Rav Asi on the Four Brains and the Temple

holding here in the middle of למד אלף. Rav Asi. We are holding here, bad news. And that we learned already. Okay, we are holding here. Rav Asi. We learned Rav Asi, we started already. No, we are... Okay, yeah, yeah. אמר Rav Asi, Rav Asi said: ארבעה קבין מוח, this is still talking about the חורבן בית המקדש, in the beginning of למד אלף עמוד א׳. Four קבין of brains נמצאו על אבן אחת was found on one stone that they knocked out. Ulla... Human brains or human? Human brains, human brains. Ulla אמר, Ulla says: תשעה קבין, nine קבין. אמר Rav Kahana, Rav Kahana said, ואיתימא, some say, רב שילא בר מרי said: מאי קרא? Which pasuk tells us that? There's a pasuk that says: בת בבל השדודה, daughter of בבל, who is the the robber, אשרי שישלם, Hashem will pay you back, אשרי שיאחז ונפץ את עולליך אל הסלע, that you grabbed and you hit the the babies on the rock. I heard this from one of my teachers when I was a kid. He was in Holocaust. He says he remembers what they did. Didn't want to waste any bullets on the babies, so what they did, what they would do is they would stand in a line and take the babies and hand one to another and they would just bang it, head on the stone. Nein, das is Der Oybershter vet batsaln. Der Oybershter will pay back. Okay, then there's a pasuk in איכה, it says: בני ציון היקרים המסולאים בפז. Talking about what happened to the the the children of Zion, the the this precious children of Zion which are covered with פז. פז is in English, Yiddish it's called fein gold. Precious stone, it says. No, it's a precious stone? No, פז is פז is is a kind of gold, but it's a special kind of, maybe it's 24-karat gold, and it's called fein gold. So the

Gemara Explains the Gold Covering of Children

Gemara asks: מאי מסולאים בפז? What does it mean that these children of Yerushalayim, of Zion, were covered with gold? אילימא דהוו מחפי, if you say peshat it means that they were dressed up and they had gold jewelry on them, it's not true. והאמר דבי רבי שילא, it says in the בית מדרש of Rabbi Shila: תרתי מסקלי דאיסתירא פיזא נחתו לעלמא, two measurements of the special of of סלע of פיין גאלד, of the special gold came to the world, חדא ברומי, one, that was half of it is in Rome, וחדא, the other half is spread out in the whole world. But Yerushalayim was not known for special having special gold, so you can't say that the children of Yerushalayim wore gold. אלא שהיו מגנים את הפז ביופיין, they were so beautiful that gold would be embarrassed in front of the beauty of the children. Then he says, what did they do? בעיקרא חשיבי דרומי נקטי בלייני דגושפנקא. In the beginning, the the officers of Rome would take בלייני דגושפנקא, these are beautiful pictures or of of people, ומשמשי ערסייהו, when they would have intimacy, they would put it there, so the the women should have children beautiful like those pictures. מכאן ואילך, after they got they they they conquered, they captured the children of Yerushalayim who are so beautiful, מייתי בני ישראל, they would bring the Yiddishe children, ואסרי בכרעי דפוריא, they tie them to the beds, ומשמשי, and they would do that so the the people should look at the children בשעת מעשה. אמר ליה חד לחבריה, one of the children said to his friend: הא היכא כתיבא? He knows there are all kinds of curses, it says in the Torah. Where does this curse, such a curse like this mentioned? אמר ליה, he said to him, there's a pasuk that says after the Torah gives all the curses, it says: גם כל חלי וכל מכה אשר לא כתוב בספר התורה הזאת, you know you'll get more sicknesses and more problems, more plagues which is not even written in the Torah. Says this is it, one of those that's tucked in not written. אמר, so he asked him: כמה מרחקית מדוכתא דפלן? He told him where he's holding in Chumash. How far am I from this pasuk that you had mentioned? אמר ליה: עניג, פוסתא ופלגא, about a page and a half. אמר ליה, so he said to him: אי מטי לגבאי, had I come to that פסוק, לא איצטריכא, I wouldn't have had to ask you. I would have understood myself that this is one of those קללות that are not even written in the Torah. What does he mean to say? That if he had come to it, for sure. I mean, so he asked him, he told him. No, he wasn't, not because he didn't realize the connection, he just didn't know such a thing existed, he thought there was all that it says. This pasuk in Torah that says everything that's not mentioned. Yeah, that more things which are not mentioned. He didn't know that Torah said that. Had he known, he wouldn't have asked the question. אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל... It was probably not mentioned because it was so vile. Probably more things also, yeah. Sometimes when even in Yiddish it became an expression, even nowadays people don't use it because they don't speak Yiddish, that if you want to say is it such a terrible thing, you say, ah, this is a מכה שלא כתובה בתורה. That's a curse in the Word, I'm saying. A מכה, a plague that's not even written in the Torah, because the Torah wants to say how terrible it is, it's not even written. So, רב יהודה said in the name of שמואל משום רבן שמעון בן גמליאל... All right, yeah. מאי דכתיב, what is the pshat in the pasuk, as eight? Do you have to go? It's going to be short? At least so far we're short. עיני עוללה לנפשי מכל בנות עירי. My, my eyes became like hurting or from because of what happened to the בנות עירי, the daughters of my city. What does that mean? So he says like this: ארבע מאות בתי כנסיות היו בכרך ביתר, there were 400 שולs in the city of ביתר. ובכל אחת ואחת, each one of these שולs, היו בה ת' מלמדי תינוקות, each שול had 400 teachers. ובכל אחד ואחד הוו ליה ת' תינוקות של בית רבן, and each teacher had 400 students, children. How much is that? This is 400 times 400 times 400. וכשהיה אויב נכנס, when, earlier time, when the enemy would enter לשם, there, היו דוקרין אותם בקונטריהן. Their zechut of their learning was so strong that they would poke the enemy with their with their pens, with their and that would chase them away. וכשגבר אויב, but when the enemy got strong, which means when the Yidden sinned and then the enemies took over, ולכדום, they conquered them, כרכום בספריהם, they wrapped them around with their own ספרים, והציתום באש, and they put fire on them. This is not the season of this is Tisha B'Av season, not Purim. תנו רבנן, the Rabbanan have learned: מעשה ברבי יהושע בן חנניה Yeah, ונהפוך הוא, you have to do that, yeah. Story with רבי יהושע בן חנניה שהלך לכרך גדול שברומי, he went to a big city of Rome. אמרו לו, and they told him, some time of the churban: תינוק אחד יש בבית האסורים, there is one boy in jail, יפה עיניים, beautiful eyes, טוב ראי, looks handsome, וקווצותיו סדורות לו תלתלים, and his hair hangs with beautiful, in a beautiful way. So they meant to say this is b'gashmiyut, but really what they meant to say is b'ruchniyut, that they see a kid that that's that's that's a gevaldike kid. הלך ועמד על פתח בית האסורים, so he wanted to test him to see what kind of kid this is. He came to the door of the jail, he was standing outside, I guess standing by the window. אמר, he said, he quoted a pasuk: מי נתן למשיסה יעקב, who gave, why did the Oybershter make Yaakov, means the Yidden, get משיסה, משיסה means destruction, וישראל לבוזזים, and Yidden should become robbed and hurt? So he said that pasuk. ענה אותו תינוק, so the child from inside the jail answered ואמר, he said: הלא ה' זו חטאנו לו, it's ה' that we sinned to Him, ולא אבו בדרכיו הלוך, and we didn't want to go in His ways, ולא שמעו בתורתו, and we didn't hear to His Torah. This is the end of the pasuk. In other words, he knew. He tested him, he saw that this kid is a talmid chacham, knows. אמר, so Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chanania said: מובטחני בו, I'm sure, שמורה הוראה בישראל, that if this kid gets out, he'll become a great a great leader, a great מורה הוראה, a great posek. העבודה, so I swear, שאיני זז מכאן עד שאפדנו בכל ממון שפוסקין עליו. I promise I'm not going to leave from here until I pay for him as much money as they ask for. אמרו, they said: לא זז משם, he takeh didn't leave, עד שפדאו בממון הרבה, till he redeemed him with a lot of money. It doesn't say how much. ולא היו ימים מועטים, and takeh it didn't take long, עד שהורה הוראה בישראל, that takeh became a big posek. ומנו, who is it? Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha. In halacha you're not supposed to pay more for uh to redeem a That's why the Maharam of Rothenburg didn't want to be redeemed. Yeah. But there's a yotze min haklal again. There's a yotze min haklal for a rav, a ראש ישיבה. ראש ישיבה. Who was this? Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha, but it's not the famous Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha Kohen Gadol, because this happened after the חורבן. There's a famous Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha that this Gemara says he came into the קודש הקדשים and he heard a voice saying: ישמעאל בני ברכני, bless bless me, but that's not him. It's a different Yishmael ben Elisha. He was also a kohen, because we see the next story. אמר רב יהודה אמר רב, רב Rav Yehuda in the name of Rav said: מעשה בבנו ובתו של רבי ישמעאל בן אלישע, story, the son and the daughter of רבי ישמעאל בן אלישע שנשבו לשני אדונים, that they were captured and taken to two different people, two different masters. לימים נזדווגו שניהם במקום אחד, these two masters happened to come meet together. זה אומר, one guy says to his friend: יש לי עבד, I just got a slave, שאין כיופיו בכל העולם, that there's no one as beautiful as him. וזה אומר, the other one says, you know what: יש לי שפחה, I have a maid, שאין בכל העולם כולו כיופיה, there's nobody in the world as beautiful as her. אמרו, so they said: Oh, the best thing, בוא ונשיאם זה לזה, let's marry them off together, and then the children will be beautiful, ונחלוק בולדותיהן, and we'll divide the children. הכניסום לחדר, so they put them both in the same room. And I guess they put them in the same room hoping that that they're going to have relations. זה ישב בקרן זווית זה, he sat in this corner. זו ישבה בקרן זווית זה, she sat in this corner, and they didn't look at each other. זה אומר, this guy says, he says to himself: אני כהן בן כהנים גדולים, I'm a כהן, children of כהנים גדולים, אשא שפחה, I should marry a שפחה? And he didn't know because it's dark I guess, it was dark. dark in the room, he didn't know who she was. זו אומרת, she said to herself, אני כהנת בת כהנים גדולים, I'm a כהנת, daughter of כהנים גדולים, אנשא לעבד? I should get married to an עבד? ובכו כל הלילה, and all night they were crying, both crying. כיון שעלה עמוד השחר, when it got light, הכירו זה את זה, they recognized each other. ונפלו זה על זה, they fell on each other, they hugged each other, וגעו בבכיה, and they cried, עד שיצתה נשמתן, till their נשמה left them. That's how ועליהם קונן ירמיה, that's where ירמיה was was crying, was he said, על אלה אני בוכיה, this is why I'm crying, עיני עיני ירדה מים, my eyes should let water come down, which means my eyes tear. Zogt di Gemara vaiter: What, why did they die? Huh? Why did they die? Cuz they they died out of out of out of כלות נפש, but it was good, because otherwise who knows what they would do to them. They wanted them to They could have and they would have made forced them even. Yeah. They didn't, I mean they didn't know. The children, they would have forced them. It's a brother and a sister. So before they thought the problem is, he's marrying a, she's going he's marrying a שפחה, she's going to marry an עבד, which is an עבירה. But here, we're talking about they was afraid probably that they'll marry they'll force them a brother and a sister. Better that they died than do the עריות? Yeah, yeah. Actually, this story we say in on Tisha B'Av in the Kinot, we say this story. אמר רבי שמעון בן לקיש, רבי שמעון בן לקיש said, מעשה באשה אחת, a story with this woman, וצפנת בת פניאל שמה, her name was Tzofnat, the daughter of Peni'el. Why did they call her like that? Tzofnat, the word Tzofnat means to look, שהכל צופין ביופיה, she was so beautiful everyone looked at her beauty. בת פניאל, daughter of פניאל, בתו של כהן גדול, the daughter of a כהן גדול, ששימש לפני ולפנים, that did the avodah inside of inside, in קדש הקדשים, that's why the word P'niel is פני קל, inside of there by der Eibishter. Why is it called Tzafnat Paneach by Yosef? No. That was There it means the revealer of the hidden secrets. But it's the same idea: looking, to make clear. צפנת comes from the word צופה. It's the same: Tzafnat Paneach means you make clear, you make see the secrets, you reveal the secrets. So, there's this woman שנתעלל בה שבאיה כל הלילה, there was this captor of hers that did things to her all night. למחר, the next day, הלבישה שבעה חלוקין, he put her on seven clothes, והוציאה למוכרה, and he took her out to the market to sell. בא אדם אחד שהיה מכוער ביותר, came this ugly man. אמר לו, he said he wants to buy her, but he's, הראיני את יופיה, show me her beauty. אמר לו, he said, ריקא, you fool, אם אתה רוצה ליקח, קח, want to buy her, buy her, שאין כיופיה בכל העולם כולו, there's nobody as beautiful as her. אמר לו, אף על פי כן, still, I want to see. הפשיטה ששה חלוקין, so he took off six of the the clothes, והשביעי קרעתו, the seventh one she herself tore off, ונתפלשה באפר, and she started rolling in the sand. אמרה לפניו, she said to him, to דער אויבערשטער, רבונו של עולם, אם עלינו לא חסת, מילא on us you don't care, on our כבוד, על קדושת שמך הגיבור, למה לא תחוס? But on your on kiddush Hashem, look what they're doing, and this is a chillul Hashem. ולכך קונן ירמיה, this is what Yirmiyahu is crying, and this is a pasuk in in in Yirmiyahu: בת עמי חגרי שק, daughter of my nation, put on a sack, והתפלשי באפר, roll in the afar, this was a remez for this, אבל יחיד עשי לך, make yourself a private אבילות, מספד תמרורים, a הספד of crying, כי פתאום יבא השודד עלינו, because suddenly the שודד, the robber will come on us. Who's the us? Der Eibishter is saying it. Should have said, 'On you!' עליך, עלינו, doesn't say on you, אלא עלינו, on us. Kevayachol, דער אויבערשטער is saying, 'עלי ועליך בא השודד, the שודד who came, he's not only hurting you, he's hurting me too.' Nu, so? So why is he doing it? Who knows? Okay, how it goes, let's try to finish this Daf. No answer for that at all. No answer. No. אמר רב יהודה אמר רב: מאי דכתיב, it says, ועשקו גבר וביתו ואיש ונחלתו. The pasuk says that a man and his house would rob his נחלה, which means rob his wife. מעשה באדם אחד שנתן עיניו באשת רבו, ושוליית נגרי הוה. There was a man who had was a student, a student of carpentry, and he liked, and he had a teacher who taught him this, and he put his eye on the wife of his teacher, and he was looking for ways to get her. פעם אחת הוצרך רבו ללוות. Once his master needed money to borrow. אמר לו, so he asked this student, so he said, שגר אשתך אצלי, send your wife to me, ואלוונה, I'll lend the money. שיגר אשתו, at least he sent the wife, שהתה עמו שלשת ימים, שלשת ימים, he kept her for three days before he sent her home. קדם ובא אצלו, so the husband was wondering. He came, אמר לו: אשתי ששיגרתי לך, היכן היא? What happened to my wife I sent you? אמר לו: אני פטרתיה לאלתר, It's not an עבד, right? Huh? It's a slave No, no, no, a worker. Said, \"I sent her home right away.\" \"Why'd he wait three days?\" \"Huh?\" \"Why'd he wait three days?\" \"So according to one opinion, he didn't עביד work for three days. No, you see what happened.\" \"Why'd the husband wait three days?\" \"Maybe he came before, and he said, and then he said he didn't know, and he sent him back, and then, 'Go,' I don't know. שמעיתי,\" then he says, \"I heard that תינוקות נתעללו בה בדרך. I heard she on the on the way home, and she got involved with the boys.\" אמר ליה, he said, \"מאי אעביד? What do you advise me to do?\" אמר ליה, \"אם אתה שומע לעצתי, if you listen to me, גירשה, divorce her, such a woman who did such things.\" אמר ליה, \"כתובתה מרובה, which is such a big כתובה. I gave her a big כתובה.\" אמר ליה, \"אני אלווך. I'll lend you the money. ותן לה כתובתה, give her her כתובה.\" עמד זה וגירשה, so he divorced her, and borrowed the money from him and gave her the כתובה. הלך הוא, so he went, ונשאה, and he married her. כיוון שהגיע זמנו ולא היה לו לפורעו, and now the time to pay came, he didn't have any money. אמר ליה, he said, \"You know what? בוא ועשה עמי בחובך. You know, work for me, and that's how you'll pay off slowly the debt.\" והיו הם יושבים ואוכלים ושותים, so he and his wife were sitting and eating, והוא היה עומד ומשקה, and he became the the waiter there, seeing his own wife sitting there with him. והיו דמעות נושרות מעיניו, so tears came out of his eyes, ונופלות בכוסיהם, and it came in fell into the cups. ועל אותה שעה נחתם גזר דין. For that, this was before the Churban, for something like this was the gezer din of the Churban. ואמרי לה, and some say, על שתי פתילות בנר אחד. That that's an expression. שתי פתילות בנר אחד means there are two two wicks in one candle. So this is The Maharsha explains this is a machloket here whether those three days that she was with him, did he do an aveirah? According to one pshat, the first pshat he didn't do anything, but he caused this whole thing to happen. And the second one, she was an אשת איש, and he did an aveirah, she didn't care, she did the aveirah with him. Mimela it's like she was married to two husbands. She had one husband, she was still an אשת איש, and she and she did this with him. If they've given her if did he give her a ketubah or not, that would all depend. But if she if she did with the aveirah, then she couldn't have had a ketubah. She didn't deserve it. Yeah, but he didn't know that. He thought Yeah, but she couldn't What do you mean? Halachah is he would give it, and she would take it. That's it. He didn't know. She took it. She she was as bad as this guy. Yeah, even though he didn't know it, he could he would still give it. Because had he known, had that been proved that He didn't suspect. No, maybe he did suspect. Not with him, he suspected with other people. So even then he He suspected, but for suspicion you can't you can still give the ketubah. If you prove it, then you can't. Even the same this simple meaning is also is bad. That shows how people were at that time. ולא מיחו, vos heyst ולא מיחו? ולא מיחו. You say nobody nobody protested the Where does it say ולא מיחו? Maharsha, yeah? שנשתהו אצלו כי ג' ימים ועברו עבירה, אשת איש דינה בשריפה... Yeah, that's the second pshat. כיוון שהיו העולם יודעים ולא מיחו, נחתם גזר דין דכולהו. Oh, he said it then, so why are everybody shuldig? Says the gezer din came because of them, because of one person. So he says, ai, since other people knew about it, and they didn't stop it. Huh? I'm somewhere around
