Jewish audio on Chabad.org. Today's 砖讬注讜专 will be in 诪住讻转 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 讚祝 诪 注诪讜讚 讗, eight 砖讜专讜转, eight lines from the top of the 注诪讜讚 by the two dots. And we're still here in the middle of the 住讜讙讬讗 of the 诪爪讜转 that a father is supposed to do to his son. And one of the 诪爪讜转 we said was that a father is obligated to teach his son 转讜专讛. So the 讙诪专讗 asks, 注讚 讛讬讻讗 讞讬讬讘 讗讚诐 诇诇诪讚 讗转 讘谞讜 转讜专讛? How far, how much is a father supposed to teach his son There was a person in the time of the 讙诪专讗 who was called 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉. So they gave an example of 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 砖诇讬诪讚讜 讗讘讬 讗讘讬讜 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛, 讜转诇诪讜讚, 讛诇讻讜转, 讜讗讙讚讜转, that his grandfather taught him 诪拽专讗, which is 讞讜诪砖, 诪砖谞讛, 诪砖谞讬讜转, 转诇诪讜讚, which is the explanation of the 诪砖谞讬讜转, the 讙诪专讗, and he taught him 讛诇讻讜转, and 讗讙讚讜转, which is the 诪讜住专 and the 讗讙讚转讗 of the 注谞讬谞讬诐 of learning. So from here we see that the obligation to teach 转讜专讛 includes 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛, 转诇诪讜讚, 讛诇讻讜转, 讜讗讙讚讜转. But the 讙诪专讗 asks, 诪讬转讬讘讬, I will ask you a 拽砖讬讗. We

learned in a 讘专讬讬转讗, 诇讬诪讚讜 诪拽专讗, when the father teaches his son 诪拽专讗, 讗讬谉 诪诇诪讚讜 诪砖谞讛, you don't have to teach him anymore 诪砖谞讛. In other words, all you have to teach is 诪拽专讗 and not 诪砖谞讛. So how could you say that we learned from 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 that there is an obligation that the father to teach his son 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛, 转诇诪讜讚, 讛诇讻讜转, 讜讗讙讚讜转 when we know that all he is supposed to teach him is only 诪拽专讗? 讜讗诪专 专讘讗, and 专讘讗 said, 诪拽专讗 讝讜 转讜专讛, that 诪拽专讗 means 转讜专讛, so all you have to teach him are the five 讞讜诪砖讬诐 of 转讜专讛. And before we said that he has to teach him 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛, 转诇诪讜讚, 讛诇讻讜转, 讜讗讙讚讜转. The 讙诪专讗 says that when we brought the 专讗讬讛 from 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉, what we meant was 讻讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 讜诇讗 讻讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉, a little bit like 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉, but not in everything is it like 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉. 讻讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 砖诇讬诪讚讜 讗讘讬 讗讘讬讜, we have to learn from 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 that a grandfather should teach his grandson 转讜专讛. 讜讗讬诇讜 讛讻讗, but here, but in the case of the 讞讬讜讘 that the father has concerning his son, it's 诪拽专讗 讘诇讘讚. He only has to teach him 诪拽专讗, only 讞讜诪砖, but he doesn't have to teach him the rest. Now according to this, it comes out that when the 讙诪专讗 asked the question in the beginning, 注讚 讛讬讻讗 讞讬讬讘 讗讚诐 诇诇诪讚 讗转 讘谞讜 转讜专讛, how far is this father supposed to teach his son 转讜专讛, so before we thought the question was what 注谞讬谞讬诐 in 转讜专讛 is he supposed to teach him. But now we're saying that that wasn't the question. The question was also how far, how many generations does it go. In other words, is it just a father to a son, or is it a grandfather to a grandson too, etc.? And that was the answer, that we could compare it to 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 in a certain part of the question, not in the rest. In other words, concerning how far it's supposed to go in generations, we bring a 专讗讬讛 from 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 that a grandfather should teach his grandson 转讜专讛. But concerning the question what he's supposed to teach him, that we do not learn out from 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉, because 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉, the case there, his grandfather taught him 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛, 转诇诪讜讚, 讛诇讻讜转, 讜讗讙讚讜转, but the obligation of the father is only to teach 诪拽专讗. Then the 讙诪专讗 asks, 讜讗讘讬 讗讘讬讜 诪讬 诪讬讞讬讬讘? Is a grandfather 讞讬讬讘 to teach his grandson 转讜专讛? We just said that it is like 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉, that a grandfather is obligated to teach his grandson 转讜专讛, but is that true? 讜讛转谞讬讗, didn't we learn in a 讘专讬讬转讗, it says in the 驻住讜拽, 讜诇诪讚转诐 讗讜转诐 讗转 讘谞讬讻诐, you should teach them the words of 转讜专讛 to your sons, and we 讚专砖谉, 讜诇讗 讘谞讬 讘谞讬讻诐, and not to your son's sons, that there is no obligation to teach a grandson 转讜专讛. 讜诪讛 讗谞讬 诪拽讬讬诐, ay, how will we explain the 驻住讜拽 that says, 讜讛讜讚注转诐 诇讘谞讬讱 讜诇讘谞讬 讘谞讬讱, that you should notify them, you should notify the words of 转讜专讛, the idea of 诪转谉 转讜专讛 to your son and to your grandson? So it seems like the 转讜专讛 tells us that you should teach 转讜专讛 to your grandson. So that means something else, the 讙诪专讗 says, 诇讜诪专 诇讱, to tell you, 砖讻诇 讛诪诇诪讚 讗转 讘谞讜 转讜专讛, that anybody who teaches his son 转讜专讛, 诪注诇讛 注诇讬讜 讛讻转讜讘, the 转讜专讛 compares it 讻讗讬诇讜 诇讜诪讚讜 诇讜 讜诇讘谞讜 讜诇讘谉 讘谞讜 注讚 住讜祝 讻诇 讛讚讜专讜转, that is if he taught it to his son and to his grandson till the end of all generations. And the 驻砖讟 is very simple: since every father is going to teach his son, so the first one that starts teaching his son, and later on that son itself who will have the obligation to teach his son, and that son will teach his son, so since the first one started it, This will automatically bring it that all generations later, they're all going to learn 转讜专讛. And that's what the 驻住讜拽 means, that when you teach your son 转讜专讛, it's as if you taught all the generations 转讜专讛, because you are the cause of teaching all generations 转讜专讛. But in the meantime, we see from here that there is no obligation on a grandfather to teach his grandson 转讜专讛. So how did we say before that we learn out from 讝讘讜诇讜谉 讘谉 讚谉 that a grandfather should teach his grandson 转讜专讛? The 讙诪专讗 answers, 讛讜讗 讚讗诪专 讻讬 讛讗讬 转谞讗, that he says like that 转谞讗. In other words, there is a 转谞讗 that does hold that you do have to teach your grandson 转讜专讛. And the 讙诪专讗 before that said that you should teach your grandson 转讜专讛, that goes according to this 转谞讗. 转谞讬讗, because we learn in a 讘专讬讬转讗, the 驻住讜拽 says 讜诇诪讚转诐 讗讜转诐 讗转 讘谞讬讻诐, you should teach them the words of 转讜专讛 to your sons. 讗讬谉 诇讬 讗诇讗 讘谞讬讻诐, we only know from this 驻住讜拽 that you have to teach your sons. 讘谞讬 讘谞讬讻诐 诪谞讬讬谉, how do we know that you also have to teach your grandsons? 转诇诪讜讚 诇讜诪专, so he brings the other 驻住讜拽 that says 讜讛讜讚注转诐 诇讘谞讬讱 讜诇讘谞讬 讘谞讬讱, that you have to notify them the 转讜专讛 to your sons and to your grandsons. So we see clearly that you do have to teach 转讜专讛 to your grandsons. 讗诐 讻谉 诪讛 转诇诪讜讚 诇讜诪专 讘谞讬讻诐, so then why does the 转讜专讛 say in the other 驻住讜拽 讜诇诪讚转诐 讗讜转诐 讗转 讘谞讬讻诐, that you should teach them to your sons? And it's as if it's telling us only to your sons and not to your grandsons. So he says, no, we 讚专砖谉 the 驻住讜拽 differently: 讘谞讬讻诐 讜诇讗 讘谞讜转讬讻诐, your sons and not your daughters. So this is a 诪讞诇讜拽转 whether you have to teach your grandson 转讜专讛 or not. One learns out from the 驻住讜拽 讜讛讜讚注转诐 诇讘谞讬讱 讜诇讘谞讬 讘谞讬讱 that you do have to teach your grandsons 转讜专讛, and the 驻住讜拽 讜诇诪讚转诐 讗讜转诐 讗转 讘谞讬讻诐 is learned to learn out that you do not have to teach your daughters. And the other one learns that the 驻住讜拽 讜诇诪讚转诐 讗讜转诐 讗转 讘谞讬讻诐 tells us that you only have to teach your sons and not your grandsons, and the 驻住讜拽 讜讛讜讚注转诐 诇讘谞讬讱 讜诇讘谞讬 讘谞讬讱 is to tell us that if you teach your son 转讜专讛, it's as if you taught all the generations 转讜专讛. 砖谞讗诪专, because the 转讜专讛 says 讜讛讜讚注转诐 诇讘谞讬讱 讜诇讘谞讬 讘谞讬讱, that you should notify them you should teach them to your children to your grandchildren, 讜住诪讬讱 诇讬讛, and right next to it it says 讬讜诐 讗砖专 注诪讚转 诇驻谞讬 讛' 讗诇拽讬讱 讘讞讜专讘, the day that you stood in front of 讛' your God by 讞讜专讘, which is by 讛专 住讬谞讬. So we see here that by notifying, by teaching your sons 转讜专讛, it's as if you stood in front of 讛专 住讬谞讬 and received the 转讜专讛 yourself from 讛'. And the 讙诪专讗 continues: 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 讘专 讗讘讗 讗砖讻讞讬讛 诇专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 讘谉 诇讜讬, 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 讘专 讗讘讗 found 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 讘谉 诇讜讬 讚砖讚讬 讚讬住谞讗 讗专讬砖讬讛, he was wearing a kind of cloth on his head, that when he was going in the street, he wasn't wearing the regular hat he was supposed to wear, he wore a kind of cloth just to cover his head, but it wasn't the regular hat that they people normally wore. So he saw him saw him walking that way, 讜拽讗 诪诪讟讬 诇讬讛 诇讬谞讜拽讗 诇讘讬 讻谞讬砖转讗, and he was taking a child to the 讘讬转 讛讻谞住转 to the 讬砖讬讘讛 to learn. 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, 诪讗讬 讻讜诇讬 讛讗讬? What is it so much? In other words, what is the rush here that you have to take your child to the 讘讬转 讛诪讚专砖 that that you didn't get a chance to put on your hat properly? 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, 诪讬 讝讜讟专 诪讗讬 讚讻转讬讘 讜讛讜讚注转诐 诇讘谞讬讱? Is it a small thing what the 转讜专讛 says that you should notify it to your children? 讜住诪讬讱 诇讬讛, and right next to it it says 讬讜诐 讗砖专 注诪讚转 诇驻谞讬 讛' 讗诇拽讬讱 讘讞讜专讘, the day that you stood in front of 讛' in 讛专 住讬谞讬. In other words, is it is it such a small thing to take your son to learn 转讜专讛? Since we see here that by making sure that your son learns 转讜专讛, it's as if you receive the 转讜专讛 from 讛专 住讬谞讬, so that's such a great thing that he had no time to waste and put on his hat properly, that he rushed out, just put something over his head in order to fulfill this 诪爪讜讛 of seeing that his son should learn 转讜专讛 because it's as if he received the 转讜专讛 at 讛专 讞讜专讘 at 讛专 住讬谞讬. The custom used to be that in the morning they used to eat a little bit of meat that was burnt over coal, and that was the beginning of the day. So 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 讘专 讗讘讗 from that day would not eat that until he would learn with the child 转讜专讛, but not only learn, review what he learned yesterday, 讜诪讜住讬祝, he would add, he would add another 驻住讜拽 today. And after that, he went to eat, because he heard from 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注 讘谉 诇讜讬 that it's so important to teach your child 转讜专讛, that because of that, the first thing he would do before he did anything else was to review with his son the 转讜专讛 that he learned the day before, plus add another 驻住讜拽. 专讘讛 讘专 专讘 讛讜谞讗 诇讗 讟注讬诐 讗讜诪爪讗, 专讘讛 讘专 专讘 讛讜谞讗 would not taste that meat, 注讚 讚诪讬讬转讬 诇讬谞讜拽讗 诇讘讬 诪讚专砖讗, till he would bring the child to the 讘讬转 讛诪讚专砖 to learn 转讜专讛. And as 专砖"讬 explains, really it should have said 讜砖谞讬转诐, if it would mean to learn, it should have said 讜砖谞讬转诐. What does it mean 讜砖谞谞转诐 with an extra 谉? So it comes to tell us 讜砖诇砖转诐 that you should have it, do it three times. The word 讜砖谞讬转诐, if it would say without an extra 谉, it would be from the 诇砖讜谉 砖谞讬, be twice, two. Now that it doesn't say 讜砖谞讬转诐, it says 讜砖谞谞转诐 with an extra 谉, it comes to add one more, so it comes to tell us that it should be 讜砖诇砖转诐, you should have it in three. Now what does that mean? That means that 诇注讜诇诐 讬砖诇砖 讗讚诐 砖谞讜转讬讜, a person should divide his years into three parts, 砖诇讬砖 讘诪拽专讗, a third should be for 讞讜诪砖, 砖诇讬砖 讘诪砖谞讛, a third should be used for learning 诪砖谞讛, and 砖诇讬砖 讘转诇诪讜讚, a third in 转诇诪讜讚, which is the explanation of the 诪砖谞讬讜转. But then the 讙诪专讗 asks, 诪讬 讬讜讚注 讻诪讛 讞讬讬, how does a person know how long he's going to live? How can you tell a person to divide his lifetime, his years, into three parts, how does a person know how long he's going to live? The 讙诪专讗 answers, 诇讗 爪专讬讻讗, it doesn't even have to tell us because what he meant was 诇讬讜诪讬, the days, and as 专砖"讬 learns it means that the days of the week should be divided into three parts: two days should be for 诪拽专讗, two days should be for 诪砖谞讛, and two days should be for 转诇诪讜讚. But 转讜住驻讜转 says that we still could ask a 拽砖讬讗, but how do you know how long you're going to live? Every week, how do you know that you're going to live through the whole week, that you shall be able to divide the week into three parts? And therefore, 转讜住驻讜转 learns that the 驻砖讟 is that you should divide every day itself into three parts. And then he brings in the 专讘讬谞讜 转诐, that 专讘讬谞讜 转诐 says that we find in the 讙诪专讗 住谞讛讚专讬谉 where it says that 讘讘诇讬 the word 讘讘诇 means mixed, that 转诇诪讜讚 讘讘诇讬 itself is mixed of 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛 and 讙诪专讗. And therefore, when we learn 转诇诪讜讚 讘讘诇讬, we learn 讙诪专讗 讘讘诇讬, by doing that we already fulfill this commandment of learning 诪拽专讗, 诪砖谞讛, and 转诇诪讜讚, because within the 转诇诪讜讚 讘讘诇讬 itself, we have all three. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 诇驻讬讻讱 谞拽专讗讜 专讗砖讜谞讬诐 住讜驻专讬诐, therefore the first ones, the 讞讻诪讬诐, the original 讞讻诪讬诐 were called 住讜驻专讬诐, and 专砖"讬 quotes a 驻住讜拽 where we find that the 讞讻诪讬诐 are called 住讜驻专讬诐. The 驻住讜拽 says, 诪砖驻讞讜转 住讜驻专讬诐 讬讜砖讘讬 讬注讘抓. So the 讙诪专讗 is going to explain why were they called 住讜驻专讬诐, 砖讛讬讜 住讜驻专讬诐 讻诇 讛讗讜转讬讜转 砖讘转讜专讛, because they used to count all the words of the 转讜专讛. 转讜住驻讜转 brings from 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 where it says why were they called 住讜驻专讬诐, from the word 诪住驻专, that they used to put everything into a 诪住驻专, into a number, as we find that they said that there are 讗专讘注讬诐 讞住专 讗讞转 of the 讗讘讜转 诪诇讗讻讜转, there are 40 minus one 诪诇讗讻讜转 you're not allowed to do on 砖讘转. Then we find 讗专讘注讛 讗讘讜转 谞讝讬拽讬谉, that they said there are four categories of damages a person is obligated to pay for. So we see that the 讞讻诪讬诐 put everything into numbers, and that's why they were called 住讜驻专讬诐. But the 讙诪专讗 here says that the reason they were called 住讜驻专讬诐, because they used to count all the 讗讜转讬讜转, all the letters of the 转讜专讛. 砖讛讬讜 讗讜诪专讬诐, they used to say, 讜 讚讙讞讜谉 讞爪讬谉 砖诇 讗讜转讬讜转 砖诇 住驻专 转讜专讛, the the letter 讜 of the word 讙讞讜谉 is the middle, the half, of all the letters of the 住驻专 转讜专讛. This is a 驻住讜拽 in 讜讬拽专讗 where it speaks about the things you are allowed to eat and the things you're not allowed to eat. So there it says 讻诇 讛讜诇讱 注诇 讙讞讜谉, so the word 讙讞讜谉, which really means the stomach, refers to the snakes there, it goes on its stomach, the letter 讜 of the word 讙讞讜谉 is the middle of all the letters of the 住驻专 转讜专讛. Then they said that 讚专砖 讚专砖 讞爪讬谉 砖诇 转讬讘讜转. This is a 驻住讜拽 in 驻专砖转 砖诪讬谞讬, when it says 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 found out that 讗讛专谉 and his children did not eat from a certain 拽专讘谉 that they brought, so it says that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 investigated, 讚专砖 讚专砖, he investigated and he found out that they didn't eat, and the 转讜专讛 says that he was upset at them, and then finally 讗讛专谉 told him the reason that they didn't eat, because that day 谞讚讘 讜讗讘讬讛讜讗, his sons died, and they were 讗讜谞谞讬诐, and therefore they didn't eat. But these two words 讚专砖 讚专砖 are half of the words of the 转讜专讛. Then the word 讜讛转讙诇讞 砖诇 驻住讜拽讬诐, the word 讜讛转讙诇讞 is half of the 驻住讜拽讬诐. This speaks about the 谞讙注讬诐, and there is a kind of 谞讙注 that you find in the head, so one of the things you're supposed to do in middle of the process of finding out whether this 谞讙注 is 讟诪讗 or 讟讛讜专, so it says 讜讛转讙诇讞, you have to cut off the hair around the 谞讙注. Then the 驻住讜拽 continues, 讜讗转 讛谞讙注 诇讗 讬讙诇讞, the 谞讙注 itself you should not cut. But this word 讜讛转讙诇讞 is the middle of the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of the 转讜专讛. Then he says the 驻住讜拽 讬讻专住诪谞讛 讞讝讬专 诪讬注专, 讞讝讬专 of the woods will destroy it, so he says 注讬谉 讚讬注专, the 注讬谉 of the word 讬注专 is 讞爪讬讬谉 砖诇 转讛诇讬诐, is half of the 转讛诇讬诐. And the 驻住讜拽 讜讛讜讗 专讞讜诐 讬讻驻专 注讜谉, he who has 专讞诪谞讜转, which is 讛砖诐, will forgive the 注讘讬专讜转, 讞爪讬 讚驻住讜拽讬诐, that is half of the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of 转讛诇讬诐. Then the 讙诪专讗 asks, 讘注讬 专讘 讬讜住祝, 专讘 讬讜住祝 asks the question, 讜讗讜 讚讙讞讜谉 诪讛讗讬 讙讬住讗 讗讜 诪讛讗讬 讙讬住讗? We said before that the 讜讗讜 of the word 讙讞讜谉 is the middle of the 讗讜转讬讜转 of the 转讜专讛, the 讜讗讜 itself, does it belong to this side or to that side? Is it on the first half, the last letter of the first half of the 转讜专讛, or is it the first letter of the second half of the 转讜专讛? 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, 谞讬转讬 住驻专 转讜专讛 讜讗讬诪谞讬谞讛讜, let's take a 住驻专 转讜专讛 and count it. 诪讬 诇讗 讗诪专 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛, didn't 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛 say, 诇讗 讝讝讜 诪砖诐 注讚 砖讛讘讬讗讜 住驻专 转讜专讛 讜诪谞讗讜诐, that they did not move from there till they brought a 住驻专 转讜专讛 and they counted it. And 专砖状讬 says we don't know where they were, we don't know what this refers to when we say they didn't move from there, from where was it, but nevertheless, we do know that they were a certain place, and 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛 said that they did not move from there till they brought a 住驻专 转讜专讛 and they counted it. If that's what he said to him, so let us too bring a 住驻专 转讜专讛, and we'll count the letters, and then we will know whether the 讜讗讜 of 讙讞讜谉 belongs to the first half or to the second half. 讗诪专 诇讬讛, he said to him, 讗讬谞讛讜 讘拽讬讗讬 讘讞住讬专讜转 讜讬转讬专讜转, they were 讘拽讬 in 讞住讬专讜转 and 讬转讬专讜转. Certain words are written sometimes 诪诇讗 and sometimes 讞住专, because there are certain letters that even if the letters are not written, we pronounce them anyway. So, sometimes a word would have that extra letter, sometimes it wouldn't. So, he said that they knew which words were missing those letters, and which words had those letters, so therefore they were able to count the letters of the 转讜专讛. But 讗谞谉, but we 诇讗 讘拽讬讗讬谞谉, we are not 讘拽讬, we do not know exactly which words are 诪诇讗 and which words are 讞住专, so therefore we cannot count and know exactly whether the 讜讗讜 of 讙讞讜谉 is on the first half or the second half, because we don't know whether we have all the 诪诇讗's right and the 讞住专's right. 讘注讬 专讘 讬讜住祝, and then 专讘 讬讜住祝 asked a question. We said before that the word 讜讛转讙诇讞 is half of the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of the 转讜专讛, so he asked, 讜讛转讙诇讞 诪讛讗讬 讙讬住讗 讗讜 诪讛讗讬 讙讬住讗? Is 讜讛转讙诇讞 on this side or on that side? Is 讜讛转讙诇讞 the end of the first half, or is it the beginning of the second half? 讗诪专 诇讬讛 讗讘讬讬, so 讗讘讬讬 said to him, 驻住讜拽讬 诪讬讛讗 诇讬转讬 诇讬诪谞讜讬讛. Let us at least count the 驻住讜拽讬诐. Before, when we asked about the letters, so you answered that we do not know whether certain letters are 诪诇讗 or 讞住专, so therefore we don't know exactly which letters are written in the 转讜专讛, which are not written. But now we're talking about 驻住讜拽讬诐, the 驻住讜拽讬诐 we definitely could count, and we could know whether this 驻住讜拽 讜讛转讙诇讞 is in the first half or in the second half. So, he answered, 讘驻住讜拽讬 谞诪讬 诇讗 讘拽讬讗讬谞谉, we are also not 讘拽讬 in the exact number of the 驻住讜拽讬诐, because 讚讻讬 讗转讗 专讘 讗讞讗 讘专 讗讚讗, when 专讘 讗讞讗 讘专 讗讚讗 came, 讗诪专, he said, 讘诪注专讘讗, 讘诪注专讘讗 in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, 驻住拽讜 诇讬讛 诇讛讗讬 拽专讗 诇转诇转讗 驻住讜拽讬, they divided this 驻住讜拽, which by us is one 驻住讜拽, they divided it into three 驻住讜拽讬诐: the 驻住讜拽 of 讜讬讗诪专 讛壮 讗诇 诪砖讛 讛谞讛 讗谞讻讬 讘讗 讗诇讬讱 讘注讘 讛注谞谉, so to them it was three 驻住讜拽讬诐. So, we see that we do not know exactly where a 驻住讜拽 is supposed to end and where a 驻住讜拽 is supposed to begin, and therefore we can't on our own count the 驻住讜拽讬诐 to see whether 讜讛转讙诇讞 is on this half of the 转讜专讛, or 讜讛转讙诇讞 is on the other half of the 转讜专讛. And it's interesting to note that the 诪讛专砖状讗 explains why the 讙诪专讗 prefers to bring these 驻住讜拽讬诐, and what is the importance of these 驻住讜拽讬诐, what do they show by showing that this is the half of the 转讜专讛, that is the half of the 驻住讜拽讬诐, etc. And he says that really this refers to the idea that in the 转讜专讛 we find that we could 讚专砖'谉 everything 诪状讟 驻谞讬诐 讟讛讜专, 诪状讟 驻谞讬诐 讟诪讗. Everything could be 讚专砖'谞讟 forty-nine ways to 讟讜诪讗讛, forty-nine ways to 讟讛专讛. In other words, everything could be translated for the side of 讟讜诪讗讛 and for the side of 讟讛专讛. But this only refers to 驻住讜拽讬诐 and to words, but the letters themselves, the letters individually, they are only 拽讚讜砖讛, only 讟讛专讛, they refer to the 砖诪讜转 of 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, it says, to the names of 讛砖诐. And this is what the 讙诪专讗 is trying to tell us, that the 讜讗讜 of 讙讞讜谉 is the middle of the letters of the 转讜专讛, to tell us that when it comes to the letters of the 转讜专讛, there is no such thing as 讟讜诪讗讛, because 讙讞讜谉 refers to the snake, 讙讞讜谉 means the one that goes on the stomach, that refers to the snake. Now, the snake is the source of all 讟讜诪讗讛, because this reminds us of the 谞讞砖 讛拽讚诪讜谞讬, the first snake, who is the source of all 讟讜诪讗讛. So, what the 讙诪专讗 is saying here, that when it comes to the letters of the 转讜专讛, there is no place for 讟讜诪讗讛, because as we see The 讜 from 讙讞讜谉 is right in the middle. So this will be 诪驻住讬拽 in the middle of the 讙讞讜谉, in the middle of the 谞讞砖, not to allow the 谞讞砖 to have any hold on. So therefore, as far as the letters of the 转讜专讛 are concerned, there is no such thing as 讟讜诪讗讛. And then the 讙诪专讗 continues that the word 讚专砖 讚专砖 is the middle of the words of the 转讜专讛. And he explains that two times 讚专砖 refers to the

Dual Torah Interpretations of Purity vs Impurity

讚专砖 that we could have to the side of 讟讛专讛, and the 讚专砖 we could have to the side of 讟讜诪讗讛. As it was actually at that time that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 investigated, he investigated to see why one 拽专讘谉 was eaten and one 拽专讘谉 wasn't eaten. So he investigated one to the side of 讟讜诪讗讛, and one to the side of 讟讛专讛. So the 驻住讜拽 is saying here that 讚专砖 讚专砖, there are two 讚专砖讜转, you could 讚专砖谉 it one to the side of 讟讜诪讗讛 and one to the side of 讟讛专讛. And then we say that 讜讛转讙诇讞 is half of the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of the 转讜专讛. The 诪讛专砖状讗 explains this goes along the same line, because really it's hard to see how in a complete 驻住讜拽 of the 转讜专讛 we could 讚专砖谉 it to the side of 讟讜诪讗讛 or to the side of 讟讛专讛, because after we have a complete 驻住讜拽, we could only learn it one way. But nevertheless, even when we have a complete 驻住讜拽, it could be 谞讜讙注, important for 讟讜诪讗讛 or for 讟讛专讛. And that's what we bring out from this 讜讛转讙诇讞. Because this 驻住讜拽 讜讛转讙诇讞, that speaks about the 谞讙注, is not in the case when a person is definitely a 诪爪讜专注. That is a 驻住讜拽 that deals with a person who is a 住驻拽 whether he is a 诪爪讜专注 or not. So here we're dealing with a with a 讚讬谉 which is a little bit to the side of 讟讜诪讗讛 and a little bit to the side of 讟讛专讛. And then he

Yekarshemna Hazir Meyar and Its Symbolism

continues when the 讙诪专讗 brings the 驻住讜拽 讬讻专住诪谞讛 讞讝讬专 诪讬注专 concerning half of the 住驻专 转讛诇讬诐, he says, because the 讞讝讬专 诪讬注专 refers, is 诪专诪讝 to 注砖讜, and 注砖讜 is 诪专诪讝 for the 讻讞 讛讟讜诪讗讛 which comes from the 谞讞砖 讛拽讚诪讜谞讬. So since we're trying to be 诪讘讟诇 the 讻讞 讛讟讜诪讗讛, so that's why we bring the 驻住讜拽 讬讻专住诪谞讛 讞讝讬专 诪讬注专. And then he brings the 驻住讜拽 讜讛讜讗 专讞讜诐 讬讻驻专 注讜谉. And he says this is the half of the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of 转讛诇讬诐 to show us that the whole idea of putting together the 讗讜转讬讜转 to the words and to the 驻住讜拽讬诐 is because we 讚讗讜讜谉 to 讛砖诐, that 讛砖诐 should have pity on us, and he should not destroy us with his anger. And that is brought out from the 驻住讜拽 讜讛讜讗 专讞讜诐 讬讻驻专 注讜谉. And now we will continue with the 讙诪专讗. 讬转专 注诇讬讜 转讛诇讬诐 砖诪讜谞讛, 转讛诇讬诐 has eight more than that. 讞住专 诪诪谞讜 讚讘专讬 讛讬诪讬诐 砖诪讜谞讛, and 讚讘专讬 讛讬诪讬诐 has eight less than that. But 转讜住驻讜转 asks a 拽砖讬讗, how can we say that 转讛诇讬诐 has eight more 驻住讜拽讬诐 than the 转讜专讛, when even 转讜住驻讜转 says, if every 驻住讜拽 in 转讛诇讬诐 would only be made up of three words, it still wouldn't be as much as the 讞讜诪砖. But the 诪讛专砖状讗 asks a 拽砖讬讗 on 转讜住驻讜转, didn't the 讙诪专讗 say before that we are not 讘拽讬 in the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of the 转讜专讛? So maybe what the 讙诪专讗 means is that could be the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of the 转讜专讛 are much longer than the 驻住讜拽讬诐 that we have, and therefore there are more 驻住讜拽讬诐 in 转讛诇讬诐 than the 讞讜诪砖. So what is 转讜住驻讜转 拽砖讬讗, that even if every 驻住讜拽 of 转讛诇讬诐 would be made up of three words, it still wouldn't be more than 讞讜诪砖? Maybe the 驻住讜拽讬诐 of 讞讜诪砖 are much longer than we have it, and therefore there are much less 驻住讜拽讬诐 in the 讞讜诪砖, so there are more 驻住讜拽讬诐 in 转讛诇讬诐 than the 讞讜诪砖. But the 转驻讗专转 砖诪讜讗诇 on the 诪讛专砖状讗 says he doesn't understand the 诪讛专砖状讗's 拽砖讬讗 on 转讜住驻讜转, because here we're going according to the one that just said a certain amount of 驻住讜拽讬诐 that we have in the 转讜专讛. He said clearly that we have 5,888 驻住讜拽讬诐. And based on that, the 讙诪专讗 said that 转讛诇讬诐 has more. So 转讜住驻讜转 asks, now that you're telling that there are 5,888 驻住讜拽讬诐 in the 转讜专讛, how can you say that there are more 驻住讜拽讬诐 in 转讛诇讬诐? In other words, if the 讙诪专讗's 拽砖讬讗 would not be based on the statement he said before that there are 5,888 驻住讜拽讬诐 in the 转讜专讛, 诪讛专砖状讗's 拽砖讬讗 would be a good 拽砖讬讗. We don't know how many 驻住讜拽讬诐 there are in the 转讜专讛, so maybe there are more 驻住讜拽讬诐 in 转讛诇讬诐 than in the 转讜专讛. But now that we said that there are 5,888 驻住讜拽讬诐 in the 转讜专讛, so if that is so, 转讜住驻讜转 asks, how can we have more 驻住讜拽讬诐 in 转讛诇讬诐 over 转讜专讛? Because even if every 驻住讜拽 would be made up of three letters, of three words, still there would be more 驻住讜拽讬诐 in the 转讜专讛 than in 转讛诇讬诐. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 讜砖谞谞转诐, it says in the 转讜专讛, you should teach it. So the

Shnanetam as Sharp Teaching

驻砖讜讟 驻砖讟 in the word 讜砖谞谞转诐 means to teach. But here we 讚专砖谉 the word 讜砖谞谞转诐 from a different meaning: the word 讜砖谞谞转诐 from the word 砖讬谞讜谉, which means sharp. 砖讬讛讬讜 讚讘专讬 转讜专讛 诪讞讜讚讚讬诐 讘驻讬讱, that the words of 转讜专讛 should be sharp in your mouth, meaning 砖讗诐 讬砖讗诇讱 讗讚诐 讚讘专, if someone will ask you something, 讗诇 转讙诪讙诐 讜转讗诪专 诇讜, do not stammer and tell him, 讗诇讗 讗诪讜专 诇讜 诪讬讚, but tell him right away, tell him very clearly and very sharply. How do we know that? 砖谞讗诪专, because the 驻住讜拽 says, 讗诪讜专 诇讞讻诪讛 讗讞讜转讬 讗转. You should say to the 讞讻诪讛, which means to the 转讜专讛, you are my sister. 专砖状讬 says the 专讗讬讛 from this 驻住讜拽 is that you should be clear in the words of 转讜专讛 as clear you are in the fact that a person is not allowed to marry his sister. 讜讗讜诪专, there is another 驻住讜拽 that says, 拽砖专诐 注诇 讗爪讘注讜转讬讱, you should tie them on your fingers, 讻转讘诐 注诇 诇讜讞 诇讘讱, write it on the 诇讜讞 of your heart. Here we see how clear it's supposed to be in your mind. 讜讗讜诪专, there is another 驻住讜拽 that says, 讻讞爪讬诐 讘讬讚 讙讬讘讜专, like the arrows in the hand of the strong man, 讻谉 讘谞讬 讛谞注讜专讬诐, the same way should be the young children. And as 专砖状讬 says, when we speak of children, really we mean 转诇诪讬讚讬诐. Because we know that 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 are referred to as children. And 专砖状讬 brings 专讗讬讜转 from different 驻住讜拽讬诐 where they call 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 讘谞讬诐. So when the 驻住讜拽 says, 讻讞爪讬诐 讘讬讚 讙讬讘讜专, just like the arrows in the hand of the 讙讬讘讜专, so should be the 讘谞讬 讛谞注讜专讬诐, the young children, that means that the 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 that they study 转讜专讛, the 转讜专讛 should be so clear to them as the arrows in the hand of the 讙讬讘讜专. 讜讗讜诪专, there is another 驻住讜拽 that says, 讞爪讬 讙讬讘讜专 砖谞讜谞讬诐, that the arrows of the 讙讬讘讜专 should be sharp. 讜讗讜诪专, there is another 驻住讜拽, 讞爪讬讱 砖谞讜谞讬诐, your arrows are sharp, 注诪讬诐 转讞转讬讱 讬驻诇讜, nations will fall in front of you. And this all refers to learning of 转讜专讛, that it should be very sharp in your mind. 讜讗讜诪专, there is another 驻住讜拽 that says, 讗砖专讬 讛讙讘专, good is the person, 讗砖专 诪讬诇讗 讗转 讗砖驻转讜 诪讛诐, that filled up his garbage with it. And 专砖状讬 says, even though it refers to 转讜专讛, but since we used the term 讞爪讬诐 before, arrows, that's why here he uses the term 讗砖驻转讜, the garbage. So it's good for the person who is full of it. 诇讗 讬讘讜砖讜, they shouldn't be embarrassed, 讻讬 讬讚讘专讜, when they will talk, 讗转 讗讜讬讘讬诐, with their enemies, 讘砖注专, at the gate. And the enemies here that we're talking about are the enemies in 转讜专讛, which means when you argue with somebody in 转讜专讛, so you should not be embarrassed when you talk to them, because you will know what you are saying. And the 讙诪专讗 explains,

Enemies at the Gate: Learning Disagreements

诪讗讬 讗讜讬讘讬诐 讘砖注专? What do we mean when we say the enemies at the gate? 讗诪专 专讘 讞讬讬讗 讘专 讗讘讗, 专讘 讞讬讬讗 讘专 讗讘讗 said, 讗驻讬诇讜 讛讗讘 讜讘谞讜, even as father and a son, 讛专讘 讜转诇诪讬讚讜, or a teacher and his student, 砖注讜住拽讬谉 讘转讜专讛 讘砖注专 讗讞讚, when they learn 转讜专讛 in one gate, when they study 转讜专讛 together, 谞注砖讬诐 讗讜讬讘讬诐 讝讛 讗转 讝讛, they become enemies one to another. Because when you learn 转讜专讛, each one gives his own opinion, each one asks questions, and they many times disagree, so it's as if they become enemies one to another. But 讜讗讬谞诐 讝讝讬诐 诪砖诐, they do not move from there, 注讚 砖谞注砖讬诐 讗讜讛讘讬诐 讝讛 讗转 讝讛, until they become friends one to another. 砖谞讗诪专, he quotes a 驻住讜拽, 讗转 讜讛讘 讘住讜驻讛. This is a 驻住讜拽 that we have in 驻专砖转 讞讜拽转. The 驻砖讜讟 驻砖讟 in the 驻住讜拽 is that 讛砖诐 performed many miracles to the 讬讬讚谉. The 转讜专讛 said, 注诇 讻谉 讬讗诪专 讘住驻专 诪诇讞诪讜转 讛壮, therefore, it is written in the 住驻专 that when you will discuss the 诪诇讞诪讜转, the wars 讛砖诐 had, so it says there, 讗转 讜讛讘 讘住讜驻讛. One of the things that they will mention is that 讛砖诐 performed many miracles, he gave us many miracles 讘住讜驻讛, by the 讬诐 住讜祝. But here the 讙诪专讗 讚专砖谞壮住 it differently. 讙诪专讗 讚专砖谞壮住 it, 讗诇 转拽专讬 讘住讜驻讛 讗诇讗 讘住讜驻讛.

Et Ve'Hev at the End: Love after Conflict

Do not read it 讘住讜驻讛, but read 讘住讜驻讛. 讘住讜驻讛 means at the end. And 讗转 讜讛讘 讘住讜驻讛 means 讜讛讘 comes from the word 讗讛讘讛. So it's as if it would say that there is 讗讛讘讛 讘住讜驻讛, there is love at the end. And this refers to the 诪诇讞诪讜转 讛壮. Since the 驻住讜拽 starts off with the words 注诇 讻谉 讬讗诪专 讘住驻专 诪诇讞诪讜转 讛壮, so the 讙诪专讗 讚专砖谞壮住 it that we're talking here about a 诪诇讞诪讛 that is done with a 住驻专, a war that is concerning a 住驻专. That means a war that is concerning learning. That when two people argue in 讚讘专讬 转讜专讛, so what happens? 讗转 讜讛讘 讘住讜驻讛, that at the end there is love, that even though when they start learning and they start arguing they are like enemies one to another, but the end is that they become friends one to another. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 讜砖诪转诐, and the 转讜专讛 says 讜砖诪转诐 讗转 讚讘专讬 讗诇讛, that you should put these words on your heart, refers to the words of 转讜专讛, so the 讙诪专讗 讚专砖谞壮住 讜砖诪转诐 is made up of two words, 住诐 转诐. 住诐 means poison, 转诐 means complete, which means it's a kind of 住诐 that is complete, that is good. In other words, it is not poison that hurts a person, but on the contrary, it is a kind of medicine that gives life to a person. 谞诪砖诇讛 转讜专讛 讻住诐 讞讬讬诐. 转讜专讛 is compared to 住诐 讞讬讬诐, to a kind of medicine that gives you life. And it gives a 诪砖诇. 诪砖诇 诇讗讚诐, a parable to a person 砖讛讻讛 讗转 讘谞讜 诪讻讛 讙讚讜诇讛, he hit his son very hard, 讜讛谞讬讞 诇讜 专讟讬讬讛 注诇 诪讻转讜, and he put a bandaid on the wound, 讜讗诪专 诇讜, and he said to him, 讘谞讬, my son, 讻诇 讝诪谉 砖讛专讟讬讬讛 讝讜 注诇 诪讻转讱, as long as this bandaid is on your wound, 讗讻讜诇 诪讛 砖讛谞讗转讱, eat what you desire, 讜砖转讛 诪讛 砖讛谞讗转讱, 讜砖转讛 诪讛 砖讛谞讗转讱, and drink what you desire, what you have pleasure from, 讜专讞讜抓 讜专讞讜抓, and you could wash, 讘讬谉 讘讞诪讬谉 讘讬谉 讘爪讜谞谉, whether with hot water or with cold water, 讜讗讬谉 讗转讛 诪转讬讬专讗, and you don't have to be afraid. But 讜讗诐 讗转讛 诪注讘讬专讛, if you will take it off, 讛专讬 讛讬讗 诪注诇讛 谞讜诪讬, there will be growths that will come upon it. But if you keep your Band-Aid on, then you could do whatever you want. 讻讱 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, the same with 讛砖诐, 讗诪专 诇讛诐 诇讬砖专讗诇, he said to the 讗讬讚谉, 讘谞讬, my children, 讘专讗转讬 讬爪专 讛专注, I created the 讬爪专 讛专注, 讜讘专讗转讬 诇讜 转讜专讛 转讘诇讬谉, and I created the 转讜专讛 to be the spices for the 讬爪专 讛专注. 讜讗诐 讗转诐 注讜住拽讬诐 讘转讜专讛, if you learn 转讜专讛, 讗讬谉 讗转诐 谞诪住专讬诐 讘讬讚讜, you will not be given over in his hand. 砖谞讗诪专, as the 驻住讜拽 says, 讛诇讗 讗诐 转讬讟讬讘 砖讗转, this is what 讛砖诐 said to 拽讬谉, he said to him, if you will be good, 砖讗转, you'll be forgiven. But 砖讗转 also has the meaning of being picked up. So what the 驻住讜拽 is saying, 讛诇讗 讗诐 转讬讟讬讘, if you will be good, and the word 讟讜讘 also refers to 转讜专讛, as the 驻住讜拽 says, 讻讬 诇拽讞 讟讜讘 谞转转讬 诇讻诐. What he's saying here, 讗诐 转讬讟讬讘, if you will have this 讟讜讘, this 转讜专讛, 砖讗转, you will be picked up, you will be elevated beyond the 讬爪专 讛专注, that you'll have no reason to be afraid of your 讬爪专 讛专注. 讜讗诐 讗讬谉 讗转诐 注讜住拽讬诐 讘转讜专讛, but if you will not be learning 转讜专讛, 讗转诐 谞诪住专讬诐 讘讬讚讜, you will be given over into his hand. 砖谞讗诪专, as the 驻住讜拽 says, 诇驻转讞 讞讟讗转 专讜讘抓. At the door, the sin lies, so you are able to do 注讘讬专讜转. 讜诇讗 注讜讚, not only that, 讗诇讗 砖讻诇 诪砖讗讜 讜诪转谞讜 讘讱, all the business of the 讬爪专 讛专注 will be only you. In other words, he will be completely involved in trying to make you sin. 砖谞讗诪专, as it says, 讜讗诇讬讱 转砖讜拽转讜, and to you will be his desire. But on the other hand, 讜讗诐 讗转讛 专讜爪讛, if you do want, 讗转讛 诪讜砖诇 讘讜, you could control him, you could rule over him. 砖谞讗诪专, because the 驻住讜拽 says, 讜讗转讛 转诪砖诇 讘讜, you will rule over him. But this is only if a person studies 转讜专讛. But it's interesting to note that it says in 住驻专讬诐 that we see here in the 讙诪专讗, the 讙诪专讗 did not say that 讛砖诐 said I created the 讬爪专 讛专注 and I created the 转讜专讛 to fight the 讬爪专 讛专注 or the 转讜专讛 to destroy the 讬爪专 讛专注, but on the contrary, the 讙诪专讗 says I created the 讬爪专 讛专注 and I created the 转讜专讛 to be a 转讘诇讬谉 to the 讬爪专 讛专注. 转讘诇讬谉 means spices. Now, spices does not destroy the food. Spices is put into the food that if the food doesn't taste so well, what it does is it changes the taste of the food and it makes that the food that doesn't taste so good should start tasting good. And the same thing is with the 讬爪专 讛专注. The

Torah as Spice for the Evil Inclination

purpose of the 转讜专讛 is not to fight the 讬爪专 讛专注, so to speak, to kill the 讬爪专 讛专注, to destroy the 讬爪专 讛专注, but the purpose is to overcome the 讬爪专 讛专注 in such a way that the 讬爪专 讛专注 himself will realize that it's important to do 诪爪讜讜转. The 讬爪专 讛专注 himself will help out a 讗讬讚 to do 诪爪讜讜转. As we find in the 讙诪专讗 where it says that when the 驻住讜拽 says, 讜讗讛讘转 讗转 讛砖诐 讗诇讜拽讬讱 讘讻诇 诇讘讘讱, you should love 讛砖诐 with all your heart, the 讙诪专讗 says that really it should have said 讘讻诇 诇讘讱. 诇讘 is a heart. With all your heart would be 讘讻诇 诇讘讱. Why does it say 讘讻诇 诇讘讘讱 with two 讘讬转讬谉? To tell us that you have to love 讛砖诐 讘砖谞讬 讬爪专讬讱, with both your 讬爪专讬诐, with the 讬爪专 讟讜讘 and with the 讬爪专 讛专注. In other words, the purpose of a 讗讬讚 is that he should serve 讛砖诐 with the 讬爪专 讛专注 himself. In other words, he should take those 诪讬讚讜转 that really are 诪讬讚讜转 of the 讬爪专 讛专注, which seem to be things which are not so good, and utilize them for the good, utilize the 讬爪专 讛专注 himself for serving 讛砖诐, for learning 转讜专讛 and doing 诪爪讜讜转. And this is what the 讙诪专讗 means here, too: that 讛砖诐 created the 讬爪专 讛专注 and created the 转讜专讛 as 转讘诇讬谉 to the 讬爪专 讛专注, as spices to the 讬爪专 讛专注, what the 讙诪专讗 means is that you could take the 转讜专讛 and through the 转讜专讛 you could even change the 讬爪专 讛专注, you spice up the 讬爪专 讛专注, that the 讬爪专 讛专注 himself starts tasting good, which means starts helping a 讗讬讚 in serving 讛砖诐. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues:

The Evil Inclination鈥檚 Daily Renewal

转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 拽砖讛 讬爪专 讛专注, the 讬爪专 讛专注 is bad, is hard, 砖讗驻讬诇讜 讬讜爪专讜 拽专讗讜 专注, that even his Creator called him bad. 砖谞讗诪专, as the 驻住讜拽 says, that 讛砖诐 said 讻讬 讬爪专 诇讘 讛讗讚诐 专注 诪谞注讜专讬讜, that the 讬爪专 of the heart of the person is bad from its youth. So we see that 讛砖诐 Himself calls that 讬爪专, calls him bad, calls him 专注. And as the 诪讛专砖"讗 explains, that this is a very big 讞讬讚讜砖, because normally the 讚专讱 讗专抓 is that a person who makes something will never speak bad about it. And here we see 讛砖诐, who is the Creator of the 讬爪专 讛专注, He Himself calls the 讬爪专 讛专注 专注. So that shows how bad the 讬爪专 讛专注 is. 讗诪专 专讘讬 讬爪讞拽, 专讘讬 讬爪讞拽 said, 讬爪专讜 砖诇 讗讚诐 诪转讞讚砖 注诇讬讜 讘讻诇 讬讜诐, the 讬爪专 讛专注 of a person renews himself every day on the person, trying to rule over the person. 砖谞讗诪专, it says, 专拽 专注 讻诇 讛讬讜诐, he is bad every day. So every day he gets new strength to fight the person. 讜讗诪专 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 诇讜讬, 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 诇讜讬 said, 讬爪专讜 砖诇 讗讚诐 诪转讙讘专 注诇讬讜 讘讻诇 讬讜诐, the 讬爪专 讛专注 of a person strengthens himself every day over the person, 讜诪讘拽砖 讛诪讬转讜, and wants to kill him, 砖谞讗诪专, as the 驻住讜拽 says, 爪讜驻讛 专砖注 诇爪讚讬拽, the 专砖注 looks to the 爪讚讬拽, 讜诪讘拽砖 诇讛诪讬转讜, and wants to kill him. And here the 专砖注 refers to the 讬爪专 讛专注, and the 爪讚讬拽 refers to the 讗讬讚, that the 讬爪专 讛专注 looks every day to the 讗讬讚 and wants to kill him. 讜讗诇诪诇讗 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗 注讝专讜, and if 讛砖诐 would not help him, 讗讬谞讜 讬讻讜诇 诇讜, he wouldn't be able to fight him, he wouldn't be able to overcome the 讬爪专 讛专注. 砖谞讗诪专, it says, 讗诇讜拽讬诐 诇讗 讬注讝讘谞讜 讘讬讚讜, 讛砖诐 does not leave him in his hand. So, it's because of 讛砖诐 that we're able to overcome the 讬爪专 讛专注. And the reason the 讙诪专讗 says that the 讬爪专 讛专注 wants to kill a person, really all the 讬爪专 讛专注 wants to do is make a person do an 注讘讬专讛, but the truth is after the 讬爪专 讛专注 makes the person do the 注讘讬专讛, then the 讬爪专 讛专注 himself goes to 讛砖诐, complain against the person, and then he gets the right to kill the person. As we know, the 讙诪专讗 says that the 讬爪专 讛专注 himself is the 诪诇讗讱 讛诪讜转, and therefore the 讙诪专讗 uses the 诇砖讜谉 that every day the 讬爪专 讛专注 wants to kill the person. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues,

转谞讗 讚讘讬 专讘讬 讬砖诪注讗诇, in the 讬砖讬讘讛 of 专讘讬 讬砖诪注讗诇 they learned: 讘谞讬, my son, 讗诐 驻讙注 讘讱 诪谞讜讜诇 讝讛, if this 诪谞讜讜诇, if this rotten, bad person meets up with you, and who is that? That is the 讬爪专 讛专注, 诪砖讻讛讜 诇讘讬转 讛诪讚专砖, pull him into the 讬砖讬讘讛, into the 讘讬转 讛诪讚专砖 to learn. Because as we said before, the 转讜专讛 is the 转讘诇讬谉 against the 讬爪专 讛专注. 讗诐 讗讘谉 讛讜讗, 谞讬诪讜讞, if he is a stone, he will melt, 讜讗诐 讘专讝诇 讛讜讗, 诪转驻讜爪抓, if he is metal, he will fall apart. 砖谞讗诪专, as it says, 讛诇讗 讻讛 讚讘专讬 讻讗砖 谞讗诐 讛', my words, 讛砖诐 says, are like fire, 讜讻驻讟讬砖 讬驻讜爪抓 住诇注, and like a hammer will break apart the 住诇注, the stone. So, from here we see that if it's like metal, it will be 诪转驻讜爪抓. And 转讜住驻讜转 asks, 讟讗拽注, what's the 专讗讬讛 from this 驻住讜拽? That if it's like metal, it'll be 诪转驻讜爪抓, it'll make the metal fall apart? All we see in this 驻住讜拽 is that the hammer will make the 住诇注 fall apart. But where do we see that the 讘专讝诇 will fall apart? So, one of the 转讬专讜爪讬诐 that 转讜住驻讜转 gives is that the 专讗讬讛 is just the opposite: that we learn 驻砖讟 in the 驻住讜拽, 讜讻驻讟讬砖 讬驻讜爪抓 住诇注, is the 住诇注 that will break the 驻讟讬砖. 住诇注 is the stone that will break the 驻讟讬砖, the hammer. Now the hammer is made of metal, the 住诇注, that would refer to the 转讜专讛, so the 住诇注 will make the metal, the 驻讟讬砖, be 诪转驻讜爪抓. And from here we see that if it's a 讘专讝诇, if it's metal, it'll be 诪转驻讜爪抓. Now we said before, 讗诐 讗讘谉 讛讜讗 谞讬诪讜讞, if it's like a stone, if the 讬爪专 讛专注 is like a stone, he will melt. How do we know that? 砖谞讗诪专, because the 驻住讜拽 says, 讛讜讬 讻诇 爪诪讗 诇讻讜 诇诪讬诐, anybody who is thirsty should go to water, and we know that refers to 转讜专讛 because 讗讬谉 诪讬诐 讗诇讗 转讜专讛. 转讜专讛 is called water. 讜讗讜诪专, there's a 驻住讜拽 that says, 讗讘谞讬诐 砖讞拽讜 诪讬诐, that water could rub out stones. So, since 转讜专讛 is compared to water, so we see that 转讜专讛, which is the water, could rub out and could make the stone melt. And this is what he said, if you have a 讬爪专 讛专注, and there are different types of 讬爪专 讛专注s, certain 讬爪专 讛专注s could be compared to stone, certain 讬爪专 讛专注s could be compared to metal, as is explained in the 住驻专讬诐, but by bringing him into the 讘讬转 讛诪讚专砖 and learning 转讜专讛, you will overcome the 讬爪专 讛专注. And now the

Father鈥檚 Obligations: Marriage and Trade Teaching

讙诪专讗 goes back to the original 讘专讬讬转讗 as we brought before, where the 讘专讬讬转讗 mentions the different things that a father is obligated to do to his son. And one of the things mentioned in the 讘专讬讬转讗 was 诇讛砖讬讗讜 讗砖讛, you have to see that your son should marry a wife. The 讙诪专讗 asks, 诪谞诇谉, where do we know that from? The 讙诪专讗 quotes the 驻住讜拽, 讚讻转讬讘, it says, 拽讞讜 谞砖讬诐, take wives, 讜讛讜诇讬讚讜 讘谞讬诐 讜讘谞讜转, and give birth to sons and daughters, 讜拽讞讜 诇讘谞讬讻诐 谞砖讬诐, and you should take wives to your sons, 讜讗转 讘谞讜转讬讻诐 转谞讜 诇讗谞砖讬诐, and your daughters you should give to men. So, here we see it's an obligation to take wives for the sons. Then the 讙诪专讗 asks, this 驻住讜拽, it's a two things, you should take wives to your sons, and your daughters you should give to the men. The 讙诪专讗 asks, 讘砖诇诪讗 讘谞讜 讘讬讚讜, 诪诪讬诇讗 when we talk about a son, it's in his hands. He is able to take a wife for a son, because the custom is that the man takes the woman. So, since he is the father of the son, so it's in his hands to take a wife for his son. 讗诇讗 讘转讜, but when we say that you should give your daughter to men, 讘讬讚讜 讛讬讗, is it in his hands? Can the father force a man to take his daughter for a wife? The 讙诪专讗 answers, 讛讻讬 拽讗诪专 诇讛讜, this is what he said to them: 谞讬转讘 诇讛 诪讬讚讬 讜谞诇讘砖讛 讜谞讻住讬讛, let's give them things, clothes, and have them get dressed, 讻讬 讛讬讻讬 讚拽驻爪讜 注诇讛 讗讬谞砖讬, in order that men should jump on them. In other words, you have to make your daughter look in such a way that men should want to marry her. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues with the 讘专讬讬转讗 that we learned before, that one of the obligations of the father to teach his son is 诇诇诪讚讜 诇诇诪讚讜 讗讜诪谞讜转, to teach him a trade. And the 讙诪专讗 asks: 诪谞诇谉, how do we know that? 讗诪专 讞讝拽讬讛, so 讞讝拽讬讛 said, 讗诪专 拽专讗, the 驻住讜拽 in 拽讛诇转 says: 专讗讛 讞讬讬诐 注诐 讗砖讛 讗砖专 讗讛讘转, you should see life with the wife that you love. Now 讞讬讬诐, life, that refers to a trade, because when you have a trade you're able to make a living. And the 驻住讜拽 says you should see life with the wife that you love. Now this word, 讗砖讛, that the 驻住讜拽 says here, there are two 驻砖讟讬诐. One 驻砖讟 is that 讗砖讛 means really a wife, and another 驻砖讟 is that 讗砖讛 refers to the 转讜专讛. And the 讙诪专讗 explains: 讗诐 讗砖讛 诪诪砖 讛讬讗, if the 驻砖讟 in the 驻住讜拽 is that the word 讗砖讛 means 诪诪砖 a wife, so what the 驻住讜拽 is saying, 讻砖诐 砖讞讬讬讘 诇讛砖讬讗讜 讗砖讛, so just like a father is obligated to marry his son to a wife, 讻讱 讞讬讬讘

Obligation to Teach a Trade and Skills

诇诇诪讚讜 讗讜诪谞讜转, so too he's obligated to teach him a trade. So the 驻住讜拽 says you should see life with the wife that you love, that means that together with the wife, just like the wife there's an obligation on the father to see that his son marries a wife, so too there's an obligation on the father to see that he has life, that he has a trade. 讗诐 转讜专讛 讛讬讗, if the word 讗砖讛 in this 驻住讜拽 refers to the 转讜专讛, the 驻砖讟 is 讻砖诐 砖讞讬讬讘 诇诇诪讚讜 转讜专讛, just like he's obligated to teach him 转讜专讛, 讻讱 讞讬讬讘 诇诇诪讚讜 讗讜诪谞讜转, so too he is obligated to teach him a trade. Then the 讘专讬讬转讗 said: 讜讬砖 讗讜诪专讬诐 讗祝 诇讛砖讬讟讜 讘谞讛专, some say that there's also an obligation on the father to teach his son how to swim in a river. And the 讙诪专讗 asks: 诪讗讬 讟注诪讗, what is the reason? And the 讙诪专讗 answers: 讞讬讜转讬讛 讛讬讗, that is his life. In other words, there could be a time that he will be drowning, and this could save his life. Therefore, there's an obligation on the father to teach his son how to swim. Then it said in the 讘专讬讬转讗, 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 讗讜诪专, 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 said: 讻诇 砖讗讬谞讜 诪诇诪讚讜 讗讜诪谞讜转 诪诇诪讚讜 诇讬住讟讜转, anybody who doesn't teach his son a trade is as if he teaches him how to steal. So the 讙诪专讗 asks: 诇讬住讟讜转 住诇拽讗 讚注转讱? How can you say that when you don't teach him a trade you teach him how to steal? 讗诇讗, the 讙诪专讗 says, 讻讗讬诇讜 诪诇诪讚讜 诇讬住讟讜转, as if he teaches him how to steal. Because since he will not have from where to make a living, he is going to steal. So by not teaching the child a trade, you are so to speak as if you teach him how to steal. Then the 讙诪专讗 asks: 诪讗讬 讘讬谞讬讬讛讜, what is the difference between the two? The 讘专讬讬转讗 of 转谞讗 拽诪讗 says first we say that you're supposed to teach your son a trade, and the 讙诪专讗 gave the reason before, because it says 专讗讛 讞讬讬诐 注诐 讗砖讛 讗砖专 讗讛讘转, that you have to see life to your son. In other words, you must give your son something to make a living from. And then 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 added that if you don't teach him a trade it's as if you teach him how to steal. What is the difference between these two sayings? It seems like 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 is adding something, that not only must you teach him a trade because you must give him something to make a living from, but he's adding that if you don't, it's as if you teach him how to steal.

Distinguishing Rav Yehuda鈥檚 View from the First Baraita

What is 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 trying to add here? What is the difference between what 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 said and what the 转谞讗 拽诪讗 said? And the 讙诪专讗 answers: 讗讬讻讗 讘讬谞讬讬讛讜, the difference is 讚讗讙诪专讬讛 注讬住拽讗, you teach him business. According to the 转谞讗 拽诪讗, he uses the positive part. He says you have to teach him something to make a living from. So if you don't teach him a trade, you just teach him how to do business, you're also giving him something to make a living from. But according to 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛, who uses the negative term, he says you're not allowed to teach him how to steal. By not teaching him an 讗讜诪谞讜转, it's as if you're teaching him how to steal. So by teaching him business it's not enough, because sometimes he won't have from where to do business, and he won't have where to make a living, and that could bring him to steal. So according to 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛, it is not enough if you teach him business, you must teach him a trade. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, we learn in the 讘专讬讬转讗: 讻诇 诪爪讜转 讛讗讘 注诇 讛讘谉, that all the 诪爪讜转 of the father on the son, men and women are both equally 讞讬讬讘, both equally obligated to perform. And the 讙诪专讗 asks: 诪讗讬 讻诇 诪爪讜转 讛讗讘 注诇 讛讘谉, what does the 诪砖谞讛 mean when it said all the 诪爪讜转 of the father on the son? What do we mean? 讗讬诇讬诪讗, if we're going to say 讻诇 诪爪讜转讗 讚诪讬讞讬讬讘 讗讘讗 诇诪讬注讘讚 诇讘专讬讛, that all the 诪爪讜转 that a father is obligated to do to the son, that if that's what it means, 谞砖讬诐 讞讬讬讘讜转? How could the 诪砖谞讛 say that 谞砖讬诐 are obligated, women are obligated? 讜讛转谞讬讗, didn't we learn: 讛讗讘 讞讬讬讘 讘讘谞讜 诇诪讜诇讜 讜诇驻讚讜转讜, that a father is obligated to perform 诪讬诇讛 on his son and to redeem his son the 诪爪讜讛 of 驻讚讬讜谉 讛讘谉, 讗讘讬讜 讗讬谉 讗诪讜 诇讗, the father is obligated but the mother not. So how can we say that when the 诪砖谞讛 says that all the 诪爪讜转 that the father on the son women are also obligated? So if it means the 诪爪讜转 the father is supposed to do to the son, and there we say that the women are also obligated, that is not true. Because we know that those 诪爪讜转 that the father is supposed to do to the son, only the father is obligated to do it, but not the mother. Therefore, 讗诪专 专讘 讬讛讜讚讛, so 专讘 讬讛讜讚讛 said: 讛讻讬 拽讗诪专, this is what does the 诪砖谞讛 mean: 讻诇 诪爪讜转 讛讗讘 讛诪讜讟诇讜转 注诇 讛讘谉 诇注砖讜转 诇讗讘讬讜, all 诪爪讜转 of the father that the son is supposed to do to the father. So on that we say, 讗讞讚 讗谞砖讬诐 讜讗讞讚 谞砖讬诐 讞讬讬讘讬谉, men and women are both obligated. In other words, the 诪爪讜转 of 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘 讜讗诐, the 诪爪讜讛 that a son is supposed to do to the father, those 诪爪讜转 also apply to a daughter, that a daughter is also supposed to do those things to her father. 转谞讬谞讗 诇讛讗 讚转谞讜 专讘谞谉, so it comes out that the 诪砖谞讛 is telling us what we learn in the 讘专讬讬转讗. It says in the 讘专讬讬转讗: 讗讬砖, concerning the 诪爪讜讛 of 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘, the 驻住讜拽 uses the term 讗讬砖. 讗讬谉 诇讬 讗诇讗 讗讬砖, so I would all think only a man, 讗砖讛 诪谞讬谉, how do we know a woman too? Because the 驻住讜拽 says: 讗讬砖 讗诪讜 讜讗讘讬讜 转讬专讗讜, that a man his father and mother they shall fear. So it starts off with the word 讗讬砖, so it's as if the 转讜专讛 is telling us that only a man is obligated to fear his father and mother. How do we know a woman too? 讻砖讛讜讗 讗讜诪专 转讬专讗讜, the 转讜专讛 says, you, plural, shall fear. It starts off with the word 讗讬砖, a man his father and mother you shall fear, referring to plural, to two people. 讛专讬 讻讗谉 砖谞讬诐, so here the 转讜专讛 is as if it is telling that two kinds of people are obligated to fear the father and the mother. Now,

Why Women Are Included in Honoring Parents

two kinds of people means the men and the woman, the son and the daughter. 讗诐 讻谉 诪讛 转诇诪讜讚 诇讜诪专 讗讬砖, so if so, if the 转讜专讛 really is telling us that sons and daughters both are equally obligated to fear the father and the mother, so why does the 转讜专讛 start off with the word 讗讬砖? The 讙诪专讗 answers: 讗讬砖 住讬驻拽 讘讬讚讜 诇注砖讜转, a man is able to do. 讗砖讛 讗讬谉 住讬驻拽 讘讬讚讛 诇注砖讜转, a woman is not always able to do, 诪驻谞讬 砖专砖讜转 讗讞专讬诐 注诇讬讛, because there is a 专砖讜转 of others over her. She is not her own boss, she is under the 讘注诇讘讗讟讬砖拽讬讬讟 of her husband, and therefore she doesn't always have the opportunity, the ability, to perform the 诪爪讜讛 of 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘. Therefore, the 转讜专讛 says 讗讬砖, because an 讗讬砖 is always able to do. And 转讜住驻讜转 explains that even though this 讚讬谉 that a woman is obligated to work for husband's sake, and the money that she will earn will go to the husband is only 诪讚专讘谞谉, but 诪讚讗讜专讬讬转讗 she doesn't have to work, so it comes out that 诪讚讗讜专讬讬转讗 she does have the time and the ability to perform the 诪爪讜讛 of 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘, nevertheless 转讜住驻讜转 says, but still she's usually in her own home, not in her father's house, so she doesn't usually have a chance to perform this 诪爪讜讛 of 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘. 讗诪专 专讘 讗讬讚讬 讘专 讗讘讬谉, 讗讬讚讬 讘专 讗讘讬谉 said, 讗诪专 专讘 in the name of 专讘: 谞转讙专砖讛, if she gets divorced, 砖谞讬讛诐 砖讜讬谉, they're both equal again. As soon as she doesn't have the 专砖讜转 of her husband over her, she is equal to the son concerning the 诪爪讜讛 of 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘 讜讗诐. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues:

Parallels Between Honoring Parents and Honoring God

转谞讜 专讘谞谉, and the 专讘谞谉 learned, 谞讗诪专, the 转讜专讛 says: 讻讘讚 讗转 讗讘讬讱 讜讗转 讗诪讱, you should honor your father and your mother, 讜谞讗诪专, there's another 驻住讜拽 that says: 讻讘讚 讗转 讛壮 诪讛讜谞讱, you should honor 讛壮 from your possessions. So we see here that the 转讜专讛 uses the same term concerning father and mother and concerning 讛壮. 讛砖讜讛 讛讻转讜讘 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘 讜讗诐 诇讻讘讜讚 讛诪拽讜诐. 讛壮 compared 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘 讜讗诐, the honoring of one's father and mother, to the honoring of 讛壮. 谞讗诪专, there's another 驻住讜拽 that says: 讗讬砖 讗诪讜 讜讗讘讬讜 转讬专讗讜, a man his mother and father he should fear, 讜谞讗诪专, there's another 驻住讜拽 that says: 讗转 讛壮 讗诇讛讬讱 转讬专讗 讜讗讜转讜 转注讘讜讚, you should fear 讛壮 your God and Him you should serve. So here too we see that the 转讜专讛 uses the same term. Concerning the father and the mother it says 转讬专讗讜, you shall fear, and concerning 讛壮 it says 转讬专讗, you shall fear. 讛砖讜讛 讛讻转讜讘 诪讜专讗转 讗讘 讜讗诐 诇诪讜专讗转 讛诪拽讜诐. 讛壮 compared the fear one should have for his father and mother, he compared it to the fear one should have to 讛壮. 谞讗诪专, there is another 驻住讜拽 that says: 诪拽诇诇 讗讘讬讜 讜讗诪讜 诪讜转 讬讜诪转, if someone curses his father or mother, he should die, 讜谞讗诪专, there's another 驻住讜拽 that says: 讗讬砖 讗讬砖 讻讬 讬拽诇诇 讗诇讛讬讜 讜谞砖讗 讞讟讗讜, if a man will curse his God, he will carry his sin. So here too we see that the 转讜专讛 uses the same term. Concerning the father and mother it says 诪拽诇诇 讗讘讬讜 讜讗诪讜, and concerning 讛壮 it also says 讻讬 讬拽诇诇 讗诇讛讬讜. 讛砖讜讛 讛讻转讜讘 讘专讻转 讗讘 讜讗诐 诇讘专讻转 讛诪拽讜诐. 讛壮 compared the blessing of one's father and mother to the blessing of 讛壮. Really we mean here the cursing, but the 讙诪专讗 uses a 诇砖讜谉 谞拽讬讛, a nice 诇砖讜谉, so instead of saying the word 拽诇诇讛, the 讙诪专讗 uses the word 讘专讻转 讗讘 讜讗诐 and 讘专讻转 讛诪拽讜诐. But what the 驻住讜拽 the 讙诪专讗 means is that the 驻住讜拽 compares the 注讘讬专讛 of one cursing his father and mother to the 注讘讬专讛 of one cursing 讛壮. 讗讘诇 讘讛讻讗讛 讜讚讗讬 讗讬 讗驻砖专. There's another 驻住讜拽 about a father and a mother that says that if you hit your father or mother you have to get killed. Here we don't find a 驻住讜拽 that the 转讜专讛 should compare the hitting of one's father and mother to the hitting of 讛砖诐, because it's impossible to hit 讛砖诐. But otherwise, the other things, the 转讜专讛 compares it, the father and the mother to 讛砖诐. And the 讙诪专讗 says, 讜讻谉 讘讚讬谉. It's proper, it makes sense, why the 转讜专讛 compares the father and the mother to 讛砖诐, because 砖砖诇讜砖转谉 砖讜转驻讬谉 讘讜, because all three are partners in the person. And as the 讙诪专讗 will say soon, that there are three partners in the person: the father and the mother and and 讛砖诐, so therefore, the honor that you're supposed to give your father and mother is similar to the honor you're supposed to give 讛砖诐. The fear you're supposed to have from your father and mother is similar to the fear you're supposed to have from 讛砖诐, and 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, the cursing of one's father and mother is similar to the cursing of 讛砖诐. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 砖诇讜砖讛 砖讜转驻讬谉 讛谉 讘讗讚诐, there are three partners in a person: 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, 讜讗讘讬讜, 讜讗诪讜, 讛砖诐, and his father and his mother. And as 专砖状讬 explains, as the 讙诪专讗 in 谞讬讚讛 explains it, that the father is the one that makes the white of the child, the mother is the one that gives him his red, but both of them are parts of the body, and 讛砖诐 is the one that blows the 谞砖诪讛 into him and gives him all the abilities he has: the ability to see, the ability to hear, the ability to speak, all the things a person is able to do, all that comes from the 谞砖诪讛 that 讛砖诐 puts into the person. So there are three partners in the person: the father and the mother and 讛砖诐. The 讙诪专讗 says, 讘讝诪谉 砖讗讚诐 诪讻讘讚 讗转 讗讘讬讜 讜讗转 讗诪讜, that when a person honors his father and his mother, 讗诪专 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, 讛砖诐 says, 诪注诇讛 讗谞讬 注诇讬讛诐, I consider it upon them, 讻讗讬诇讜 讚专转讬 讘讬谞讬讛诐, as if I lived amongst them, 讜讻讘讚讜谞讬, and they honored me. Since 讛砖诐 is the third partner, so when you honored the other two partners, 讛砖诐 says as if I'm there too, and you honored me too. Continuing what the 讙诪专讗 said before, that 讜砖谞谞转诐 means 砖讬讛讬讜 讚讘专讬 转讜专讛 诪讞讜讚讚讬诐 讘驻讬讱, that the words of 转讜专讛 should be sharp in your mouth, that if someone asks you something, 讗诇 转讙诪讙诐 讜转讗诪专 诇讜, that do not stammer and tell them, but tell them directly right away. So 转讜住驻讜转 asks a 拽砖讬讗, we know the 讙诪专讗 says in 讗诇讜 诪爪讬讗讜转, that there are certain things a 转诇诪讬讚 讞讻诐 is allowed to change the words, not say the complete truth, and one of the things is concerning 诪住讻转讗, concerning learning, that if they ask him about a 诪住讻转讗, so then he could change and say he didn't learn it when really he did. So it seems like a contradiction. Here it says that if they ask you, 讗诇 转讙诪讙诐 讜转讗诪专 诇讜, 讗诇讗 讗诪讜专 诇讜 诪讬讚, you have to answer right away, very clear, and there it says that you could change and say that you didn't learn it. And 转讜住驻讜转 says there is a big difference. There we're talking about a person who is asked whether he learned the 讙诪专讗 or not, so he has to be an 注谞讬讜, not a 讘注诇 讙讗讜讜讛, and say, "I didn't learn it." But here the 讙诪专讗 is talking in a case where they actually ask him a 驻砖讟, they ask him a 讛诇讻讛, or they ask him to teach them something. So here, when he does teach, when he does answer, he's supposed to answer very clear.

Torah as Medicine or Poison: Proper Intent Required

Another thing that's important to mention in the 讙诪专讗 here: the 讙诪专讗 said that 转讜专讛 is like 住诐, and it says that it is compared to 住诐 讞讬讬诐. Now the truth is the 讙诪专讗 in 讬讜诪讗 讚祝 注状讘 注诪讜讚 讘壮 says that not always is 转讜专讛 住诐 讞讬讬诐. There it says, 讝讻讛 谞注砖讬转 诇讜 住诐 讞讬讬诐, that if a person is 讝讜讻讛, then the 转讜专讛 becomes 住诐 讞讬讬诐, the medicine which gives life. But 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, the 讙诪专讗 says, 诇讗 讝讻讛, if a person is not 讝讜讻讛, then the 转讜专讛 becomes 住诐 讛诪讜转, the 转讜专讛 becomes like poison. Now what does it depend on whether the 转讜专讛 should become 住诐 讞讬讬诐 or 住诐 诪讜转, and what is 讘讻诇诇 the 驻砖讟 that the 转讜专讛 is turned into 住诐 讛诪讜转, into poison? So it says in some 讞住讬讚讬砖注 住驻专讬诐 that the 驻砖讟 is, it depends how you learn 转讜专讛. If you learn 转讜专讛 with 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐, if you learn 转讜专讛 with the proper approach, the realization that the 转讜专讛 is 转讜专讛 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, 转讜专讛 from 讛砖诐, and every word of 转讜专讛 is 讞讻诪转讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, is the 讞讻诪讛, the wisdom of 讛砖诐, then this 转讜专讛 causes the person to become in a higher 诪讚专讙讛. It purifies a person. And that's what the 讙诪专讗 means, 讝讻讛 谞注砖讬转 诇讜 住诐 讞讬讬诐. The word 讝讻讛 doesn't only mean if he is 讝讜讻讛, if he merits, but the word 讝讻讛 also comes from the word 讝讻讜转, clarification, clarity, purity, that if he learns 转讜专讛 in a way which purifies him, he learns 转讜专讛 with the proper approach, with the proper 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐, so then the 转讜专讛 becomes 住诐 讞讬讬诐, the 转讜专讛 is life to the person. But if 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐 诇讗 讝讻讛, if he studies the 转讜专讛, but not with the proper approach, he forgets that the 转讜专讛 is 讞讻诪转讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, and therefore he learns the 转讜专讛 as if it's a very nice 讞讻诪讛, so then the 转讜专讛 doesn't have the proper effect. And being that the 转讜专讛 after all is the words of 讛砖诐, but since you don't use it in the right way, then 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐 it could become 住诐 讛诪讜转, it can become like a poison, that you could utilize, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, the 转讜专讛 against 讛砖诐, that there are some people that use the 转讜专讛 诇拽谞讟专. They learn 转讜专讛, and they use the 转讜专讛 itself, that with the 转讜专讛, they go against 讛砖诐. Now, as we said before, the proper approach to the 转讜专讛 is the 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐, which means that you constant- You have to remember that the 转讜专讛 has its 拽讚讜砖讛. Not to forget that the 转讜专讛 is 转讜专讛 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, the 转讜专讛 is given by 讛砖诐, and all we're doing is we're trying to understand in our mind the words of 讛砖诐. This is really the 驻砖讟 in the 讙诪专讗 谞讚专讬诐 where it says that the, that the 讗专抓, 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 was destroyed 注诇 砖诇讗 讘专讻讜 讘转讜专讛 转讞讬诇讛, that they didn't make 讘专讻转 讛转讜专讛, that they didn't make the 讘专讻讛 before they learned 转讜专讛. And as the 转诇诪讬讚讬 专讘讬谞讜 讬讜谞讛 explain, it doesn't mean simply that they didn't make the 讘专讻讛, because why shouldn't make the 讘专讻讛? What it means is that they didn't have the 讞砖讬讘讜转 讛转讜专讛, they didn't realize the 讞砖讬讘讜转, the importance of 转讜专讛. It says that 诇诪讚讜 转讜专讛 讛专讘讛, they learned a lot of 转讜专讛, but they did not learn it with the proper approach. They didn't feel the 讞砖讬讘讜转 讛转讜专讛, the importance of 转讜专讛, which means that they knew that the 转讜专讛 is a very great 讞讻诪讛, but they didn't keep in mind that the 转讜专讛 is the 讞讻诪转讜 砖诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗, the wisdom of 讛砖诐. Truth is, this is mentioned in the 讙诪专讗 砖讘转 讚祝 诇"讗. There it says that the 转讜专讛 must have a 讛拽讚诪讛, an introduction of 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐. And the 讙诪专讗 says there that if a person learns 转讜专讛 and doesn't have the proper 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐, which means that he doesn't look at the 转讜专讛 the proper way, so then it's a 诪砖诇 as if a person who has keys to the rooms of the inside and doesn't have keys to the outer rooms. So what good are the keys to the inner rooms when he can't get there because he has no keys to the outer room? So too, if a person doesn't have 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐, then so to speak, it's as if the whole learning of the 转讜专讛 is not worth it. And as we said before, the 转讜专讛 could, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, turn into 住诐 讛诪讜讜转, into poison. And 住驻专讬诐 say that there is a 专诪讝 to this idea that when you start learning 转讜专讛 you must have the introduction before is from the fact that the 转讜专讛 starts with a 讘. And the

Why Torah Begins with Bet Instead of Aleph

famous 拽砖讬讗, why does the 转讜专讛 start with a 讘, not with an 讗? Since 讗诇祝 讘讬转 starts with an 讗. So the first word of 转讜专讛 should have started with the first letter of the 讗诇祝 讘讬转. As we see that the 注砖专转 讛讚讬讘专讜转 do start with an 讗. But nevertheless, the 转讜专讛 starts with the word 讘专讗砖讬转, with a 讘. And the answer that is given is because 讘 means number two. It's to teach us that when we sit down actually to learn 转讜专讛, this is already the second step. The first step is the 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐 you're supposed to have. The 讗 before you start learning 转讜专讛, that is the 讬专讗转 砖诪讬诐 that you're supposed to have before you even start. Then when you actually sit down to learn 转讜专讛, there you come to the 讘, that is already the second step. And some say that this is 诪专讜诪讝 in the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬. In 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 it says that why does the 转讜专讛 start with a 讘, not with an 讗? Because 讗 is a 专讗砖讬 转讬讘讜转, the abbreviation of the word 讗专讜专, cursed, while 讘 is an abbreviation of the word 讘专讜讱, of the word blessed. But some ask, and the truth is that really there are words which are good words and they start with an 讗, and there are, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, words that could mean something not so good and it could start with a 讘. Why does the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 say that because there is an abbreviation 讗专讜专 from the word, letter 讗, therefore the 转讜专讛 could not start with an 讗? And some say that the 驻砖讟 in the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 is that not that really the word starts with 讗专讜专, that is not the whole meaning of the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬. The 驻砖讟 is that if you would start with an 讗, that means that a person would feel that learning 转讜专讛 is the first step and there is nothing that comes before that, then this, 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, could be turned into an 讗专讜专. As the 讙诪专讗 says: 诇讗 讝讻讛, 谞注砖讬转 诇讜 住诐 诪讜转. While if it starts with a 讘, that means that you realize that the learning of the 转讜专讛 is really the 讘, the second step, then you could get the 讘专讜讱, you would get the 讘专讻讛.
