We're holding סימן מ. Rav Anan. We're still dealing with a דיין not to take שוחד. Right down here. רב ענן אייתי ליה ההוא גברא כנתא דגילדני, דבי גילדא. A person brought him a basket, a thing full a jar full of a little fish herring, God knows, sardines. אמר ליה he said מאי עבידתך? Why are you here? אמר ליה he said דינא אית לי. I have a דין Torah. לא קבילתה? And he didn't accept it. אמר ליה and he said to him פסילנא לך לדינא. Since you brought to me this this this thing, this present, I can't פסק your דין, I can't be your דיין. Even if it's little fish. אמר ליה he said to him דינא דמר לא בעינא. דבעינא. I didn't mean you should take my דין Torah. I'm just telling you I'm here for a דין Torah not by you. קבולי נקבל מר. At least, but to take the present. Why didn't you want to take the present? I'm not asking for a דין Torah. I came of a דין Torah. And the
reason I'm asking you to take it, דלא ליתנעי מר מהקרובי ביכורים. I don't want you to hold me back from bringing ביכורים. דתניא, it says in the פסוק in the ברייתא like this, the פסוק says, ואיש בא מבעל שלישה, ויבא לאיש האלקים לחם בכורים. So a man came to Elisha the the נביא, and he brought him bread ביכורים. What did he bring? עשרים לחם שערים, 20 breads of barley, וכרמל בצקלונו. And then he also כרמל this is different types of dough. Why did he bring him בכורים? One second, and the question is, וכי אלישע אוכל בכורים הוה? Elisha ate בכורים? Elisha wasn't a כהן, and besides that kind of כהן? בכורים could only in Yerushalayim. He was not in Yerushalayim. What what's kind of בכורים is Elisha? אלא לומר לך this teaches you, כל המביא דורון לתלמיד חכם, anybody that brings a present to a תלמיד חכם כאילו מקריב בכורים. Like he brings bikkurim. So, this is what the guy said to him, why didn't you want to take my present? Why are you stopping me from bikkurim? אמר ליה, so he said, קבולי לא בעינא דאיקבל. Be'emet, I didn't want to take. והשתא דאמרת לי טעמא, now that you gave me that reason, אקבלינא, I will take it. I will take it. So, he took it. Yeah. The ma'aseh, like it
says in the beginning of Tanya, we just learned that to to an anav doesn't mean a person who thinks thinks if, for example, Rava says, \"How could Rava make a mistake in aveirot? Maybe he was an anav.\" An anav doesn't mean stupid. A talmid chacham knows he's a talmid chacham. Doesn't have to hold himself big because of that. Like it says, Moshe Rabbeinu was the biggest anav, he didn't know who he was, didn't know he was mekabel the Torah? But he thought that any person would have all his his neshamah and all the and his parents and all these other things would've been just as good as him, or even better. But he knows who he is, so he knew he was a talmid chacham, and there's not a question. But I am going to ask a question about why they didn't take when they weren't all sitting on the דין תורה? What was that answer? That the guy's intention was not Why didn't this guy want to take? Okay, so his intention. So, what's No, why didn't he want to take? Because he thought the same No, even after he told him, he said, \"The only reason I'm taking because you gave me the good reason.\" Had he not given him the reason when he told him Because he called him a talmid chacham and he treated him like a But before that he wouldn't have taken it, even if he told him he doesn't want a דין תורה. Because it's, he thought he gave it with the intentions of bribery. And the mind, I'm not taking it so, okay, but you had that in mind. But now he found out, he said, \"I never intended you to have a דין תורה. I'm just bringing it as bikkurim.\" So, he took it. Well, it's not, yeah, he didn't bribe mamash. But still look what happened here. So, he
said go to a דין תורה, go to Rav Nachman. שלח ליה And Rav Nachman sent a message and Rav Anan sent a message to רב נחמן לידייניה מר להאי גברא. Please, you will judge this case, this person, דאנו אנא ענן פסילנא ליה לדינא. Because me Anan I'm פסול. Now why did he say he was פסול? Because he brought him this Now, Rav Nachman who got the message, אמר he said, מידי דשלח לי הכא since he said to me that he's פסול, why would he be pasul? משמע דקריביה הוא. Probably, he's his קרוב. That's why. Oh, so this guy came as a קרוב to this to Rav Anan. הווה קאים דינא דיתמי קמיה. באמת there was like a turn, so the one before him whose turn was to have a din Torah was an יתום. אמר he said, yeah, האי עשה והאי עשה. To give kavod and to be nice to a יתום is an עשה, but to be nice to a talmid chacham to give a kavod to a talmid chacham is also an עשה, and עשה דכבוד תורה עדיף is stronger ממילא, because he thought that he was Rav Anan's קרוב, so by giving him first choice, he's really giving kavod to Rav Anan. Rav Anan sent him. So, he pushed away, סלקינהו לדינא דיתמי, so he pushed away the next one in line of the יתום ואחתיה So, he says it, but it's an עשה, but one is a כבוד תורה. Yeah, but it's kavod to a to talmid chacham, to someone who learns Torah. So and he pushed away that דין. כיון דחזא בעל דיניה, since the בעל דין, the other guy, the litigate litigant of of this other guy saw יקרא דקא עביד ליה, that Rav Nachman is giving him כבוד, אסתתם טענתיה, so he couldn't he he lost his טענות, he couldn't, you know, give his טענות, because he said, \"This guy is already, you know, go- going to win.\" So this shows, even this was wrong. In- indirectly, yeah? Indirect, but the Gemara says like all the time, you can't do anything by a din Torah that would be מסתתם טענותיה, that the guy It says in halacha, you can't have one sit and one stand and give all... So it says even if a talmid chacham comes with an עם הארץ, and you have to give כבוד לתלמיד חכם, you're not allowed to. Cuz the moment he sees that you're turning to him more, and you're So right away he feels already it's a lost case, and he won't טענה, he won't be able to ta'anah, and his mind doesn't work. Can't do that. So the Gemara weiter, רב ענן הוה רגיל אליהו דאתי גביה.
Rav Anan, Eliyahu Hanavi used to come to him דהוה מתני ליה סדרא דאליהו, he would teach him the תורות of Eliyahu. We have a a thing called Tana d'Bei Eliyahu. That's that. That's what it כיון דעבד הכי, as soon as he Eliyahu real saw what he did in the previous case, that he was the one that caused Rav Anan, who sent him to Rav Nachman with the message that, \"I'm פסול,\" which gave him a wrong impression thinking that he's a קרוב, so what hap- איסתלק. He didn't come to him anymore. יתיב בתעניתא, so he fasted, רב ענן, ובעי רחמי, and he דאווענט, ואתא, and he came. But כי אתא, when he came, אמבעית לבושיה, he came, he was scared from him. In other words, already his madrega wasn't as befo- before he was able to have גילוי אליהו openly, and now he was scared, it was too much for him. ועבד תיבותא, so he made himself a box, ויתיב קמיה, he would sit in the box he shouldn't see him, and learn. עד דאפיק כולי סדרא, until he gave him all the סדרים. So there are תורות that he learned from Eliyahu Hanavi before the ma'aseh with the box, and there are תורות he learned after. So היינו דאמרי, that's why we know there is the Seder d'Eliyahu Raba, Seder d'Eliyahu Zuta. We have that, Tana d'Bei Eliyahu Raba, Tana d'Bei Eliyahu Zuta. רבה means the big one, זוטא is the small one. The ones that he learned before is called Eliyahu Tana d'Bei Eliyahu Raba, and the one that he learned later is Tana d'Bei Eliyahu Zuta. Box Sitting in a box? No, he should be blocked out. He shouldn't see. When he saw Eliyahu, the גילוי of Eliyahu was so strong, and he couldn't take it. So he made sure that he was listening, he was there, and he listened to him, but he wasn't able to see him. It's interesting like we have tzadikim in later generations that had גילוי אליהו. גילוי הנשמה That's a That's a different ma'aseh. But that's an interesting ma'aseh.
Greineman in Lubavitch used to tell this story. That once the previous Berditchever came to the Alter Rebbe, and one of his big chassidim came along with him. And when he was talking to the Alter Rebbe, he mentions to him, \"See this chassid of mine? He's such a great man, he has גילוי אליהו.\" Told that to the Alter Rebbe? To Alter Rebbe. Punkt it was in shul, and Reb Binyomin Kletzker, the big chassid of the Alter Rebbe, was standing and davening Shemoneh Esrei. He was holding by שים שלום. So the Alter Rebbe says to the Berditchever, \"And this chassid, בשעת he's davening and holding by שים שלום, לאכט ער פון זיין גילוי אליהו. Laughing from his גילוי אליהו.\" So when the I heard this from that's a prior to the story, but I heard it from I don't know from, but mostly I heard it from Greineman. So he taytsh, what is the pshat? Because when you daven, and by Shemoneh Esrei, you reach a high madreigah of גילוי הנשמה, גילוי הנשמה is hecher from גילוי אליהו. And it and there's a lot of depth to that vort. גילוי אליהו doesn't show on a high madreigah. It shows on a special zechut you have. Because could be there are stories of people, פשוטע יידן that they did weren't any madreigot, but they did such a מסירת נפשדיקע thing of פדיון שבויים and that that אליהו revealed himself to them. It's a zechut. גילוי הנשמה, נישט קיין זכות. You have to work on pashut a מדרגה, דערהערן די נשמה, the way די נשמה דערהערט אלוקות, that's a So this chiluk So גילוי גילוי אליהו is like a like you have the famous story with the with the beggar who his berachot started helping, you know, Baal Shem Tov. Story's a long story, but there was a beggar, two guys, two tailors who were traveling. Simple tailors, they weren't big tailors. Trying to make some money. Finally they came to a place, they stopped off in a קרטשמע on the way back from all their trips, and they made some money, they got, I think what it says, 600 rubel that they made. That's going to be their big they stopped off in a in an inn, and they saw that the innkeeper is very distraught and very nervous. And they ask him what happened, so he says, \"pashut, I have a pritz here. I work for the pritz, and the pritz is a צודרייטער משוגענער, he's making a chatunah for his daughter, and he gave me the job to find a tailor to make all the clothes. And as many tailors as I brought to him, the professionals and nothing No, but he told me, \"Time's coming, you got to do it.\" So these guys said, \"We're tailors! Maybe we could...\" \"Tailor... You guys are tailors? איך מיר tailors.\" I mean, they're stam, they could sew a button. \"Well, what do you care? Try.\" So he told the poritz. The poritz came, they made a sample, he loved it! Loved it. And he told him that, yeah, this is the guys. Anyway, the end was, they were... He told the Yid that, \"If you don't get me... but I'll throw you out of the inn.\" So, when the poritz had gotten and paid them, he paid them money, so they said, they saw how these two Yidden were so happy, besides the money that they made, that they helped this Yid. So he said, \"I see you guys happy to help a friend of yours, I'll tell you maybe there's something else. There's a Yid who took the kretshme, he doesn't have, he didn't pay me the rent. I threw him into the dungeon. Now, maybe you're interested in paying his rent for him, and I'll save him.\" \"So, how much is it?\" \"300 ruble.\" So, one guy makes a cheshbon that all together he got 600 ruble. \"Let's give half of the money for this.\" And one guy said, \"I'm ready to give 10 ruble, 100, but not all of the money!\" So he said, \"You know what? Let's split.\" So this guy became... And this guy took the 300 ruble, gave it away, you could imagine, and he saved the whole family. Okay. What happened is, the guy who kept the money opened a business, a tailor business, and this, and he became a rich man. The other guy didn't came with nothing, didn't have anything, became a מרה שחורה, he didn't have a penny, became a beggar, and became משוגע פשוט. A lot of things... What happened further? There's one guy, a tall, a Yid who was going, had a businessman who... and they used to stand around, collect money. So this guy was going once for a business trip, he was going to make a deal with a poritz who he knew always he had only a big hard, hard time with him. Anyway, on the way there, he meets this guy, says, \"Give me some money.\" He says, for a joke, he says, \"Now if you... I give you money, what are you going to do?\" \"I'll give you a berachah.\" \"Give me a joke.\" So he gave him a coin. That time, the deal with the poritz went so easy. He thought, \"פש, what happened to some...\" Maybe as a... So next time, before he made a deal, he found this guy, gave him again. The same thing happened. Again and again, he became rich, became a rich man, but he didn't tell anybody. Once by a party by his family, to get a little shikor, so they asked him, \"How'd you make money?\" So he told them the secret. Told them the secret, so they all started going, and his berachot all helped. Once, one of the talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov passed by the city, and was in Vilna, and they saw this. So, later when they came to the Baal Shem Tov, they said, \"This guy, his ברכות פשוט help.\" The Baal Shem Tov said, \"Next time you're there, I want you to bring him to me.\" So, they, and they convinced him, he went to the Baal Shem Tov. The Baal Shem Tov asked him, \"Tell me your life story.\" He told him everything, but this... Baal Shem Tov said, \"No, there must be something else.\" Finally, he reminded himself, so he told him the story. So the Baal Shem Tov said, \"This zechut that you mesirat nefesh, m'hat gefaskent lemala that your berachot should help.\" Dervayl, he said, \"Stay here.\" He cured him from his meshuga'as, taught him Torah, he became one of the big talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov. So here, imagine, a guy's berachot helped? It's not a בעל מדרגה, it's a zechut that he had. Same with giluy Eliyahu, you could have a zechut, אליהו comes to you. But גילוי נשמה is something else. Okay, I think that story will finish the learning today. Good story? Well, because, same thing with the one that רב אדם בעל שם wrote to the Baal Shem Tov, where his, what he's a he's a gilgul of. The Baal Shem Tov didn't want to be נתגלה, and Rav Adam Baal Shem told him, \"You must be נתגלה.\" Finally, he sent him a letter, he says, \"If you're not נתגלה, you're not fulfilling the purpose of your neshamah down here.\" And he told him, \"I want to tell you who you're a gilgul of. A few hundred years ago, there was a Yid in Tzfas, a פשוטער איד, a non...\" And once there was a knock on the door. Who is it that knocked on the door? Who walked in? Eliyahu Hanavi walked in. And he says, became the whole house, that's what he writes to him, became freilach. עד כדי כך, the little babies in the crib started dancing. And he says, \"I'm Eliyahu Hanavi. I came to tell you the day Mashiach will come. On one condition: You were, the reason you were zocheh for this is something you did on the day of your Bar Mitzvah, something special. In that zechut, you got it. I want and tell me what the what you did, I'll tell you when Mashiach will come.\" He says, \"I'm not, I did it for the Eibershter, not for anybody. So I won't tell you.\" \"So don't tell me, I...\" So Eliyahu Hanavi left, came למעלה, געוואלד, a גאנצע טומל. Imagine such a Yid, that he would give up knowing when Mashiach would come because he didn't want to, he did it l'shem shamayim. So it's a whole deal למעלה, came down that Eliyahu should come down again to him and start teaching him. Because that פשוט did not know anything, started teaching him Chumash, and Gemara, and this, teaching him... Finally Kabbalah. He reached such a high madregah, this guy, that he became, the לשון that Rav Adam Baal Shem wrote, the אחד בדור, he became the high, the greatest person in generation. Passed away, came למעלה, they looked in his case, imagine, only one problem with him: No one had anything from him. Also, he was a high מדרגה, די וועלט האט נישט הנאה געהאט from him, so that was a פסק למעלה, his neshamah should come down again, and he'll be in the same madregah, but now, he'll spread into the world. And that was the Baal Shem Tov. So he said, \"If you're not going to be נתגלה, then what's the purpose?\" So also, who did he come to? To to... דאס איז אין חרסונער גניזה. חרסונער גניזה was, אה? Gilgul. Yeah, Baal Shem Tov... גראדע אויפן אלטער רבי מען זאגט נשמה חדשה, בעל שם טוב גייט א גלגול. רב אדם בעל שם, ער האט געשריבן דעם בריוו. Alter Rebbe... נשמה חדשה. That's what the Baal Shem Tov says. Klar. דאכט זיך אין תורה אור ער שרייבט עס, הא?
