Which Nations Have No Share in the World to Come?
Part of Ein Yaakov · 16:39

we're holding here סימן מ\"ט. אמר רבי אלעזר, Rabbi Elazar said, עמי הארצות אינם חיים. עמי הארצים, ignorant people, will not get up techiyat hametim. שנאמר, it says, מתים בל יחיו, רפאים בל יקומו. The מתים will not get up, the רפאים, the weak ones will not get up. What does that mean? So the Gemara will explain that the ones that are weak in Torah will not get up. תנינא נמי הכא, it says in a ברייתא, מתים בל יחיו, and it says the מתים, the dead people will not become alive, יכול הכל, so everybody? No! No techiyat hametim, there will be no resurrection of the dead? תלמוד לומר, no, רפאים בל יקומו. רפאים is the word weak. במרפה עצמו מדברי תורה הכתוב מדבר, if someone is weak from Torah. Now, I have to make it clear, in the time of the Gemara, when it says an עם הארץ, it didn't mean like we use the term now. עם הארץ doesn't mean someone doesn't know how to learn. Doesn't mean that. The עמי הארצים in the time of Gemara were not so religious, were not so careful with mitzvot. Huh? No, no. Certain things they did, certain things they didn't. למשל, they didn't take off מעשר and they, that's why you had to to make take off דמאי, they weren't careful with that, they weren't careful with טומאה וטהרה, people are טמא, you had to be careful with them. But they weren't, yeah, they were lacking yirat shamayim. No, farkert! Every time we take off is because it's a safek. The case is when an עם הארץ tells you \"I took off\", חכמים said that even though most עמי הארצים do take off, but since since some didn't, חכמים made a דין you have to take off again. But this is talking about a person who is weak in Torah. Now, it doesn't mean weak in learning, דברי תורה, weak in keeping the Torah.
אמר ליה Rabbi Yochanan, so Rabbi Yochanan said to him, to רבי אלעזר, לא ניחא למרייהו דאמרת להו הכי. The Master doesn't like what you're saying, the Aibershter is not happy with this, this is not, the Eibershter doesn't like this peshat. כההוא במרפה עצמו מעבודה זרה כתיב, what it means is if someone weakens himself to Torah and does avodah zarah, that's the person that doesn't get up. אמר ליה, so he said, מקרא אחר אני דורש, I have another pasuk where it says, it says, כי טל אורות טלך, the dew of the light is your dew, וארץ רפאים תפיל, and you're going to fall into the land of רפאים. And he דרש'נט, כל המשתמש באור תורה אור תורה מחייהו. בכלל the word tal a lot of times is used for techiyat hametim, cuz for some reason it says the לשון טל תחיה which means there are a certain dew that the Eibershter uses, will use to make the dead people alive. So if someone used the Torah, in other words, learned תורה, אור תורה מחייהו, the light of Torah will be mechayeh him, will give him life. Olam Haba mentioned that all Yidden have, but that's techiyat hametim, no? Yeah. Yeah, let's just finish this line and then the... וכל ב... No.
Oh, the same here, it's a mistake printed. Oh boy. Yeah. This print has a mistake. That's twice the same page, and the back is the second page instead of the, there's no, it's the first page, it's missing a page. No, no, this, this is the next page, you see בית אשכול, here the same thing בית אשכול. מתים מתים, it's a mistake, a printing mistake. Here, give me yours. Yeah, yeah, what does it say here? Okay, let's see where we're holding. Oh, so he said, from there we דרש, כל המשתמש באור תורה, anybody that uses the light of תורה, אור תורה מחייהו, the light of Torah will give him chayut, will give him life. וכל שאינו משתמש באור תורה, if you don't use the light of תורה, אין אור תורה מחייהו, the light of Torah will not give him chayut. That's what he טייטש'ס, כי טל אורות טלך, if you have the tal of אור, or Torah, then you will have the tal of techiyat hametim, but if not, not. So he says, so even though the previous pasuk, he says you could answer it doesn't mean someone who is weak in Torah, someone who's avodah zarah, but here I have another pasuk. כיוון דחזייה דקא מצר, so when he told him this, he saw that he feels bad, that he, he tried to show him that everybody gets techiyat hametim, and he showed him a pasuk that the people who don't stick to Torah will not get, so he says don't feel bad.
אמר ליה, he says, רבי, מצאתי להם תקנה מן התורה. I found in the Torah an advice for them. They have an advice how they should get up תחיית המתים. The pasuk says, ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים כולכם היום. If you're connected to ה' your God, you'll be alive. So he darshent the word חיים for תחיית המתים. So the etzah is how to get תחיית המתים if you're davek in the Eibershter. Now, what does that mean? וכי אפשר לדבוקי בשכינה? Can someone connect himself to the שכינה? Ah? Were they not davek through the mitzvot that they did? No, but you see what he says here. He's adding, basically what he's adding is he has to be התקשרות צו דער רבי, then it helps. If not, not. That's, no, he says that. וכי אפשר לדבוק בשכינה? Can you get close, connect to the שכינה? והכתיב, it says כי ה' אלקיך אש אוכלה הוא. The Eibershter is like a fire. Now, it doesn't mean a physical fire, but you can't grab a, grasp onto fire. אלא, it means like this. It says if
you're davek, if you connect yourself to a תלמיד חכם, which is a צדיק, כל המשיא בתו לתלמיד חכם, you marry off your daughter to a תלמיד חכם. והעושה פרקמטיא לתלמיד חכם, you do business with a תלמיד חכם, you give him the business. Because actually it says in halachah that if you have two people doing the same business, selling the same merchandise, one is a תלמיד חכם, one not, so the halachah is you let the first תלמיד חכם sell his. And then let go. So if a person sells, does the business תלמיד חכם. והמהנה תלמיד חכם מנכסיו, and somebody who makes a תלמיד חכם have hana'ah, meaning use, from his property, his possessions, he gives basically things to a תלמיד חכם, מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו נדבק בשכינה, the Torah says then you're connected to the שכינה. תלמיד חכם represents the שכינה, and that's what it is. Umimeila, what he's trying to bring out here is that he said before these people are not connected to the Torah, will not get תחיית המתים, but I have an etzah. If they connect to a talmid chacham, that'll help them out. Basically almost like he'll schlep them out. They're connected to the right thing, so they'll schlep them out. Then you ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים, you'll be alive. Why do we say that when we- Ah? Why do we say that after we come up to- Why do we say that? That's a, so what means it is. The pasuk has a million meanings. Yeah, sure. It's pashut pshat, to be close to the Oibershter. No, so what we're talking about everybody here standing in shul, what are we talking about when we say it? No, we're quoting the pasuk. I understand, so I'm asking why. Why do we say that? To say that if you're davek in Torah you'll have chayim. We're telling everybody that. If you're davek in Torah, in in the Shechinah, which is talmid chacham. He actually said in the Gemara before, that if somebody is מהנה תלמיד חכם from his מנכסיו, gives talmid chacham, it's like he brings ביכורים. So I remember, everybody remembers Shavuos'dike farbrengen, remember? ווי הייסט ער, Kowalsky? Shavuos is the time to bring ביכורים. So Kowalsky, Nachum Kowalsky used to bring to the farbrengen to the Rebbe ביכורים. Bring a basket of fruit and a big, big cake. Always cake full of frosting. The Rebbe would take a piece and then give them to give out, everyone would grab and get all full of frosting. But it was ביכורים, he brought ביכורים. Ah? And חלב and the almonds also, give him the almonds, well. Okay. כיוצא בדבר אתה אומר, a similar pshat, a similar pasuk. The pasuk says לאהבה את ה' אלקיך, you should love ה', ולדבקה בו, connect yourself to Him. The same kashya: וכי אפשר לאדם לידבק בשכינה? Can a person connect to the שכינה? The same kashya, because it says ה' is like a fire. אלא, the pshat is, כל המשיא בתו לתלמיד חכם, if you marry your daughter off to a תלמיד חכם, והעושה פרקמטיא לתלמיד חכם, and you do business with a תלמיד חכם, והמהנה תלמיד חכם מנכסיו, and you give from your nechasim, mean your possessions, to a תלמיד חכם, מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו מדבק בשכינה, the Torah considers it as if you connect to the Shechinah. Tanya explains, ah? Yeah, you support. But in Tanya, in פרק ב', he explains this, why is it like this? Not simple peshat because, you know, you do a favor. He explains there a mashal, a mashal of a child. A child is connected to the father. Even after the child is born, still feels connection. Which part of the child feels the connection? The feet? The brain! His head understands this is his father and his mind thinks the same way and he thinks. So his his head is connected. How are his feet connected? Very pashut. The feet and the whole body are connected to his head, and his head is connected to his father. U'meimeila everything is connected to his father. Same thing with Yidden. The Yidden are like one big body. The Oibershter is like the father. The head of the Yidden, the tzadikim, they're connected to the Oibershter. We, as the feet or the other part of the body of כלל ישראל, being that we're one and we're connected to our head, and that head is connected to the Oibershter, so meimeila we're all connected to the Oibershter. That's what it is. But here he gives examples of what to do: marry your daughter to a תלמיד חכם. But really it doesn't mean just, again, just like עם הארץ doesn't mean someone who doesn't know how to learn, תלמיד חכם doesn't just mean a person who who could learn. תלמיד חכם is a madreigah. It's a level, that's like a it's another expression for a tzadik. It's not just a תלמיד חכם. You could have people who learned, rachmana litzlan, people who learned and on Shabbos they wrote חידושי תורה. And that's not what we're talking about here, you're not connected to Shechinah. אמר רב חייא בר יוסף, רב חייא בר יוסף said עתיד, huh? Even if it means people full of מצוות, עמי הארץ? Mitzvot is not enough. תחיית המתים is not to do with mitzvot. So, oh, he
asked a she'eilah which I forgot to answer that, it's connected. He asked, it says, כל ישראל יש להם חלק לעולם הבא. עולם הבא, every Yid has עולם הבא, and עולם הבא means תחיית המתים. In that same Mishnah where it says כל ישראל יש להם חלק לעולם הבא, it says חוץ, besides a few. But there's a whole letter from the Rebbe that was written, printed before the נשיאות in in Lubavitch, now it's in the Igrot, where the Rebbe has a whole, whole אריכות. At the end is, every איד, if he has a neshamah, he has to have עולם הבא, and that's a logical thing. If the neshamah is נצחי forever, then he has a neshamah, and that's not affected by aveirot. There's the עצם הנשמה. The guf has to come back with the guf. No, it well it does, because the guf is also holy. גוף ישראל קודש and the guf is also נצחי, also eternal. The peshat is, oh has to go through cleansing. Oh, has to go a longer time, a longer cleansing. Eventually everybody will have a share to עולם הבא, get up תחיית המתים. Some will get up right away, some will take longer, some will have to go through. It's like in the Gemara we find, the רשעים have to travel further to get there. Yeah, yeah. Will be further away to get to Yerushalayim. No, they have to go through a lot of Yeah, yeah, we don't want to know that. But that's what it says. And the same thing here, so to go up תחיית המתים is not enough mitzvot. You do one mitzvah. You have to be a certain מלאים. מלאים כרימון. And even though they're called פושעי ישראל. The Torah says they are מלאים. Yeah, yeah, but it's not a it's not enough. The fact that they're I don't want to use the word רשעים, but the fact that פושעי ישראל pulls them back. So what's the difference between before and after? So it's not day one, it's day a hundred that you get up. What's the difference? What's the difference? At the end of the day, these 100 days you don't get up! So what? So you're always behind! You're always behind. Every day you go ילכו מחיל אל חיל. If you're a day late, you're always a day behind. If you're 100 days late, you're Can't catch up? No way to catch up then? No! No! There Here you can catch up. Here in one moment, יש קונה עולמו בשעה אחת. In one second you can get your עולם הבא. Over there, nothing you can do. היום לעשותם, today we can do and reach מדרגות. מחר לקבל שכרם. Tomorrow there it's only שכר. So wherever you are, like we learned a story before רב יהושע בן לוי, אשרי מי שבא לכאן תלמודו בידו. You come there, whatever you have in your hand, that's what you have. But it doesn't equalize all get equalized, and surely No, okay. No, no, no. There's a כלי אל תבוש, you know, there's no there's no kelipot. Everybody's No, but there are דרגות. There are still דרגות. It says It says when Mashiach will come, כל צדיק וצדיק נכפה נכבה נכבה מחופתו של חבירו, will be burned by the chuppah of somebody else, because somebody else has something more than his. Yeah. Yeah. But But the Alter Rebbe said: איך ווייס, איר וועט געפינען די די טיר צו צו מיר. Said that this, you know, he'll find the door to me, but the Rebbe will take care, yeah. Yeah, who said that? Alter Rebbe said it. Said it to who? To someone of us. Yeah, זאגט רב חייא בר יוסף: עתידים צדיקים שמבצבצין ועולים בירושלים. Tzadikim are gonna pop up, שפראצט ארויס, and come out of the ground in Yerushalayim. שנאמר, it says, ויציצו מעיר כעשב הארץ, they're gonna pop out from in in the city like the grass. What's the city? Which is the city? ואין עיר אלא ירושלים. City means Yerushalayim. שנאמר, it says, וגנותי על העיר הזאת. Hashem said, \"I will protect this city,\" and He uses the word עיר, and that was talking about Yerushalayim. ואמר רב חייא בר יוסף, Rav Chiya bar Yosef said something else. Huh? וגנותי, what kind of lashon is this? Lashon to to to protect. להגן? Yeah. Another thing he said: עתידים צדיקים שיעמדו במלבושיהן. The tzadikim will come out dressed. קל וחומר מחיטה, קל וחומר from a wheat. מה חיטה שנקברה ערומה יוצאה בכמה מלבושים, a wheat, when you plant a wheat, you don't plant it with the with the shell, it doesn't not clothes, and when it comes out, it comes out full of shells. So צדיקים שנקברו במלבושיהן, צדיקים that were buried with their לבוש, al achat kamah vekamah, certainly. What's the לבוש? תכריכין. תכריכים. That's what Rashi says here. Actually, this is not Rashi, this is Tosafot. תכריכים. I know, אבל Yerushalmi says there. So he brings a Yerushalmi, the Yerushalmi says it doesn't mean the תכריכים. Farkert, the Gemara says, it's in Yerushalmi, that אמר רבי, רבי said to his children, put me on the the less תכריכים the better, because when I get up, get up with the levushim. So which levushim? Not the levushim that you buried me, the levushim that he wore in his lifetime. So he says, don't put on too many תכריכים, it should be a hard job to put it on. So, so פשוט פשט he says is means תכריכים, but otherwise, there's a she'elah like if there's שעטנז, if there's שעטנז of תכריכים, מה שייך, who says it's שעטנז? No, doesn't it say somewhere I know what you mean, I'm just asking. That's what It says, do do צדיקים do no, do metim have have mitzvot? במתים חפשי. It says, but when they get up, they're going if they have שעטנז, they're going to get up with שעטנז, and they can't. Anyone, everyone's going to get up in Yerushalayim, or just No, צדיקים. Okay, עמך כולם צדיקים, I guess. How's that going to be for people that are in חוץ לארץ? No, חוץ לארץ we learn no one will get up. They're going to have to roll. Or you go like צדיקים go through the caves. Yeah. But they'll come up in ארץ ישראל. Everyone body feels the roll. It says tza'ar. Gemara says if it's the rolling is tza'ar.
Imagine rolling from Miami Beach. Yeah! It's a long ride. It's a long ride, yeah. That turns you off. You're rolling
