all right, so the Shaar Efraim writes to him, what's, what are you talking about? It's a mitzvah to help him if they did something. Yeah, that part is good, I'm saying. This, I like this, well, this teshuvah. But the other one You don't like that? Maybe you can view it. Not talking about Yeah, my davenen, yeah. You're not going to get him not talking about davenen. Just talk about it, I mean, come on. But maybe convince them to irgendwo elsewhere. Much easier to convince emet. Avek. I don't see it. You don't see it? Okay, look, we're holding here ס״ב. You know, he was the first president of the Yeah, yeah. He came to the Rebbe also, more or less. He came to the Rebbe also. It doesn't say there, well, I know. Yeah, he doesn't understand. He know, he doesn't understand. Okay. No, he did understand, you see in the תשובות, Mizrachi this year. Okay, anyway,
אלעזר איש ברתותא, כד הוה חזי לגבאי צדקה, אלעזר איש ברתותא was a great צדיק. So if a גבאי צדקה, collector of צדקה would see him, טשמיניה, would hide from him, wouldn't want he should see him, because דכל דהוה נקט הוה יהיב ליה, because whatever he had he would give away. They didn't want to take, they didn't want, but there's no choice, so they tried to hide that he shouldn't see them. יומא חד סליק לשוקא למיזבן נדוניא לברתיה, once he went into the market, the street, to the market to buy things for his daughter's חתונה. חזיוהו גבאי צדקה, so a גבאי צדקה saw, saw him. טשמיניה, two, a few גבאי צדקה's. טשמיניה, they hid from him. They hid from him so he shouldn't see them. אזל, he went, ורהט בתרייהו, he noticed them, so he chased them. אמר להו, and he said to them, אשבעתיכו, I'm making you swear, במה עסקיתו? What were you, what are you involved in? אמרו ליה, so they had no choice to tell him, בנדוניא דיתום ויתומה. We're collecting money to marry off a יתום and a יתומה, orphan and, and what's a girl orphan? Orphan. An orphaness. Orphaness, is it? No, don't. Orphan girl. Orphan boy and orphan girl, so you know, you're not supposed to give more than one-fifth. What's, isn't that הלכה? Whatever he had with him, could be he had in the house more. No, the הלכה is, I'm just saying, you can't give more than one-fifth. The whole point is he ran away because he was giving everything away, yeah, everything. So, isn't it? In תניא he says you're allowed to, no? Did he need He didn't need, he didn't need to. Well, he felt he thought he did. We know he didn't, he's such a צדיק, he didn't need to do תשובה, but he himself didn't feel that way. אמר להו, so when they said that we're collecting for a חתונה of a יתום and a יתומה, he said to them, העבודה, which is I swear, שהן קודמין לבתי, they come before my daughter. שקל כל מה דהוה ליה, he
took everything he had, יהבינהו להו, he gave it to them. פש גביה חד זוזא, he left one coin, one zuz. אזל, he went, huh? On purpose? I guess not to give not to be give everything away. Buy lottery. Huh? Well, almost. אזל, he went, זבן ביה חיטי, he bought some wheat. ואסיק, and he came, ושדייה באחלוותא, and he came to the house and took whatever he bought, took it into the storage, threw into storage. How much could you buy for one zuz? אתאי דביתהו, his wife came home. אמרה לה לברתה, she said to her daughter, מאי אייתי לך אבוך? Your father went to shop for you, for the chatunah, and what did he buy, what did he bring? אמרה לה, she said to her mother, כל מה דאייתי לאחלוותא שדייה. I don't know, I saw he brought something, whatever he brought, he threw it into that that that otzer, storage. סליקא אתיא למיפתח בבא דאחלוותא, she went and wanted to open the door of that storage. חזת, she saw, אחלוותא דמליא חיטי, that storage room was full of wheat. He bought a little wheat and a nes happened, and the whole thing came full of wheat. דקא נפקא בצינורא דדשא, and some of it was sticking out under the door, ולא מפתח בבא מחיטי, you couldn't even open the door, it was so stuck, so packed it was with chiti. כי אתא מבי מדרשא, they knew he didn't buy so much wheat, I mean, so they knew it was a nes, so when he came from the בית מדרש, אמרה ליה, his wife says to him, חזי מה עשה לך אוהבך! Look what your friend did to you! Oibershter, your Friend, look what He did to you! אמר לה, so he said, העבודה, I swear, הרי הם הקדש עליך. Wait, who who who did who to what to who? She said to him that look what your friend, Hashem, did to you, He made this nes. So she he said, I swear that it should be הקדש on you, ואין לך בהן אלא כאחד מעניי ישראל, it's הקדש, and it's for the poor people. You could take like any first person could take, but don't take any more. Didn't want to benefit from the nes. There's other stories that tzadikim also that different things happened with nes and they didn't want to, didn't want to have hana'ah. But is it, is it דוקא, not because they made it הקדש, it is הקדש, isn't it? Wasn't it? I don't know. Hashem made it, it's a miracle, totally. You shouldn't have hana'ah from מעשה ניסים? What does the Oibershter do it for if you're not supposed to have hana'ah for it? No, to save you, but not to live off a nes, by a nes. Something He got a lot of money that I mean, it's not a issur in halacha, it says you shouldn't, so he didn't want to have hana'ah. But there are other stories, I mean, from tzadikim, from The Eibershter gave it to him, why shouldn't he take what the Eibershter gave? He didn't want to detract from his They looked at it, they looked for at it as a nisayon. The Eibershter wanted to see how you're going to behave. I have famous stories, the Maggid story, the other stories the golden leg of the table? That one he asked Well, that's the story here in the Gemara. That's, that one he asked for the golden table leg. Yeah. So that one, okay, then he had to, he had to try to he wanted to give it back. But this one he didn't ask for it. So? But his Okay. What about his עולם הבא? How does that על פי דין, you could have hana'ah. It's not a issur. How does it affect his עולם הבא? His life's His concern is that if he benefits from the nes, it will affect his עולם הבא. I mean, they're always concerned about The other reason is, because if they, if you, if you gain from a nes, then they must, they deduct from your zechuyot. From your zechuyot, yeah. Yeah, it's deducted. Deduct from his zechut. That's why you should never go under a thing like maybe they'll make a nes. And even if they make a nes, first of all, they might, but if they make a nes, it will be deducting you. So the zechut of Right, so the zechut of the, the tzedakah that he gave, he wanted to keep that zechut and not use it up for anything and then he should have עולם הבא. Yeah. Uh? Any nes for money today? I mean. So, now, Not to save you. Well, you should have gotten it back in the start. And, also, when you have to have a nes, there is no problem, when you have to. Talking like the Gemara said before, you're not allowed to walk under a ladder that's that's But what happens if a person walk has to go to a place and there is no other choice? So, you either might be a nes Same thing, but when there has to be a nes, it has to be a nes. Otherwise, why does the Eibershter make nissim for? But if it doesn't have to be, and you want to have hana'ah from it, you should remember they take away from your zechuyot. So, he gave away from tzedakah, he has even a a more a more zechut. The nisayon, the fact that he passed that test. Absolutely. Right. זאגט די Gemara weiter, רבי יהודה נשיאה
גזר תענית. Rabbi Yehuda Nesi'ah, not Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi. Yehuda Nesi'ah. He was an amora. He was years later. Why was he called Nesi'ah? Because he was also Nasi, but he's not Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi. גזר תענית. Made a taanis. Why? There was no rain. Made a taanis. Was a grandson? Was a great-grand. A great-grandson? Yeah, a few, it's a few generations. בעי רחמי, so he davened. ולא אתא מיטרא, didn't rain. אמר, he said, כמה נפיש בין שמואל הרמתי ליהודה בן גמליאל. Look at the difference between Shmuel Hanavi and me. He was Yehuda ben, his father was called Gamliel. Look at the difference. What did we find by Shmuel Hanavi? Shmuel Hanavi says that was, he spoke to the Yidden, it was the middle of the summer in Eretz Yisrael. It's It never rains in the summer. And he said, hey, I want the Aibershter to show a nes. Then all of a sudden it start thundering and lightning, and start raining. All he did was said a word. And I, I'm davening, and asking the Aibershter, and he doesn't give rain. And it's not He didn't ask for rain in the summertime, when it's not a time of rain. He asked for rain when there should have been rain. And it doesn't work. אוי לדור שכך עלתה בימיו. Woe be to a generation that's that's here. אוי למי שכך Uh? Stuck Stuck on this. אוי למי שכך עלתה בימיו. Woe be to a person that in his time should happen something like this. חלש דעתיה, so he felt bad, ואתא מיטרא. It rained. In other words, the fact that he felt very bad, that itself, that's like a hachna'ah, and shiflut, that's the zechut that brought rain.
דבי נשיאה גזור תעניתא. In one place, by the, the Nasi of the place made a taanis. ולא אודעינהו לרבי יוחנן ולריש לקיש. They didn't tell Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish the day before. בצפרא, in the morning, אודעינהו, they were notified. אמר ליה ריש לקיש לרבי יוחנן, ריש לקיש said to רבי יוחנן, הא לא קבלינן עלן מאורתא. You have to accept a a taanis from the day before, and we didn't know, so we didn't accept it. אמר ליה, so he said, אנן בתרייהו גרירינן. We're schlepped after the Nasi. If the Nasi makes it, whether we are mekabel or not, we are mechuyav to fast, and it has a din of a taanis. It's not that we are mechuyav or not. If you do fast, does it have a din of a taanis? There is a difference between fasting and, uh, and dieting. So the vort is, if you mekabel, it has a דין תענית. If not, it doesn't have a דין תענית. He says, \"No, it does have a דין תענית.\" Probably didn't eat this morning. Uh? They're lucky they didn't eat anything. Yeah, they probably didn't eat before davening. Yeah. They came to shul, and they found out. By us, we don't have to mekabel for It could could be the same by us, yeah? If I walk walk into shul, I I forget it's a fast day? תענית צבור, you never have to mekabel. A regular, set תענית צבור. Now, this is also a תענית צבור, but it was made for a special time. That you have to mekabel. But if it's a תענית צבור of the of תעניתים that Yeah, that that's on the matter. It's a she'eilah by a chatan. On a chatan, the day of his chatunah, does he have to mekabel or not? Who? That's a she'eilahs. Some say he doesn't, because it's a minhag. So the minhag itself Yeah. is the kabbalah. And some say he should be mekabel. It's also it's a different type of taanis, because the minhag is that if you have the chupah middle of the day You break your fast. You break your fast, so it's not like a regular זה חיוב. זה חיוב? By Ashkenazim it's a chiyuv, Sephardim don't fast. Ashkenazim it's a chiyuv. And how do we look at it? We're Ashkenazim. Okay. Sometimes we're different. Not for now. A shtikel a shtikel Sephardi, he says. Yeah. We don't follow everything Ashkenaz, davka Ashkenaz. A lot of minhagim Chabad Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They are close to Sephardim, though. They don't come from Sephardim, but they are close. Yeah, yeah, both. I didn't say they come from Sephardim. No. But a lot of minhagim in Chabad are very close to minhagim of the Sephardim. Told you when I once spoke to this rabbi, Tzion Levy, in Panama, and I told him that he was a real Sephardi, but he is a real kanai Sephardi, a real patriot for the Sephardim. So I was speaking to him and I said that amongst the Ashkenazim the closest to Sephardim in minhagim and this is Lubavitch. It's true. Yeah? Yeah. So he says, לדוגמה? So I said למשל, on Rosh Chodesh the Sephardim don't make a bracha for Hallel. They don't? Right. And every don't say whole Hallel they don't make a bracha. And by us, only the chazan makes, and most people don't make a bracha. So he looks at me and says, מה הוא החזן, הוא גוי? Anyway, דבי נשיאה גזור תעניתא. Also by the Nasi they made a taanis. ולא אתא מיטרא. Still didn't come, the rain didn't come. תנא להו ישעיה, ישעיה זעירא דמן חברייא. Yeshaya was the younger one, because it must have been there was senior and junior, this is junior Yeshaya. He quoted a pasuk where it says והיה אם מעיני העדה נעשתה לשגגה. Says if from the eyes of the community there's a mistake made. Who are the eyes of the community? The leaders. That means that if the leaders make a mistake and leaders are no good, that's why the people are no good and that's why things are no good. And he gave a mashal. A mashal of kallah: כל זמן שעיניה יפות, if her eyes are nice, אין כל גופה צריך בדיקה. You don't have to check the rest, because you know she's nice. וכל זמן שאין עיניה יפות, if her eyes are not nice, then you know כל גופה צריך בדיקה, you have to check the rest of the body because she's not nice. Same thing he said, that why didn't the Aibershter answer? Because the Nasi's house is no good. They're the עיני העדה, and they're no good. They're no good, everyone is no good, umeila they don't deserve to get helped. אתו עבדי, came the servants of the נשיא, ורמו ליה אצואריה סודרא, they put They started choking him, they put a sudar, a handkerchief around his neck. וקא מצערו ליה. They started beating him up, they started making him tzaros. אמרו להו בני מתא, the people of the city said, שבקוה. Let go, don't do anything to him. Why? דהא נמי מצערא לן. He made us also He just like he spoke against your your group, he always gives us mussar, he always zaytlt undz oys, he always insults us. דכי חזינן, so we always would do the same thing, דכי חזינן דכל מילי לשם שמים עביד, when we realize that whatever he does, even though he's very harsh, whatever he does is לשם שמים, לא אמרינן ליה ולא מידי. We don't bother him, ושבקינן ליה, we leave him. And therefore אתון נמי שבקוה, don't bother him either, leave him, because he means l'shem Shamayim. Who came to choke him? The servants of the Nasi's house. Family members or servants? No, servants, not family. The servants, when they heard that someone spoke against their master, got very upset and they started beating him up. So they said to him, leave him, leave him, er meint er meint l'shem Shamayim, er meint good. רבי גזר תעניתא, רבי made a ta'anis. ולא אתא מיטרא. Didn't rain. נחית קמיה אילפא, so Ilfa went to the amud to daven, ואמרי לה, some say, Rabbi Ilfa, must have been two people, one was called Ilfa and one was called Rabbi Ilfa, so it's a she'eilah. אמר, when he said as חזרת הש''ץ משיב הרוח, the Eibershter makes the wind blow, נשיב זיקא. He just said it and it blew and the wind blew.
אמר מוריד הגשם, and he said that he makes rain to come down, ואתא מיטרא, it started raining. אמר ליה, so Rabbi said to him, מאי עובדך? What do you do? What is it, what great zechut do you have? What things do you do that because of it you just said a word and it happens? אמר ליה, so he said like this, דאיירנא בכיסתא דחיקא. I live in a village that's full of poor people, דלית בהו חמרא לקידושא ולאבדלתא, they don't have wine for kiddush and havdalah. טרחנא, I matriach myself, ומייתינא חמרא לקידושא ולאבדלתא, I bring them wine for kiddush and הבדלה, ומפקינא להו ידי חובתייהו, and I motzi them ידי חובת קידוש and havdalah. I worry about them and I take care of them, and for that zechut he had this thing that he was just said a vort and it happened. In other words, sometimes you don't have to be a big tzaddik. I mean, I'm not saying these people are not tzaddikim, but you don't have to be a big tzaddik. Sometimes you have a special zechut, like the famous story of the Baal Shem Tov No no, the guy that what do you call it? The crazy beggar, the beggar whose tefillot helped. That maaseh, a long story, but the nekudah of the story is there were two tailors that went around traveling and they came, didn't have any money so they used to go fix some, came to a certain town and saw that the guy they stayed by the innkeeper was very טרד, very very sad. Anyway, he says the פריץ is making a chasunah and he gave me the job of finding a tailor to make the clothes for his family. And I brought him a million tailors, this and that. No one was satisfied and the time is almost up and he told me he's going to throw me out if I don't. So they said, \"We're tailors, we Yeah, but you're not professionals. Let's try.\" Anyway, went to the guy and they tried, they made a sample. He liked it. So he gave him the job and they made a lot of money, so they made after the job. On the job, they saw that he that the two tailors were so happy not only that they made money, that they helped the innkeeper, the Yid. So they said to him, \"I see you care so much about your fellow Jew, maybe you want to help somebody else. There's a Jew who didn't pay the rent and I threw him into the dungeon. If you want to maybe pay for him ransom, I'll let him go.\" So how much is it? He said 150 ruble and they together made 300 ruble. So one guy says to the other, \"You know what? Let's split. Let's No, let's pay for it. We have 300, let's give 100.\" So one guy said, \"No, okay, I'll give some money, I can't give the whole thing.\" So the other guy said, \"You know what? Let's split.\" So he took 150 and he gave all the money away and saved the guy. And that's it. The other guy who had the money came home, opened a place, and he made the money and became rich. The other guy became was very poor, had no money, he became meshuga. He had no money, he went around collecting, and he became meshuga. Once a גביר anyway, went someplace and he came over to him as a beggar and says, \"Give me some money.\" So he made a joke, \"What are you going to do if I give you money?\" \"What am I going to do? I'll give you a brachah.\" So he
gave him some money. He gave him a brachah that you should be matzliach whatever you do today. This guy had to go to do a deal with the פריץ and he knew always he had a hard time. That day went so easy and he made a lot of big deal. He's wondering why. He thought maybe it's the brachah of the guy. So next time he had to do some business, he went first, gave him a tzedakah, gave him a brachah. And that's how it went on and on, he kept making more money. People wondered how did he all of a sudden become so rich? He wouldn't say. He didn't want to give away the secret. Once it was at a party, had chicken, anyway, he gave away the secret. Ooh, so people found out. So people started coming to him. Yeah, and his brachot started coming true. Once a talmid of the Baal Shem Tov came by and he saw this. So he came back to the Baal Shem Tov, tells the Baal Shem Tov the story that there's a guy, beggar, א צודרייטער, א משוגענער, and he gives brachot and it helps. Baal Shem Tov says, \"Next time if you're there, please bring him, try to get him to me.\" So he came, brought him to the Baal Shem Tov, and the Baal Shem Tov accepted him. Asked him, \"Anything special that you do? A zechut?\" Like the Gemara says, he asked, \"What do you do?\" Just, \"Tell me your life story.\" So he started telling him, and תוכו דברים, he told him the story with the money he gave away. Baal Shem Tov stopped him. He said, \"That's it. In that zechut that you did the פדיון שבוים, you gave away your money, every brachah is helped.\" He said, \"Stay here.\" So he cured him from his שגעון and he taught him, he became one of the big talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov. Anyway, so here. In this case, why wasn't Rabbi's zechut better more than this in order to bring the rain? Or was too much, he didn't need it so, I don't know. That's how what you implied that you didn't have to come on to Rabbi's zechut. Yeah. You need to be a מבין in זכותים. Huh? You need to be a מבין in זכותים. Yeah, but Rabbi is You know Rabbi, you can't go better than the Rabbi. Well, I guess this guy humble, maybe it was it was a פשוט'er guy. It wasn't a big person. For a guy like that to do it It doesn't make him greater. It just makes it that
pass on the zechut. Didn't need didn't have The she'eilah is why didn't the zechut of Rebbe work? I mean, that all we don't know how this these things work. Gemara, Abba, whatever Chilki who was keeping the woman's clothes? Abba Abba Abba Abba Abba Chilki. Abba's ruach came to early Erev Shabbos ruach came to Ya, ya. Abba was kind of How do you call it? He was a he was a doctor. But that's what I'm saying. I mean We don't know It's like we learned in Rambam lately. We don't know how the Eibershter's cheshbonot work. It says I'm all one aveirah counts terrible, one lot of aveirot don't count. We don't know how the Eibershter's cheshbonot work. Okay, I guess we'll stop here, no? Yeah. You don't know how's cheshbonot Shamayim. No, we don't know how's. Can't know. Be a mevin in neshamot, right? The story with the
