabad, you don't do that. Because you're become kind of a baby, you got to do certain things. So, Lubavitch is the only the only one that's I think so, either maybe there are other communities. As a group, they don't, but are individuals. You know, even some of the biggest tzadikim, Chabad, they made no הספד? No, the Rebbeim, they didn't make הספד. The Rebbeim? Why does and The alter Rebbe didn't make הספד. The Frierdiker Rebbe didn't make הספד. No, the old Rebbeim, no one. So, what do they do then? If they Just Nothing, it's the levayah. You just take the body out and you go to the בית הקברות and you do whatever you say, צדוק הדין, Like, say everything that needed No, no, say צדוק הדין and what they do And then they make Kaddish, but they don't No הספדים. They don't say anything. They made a הספד in the in the in the 770 here after, you know, Some guy that uh, Soloveitchik came What's his name from Chicago, he came, and like asking for the right. Shloshim, that's that's when it's fixed for the hesped, it's in front of the meis. In front of the meis. Later on, it also says you but still it's not the same. That that's no, that you could say. But it's in front of the meis and when the meis goes up with these hespedim, they they stop and they ask him. Better be right. Can be true. To the Rebbe, to the Rebbe, he's a tzaddik. So, for him, we could say. No, but we didn't. There's no, no hespedim. The Rebbeim no one wanted they didn't want. It's a It's an official minhag that you don't we do not know hespedim. We don't do a hesped. Can I find having in their will I don't know it's in the will, so it's a minhag Chabad. You don't have to write it in the will, but I don't know where it started. By the Alter Rebbe, by the Even Rabbi Tukachinsky also from Gesher HaChaim also didn't have a He He He asked for it and there's a din that if the meis asks for it, שומעין לו. You have to listen to him. So, I think he asked not to have it. Right, I'm saying they ask not to have. From the din you have to be מספיד. That's part of it. It says if a if you if you have a חכם שלא נספד כהלכה, all kinds of צרות come from it. It says in the Gemara, a חכם that died and you're not מספיד him properly, then it says it's all kinds of קללות. But that's only if you didn't have, but if he asks for it, Properly means not too much too. So, why didn't Moshe Rabbeinu ask they shouldn't be מספיד him? Who says they had a hesped? I don't know. They cried. It doesn't say they had a hesped. ויספדו it says. You think this is speeches? I don't think this is speeches. Now you have to say ask him on a tzaddik, everybody knows who he was. No, if it's no, if it's a If it's a minhag in the community community, it's automatically that's what you want. No, but everyone knows that Lubavitch they're not מספיד. Any Lubavitcher that passes away, it's as if he asked, \"Don't be מספיד.\" It's an automatic thing, because that's the minhag. Yeah, and that's what he wants. So, it's for sure that's, that's not a she'eilah. That's 100% as if he asked. It's even more than he asked. That's it. Tukachinsky was a Lubavitcher, wasn't he? No. No? So why does he say on himself that he is a Lubavitcher? Tukachinsky said on himself? The one who wrote the Gesher HaChaim. I know. He just writes by us in Lubavitch. Yeah? Could be he was from his mishpachah, could be stam somewhere Chabad. I don't think he was Lubavitch. No. He wasn't. I mean, he was he was from the ירושלימער גדולים, he was a was a big, a big person. But You got to read straight, he says Lubavitch. He, and says on himself? Yeah. In the Gesher Hachaim he writes it? Yeah. Never saw. I mean, I saw the Gesher Hachaim, I look at it a lot of times. I never saw such a thing. Okay, interesting. It's good to know. I'll give you a look for a number to look up myself. I'll have to know where it says it. So the Gemara continues,

Defining a tzanua: using the same spot by day and by night

תנו רבנן, רבנן learn, איזהו צנוע? What's called a tzanua? זה הנפנה בלילה במקום שנפנה ביום. If he goes at night, see we're talking now, we don't even understand these things because we have the toilets in in in the house, but those days Outhouse. Outhouse, it was far, outside to prove that the wife is having a child after a thousand years. Yeah. So, it's if you, if you do it, if you go to the bathroom at night, the same place you go during the day. Now during the day a person goes very far, because there are people around, so you have to go all the way. But at night it's dark, so you don't have to go so far. But if a person is a tzanua, he even goes that far. The גמרא, איני? Is it not true? You don't have to go that far. אמר רב יהודה אמר רב, רב יהודה said in the name of רב, לעולם ינהיג אדם את עצמו שחרית וערבית, you should try to go to the bathroom in the morning and evening, כדי שלא יצטרך להתרחק, you shouldn't have to go at night, and then you'll go far. So what, so what do we see from here? That normally You don't go so far. You don't go so far. So the גמרא, בסורא, רבא ביממא הוה אזיל מיל. And he is against, רבא did not do the same place, during the day he went a מיל, ובלילה, at night he didn't go so far. At night he said, the shamash, to his שמש, פנו לי דוכתא ברחבה דמתא. Middle of the street he said, \"Make me a place, block out, I'll do it because at night you can't go far, and no one can see anyway.\" So we see you don't have to do the same place as at night. How did he say you do the same place as a day? He said, somewhere secluded, they put up a curtain. Yeah, a curtain, something, yeah. וכן אמר ליה רב זירא לשמעיה, רב זירא said to his שמש, חזי מאן דאיכא אחורי בית חבראי. \"Go look who's there behind this house of the friend, דבעינא למיפנא, cause I want to go to the bathroom, make sure.\" So we see at night you don't have to do the same thing. So the Gemara said, לא תימא במקום, אלא אימא כדרך שנפנה ביום. That we didn't mean the same place, the same way, just like during the day you make sure to cover yourself and everything because during the day, so at night, even though it's dark, you should also That's called tzanua, cover yourself. רב אשי אמר, רב אשי says, אפילו תימא במקום, it could be even the same place. Ay we said night is not the same place? והא איכא למיקם בקרן זוית. Like if you have a corner, you always look for a corner when you can't see from both sides, so at night you should do the same thing. So the גמרא, גופא, now let's explain what we said before. אמר רב יהודה אמר רב, רב יהודה in the name of רב, לעולם ינהיג אדם את עצמו שחרית וערבית, you should try to go in the morning and evening, כדי שלא יצטרך להתרחק, he shouldn't have to go far. תניא נמי הכי, it says stuck in the same thing in the ברייתא, בן עזאי, בן עזאי says, השכם וצא, הערב וצא, in the morning and at night go, כדי שלא תתרחק. And it says you shouldn't go far. משמש ושב. But I don't know what exactly it means, that they they take something and they make them open themselves up so that it should come out easier. So do that before you sit down, ואל תשב ותמשמש, and don't do it after you sit down, because כל היושב וממשמש, if you do that after you sit down, אפילו עושין כשפים באספמיא, even if they do magic, black magic, someplace other end of the world, באין עליו, it could come on him. This is something, this is a keli for the magicians.

The anti-kishuf incantation and the Hungarian parliament's attack on Shulchan Aruch

ואי אנשי, let's say he forgot, וישב, and he sat down, ואחר כך משמש, and he did it, מאי תקנתיה? What should he do? כי קאים, so when he gets up, לימא, this is what he should say, לא לי, לא לי, don't come to me, don't come to me, לא תוכי ולא תחתים, I don't want to have anything to do with תוכי or תחתים. These are the two names of the the שדים that have to do with this inyanim. לא הני ולא הני, I don't want them, I don't want anything to do with them, לא חרשי דחרשא ולא חרשי דחרשתא, I don't want כישוף from a male כישוף maker, I don't want כישוף from a female כישוף maker. And if you say this לחש, this will help you. See, I just want to tell, always when we learn this, I always repeat this. When I was a kid, I remember I heard, I had a melamed who was, call whatever, hashgacha, he was, I learned an oneg Shabbos, so he said, once told us a kid, I remember, that in Ungarn there was once in the parliament someone came up with a gezeira that they should stop Yidden from from learning Shulchan Aruch, and he brought a re'aya, he brought the Shulchan Aruch to the to to the parliament, and showed them, look, הלכות קינוח, הלכות of how you wipe yourself. He says, \"This is what they learn, wipe yourself like this, wipe yourself like this, this is this this is the Torah? It's a joke, it's just a...\" And it was accepted, being starting to be accepted such an idea. So one guy, one of the goyim got up. He said, \"You don't understand, look at the holiness of this nation, that even in such things They also have rules, regulations, laws exactly how to do it properly. So he, and that cut it off. Like we're learning about this, people think, come on, we're learning about, what, the to'elet of this? Holy Shulchan Aruch. Also even in Kitzur Shulchan Aruch it says these inyanim. Ah, in Kitzur Shulchan Aruch it says this? Yeah. You know, they had like they had one hour apiece, and the woman...
