Satan Searches for the Torah Across Creation

ואמר רבי יהושע בן לוי, רבי יהושע בן לוי said: בשעה שירד משה מלפני הקדוש ברוך הוא, when משה רבינו came down from the שמים, from השם, בא שטן ואמר לפניו: The שטן came to the Aibershter, and he said, \"ריבונו של עולם, תורה היכא היא? Where is the תורה?\" אמר ליה, he said to him, \"נתתיה לארץ. I gave it to the earth.\" הא, so he went to find it there. הלך אצל הארץ, he came to the earth. אמר לה, he said, \"תורה היכא? Where is the תורה? I heard it came to you.\" אמרה ליה, so the ארץ said to him, \"אלקים הבין דרכה. The Aibershter knows where it is. I don't know. I didn't get it. I don't know.\" הלך אצל הים. When he said הארץ, he thought maybe it means the water of the ארץ. אמר ליה - Sorry, but isn't the malach hamaves and the Satan the same? We just talked about the malach hamaves knows - The different, I mean, there were different ציורים. So, so the new ציור he didn't know because he was in a new ציור? Yeah. Kushya ma'alya, no? Yeah. So, הלך אצל הים, he came to the ים, ואמר ליה, and he said to the - and so the ים said to him, \"אינה עמדי. It was in a pasuk, it's not with me, I don't know.\" הלך אצל תהום, he came to the אונטער, אבגרונד, depths, depths of the ground. ואמר ליה, and the grips said, bottom of the ground said, \"אין בי. I don't have it.\" כדכתיב, שנאמר, it says in a pasuk: תהום אמר \"לא בי היא\", the תהום said, \"Not by me היא, it's not by me,\" וים אמר \"אין עמדי\", and the yam said, \"It's not with me.\" אבדון ומות אמרו. So he came to getting lost and death, that means the Gehinnom. He said to the Gehinnom, \"You know where the Torah is?\" אמרו ליה, they said, \"באזנינו שמענו שמעה. We heard about it, but we don't have it.\"

Satan Returns to God and Is Sent to Moses

חזר ואמר לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא, so he came back to the Aibershter, \"You told me that it - I asked you where the Torah is and it's found in here, ריבונו של עולם, חיפשתי בכל הארץ ולא מצאתיה. I looked all over the earth, and I couldn't find it.\" אמר ליה, so the Aibershter said to the Satan, \"לך אצל בן עמרם. הא, go to בן עמרם, go to Moshe Rabbeinu.\" הלך אצל משה, he came to Moshe, ואמר ליה, he said to him, \"תורה שנתן לך הקדוש ברוך הוא היכן היא? Hashem gave you the Torah, where is it?\" אמר ליה, so he said to him, \"וכי מה אני, מה אני? What am I שנתן לי הקדוש ברוך הוא תורה? You think I'm something special, the Aibershter gave me the Torah?\" אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה, השם said to Moshe: \"משה, בדאי אתה! You're lying! I mean, what do you mean you don't know where the Torah is? What is that?\" אמר לפניו, so Moshe answered to the Aibershter: \"ריבונו של עולם, חמדה גנוזה יש לך, there is this special treasure you have, שאתה משתעשע בה בכל יום, you play with it, you give it, it gives you pleasure every day. אני אחזיק טובה לעצמי? I should hold myself big that I got it? In other words, why did I answer that I - you think who am I, you think I got it? Out of anavah! Who you think who am I?\" אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה, so Hashem to Moshe, \"הואיל ומיעטת עצמך, since you were very humble, תקרא על שמך, it'll be called on your name. שנאמר, it says: זכרו תורת משה עבדי. Remember the Torah of Moshe.\" So the Gemara does ask, not here, in a different place, the Gemara asks, \"How do you call it תורת משה? Is it תורת משה? תורת השם!\" So there the Gemara says, because Moshe Rabbeinu was moser nefesh for the Torah, so mimela it's called on his name. But here it says he got it as a present. Since he was battel, so mimela the Eibershter is called said, \"I'll call the Torah on your name.\" But he also had the knowledge. I mean - What do you mean? He had it, he understood it, but without the humility, I mean, he had the Torah. For sure he had the Torah! No question he had the Torah. He just - Just because he was - Just like when you come to a talmid chacham and says, you ask him, \"Do you know this Gemara?\" So pretends to not know. Why? Because he shouldn't be a baal gaavah. That's what they asked the Alter Rebbe, \"Do you know Shas?\" He said, \"Yeah, half, only half.\" \"Which half?\" \"Whichever one you want.\" So it's really not telling the truth in a way. Gemara says, Gemara says there are there are three things a talmid chacham is allowed to change the words, and not be so truthful. And one of them is the Torah. And they ask him a certain sugya, in order not to be a baal gaavah, he is able to say, \"No, I don't know it.\" So here also Moshe Rabbeinu had the Torah, \"I don't know it.\" Right? Works well. If you're a talmid chacham. You can also say you don't know. Up to you. Right.

Moses as a Talmid Chacham Who Says ‘I Don’t Know’

Moshe Rabbeinu did the same thing, because he was a real talmid chacham. Va'amar Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi also said: בשעה שעלה משה למרום, when Moshe went up to שמים, מצאו להקדוש ברוך הוא שהיה קושר כתרים לאותיות, he saw Hashem was making crowns to the letters. These are the tagin that you have on the letters. And they're very important, because the Gemara says in a different place, רבי עקיבא היה דורש תילי תילים של הלכות, entire piles of halachot from each tag. Ha?? Why don't you know everything? So whatever halachah that was nogea to know is written down. I don't know if it's ממש הלכה למעשה, it was ביאורים. Who says? Because it wasn't written down. Something else: other שלוחי also looked into it, from this, that. Kabbalah, no? Why only Rabbi Akiva, one person is mentioned over here? Probably everyone did, but he did more, no? That's what it means: תלי תלים. Where do you find any זכר to this kind? But he's so he's right. It's probably all chasidut, all Kabbalah. These are not these are all deep things, and that he couldn't reveal. So we taka find sometimes. Some things we do find. Where do we find beside? Now we

Four Levels of Torah: Letters, Points, Trop, and Tagin

find in קבלה, רמזים, this. Because it says there are there are four things in Torah: there's טעמים, תגין, נקודות, and אותיות. There's the words, there's the trop, and there's the נקודות, and then there's the תגין. And of all, the תגין is the highest level. The words are the lowest. Then you have the נקודות, פשוט how to read the words. Then you have the trop, how to sing the words. And then you have פשוט the תגין, which you're not even you never say it. The trop, when you read the Torah, says Where does it come to play? Yeah, the תגין, some words have תגין, שעטנז גץ has תגין: ש, ע, ט, נ, ז, ג, צ. But then there's קבלה תגין, other תגין that you have on top of letters and all that, and that's supposed to, you know. The mezuzot are written with תגין also, also על פי קבלה. Everything is על פי קבלה. No, but some of the הלכות are על פי קבלה. Some of the תגין in mezuzah are also על פי הלכה? Yeah, sure. Yeah. Because I I recently checked my mezuzot, and the sofer told me, he says it doesn't have all the תגין על על פי קבלה. Doesn't have We call it קבלה תגין. Right, קבלה תגין, right. Yeah, so so there's הלכה תגין and there's קבלה תגין. Possibly the highest level, you know. It's connected to כתר, so. And they don't have so much, because we we haven't, I mean Not so much what? We have enough to get through, to understand first, before. Yeah, but it doesn't cost much. It costs a few dollars to have extra תגין, but not much more. So. But to understand it Well, something else we don't understand it. A סופר דאַרף וויסן, he has to know. Wait, he doesn't have to know the כוונות, he has to know exactly how to make it, that's all. I

Story of Mezuzot Inspection and Rabbi Wosner

heard a funny If I can interrupt, I heard an amazing story of somebody went to to the Rebbe, and the Rebbe urged him to check his mezuzot. And he checked all the mezuzot, and he let he let the Rebbe know az az אלעס כשר. And the and the רבי זאגט, \"נאָך אַ מאָל מוז מען check-ן, נאָך דאָס קען נישט, נאָך מילא עס איז אַן ענין מזוזות.\" And it happened a second time, and and and the and the Rebbe, and he also let the Rebbe know that everything, and the Rebbe then the Rebbe told him the third a third time to check the mezuzot. Er geht צו ער geht צו רב בעיר, a ganzer שטאָטס רב. He checked the mezuzot, everything was good. Er gegangen zum שטאָטס רב, der er gegangen zum, in בני ברק איז ער געוועזן. So he didn't go to Rabbi Landa, he went to Rabbi Wosner. So Rabbi Wosner asks who is who is the sofer? So he told him this and this and this sofer. Said, \"I happen to know this sofer,\" Rabbi Wosner said, \"I will call him.\" I'm sorry to interrupt, but this is a No, it's an amazing story. I know this story. It's an amazing story. And and and and Rabbi Wosner told him. So he says he says, so he says, so he says, Rabbi Wosner told So he called the sofer and he says he says, yeah, he says, \"Tell me, you you go in to the mikveh right after each the name Hashem?\" Said, \"Yeah, yes I do.\" So Rabbi Wosner tells him, he says, \"I happen to know where you live. If you live out far in the boondocks over there, there is no mikveh, for practical reasons, there's no mikveh that you should be able to go is.\" So he tell he tells Rabbi Wosner, he says, \"Yes, טאַקע, I save all the שמות that goes to the end.\" I write them and I leave out when the שמות, I leave it out. Go to the mikveh and I write them all in. And that's and that's why the Rebbe says it's pasul. Pasul, but you can't tell. Not kesidran. But in in mezuzah, it has to be כסדרן. In Sefer Torah it does not have Still, no. So, doesn't he know that? Huh? Doesn't he know that? That was, when I heard the story, it was a big פלא. A sofer, a good sofer doesn't know the halacha that it has to be כסדרן? Huh? Even a bad sofer. Even a bad sofer, yeah. That's the basic halacha. It has to be written כסדרן. I mean. So maybe maybe it maybe it's just he knew the halacha, but that was his easy way out. Yeah, maybe he What did That's why that we know that the most person has to be a yerei shamayim is a sofer. A sofer and a shochet, more than a Rav, more than Why? Because there are things you never could tell, because if you can never know if you wrote כסדרן or not. See, other, a Rav, פסק a שאלה, he's always afraid, maybe someone will come and show him he's wrong. You know, same with a shochet, you never know how he did it. So you have to know that's why a sofer has to be a yerei shamayim, because you never could figure out. So this guy honestly admitted. Tell him how to three times Three times to check the mezuzah. Yeah. Second, that he would go to mikveh. Huh? The same guy would go to mikveh. Yeah. Not only before the shemos. I'm sorry to interrupt. Yeah, yeah, I heard the story, yeah. Yeah, I'm sure, I mean. You need to make a parnasa. The mikveh was is far away. Yeah. It's true. That that that's the truth. That's exactly what happened, and that's the problem. That's why you need a Yeah. And you need a mikveh close by. Because your parnasa is your yirat shamayim. That's the Yeah. Parnasa is yirat shamayim. Right, you're right. But you don't have to Don't have to, but it's he does. Why did that is this pasul? This is What is? Obviously the guy didn't know. I don't know what kind of guy this was. It's a modern-day story because it's a modern-day guy. What kind of guy is this? He knows the din, but he did it did it farkert? And then he would care to go to the mikveh? I can't imagine that that he didn't know the din, right? It was an easy way out. But a guy who doesn't care to to to write פסול'דיג תפילין, why does he go to the mikveh, yeah? If he writes פסול'דיג תפילין, doesn't care, why does he care to go to the mikveh? Like somebody goes to mikveh. Meshuga. Yeah. Learned not to go to mikveh. Why does that why does that affect you? If you want to write יו״ד ק״א וא״ו ק״א, and he was going to the mikveh, it was worthwhile even if I wasn't פסול'דיג תפילין. It wasn't modern picture, maybe he decided that Is that the only thing that he pasul? No, the story ends off with this, that he told him, \"You have to go back to every person you sold your tefillin and mezuzot and thrown also. Every person you sold, you have to go get them back and pay them the money back.\" \"Oh, I didn't know.\" \"Yeah, because every all the people you sold, they're all pasul. They're all פסול'דיג מזוזות, פסול'דיג תפילין.\" So, he came and he saw the Eibershter making these crowns. אמר ליה, so the Eibershter said to משה, \"משה! אין שלום בעירך? In your place they don't say hello? You came up here, you don't say hello?

Eibershter Demands a Blessing After Moses’ Silence

You don't say shalom?\" אמר לפניו, so he said to the Eibershter, \"כלום יש עבד שנותן שלום לרבו? Does an עבד, servant, slave, give shalom to his master? It doesn't פאסט.\" אמר ליה, so he said, \"You're right, that not to say שלום, but היה לך לעזרני. You should have helped Me.\" Rashi said, \"You should have said תצליח! Give the אייבערשטער a bracha.\" This is only Kabbalah things, doesn't make any sense. Like Rashi says. Yeah. לעזרני לומר תצלח במלאכתך. Wish good luck in your work. Like to say, like a guy eats, you say appetite, בתיאבון. לומר ברכו ה׳. Yeah, so. So shalom he said, he didn't give, didn't say hello to Him. Just trying to teach him how to act. I understand. Maharsha, everyone? What a Maharsha! What are we talk? This is the בן... yeah, Binyahu ben Yehoyada says תצליח. Well, what he answered him was good. The next one is good, huh? Well, he didn't even answer him. Pshh. מיד אמר ליה, so right away, it doesn't mean right away, so next time when he saw the Eibershter, the first thing he said to the Eibershter was, \"ועתה יגדל נא כח ה׳ כאשר דברת. Now your כח should be\" He told the Eibershter, let Your כח be strong, gave him a bracha. כח. Gave the Eibershter a bracha. Okay. In Chassidut it's understood, and it'aruta dile'eila it'aruta deletata, yes, כמו מטה ומעלה, and all these things, the Eibershter told him, the hashpa'ah that I give, but you have to be a keli, however, you have all these issues. But he says he says, but he says, \"כאשר דברת. This is as per your request.\" Yeah, yeah, that's right, yeah. But not so not so outlandish, you know? Right, you said it. But the question is, what was the meaning of the request? Uh-huh. Why the Eibershter said he needs a berachah from him? Okay, he's right that he wanted to teach him how to behave to amongst people, but still, it's strange. When we say baruch Hashem, we say baruch Hashem, what do you mean? We're praising the Eibershter, I mean Something else. That's we are praising the Eibershter, but we're not giving giving the Eibershter a berachah, he should matzliach. How about when you bench ברכת כהנים? How about when you Heh heh heh. אמר רבי יהושע בן לוי, רבי יהושע בן לוי said, מאי דכתיב, what is the pshat in the pasuk it says, right before the עגל, וירא העם כי בשש משה, that the nation saw that משה is held back, what the בשש is, is late. He's late. So אל תקרי בשש אלא באו שש. The word בשש could be changed and say באו, he came, שש, the sixth hour. What does that mean?

Moses’ Ascension, Delay, and the People’s Reaction

בשעה שעלה משה למרום, משה went up, אמר להם לישראל, he told the Yidden, \"Remember, לסוף ארבעים יום, at the end of the 40 days, בתחלת שש, in the beginning of the sixth hour, אני בא, I'm coming back.\" Question was, what does 40 days mean? לסוף ארבעים יום, so when the 40 days passed, including the day he went up. בא שטן ועירבב את העולם, שטן came mixed up the world, it became, I don't know what it means it mixed up the world. Dark, it says, who knows. You know? Huh? Like he's a good people Yeah, but I think it says that in Midrash also, it became very dark. And it's like, you know, supposed to say that משה died, so ממילא די גאנצע וועלט is crying. ואמר להם, he said, \"משה רבכם היכן?\" He asked, \"Where is your רבי משה?\" אמרו לו, they said, \"עלה למרום, he went up to שמים.\" אמר להם, so he said to them, \"באו שש.\" He said, \"He was supposed to come by the sixth hour, did he come back the sixth hour?\" ולא השגיחו עליו. They didn't care. As long as Satan is talking, so leave him. Trust me. So he said, \"מת, I'm telling you he died.\" ולא השגיחו עליו, they didn't care. הראה להם דמות מטתו, so then he showed them they're looking and they see מלאכים carrying in a bed with Moshe Rabbeinu in it, so they saw Moshe Rabbeinu died. והיינו דקאמר לאהרן, and that's what they meant when they said to אהרן, כי זה משה האיש. What do you mean זה? Whenever you say זה, you're pointing at it. So you say, see? There he is! There, he died! So mimeila they wanted that and so the Satan got them involved. So really it's not their fault, it's all because of the Satan. But still at the same time, they're still in the fault, yeah, to some a chesaron to the extent what they saw, maybe? Yeah. They should have understood. To that extent. What would be if he would say this the day before? I mean, they wouldn't care, because Moshe said six hours. Ela mai, they pashut miscalculated. So then they had to start thinking, instead of listening to the Satan, they had to start thinking, maybe we made a mistake, maybe the timing is not right, and had they done that, they would have figured out that today is not the day. So then even what they saw wouldn't help, just like if they'd see three days before. If fear sets in, all logic goes away. We're talking about emunah. Here we're talking about emunah. It's so tricky. Ober that's what happened, you're 100% right. But still, if you have the real emunah, There's no logic at this point. Not logic, okay, if you want to talk about logic, you're right. Logic just means, but if you go beyond logic... Satan makes pictures in the sky and If he wants to, he could. That he puts ideas in their head, I can imagine, but Maybe this was in their head, and he put in everyone's head that everyone imagined that they saw this. It's true. Still happens today. It certainly happens today. Certainly happens today, that's why I can relate to it. Can't relate to pictures in the sky, cuz I used to think so, man. That's for sure. You can see it, you can see it. Yeah, yishar koach. False imaginations. Yep, that's it.
