We're holding here. This Isi bar Yehuda. Years ago I had a קביעות. Where is he? He stayed in New York. Holding here, שם Isi bar Yehuda. This is what we're holding. Isi bar Yehuda. Yeah. There you are. איסי בר יהודה לא אתא למתיבתא דרבי יוסי תלתא יומי. Isi bar Yehuda didn't come to the yeshiva, to the shiur I guess, of Rabbi Yosi for three days. אשכחיה ורדימוס ברבי יוסי. So Vardimos the son of Rabbi Yosi met him. אמר ליה, he said to him, מאי טעמא לא אתי מר לבי מדרשא דאבא? Why didn't you come to my father's ישיבה כל הני תלתא יומי in these three days? אמר ליה, so he'll tell you why: כי טעמא דאבוך לא ידענא היכי אשעי. Your father said something and I don't know the reason behind it. It didn't make any sense to me, so I didn't come. אמר ליה, so he said to him, לימא מר מאי כמר לך. Tell me, what did he say to you? דלמא ידענא טעמא, maybe I'll know the reason for it. אמר ליה, so he said like this: הא דתניא, it's this beraita. In other words, this is the name of Rabbi Yosi, heard it from Rabbi Yosi, that רבי יוסי אומר: כביסתן קודמת לחיי אחרים. That see this this is בהמשך to the Gemara before. The
Gemara before is talking about the importance of being clean. That your hair should be clean, your clothes should be clean, your body should be clean, and it says otherwise it can bring you all kinds of sicknesses, all kinds of things. So he said that cleaning yourself or cleaning your clothes comes before someone else's life. כרום ועלה, where do we get such a where do you get such a thing that your washing your washing your clothes or making yourself clean is more than someone else's life? אמר ליה I'll show you. There's a pasuk. The כתיב it says, ומגרשיהם יהיו להם... It says like this: The Aibershter said the Leviim don't get a share in Eretz Yisrael, but they get cities to live in. In front of the cities for 2,000 amah they had a מגרש. A מגרש is like a an area there for for putting their things and parking their cars, I mean their their wagons, and for for a field. So it says it should be לבהמתם, for their בהמות, וגומר, and it says further, ולחיותם. מאי חיותם? What does it mean for their חיות? אילימא חיה, if it pashut means for the חיות, הלא חיה בכלל בהמה היא. It says לבהמתם already. It says for the בהמות. A חיה is חיה and בהמה go together, so חיה is included in בהמה. אלא מאי חיותם? So what does it mean, their life? חיותא ממש. For sure for their life. פשיטא, עבודה that you have to give them place for their life to live. אלא לאו כביסה, דאיכא צערא דאבווסא, it must be place to wash their clothes. And to wash their clothes you need place for that, why? And that is called chayus. Why? Because the Gemara said before that if you have אבווסא, it means mixed up things are not clean, then it's it could it could affect your life. How's how's the המשך for that that it comes from chayus to that? Because it says they gave a place, what did they give you a place for? To wash your clothes. But they gave you a place when they gave the Leviim a place Why do we say that? They need place to wash their clothes, and that's called chayus, no? That they need place to wash their clothes is obvious that you have place. But that the pasuk when the pasuk refers to it, in which words did the pasuk use? Chayusam. So washing your clothes is called your life. So we see, he said, that someone's washing of clothes can be more important than someone else's life, because it's also his life. And the klal is that your life comes before someone else's life. Zogt di
Gemara vayter, this is all about the Nedarim. At no time חיה meant a wild animal? He said no, it can't be because it says בהמה. It says you have place for your בהמה and for your חיות. Can't mean חיות, because בהמה includes חיות. Zogt di Gemara vayter: ההוא גברא, there was this man, דאדר הנאה דעלמא עליה אי נסיב איתתא עד דתני הלכתא. He wanted to make sure that he's going to learn. So he made a neder that if I marry before I know the halachot, learn halachot, before I become a talmid chacham, I shouldn't be able to have hana'ah from anybody. Which was to prevent him like this he was thinking to himself: Maybe I takeh want to learn, but you know sometimes I'll forget about it and I'll do a shidduch, and then after I marry then it's going to be I won't learn already. So to make sure that he doesn't do that, he made a neder that if I get married before I do halachot, before I learn, before I become a talmid chacham, I shouldn't be able to have hana'ah from anything. רהט בגפי ותוולי ולא מצא למישני. So he ran around with all kinds of, you know, lashon is with a ladder, it's an expression. I guess in the Gemara's time is an expression. He ran around with all his tools and everything. He tried very hard to learn. ולא מצא למישני. ס'איז נישט געגאנגען, he couldn't learn. Nu, but he can't get married, because if he gets married before he learns, then everything is asur. אסריה רב אחא בר רב הונא, so Rav Acha bar Rav Huna came, ושבטיה, and he mixed them up And he said, \"No, your neder doesn't mean anything, you could go get married,\" cuz he wanted to have a way to get get him married, he's not going to get married. Get married. אינסיב, איצי got married. Yeah. So after he got married, דשרקיה טינא, and he like put like a mask on his face, put mud on his face so Rav Chisda shouldn't recognize him, ואמר לקמיה ד, אתא לקמיה דרב חסדא, and Rav Chisda shouldn't know that he's the same guy that made this neder, and he came to Rav Chisda. And he told Rav Chisda what happened here, because what Rav Chisda what what who told this? Rav Acha bar Huna what wanted, he wanted he should be matir neder. But he said it in such a way that he can't be matir neder either. Why? Because you could only matir neder after the neder is chal. Here, then he didn't make a neder now, but if I get married without learning, then the neder will be. So as long as he didn't get married without learning, the neder is not chal. The neder is not chal, he can't be matir neder. So that's why he wanted him to get married, so he told him you could get married, so he got married. Now he came to him, and now he was able to be matir his neder, and say, \"Had I known that like,\" he made a neder because he thought he was going to learn, \"had I known that I won't be able to learn, that כ'האב נישט קיין קאפ, my head doesn't כאפ, I wouldn't have made,\" and he was matir him. Why can't we make a neder with a with a tenai? Yeah, you could, but the neder is not chal till later. אמר רבא, so Rava said, מאן חכים למיעבד כי הא מילתא, who's so smart to do this? אי לאו דרב אחא בר רב הונא, must have been רב אחא בר רב הונא, דגברא רבא, was a great person, דו כאפסט, because he had to get him married. In order to be מתיר, he had to get him married. So he got him married, and as soon as he got him married, now he was able to. What happened to his learning? No, he tried. It seems like from the Gemara he tried hard, he just he couldn't do it, s'iz nisht gegangen. Ba'avayzt oys, he really really wanted, that's why he made this neder, and it didn't help. Zagt di
Gemara another ma'aseh: ההוא נואף דעל לגבי דהאי איתתא. There was this guy that came into a woman, אשת איש, a married woman, and he was going to do an עבירה with her. אתא גברא, so didn't expect the husband to come home, and all of a sudden the husband came home. סליק נואף, so this guy went away, ran away, but he יתיב בכליפא דבבא. So he came and hid behind the door. He had to hide in the closet because and you couldn't get out. בבא בן בוטא? No, not like the other story, yeah. So he went and and hid there. Okay. הוו מחתן תחלי תמן, טעמון, דטעימיה חויא, there was some kind of drink that was, or a certain thing that was laying there, that a snake had drink from it. Now we know, any liquid or any melon, if a snake drinks from it and eats from it, it's poisoned, you can't drink it. So much so that the Rabbanan made an issur, which they took away later, it doesn't apply, but they made lechatchilah an issur, any liquid, water or anything mixed that's left on the table open, uncovered, without someone watching it, is assur, they made an issur. So this glass would have water in it and someone would just turn around and no one would be for a minute, it becomes assur. Why? Because we're afraid maybe snake came and and made it poisoned. No matter if it's of metal or No, no, no, no, that's a different Everyone mixes this up. That has nothing to do with metal, it has nothing to do with the thing that we don't leave in the metal kli overnight. It has nothing to do with this. This is a separate issur, it could be in anything, for because of this. Nowadays it says because there are no real snakes Okay. What's that? I don't know what was that with you. So it's one of those emergencies Alert. Alert? What is it alerting you to? Fort Lauderdale. What about it? I also got Amber Alert. What's Oh, I also got this one. What is that? Green Chevrolet Cruze. Car. Kamistama somebody's Okay. Nu. You with fight. Anyway, so here happened to be there was something there that the husband walked in, he didn't see the guy, wanted to eat that. בעי מריה דביתא למיכל מההוא תחלי, he wanted to eat from that stuff, בלא דעתא דאיתתיה, without asking his wife. His wife probably would have told him, but he didn't see her and he saw the thing there, was going to eat it. אמר ליה ההוא נואף, so this guy, the man who was hiding behind in the closet screamed out to him and he said, לא תיכול מיניה, don't eat it, טעמינהו חויא, snake tasted it. אמר רבא, so Rava said, איתתיה שריא. His wife is mutar. Because there was a now there's a chashash, this guy was there, so a chashash if she was mezaneh with him, but it's mutar. Why? Because אי מיעבד עביד איסורא, if the guy would have done the עבירה already, ניחא ליה דליכול, he would have been happy the guy should eat it, ולימות, so he should die. Yeah. דכתיב, it says, כי נאפו ודם בידיהן. Those who are no'ef have blood on their hands because many times what they do they're mezaneh with an אשת So they should that they killed the they killed the husband, so they shouldn't have a problem. So since he was, he went out of his clo- he gave up his hiding place in order to protect the guy from dying, a siman that he didn't do the aveirah. Like a נואף? A נואף. B'emet a guy was מזנה with a with a married woman de'oraita. That's a that's a We don't have a word for that. An adulterer? An adulterer, I guess, would be the word for it. The English word. פרעגט די Gemara פשיטא. Obviously like that. I mean, it makes a lot of sense. You don't even need to be a chiddush. So the Gemara answers, \"No, it's a chiddush, cuz מהו דתימא, I would think איסורא עבד, b'emet he did do the aveirah. והאי דאמר ליה, why did he tell him this, to protect his life? דניחא ליה דלא לימות בעל. He wanted the husband shouldn't die, דתהוי אינשא עליה, מים גנובים ימתקו ולחם סתרים ינעם. Says that stolen waters tastes good, stolen bread is tastes better. So if she's an אשת איש, the taavah is greater, so maybe farkert, he wanted her not him not to die, so she'll be an אשת איש, and now ka mashma lan, that's why he said no, no, baal taavah. Baal taavah. Ka mashma lan, that's why he told us, don't think no, that's not, that's so far we don't go. And we assume that he probably didn't do the aveirah, and the reason he wanted to save him is because he didn't do the. Had he done the aveirah, he would have wanted him to die. Vayter. זאגט די Gemara ווייטער, נו, א נייע masechta we're learning. Another masechta. Ah? Another masechta. Yeah, yeah. Not really a whole Gemara. זאגט די Gemara a beraita. תניא, it says in a beraita, \"זה קלי ואנוהו\", this is my God, and I will beautify Him. אנוהו לפניו במצות, אנוה or אנוהו, it says. אנוה, אנוה, I have to make myself nice to Hashem with mitzvot. Lemashel, he says, עשה לפניו סוכה נאה, let me make a nice סוכה, לולב נאה, a nice לולב, ציצית נאה, a nice ציצית, אכתוב לפניו ספר תורה נאה, I'll make a nice ספר תורה, ואכרכנו בשיראין נאין, and I'm going to wrap it with with silk with silk a nice silk cover mantle on the Sefer Torah, that's to make this nice. Now, this
thing is a whole thing, remember when the Rebbe spoke about נוי סוכה, how come Chabad doesn't have נוי סוכה? So the Rebbe said, lichora, it falls into the category עשה לפניו סוכה נאה. So he said that when do we have something נוי in the mitzvah, if the mitzvah itself becomes nicer, but to take things from the outside and add to it, that's not the sukkah is not nicer, the decoration is nice. The sukkah is not nicer. The only she'eilah from this Gemara, it says שיראין נאין, even to cover the Sefer Torah. So, lichora, that's not the Maybe you could say write a nicer כתב, have better parchment, but but here the Gemara says שיראין נאין. So the vort is, in a the Rebbe didn't ask that she'eilah, I'm asking the she'eilah on that sichah, in a different place, the Rebbe is masbir that there is a sevara by a Sefer Torah that all these side things are part of the Sefer Torah itself, just like they have it like a geder like a גליון, just like the גליון of the Sefer Torah, it doesn't say anything on it, it's not that's part of the Sefer Torah. So the the the gartel is part of the Sefer Torah, and could be the cover is part of the Sefer Torah. The wall is part of the sukkah. The wall, yeah. If you make a nicer wall, but not to add something to the wall, that's the whole vort. It still doesn't have the same kedushah as the Sefer Torah. If you put על פי דין, they have a kedushah, right, but the Rebbe said See, the Rebbe asked the she'eilah, how do we say that it's not, it doesn't add to the mitzvah? In the Gemara, we find the תנאים ואמוראים all had נוי סוכה. So he says, by them, since they didn't care about gashmiyut, they were so great, so the niceness was batel to the Sukkah. That itself didn't mean anything. It was the Sukkah became nice. But to us, if you have a nice picture, the picture is nice, makes the Sukkah nice? It's the Sukkah The picture is nice, so the picture doesn't make the Sukkah, so then we don't do it. And he gave an example, in halachah, it's in Shulchan Aruch, it says, בנוגע סוכה, taken from the Gemara, that what happens if the sechach from the floor is more than twenty אמה? Pasul. So there's an etzah, take straw and things and put it on the floor, make the floor a little bit higher, so now it's good. Then the she'eilah, what happens if I want to put down pillows and things like that? Doesn't work. What's the difference, you're still become higher? Because pillows and covers from a bed, you're not mevatel to the Sukkah, you're not mevatel to the floor. So it's an inyan for itself, so the floor starts from the floor, this is not part of the Sukkah. Straw, these things, you're mevatel. So the Rebbe says, על דרך זה, to us, a metziut of a picture and a nice piece a nice, I know, fruit that hangs, that's nice. How does the Sukkah become nice? So if you're bemadregah when all this is nothing in itself, who cares about the niceness of the gashmiyut, so then it's only the Sukkah that's becoming nice, it's enhancing the Sukkah. Paper chains? Ah? That's not, that's not the נוי of a Sukkah. Good, that's a zaytige zach. That's a chasidishe zach. Ah? I have to go down, there are people waiting for me. Okay, go ahead, get get get. Yeah, yeah, Yishar koach, hatzlachah. Paper chains. Yeah. Yeah, paper chains. Vos, how does the Sukkah become nice with that? Because it's so nothing. So? So... No, but the reason No, it's not. The reason, why would they takeh put it up? Be'emet, because it has a color, it's green... This is nice. It's not that the Sukkah becomes nice. No, you have to make a Not if you make nice nice walls, nice sechach, that, yeah, but to add something to it, חיצוניות, this is all חיצוניות'דיקע זאכן that That's a חילוק בכלל. This whole goes lishitaso of Chabad. All these חיצוניות'דיקע things don't mean. Why in Chabad don't we wear an עטרה on the טלית? Nice עטרה. It makes the טלית nice. That's another, this they say they sold they sold at that time. That's some say that. He writes it, ריזשין and whatever. I'm saying, why aren't we makpid, not that we're against it, why aren't we makpid to have a silver thing for this etrog? לכאורה, זה א-לי ואנוהו מצוות. The Rebbe had The Rebbe was mekayem I know hidur mitzvah. A wooden A paper box. How do you say? By menorah, we davka we By Chanukah licht? Yeah, it's red Because it's probably part It's probably part of the mitzvah. None of None of had paper boxes. Huh? None of had paper boxes. Why? Everyone has. Huh? Yeah. No, you don't have to be. The velt everybody who has anything comes with a silver Pushka, etrog pushka, by us I mean, yeah, there are some people, nothing wrong with it, but there's no diuk in it. Why is no diuk? Lichorah should be a diuk, should be davka. Because of this reason, because it's it's it's kol tzaddike zachen. So I'm saying שיריים נאים is because around the Sefer Torah, this is part of קדושת ספר תורה. Okay, לאמיר גיין ווייטער. Huh? But כלים for שבת, כלים for Shabbos is not the same inyan, right? כלים you use for Shabbos. No, that's not זה א-לי ואנוהו במצות. Oh, that's express, like
it says Pesach you should put on nice כלים on the table. That's a different story. That itself is showing you feel cherut. It's not like enhancing the mitzvah. That's Pesach. And Shabbos also, not exactly the same, but something like it. לאמיר גיין ווייטער. הרי עלי לשלח פרע. If someone says the lashon, I take upon myself לשלח פרע, what's לשלח פרע mean? הרי זה נזיר. That makes him a nazir. Why? Because לשלח פרע means to grow hair. So a nazir has long hair. פרע The גמרא, ומאי דהאי שילוח ריבוייה הוא, how do you know that this word שילוח means to grow? The Gemara answers, דכתיב it says, שלחיך פרדס רמונים. Okay. What does this mean? That the Aibershter is saying that your way you're growing is like a a garden grows pomegranates. So they see And which word is the word שילוח? שלחיך. So that שלח is growing. פרע The גמרא, אימא מידי דעבורי, maybe it means to take away? Opposite. Because we also find שילוח means that, דכתיב it says, ומשלח מים על פני חוצות. You send away water on the outside. שלח הקל? Yeah. But here we see it means taking something, the water, and sending it, taking it away. So the Gemara says here it's different. תנא, דתנא פרע פרע יליף. Okay, it's a gezeirah shavah. כתיב הכא, קדש יהיה גדל פרע שער ראשו. It says by the נזיר that holy shall be the growth, and here it says גדל, the growth of his hair, of his head, should be holy. וכתיב התם גבי הדיוט, and by an הדיוט כהן הדיוט it also says, ופרע לא ישלחו. What does that mean? You shouldn't grow. So here we see that in the case of he says לשלח פרע means to grow your hair. איבעית אימא, or you could answer, האי משלח מים נמי ריבויי הוא. The קשיא was we find משלח מים sending water, it means to send away. That's also growing. The תרגום טייטשט, רב יוסף טייטשט, דמשקן למיעל פירא. ברוביא. משלח מים על פני חוצות means you're sending water to make things grow. You're sending water to the fields to make it grow, so שילוח is also a concept of growing. זאגט די גמרא ווייטער, תניא it says in a beraita: אמר ימין הרי זו שבועה. If someone says ימין that I'll do this and this, right hand I'll do this and this, that's a שבועה. The גמרא, מאי טעמא? What's the reason? Why is the ימין שבועה? Even if he's a lefty. What it means? I don't know, maybe his left His left is really right. מאי טעמא? לאו משום isn't it דכתיב it says, וירם ימינו ושמאלו אל השמים וישבע בחי העולם. Because it says, he picked up his right hand and his left hand to shamayim, and he swore in the life חי העולם. So what do we see from here? That ימינה has to do with with shevuah. So the So the But the word yamin itself doesn't mean shevuah. The pasuk mentions yamin, and he picked up his right, and he swore. We put it together. So the Gemara says, אמינא, I'll tell you, לא. משום ימין גופיה איקרי שבועה. The word yamin means shevuah. תניא it says, מניין לאומר ימין שהוא שבועה? How do you know if someone says the word ימין it's a שבועה? שנאמר it says, נשבע ה׳ בימינו. בימינו. Hashem swore with his right hand, it means he So it's not he picked up right hand and he did shevuah, that itself is. ומניין לאומר שמאל שהוא שבועה? How do you know that if he says left is also a shevuah? שנאמר it says, and the end of that pasuk, ובזרוע עזו. He swore with his right hand and with the zeroa, the hand of his strength. Now what's the zeroa? Must be the left hand, 'cause the right hand he mentioned already before. זרוע doesn't mean left, but in this case זרוע must mean left. And it goes בהמשך to he swore with his right and his left. He said, \"Ah, that left hand is also a shevuah?\" Why does it have to mean left, because it already said right in the in the... Yeah, it can't mean right because it says already yamin. Could be repetition. No, why would it be? In Chassidut we
had somewhere that right or not, how we how we decide, how? Hashem's hand that had to be from it's the right, but a different inyan in it. Sometimes twice yamin. Yeah, ימינך השם נאדרי בכח ימינך השם תרעץ אויב, so that's Yeah, that's twice.
That's חסד שבחסד וגבורה שבחסד. That's Mishnah, right. Very well. Which...
