Abulafia and Moshe De Leon discussion

Ask him then. What? He was on קבלת שבת? Yeah, who was on קבלת שבת? Kotzkers. How about how about what's the name? The flashlight? The light candle on Shabbos? Wasn't there wasn't there a a מקובל Abulafia? Abulafia was a great מקובל. No, no, but one of the in the velt of this that later also became Moshe Delorani. De Leon you said? Huh? Is that De Leon? I know he was in the time of the I don't know that either. He's the one who with the Zohar? With the Zohar? Oh, that's Moshe De Leon. De Leon, yeah. I thought that's what you said. Moshe De Leon, but this is Moshe De Leon, this is Moshe Delorani. The Abulafia was a big משפחה, Abulafia, still today. They're מקובלים. The the Minchat Elazar went to Eretz Yisrael, special to see him. One of the last one. After he left, he was very old though, over a hundred. When he left, that's when he died. Okay. Thank you. Where's everybody holding? ס״ו? ס״ו, holding ס״ו. I don't see any any candidates for the shiur tonight over there. Yeah, I see a lot. I see a lot. Okay. Are they indoors? I see a lot. Rav Chanina I know. It's tragic.

Rav Chanina ben Dosa rain parable

Rav Chanina ben Dosa, the famous Rav Chanina ben Dosa. הוה קאזיל באורחא, he was going on the road. אתא מיטרא, it started raining. אמר לפניו, he said to the Eibershter: רבונו של עולם, כל העולם כולו בנחת, everybody is having a good time, they're happy that it's raining, וחנינא בצער. I have tza'ar, I have a trip. פסק מיטרא, stopped raining. כי מטא לביתיה, he got home, אמר, he said to the Eibershter: כל העולם כולו בצער וחנינא בנחת. The whole world is suffering. I am I'm good, but the whole world has no rain, they're suffering. אתא מיטרא, came rain. So, in other words, these tzadikim, a vort is a vort. אַ וואָרט געהאַקט, that's it. No, but that seems a little bit selfish on the tzadik's part, not to use that word. I said it seems. We'll see later. Can be awful. אַלץ וואָס טוט זיך אין דער וועלט, everything goes through the tzadik. His tza'ar is the tza'ar of the Shechinah, the tza'ar of the Eibershter itself. I understand, but it doesn't make sense. It's That's He knew that! You think you didn't know a tzadik doesn't Unless a tzadik gadol doesn't know that he's a tzadik gadol, or he's a fool. אמר רב יוסף, Rav Yosef said: מאי אהניא ליה צלותיה דכהן גדול? Tzadik gadol, everything came through his He was a tzadik gadol. We don't find we don't find much learning from him. דברי Torah. But his tzidkus, yeah. He was a tzadik gadol. So, he said what helps the davening of the Kohen Gadol לגבי Rav Chanina ben Dosa? לגבי Rav Chanina ben Dosa the Kohen Gadol's tefillah doesn't help. What's the Kohen Gadol's tefillah there? Now, it says in the Mishnah: כהן גדול מתפלל תפלה קצרה בבית החיצון. The Kohen Gadol would go out of the Kodesh Hakodashim on Yom Kippur and standing outside, he would daven a short tefillah. Why have so a short one? שלא להבעית את ישראל, not to scare, because people weren't there, they're waiting for him to come out. And if it takes long, people get nervous because many Kohanim Gedolim died inside the Kodesh Hakodashim and they wouldn't know. So, they told him to daven, it's good opportunity to daven, but daven a little bit, short. Was it just the Heichal, or the Kodesh Hakodashim? Not just No, it says בית החיצון. Right outside. Thank you. Yeah, outside the Heichal, outside outside of the Kodesh Hakodashim, but it was in the Heichal. Now,

Kohen Gadol short tefillah explanation

listen. Yeah. מאי מצלי? What did he daven? So, רבא בר רב אדא ורבא בר בר חנה תרוייהו משמיה דרב יהודה אמרי, this is what they say in the name of Rav Yehudah. This is what he said, very short: יהי רצון מלפניך ה׳ אלקינו, may it be the will of You, Hashem our God, שתהא שנה זו שחונה וגשומה. We say the the long version. Yeah, not much longer. Oh, we say it, yeah. Shechunah means it should be hot, v'geshumah, it should be rainy. Said the Gemara: Shechunah, hot, למימרא דמעליותא היא? It's good? אדרבה, גריעותא היא, it's bad! אלא, he meant like this: אם שחונה היא תהא גשומה, even if it's hot, it should be rainy. In other words, it should be able to cool off and be able to give rain. And then he added: ואל תכנס לפניך תפלת עוברי דרכים. We say in משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם. That's human. That's Saying to the Eibershter, that tomer somebody is on the road and he's asking you, davening for to you that you should stop raining because he has to go on a trip, don't listen to him. רב אחא בריה דרבא מסיים בה משמיה דרב יהודה added: ולא יעדי עביד שולטן מדבית יהודה, that he would add, and this is what we add also, that there should never go away the ruler should be Yidden from Yehudah, which means from מלכות בית דוד, ולא

Tzedakah and self-sustaining communities

יהו עמך בית ישראל צריכים זה לזה להתפרנס זה מזה, אידן shouldn't have to get parnasah one from another, because that's terrible, A Yid darf onkumen tzu a tzveytn. And ולא לעם אחר, not to anybody else. Yidden should have their own parnasah. But the bottom line, we see that the כהן גדול דאווענד. Now, when came to Chanina ben Dosa, Kohen Gadol's tefillah didn't help. In other words, if the Eibershter had to listen to the כהן גדול or to Rav Chanina ben Dosa, Rav Chanina ben Dosa's tefillah came first. בית יהודה shouldn't be all the kings of it's a berachah. If we were for sure like that, wasn't it a berachah? You should see it, I guess. What does it mean, ולא יהו עמך בית ישראל צריכים זה לזה להתפרנס זה מזה? You mean for a person gets stuck here to come for that person, because עצה's or Or you're doing business. Why not do business between Jews? So, what In those days, it wasn't business. In those days, most people did agriculture. So, when do you have to come to another person to to buy food or to do business, when you don't have yourself. Oh, if you're saying stuck here No, even if to buy Even if, it means that something is wrong. Because let's say a person has money, but to get, your field, something is wrong with his field, not producing. Not producing. So, you should have to come on to others. So, they were basically self-produced on their own farm? Yeah, everyone had their own makolet. But over here though where he says let them go, taking turning over money, that means they have... But in today's, in today's day and age, it's business, it means... So, it's tzedakah? Yeah, now it's, now it's tzedakah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And the mefarshim say, what was his havah aminah, that he would finally saw from the other? Is that because they will get parnasah. So, I mean to say that the ani is more to the ashir, but he just... Zechut. You saw... they will get parnasah. That's, that's zechut of tzedakah. Everybody knows they will have parnasah. He had He had He had Yeah. That's how he wrote it. Very nice, I didn't see... on the prayer. Oh, you see it? Well, I didn't read the original article. No, he wrote for the He saw Jonathan Sacks. No, he wrote whatever, he wrote that, uh... It's very nice. Very, very nice. It was a nice recap, though. What? What? What? He battled with Yenem Macha twice in his lifetime. One he was 30, one he was 50, and only he knew, cuz he said he saw from his father. When his father wasn't well, his father said to the Eibershter, \"I'm going to do what I have to do. But if it's time for me to go, it's time for me to go.\" But he said, \"בידך אפקיד רוחי, I'm giving...\" You know, he said, every day in davenen. He said, \"You don't have to do it cuz you're really saying it every day in davenen, that you're giving it to the Eibershter. So, you really believe it. And you know, you're always well. Just keep it well.\" Very nice. I mean, he's a... Aber die New... A shrayber un a redner. Yeah. No, did he knew? Just like everyone else. I'm sure people in England knew. So, he's No, that was the whole point. He said, \"Why didn't you ever...\" Tell anyone? \"...ever mention your books, tell anyone?\" He said, \"What for? What do you have to?\" It says, \"It's a good It's a good Very inspiring. אמר רב יהודה אמר רב: No reason, b'chol ofen, when you're not well to to to to... A person has to do everything, you have to do derech hateva. I think the frierdiker Rebbe, chas v'shalom, say b'chol ofen... No, I'm saying what telling and and the frierdiker Rebbe said something with, my shver once told me that you don't You don't want to... I don't remember exactly the wording, but but but, chas v'shalom, you don't feel good or whatever, you ought this not to... Complain. ...not to publicize it, in other words. Well, the Gemara says that. It's a zechut. And I think that anyway, you clear all this. But you want other people to daven for you, though, no? That's Well, it says that two שיטות in the Gemara. One, Rava, one said he told why, so people should know. The other hand is that people should daven for you, you should tell them. So, a chiluk first three days... That's a zechut. We also in shul they have preventative Mi Sheberach. They're perfectly healthy, but they make a Mi Sheberach anyway. That's, that's wonderful. That's a great idea! Preventative Mi Sheberach. Who does that? No, the people come and give a name. I don't know, then after, I realize he gave his own name! The guy's standing in front of me! He's... I know it's preventative. Before! Before the mark came! A סארט דרך! I remember A whole lot of preventative! That's, that's better, it's like a vitamin! That's it! I remember when my father went, came to Cleveland, so he arranged, he started, when in his פוילעס he started doing made in the My father made sang Tehillim Shabbos מברכים in the shul, שומרי שבת. There's a shul there. A לוישער, but people came, so one guy comes in, close to the davenen, he didn't he didn't always He walked, he walks over, he says, \"Who's sick?\" I mean, they say Tehillim, \"Who's sick?\" So, my father answered him, \"No, no,\" so my father answered him, \"Mir zogn Tehillim az men zol nisht, men zol nisht krank vern.\" \"We say it in order that people shouldn't get sick when you're sick. You shouldn't get sick.\" Well, what's it says, it scours the vessel today. That's today's Hayom Yom. Which is the vessel? The body? What they talking... Min has'tam, the body. Yeah. אמר רב יהודה אמר רב: כל יום ויום בת קול יוצאת ואומרת, \"כל העולם כולו אינו ניזון אלא בשביל חנינא בני. וכל העולם כולו אינו ניזון אלא בשביל חנינא בני, וחנינא בני דיו בקב חרובין מערב שבת לערב שבת.\" And he himself needs nothing, he needs for to eat the whole week from Friday to Friday a קב חרובין. And the Baal Shem Tov טייטשט, the word, the word שביל doesn't only mean because, shvil is a road. Right. That the whole world gets it, so it's in it of the tzaddik hador. The point is that's why when he has an tza'ar, he davened. What's it pashut? Wonder what he ate on Shabbos. Huh? What did he eat on Shabbos? The charuvin! It's Friday, it was from Friday, it wasn't from ערב שבת, not from Sunday to Friday, from Friday to Friday. Today's live, you must have big tzaddikim, because we're getting a lot of food. We never had so much food. Hayntige tzaddikim have groise hasagos in esen. Are you saying, uh, Are you saying they're making a GMO? The tzaddikim, the charuvin is enough, so what did the people get? You see, it's a derech, the velt zogt that the sheyarim of a of a Rebbe, of a tzaddik, is a segulah of parnasah. Sheyarim of a of a chasid is a segulah of יראת שמים. Why? Because by a tzaddik, what's his leftovers, שיריים, פרנסה. יראת שמים is his. And by a חסיד, יראת שמים so this. So, hayntige rebbes, give them a sach. But they have groise hasagos, so they give Look how nobody wants my sheyarim. Huh? Look how nobody wants my sheyarim. Kein eynehohre. קיינער זוכט נישט קיין יראת שמים! And our sheyarim would give יראת שמים, cuz that's what you drop off! You gave a good tip, cuz you have an answer for No matter how hard I'm trying, you always have an answer. זאגט די Gemara ווייטער, כל מעלי שבתא הוה רגילא דהוות, every Friday his wife used to מ... She

Rabbi Chanina's wife's oven miracle

had no food, nothing to cook, but s'iz nisht gepast, she was embarrassed not to cook, Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa's wife. So she used to heat up the oven, ושדיא קוטרא בתנורא, puts things which give off smoke, משום כיסופא, because she was embarrassed, so it should look like people from the outside seeing the smoke coming from her house, מסתמא באקט זי חלה, baking challah. הוה לה ההיא שיבבתא בישתא, she had a bad neighbor. אמרה, that neighbor said, מכדי ידענא, I know דמידי לית לה, I know she has nothing to cook, what's she doing there? איזיל ואחזי מאי, I want to go see what's happening there. She says, smoke coming out, she's cooking, what's going on? אזלא, she went, טרפא אבבא, she went knocked on the door. איכסיפא, so Rabbi Chanina's wife got embarrassed, because she knows she's going to walk in, and she'll see there's nothing cooking. ועיילא לאינדרונא, so she went and hid in a room. איתעביד לה ניסא, a nes happened, דחזיא לתנורא דמליא ריפתא, the neighbor happened to walk in, and saw the oven was full of bread! A nes happened! ואגנא דמליא לישא, and the bowl was full of dough. For the next batch! אמרה לה, so she said to her, פלניתא פלניתא, she didn't see her, so she screamed, rebbetzin, Mrs. Mrs., אייתי מאנא דחריכא לריפתא, go bring a כלי to take out the bread, the bread is going to burn! אמרה לה, she said to her, אף אנא להכי עיילי. She said, yeah yeah, that's what I went, I went to get. So of course she was lying, because she didn't go for that. זאגט די גמרא תנא, we learned, אף היא להביא מאנא נכנסה, she takeh went for that, מפני שמלומדת בניסים היתה. She was used to nisim, and she knew it would happen. Expected it! She expected it, she went away, and she knew she'd come back, so she takeh went, she wasn't lying, she went to find this kli. אמרה ליה דביתהו, so the wife said to him, עד אימת ניזיל ונצטער כולי האי, how long will we suffer like this to be so poor? אמר לה, he said to her, שמא נעביד? Plutzling zi hot im genudzh(et) un genudzh(et) un genudzh(et). Finally, he said, what should I do? With all the nisim she's complaining! It's a regular conversation. She doesn't want to live on nisim, she wants b'derech hateva. Hateva, what she's asking for is not teva. She said so he said, what do you want? What should I do? אמרה ליה, she told him, בעי רחמי דליתבו לן מידי, daven to the Oibershter that they should give us something, something מן השמים. בעי רחמי, so he davened. יצתה כמין פיסת יד, like a hand came out from שמים, ויהבו ליה חד כרעא דפתורא דדהבא, and gave him a leg of a golden table.

Dream of golden three‑legged table

Imagine such a piece of solid gold. Sell it for millions of dollars, and you can make a lot of money and be rich from now on. חזא בחלמא, but he saw in his dream דכולהו צדיקי, that all the צדיקים אכלי אפפתורא דדהבא דתלת כרעי, everyone, all the tzadikim are eating on a table of three legs. They're all in Gan Eden eating on a table, a golden table of three legs. ואיהו דתרתין כרעין, and he is sitting on a table only has two legs. אמר לה, so he said to her, ניחא לו, are you ניחא לך, are you happy דכולהו צדיקי אכלי אפפתורא דתלת כרעי, that all tzadikim will be eating on a table of three, tells to his wife, said to her, ואנן נאכלין אפפתורא דשקול חד מנייהו? And we're going to eat on table which one of the legs are taken away? Where's the fourth leg? Huh? I guess they used to on three, it could hold. Yeah, three legs. Could hold on four, too. It's a round table. It's a round table. Why it went for Only three legs. Maybe the table, you know you're asking lechatchilah, why are those tables made of three? So maybe it's the zechut of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, because Rashi in Chumash says that when the Eibershter told Moshe Rabbeinu I'm going to kill the Yidden after the egel. \"I, I promised a nation to Avraham, I'll make you into a big nation.\" So what did what did Moshe answer? מה דאך a table, a chair he says there, which is on three legs can't hold, because you want to kill them, so it'll be only on me, it'll be on one on one leg. So we see also there he used the lashon three legs. It's a square table. Huh? That's a square table. Here is Where is four, a square That's what you just said, מה דאך Three, מה דאך a chair with three can't Okay. can't hold. He's saying around A round table could be three. No, no. At that time, by the עגל, no, because the Yidden did the aveirah and the zechut of the avot didn't help them, the three avot, my zechut will help? I'm only one. Good. So he's referring to a four a four-legged table. No, why? He says a three-legged table doesn't hold. He didn't say, so let's have a four, he just said, three-legged table is no is normal. And never and it still didn't hold. Oh, it still didn't hold. Okay. You'll start taking off one of the legs now. No, I'm just thinking of gold, I'm just thinking round tables in you know in olam haba. Maybe, maybe, maybe, yeah. With three legs. So he asked her, do you really are you happy with this? אמרה ליה, she said to him, so מאי נעביד? So what should we do? Too late, we got the leg. So she she answered, בעי, no, בעי רחמי דנשקלוה. Let's daven that the Eibershter should take it back. בעי רחמי ושקלוה, they davened and took it back. תנא, we learned, גדול נס אחרון יותר מן הראשון, the second nes that they took back is greater than the first. דגמירי, because we know, מן שמיא מיהב יהבי, משקל לא שקלי, from shamayim they give, they don't take. And the fact that they took it back is a afilu a gresere nes, it's a bigger nes than the fact that they gave. Now what was the what were they supposed to do with this leg? I mean, it was that that it came down. Cash it, sell it, okay. Yeah, make a lot of money. Yeah. So the Rebbe uses this Gemara by the barad. There's a machloket by the barad,

Barad debate: Moshe's prayer and hail

what happened to the ברד when משה רבינו דאווענט? One, one says it stopped, and one that got stopped, one one it went back. One that got in midair and then the Eibershter sent it back later by למלחמת יהושע. למלחמת, yes. So the Rebbe explains that the שאלה is which is a bigger nes, because if the Eibershter send down the ברד, and if you take it back, that doesn't happen. Therefore, it left in the middle of the air. Doesn't matter? 6 10. Well, that was that was on, that was on power of teshuvah, what you just said? They're connected to power of teshuvah, yeah. I'm saying Whether teshuvah is complete or not. כי מישקל לא שקלי, here it's talking about because he gave a good thing, but here Yeah, but they don't take back, they don't take back, from שמים they don't take back. It's not considered taking back. It's just like you say that if that if a גזירה לטובה the Eibershter never מבטל Yeah, but it never started. Here it came already, and to take it back is a is something the Eibershter, מלעילא they don't take back, don't take back. I mean that it's a nes, a big nes. צדיק גוזר Yeah, but it's a, it says that they happened, but it's a נס גדול, נס אחר, and it's a very big nes. Could be still holding in the midair That's that's the two דעות, no? Of this, not. Still holding There, one דעה is it's in the middle of the air, not that it's holding, it came down later, but it stopped in the middle of the air because the Eibershter wouldn't take it back, and the other one is that the Eibershter could take back, would take back. You find stories of other tzadikim also. He gave back. A maaseh with צו Rabbi Nachum, צו Rabbi Mendele Horodoker, sitting once by a tish, and somebody came to him, he said, \"Somebody is coming to me and asking me for a tikkun, and I can't give him a tikkun, and but the guy wants because he gave me a present, a stick.\" It's one of the מעשיות that they always use for the מעלה of מעמד, pay giving if you give מעמד to the Rebbe, it helps the man and the Rebbe is מחויב to you, you understand? So so here he gave, so they would You're not supposed to you're not supposed to necessarily, you're not supposed to ask the Eibershter for for פרנסה בריוח? בריוח is good, what's wrong with that? So you're not supposed to ask the Eibershter to take back? No. No, that was good, no. No, but at the end of the day, he saw the dream that he's losing out. Right, so No, but because they gave him the table, but if not for the He's losing out. He had so parnasah, he's losing out No, because he had they

Requesting a Portion of Olam Haba

asked they'd rather they'd rather not have it, yeah. No, because he asked for that. Because logically, actually, some גירסא says here, she said, \"Ask Hashem to give you מטובותא דגניזא לצדיקיא דעלמא דאתי.\" From from Olam Haba, take something from Olam Haba. You're going through things, the Eibershter, this is what the Eibershter wants you to go through, yeah? That's a mitzvah to daven. So that's what I'm saying. So what was No, but it depends She didn't want to take away from Olam Haba. From Olam Haba, but no, but it's not stam, because she she asked for Olam Haba. She asked, \"Give me a piece of Olam Haba.\" Where? There's even a girsa that says it בפירוש. Even if you don't have the girsa, that's the pshat. She said, \"מטובותא דגניזא לצדיקיא...\" That's the only way you can understand that. Otherwise, yeah, otherwise you should ask the Eibershter at all. So who had the dream, her or him? Says he had. Says חזי. יומא חד, one day, ברמשא, it was פארנאכט שבת, Friday, חזי לברתיה דהוות עציבא, he saw his daughter was sad. אמר לה, he said to her, \"בתי, למאי עציבת?\" Why are you sad? אמרה ליה, she said to him, \"דאחליף לי מאנא דמשחא במאנא דחלא\", I mixed up the keli of the oil with the keli of the vinegar, \"ורמאי בשרגא\", and into the candle which I which I just lit, I put in vinegar, so vinegar won't burn, and I guess it was already שבת she couldn't do anything, so mimela, I'm afraid it's going to the licht is going to, the licht is going to go out in a minute. What's that lashon? It's different from, it's the lashon of the Gemara. Completely different lashon. Strange. Okay. Maybe the English side is different? No, no, it's Look inside. Okay. \"כלי שמן החלפתי בסלע של...\" כלי שמן החלפתי בסלע של... חומץ ושמן. Okay, that's Hebrew, this is ארמיש. Oh, that's ארמיש. אמר לה, so he said, \"מי שאמר לשמן וידליק\", the same one, the אייבערשטער, who said that oil burns, \"יאמר\", he could say, \"לחומץ וידליק\", that vinegar could burn. Tana, we learned, היה דולק והולך כל היום כולו, it burned all day Friday night, all through שבת, עד שנטלו ממנו אור להבדלה. Lasted till Motzaei Shabbos, and he was able to take a fire to Havdalah from it. That's how it... So Kabbalah, Chassidus says what, how did he do it? צירופי אותיות.

Kabbalistic Power of Letter Combinations on Oil

צירופי אותיות, no? That's Why does shemen burn? Because the צירופי אותיות, the צירופי אותיות of shemen have such a quality in רוחניות that it makes burn, and chometz not. So a tzaddik is baal habayit, he could able to take the otiot and mix them up, and now shemen will burn. Like the Baal Shem Tov ice could What? Sheleg, he said that the ice will burn, yeah? Not snow. Also because of that? Sheleg? Yeah. Ice. And not sheleg, they are kerach, yeah, something, the same thing. That's what they do? Yeah. How do they do with a candle? Come on! Hashem will make it See, I don't know if he went to the otiot or that's what happened. He gave the, he said, and he said tut zich in himel with the otiot. But the vort is, it's צירופי אותיות of the עשרה מאמרות, that's how it works. Sof kol sof in Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah it says everything comes with צירופי אותיות, and the תכונות of things are dependent on what kind of צירופי אותיות are there. So when it changes the צירופי אותיות, it becomes differently. So what about But, when you said sheleg, I thought you meant something else, the famous started that somebody came to his Rebbe, his job, his business was to נעם קלעצער, to take wood from one place to Leipzig. So wintertime the best time was to do it when it was snow, and it was with a sled. So, but you need a lot of snow for that. So he went to his Rebbe for a berachah, and he gave him the amount of money that's בגימטריא שלג, 333 ruble. It's a lot of money, but he gave his Rebbe, and the Rebbe gave him a berachah that it should be a lot of snow. On the way home, he stopped by a different city, a tzaddik, so, a tzaddik, a berachah! But he wasn't his Rebbe, this, so he asked him for a brachah also for that should be snow, and he gave him 10 ruble, כ'ווייס וואס, נו, l'foal it was a disaster. It didn't snow, it rained the whole, the whole winter, and he had צרות צרורות. He came to the Rebbe with ta'anot. So he said, \"You gave me בגימטריא שלג, you gave another 10, it's געווארן גשם.\" Like this. Yeah, שלג is 333, and this is 343. Moral of the story: stick to your, yeah, go to your Rebbe, don't go to another. Good story. Came גשם,

Question About Using the Havdalah Light

came, yeah. How'd he have benefit from the nes to light havdalah candle? Mm? Benefit from the nes. And the whole Shabbos how'd he benefit? Oy vey. The light, is it, is it the same? Yeah. Yeah. Well, now we could stop here. Let's stop here and leave this for tomorrow, then נאָך מעשיות. Yashar koach. We'll see whether we, after Maariv is the שיחה שיעור for those who are here and those who will come. Clear this, clear the glasses.
