Rav Yaakov ben Dostai on Miles and Honey from Figs

runs from the cows and honey and the goats and honey comes from the dates, figs, figs, okay we're holding here. Okay, I think this we learned already yesterday. אמר רב יעקב בן דוסתאי, Rav Yaakov ben Dostai said, מלוד לאונו ג׳ מילין. Going from Lod to Ono is three מיל, a מיל is about No, it's about 3/4 of a mile. פעם אחת קידמתי בנשף, once I went early in the morning והלכתי עד קרסולי בדבש של תאנים and I went up to my ankles in honey. That's how the honey was from the from the figs. אמר ריש לקיש, Reish Lakish said לדידי חזי לי זבת חלב ודבש של ציפורי, I saw the area where milk and honey runs in the city of Tzippori which is ארץ ישראל ואבה שיתסר מילין אשיתסר מילין and the size of the area where it was זבת חלב ודבש was 16 מיל by 16 מיל, that's very big. Such an area where it's full of In Tzippori. Eretz Yisrael, Tzippori. This didn't happen all years, certain years the Yidden were zoche that they had it.

Rabbah Bar Bar Chanah on Israel’s Milk and Honey

אמר רבה בר בר חנה, Rabbah bar bar Chanah said, לדידי חזי לי זבת חלב ודבש של כל ארץ ישראל, I saw the running of milk and honey of the whole of Eretz Yisrael and if you combine all the areas, not every area had it, but if you combine all the areas הויא, it was the size like מבי גוביזי עד אקרא דחולבנקי area, this was certain known area so he says putting it all together it's from there. How much is that? עשרין ותריין פרסי אורכא 22 פרסה, length, ופושיה width שיתא פרסי שיתא פרסי, six פרסה which is a lot, very big. What is it today? That's what I said before, it's not always, you've got to be zoche. Yeah, with the Yeah, yeah. Rav Chelbo and Rav Avira and Rabbi Yosi bar Chanina, these three people איקלעו לההוא אתרא, they happened to come to a certain place. אייתו קמייהו אפרסקי, they brought an אפרסקי a a peach peach דהוה כאלפס כפר הינו, it was the size of a כלי of the area called כפר הינו. And how big was that אלפס כפר הינו? כמה הויא? How much, חמש סאין. So you had one peach which was five סאה. That's how big. אכלו שליש, a third they ate, והפקירו שליש and a third they just gave away, they threw it away, ונתנו לפני בהמתן שליש, and a third they gave to their animals to eat. Much more! Big! Yesterday we learned there was a guy found a cabbage. Left him a cabbage, had to go on top of the cabbage, they'd take a ladder, one cabbage, I mean. Some they were living in l'asid lavo, they were living with Mashiach, you know. Yeah. See

Milk and Honey Not Only for the Future

זבת חלב ודבש is not something of לעתיד לבוא. זבת חלב ודבש, when Yidden went to Eretz Yisrael, the Eibishter promised them it's a land of זבת חלב ודבש. This it says לעתיד לבוא, the fruit are going to be big. Cuz Yidden in Eretz Yisrael, when the meraglim brought, it wasn't this big. This is a this is bigger. Yeah, לשנה איקלע רב אלעזר להתר, the year later, so one year they met and they saw this peach, the next year Rav Elazar was there, ואייתו לקמיה, they brought one to him, נקטיה בידיה, he took it in his hand, ואמר and he said ארץ פרי למלחה מרעת יושבי בה. Why would the Eibishter give this a land to the people who are bad who live there? Because this was the goyim already who live there. But what he what he basically was saying it shouldn't happen, it shouldn't be. And the Gemara take tells stories of what of it shouldn't be. רב יהושע בן לוי איקלע לגבלא, Rav Yehoshua happened to be in גבלא חזינהו להנהו כתוזפת, he saw grapes, vines דהוו קיימי כי עגלי, they looked like calves. The shape of the grapes or the vines were like calves. They were very big, in other words he saw a grape the size of a calf, Size of what? A calf, a עגל. עגל! אמר, he said, he didn't realize it, אמר, he said עגלים בין הגפנים? What are calves doing between the vines? אמרו ליה, כתוזפת נינהו, these are the vines, these are the grapes. אמר so he said, he turned around to the ground and he said, ארץ ארץ, land, הכניסי פירותייך, take your peirot back. למי את מוציאה פירותייך? Who are you giving this? לעובדי כוכבים הללו? To these goyim? Cuz the goyim took over ארץ ישראל, שעמדו עלינו בחטאתינו because of our sins, they conquered us. So he said, shouldn't be like that. לשנה, next year, איקלע רבי חייא להתר, Rav Chiya happened to be there. חזינהו דהוו קיימי כגדיא, then he saw grapes like goats. Now, that means the grapes became smaller already, cuz calves are bigger than goats. That means that what he said, what Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said, like it happened, it became smaller. So when he saw it, אמר, he also didn't realize it, he said, עיזי בין הגפנים? You have goats between the grapes? אמרו ליה, they said, זיל, get out of here. לא תעביד לן כחברך, don't do to us what your friend did. Your friend said something like you, and it made them smaller. Now you're going to say something and make it also smaller. Don't, please don't say anything. Who told them? The goyim told them that? Not the goyim, the יידן, but it was mainly living the goyim lived there. זאגט די Gemara תנו רבנן, די רבנן האבן געלערנט אזוי. בברכתה של ארץ ישראל, when Eretz Yisrael is at its best, when Eretz Yisrael has the berachot, not always, but when it has the berachot, בית סאה, if you have an area of a בית סאה, which is not that big, עבדא ה' ריבוא כורין, would make 50,000 כור. 50,000? Yeah. And the Gemara makes the cheshbon, before we know it, 50,000 כור. In our cheshbon, I don't remember exactly, but it's it's a lot. Well, it's a measurement that within a within a סאה? Ah no, it's the amount of grain, it's the amount of produce. Yeah. You mean wheat? A wheat. But how much was it? Out of one בית סאה, you get 50,000. And he makes a cheshbon. And the cheshbon we have to keep a little the cheshbon, we hope to finish the cheshbon before Maariv. בישובה של צוען, in the place of Tzoan. Now, we know Tzoan is mentioned in חומש, צוען מצרים. Tzoan was the best, Gemara was it the best, the nicest, the the most fertile city, the nicest, the the big best city in Mitzrayim. And in Mitzrayim, we have a cheshbon that בית סאה עבדא ע' כורין. There was so good that in one סאה you would take out 70 כורין. And he's going to make, based on that cheshbon, he's going to come out that in Eretz Yisrael, it's in a בית סאה, 50,000. Right? תניא, it says in a ברייתא, אמר רבי מאיר, רבי מאיר said, אני ראיתי בבקעת בית שאן, I saw in the valley of Beit She'an. Now, Beit She'an is not Eretz Yisrael. So Beit She'an, I is not Eretz Yisrael. Nowadays? No. No, I know, but it's but it's not it's probably not this It's probably a different Beit She'an, they called it by the name. This Beit She'an is not Eretz Yisrael. So he saw in בית שאן, בית סאה עבדא ע' korin. I saw there one se'ah makes 70 kor. ואין לך מעולה בכל הארצות יותר מארץ מצרים. Now, the best of all the lands is Mitzrayim, שנאמר, it says כגן ה' כארץ מצרים, it's compared to the garden, to the garden of ה'. Now, in Eretz Mitzrayim itself, ואין לך מעולה בכל ארץ מצרים יותר מצוען, there's nothing better than צוען. Why do we know that Tzoan is the best of Mitzrayim? דהוו מרבו בה מלכי, there they would raise the kings, the princes would live there. דכתיב, it says כי היו בצוען שריו. Okay. So Tzoan is the best of the world. Now, if in Beit She'an one se'ah gave out 70 kor, and Tzoan is definitely better than Beit She'an, cuz Tzoan is the best in the world, so one thing for sure, that Tzoan gave out at least every se'ah gave out at least 70. Now, he wants to show Eretz Yisrael is much better than Tzoan. ואין לך טרשים בכל ארץ ישראל יותר מחברון. There's no other city in Eretz Yisrael which has hard land. Why are they comparing Beit She'an and Tzoan, what do we One second, let him finish. There's nothing דחברון דהוה קברא דשכבי, and that's why they used it for a בית הקברות. They buried people there because it wasn't so good for for for for growing stuff. So Chevron is the worst of Eretz Yisrael, what he's going to show is that the worst of Eretz Yisrael is better than the best of Mitzrayim, of the world. Va'afilu hachi, still חברון מבונה על אחת משבעה בצוען, חברון is seven times as good as Tzoan. Imagine, seven times. Where do we know that? דכתיב, it says וחברון שבע שנים נבנתה לפני צוען מצרים, it says Chevron was built seven years before Tzoan Mitzrayim. Now, מאי נבנתה, what does it mean? אילימא it means נבנתה ממש, פשוט that the city was built seven years before מצרים, אפשר אדם בונה בית לבנו קטן קודם שיבנה לבנו גדול? Mitzrayim was was was older than Canaan. So memeila why would he, the father, build first Chevron and then Tzoan? שנאמר, it says ובני חם כוש ומצרים ופוט וכנען, so Mitzrayim was older than Canaan. So why would Canaan, Chevron, which is part of Canaan, be built earlier? So obviously it doesn't mean it was built seven years earlier. אלא, it means שמבונה על אחת משבעה בצוען. It was built in such a way, seven times as good as Tzoan. Okay, so let's make a cheshbon. That's once So, if you have seven times and this is 70, in Tzoan you had at least 70. 7 x 70 7 x 70 is how much? 490. 49. Okay. והני מילי בטרשין, but Chevron is not the best of Eretz Yisrael. Chevron is the worst, the hard ones. אבל שלא בטרשין, if it's not טרשין, how much would it be? ה' מאה. ה' מאה would be Yeah, 500. What's the cheshbon of 500? Because if if 7 * 7 is 49, and 49 if you add one because if it's a little bit better, so it's 50 and times 10. What's the cheshbon times 10? 500. So it turns 500. But so he says, because if it's much better, if it's much better than Chevron, so it must be much better. So he made a cheshbon, how much would it be? That would be 500. Like this, it's 7 * 7 is is is 490, and this is a little bit more, so it's 500. So if that's 500, והני מילי שלא בברכתה, that's when it's not at its best. Normally, it's 500. Normally. אבל בברכה, בברכה כתיב, when it when you have bracha, Eretz Yisrael, how many times would that be? כתיב ויזרע יצחק בארץ ההיא וימצא בשנה ההיא מאה שערים. He found it the best, a hundred times as much. A hundred times 500 is 50,000. 500 times, it says times a hundred, is 50,000. That's the cheshbon the Gemara made that in Eretz Yisrael, in the good times, it should be, בית סאה should make ה' ריבוא, 50,000. Tzoan. Tzoan Mitzrayim. No, Goshen was good for Yaakov Avinu, for the tzon. Yeah, but not for, doesn't say that. Tzoan, it says, is the best. That's what they No, Goshen is the טוב הארץ מצרים, the best place for them to live and for for the cattle to feed. But the nicest place and the best place was Tzoan. If Tzoan was the capital then, I think it was Cairo. Cairo. Why do I think it was Cairo? If it's true, in Cairo they have a shul that has on the amud, on the bimah, a manteleh, it has a cover. On the cover, I saw the picture of it, on the cover it says that we have a mesorah, we have a kabbalah, that this place where the bimah is, that's where Moshe Rabbeinu stood in front of Paroh. Wow. In that space. In Cairo. Now, whether it's true or not, I don't know, but that's in Cairo. Yeah, yeah, it's still there. I saw it when the guys went to print to make the siyum Rambam in in in Egypt. So that's when they brought a picture. Oh yeah. They opened this one, I think, I think they did, yeah. There was a few shuln there. So they said they had a kabbalah, I don't know how the shul was built, probably a few hundred years ago, not more, but they had the kabbalah that this is the place where Paroh was, this is where this is where the bimah is, that's where Moshe stood. Oder ya oder nisht, I don't know. But if that's so, and Tzoan was the capital, I guess so maybe Tzoan is Cairo. I don't know, this I'm just making my own. In Alexandria they have Rambam shul. Yeah, yeah, the Rambam lived in Alexandria. The Rambam lived in Alexandria. That's why the Rambam writes, that's why the Rambam writes that you're not allowed to live in Eretz Yisrael. In the Eretz Mitzrayim. And if you live in Eretz Mitzrayim, you're over on three lavin. Then the Rambam all of a sudden adds, אלכסנדריא בכלל האיסור. Alexandria is part of the issur. Why does he say that? Obviously. Because he lived in Alexandria. People shouldn't think that because he lived there, it's allowed. Aha. That's why the Rambam used to sign his name many times, משה בן מיימון העובר ג' לאוין בכל יום. Really? Wow. Wow, the Rambam. What was his heter? I don't think he had a heter, I can tell you that. Is that an area or a city? A city.
