Leaving Babylonia Prohibited โ€“ Gemaraโ€™s Warning

ื–ืื’ื˜ ื“ื™ Gemara that we're holding here in middle towards before right before ืž\"ื–, ืข\"ื. ืืžืจ ืจื‘ ื™ื”ื•ื“ื” ืืžืจ ืฉืžื•ืืœ. Rav Yehuda says in the name of Shmuel, ื›ืฉื ืฉืืกื•ืจ ืœืฆืืช ืžืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ืœื‘ื‘ืœ, just like you can't leave from ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ to ื‘ื‘ืœ, ื›ืš ืืกื•ืจ ืœืฆืืช ืžื‘ื‘ืœ ืœืฉืืจ ืืจืฆื•ืช, you can't go from ื‘ื‘ืœ to other countries. ืจื‘ื” ื•ืจื‘ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื“ืืžืจื™ ืชืจื•ื•ื™ื™ื”ื•, Rabbah and Rav Yosef both say: ืืคื™ืœื• ืžืคื•ืžื‘ื“ื™ืชื ืœื‘ื™ ื›ื•ื‘ื™. And ื‘ื™ ื›ื•ื‘ื™ is not so far, but it was outside of ื‘ื‘ืœ, you can't travel from Pumbedita to ื‘ื™ ื›ื•ื‘ื™. And the Gemara tells a story, ื”ื”ื•ื there was this man, ื“ื ืคืง ืžืคื•ืžื‘ื“ื™ืชื ืœื‘ื™ ื›ื•ื‘ื™, he did leave from Pumbedita to ื‘ื™ ื›ื•ื‘ื™, ืฉืžืชื™ื” ืจื‘ ื™ื•ืกืฃ, Rav Yosef put him in cherem. ื”ื”ื•ื ื“ื ืคืง ืžืคื•ืžื‘ื“ื™ืชื ืœืื™ืกื˜ื•ื ื™ื, there was a guy who left from Pumbedita to ืื™ืกื˜ื•ื ื™ื, ืฉื›ื™ื‘, he died. ืืžืจ ืื‘ื™ื™, Abaye said, ืื™ ื‘ืขื™ ื”ืื™ ืฆื•ืจื‘ื ืžืจื‘ื ืŸ ื”ื•ื” ื—ื™ื™, if he would want, this ืชืœืžื™ื“ ื—ื›ื would want, ื”ื ื’ื™ื™ื˜, ื”ื ื’ื™ื™ื˜, ื”ื ื’ื™ื™ื˜, if he would have wanted, he could have lived longer. The reason he didn't live so long is because he did something wrong, he left from ื‘ื‘ืœ to a different place.

Kasherรฉ Jews and the โ€œDoughโ€ Metaphor

ืจื‘ื” ื•ืจื‘ ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื“ืืžืจื™ ืชืจื•ื•ื™ื™ื”ื•, Rabbah and Rav Yosef both say: ื›ืฉืจื™ื ืฉื‘ื‘ื‘ืœ, the kasher'e, the fine Yidden from ื‘ื‘ืœ, ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ืงืœื˜ืชืŸ, ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ contains them. ื›ืฉืจื™ื ืฉื‘ืฉืืจ ืืจืฆื•ืช, ื‘ื‘ืœ contains, ืงืœื˜ืชืŸ, the good people from the other countries ื‘ื‘ืœ takes them. And what does that mean? ืœืžืื™? ืœื’ื‘ื™ what din? What do you mean that it takes them? ืื™ืœื™ืžื ืœื™ื•ื—ืกื™ืŸ, if it's a ื™ื•ื—ืกื™ืŸ, which would mean like this, that the kasher'e people of ื‘ื‘ืœ are absorbed, in other words they marry into families of ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, and the kasher'e people of other countries marry into the families of ื‘ื‘ืœ, but that's not true! The people from ื‘ื‘ืœ would not marry somebody from Eretz Yisrael. No, because ืืžืจ ืžืจ, we learned, ื›ืœ ื”ืืจืฆื•ืช ืขื™ืกื” ืœืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, all countries are like like dough to Eretz Yisrael, just like dough has a lot of ingredients, but you look at the dough, you can't see what's inside. Same thing, the people from other countries compared to Eretz Yisrael, you don't know who was mixed in there, which ones really kasher, the yichus was shvach, Eretz Yisrael was much better meyuchas. ื•ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ืขื™ืกื” ืœื‘ื‘ืœ, ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ is considered dough ืœื’ื‘ื™ ื‘ื‘ืœ. That means that in Bavel it was much more, in Bavel, there was much more, yichus was much more. So then how do we say that people from Bavel are absorbed by Eretz Yisrael, that they intermarry with Eretz Yisrael? They wouldn't marry the ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ'ื“ื™ื’ืข people, because to them Eretz Yisrael is not good enough! And Eretz Yisrael would not marry with others because others are not good enough for them. Ela what does it mean? It means pashut something else, it means ืœื’ื‘ื™ ืงื‘ื•ืจื”, about burying. Which means like this, that the people of Eretz Yisrael, of Bavel, since they were not far from Eretz Yisrael, they would get buried in Eretz Yisrael. People who were far would try to make it at least to Bavel.

Living in Babylonia Equals Living in Eretz Yisrael

ืืžืจ ืจื‘ ื™ื”ื•ื“ื”, Rav Yehuda ื”ืื˜ ื’ืขื–ืื’ื˜: ื›ืœ ื”ื“ืจ ื‘ื‘ื‘ืœ, anybody who lives in ื‘ื‘ืœ, ื›ืื™ืœื• ื“ืจ ื‘ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, as if you live in Eretz Yisrael. What's the peshat? What does it mean if you live in... so the ืจื‘ื™ quotes here, the Meiri says, why? Because wherever there is Torah, it's like Eretz Yisrael. So he says that's a makor in in from the Rishonim to the vort of the Tzemach Tzedek, If you make it a ืžืงื•ื ืชื•ืจื”, you're making it Eretz Yisrael. He was talking then about Crown Heights then. Huh? When the Rebbe said it, he was talking about Crown Heights then. No. Not about Crown Heights. In Heights he was talking, he said then, Crown Heights? ื›ืืŸ ืฆื™ื•ื” ื”' et habrachah, but mach da ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ was talking about any place, he said. Any country, Tzemach Tzedek, but the Rebbe quoted that lashon many times, what the Tzemach Tzedek said. He said to to to somebody, I think it was Reb Hillel, or somebody who wanted to go to Eretz Yisrael, so he said, ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ืื™ื– ื ื™ืฉื˜ ืคืืจ ื“ื™ืจ, but he said, \"I really want to go!\" Mach da ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ. Yeah, so he says if you live in Bavel, it's like you live in ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, ืฉื ืืžืจ, it says, ื”ื•ื™ ืฆื™ื•ืŸ ื”ืžืœื˜ื™, you from ืฆื™ื•ืŸ, ื”ืžืœื˜ื™ means run away, hide, where should you live? ื™ื•ืฉื‘ืช ื‘ืช ื‘ื‘ืœ, live in Bavel. So we see Bavel is equal to Eretz Yisrael. The percentage of chachamim at that time in Bavel... more than that, much more, so that's why. Yeah, yeah, okay. I mean, like 80%? 80% 20%? Actually from the churban... from the ื—ื•ืจื‘ืŸ ื‘ื™ืช ืจืืฉื•ืŸ, ื”ื—ืจืฉ ื•ื”ืžืกื’ืจ, so it says in Gemara, ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ... Bavel was always more ืžืงื•ื ืชื•ืจื” than Eretz Yisrael.

Bavelโ€™s Immunity from Mashiachโ€™s Suffering

ืืžืจ ืื‘ื™ื™, ืื‘ื™ื™ said, naktinan, we know, ืื ื’ืขื ื•ืžืขืŸ, ื‘ื‘ืœ ืœื ื—ื–ื™ื ื—ื‘ืœื™ ื“ืžืฉื™ื—. Bavel will not see the suffering that the Yidden will suffer before Mashiach will come. It's a big zechut, in other words they will not suffer the suffering of Mashiach. great, huh? So wait, no, it's like Iraq? No, I can't believe that. Where where's Bavel? Is that Iraq? What's...? Only Iraq? Just that? Oh, Iraq. But bafoal, now it's not, now it doesn't mean there. There's no Yidden there bichlal, I mean, a few Yidden. So so it means there's other places. Place as a ืžืงื•ื ืชื•ืจื”. Something was like... In Bavel the Yidden were there hundreds of years, but then they moved. ื›ืœืœ ื™ืฉืจืืœ moved around. ืขืœื• ืžื‘ื‘ืœ. Huh? So here Bavel doesn't mean Bavel. ืขืœื• ืžื‘ื‘ืœ. Yeah, ืขืœื• ืžื‘ื‘ืœ meant Eretz Yisrael. Mhm. But we're talking about they moved not to Eretz Yisrael, they moved to Europe, different places. So here Bavel doesn't mean Bavel. But he says ืชืจื’ื•ืžื, they ื“ื™ื™ื˜ืฉื˜ it doesn't mean the whole ื‘ื‘ืœ, ืื”ื•ืฆืœ ื“ื‘ื ื™ืžื™ืŸ. ืื”ื•ืฆืœ ื“ื‘ื ื™ืžื™ืŸ, whatever that area, that's the area that was the best. They called it, and they would... in Bavel, and they would call it ื›ื ื ื“ืฉื™ื–ื‘ืชื, the corner of protection. Because because that was, would, if you're there, you'd be protected from the ื—ื‘ืœื™ ืžืฉื™ื—, from the labor pains of ืžืฉื™ื—. ื–ืื’ื˜ ื“ื™ ื’ืžืจื weiter, ืืžืจ ืจื‘ ืืœืขื–ืจ, ืจื‘ ืืœืขื–ืจ said, ืžืชื™ื ืฉื‘ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ... Where is it exactly? It's the safest place. It's something else, ื—ื‘ืœื™ ืžืฉื™ื— spiritual thing. Huh? I don't know. It's not a physical place? That's right, there's problems, but but safest places, I don't know if that has to do with ื—ื‘ืœื™ ืžืฉื™ื—. I don't know. Maybe. Maybe. The Rebbe didn't say it. The pasuk says it. ืืจืฅ, the Rebbe said, \"ืืจืฅ ืืฉืจ... ื”ืณ ืืœืงื™ืš ื‘ื” ืžืจืฉื™ืช ื”ืฉื ื” ื•ืขื“ ืื—ืจื™ืช ืฉื ื”.\" That's a pasuk. So, it means we have to go back there? We have to go where? South East South East Baghdad? No, no, we could stay here. Don't don't go. Don't go to Baghdad. I know, I'm kidding. At that time, the time when the Gemara said it, Bavel was the place. So, then more it's all taste it, more... Yeah, wherever is the ืžืงื•ื ืชื•ืจื”. Like it says, where where is It says in Gemara, what was this similar to the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืงื“ืฉ? That's, so in Bavel it was the the ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžื“ืจืฉ of ืฉืฃ ื•ื™ืชื™ื‘. And the Rebbe called here, that's it, now it's in other places. Now it's in Crown Heights, now it's the main ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžื“ืจืฉ. So, we see this all moves.

Resurrection of the Dead Outside the Land

Those that die in chutz la'aretz will not get up Shene'emar, it says, \"ื•ื ืชืชื™ ืฆื‘ื™ ื‘ืืจืฅ ื—ื™ื™ื\". In ืืจืฅ ื—ื™ื™ื, who will be ืืจืฅ, who will be ื—ื™ื™ื, who will live from the ืืจืฅ? Only where there is ืฆื‘ื™ of the Aibershter. What's ืฆื‘ื™? ืืจืฅ ืฉืฆื‘ื™ื•ื ื™ ื‘ื”, a land which my image is there, my will is there, ืžืชื™ื” ื—ื™ื™ื, its dead will get up. ืฉืื™ืŸ ืฆื‘ื™ื•ื ื™ ื‘ื”, a place which is not, which is not ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, ืื™ืŸ ืžืชื™ื” ื—ื™ื™ื. ืžื•ืชื™ื‘ ืจื‘ ืื‘ื ื‘ืจ ืžืžืœ, Rav Abba bar Memel asked a kashya, doesn't it say a pasuk, \"ื™ื—ื™ื• ืžืชื™ืš ื ื‘ืœืชื™ ื™ืงื•ืžื•ืŸ\"? \"Your dead will get alive, and the ื ื‘ื™ืœื•ืช, the dead bodies will get up.\" Why does it say double? Mai lav, doesn't it sound, \"ื™ื—ื™ื• ืžืชื™ืš\", your ืžืชื™ื will get up, that's ืžืชื™ื ืฉื‘ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ. And when it says, \"ื ื‘ืœืชื™ ื™ืงื•ืžื•ืŸ\", and it doesn't say if my, yours, that's ืžืชื™ื ืฉื‘ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ. That dead they they, those dead bodies will get up. So, we see from this derash that even in ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ, ืžืชื™ื ืฉื‘ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ will get up. Then he says, so then So, what does the pasuk mean, the first pasuk that he darshent, \"ืฆื‘ื™ ื‘ืืจืฅ ื—ื™ื™ื\", that who will be in ืืจืฅ ื—ื™ื™ื only those places? He says, \"No, ื‘ื ื‘ื•ื›ื“ื ืฆืจ ื›ืชื™ื‘\". That go on Nebuchadnezzar. ื“ืืžืจ ืจื—ืžื ื, the Torah was saying, the Eibershter was saying, \"ืื™ื™ืชื™ื ื ืขืœื™ื”ื•\", I'm going to bring on them, \"ืžืœื›ื ื“ืงืœื™ืœ ื›ื™ ื˜ื‘ื™ื\". I'm going to bring that on them, against them, a king that's going to be as light as a deer. That's ืฆื‘ื™. So, that's the Eibershter was telling them that I'm going to bring Nebuchadnezzar against you. But it's not saying anything to do with ืืžืจ ืœื™ื”, he said, \"ืจื‘ื™, ืžืงืจื ืื—ืจ ืื ื™ ื“ื•ืจืฉ. I have another pasuk.\" How is he light as a deer? Huh? How is he light as a deer? Meaning it was easy for him to conquer. Aha. Huh? Was it? He stole 24,000 times, and finally it was lost. Yeah, well, good. In other words, sof kol sof, he conquered it. I mean, which really it should have been harder, they shouldn't have been able to do it. So, he said, \"ืจื‘ื™, ืžืงืจื ืื—ืจ ืื ื™ ื“ื•ืจืฉ. I have another pasuk.\" It says a pasuk, \"ื ื•ืชืŸ ื ืฉืžื” ืœืขื ืขืœื™ื”\". \"He will give a neshamah to the nation that's on it,\" on that land, \"ื•ืจื•ื— ืœื”ื•ืœื›ื™ื ื‘ื”\", and the spirit will come back to those that go there. Okay? So, he has a derash that they won't. It's again a derash that, would, they won't get up. Either other ืคืกื•ืง says, \"ื ื‘ืœืชื™ ื™ืงื•ืžื•ืŸ\", which we said before means, the second half of the ืคืกื•ืง that even ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ will get up? So, he says, \"ื‘ื ืคืœื™ื ื”ื•ื ื“ื›ืชื™ื‘\". What was the re'iyah? Because the ืคืกื•ืง said double, same thing. It says, \"Your ืžืชื™ื will become alive and your ื ื‘ื™ืœื•ืช will get up.\" So, he says, so why say twice? So, one must be ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, one must ื—ื•ืฅ... It's a different derash. One was for people who were alive and died, and one was for children who were born stillborn, who were lechatchilah dead. That's also they also will get up Huh? ื“ื ืคืœื™ื. ื“ื ืคืœื™ื it says, no, how ื‘ื ืคืœื™ื it's ืงืื™. By ื ืคืœ. Then the Gemara, ื•ืจื‘ื™ ืื‘ื ื‘ืจ ืžืžืœ? Rabbi Abba bar Memel, what does he say? How does he derash'n this? He says that ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ will also get up, ื”ืื™ the ืคืกื•ืง says he will put the neshamah into the am that's ืขืœื™ื”, that's on it in ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ? Says ืžื‘ืขื™ื ืœื™ื”, he needed ืœื›ื“ืจื‘ื™ ืื‘ื”ื•, what Rabbi Abahu said. ื“ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ืื‘ื”ื•, ืจื‘ื™ ืื‘ื”ื• said, ืืคื™ืœื• ืฉืคื—ื” ื›ื ืขื ื™ืช ืฉื‘ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, even a ืฉืคื—ื” ื›ื ืขื ื™ืช of ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, ืžื•ื‘ื˜ื— ืœื” ืฉื”ื™ื ื‘ืช ืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ื. She's guaranteed to have olam haba. She's a ื’ื•ื™ื”, ืฉืคื—ื” ื›ื ืขื ื™ืช, yeah, just living in ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ. That's what he meant. When he said I'll give the ื ืฉืžื” ืœืขื ืขืœื™ื”, that means olam haba. They're not allowed to live there. Huh? I thought goyim are not allowed to live there. That's if they're not avadim or shfachot. ื›ืชื™ื‘ ื”ื›ื, how do we know that? Because it says here: ืœืขื ืขืœื™ื”. She would have the same like a Lashon Hakodesh, eved, comes a ื—ืฆื™ ืื™ื“. Yeah, I mean not ื—ืฆื™, she's not ื—ืฆื™, not It says ื™ืฆื ืžื›ืœืœ ื’ื•ื™ ื•ืœื›ืœืœ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ืœื ื‘ื. So they keep all the like an isha. Yeah. And an isha, she keeps like an isha. She's not, see the eved is worse than the regular, different than a regular Yid. She, she's mamash like a regular Yid. She's an isha anyway. She does everything that's an isha. She's also possession of a Yid. She belongs to a Yid, that's, yeah, that's the So when does she become a Yid? Ah? If you meshacherer her, that's it. What about when Mashiach, what about this Who are we talking about? Doesn't say, she doesn't take part in But what's the re'aya she'll have Olam Haba? Because ื›ืชื™ื‘ ื”ื›ื, here it says: ืœืขื ืขืœื™ื”, it uses the word ืขื. ื›ืชื™ื‘ ื”ืชื, there's another pasuk that says ืฉื‘ื• ืœื›ื ืคื” ืขื ื”ื—ืžื•ืจ, so we darshen ืขื ื”ื—ืžื•ืจ, ืขื ื”ื“ื•ืžื” ืœื—ืžื•ืจ. When he said, when Avraham by the akeidah said to to Eliezer and to Yishmael: sit here together to with the donkey, ืขื ื”ื—ืžื•ืจ, says you are a nation like a chamor. And then Eliezer was a Yes, he's a great someone, and he was still a kena'ani. When he wanted his daughter to marry Yitzchak, what did he say? ืืชื”, who is the ืืชื”? Eliezer. Eliezer was, it says ื“ื•ืœื” ื•ืžืฉืงื” ืžืชื•ืจืช ืจื‘ื• ืœืื—ืจื™ื, and he's still called arur, because he's a kena'ani. But here we see it's ืขื ื”ื“ื•ืžื” ืœื—ืžื•ืจ, so the word ืขื goes on ื›ื ืขื ื™ื, and here it says ืœืขื ืขืœื™ื”, so we darshen that they're going to have Olam Haba. What's the second part of the pasuk where it says ื•ืจื•ื— ืœื”ื•ืœื›ื™ื ื‘ื”, and there will be a ruach for those that walk on it, walk in Eretz Yisrael?

Four Amot Walk Guarantees Olam Haba

ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ื™ืจืžื™ื” ื‘ืจ ืื‘ื ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื•ื—ื ืŸ, ืจื‘ื™ ื™ืจืžื™ื” ื‘ืจ ืื‘ื in the name of ืจื‘ื™ ื™ื•ื—ื ืŸ, ื›ืœ ื”ืžื”ืœืš ื“' ืืžื•ืช ื‘ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, anybody who walks four ืืžื•ืช in ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, ืžื•ื‘ื˜ื— ืœื• ืฉื”ื•ื ื‘ืŸ ืขื•ืœื ื”ื‘ื. He's guaranteed Olam Haba. In Yerushalmi it even adds a few words: ื›ืœ ื”ืžื”ืœืš ื“' ืืžื•ืช ื‘ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, ื•ืžื“ื‘ืจ ื‘ืœืฉื•ืŸ ื”ืงื•ื“ืฉ, and you speak Hebrew, you're ืžื•ื‘ื˜ื— Olam Haba. ืœืฉื•ืŸ ื”ืงื•ื“ืฉ is not ืขื‘ืจื™ืช. So therefore every Yid who lives in Eretz Yisrael is guaranteed Olam Haba because he lives in Eretz Yisrael, and he speaks, I don't know, that's the problem. He speaks ืขื‘ืจื™ืช not ืœืฉื•ืŸ ื”ืงื•ื“ืฉ. Half of, half of ืขื‘ืจื™ืช is not ืœืฉื•ืŸ ื”ืงื•ื“ืฉ. I once, I once heard a bachur ask, Israeli bachur came, he asked somebody, He doesn't have, these words, he thinks it's Hebrew. Anyway, so here it doesn't say in Gemara doesn't even say, the Gemara makes it easier. You don't even have to speak. ื›ืœ ื”ืžื”ืœืš ื“' ืืžื•ืช ื‘ืืจืฅ ื™ืฉืจืืœ, if you walk ื“' ืืžื•ืช in Eretz Yisrael, you're guaranteed you'll have Olam Haba. Then the Gemara asks: so Rabbi Elazar who says that the people from Chutz La'aretz don't get up, ืฆื“ื™ืงื™ื ืฉื‘ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ ืื™ื ื ื—ื™ื™ื, the tzadikim from Chutz La'aretz will not get up? ืืžืจ ืจื‘ื™ ืืœืขื–ืจ, Rabbi Elazar said: ืขืœ ื™ื“ื™ ื’ืœื’ื•ืœ. They will get up, but not in ื—ื•ืฅ ืœืืจืฅ. They'll have to roll underground, pop up in Eretz Yisrael. ืžืชืงื™ืฃ ืœื” ืจื‘ ืื‘ื ืกืœื ืจื‘ื, so Rav Abba Sala Rava asked: ื’ืœื’ื•ืœ ืœืฆื“ื™ืงื™ื ืฆืขืจ ื”ื•ื? The tzadikim, you expect them to roll, it's a tza'ar!

Tzadikimโ€™s Underground Passage โ€“ Gilgul Explained

The Eibershter will make for them tunnels, and they'll be able to walk out, they'll have to walk, but it's not rolling. No? No. Here it says gilgul, here it says So it doesn't say, someplace it says a ืœืฉื•ืŸ ื’ืœื’ื•ืœ ืžื—ื™ืœื•ืช, but here it doesn't even say the word gilgul, but first he said gilgul, but like changed. It's not really gilgul, it's walking. Al kol panim, afilu it's gilgul, it's not that you're going to be in the ground, you're going to be able to So Yaakov was worried, Yaakov was worried Yaakov was worried for this, yeah. That's, yeah, huh? He was still worried, even if he has to walk. Yeah, yeah, he didn't want to, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, he didn't want to. Oh, yeah.
