Opening the Parsha and the Phrase

starts this week's פרשה, one of the two פרשיות, אם בחוקותי תלכו. זאגט דער ספרא, וואס ווערט איינגעבראכט אין רש\"י, but the ספרא says and רש\"י טייטשט it. What does the תורה mean when it says if you will follow, go in my חוקים? Now normally my חוקים mean my statutes, my my מצוות. So he says, יכול אלו המצוות, לכאורה, it means מצוות? תלמוד לומר, no. It says מצוות is written later. What does the פסוק בחוקותי תלכו mean? You should learn תורה, work hard in learning תורה. אז בחוקותי תלכו מיינט נישט קיום המצוות, it doesn't mean if you should do מצוות, that's a different פסוק. But this פסוק means, אבער שטייט שפעטער בפירוש בפירוש, ואת מצוותי תשמרו, you should keep the מצוות. נאר וואס מיינט בחוקותי תלכו, what does it mean you walk in the חוקים? Is it האראווען אין תורה, you should toil in תורה. דארף מען פארשטיין, so we have to understand. אויב בחוקותי תלכו וואלט געמיינט מצוות, would, if בחוקותי תלכו would mean מצוות, וואלט מען דאן געקענט מסביר זיין פאר וואס ער דערמאנט נאר חוקים, then we could explain why does he mention חוקים when he talks about מצוות?

Three Categories of Commandments: עדות, משפטים, חוקים

הגם אז די מצוות האבן פאראן דריי סוגים פון עדות און משפטים, מצוות has three categories: עדות, משפטים, and חוקים. So, if you'd ask a שאלה, if why if he wants to tell you to go in the מצוות, why does he pick חוקים? Why didn't he say עדות and משפטים? So the answer would be simple. ווייל אויך עדות און משפטים וואס האבן אויף זיך א טעם, even those מצוות, what's the difference between עדות and משפטים and חוקים? חוקים are those מצוות have no reason, make no sense; עדות and משפטים have a reason. So you could say that even the מצוות עדות and משפטים, דארף מען מקיים זיין בקבלת עול כמו חוקים, you have to do it regardless of the fact that it makes sense. You have to do it because השם said so, and forget about the reasoning behind it, the main thing is to do it because השם said. So that's why he picks the word חוקים to tell you that's the point of the מצוות. אך יעצט, אבער אזוי ווי ער רעדט זיך וועגן תורה, but we just said it doesn't mean מצוות, it means learning תורה, פאר וואס זאגט דער פסוק א לשון בחוקותי תלכו? Why does it pick a לשון you should go in the חוקים? When you learn hard תורה, you don't have to just learn how to just know what to do, the דינים, נאר ער דארף פארשטיין זייערע טעמים, you have to learn in order to understand the reasons. ווי זיי זענען נתפרש געווארן אין תורה שבכתב, תורה שבעל פה, that's in the written תורה and the oral תורה, but you have to understand it. So why does it could say חוקים? כהאטש אז די מצוות וואס האבן אנגערופן מיט'ן נאמען חוקים, איז דאך נישט שייך צו פארשטיין זייערע טעמים, and even though the מצוות that have are called חוקים, you can't understand the reasons, ווארום אויף זיי שטייט דאך, it says concerning those מצוות, חוקה, it's a חוקה, אין לך רשות להרהר אחריה, you can't think against it, you can't no question it, זענען זיי דאך אבער א קלענערע חלק פון תורה. These מצוות that you can't understand are very, very small percentage of the תורה. דער גרעסטער חלק פון תורה איז געגעבן געווארן להשגתם, most parts of the תורה you could understand. So therefore, most of the תורה you could understand, so why when he talks about תורה does he use the expression חוקים which normally means those מצוות you can't understand? Just like when we talk about the written תורה generally, the main thing is the reading of the words. That's why even an an ignorant person when he gets an עליה and he doesn't understand what they're reading, he still makes a ברכה. So that means that the understanding of תורה שבכתב is not that important. In other words, you're יוצא the מצוה of תורה even if you don't understand. But that, איז א סך ווייניקער אין כמות פון תורה שבעל פה, that's much less in quantity, in size, than the oral תורה, וואו מען מוז דוקא פארשטיין, that you only you have to understand. אויב ס'איז אן פארשטענדעניש וואס מען לערנט, if you don't understand what you're learning, קען מען דערמיט קיין ברכת התורה נישט מאכן, you can't make the ברכה. So we see that the not the part that's not understood in תורה is the lesser part. תורה שבכתב is lesser than תורה שבעל פה, in the מצוות also חוקים are less than the others. So that's the lesser part. That's only בנוגע תורה שבכתב, this but most of the תורה is not like that.

Written vs Oral Torah: Limits and Unlimited

תורה שבכתב און תורה שבעל פה איז בעין ערוך, the difference between תורה שבכתב and תורה שבעל פה, the written תורה and the oral תורה, is no comparison. תורה שבכתב is exactly a fixed amount, how many letters this has, how many words it has, מען טאר נישט זיין א יתר, you're not allowed to have anything more. די הגבלה פון תורה שבעל פה איז אבער, but what the limitation of the oral תורה, נאר אין דעם וואס עס איז שוין בגילוי ובפועל. Whatever we have, we have. That's the limit. That's but that's not the end. אבער מצד דעם וואס אין איר איז פאראן און עס קומט ארויס בגילוי נאך און נאך, but you could get more and more, מה שתלמיד ותיק עתיד לחדש, what a scholar is able to come up with new ideas, איז תורה שבעל פה בלי גבול, so it's unlimited. So תורה שבכתב is limited, תורה שבעל פה is unlimited. How about a ברכה in the morning and ברכות השחר and תורה and you don't learn, but we still haven't davened, but we have those words? No, before, right after the ברכה, you learn. You say right after that. Right after the ברכה we say ברכת כהנים. Oh, so that's called... And then we say תורה שבעל פה, the משנה. That's called learning. You don't understand, I'm talking about the first one when we get there. Yeah, okay. איז אבער דאך איז אין תורה שבכתב גופא, in the written תורה itself, דער חלק פון תורה וואס לויט נישט פארשטאנען, even The written תורה, the amount, the part of תורה which we don't understand the reason, the חלק וואס רעדט וועגן חוקים, that part talks about the חוקים is a סך קלענער, it's much smaller than the חלק אין תורה וואס רעדט וועגן די מצוות וואס קומען אראפ בהשגה, much smaller than the תורה that talks about those מצוות we do understand. So this all is a lead-up to איז דאך נישט פארשטענדיק, so we don't understand the לשון בחוקותי תלכו. Why does he use the לשון you should go in my חוקים? ווען דער פסוק וויל אונדז זאגן, since the פסוק wants to tell us, שתהיו עמלים בתורה, you should learn תורה, פארוואס זאגט ער חוקים וואס איז גאר א קליינע חלק פון תורה? We just finished saying that תורה, חוקים are the least, it's very small, so why does he here, when it talks about תורה, mention חוקים? The word בחוקותי meant, we said before חוקים, those מצוות which are in the category that you can't understand. But there's another meaning to it.

Carved Out Meaning of בחוקותי

The פסוק is talking about learning תורה. It tries to tell you that when you learn תורה, you have to learn it in the form as if it's carved out in you. What does carved out mean? What's so special about words which are carved in a stone versus words which are written on a paper with ink? First of all, the words are not a separate entity. When you have, when you write with ink a word on a paper, then the ink is separate, the paper is separate, you just connected it. But if you carve out words in a stone, the words are the stone itself. Even when the ink penetrates into the parchment. Yeah, but you can erase it usually. די מעלה איז פאראן אויך בכתב, so he says this, that it becomes united, it's even when you write. הגם די אותיות וועלכע מען שרייבט אויף קלף פארמאגט צו זיין א צוגעגעבענע זאך צום קלף, even though when you write it's an extra thing added, ווערן זיי אבער דורכן שרייבן פאראייניקט מיטן קלף. They become close, they become one. Not only that it becomes one, it's to begin with not a separate entity. The letters are, their whole thing is they are the stone which they're carved out. That's what the תורה tells us when it says by תורה, learning תורה uses the word בחוקותי. We're not trying to tell you only that when you learn תורה you have to feel one with the תורה. That we talk other places that don't learn תורה and stay separate from it. That's פשוט that you have to learn and become one with it. דא קומט ער באווארנען, here we're talking about something deeper. אז דער לימוד דארף זיין באופן פון חקיקה, it should be like carved out. It's not enough that you become one with the תורה like two things become one when you write something down. You have to reach a level that you are nothing, your own being doesn't count.

Becoming One with Torah: Self-Nullification

Your whole being is the תורה, which is means that it's carved out. על דרך ווי משה רבינו, דער מקבל ראשון פון תורה, like משה רבינו who is the first one that received the תורה, וואס איז געווען אין אזא ביטול, he was so בטל, so he had self-nullification, so humble, און יחוד מיט אלקות, he was so close to השם, ביז ער האט געזאגט \"ונתתי עשב\", \"איך וועל געבן עשב\". It says in קריאת שמע, it says \"ונתתי\", I will give you grass. And this is a פרשה written in חומש דברים. חומש דברים was written by משה. So משה is saying \"I will give you grass.\" Wait, משה's giving grass? When he spoke, the שכינה was speaking. השם was speaking. He was like one with the שכינה. און אזוי אויך דער ביטול פון רשב\"י, רבי שמעון בן יוחאי, וואס האט געזאגט \"ראיתי בני עליה והם מועטים, אם שנים הם, אני ובני הם\", he said if there are two if there are two great people in the world, that's me and my son. If there's only one great person, it's me. הגם צדיקים זאגן נישט קיין שבחים פון זיך אליין, איז נישט דער דרך הצדיקים, צדיקים don't really praise themselves, ווייל ער איז נישט געווען קיין מציאות פאר זיך. So if we praise ourselves, we're a separate entity. If I praise myself, I'm praising myself. But he was so knotted, tied to השם, that it wasn't for himself. זיין גאנצע מציאות איז געווען אלקות. ביטול פון חקיקה. He was completely בטל like carved out. That's two people: I'm praising myself. No, I'm praising the one, the I'm praising the am. I am praising the the I. Am. I am. I'm praising the my the I am, I'm praising the the same the same, what is it? ווי ס'איז גערעדט כמה פעמים אז אלע פירושים אין תורה פארבונדן איינע מיט די צווייטע. The רבי has said many times that when we have more than one interpretation in תורה on anything, the two, even though they might seem like two separate interpretations, they have a connection. פארשטענדיק, so that's we have we understand אז פירוש אדמו\"ר הזקן בחוקותי פון לשון חקיקה that when the אלטער רבי said that the word בחוקותי means carved out, איז מתאים מיט דעם פירוש הפשוט בחוקותי דמצוות זו הם מצוות חוקים. It must fit and have a connection to the simple meaning of the word חוקים. The simple meaning we said means the category of מצוות which have no understanding. Now we're saying a new פשט in the word בחוקותי: carved out. They must be connected, these two. When we say that you should learn it in the form of carved out, in other words, you should learn the תורה like חוקים. What's חוקים? חוקים, when a person does a חוקה, he definitely does it for no other reason but because he's given over to השם. If you do it for any other reason, there is no reason. Just because השם said so. That's what we mean. חוקים have no reason. So when you do חוקים, you're doing it only because it's קבלת עול, because השם said and that's what you're doing. In other words, your own ego is not involved because it means nothing to to any to you other than what השם said. These are the two the two meanings go together. That's called carved out, that you don't have your own מציאות. So how are we saying that you should learn תורה like חוקים, which means just because השם said so, but you've got to understand the תורה? True, you've got to understand. Why do you want to understand the תורה? Because השם said so. You see, some people like to learn and it makes sense to them, and they understand it. Why? Because it's very interesting. We shouldn't try to understand תורה because it's interesting. The אויבערשטער said, \"Learn תורה to understand.\" So even though you're understanding and understanding means you're putting in yourself, your own, you know, מציאות, but you should do it you should put your own מציאות in only because the אויבערשטער said. That's why he If you do that, you הארעווע, you toil in learning מער וויפיל עס פאדערט זיך זיין טבע'ס מדות. If you do that, then you do it more than your nature and your how you would do it on your own. אויב ער טוט דאס נאר ווייל ער האט א גשמאק אין תורה If a person learns תורה because he enjoys it, he personally enjoys it, איז דער לערנען אפגעמאסטן לויט דער גרויס פון זיין גשמאק. Then the learning is limited to how much he enjoys. But if the moment it's beyond your enjoyment, he won't learn. So then you if you're not doing more than you enjoy, you're not toiling. Toiling means you're doing more than you should. That's the connection between both interpretations. דורך דעם לימוד אין אן אופן פון חוקים, by learning in a form of חוקים, which makes a person toil in תורה, שדי עמלות אין תורה קומט ער צו צו דעם, you reach the level אז זיין לימוד זאל זיין אין אן אופן פון חקיקה. That makes that you learn תורה and you try to understand everything you learn, but you're doing it just because השם wants you to do it, השם wants you to understand, you will reach the level of חקיקה, of carving out, אז ער מיט די תורה ווערט חד ממש, you become one with the תורה. We have to understand, what does it mean you shall go in the חוקים? הליכה איז שייך ביי אזעלכע ענינים, going is only שייך by such things אין וועלכעס עס איז פאראן חלוקי מדרגות, things which have different levels. So you can say go. Go means from level to level, reach higher levels. וואס איז פארבונדן מיט די ענין פון השתלשלות העולמות, connected to a person, to כחות, or whatever the person is, so you can say anything that's נוגע to to my my existence, to me, so there are levels in me. So you say, first you learn a little bit, then you learn with a deeper understanding, then you learn first with your heart, then you put your brain, you can try it. Things which are part of you, you go from level to level. לדוגמא, gives an example. By מדות, emotions, you can say you go from level to level. You love השם, that's an emotion. But you can go It says there's a lower level of love and a higher level of love, so you reach higher levels. Intellect. So now I understand a little bit, and if I work harder, I'll reach a higher level, because I'm I'm using my מדות, using my שכל. We said חוקים means that you do it not because of yourself, you do it just because השם said, so there's only one thing: do as השם said. So what kind of levels are there? What are you going to say? In

Reward of Going in חוקים According to לקוטי תורה

You see in לקוטי תורה it says that the word \"תלכו\", you shall go, that's a hint for the reward you get. The reward you get for serving השם with חקיקה, with the carving, if you become one with the תורה, the reward is you will go. That means you will reach a level of בלי גבול, of not of unlimited. Because anything that you reach you go from level to level and it's and and it's not one like beyond the other, it's just higher, but it's not בערך, it's not בערך is not compared. If it's not that, but it is comparative, then you never left, you never walked. A person goes higher and higher, but the second step is connected to the first, so even when you get to the second step, you never really left the first because the second is connected to the first. Then when you get to the third, connected to the second, so you never left the second, which never left the first. So you can go to a hundred steps and you never really, in essence, left the first. But when you jump, which is no comparison, when there is a gap in between and then you jump, then you left. So the שכר is, the reward is, if you learn that way, the reward will be you will go beyond any limitations. פשטות הכתוב ווי מען לערנט אין חדר מיט קינדער איז, if you learn a simple פשט in the פסוק the way you learn with children in school, אז די סיפור דער סיפור השכר הייבט זיך אן פון ונתתי גשמיכם בעתם. Actually, the פסוק goes like this: If you'll go in my חוקים, I will give you rain. Where does the reward start? Going in my חוקים is what you're supposed to do, and the reward is: I'll give you rain. ו'תלכו' רעדט מען וועגן דעם מענטש'ס עבודה, the going speaks about what the person is going to do. אלטער רבי says, no, the word בחוקותי is what you will do and תלכו is the reward. You will get to תלכו. So that's the חסידישע, but he's going to explain what it means.

Faith vs Understanding: The Role of אמונה

When we say you have to believe in השם, believe in השם, אמונה, it only refers to such levels of Godliness that a person cannot understand. Because in a level that you could understand, you don't have to have אמונה. אמונה is faith. You could understand it, so there's no faith. But whatever levels you are able to understand, you have to understand. And therefore the רמב״ם says that the first מצוה is לידע, to know that there is a God, not have to believe. That's not believe. The fact that there is a God makes a lot of sense. Everything had to start from someplace, so every has to be a be- It has to be a first being that's always there. לידע is to know, not to believe. Huh? Saying, so it has He doesn't say to believe. No. He says to know. That you could know. So what's the ענין of אמונה? There are higher levels that you cannot reach through understanding. That you have to have אמונה. ערשט נאך שלמות ההשגה, after you finish proper, in the best way, understanding, the proper way of understanding, ווי העכער וואס זיין זיין שכל קען נאר זיין, as far as your שכל could get, אין די העכערע מדרגות וואס שכל קען נישט תופס זיין, higher level you cannot understand, דארט איז דער ארט פאר אמונה. That's the אמונה. This is the specialty of the belief a איד has in God over the belief that the גוים has.

Seeking True Faith Beyond Apparent Belief

The goal is to get to the אמונה, even though it's another דרגה once you learned it. Good, because that's There's more. But you get to the אמונה. So it's like a גוי, they don't really have אמונה. Why? They believe in God in the levels, in the way that your שכל forces you. They believe there must be a being, that's not אמונה. So their אמונה is on the level of ממלא כל עלמין, בחינה פון אלוקות שזה תופס אין שכל. That level you could understand. אידן believe in the אויבערשטער, that means the fact that there is a God and there is a first being, that's obvious. Now we go further. That first being, you should know, is much more than you think. And that, שכל doesn't tell you. That you have to believe because we were told by Him. ס'איז פארשטאנדיק, וויבאלד אז שכל האט אויך עליות פון דרגה צו דרגה, since in שכל you have levels, everyone's שכל can more, deeper, deeper, wie שטייט, ימים ידברו ורוב שנים יודיעו חכמה, says time tells the age, as years pass, it gives you more חכמה, because there are דרגות, levels. The higher you the more you understand, the אמונה becomes higher. The אמונה is always the next level after you understand. If I understand this level, then the higher level is אמונה. Then what happens now? I My שכל becomes stronger, so now I even understand the higher level. Now the level on top of that becomes the אמונה. So your אמונה grows because of your שכל grows. די ענינים וועלכע ער האט פריער געדארפט אמונה, things which you needed אמונה before, זענען שוין ביי אים אראפגעקומען אין השגה, now you understand it. Now your אמונה is on a higher level of אלוקות.

How Commandments Relate to Growing Understanding

Because the question was, if we're talking about חוקים, and חוקים is things that you do just because השם said, so what does תלכו mean, you should walk? There's no דרגות. It says: No, there is דרגות. ס'איז שייך וואס זיין השגה אין מצוות ווערט העכער, the more you understand in the מצוות that you're able to understand, אלס העכער ווערט ביי אים די חוקים. So the חוקים which are the level of not understanding get greater. What before was called חוקים, now is not חוקים anymore, ווייל דאס איז שוין אראפגעקומען אין השגת השכל, that he understands. Are there certain things we're never going to understand? Right, I mean, kashrut for instance. I mean, we can make up all the reasons... He says פרה אדומה is the most greatest חוקה which makes no sense. שלמה המלך said: I understand all the חוקים, one חוקה I can't understand, and that's פרה. משה רבינו, דער אייבערשטער said to him: To you, I'm revealing the טעם of the פרה אדומה. That's all-inclusive, isn't it? So what happened? Huh? That's all-inclusive... No, this Okay, I don't know about that. But this is what the Rebbe says. So it comes out, according to this, that משה רבינו didn't have חוקים. So he was missing this concept of אמונה, of חוקים? So he says: No. When the אייבערשטער told him the reason of the פרה אדומה, איז פון דעמאלטס ביי משה רבינו פרה אדומה שוין מער נישט געווען קיין חוקה. So it was not a חוקה anymore. מ'קען דאך אבער נישט זאגן אז ביי משה רבינו איז געפעלט געווארן דער ענין פון חוקים, you can't say he was missing חוקים, אבער ביי אים איז געווען דער ענין פון חוקים אין העכערע דרגות, so it was even higher מדרגה. Did he understand everything? No, he understood everything. till then. A higher מדרגה? Even in פרה אדומה גופא. Or no, I'm saying maybe Now he

Rabbi Mendel’s Story on Unreachable Depths

got, like the famous ווארט with ר' מענדל האראדאקער. What's this one? After the מגיד passed away, the אלטער רבי traveled to ר' מענדל האראדאקער. He was once there שמחת תורה, and he was supposed to go out for אתה הראת. They're waiting and waiting and waiting, it comes out he doesn't come out. What? So the אלטער רבי knocked on the door and went in and says, \"רבי, what's the problem?\" So he says, \"I'm looking into the פסוקים of אתה הראת, and I see a hundred interpretations, levels of these פסוקים, and I see I can't reach them. How could I go out say it and I can't reach these levels?\" The אלטער רבי said, \"That's not a reason not to come out, because what's going to happen if you do reach those levels? You'll see that there's another hundred after that that you can't reach. There's always more, so what's the purpose in waiting?\" The same thing here also, משה רבינו, everything higher. Now you understand the whole פסוק. You should go in the חוקים. And רש\"י says it means learn תורה, toil in תורה. דארף האלטן אין איין הארעווען אין תורה, you have to toil in תורה. דאס וואס ער האט נעכטן געהארעוועט ביז מסירת נפש, yesterday you learned so hard, איז היינט גארנישט, now today it's not enough. היינט דארף מען ווערן א העכערע השגה, you have to learn more. ממילא העכערע חוקים, more חוקים. בחוקותי תלכו, there's מהלך in חוקים, you have to go. What was yesterday, not only the things that you understand, the things which are limited, obviously there's more and more and more. You went with קבלת עול, you just, the אייבערשטער says, even that גופא, you can go higher. That's a compass he went back to then, because obviously, he had to come out, but he couldn't stop learning. I mean, he wouldn't stop learning anyway. Yeah. The שכר for that means, what is the reward? ונתתי גשמיכם בעתם, I'll give you rain in its time, and this ואולך אתכם קוממיות, the end is I'll make you go קוממיות means upright, ודאס גייט אויף די גאולה העתידה, it refers to the time of משיח, וואס דעמאלטס וועט זיין די הליכה בלי גבול, then you really go from limit, from level to level unlimited, ילכו מחיל אל חיל, וועט זיין דער גילוי וואס איז העכער פון הליכה, we go into higher and going ליום שכולו שבת ומנוחה לחיי העולמים, and go to ליום שכולו שבת. Yeah, but it seems like he understood all the levels of everything and פרה אדומה. Whatever level he understood, there was more. Here, it's more balanced. I guess. עשית שקר ולא הבין. אבער דער אויבערשטער איז מסביר? Ja. Quick question. Yes. This evening this is on that subject, just a week ago on Amazon.com, a couple of Torah English like Books. Torah books. 3-5 days. Good. You're able to learn and grow. I'm listening to you and it's Astounding, that's what we're talking about. Exactly. But you said something you shouldn't try to learn the Torah because it's interesting. No, it shouldn't be only because it's interesting. Some people learn it because they enjoy it. So to

Learning Torah for Joy and Divine Purpose

them, learning תורה and learning להבדיל science, is both this is interesting, this is interesting. One likes this, one likes this. It's different. תורה is God's words. It's God's words, it's God's wisdom, and therefore you shouldn't learn it just because I enjoy it. You should learn it because God wants me to learn it, and you should enjoy it because God wants me to enjoy it. So should you should you you're better off learning things that you doctor don't enjoy? No. Learn things that you enjoy, but make sure to toil on yourself, but you should enjoy it just because the אייבערשטער said so. But see, it's easier to do if you learn things that are not much fun for you. Yeah, but then you're not going to be able to really understand it. That's fine. Yeah, well Well, we all start with the dummies, then we go a little higher, hopefully. Yeah, Torah for Dummies, there's a book. But you certainly, certainly if you start learning because you just enjoy it, within that, underneath it is that fundamental idea that you're doing it because of השם, so that's What does that mean, toil? Means learn very hard. Learn if you understand it, go deeper. If you have one commentary, try to go to second commentary, and try to understand the same thing deeper and deeper. That's called hard work. Good night.
