Samson’s Nazir and Permission to Become Tamei

hobn gelernt. תניא רבי יהודה אומר, yeah, רבי יהודה אומר, Rabbi Yehuda says, נזיר שמשון מותר לטמא למתים. If someone takes upon himself to become a nazir, but he specifies nazir like Shimshon I give it, you're allowed to become tamei. Normally a nazir can't drink wine, can't cut his hair, and can't become tamei to a met, you're allowed to. What was different by him? It's a special type of nezirus. שכן מצינו בשמשון שנטמא, because we find Shimshon himself became tamei. And how? Huh? Left and right. Well, we'll see, but that's a pshat. From all these stories, the Gemara says, it's no re'aya. We know by a kabbalah, but not that we... we'll see. רבי שמעון אומר, Reb Shimon says, האומר נזיר שמשון, if someone says, \"I accept upon myself נזיר שמשון,\" לא אמר כלום. It's nothing. שלא מצינו בשמשון שיצתה נזירות מפיו. We never we don't find that Shimshon made himself into a nazir. You only can make yourself into a nazir. Not the malach... We'll see, not a malach. Tanya, we learned, אמר רבי שמעון הצדיק, Reb Shimon HaTzaddik said, Okay, bikhlal this is only only a father, האב מאזיר את בנו בנזיר, not a malach and not a mother. That's why the famous kashya is בנוגע שמואל. שמואל הנביא נזיר היה, it says. Why? Because his mother said, ומורה לא יעלה על ראשו. So his mother is being said became a nazir. So all the mefarshim ask, Radak and everyone ask, how can she make him a nazir? It's a clear din that a father could make a nazir a child, small child, but not a mother. Probably was maskim to his wife. It's just like Huh? Probably Elkanah was maskim. Different mefarshim. Like גירות, no? Huh? It's just like if we're מגייר, when you're מגייר, you really take it on when you become bar mitzvah. If you don't change it. Okay, so the Rebbe connects it to this, a גר קטן, the beit din, the same thing, it's a whole biur, but anyway. We were talking about Shimshon. A mother can't take her child and bring him to the בית המ... to Shiloh without the father's permission either. So, she got that from... It doesn't say that. What with you? הפסוק it doesn't say. Couldn't she take away... Anyway, a lot of mefarshim answer that, it's... Why isn't it pashut that it comes by middah k'neged middah that he just doesn't... Huh? What do we find sixteen months נזירות? Where do we find sixteen months נזירות? We don't make kal vachomer. I mean a גזירה שוה. גזירה שוה, yes. Anyway, Tanya, we learned a ברייתא, אמר רבי שמעון הצדיק, Reb Shimon HaTzaddik said, מימי לא אכלתי אשם נזיר טמא. I never ate from an אשם of a נזיר טמא. See, there's two things. When a נזיר, a person becomes a נזיר, when he finishes his day, time of נזירות, there's korbanot he brings, and one of them is a נזיר, is a אשם. But there's another type, if in middle of the נזירות he becomes טמא. הפסוק says he's sitting in a house and someone dies, and he's in the same house, it's not his fault, so he has to bring a קרבן, אשם נזיר טמא, and he has to start his days of נזירות over again. So he says, \"I never ate from an אשם נזיר טמא because I didn't want to.\" And the way the Ran explains, the Rosh explains, which is not really Rosh, whatever, explains that the reason is because he felt that since he made himself a נזיר and now it prolonged his נזירות, so for sure the guy had חרטה, and the guy really didn't want, so the whole נדר is a שוואכע. Yeah, so he didn't want to eat from it.

The Handsome Nazir’s Inner Dialogue

חוץ מאדם אחד, except one person that from him I wanted, I ate, שבא אלי, a person came מן הדרום, from the Darom. If, huh? Beautiful hair. יפה עינים, beautiful eyes, טוב ראי, looked good, קווצותיו סדורות לו תלתלים, he had beautiful long braids, locks, dreadlocks, okay. אמרתי לו, I said to him, בני, מה ראית לשחת שער נאה זה, and he was going to, he was a nazir, which means he's going to have to cut this hair, and beautiful hair, he said, \"Why did you decide to cut your hair, to make a neder to cut?\" אמר לי, he said like this, רועה הייתי לאבא בעירי, \"I was a shepherd for my father in my city, והלכתי למלאות מים מן המעיין, and I went went to draw water from the well, ונסתכלתי בבבואה שלי, and my I had reflection into the water, and I saw how beautiful I look. ופחז יצרי עלי, so my yetzer hara got the better of me. So, 'Ah, you're so beautiful, now go do whatever you want to do.' וביקש לטורדני מן העולם, the yetzer hara wanted to throw me away from the world. אמרתי לו, I said to him, ריקה, idiot, di otem iz gar, well why you think should be big? בעולם שאינו שלך, you're in a world and you think you look nice. What are you anyway, it's not your world. סופך להיות רמה ותולעה, the end will be anyway, what's going to be the end with you? You'll be worms, go to the earth and you'll be... So, who's talking to who? He's talking to himself, he is talking to himself. Ha-avodah, and all what made him look so nice was his hair. Ha-avodah means, 'I swear שאגלחך לשמים, that I'm going to cut you off, but לשם שמים, that way I'll do it for a mitzvah.' עמדתי, and that's why he became a nazir, so now he'll have to cut his hair.\" hair, and it'll be a mitzvah. עמדתי, so he said, Shimon HaTzadik said, \"I got up ונשקתיו על רישיה, I kissed him on his head. אמרתי ליה, I said, כמוך ירבו נזירים בישראל.\" Guys like you, ah, nezirim like you should be a lot. So, just like by a neder, that's like a chet, and it's not such a good thing? Not in this case, no, this guy was good. Yeah, he did it because he had to do it. Because a lot of nezirim come on when lechatchilah, when they make themselves nezirim, they have good intentions. It's when it gets prolonged because they became tamei. How do you know this guy had the same attitude when he became tamei? It looks like he took from him a korban, he ate from his korban when he became tamei. So, that's what I'm dos freg ich. Stam? And still the guy was happy. He became t tumah and was happy? In other words, he didn't What's the whole problem? The whole problem is when you become tamei, you feel bad why you made nezirus, you have charatah. Yeah. But by this, he didn't have charatah. He was happy the whole time. In other words, this happened, this maaseh, where he said Yeah, it could it happened by But this happened by by when he became tamei, not by not by the original Yeah, yeah. Not the not the regular. So,

Tumah’s Effect on the Duration of Nazirut

what's the problem with tumah? There's a simple question they're going to want to answer. The tumah with a nazir, what does it cause? Because when it's He took a nezirus, it's 30 days a person takes. After 25 days he becomes tamei, he has to wait till he becomes tahor, and then he starts over the 30 days. So now his nezirus is going to be for two months instead of one month. So he usually feels bad, he has charatah. עליך הכתוב אומר, he said, because of you the pasuk says, איש כי יפליא לנדור נדר נזיר להזיר להשם. The pasuk, if a person will make a neder to become a nazir to our der Eibershter, you did it for the sake of der Eibershter. And then די גמרא פרעגט, ושמשון לאו נזיר הוא? הוי? Shimshon was not We said Shimshon is not a nazir. וכתיב, it says, כי נזיר אלקים יהיה הנער. A malach came to Manoach and his wife and said that he should be a nazir. So די Gemara says, התם מלאך הוא דקאמר. The malach said it, but he didn't make a nezirus. And anyway, we said before that he became tamei to מתים. פרעגט די גמרא, מנלן דאיטמי למתים? Where do we see that he became tamei to מתים? אילימא, if you want to say, וכתיב, it says, בלחי החמור הכיתי אלף איש. Took a lechi, the jaw of a donkey, and he killed 1,000 people. You know, if he killed 1,000 people, he became tamei. So די Gemara says, דילמא גרויי גרי בהו ולא נגע בהו. Goyim. אה? Goyim are metamei, but sure. Maybe only the lechi hit them. Goyim are metamei. It's not מטמא באוהל, but מטמא במגע. So if he touched them, he became tamei. But he touched them with the thing. So די Gemara says, could maybe דילמא גרויי גרי בהו ולא נגע בהו. Maybe he did it, but he didn't touch, he was like cutting with it, using it, but he didn't touch. He hit him with it. Yeah. Or maybe if he hit them, they weren't dead yet. And די Gemara says, אלא מהכא, there's another pasuk. It says, ויך מהם שלושים איש, he killed 30 people, ויקח את חליצותם, and then he took off their shirts. So obviously he touched them. די Gemara says, דילמא שלחינהו ברישא והדר קטלינהו. Maybe first he took off their shirts, and then he killed them. די Gemara says, no, ויך ויקח, see it says ויך and then ויקח. First he killed, then he took. די גמרא, דילמא גוססין שוינהו, maybe he didn't kill him ממש, he hit him and they were almost dying. They were a goner. And he took off, uh? They were a goner, they're under Yeah, yeah, they were almost like they were they were dying. They were a גוסס. But before they died, he took it off, so he didn't become tamei. אלא, so how do we know he became tamei? גמרא גמירא לה, we have a kabbalah, that's what we know. Hit him twice. What do you mean? Once to knock him out, then take the shirt, then hit him and kill him. Well, if he hit him again, then he's tamei. But then he didn't touch him. No, he didn't touch him, because he hit him with the Like they're גוסס, why should he Why? When David, when David hit Goliath, maybe he was only knocked out until he took his sword and chopped off his head. Who said he died from the Who said he died? Who said he chopped off his head? From heaven. Because he jumped up with the With the כף הקלע? Maybe he wasn't dead until he chopped his head off. With an axe, but he hit him in the ankle. Says he killed him, no? Chopped him with the ankle. Hit him in the ankle, and he fell down, that was it. Hang on, no, the temple. Moshe Rabbeinu It's Moshe by Og. By Og, yeah. But he hit him in the temple, it says. What's he doing with the shirts? What's he doing with the shirts? Money, money, money. Shirts is money, expensive shirts. The value, bro. זאגט די גמרא ווייטער, נזיר עולם היכא כתיבא? If a person accepts upon himself to be a נזיר עולם forever, there's a special דין that he is allowed to cut off his hair every 12 months. If a person takes upon himself to be a נזיר for 5 years, he can't cut his hair for 5 years. But if he takes upon himself to be a נזיר עולם, there's a special דין he could cut off his hair every 12 months.

Laws of the Eternal Nazir (Nazir Olam)

פרעגט די גמרא, נזיר עולם היכא כתיב? Where does it say in the Torah that a נזיר עולם could could take cut off his hair? תניא, we learned, רבי אומר, it says, a baraisa, Rabbi says, אבשלום נזיר עולם היה. Avshalom was a נזיר עולם. That's why he had long hair. שנאמר, it says, ויהי מקץ ארבעים שנה, it was after 40 years, ויאמר אבשלום אל אביו, אבשלום said to his father, כי נדר נדר עבדך בשבתי בגשור בארם. I made a neder when I was a certain place. Now I want to go there, ואשלם את נדרי, and I want to משלם my neder. Finish off my neder. ומגלח אחד לי\"ב חודש, and he, אבשלום, cut his hair every 12 months. How do you know that? שנאמר, it says, ויהי מקץ ימים לימים אשר יגלח, from time, day to day, time which is he's cut it. Now what does that mean, ימים? So ימים, the day would, here it means years. Why? ילף ימים ימים מבתי ערי חומה. By the houses of ערי חומה it says ימים תהיה גאולתו. מה להלן י\"ב חודש, there it says, the din by it is like this: if you sell a house in a city which has a wall around it, it's a special din. It doesn't come back b'yovel. Every land, everything comes b'yovel. And there's another din: you could redeem it only the first 12 months, the first year. Different than a regular land. If a regular house simply or land, adraba, you cannot redeem it the first two years, could only redeem it after the two years, and then if you didn't, it comes back b'yovel. Here, you could only redeem it the first year, and if not, it's מוחלט and that's it, it doesn't come back. But there, how do, it doesn't say 12 months, there it says ימים, and ימים means 12 months. אף כאן, here when it says ימים, it means 12 months.

Interpreting “Yomim” as Twelve Months

What does the wall, how does the wall change that? No, it makes a higher level of kedushah. Mishnah says עשר קדושות הן, there are 10 levels of kedushah in Eretz Yisrael, and בתי ערי חומה is more than a regular city. You have to get it in the 12 months, and if you don't get it... I don't know why it has to do with with being מוחלט that the house you can't get. I don't know if there is a reason for it. There is 12 months, but in a year like this with an ibur year, it would be 13 months, because the Gemara there says שנה תמימה, the Gemara says שנה is 12 months and תמים, תמים is דרבה שנת העיבור, א חודש העיבור. עיבור year like this, so it's 13 months. Certain things it's not, למשל אבילות is 12 months, so if it's a עיבור year, it's only 12 months anyway. In other words, אבילות usually finishes by the first Yahrzeit, in an עיבור year it finishes a month before, if the middle was an עיבור year. What do you do? You learn Torah, you do mitzvot. No, it's not אבילות, it's not, okay. Yeah. But then the Gemara asks: הני ארבעים שנה מאי עבידתייהו?

The Forty-Year Timeline and Avshalom’s Revolt

What does it mean it was the end of 40 years? 40 years from when? So רבי נהוראי אומר משום רבי יהושע, no he said, he says in the name of רבי יהושע, לקץ מ' שנה ששאלו להם מלך, it was the end of the 40 years when the Yidden asked for a king. And תנא, we learned: עשר שנה ששאלו להם מלך ושנת עשר לשמואל הרמתי. It was the 10th year of Shmuel, and according to that חשבון it comes out that, see, when did when did Avshalom do this? He went this and he tricked his father and then really went to make a revolt against his father. This was, what made him decide to do that? It was 37 years after he became king, David. He made a חשבון, and he knew that David's kingship will be 40 years. He messed up. It was really, he thought it meant 40 years from when the Yidden asked for a king. And and after asking for a king, Shaul HaMelech was a king for two and a half years, for three years. So ממילא, when the 40 years were up, he thought already David's time is up. So now he thought he's going to כאפ אריין and become king. He made a mistake, because really it meant David HaMelech's time, and David HaMelech still had three years, so because he was 47 years and 43 years, seven in Chevron, okay. And what would have happened if if he didn't make a mistake, imagine? He's still wrong. He would come and take over later, he would try to take over later. And then there was Shlomo. Then he wouldn't take over anyway. Oh, it was supposed to be Shlomo. זאגט די Gemara ווייטער, תניא, שטייט אין א ברייתא:

Rabbi Elazar Kappar on Nazir as a Sinner

רבי אלעזר הקפר ברבי אומר, Rabbi Elazar HaKappar Beribbi says: מה תלמוד לומר, what is the peshat when it says by a נזיר, וכפר עליו מאשר חטא על הנפש? Should have a chatat, kaparah, that he sinned with a nefesh. וכי באיזה נפש חטא? Which nefesh did he sin? זה, it's a, this guy. אלא שציער נפשו מן היין, his own nefesh. The fact that he made a neder and he can't drink wine, he's called a chotei. Kal vachomer, now we make a kal vachomer. מה זה שלא ציער עצמו אלא מן היין נקרא חוטא, what that this guy which only holds himself back from wine is called a sinner, המצער עצמו מכל דבר, על אחת כמה וכמה. Someone who makes מצער from everything, doesn't he have a... למשל a guy who fasts, is certainly called a chotei. And the reason the Gemara says, why is he called a chotei? Because if he doesn't eat, he fasts, so he gets weak, and a talmid chacham is supposed to be healthy, he's supposed to be able to learn, so it's called a chet. על פי חסידות it's understood more, because you have to be מברר the birurim, you can't if you don't eat. health reasons? Ah? If he does it for health reasons, he thinks it's healthy for him. Then good, that's no problem. You should only be healthy. No, it's only for people who it's not ראוי for them to fast. Okay, but the Gemara brings, it's not here, it's in a different place the Gemara says fast, but it's all connected, talmid chacham shouldn't fast. ובכלל, בחסידות we know that a person should מברר the birurim, so you should eat everything. We

Iggeret HaTeshuvah: Fasting vs. Tzedakah

spoke about this another day here. Every time I bring up the Iggeret HaTeshuvah, we come back noch einmal to the same thing. Same thing, yeah, that's exactly. So what's wrong? What's the matter with Iggeret HaTeshuvah? It's not כדאי to What's what's wrong with Iggeret He asked for ta'anit... He asked for ta'anit? No, he says you should fast three times, but then he himself says nowadays it's hard to fast, you should give tzedakah instead. That's what he says there. He says you should give tzedakah for every every day you give חי גאפ, 18 or whatever the cheshbon of it is for every day, instead of that, because you can't fast, be'emet you should fast, and it's not He writes clearly there, fasting is not teshuvah. No, fasting is not teshuvah. Right, right. So he says you should fast, but he says nowadays that we're weak, and he brings this Gemara as it's hard to fast, and a talmid chacham who fasts is called a chotei, mimela, instead, we should give tzedakah for The Iggeret HaTeshuvah was written for talmidei chachamim. And he still still, and even these talmidei chachamim can't fast. Farkert, they can't fast, therefore you should give tzedakah. And he says אגם it will come out you'll give more than a 20%, and the Gemara says אל יבזבז יותר... כל המבזבז אל יבזבז יותר מחומש, he says that's only if you're giving it לשם מצות צדקה, but if you're giving it for your רפואת הנפש, you're doing this as a refuah, a רוחניות'דיקע רפואה. Just like a person who is sick will say, I can't spend for doctors more than 20%, the rest I can't. It's narishkayt, same thing here, it's a doctor, it's a רוחניות'דיקע זאך. But the only she'eilah then, what happens if a guy is weak and he can't fast, and he's poor and he doesn't have money, what do you do? The answer is: don't sin. There's no choice then. Can't do any aveirot. How does the cheshbon go with the 84 fasts of the Ari z"l and the 18? How does it, I mean with tzedakah? Well, cause the Magen Avraham says, חי גאפ, that amount of money is is חי גדולים, גדולים פולין, is is for it, for every day of of, yeah. So so for the 84 that you can do, or the half a day fast that He says never to fast half days. Two half days make up one day, and you could fast the short days of of the winter. Anyway, פרעגט די גמרא:

Kaparah for a Tamei Nazir Explained

והא בנזיר טמא כתיב. This pasuk where it says that you have a kaparah for the nefesh that you sinned, and we said why, because you became a nazir, but the pasuk is not talking about a regular nazir, the pasuk may be talking of a nazir who became tamei? ורבנן אפילו נזיר טהור, we just said that even a regular nazir, tahor, normal nazir, is called a chet. So the Gemara says: קסבר רבי אלעזר הקפר, רבי אלעזר הקפר holds, נזיר טהור נמי חוטא הוא. He says takka a regular nazir is also called a chotei. אי, then why did the Torah... והאי דתנא בנזיר טמא כתיב, so why does the Torah write this by a nazir tamei? הואיל ושנה בחטא. He has two chata'im: number chet is that he became a nazir, and number two, that he that he that he became tamei. So he has to have two kaparot. Zogt di Gemara vayter: תנו רבנן... They said about a about a neder also. So a person person makes a neder also you have a chata, is that also that? A neder if you make a neder from things. But it's it's a special thing It's a chata and it's become a nazir when you and you have a big Like the nazir of Yerushalayim. Because he had a big aveirah, so that's why he became a nazir. And then in our generation He was Sha'ar Yashuv's father. Yeah. Goren's father-in-law. Yeah. Rav Kook was machazir him bitshuvah. What? The nazir of Yerushalayim. No. Nazir of Yerushalayim is Goren's father-in-law. Shlomo Goren's father-in-law, and Sha'ar Yashuv Kohen's father. What was his name? His name was David Ramchal Oh, they both have yahrzeit? Oh. Do we have 20 people? I doubt it. Six and six. Six and Six makes six. Huh? David Shapira has yahrzeit and... You haven't heard of this story? When the First World War broke out, Rav Kook was was in Europe to collect money for Eretz Yisrael, like he always did. He couldn't get back, he was stuck there for years. So he went to a place, he went to some place or some shul, and he saw three chevra learning Gemara on Shabbos, smoking cigars. And they

Learning prowess and dedication

knew how to learn terrific, they were but they really knew how to learn. So he said: Vos macht ir, narish?? They said, Rabbi, they said to him, I'm going to get a PhD now from Heidelberg. The Rabbis, they can't I have kushyos nobody can answer. He says, \"Ask your kushyos.\" He spoke to him for like, I don't know, twelve hours straight, and he started speaking, speaking, speaking to him. And then the guy had tremendous charatah. Kook brought him back. He had such a charatah, he became a nazir. He said, he said, Rav Kook said, \"I got stuck in Europe to be podeh his nefesh. That's why, that's why it happened.\" What a story. Still got time, but we got to prepare the minyanim. Can't daven till 35. But how are we going to work this out? Six. We have to make six and six. Okay. Yeah, we'll have to work out the minyan. Okay. It's like a What's his name? Dr.
