Parshat Parah: Part 2
Why the ashes of the Parah Adumah must be kept ready for every single Jew at all times, even those who will never need purification from tumat met.
Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Adar · 16:50
Explores the Yerushalmi's description of Parah Adumah as 'taharatan shel kol Yisrael', purification belonging to every Jew, even though most people are never obligated to purify themselves from tumat met, and the Rambam's chiddush that the ashes must lechatchilah be kept ready for anyone who might need them. Develops the idea, rooted in the principle that every physical halachah reflects a spiritual counterpart, that Parah Adumah represents teshuvah, since tumat met parallels the spiritual death caused by aveirot tracing back to the Cheit HaEgel. Concludes that because no person, however righteous, is ever completely free of teshuvah, the mitzvah's ashes and by extension Shabbat Parshat Parah itself become a zman mesugal when teshuvah is accepted most readily.

Concerning 驻专砖转 驻专讛, it says in Yerushalmi Megillah 驻专拽 讙 讛诇讻讛 讛, as Rashi and the Rif in Megillah 讚祝 讻状讟 注诪讜讚 讗 bring it down, that 讘讚讬谉 讛讜讗 砖转拽讚讬诐 讛讞讜讚砖 诇驻专讛, that 讘讗诪转, 驻专砖转 讛讞讜讚砖 should come before 驻专砖转 驻专讛, 砖讘讗讞讚 讘谞讬住谉 讛讜拽诐 讛诪砖讻谉 讜讘砖谞讬 谞砖专驻讛 讛驻专讛, because the Mishkan was put up on the first day of Nissan, and the second day of Nissan, they made the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛. 讜诇诪讛 驻专讛 拽讜讚诪转, why does 驻专讛 come first? 砖讛讬讗 讟讛专转谉 砖诇 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, because that is the taharah of all the Yidden. 驻专讛, 驻专砖转 驻专讛 deals with the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, which is used to be 诪讟讛专, to purify a person who became 讟诪讗 from a 诪转. So because this is the taharah of all the Yidden, and since the Yidden have to bring the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, they have to be 讟讛讜专, so therefore, we first read 驻专砖转 驻专讛, and then we read 驻专砖转 讛讞讜讚砖, because in 驻专砖转 讛讞讜讚砖 we learn about the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, and in order to be able to bring the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, you have to first be 讟讛讜专, therefore 驻专砖转 驻专讛 comes first. From the lashon of Yerushalmi, where it says that this is 讟讛专转谉 砖诇 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, this is the taharah of all the Yidden, it comes out that the taharah of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is important for all the Yidden. And even if we're not 讙讜专住 in the Yerushalmi the 诇砖讜谉 砖讛讬讗 讟讛专转谉 砖诇 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, that this is the taharah of all the Yidden, as the girsa of the Rif and Rashi, that when they quote the Yerushalmi, they don't use the 诇砖讜谉 砖诇 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, they just say that this is the taharah of Yisrael, but still, we see that the inyan of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is shayach to all the Yidden, because we see that this din that you have to read 驻专砖转 驻专讛 is a takanah for all the Yidden. We don't say that some Yidden, only those who are tamei, have to read 驻专砖转 驻专讛, but every single Yid has the obligation of the kriyah of 驻专砖转 驻专讛. So obviously, 驻专砖转 驻专讛 is noge'a to all the Yidden. But l'chorah, we have to understand: why is it important to all the Yidden? This that you have to become tahor from 讟讜诪讗转 诪转 before you bring the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞 is only important for those people who are 讟诪讗讬 诪转, those people who are tamei, but not to all the Yidden. The contrary, if all the Yidden or the majority of the Yidden would be 讟诪讗讬 诪转, you wouldn't need a 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 at all. You wouldn't need a taharah, because the din is that 讟讜诪讗讛 讛讜转专讛 讘爪讬讘讜专. When it comes to a korban that's important for the community, like the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, if the majority of the people are tamei, you could bring it 讘讟讜诪讗讛. So then it comes out that when do you need a 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛? Only if most of the people are not tamei. So why is it that we say that the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is 讟讛专转谉 砖诇 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, the taharah of all the Yidden? And even if we don't have that girsa, but every Yid is 诪讞讜讬讬讘 in the 拽专讬讗讛 of 驻专砖转 驻专讛, even though this concept of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 to clean from 讟讜诪讗转 诪转 is not 谞讜讙注 to every Yid. So we must say that there is something in the 注谞讬谉 of 驻专讛, at least in the spiritual explanation of what the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is, which is 谞讜讙注 to every single Yid at all times in all situations. To understand that, we first have to bring that there is a special din concerning the mitzvah of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛.
The Rambam says in Sefer HaMitzvot, 诪爪讜转 注砖讛 拽讬状讙, that the mitzvah of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is 诇注砖讜转 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, you have to make the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, 讻讚讬 砖讬讛讬讛 讗驻专讛 诪讝讜诪谉, in order for its ashes should be ready, 诇诪讬 砖讬爪讟专讱 讗诇讬讜, for somebody who will need it, 诇讟讛专转 讟讜诪讗转 诪转, to the taharah of 讟讜诪讗转 诪转. And also in the Chinuch, 诪爪讜讛 砖爪状讝, he writes 诇砖专讜祝 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, the mitzvah is to burn a 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, 诇讛讬讜转 讗驻专讛 诪讜讻谉 诇诪讬 砖讬爪讟专讱 讗诇讬讛, so the ashes should be ready for the one that will need it, 讜诪讟讛专讜 诪讟讜诪讗转 诪转, to clean him from 讟讜诪讗转 诪转. And in the 诪谞讬谉 讛诪爪讜转 that Rambam writes in the beginning of his Sefer HaYad, he also writes 诇注砖讜转 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 诇讛讬讜转 讗驻专讛 诪讜讻谉, that the 讗驻专, the ashes should be ready. Which means that the 转讻诇讬转 of the mitzvah is not only in using the ashes of the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 when you need it, when a person is 讟诪讗 诪转 and he has to become tahor, but that 讗驻专 讛驻专讛 has to lechatchilah be ready for every single person whenever he will need it. That at any time when a Yid will need the taharah of 讟讜诪讗转 诪转, he should right away be able to be metaher himself. And the Rambam brings the pasuk where it says 讜讛讬转讛 诇注讚转 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇 诇诪砖诪专转. And the simple peshat in this pasuk is that the 讗驻专 驻专讛 has to be 诪砖讜诪专, has to be ready for every single Yid of 注讚转 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, from all the Yidden. Maybe a Yid will need the 讗驻专 驻专讛 to be metaher himself. And this is a very big chiddush, because be'emet, there is no din in the Torah that a person who is 讟诪讗 诪转 has to become tahor. Even before Yom Tov, when there is a din, a 讞讬讜讘 诇讟讛专 讗转 注爪诪讜 讘专讙诇, as the Gemara says in Rosh Hashanah. So first of all, there's a whole discussion in the Mishneh LaMelech on the Rambam and in other places whether this is a 讚讬谉 诪讚讗讜专讬讬转讗 or mid'rabbanan. Could be that mid'oraita, he doesn't even have to become tahor on Yom Tov. And even if we hold that mid'oraita you do have to become tahor before Yom Tov. This is only if somebody is going to be 注讜诇讛 专讙诇. This is only 讞诇, this obligation is only on a person who is obligated to go up to Yerushalayim on Yom Tov. But those people who are not obligated, for instance a person who doesn't own property in Eretz Yisrael, or a person who lives in chutz la'aretz, and other people who are patur from 注诇讬讬讛 诇专讙诇, and therefore they are patur also from the korban Pesach, they are not 诪讞讜讬讬讘 诇讟讛专 注爪诪谉 讘专讙诇, they have no obligation to make themselves tahor on Yom Tov. So it comes out that for most people there is no chiyuv of becoming tahor. And still this inyan of having the 讗驻专 驻专讛 ready applies to every single Yid. It applies to every single Yid from 注讚转 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, as the pasuk says 讜讛讬转讛 诇注讚转 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇 诇诪砖诪专转. So we have to understand why is it so important concerning the 讗驻专 驻专讛 that we stress that it's not enough that the 讗驻专 驻专讛 is around when you will need it, but part of the din in 讗驻专 驻专讛 is that lechatchilah it has to be put away in such a way that it should always be ready for whoever needs it. Even though most people won't even need it, nevertheless we say it has to be ready for everybody. So obviously there is something in the inyan of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 which is important to everybody.
Now we know that everything that we have in gashmiyut is nishtalshel from ruchniyut, comes as a result from the way the same thing is in the spiritual sense. And the truth is, this is really the meaning of what the Chazal say in Bereishit Rabbah in the beginning and is also brought down in the Zohar 讞诇拽 讘壮 拽住状讗 注诪讜讚 讗壮 and 注诪讜讚 讘壮, that 讗住转讻诇 讘讗讜专讬讬转讗 讜讘专讗 注诇诪讗. Hashem looked into the Torah and created the world. And as it says that the Torah was the blueprint of the creation of the world. So it comes out that you have the world the way you actually have it, but then you have the world the way it's in the Torah. And definitely the world the way it's in the Torah is in ruchniyut. So it comes out that everything that we have in the world in gashmiyut definitely has a source in ruchniyut. Now if it is so concerning inyanim of the world, certainly it is concerning inyanim of Torah u'mitzvot. That all the inyanim that we have in a mitzvah the way it's begashmiyut certainly fits to the way that inyan is in that same mitzvah beruchniyut. And the same will be in our inyan. This that we say that the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, the mitzvah is that it has to be 诪讝讜诪谉 诇诪讬 砖诪爪讟专讱 讗诇讬讜, it always has to be ready lechatchilah for everybody, comes because in ruchniyut, in avodah ruchniyut, what the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 represents in ruchniyut, it has to always be there. This is something that has to be ready for every single person. And therefore, in gashmiyut the halachah is that the 讗驻专 驻专讛 has to always be ready. What is the inyan of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 in ruchniyut?
So we know, as it says in sefarim, that the inyan of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 represents the inyan of teshuvah. Because 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 cleanses a person from 讟讜诪讗转 诪转, from becoming tamei through a dead body. What is 讟讜诪讗转 诪转 in ruchniyut? It is the inyan of aveirot. Because it says 注讜谞讜转讬讻诐 讛讬讜 诪讘讚讬诇讬诐, 驻住讜拽 says in Isaiah 拽驻讬讟诇 谞状讟 驻住讜拽 讘壮, that the aveirot separate between the Yid and Hashem. When you are separated from Hashem, then automatically you don't have life. That means, as it says in Avot d'Rabbi Natan at the end of 驻专拽 诇状讚, that when a Yid is 讚讘讜拽 讘讛砖诐, when the Yid is connected to Hashem, then 讞讬讬诐 讻讜诇讻诐 讛讬讜诐, then they are alive. But when a Yid is not connected to Hashem, he's separated from Hashem, then he doesn't have the inyan of chayim, and he doesn't have the inyan of life. Therefore it says that 专砖注讬诐 讗驻讬诇讜 讘讞讬讬讛诐 拽专讜讬讬诐 诪转讬诐. 专砖注讬诐, even while they're alive, they're called dead. Because they're not connected to Hashem, so they have no life. Now since aveirot are mavdilim, aveirot separate between the Yid and Hashem, so aveirot bring the inyan of death. So when we say a person becomes 讟诪讗 诪转, his 讟讜诪讗讛 comes as a result of death, this shows that he is a 讘注诇 注讘讬专讛, this is the concept of aveirot in 专讜讞谞讬讜转. 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, which cleanses the person from 讟讜诪讗转 诪转, is the inyan of teshuvah. That just like we know teshuvah brings the person back, that he connects himself again to Hashem, takes away the concept of 诪讬转讛 from the person, so the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, which cleanses the person from 讟讜诪讗转 诪转, is the inyan of teshuvah. Which is really 诪专讜诪讝 in the 诪讗诪专 讞讝状诇 in Tanchuma 讞拽转 讞壮, brought down in Rashi in 驻专砖转 讞拽转 拽驻讬讟诇 讬状讟 驻住讜拽 讻状讘, that 转讘讗 驻专讛 讜转讻驻专 注诇 诪注砖讛 讛注讙诇. That the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is a 讻驻专讛 for the 注讘讬专讛 of 注讙诇. Now we know that the 讞讟讗 讛注讙诇 is the source of all aveirot. Because it says that the source of all aveirot came from the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转. But then by 诪转谉 转讜专讛 the 讟讜诪讗讛 that came to the world through the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转 went away, as the Gemara says in Shabbos. But then when they sinned with the 注讙诇, it came back. So obviously the 注讙诇 is the source of all aveirot, and that's why it says 讜讘讬讜诐 驻拽讚讬 讜驻拽讚转讬. Hashem says that there is no punishment for any aveirah that doesn't also include in the punishment for the 讞讟讗 讛注讙诇, because every aveirah comes as a result of the 讞讟讗 讛注讙诇. And here we say that the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is a kaparah for the 讞讟讗 讛注讙诇, so really the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is a kaparah for all aveirot, which means that 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is similar to the inyan of teshuvah. And that is why in 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 we find two opposite extremes: on one hand, the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 was done outside, out of the three machanot, as it says in Rashi in 驻专砖转 讞拽转 拽驻讬讟诇 讬状讟 驻住讜拽 讙壮, taken from the Gemara in Yoma 讚祝 住状讞 注诪讜讚 讗壮, not like other korbanot which had to be done in 驻谞讬诐, inside the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖; on the other hand, it says there that when they sprinkle the blood of the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, it had to be 谞讜讻讞 驻谞讬 讗讛诇 诪讜注讚, had to be across the opening of the 讗讛诇 诪讜注讚. As the Gemara says there: 诪转讻讜讬谉 讜专讜讗讛 驻转讞讜 砖诇 讛讬讻诇 讘砖注转 讛讝讗转 讛讚诐. You have to be mechaven and you have to see the door of the 讛讬讻诇 at the time of the sprinkling of the blood. Why is it? Because since 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 represents teshuvah, teshuvah takes care, wipes out, what you did outside of kedushah. Teshuvah is to wipe out the aveirot. Now, the aveirot, anything that you do which is wrong is considered chutz, it's outside of the machaneh of kedushah, of the camp of kedushah. And therefore, when you have to wipe out the aveirot, you have to go to that place outside of the 诪讞谞讛 讚拽讚讜砖讛 and wipe it out. That's why the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 was done 讞讜抓 诇讙壮 诪讞谞讜转. But at the same time, since this is the koach of teshuvah, in order to be able to wipe out the aveirot, you have to have a very, very strong koach from a very high level, therefore it came from the madreigah of 驻谞讬 讗讛诇 诪讜注讚, 驻谞讬 means 驻谞讬诐, inside, the inner part, the very high madreigah. Now that we know the inyan of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, the 注谞讬谉 of teshuva, a person might think that this 注谞讬谉 in 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, which is teshuva, is only for somebody who sinned. He has to have the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 which is done outside in order to forgive for his aveirot. But when a person feels that he never sinned, as the pasuk says in Kohelet 拽驻讬讟诇 讝壮 驻住讜拽 讻状讟, that 注砖讛 讗诇拽讬诐 讗转 讛讗讚诐 讬砖专, 讛砖诐 made a person straight, so a person who follows that straight path, he doesn't 诇讻讗讜专讛 need the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, which is teshuva, to wipe out the 讞讜抓, the outside, to wipe out the aveirot. That's why we say that the 注谞讬谉 of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, part of the mitzvah of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 was that 砖讬讛讬讛 讗驻专讛 诪讝讜诪谉 诇诪砖诪专转. The ashes always has to be ready for anybody who needs it, and as we explained before, it has to be ready for everybody. This tells us that this 注谞讬谉 of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, which is the 注谞讬谉 of teshuva, has to be by everybody. There is no person who is 驻讟讜专 from the 注谞讬谉 of teshuva. And in simple pshat, it is because, as the Mishnah says in Pirkei Avot, 驻专拽 讘壮 诪砖谞讛 讚壮: 讗诇 转讗诪谉 讘注爪诪讱, never believe yourself. A person is never sure with himself that he's not going to be 注讜讘专 注讘讬专讜转. Especially the pasuk says in Kohelet 拽驻讬讟诇 讝壮 驻住讜拽 讻壮: 讗讬谉 爪讚讬拽 讘讗专抓 讗砖专 讬注砖讛 讟讜讘 讜诇讗 讬讞讟讗. There is no 爪讚讬拽 in the world that could only do good and not sin. And even though there are 爪讚讬拽讬诐 who never sinned, still, when the pasuk says 状诇讗 讬讞讟讗状, means not only sinning, 讻驻讜注诇 讻驻砖讜讟讜, in the simple pshat, 讬讞讟讗 also comes from the word 讞住专讜谉, the word 讞讟讗 could mean 讞住专讜谉. There is nobody who we could say fulfilled everything that he's supposed to and didn't have any any 讞住专讜谉 at all. So he also has to do teshuva. And that is the reason why the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, the 讗驻专 驻专讛, always has to be ready for everybody, because every person needs teshuvah. And even those people who the Gemara says 诪转讜 讘注讟讬讜 砖诇 谞讞砖, as the Gemara says in 砖讘转 讚祝 谞状讛 注诪讜讚 讘壮 and in 讘讘讗 讘转专讗 讚祝 讬状讝 注诪讜讚 讗壮, they had no 注讘讬专讜转 whatsoever, there was nothing wrong with them, they only died 讘注讟讬讜 砖诇 谞讞砖, which means because of the 谞讞砖 讛拽讚诪讜谞讬, because of the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转, so still, they also need the 注谞讬谉 of teshuvah, because after all, since they did die because of the 注抓 讛讚注转, so the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转 affected them also. Now, since it affected them, there's something within them that they have to get rid of, and therefore they also need the 注谞讬谉 of teshuvah. So every person needs the 注谞讬谉 of teshuvah, and that's why the 讗驻专 驻专讛 has to be ready for everybody, always. Certainly, when a person will start thinking about what it says in 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 讬讜诪讗 驻专拽 讗壮 讛诇讻讛 讗壮 and brought in the 诪讚专砖 转讛诇讬诐 拽驻讬讟诇 拽诇状讝 驻住讜拽 讝壮, that 讻诇 讚讜专 砖讗讬谞讜 谞讘谞讛 讘讬诪讬讜 诪注诇讬谉 注诇讬讜 讻讗讬诇讜 讛讞专讬讘讜, any generation that the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was not built in his time, is as if he destroyed the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖. So it comes out that every person, in all generations that there is no 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, has to feel as if in his time it was destroyed. Now why was it destroyed? Obviously it's up to him, because we know that every person's mitzvot counts, and as the Rambam says, when a person does one 诪爪讜讛, 讛讻专讬注 讗转 注爪诪讜 讜讗转 讻诇 讛注讜诇诐 讻讜诇讜 诇讻祝 讝讻讜转, he tips the scale for the good for himself and for the whole world, 讜讙专诐 诇讜 讜诇讛诐 转砖讜注讛 讜讛爪诇讛, and he brings a 转砖讜注讛, a help, and a redemption for everybody. Since in his time there was no redemption yet, obviously it is his fault. So therefore, when you look around and you see that you're still in galut, and especially such a terrible galut, a 讞讜砖讱 讻驻讜诇 讜诪讻讜驻诇, a galut which is dark and a triple and double and triple darkness, in 注拽讘转讗 讚诪砖讬讞讗, you are at a time when it's really 讞讜抓, outside of the levels of 拽讚讜砖讛, and Mashiach still didn't come yet. So obviously it depends on you. You could have done more and then Mashiach would have come. Since you didn't, it is as if in your time it was destroyed, and you are at fault. Now, if So, certainly you have to have teshuvah. And this is the 专诪讝 that we're supposed to take out from this mitzvah of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, and from this 讚讬谉 that a 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is always supposed to be ready for everybody. And this that the 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 says that it's 讟讛专转谉 砖诇 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, of all the Yidden, and it's taken from the pasuk, it says 诇诪砖诪专转 for the 注讚转 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, for the whole community of 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇, is because the inyan of teshuvah is something that belongs to everybody. And the truth is there are many people that don't have to come onto all these cheshbonot and calculations, that the reason he has to do teshuvah is because the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 was not built yet and all the other expressions that we said before. But many people pashut have to do teshuvah because if they look into their own actions and they make a cheshbon hanefesh, they will see that there are many things that they did which are wrong, that need teshuvah.
So when it comes to the time of 驻专砖转 驻专讛, when we read in the Torah the parashah of 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, and we know that whenever we learn in the Torah a din of a certain thing, it's as if we did that thing. When we learn about a certain korban, it's as if we brought that korban. So when we learn and we read in the Torah about 驻专砖转 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛, it's as if we are bringing the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛. So then we have the special koach of accomplishing what the 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛 is supposed to accomplish. And that is the inyan of teshuvah. Which means that this is also a time when a person is able to be mit'orer bitshuvah. And since this is a din given by Hashem that you have to read 驻专砖转 驻专讛 at that time, so Hashem gives special koachot to every Yid to be able to accomplish what he's supposed to accomplish for 驻专讛 讗讚讜诪讛. Which means that during the 砖讘转 驻专砖转 驻专讛, that it is a special zman mesugal to be mit'orer in teshuvah and to do teshuvah, and the teshuvah will be accepted fastest. Similar to what it says in the Rambam concerning 注砖专转 讬诪讬 转砖讜讘讛, that even though all year round teshuvah is good and important and you must do it, but during that time it is 讬驻讛 讘讬讜转专 讜诪转拽讘诇转 诪讬讚, that is better and it's accepted faster, so too we can say concerning 驻专砖转 驻专讛, that even though always teshuvah is important and you need it, but on 驻专砖转 驻专讛 it's 讬驻讛 讘讬讜转专, it's better, and 诪转拽讘诇转 诪讬讚, it's accepted right away.
